Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea is a luxury experience for those who are looking for something different. Set in a stunning space with an amazing view of the Docklands, it’s perfect for people who want to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea with a twist. I mean, how often do you get to enjoy afternoon tea on a yacht?

Where is the Sunborn Yacht?

London Docklands, as with so much of the city, is steeped in history. In its prime, it was the part of the port of London, which at one time was the biggest port in the world. Over the years the ports of London scaled back massively and the area was neglected, becoming a not so desirable part of the city. Thankfully, a lot of money was invested and London Docklands has become a vibrant, modern and desirable place to spend time.

The Sunborn Yacht is permanently docked in what was formerly the Royal Victoria Docks. These days, it’s just a stone’s throw from the Excel exhibition centre, and surrounded by hotels, bars and residential areas.

From the restaurant where afternoon tea is served, the view looks out over the water, with flats in the distance and the city of London creates a dramatic skyline.

As you approach Sunborn Yacht, it’s hard not to have a wow moment. Claimed to be the only super yacht hotel experience available in the UK, it is eye-wateringly huge and not easy to miss as you approach.

On board, there are standard hotel rooms and luxurious suites, as well as a restaurant and bar. The restaurant hosts guests and general public for both dinner and afternoon tea, enjoyed with stunning views of London from the aptly named Land’s End Restaurant.

Sunborn Yacht also offers conference space, and if you’re really after the wow factor, you can even get married on the yacht!

Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea menu

As with most traditional afternoon teas, the Sunborn Yacht offers a three-tier dining experience. On the bottom layer, the sandwiches are lined up for easy viewing of the fillings. Middle layer follows traditional afternoon tea with the scones, and on the top layer are the desserts.

The sandwiches on offer are traditional British choices such as ham and mustard, coronation chicken, salmon and creme fraiche, beef and horseradish and egg mayo. Served with different types of bread, with one filling in a brioche roll, this is far from a standard sandwich plate.

Moving on to the scone layer, two raisin scones are on offer per person, accompanied by clotted cream and a small jar of fruit jam or preserve. Although the scones are modest in size, they’re delicious and the perfect size to be enjoyed alongside the rest of the afternoon tea.

Coming to the final dish of sweets, this is where the creativity of the chef usually comes through. For the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea, you’re treated to an Earl Grey panna cotta – keeping on trend with the afternoon tea – plus a chocolate delice, a mini jam tart and a delicious passionfruit cheesecake.

How to book Afternoon Tea on the Sunborn Yacht

You can book afternoon tea directly on the Sunborn Yacht website , or via a third party provider.

Can I buy a voucher?

The Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea is a unique idea for a gift, and vouchers are available for afternoon tea or afternoon tea with cocktails directly on the Sunborn Yacht website .

There are also vouchers on Wowcher for a discounted rate, though there are usually time limitations on these, for example only during the week.

Does the yacht move?

Nope! The yacht is permanently moored in the dock, and has virtually no movement or swaying despite being in the water.

Is there a dress code?

Afternoon tea is still considered a nice way to spend the afternoon and an event to dress up for. While there’s no formal dress code, you’ll likely feel a little out of place if you turn up in joggers and a hoody. It’s best to aim for smart-casual.

How to get to Sunborn Yacht

By car: Sunborn Yacht is permanently docked just next door to the Excel Exhibition Centre, so the car park there is conveniently located to use for access.

By public transport: If you’re arriving by tube, the nearest stations are Custom House (Elizabeth Line and DLR) or Canning Town (Jubilee Line).

By cable car: If you’re coming from/ going to Greenwich after, don’t miss the opportunity to catch the cable car!

Can you stay on board the Sunborn Yacht?

If you’re looking for a really luxurious experience, you can pair your afternoon tea with a stay on board the Sunborn Yacht Hotel . It’s a great location for exploring East London, but with accommodation as quirky and fancy as this, wouldn’t you want to stay on board and enjoy it?

My experience

My cousin recently got married and as a belated celebration we had a girl’s day enjoying the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea. Four of us made our way to the yacht on a chilly October day, with the rain clouds threatening overhead.

