Upon boarding the Silhouette the innovative use of space will become immediately evident. Its unrivaled master cabin has earned its designers the distinction of being builders of some of the most desirable mega yachts in their category. The Silhouette 760 has won the South African Boating award for the best sailing craft over 10 meters. The yachts are well known in the charter market and have been extremely successful and have won numerous prestigious charter awards annually. Wherever the Silhouette goes it turns heads and is showered with accolades.

As a policy, the manufacturer only supplies vessels that are very comprehensively equipped with the latest and best equipment. This maintains the good name of the Silhouette design and protects the owner’s investment. Most of our competitors charge extra for much of what we supply as standard. Options such as a carbon fiber mast and boom, Aramid (Carbon) side stays, powered self-tailing winches, quality grade sails, motorized blinds, frameless glass shower cubicles, laminated glass window panes, a large LED TV in the saloon, lightweight carbon fiber gang planks, etc. are standard on the Silhouette. The Silhouette 800 offers the best value no matter how measured; be it in price, performance, space, ease of sail handling, useful deck area, headroom, and other features such as separate laundry, workshop, machine rooms, crew quarters, and aesthetics, etc. Nevertheless to give our customers maximum flexibility we invite their input.

Much attention has been given to minimizing the weight of the vessel. Many of the walls have synthetic finishes rather than the traditional veneer-cladded walls. This reduction in weight significantly contributes to the already spectacular performance of the vessel.

The intelligent use of space has enabled the yacht to accommodate 10 guests and 6 crew in generous on-suite cabins where the luxury of space will be felt.

With the large number of guests that are able to be accommodated on the vessel and with the level of service expected on a yacht of this size and stature, the design boasts a large well-equipped galley on bridge deck level. The galley is complimented with ample refrigeration, plenty of work space, large storage cupboards, and allowing for the crew to cater to the guest's every need.

The yacht has also been laid out with the crew requirements in mind. It has been provided with generously appointed crew quarters located in the starboard forward section of the hulls with an on-suite bathroom and ample storage. The Captain and partner have a private cabin immediately forward of the galley.

The laundry and workshop are accessed through the Captain’s cabin. The laundry is fitted with genuine commercial-grade laundry equipment. This reduces the dependency of the yacht on shoreside laundry facilities and increases the level of service available to the guests onboard.

In keeping with the designer's minimalistic and simplicity in design, a large open flybridge has been incorporated into the design where all sailing operations are performed from a central point. This allows for a reduction in the crew needed to sail the yacht and increases the safety of both the crew and guests onboard. A large electronically operated dive platform has been added off the aft dive deck to the yacht which is able to be used for lifting the tender, lounging on a deck chair with your feet in the water, or as a swimming platform. The lifting platform is raised and lowered by a simple push button switch. 

+ Construction

The primary structure of the yacht is  Epoxy   GRP sandwich  construction throughout, the core of which is a high-density closed cell PVC foam that has been thermo-formed to shape to reduce weight and to eliminate square cut edges for the prevention of moisture migration. All composite laminates use Epoxy resin, are vacuum-consolidated, and post-cured for extra strength.  

• The fiberglass reinforcing and epoxy resin used in the construction of the vessel conforms to ISO 9002 or better quality control procedures Epoxy resin is used in all structural members and polyester resin in the non-structural areas
• Stitched E-glass engineered fabrics is used throughout with Carbon reinforcing in places 
• Core material: Thermo formed rigid closed cell PVC foam is to be used in the hull, decks, floors and bulkheads and Polyethylene honeycomb in the bridge deck and fly bridge floor, and marine plywood in high stress areas
• Bulkheads are resin infused for planeness and strength
• Laminates are vacuum consolidated
• All core materials to cured laminates.

The Silhouette 760 aim is to create a modern stylish production sailing mega catamaran with exceptionally attractive lines. It is intended to lavish 10 guests in sheer luxury and entertain them with a host of fun water toys. Spaciousness was given priority over maximizing the number of cabins. The catamaran platform was chosen because of its inherent stability.  The level of luxury provided by the Silhouette compares to the best hotel. Its spacious master suite is truly spectacular and is positioned at bridge deck level to give it a commanding view. It boasts a knee height king size bed, full bath room (with bath and enclosed shower), electronic blinds, walk in clothes closet, settee and office.  The four sizable guest cabins too are very enviable; any one of them out strips the master suite on many far larger sized vessels. The beds in the guest cabins are Queen sized and are at knee level. For versatility the bed in one of the cabins is able to convert into two single beds.  The yacht has fine finishes throughout and its windows have remote controlled electronic blinds. Every cabin has a flat LCD TV and a large one in the saloon that is on a TV lift to hide it from view whilst it is not in use. Throughout the yacht the head room is generous 6’ 8” minimum.  The shaded cockpit is able to be enclosed with awnings during inclement weather. As an added attraction the yacht has a large fly bridge that presents panoramic views of its surroundings. All sailing operations are conducted from this area and it provides the crew with a good vantage point. The fly bridge has a mini bar and ample padded seating for guest comfort. The aft end of the bridge deck has hoisting tackle to raise the tender out of the water and eliminate the need for davits.  The steps in the wide transoms are attractively fanned to provide free movement between the water and cockpit. To make disembarking from a tender easy the inboard sides of the transoms are sculptured to form a tender dock. The lowest step is large enough to accommodate a number of people standing and it is contoured to receive the swim ladder when it is not in use.  Aft of the cockpit is a shaded swim platform with storage lockers for the life raft and small water toys. For SCUBA divers the area will be convenient o which to assemble their equipment and enter the water. Immediately forward of the transoms are storage lockers that are able to house 12 SCUBA tanks per side.  In the starboard bow there is a separate laundry with a commercial washing machine and clothes drier. It is also a good space in which to house a dive compressor.  To attract good staff the crew quarters are enviable and private. The captain’s cabin has a lofted bed and finishes in keeping with the rest of the yacht. It also has an office space for him to do his paper work in privacy. The facilities at the crew’s disposal have been given importance to enable them to maintain the yacht in the good order, to prepare top class cuisine, and to offer the level of service that is expected of them.  The Silhouette 760 is an enviable prestige private luxury yacht with a master suite that stands out against those found on mega power boats. In the Caribbean the yacht has proved to be one of the most successful and popular charter vessels in the region without having to rearrange its interior.

