West Vancouver Yacht Club Celebrates 75 Years

By patrick matishak.

west vancouver yacht club

While yacht clubs are founded on all things boating, and generally “messing about in boats,” it is the people who make them truly special. In 1945, when six like-minded boaters came together to sign the charter forming the West Vancouver Yacht Club , they did not foresee a 75th Anniversary celebration in the club’s future.

In the preliminary years, the club established a few temporary moorage locations. At best, 12 mooring buoys were located in Pilot Cove. A permanent home base for the club appeared unattainable. Late in 1950, during usual chitchat amongst members moored at a weekend gathering, a significant plan was hatched: a small group of members would form a syndicate and create a permanent mooring facility. In quick succession, discussions took place that lead to a group of 18 members who purchased property at their desired location, West Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove. They dredged, piled and supplied floats, which were turned over to West Vancouver Yacht Club’s ownership, management and operation. In return, the syndicate members were offered reduced moorage fees and membership dues.

When the syndicate purchased the first lot in Fisherman’s Cove, a small white cabin on the property became the Clubhouse. Over the course of a few years, additional adjacent properties were acquired, assembling the land and water lots the club enjoys today. A new clubhouse was built in 1963. A Yachting Centre was added in 2002, to serve as the headquarters for the expanding, very active, youth sailing program. To date, the clubhouse has undergone several renovations, with the most recent and significant enhancement completed in 2012. The dock configuration was redesigned in 2013. Subsequently, a redevelopment project eliminated some smaller moorage, accommodating larger and beamier vessels. This redevelopment further supported the club’s environmental stewardship efforts, earning the Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine BC Five-Anchor Eco-Rating certification.

Over the years, the club developed outstations at Kendrick Island in the Gulf Islands, and Elliot Bay in Howe Sound. Outstations in Telegraph Harbour and Pender Harbour are also very popular cruising destinations for members.

Two annual club signature events are the Southern Straits Yacht Race and the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta. Inaugurated in 1969, the Easter weekend Southern Straits attracts racers from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Crews come to compete, make new acquaintances, rekindle old ones and share in the camaraderie of sailboat racing. Celebrating 21 years, Pumpkin Bowl is a junior/intermediate event with a Halloween theme. The regatta has become the premier local dinghy racing event for young sailors, attracting over 200 competitors annually. These events, in addition to a number of races and regattas, including the summer Wednesday Evening Race Series, and the winter Snowflake Races, make for an active and engaged sailing fleet.

Cruisers are not left out of the fun. Frequent cruises and gatherings up and down our beautiful coast have been chronicled over the years in the Foghorn, a monthly WVYC publication.

The West Vancouver Yacht Club has always been a progressive, family friendly club, with active and engaged members cruising, racing, socializing, volunteering and supporting each other. Our success is attributed to retaining these values as times and circumstances have transitioned through 75 years. Looking ahead, we see a bright future, in continuing to build an active and engaged membership of all ages, who share a passion for “messing about in boats”.

  • After Two-Year Hiatus, Southern Straits is Back!

The 52 nd Southern Straits Classic hosted by West Vancouver Yacht Club is set for April 15 – 17, 2022 after taking two years off due to Covid-19.

They don’t call it a classic for nothin’! For sailboat racers around the Salish Sea, the year’s first major opportunity to stretch your sea legs on a significant distance race is Southern Straits. It’s famously fun, occasionally very sporty, often quite chilly… and totally worth the effort. Anyone who has hunkered down on the rail for a night on the strait and experienced the triumph of crossing the often-tricky finish line knows that it is one of the more rewarding experiences in boat racing.

Note for U.S. sailors planning to attend: keep up to date on Canada’s entry requirements for travelers as the date approaches — vaccination is currently required.

The racing community has dearly missed this big race in 2020 and 2021, and many are eager to come out for “Straits” this year. It’s back, and hopefully you can come test your mettle and skills, and have some fun on the glorious waters of the Georgia Strait.

Here’s all the info from race organizers:

The West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) is excited to welcome back the Southern Straits Regatta after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 52 nd running of the Easter weekend race will see sailors crisscrossing Georgia Strait testing their strategy, skill, and endurance while racing overnight in early season conditions.

The Short, Medium, and Long courses range from 70 – 133 nautical miles. In addition, there is an Inshore Course (approximately 20 nautical miles) that will be conducted during daylight hours on Good Friday.

Race registration is now open and closes on Sunday, April 10 th . An early bird discount is available until February 28 th .

The WVYC will also be offering a one-day Coastal Personal Survival Course on April 3 rd for those who need to renew or take a Safety at Sea course. Registration details are online at Coastal Personal Survival Course .