Stepping out from the dockside lift into the main lobby, we were greeted with an instant wow factor. The grand chandelier hung between the curved staircases, and we made our way up to the restaurant to be shown to our table. It was fairly quiet in the restaurant despite being 1pm on a Saturday, but we didn’t mind as we were here for two things: cakes and catch ups.

The staff were very attentive, and our hot drinks appeared in front of us in no time: two teas, two coffees. As we started to settle in, the plate stands were placed on the table and we got stuck in. I don’t know about you, but our method is start at the bottom with the sandwiches, and work our way up to the scones and then desserts.

My mum and I shared our plate stand, offering to swap sandwiches we each didn’t like. My favourite was the ham and mustard on soft, squidgy white bread, with just enough mustard to give it a hint of ohh without overpowering the thick slices of ham.

Moving up the scones, the age old debate of jam or cream first was quickly settled with a generous smooshing of both. I had an unusual selection of blackcurrant jam, and while initially I wasn’t sure, it turned out to be quite a nice change. The other pot of jam on our plate was raspberry, a firm favourite in my family to have with scones.

The top plate was calling to us, but we’re old hands at this afternoon tea game and knew the key was pacing. Thankfully we were in great company and managed to stretch our afternoon tea out over several hours, being offered top ups on our drinks at regular intervals. By the time we were ready to head off, any leftover food had really been sat out too long to request a doggy bag.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely! The yacht is very impressive, and although a large portion of it is the hotel, the view from the restaurant over the water is gorgeous. If it’s a sunny day and you can sit outside, just wow. There aren’t many places you can enjoy afternoon tea on a boat in London, so it has a unique feel to it.

The food was delicious and the service was excellent, what more could you ask for? Oh, price. In comparison to the cost of afternoon tea at some of London’s fancier spots, the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea is very reasonably priced, especially if you can snag a voucher on a discount website!

Another day in London means another Afternoon Tea spot obviously. And to keep things simple, Sabina had booked us in for Afternoon Tea at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in London.

So now I can confirm, I’ve stayed overnight in a yacht and I have had Afternoon Tea in a yacht too. The fact that it was moored, doesn’t need to come into it, its still a floating hotel.

After Breakfast we jumped onto the Emirates car cables and spent the day shopping at the O2. Afternoon Tea after a day of shopping was needed, and so we jumped back on to the cables and made our way back to the Sunborn yacht hotel.

Once again I was blown away, as soon as you enter the yacht hotel you leave the hustle and bustle of London behind. And the entrance feels just like a Cruise ship should, with the spiral glass staircase and grand chandelier

Afternoon Tea is served at The Lands End restaurant, and we managed to get a seat with a view. A view of the London rain pouring down, but nevertheless its a view right?

The Land Ends Restaurant

The overall look of the restaurant is very vintage, the blue carpets with the anchors, the wooden tables, combination straight up chairs, mirrored ceilings, all with gold warm tones, dimly lit, warm.

It almost has a Gentlemen’s room feeling, like I was expecting a couple of men in tuxedos with cigars to walk through with bourbon glasses. (Yes. I am visualising a scene from the Titanic)

Drinks Menu

The afternoon tea at the Sunborn comes with a bubbly- obviously we don’t have alcohol, so the waitress helped us out with some non-alcoholic fizz to start.

For teas their was a selection of 4 available, 2 types of coffees, and hot chocolate was also offered. I always go for the box standard English breakfast to start , and if I feel inventive we had a option to change it midway.

Sandwiches and Scones

I don’t think I’ve ever had this many options of sandwiches in a vegetarian afternoon tea.

for sandwiches we had

• Spiced tofu sandwiches,
• Mature chedder cheese and chutney,
• Classic cucumber with yoghurt dill and chive,
• Avocado with cream cheese
• Red cabbage with spiced tofu.

We had super warm scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, they were so soft, warm and buttery.

Sweet treats

And the top tier and the prettiest was a selection of sweet treats

• Rhubarb Panna Cotta,
• Chocolate Ganache Brownie,
• Almond Tart

I loved the environment, the overall look, it actually felt like we were on a cruise. I love that they have kept the whole vintage look of a cruise ship, the dim colours and masculine 1900’s kinda vibes.

