BROKER'S COMMENTS

Almost a total rebuild and restoration and thoroughly modern systems make SWANILDA a very usable classic. Indeed, following her 2010-2012 reconstruction her design and condition now should allow ocean passages as well as summer cruises and classic races. A recent topsides repaint and mast and spars refinishing at Elephant Boatyard leaves this very English lady looking very smart. Given the treatment she has received, SWANILDA is undoubtedly very reasonably priced.

CAMPER & NICHOLSONS DESIGN No. A197 BERTHON BOAT COMPANY YARD No. 907 SWANILDA is from the board of Charles Arthur Nicholson whose designs favoured full bows & fine run; a shape with comfortable seagoing characteristics – and this yacht is no exception. Built by Berthon in 1960 for Horace Skeet Broom and named after the central character in the ballet Coppelia, she was built for racing. Indeed she raced in RORC and Royal Southern events with varying degrees of success until rating rule changes made her outdated and she went into retirement as a fast passage cruiser from 1965. In 1967 Broom sold her to Henry Williams who in 1969 shared her with Jonathan Trafford who both then sold her on to Arthur Wilson who kept her until 1986 when she was sold to Nigel Dean. She was sold again and substantially refitted. Rowan Yacht Services of Hoo undertook the work over three years; also fitting the Yanmar 57 hp engine and new tankage. Her first trip thereafter was to the 2004 Classic Boat Regatta and she was based in Cowes for some years thereafter. In recent ownership SWANILDA enjoyed another substantial refit at the Elephant boat yard in Bursledon – indeed a virtual rebuild with the original mahogany planking below the waterline replaced with iroko, and a completely new totally in keeping interior. In 2012 she crossed the Atlantic both ways.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

swanilda yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

swanilda yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

swanilda yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

swanilda yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

swanilda yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

swanilda yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

swanilda yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The Breakdown

A Ballet Heroine, Step by Step

Who is Swanilda, the lead of “Coppélia”? Our critic demonstrates how her ebullient, game-changing character is shown in her steps.

Alastair Macaulay

By Alastair Macaulay

Most heroines of 19th-century ballet are brilliantly active as dancers but dramatically passive. They dance and bloom while other people build up the story around them. Not so Swanilda in “Coppélia,” the three-act classic that returns to New York City Ballet repertory May 25 (through June 2).

She can see that her boyfriend, Franz, is flirting with the girl next door — but she, unlike him, has the good sense to be suspicious of that girl, Coppélia. Supposedly Coppélia, who never dances, is the daughter of the crazy scientist Dr. Coppélius — but isn’t she too good, too passive and too mechanical to be true? Leave it to Swanilda (here danced by the City Ballet principal Megan Fairchild) and her eight girlfriends to find out the truth!

“Coppélia,” though, is also a highly classical construction, and Swanilda’s ebullient, game-changing character (she turns the story around) is objectively shown in her music and her steps. The 1870 score — a marvel of melody, orchestration and brio — is by Léo Delibes; one of the passages in which it most marvelously marries lively characterization to formal perfection is the Slav theme and variations, in which Swanilda and her chums just dance. Nothing happens in terms of plot, but the steps tell you who they are.

And yet those steps — the choreography is widely attributed to Marius Petipa — are absolutely formal. Here we see that all nine young women keep reverting to fifth position, the crucial starting point in which one turned-out foot is placed in front of the other (one heel by the other toe, one toe by the other heel).

swanilda yacht

For them, that’s always a launching pad.

As the music’s first variation starts, Swanilda arrives (as if pouncing) into fifth position, lingers there as if teasing the suspense — and then steps smartly out onto one point, arriving in the position known in ballet as arabesque, stretching a gestural line from one forward arm through the leg extended behind her.

The brisk footwork that follows tells you about her speed and pluck. But that arabesque also shows you her poise: grace under pressure.

Around 1940, the choreographer George Balanchine told the critic Edwin Denby that all his ballets were based on this dance for Swanilda and her friends. Well, we can see why. “Coppélia” shows the same closed-open contrast that abounds in Balanchine ballets, notably in “Concerto Barocco” (1941):

But Swanilda is an enchantress in her own right, not just because she’s proto-Balanchine. She is, as Denby observed, like the heroine of a play by George Bernard Shaw, taking matters into her own hands.

In Act I, the theme-and-variations format lasts just over seven minutes, taking Swanilda through a marvelous range of moods. In this solo, she’s at her most extroverted, perky, spirited.

Here she lingers silkily before switching to sparkle.

Watching the details of her dance helps you to fall in love with ballet footwork: This shows her energy, precision and composure.

This passage, in which she executes the same step (enveloppé, or grand battement raccourci) again and again, demonstrates her poise, her fluency, her amplitude.

And it’s not just the music that plays variations on a theme; the steps do, too. In this next part she’s switching again from fifth position to arabesque on point, but twice as fast and as explosively as before.

And here she makes that fifth position a girl-power rallying call: Do what I do! Her friends shadow her step for step; and the music is shot through with laughter and high spirits.

