Heesen 180 foot Moskito was delivered to its owner for a shakedown cruise to Malta

Heesen ’s muscular, new 180-footer, formerly known as Project Pollux, has been delivered to its owner as Moskito . The latest Heesen has what designer Omega Architects calls a “shark-tooth” superstructure with vertical windows and a dramatic overhang above the second deck. After delivery, Moskito will make its first cruise to Malta, a 2,800-nautical mile journey that will pass 81 waypoints.

The shakedown cruise will also prove the efficiency of its fast displacement hull form which, paired with twin MTU 8V 4000 M63 engines, sips only 40 gallons of diesel per hour at 11 knots. That’s exceptional fuel economy for a yacht this size. Top speed is 15.5 knots. At 13 knots, the boat has a range of 4,500 nautical miles.

Moskito has a large foredeck for the tender and crane, along with a lounge, while the main socializing happens on the flybridge, with its hardtop and Jacuzzi. The rear decks below allow for alfresco dining and access to the water.

Moskito’s main salon and dining area, according to its interior designer, “work equally well whether you’re in shorts and T-shirt or dressed for dinner.”  Courtesy Tom Van Oossanen

Bannenberg & Rowell created the interior, a design that managing director Dickie Bannenberg says “works equally well whether you’re in shorts and a T-shirt or dressed for dinner.” The studio used contrasts to enhance the look, combining dark eucalyptus and pale sycamore joinery, with chevron parquet flooring. Floor-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks give Moskito main salon and staterooms.

The owner also wanted the London studio to drill deep into the details by having them select the artwork—and even the books—so the yacht was delivered as a complete package. “We don’t always get to remain design control freaks like this,” quipped Bannenberg.

Moskito has a six-stateroom layout, including a master suite for the owner, and five staterooms for 10 guests. The 13 crew are housed in seven cabins.

First look: Heesen superyacht Moskito makes Monaco Yacht Show debut

The 55 metre Heesen superyacht Moskito has made its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show following delivery in spring.

Previously known as Project Pollux , the 55 metre Steel FDHF yacht first hit the water at the yard's Oss-based facility in August 2020 and was sold in October.

Moskito's exterior design penned by Frank Laupman’s Omega Architects is characterised by "shark-tooth" superstructure overhangs and vertical windows.

The 760GT interior meanwhile is from Bannenberg & Rowell , who acted to a brief calling for "style that combines bold solutions with a casual appeal".

Speaking about the design, studio co-founder Dickie Bannenberg said: "We've really enjoyed the journey from conception to completion on Moskito , greatly helped by the new owner not only going with every aspect of our original design for Heesen but also asking us to select artwork and books."

Materials used in the interior include the likes of dark eucalyptus and pale sycamore joinery. Other details include chevron parquet flooring in the main saloon, alongside "geometric shapes, natural tones and tactile finishes" throughout.

The carefully considered layout of Moskito sees the toys and tenders stored on the foredeck while the beach club and wellness area sit aft close to the water. Interior social areas are found on the main and bridge deck, while the 100 square metre sun deck provides al fresco relaxation.

Accommodation is for a total of 12 guests, with the 82 square metre owner’s apartment located on the main deck. Decorated in a palette of “taupes, browns and creams”, the master suite includes a his and hers bathroom with a shower and bath tub.

The rest of the guest accommodation sits across the bridge and lower decks, with two twins and two doubles on the lower deck and a fifth VIP cabin on the bridge deck.

Power comes from two MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel engines for a top speed of 15.5 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Moskito is the second superyacht delivered by Heesen this year so far along with the 50 metre Arkadia (formerly Project Triton). She is available to charter with IYC with charters starting from €350,000 per week.

Heesen’s On Spec ‘Moskito’

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • March 8, 2022

Heesen Yachts Moskito

When you’re buying a yacht, and if you’re considering a spec project, a number of factors work in your favor. You get a proven engineering package, where sisterships back up claims of cruising speeds that make quick work of island-hopping, or economical speeds that make transatlantic crossings possible. You get a shorter delivery time than with a custom build. And you have the opportunity to put your own stamp on the interior design, even when the yacht is already many months into the construction process.

Every spec yacht on the water today bears all of these advantages. Each also bears some changes made between the time the owners bought the yachts and the time they took deliveries.

Except for the 180-foot Heesen Moskito .

Yes, the owner relied on performance data verified by similar deliveries. Heesen Yachts had already handed over four previous projects in its 55-meter Steel series. The yacht’s fast-displacement hull form from Van Oossanen Naval Architects and twin MTU engines promised a 15.5-knot maximum speed and a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots. The owner also enjoyed a shorter delivery time. He acquired the yacht in late 2020 and took delivery in April 2021.

Heesen Yachts Moskito

What makes Moskito an exception is that the owner didn’t change a thing about the superyacht. Not any of the systems, not any of the wall paneling, other materials, or even furnishings that Bannenberg & Rowell Design chose to give the yacht a distinctive touch—nothing.