The afternoon tea was really nice, I loved the creativity of the sandwiches which is usually rare when you go for vegetarian afternoon tea. The scones were warm and fresh which always is a bonus. Tea and drinks were topped up on request, and the desserts were delectable.

The customer service was second to none, the lady that served us was warm, friendly and attentive to our needs.

Altogether an absolute fabulous day, and I would recommend Afternoon Tea here in a heartbeat. Even if it is just to see the Interior and get the fabulous photo at the staircase.

If you can book it on a warm day when the suns shining, I’m sure Afternoon Tea on the deck overlooking the Thames and Canary Wharf would be out of this world

At Sunborn London we value traditions and believe in importance of knowledge of the local heritage. Therefore we have named our restaurant Lands End – the name given to Victoria Docks area by George Bidder in 1840’s.

It was in the mid-1800s that the Victoria Docks came to life. In 1847 the well-known Victorian engineer George Bidder completed his railway from Stratford to North Woolwich. This new line was south of Canning Town followed the line of what is now Silvertown Way and North Woolwich Road, was called “Bidders Folly” because it passed through completely undeveloped marshland. George Bidder sensed the potential of the area and soon he had bought up the whole of the marshes between Bow Creek and Galleons Reach. He called the area “Lands End” and soon his investment was showing a handsome return as the land was sold for the docks and for a belt of factories along the River.

“fantastic atmosphere with delicious tea” Review of Silk Lounge

It's one of my favorite cafes in Moscow, where I like meeting with my friends for a cup of tea or coffee. Last time we ordered sea-buckthorn tea, which was served with two tiny side deserts, we enjoyed a lot. The most interesting thing about this place is the fantastic atmosphere with light music background, a wonderful view from the windows and a beautiful interior. Looking forward to visiting this place again to my next trip to Moscow!

I went here for a late breakfast and coffee in March while I was waiting to meet my Russian friend. I would recommend sitting near one of the windows so you can see the people passing by outside and snow falling.

Located in the Four Seasons directly off the Lobby. It was during New Years and was decorated in all the festive decor. We came for afternoon tea and a bite to eat, taking a warm break from the Winter Festival. The staff was very welcoming and sat us quickly. We had tea, beer and Borsch. The drinks arrived and the food quickly followed. My friend said the Borsch was extremely tasty. He became very quiet and the next thing I saw was that the soup was completely eaten. He followed with a Russian beer, which hit the spot. They have many selections of tea to choose and I tried a different one each day. This became our afternoon spot each day we were at Red Square. One day my friend tried the burger and it was huge. This is upscale in every way and the service is impeccable. I highly recommend, especially for tea or a cocktail. It's a comfortable experience.

It's my first time to give 1star to any place I visit. Very bad service and slow. I order lamb biyani for more than45minute and staff keep saying 2minute. When I asked manager. They told that this need 30minute to cook. So what I waiting for almost a hour.

We experienced the Silk Lounge a couple of times during our stay. The staff was very attentive and we enjoyed just relaxing in the space.

Bottom Line

A Moscow institution since opening in 1907, the Metropol oozes history and is a throwback to pre-Revolution Russia. While it might not have the "wow" factor of newer hotels, this luxury property has more antique charm. The 388 rooms are spacious and Old-World elegant, and all come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel's small indoor pool, sauna, and fitness center are welcome complements to its decadent dining options: a modern Russian-Scandinavian restaurant, an elegant cocktail bar, and a vast Art Nouveau dining hall with gourmet blini-and-caviar breakfast buffet accompanied by harp music. Prices are fair given the hotel's iconic status and prime location in central Moscow. It's also worth considering The Hotel National, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which has similar style and features, though is closer to The Kremlin and Red Square.