What happens after this in “Coppélia”? In a year when New York has had several variations on the Pygmalion legend, “Coppélia” adds a feminist twist. As Swanilda and her friends find in Act II, Coppélia really is a doll — Dr. Coppélius has Pygmalion-type dreams of bringing her to life. So Swanilda, donning Coppélia’s clothes, fools him. Impersonating his doll daughter, she heartlessly fulfills his hopes: In her, he thinks he sees his artifact coming to life.

Next, laughingly, she shatters this house of cards twice over. She shows the lifeless Coppélia to both Coppélius and to Franz. So, Franz learns what a fool he’s been. Coppélia, the perfect woman he was pursuing, was a mechanical toy. Swanilda, whom he was double-timing, is made of flesh, blood and wit.

Reader, she gets what she wants: She marries him. Then, in her wedding pas de deux, she goes further, showing us one more variation on the stuff of which she’s made. She becomes a ballerina: grander, more mature and more multifaceted than before. But it’s the Act I theme and variations that show you her potential.

The standard devices of the traditional ballets can read as so many clichés. In multiple ballets, for example, those companions surround their heroes and heroines with dancing entourages: The heroine often has six or eight female companions known as “little friends.” But don’t knock them! Those companions take the heroine’s feminine spirit and fill the stage with it.

I’m tempted to say that if you don’t love “little friends,” you’re missing much of ballet’s spell. Watch Swanilda and her friends (and their footwork); listen to their music, and the art form’s infectious brio gets under your skin.

An earlier version of this article misstated the day that "Coppélia" performances begin at New York City Ballet. They begin on May 25, not May 26.

Robert Garland has held many positions at Dance Theater of Harlem over many years. At long last, he has caught the most prized title: artistic director .

Alexei Ratmansky, arguably the most important ballet choreographer today, has stepped into a new role at New York City Ballet  with a deeply personal first work  that reflected his Ukrainian roots.

6 of the best Nautor's Swan sailing yachts

Clubswan 50.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of  Nautor's Swan , we take a look back at some of the yard's most luxurious sailing yachts which are admired by hardcore racers and cruisers alike.

The range starts with the new ClubSwan 50, which exhibits many of the modern design trends seen in much larger Nautor's Swan sailing yachts. Built to a very specific brief, this model is a convertible sports cruiser that can easily be helmed without the need for any crew. Her elegant styling includes naval architecture developed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, the Argentinean designer who also penned Groupama 4 , the winner of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.

The Finnish builder has delivered more than 2,000 sailing yachts over the years but one of the best Swan yachts on the water today is also the first.

The Swan 36 Tarantella was the first yacht launched by Nautor's Swan in 1966 and she was recently refitted by the yard to make her majestic return to the water. Many of her original build team members – now retired – returned to Swan in order to take on the restoration of the beloved first yacht. She sails as magnificently today as she did nearly 50 years ago.

In June 2015, Nautor’s Swan  launched its first Swan 115 sailing yacht . The new Swan flagship was built for none other than Nautor's Swan chairman Leonardo Ferragamo. Following in a lineage of Ferragamo Swans named Solleone , the latest iteration builds upon the classic, understated and "unpretentious" luxury enjoyed by her owner.

Designed by German Frers , the first Swan 115 is ready for racing and comfortable for cruising, and her dark blue hull colour cuts a striking figure on the water. Hull No 2 was named Shamanna and launched in April 2016, while Hull No 3 Highland Fling splashed less than a month later. Hull No 4 in the new Swan 115 range has also been sold and features an even greater focus on high performance racing with a flush-deck design. These slight variation are sure to provide thrilling racing when all the new Swan flagships line up at a regatta in the near future.

When Swan debuted its new Swan 105RS Ti-Coyo in 2014 she proved a real showstopper thanks to her fantastic stern design. The master cabin is placed all the way aft and becomes an on-water suite when the transom folds down, creating a giant superyacht beach club . By sliding open the glass doors into the master stateroom the owners can enjoy sea views from the bed and a morning swim is just a few steps away.

The 31.69 metre Swan 105 was designed by  Beiderbeck Designs with naval architecture by German Frers.

The 27.71 metre Swan 90 has been a popular series for the builder. Notable Swan 90s include Freya and Nefertiti . The Swan 90s are proven performers on the racecourse. Nefertiti , for instance, took first place in both the 2013 and 2014 Swan Caribbean Challenge Trophy at the RORC Caribbean 600 regatta.

They are also able bluewater cruisers, extremely seaworthy in transatlantic crossings and comfortable for long-range cruising. Swan is now updating this model and building a new 28.87 metre Swan 95, which it revealed in September 2014. The first Swan 95 , designed by German Frers, is in build and is set to launch in 2016.

The Swan 80 maxi-cruiser is the ideal pocket sailing superyacht for the owner who wants to be able to race or cruise in style. Two cockpits allow guests to unwind and stay out of the way during racing action.