WVYC is inviting all racers to participate in this challenging yachting tradition.   The races will take place over the weekend of April 15-17, 2022. Starting sequences will begin at 10:25 a.m. on Friday, April 15.

WVYC welcomes everyone to come down to Dundarave Pier in West Vancouver to see the parade of boats line up between nine and 10 a.m. and cheer on the competitors before the race begins.

Business name : West Vancouver Yacht Club

A yacht club is formed by a group of people with a common interest in using boats to get away from land and enjoy cruising local and distant waters, racing for the thrill of personal combat against other sailors and the elements, or just messing about on boats. In the children’s classic “The Wind in the Willows”, it is described thus: “There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats…or with boats…in or out of ’em, it doesn’t matter.”

West Vancouver Yacht Club has just such beginnings and aspirations. Formed in 1945, the Club consisted of 45 people with only 6 boats between the lot of them. In 1946 the first Sailpast was held, and Club members and friends have been enjoying this annual event that starts the boating season every year since.

Humble beginnings, started by the dreams of a few, moved on to acquire the foreshore rights in Fisherman’s Cove in 1951 with a small cottage for a clubhouse. By 1963 the clubhouse you see overlooking the moorage was completed and then extensively updated in 2012. Much of the work carried out on Club projects is through members’ volunteering labour and expertise; volunteering is a mainstay of Club participation and camaraderie.

Many accomplishments over the years have contributed immensely to the enjoyment all the members have for “messing about in boats”. The annual Southern Straits Yacht Race brings sailors and boats to the Straits of Georgia to challenge each other in the boisterous spring weather conditions. Outstations have been added at Gambier Island and Kendrick Island and more recently with leased space in Pender Harbour and Telegraph Harbour. The Club sail training program, designed to help youngsters and adults become proficient in the skills of sailing, is now one of the premier such programs available to anyone in the community, not just Club members. To serve this program, the Sailing Center was built in 2002 as a focus for activity and learning in all aspects of small boat sailing.

Southern Straits Race - WEB

A North Shore sporting tradition with a half-century history will be back on course this month after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.

The West Vancouver Yacht Club will host the 52 nd Southern Straits Sailing Race over the Easter weekend, with sailors once again hitting open water to navigate a course criss-crossing the Georgia Strait. The event will also include the return of popular on-shore activities for members of the public, including a pancake breakfast benefiting the Lions Society, live music from the West Vancouver Pops Band, live commentary, and a visit from the Easter Bunny to coincide with the start of the race at West Vancouver’s Dundarave Pier at 25th Street and Bellevue Avenue on Good Friday, April 15.

The event will feature short, medium and long course races ranging in length from 70 to 145 nautical miles, as sailors will test their skill while racing overnight in tricky spring conditions. There will also be an Inshore Course of approximately 20 miles, which will run during daylight hours on Good Friday.

The Royal Canadian Navy will be in attendance at this year’s event, with a Patrol Craft Training Cougar 61 Orca-class vessel on hand to start the race.

Public festivities will begin at 9 a.m., April 15, with the race’s starting sequence commencing at 10:25 a.m.

More info about the race, as well as a live yacht tracking tool, is available on the Southern Straits Sailing Race event webpage .

How Southampton corrected their course to win promotion to the Premier League

LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 26: Jack Stephens of Southampton lifts the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final Trophy after his team's victory, after Southampton secure promotion to the Premier League after defeating Leeds United during the Sky Bet Championship Play Final match between Leeds United and Southampton at Wembley Stadium on May 26, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty Images)

Editor’s note: This article was updated following Southampton’s victory in the Championship play-off against Leeds United.

Three days on from the final game of the Championship regular season against Leeds United , Southampton ’s hierarchy arranged a boat trip after training.

Spirits were high as players trained at St Mary’s Stadium on May 7. A 2-1 victory at Elland Road had halted a three-match losing streak and the team were heading into the promotion play-offs — the first leg of their semi-final was to be away to West Bromwich Albion — with rediscovered momentum.

Once the session was completed, the squad travelled to the nearby English south coast, where a Sunseeker yacht was waiting for them. Southampton’s ownership group, including Sport Republic co-founder Rasmus Ankersen, lead investor Dragan Solak and other key executives, also made the trip.

Southampton took the yacht across to the Isle of Wight and had lunch at a beachfront restaurant, The Hut. Solak, who one person joked “should have just bought a yacht” instead of the club when relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last season , spoke at the lunch, telling players they would be able to have the party of their lives provided they won promotion via the play-offs.