Opened in 1907, the Metropol is the largest existing Moscow hotel built before the 1917 Russian Revolution. Over the years the hotel has hosted the likes of Sergei Prokofiev, Mao Zedong, George Bernard Shaw, Marlene Dietrich, and John Steinbeck. The Metropol still evokes pre-Revolutionary Russia and retains many original Art Nouveau elements. The classic and clean white facade features a brass entrance complete with topiaries and retro signage. An ornately patterned rug leads down a hallway to the two-level marble lobby. There's a striking elevator bank, with wood paneling and stained glass, and a mirrored elevator carpeted in rich ruby-red. The high-ceilinged dining hall is another particularly impressive space. It features stained-glass windows, marble pillars, a leaded-glass roof, ornate lamps, and a central fountain. Michael Jackson once played the piano in this room, and these days, breakfast is accompanied by soft harp music. The Metropol attracts well-heeled tourists, who appreciate its elegance, antique feel, and prime location that's just a short stroll from Red Square. With its extensive meeting facilities, the hotel also attracts a fairly brisk conference trade.

Central Moscow location a 10-minute walk from Red Square and Lenin's Tomb

It's hard to beat this hotel's excellent location in central Moscow, as it's just across the street from the Teatralnaya Metro station and a three-minute walk from the Bolshoi Theatre. The State Historical Museum is an eight-minute walk from the hotel, and it will only take 10 minutes to reach the center of Red Square and Lenin's Mausoleum on foot. The Kremlin is a little under 15 minutes away on foot, as is the colorfully iconic St. Basil's Cathedral. Dormition Cathedral is just under 20 minutes away on foot. Expect a 15-minute metro ride or 25-minute walk (if it's warm enough) to reach The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The center of Gorky Park is about 30 minutes away by a combination of walking and metro. Guests coming from Domodedovo International Airport will drive about an hour to reach Hotel Metropol. Sheremetyevo Airport is about 40 minutes away depending on traffic. Alternatively, both airports can be reached by metro in an hour as well.

Elegant and spacious rooms with minibars, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and handmade bonbons

The elegant rooms and suites at Metropol Moscow come in a variety of categories and bed configurations. They get good natural light and are clean and quiet, despite the hotel's city-center location. Evocative of the hotel's late 19th- and early 20th-century origins, rooms embrace classical decor that includes liberal use of dark woods and heavy, floral-print curtains and upholstery. Many rooms feature elements like parquet wood floors, silk wallpaper, crown molding, crystal chandeliers, antique furniture and lamps, and original paintings. Some room walls, however, feel a little under-decorated, a look that's created by the sheer size of the rooms and the small gilt-framed artwork that's been hung on the walls. The palette is mainly shades of gold, brown, and green, while some rooms have touches of rose and pink, and pretty brass mirrors hang above wooden writing desks in many rooms. 

Standard and Superior Rooms range from 269 to 323 square feet (25 to 30 square meters), and most Superior Rooms have views of the neighboring Teatralnaya Square and Bolshoi Theatre. Minibars and free bottled water are provided, though not all rooms have coffee- and tea-making facilities. There are flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi in all rooms. Air-conditioning and safes come standard as well. Free bonbons from the hotel pastry chef are a nice added touch. Suites have elegant sitting areas, and some have bedrooms with alcoves, while others have two separate small rooms. Rooms at the Metropol are all non-smoking. 

Bathrooms are clean and well lighted, but some are a little small. All have shower/tub combos with deep-soaking tubs, as well as premium bath products by Molton Brown or Asprey (suites have higher-end products). Bathrobes and slippers come with all rooms.

Metropol Moscow has a good array of features for its guests, and unlike many historic city-center hotels, the Metropol offers leisure facilities, including a small indoor pool, a sauna, and a fitness center. A definite highlight of a stay at the hotel is breakfast in the grand dining hall under the leaded-glass dome. Accompanied by soft music, the buffet features a blini pancake station with caviar and salmon, seasonal fresh fruit, cereals, egg dishes, and freshly baked pastries. Unfortunately it's not included in room rates. Savva Restaurant serves New Russian and Scandinavian cuisine, which combines traditional Russian dishes with fresh seasonal ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. Set in a classic space with marble columns, stucco ceilings, and Art Nouveau chandeliers, the elegant Chaliapin Bar serves classic cocktails and also offers light fare and an afternoon tea. Room service is available 24 hours. The hotel also has a business center and extensive meeting facilities, including 18 rooms and a conference center. Concierge service, baggage assistance, and free limited self-parking are available. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