Another collaboration between Swan and German Frers, the new Swan 80 will have huge portholes in the owner's cabin down below, letting in plenty of light, and she offers multiple layout options to suit her owner. She also offers a few transom design options to personalise the yacht further and the galley is fitted out to a professional standard.

This Bonkers Swan-Shaped Megayacht Concept Has a Detachable Head That Turns Into a Day Boat

Avanguardia Megayacht

This bold new megayacht concept is sure to ruffle a few feathers. The 450-footer is shaped just like a swan and even comes with a detachable head that can be used as a separate boat.

The gigantic sized bird goes by the name of Avanguardia , which means “vanguard” in English. Fitting since the megayacht is clearly at the forefront of marine design. The concept was penned by plucky Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini of Lazzarini Design Studio . The Rome-based outfit has churned out a number of disruptive designs, from flying cars to a bullet-shaped hyperyacht , but this waterbird may make the biggest splash yet.

Avanguardia is replete with flowing lines and subtle curves that give her the elegant silhouette of a real-life swan. The gargantuan vessel is split into five separate decks and can fit up to 60 seafarers. Just like the animal, the “head” (a.k.a. the control tower) acts as a brain to maneuver the vessel. But it also doubles as a separate 50-foot cruiser that can carry out requisite day-time jaunts.

Avanguardia Megayacht

Lazzarini Design Studio

The control center is supported by a flexible “neck” that employs a fulcrum to give it a full range of movement. When swanning about, it drops to the middle of the megayacht to help steer it in the right direction. Conversely, when the vessel is at anchor, the neck lowers the head to the water where it detaches for independent cruising.

Toys come in the form of a helicopter on the top level, a pair of Lazzarini’s jet capsules that are located aft, and a haul of supercars which sit amidships, because why not? The jet capsules can also be added to the rear of the vessel for added propulsion.

swanilda yacht

Speaking of propulsion, the swan’s power would come in the form of twin electric side engines and a central MTU Rolls-Royce engine. Together, this setup could push the megayacht to a maximum cruising speed of about 18 knots.

While Avanguardia it just a concept at this stage, the design studio said that it could become a reality in the the future if a client is able to invest. Lido deck and the swan? We’d love to see that story hit the water.

Beautiful boat

Very impressed with the quality of this boat. The spec is top of the line and we'll maintained. The toilets are fresh & clean. The route on the river through Moscow takes in many of the iconic sites of Moscow and is a great introduction. The food was nice. Wide selection. Service was pleasant. Get the iPod with audio for some interesting commentary. I recommend the 2 1/2 hour trip.

Dear GrantHay, thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

We had it today. Nice views and a fun way to see the city. We also had some pasta and drinks, which were ok. Service was very nice. Shame we didn't know that the tour from Gorky Park is just half way - lasts about 1.5 hour. If we knew we would start at Ukraina hotel.

Dear Paweł S, thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. The standard return route from Gorky Park Pier to Hotel Ukraina Pier lasts two and a half hours with the pivot closer to the business center "Moscow-city" to the Kotelnicheskaya embankment without any stops. On weekends the departure time is at four p.m. and eight p.m. The boarding starts thirty minutes before the departure.

When I got on Radisson's cruise boats, I thought that it's a normal, boring river cruise, but 10 minutes later I found out I was totally wrong. What a beautiful view of the historical buildings of Moscow!!!! The statue that hung in the middle of Moskva River is amasing. Service is acceptable and waiters/waitresses are freindly and the food is in good quality.

Hello, dear Milad1987! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Come on our thematic cruises and food festivals, you will discover still a lot. And Royal-class – for anyone who knows how to relax, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday – live music. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

Went with business group on dinner cruise, with guide. Really enjoyed the views after dark - seeing Red Square/The Kremlin from this vantage was great. And being on the top deck to view with no obstructions was worth the cold wind ! Kind of hard to eat and see the views at the same time, but the food was nothing special so we focused on the views. Service fine but not notable. Guide might as well have been a pre-recorded piece as there was no attempt to engage us - and it was hard to tell what building or view she was referring to as she just sort of looked in the direction of the item and spoke with monotone voice. Go for the views, not the food or service.

Hello, dear lbes! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Unfortunately, due to the nature of the rolling stock, the menu is presented on the yacht, may not be as diverse and exquisite in the filing, copyright in stationary restaurants. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

Great boat ride - see all the sights. The food is way better than you expect on a riverboat. This is a great 3 hour ride through Moscow with too many sights and views to name individually - take your camera!

Hello, dear TimT1947! Thank you for your feedback about Flotilla Radisson Royal. It’s very important for us to know the opinion of each guest. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Ice class of yachts allows not stop navigation in winter: they move on the ice so smoothly and quietly that only the changing landscapes of Moscow historical centre can remind you that you are in the cruise. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

It would be great to arrive before departure time inorder to enjoy your dinner. And spend the rest of the trip enjoying the scenic views. Our waiter was a gentleman. He spoke broken English. But he made great effort to explain some of the important buildings as we passed by. He made sure that our little girl was treated like a princess. If we travel back to Moscow we will have a day trip and an evening trip. We selected the Royal class.