Southampton have done just that, beating Leeds 1-0 at Wembley thanks to Adam Armstrong ’s first-half strike to secure the type of celebration Solak promised.

According to Deloitte Sports Business Group, Southampton will receive a revenue uplift of at least £140million ($178m) across the next three years as a result of their promotion to the Premier League .

How much is the Championship play-off final worth?

It is the third triumph for Southampton manager Russell Martin over Leeds and opposite number Daniel Farke — whom he played under for Norwich City — this season. One was that final-day fixture three weeks ago, and the other came against the backdrop of four successive losses for Southampton last September, with recently-appointed Martin under growing pressure from supporters. Then came Wembley.

west vancouver yacht club

While the then director of football Jason Wilcox and Sport Republic shared profound faith in Martin, believing he was among football’s best young coaches and would prove himself at the highest level, that 3-1 win against Leeds eased growing scrutiny.

Martin’s first year with Southampton has delivered a cultural shift and an overhaul in playing identity; more personable off the field, more possessional on it. It can, however, be bookended by form deserting his side at the start and at the end of the season, which snuffed out hopes of automatic promotion. In between those dips, Southampton went on a run of 25 league games unbeaten, bringing a winning streak and mindset back to St Mary’s.

This season, Southampton have scored 22 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, more than any other Championship side. Internally, it is being attributed to the depth of spirit Martin has fostered as well as improved coordinated training, where players under his ‘Train how we play’ mantra can maintain a better structure for longer within 90 minutes.

Ryan Fraser ’s last-minute winning goals away to Hull City and Millwall and Flynn Downes ’ at home to Watford gave credence to the internal notion that the longer a game goes on, the more the odds fall in Southampton’s favour due to Martin’s possession-based, suffocating passing style. His identity makes the opposing team run, stretching the space between units, with fatigue increasingly becoming a factor.

west vancouver yacht club

Martin has been described as a “what you see is what you get” character by those close to him. He is relatable for young players, having retired five years before. He is only 38 years old now.

Arguably his greatest challenge was to win the trust of the dressing room and its senior figures. Upon his arrival, Martin walked into a fractured club devastated by post-relegation redundancies , with unhappy personnel also leaving and several players who appeared despondent and suffering from a confidence crisis.

Incoming staff, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, say they entered an environment that was cold and suffering a lack of communication across each branch of the club. Martin inherited 31 outfield players with three goalkeepers and has since expressed publicly that most of them wanted to leave.

Martin likes to have in-depth conversations with players individually in his office, hoping they feel comfortable opening up. He held several one-on-ones with players who had been in a psychologically difficult place after relegation and wanted to leave for a fresh start.

Some said their chief desire was to simply start enjoying football again. That level of honesty struck a chord with Martin, appreciative they felt able to express those emotions. Gradually, others, who were initially more guarded, followed a similar path.

The day after one defeat, Martin spoke to players and staff. Rather than dissect the game forensically at that stage, he shared his more empathetic side. He presented a list of all his own fears in everyday life and why they cause anxiety and doubt. It served as a part of Martin’s wider picture approach, putting football into perspective.

Given he has a big interest in politics, veganism and Buddhism, Martin is a man with a core set of beliefs that he channels into his day-to-day existence.

The Russell Martin playbook: Touches, touches and more touches

Changing the mood around St Mary’s was another task that would require patience.

Players were acutely aware of supporters’ negativity — not just related to last season but across several years, with playing at home becoming a subdued, groaning and, at times, apathetic experience.

With piecemeal progress, Martin and the players have worked hard to transform the atmosphere to the point where that strength of feeling crescendoed in the play-off semi-final second leg, with St Mary’s at its loudest in recent memory. The team received a raucous welcome as their coach arrived pre-match, with flares, flags and songs.

Players were taken aback by the level of support, with some excitedly filming the scenes from inside the coach. West Brom’s preparations were then disturbed as they were held up for 15 minutes, waiting for the roads to clear outside the stadium.

To carry out Martin’s ball-dominant style, the squad need a high level of confidence in risk-taking, playing out of tight situations defensively and performing line-breaking passes.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu , before a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in April, was a case in point.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has regularly come under intense criticism, has struggled with his shot-stopping since joining in 2022, with underlying data showing he has underperformed his expected goals against (xGA) metric by 20 goals this season alone. It has contributed to Southampton conceding the 11th most goals of any Championship side, despite their overall xGA total being the fourth lowest.

Martin, though, has continued to defend Bazunu strongly. He has taken a broader look at his side being caught on transition and therefore presenting a higher number of quality chances to the opposition and this was viewed as more of a pressing issue.