“We wanted to take the breath away, without being aesthetically intimidating,” says Dickie Bannenberg, who runs the design studio with Simon Rowell. The interplay of design elements not commonly found on spec builds “instantly differentiates and enhances the feeling that, for a spec boat, this is really something with a lot of detail and quality and thought and expense.”

Treating a spec project this way can be risky, of course, but Heesen and the design firm had already created nearly a dozen spec yachts together.

Heesen Yachts Moskito

“They do give us very free rein,” Bannenberg says. “They’ve never said, ‘We want you to do something based around X, Y or Z.’ We call the shots creatively. … We are trying to be progressive and interesting and original but, at the same time, target audiences as wide as possible.”

The shipyard strives for its spec yachts to be progressive in configuration too. After every two yachts in a series, Heesen incorporates changes based on the feedback of owners, captains and charter guests. So, even though Moskito is the fifth launch in the 55-meter Steel series, only its immediate predecessor, Solemates—whose owner changed the Bannenberg & Rowell interior—has staterooms spread across three decks. The VIP stateroom is on the wheelhouse deck instead of belowdecks and is enlarged to span the yacht’s full beam. Four guest staterooms remain belowdecks, and the master stateroom—926 square feet—occupies the main deck forward.

Additionally, Moskito is the second in the series to have a volume of 760 gross tons, an increase of 20 gross tons.

Heesen Yachts Moskito

“In terms of creating an identity, each one is completely a one-off,” Bannenberg says of the studio’s approach to spec yachts. Aboard Moskito , there are contrasting rich eucalyptus and pale sycamore wood, for instance, with smoked-oak parquet soles in a chevron pattern.

“It really does hit that sweet spot of people looking for something fairly easygoing, by which I mean you can sit there not perched on the front of the sofa,” Bannenberg says. “You’re pretty happy kicking back with polo shirts and shorts, but at the same time, if you want to live a smarter or more dressy life, it’s good for that too.”

Moskito also has more than a few gentle curves amid its walls. Take the master stateroom, for instance. Though guests pass through a foyer to get to the sleeping area, it’s not until they really look at the wall behind the bed and then at the wall in the foyer that they realize they’re arcs. For shipyards building on spec, it’s much easier and less expensive to manufacture straight lines. Heesen has its own interiors department, allowing for this kind of design element.

Heesen Yachts Moskito

Not only did the owner buy Moskito without changing a thing, but he also bought the superyacht sight unseen. He saw the yacht for the first time when boarding it in Malta upon delivery, having signed off on everything remotely. This included giving Bannenberg & Rowell carte blanche to select books and a few accessories to round out the overall design.

“We’ve had projects where people have said, ‘Select some art,’ or ‘Make some proposals,’ and we’ve put things together, and it doesn’t hit the spot,” Bannenberg says. “So it can cut both ways. In this particular case, I think we really did choose things to complement the overall vibe on board.”

It’s good to see that an exception can be exceptional.

Heesen’s Home

While several superyacht shipyards are in the Netherlands, Heesen’s home city of Oss sits 93 miles inland, closer to the land border with Germany than to the North Sea. A series of canals and rivers connects it to the sea.

Fantasy vs. Friendly

With spec projects, Bannenberg & Rowell Design envisions real-world scenarios. “We do like to think of the lifestyle—the family with two or three kids, or charters—and have things made practical,” Dickie Bannenberg says. “It’s not just a sort of homage to sharp design; it’s something very livable and comfortable.”

Here Comes the Sun

Alfresco areas are among the most popular places to be on board a yacht. Moskito’s outdoor spaces add up to nearly 2,700 square feet. Much of this is on the sun deck, which has a pool, a bar, and seating and sunbathing areas that are usable underway or at anchor.

The Hull Story

According to Van Oossanen, its fast-displacement hull form “reduces resistance values by 20 percent” when compared to “hard-chine hulls at semidisplacement speeds.”

HEESEN MOSKITO: CREATING A BUZZ

yacht moskito owner

Heesen’s 55-metre Moskito made her debut at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, topping an excellent year for the Dutch shipyard.

yacht moskito owner

In the last 18 months, Heesen has sold nine yachts (Amare II, Arkadia, Aquamarine, Oslo24, Sapphire, Gemini, Aura, ELA and Moskito) and delivered six (Amare II, Solemates, 2021 ELA, Aquamarine, Arkadia and Moskito). All were delivered on time (an obsession of the shipyard) and this very obsession has led the Dutch shipyard to come out of the pandemic stronger than ever.

MONACO DEBUT

September saw the crème de la crème of the superyacht world head to the Cote de Azure for the much anticipated Monaco Yacht Show. Moskito, Heesen’s latest delivery represented the shipyard, creating a stir with her exterior courtesy of Omega Architects and an interior designed by renowned British studio Bannenberg & Rowell.

Frank Laupman of Omega Architects has contributed to many of Heesen’s projects over the years creating vastly different designs from the elegant (MySky) to the aggressive (Amore Mio). Moskito falls somewhere in between the two, with powerful exteriors lines lending an air of calm authority, characterised by striking ‘shark-tooth’ superstructure overhangs and vertical windows.

yacht moskito owner

Heesen is one of the few shipyards that can build on spec – offering clients the opportunity to acquire yachts that are already under construction.

Moskito’s hull isn’t just sublime, it’s also hugely efficient thanks to the latest iteration of Van Oossanen’s ultra-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form. This low resistance, hydrodynamic efficient design allows Moskito to traverse 4,500 Nautical miles while cruising at 13 knots and with a pair of IMO III-compliant MTU 8V 4000 M63s powering her, she sips approximately 150 litres of diesel per hour at 11 knots.

INTERIOR SPACE

The abundance of tinted glazing is one of Moskito’s most eye catching design traits and it’s this extensive use of glass throughout that provides an abundance of natural light in the superyacht’s interior. Floor-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks illuminate Moskito’s decks highlighting the bold, sophisticated look created by British design duo Bannenberg & Rowell. “We wanted to take the breath away, without being aesthetically intimidating,” said Bannenberg. “That fine line between approachability and comfort. Something cool and interesting, but subtle.”

Cool, interesting and subtle it is, with a blend of natural, noble tones and a tailored spatial arrangement creating warm and inviting living areas. Traditionally crafted smoked Oak chevron parquet flooring, white Thassos, grey St. Laurent and ivory Travertine marble are used throughout, with warm bronze accent that underwrite fine workmanship and furnishings.

OWNER’S SUITE

Spanning more than eighty-two square metres, Moskito’s main deck Owner’s apartment is warm and airy, featuring a light and dark colourway dominated by oak parquet and eucalyptus veneers. A desk commissioned from GMS joinery in London (they have managed projects for the Houses of Parliament and Harrods) is just one of the bespoke items of furniture to be found on board, but there’s not one bit of ostentation – a typical trait of Heesen, as they have the confidence and ability to build yachts on speculation. Moskito’s Artworks have been sourced from British talents – from flowing porcelain forms by Fenella Elms, to Rose Vickers’ marquetry mosaics, and intricate paper collages by Hormazd Narielwalla.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Dining, entertaining and simply lazing around in the sun is all part of Moskito’s DNA. In fact, there are over two hundred and fifty square metres of outdoor entertaining spaces on board, including a sizeable sundeck complete with a pool, bar, seating and sunbathing areas. Linked to the deck saloon by simple sliding doors, Moskito’s aft terrace provides forty-four square metres of alfresco comfort.

High up on the bridge deck, the secluded skylounge is ideal for periods of calm and relaxation. “Our guiding philosophy was that the owner should be as happy hosting a black-tie dinner as lounging in their shorts,” says Bannenberg.

Of course, there’s no better place to lounge in shorts than in Moskito’s extensive beach club. This area is dedicated to wellness and features a sauna, plenty of seating, a shower and ample privacy for that early morning swim.

Arthur Brouwer, CEO of Heesen summed up Moskito’s popularity at the Monaco Yacht Show: “The 55m is a very popular class and we are the only Northern European shipyard to offer such a yacht on spec. We are proud to be presenting such a fine example of Heesen’s DNA. Moskito is sporty, sleek, and timelessly elegant in design, while offering the best in performance and efficiency. She has the right balance of indoor and outdoor space – meaning ultimate interior comfort and luxury, with spacious alfresco spaces to enjoy the best of yachting lifestyle.”

Moskito will be available for charter by selected guests via International Yacht Collection, in the Mediterranean in summer and in the Caribbean in winter.

Bannenberg & Rowell had ample interior volume to work with, coming in at 760 GT, and the understated elegance is ideal for celebrating in style or relaxing together with family and friends: The main salon has a contrast of dark eucalyptus and pale sycamore joinery and chevron parquet flooring that makes the bar even more eye-catching. Floor-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks grant guests magnificent views of the environment whilst relaxing within the climate-controlled interior.

The accommodation, meanwhile, provides up to 12 guests with six en-suite cabins to act as a private retreat: 1 Master suite, 2 VIP staterooms, 1 double cabin and 2 twin cabins that can convert to doubles.

Outside, there is a sundeck Jacuzzi and plenty of sunbathing options, while guests who want to chat and admire the view can do so in complete comfort while the Captain and crew of 12 see to every detail. A beach club in the lower deck stern is a wonderful place to greet visitors and welcome them on board or watch the rest of the group playing on the water toys from this Approved RYA Water Sports Centre.

OWNING A SUPERYACHT

24 september 2021.

In this MYS Special of YachtTalk, broadcast from the Heesen yacht Moskito, we are taking a closer look at the buying and owner experience of a superyacht. First question to answer of course: would you prefer to own a yacht or to charter? And if you’re buying, how do you realise the yacht of your dreams? As  Ben Geary  of Döhle Superyacht, which manages Moskito, confirms, management companies greatly contribute to the owner’s experience. Together with  Stewart Campbell , editor-in-chief at Boat International, we will talk about market trends and the dos and don’ts for future yacht owners.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