Regardless, Bazunu’s distribution when playing out from the back is his greatest strength and is seen to discernibly improve ball progression. Martin’s side have registered the Championship’s joint-second highest expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes (1.73), compensating for the sporadically porous defending.

Rewiring the attacking structure has been illustrative of Martin’s coaching acumen, remedying the disappointment of losing Nathan Tella to Bayer Leverkusen last summer — coaching staff thought he would score 15-plus goals this season if he had remained at the club — by moving Kyle Walker-Peters into a right-wing role when Southampton had the ball and shifting Adam Armstrong, who has been directly involved in 36 goals, the most of any Championship player, into a quasi right-forward.

Armstrong, who scored the goal — his fourth in three games against Leeds this season — that sent Southampton back to the Premier League, has been an unquestionable success story under Martin, trained to make intelligent and incisive out-to-in runs, where he ends up receiving the ball in dangerous positions.

In January , having pushed for Hull’s Jaden Philogene months earlier , Martin was eventually delivered an archetypal right-winger in David Brooks from Bournemouth, joining on loan and with Southampton inheriting his high Premier League wages.

The delicacy of a Championship play-off final will naturally have consequences on summer plans.

Failure to secure promotion would have meant incurring further losses and financial cuts, owing to the necessity of adhering to profit and sustainability rules (PSR). Key players such as Walker-Peters would have been sold and those on loan who have been impressive and who want to stay — namely Downes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis — would have found it difficult to have permanent deals sanctioned.

west vancouver yacht club

PSR meant Solak could have not injected more cash even if he wanted to, leaving Martin to work with loans and smaller, more economical acquisitions. For example, it was made clear last summer that Southampton could not shop in the same market as fellow relegated side and promotion rivals Leicester City , who were able to sign former England internationals Conor Coady and Harry Winks among others.

There is a sense that Southampton will be in a better position now promotion is assured, whether it is next season or later down the line. Although the squad will be upgraded, Sport Republic has made acute efforts to ensure continuity, regardless of short-term failure. The school of thought insists staff will know Southampton’s aim is to establish themselves as a top-10 Premier League side and offer the best platform for young players.

But Martin has repeatedly had to contend with other challenges.

Losing Wilcox, who left for Manchester United in April, was a significant blow. The pair had a close relationship and the same footballing beliefs, with Wilcox the club’s biggest advocate for Martin’s appointment. It was hoped to be a long-term relationship but Wilcox departed less than a year into a project that aimed to change the club’s deeper culture. Wilcox is regarded as a professional and media-savvy operator who was popular with staff due to his clear ways of working.

Earlier this week, Southampton sold out their 35,000-seat allocation for Wembley, with the excitement around the city greater and more obvious than in over a decade, going back to when they last won promotion to the Premier League in 2012.

Going up was fundamental in Southampton’s immediate success and to Sport Republic’s multi-club model, which has put in over £300million during its two and a half years in ownership and is awaiting some form of return on its investment.

Yet the level of root and branch reform that has taken place — with Martin and his players the leading influences — has brought broader vindication and now, thanks to football’s richest one-off game, a much bigger reward.

Renée had posed on the red carpet solo before joining James and their other friends at the event, which also saw A-list starts including Heidi Klum and Bella Hadid attend.

The pair have reportedly enjoyed a string of low-key dinners together during their time in Cannes, while Renée is said to have joined James on his luxury yacht.

The lavish yacht has reportedly been moored off Antibes, France, for the past week after travelling over from Barcelona earlier this month for the esteemed film festival.

Renée, who previously used the last name Blythewood-Hall, has carved out a successful modelling career for herself since the age of 10, and often makes appearances at exclusive red carpet events.

Renée is a single mother to 16-year-old son Levi, who she reportedly welcomed during a past relationship with a photographer.

While she has never spoken publicly about her love life, Renée is thought to have briefly dated American TV presenter Ryan Seacrest back in 2015.

James was previously married to Erica Packer. They got married in 2007 and split in 2013, but continue to co-parent their children - Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle.

Erica reportedly received a $100million divorce payment, and purchased a family home in Los Angeles shortly after the break-up.

James also bought an $80million Los Angeles mansion so he can be closer to Erica and their children whenever he is in town.

Erica has since found love again with  Shannon Bennett  and they have reportedly bought a house together.

Shannon shares kids Phoenix, Hendrix, Xascha, Xanthe, Xahlia and Margaux with ex partner Madeleine West.

Before his relationship with Erica, James was married to Jodhi Meares and they have remained friends ever since their split.

They tied the knot  in a lavish ceremony in Sydney in 1999, where around 750 guests attended and Elton John performed.

However, they separated three years later in 2002 and divorced shortly after.