This popular little bilge keeler originally built by Hurleys of Plymouth, is immaculate. The hull is faultless and down below she is unmarked. New side and forward saloon windows. I doubt whether there is a better condition Silhouette available on the market and viewing is a must. For anyone looking for a daysailer/weekender you could step on this boat and sail her away.

Attractive and seaworthy little ships. But as with most boats of that era – no significant built in buoyancy

Robert Tucker designed many pocket cruisers that were built mainly in the 1950s to 1970s. I have owned three of his designs and my absolute favourites are the little Silhouette 17 Marks 2 and 3 with bilge keels.

I first saw one of these charming craft on the hard at Bosham. The owners had gone to the Anchor Bleu for dinner to return for the night on their little ship before departing with the tide at dawn.

Their boat sat comfortably upright, unlike my own boat and others lying at varying angles. I got chatting to them and they were so pleased with their craft’s performance that they were happy to put up with its limited headroom, 3ft 7in for sitting only.

Taken by the Silhouette 17’s serpentine sheer, build quality and robust looks I decided to buy one. They can be real bargains.

My opportunity came when I saw one advertised at Littlehampton. She was in good order and lying in a mud and sand berth by the yacht club and the owner wanted her moved quickly to avoid further berthing and harbour dues, which were imminent.

We agreed on a price and it was down to me to move her as soon as possible. I decided to take her by road to Rye.

I had a Jeep and a good new road trailer but needed to lay a flat bed to take the bilge keels and constructed this with several layers of very thick ply.

Challenging collection

The collection day came and riding shotgun with me was my most useful chum, amateur engineer, enthusiastic sailor, multiple boat builder and retired head teacher Maurice.

He is by far the most useful person I know to have around when things go wrong which, as you will soon read, were about to.

The public slipway at Littlehampton is a little steep but the awkward bit is the soft mud at the lower end. I kept my 4×4 well clear and lowered the trailer with a stout rope.

The other problem of course is the tidal flow across the slipway which makes lining the boat up with the trailer difficult. And, of course, our endeavours attracted an ever growing crowd of interested holidaymakers offering much advice.

While I manned the winch and got ready to drive the Jeep, Maurice attempted to line things up. It was impossible without getting into deep water at the stern of the boat.

Maurice hesitated and said, ‘friendship ends at the knees’. And I didn’t fancy getting soaked either. To our rescue came the boat’s owner who was only too keen to get her away.

He immediately stripped off to his underpants and jumped in. This was great entertainment for the grockles who by now were sitting, firmly ensconced and licking their cornets.

With some difficulty battling against the ebbing tide we got the boat aligned and I quickly pulled her up the slip before she floated off again. Even on the dry part of the slipway the Jeep struggled to get a grip. Eventually we succeeded.

There followed an awkward drive through narrow lanes with a Jeep that would not come out of 4WD. Maurice’s engineering skills proved useful once again to resolve this.

The slow journey east was then fairly uneventful until we got close to the boat park when the port side bilge keel burst through the ply flatbed I’d made and the whole load developed and awkward list.

We were prepared for most trailer eventualities but did not expect the floor to give way. I suppose half the weight of the boat was pushing down on the narrow surface area of one keel. Even so, given the thickness of ply it was a surprise.

Next day I was easily able to just float her off the trailer at Rye Harbour and take her upriver to her new mooring close to the Strand Quay.

It was a soft mud drying berth and those bilge keels went all the way down into the mud. When the tide came in she was held tight for a while until sufficient buoyancy lifted her like a cork from a bottle. In time she dug her own hole and this eased.

Silouette 17: A worthy purchase

The years of sailing that followed were great fun. She was never a fast boat but sailed upright and coped very well in the short, steep waves encountered in Rye Bay and in particular over the famous bar.

I would sail the Silhouette 17 with larger yachts and in conditions when many small 17ft boats would wisely remain in the harbour. She was a good sea boat with a self-draining cockpit. In flat water the Silhouette leaves a very clean wake.

DIY buoyancy

My only concern was a lack of buoyancy or watertight compartments. She was a little small to take an inflatable on deck so I did my best to improve buoyancy by making the compartments at least semi watertight and made sure that I had a few pumps and a bucket in the event of a holing – though she was very heavily constructed.

One particular feature I liked was the semi-well for the outboard motor. I liked to keep the motor at the ready when entering the harbour in case I lost wind by the steep bank.

There’s very little room for manoeuvre or error at the entrance. For those unfamiliar with the entrance to the Rother it is straight and narrow and used by coastal vessels of a fair size. One needs to keep a listening watch on the VHF and also look out for the harbour warning lights.

One should not enter or leave the river when a coastal vessel is moving or about to move in it. I sometimes call the harbour master for advice if I’m unsure of shipping movements.

Bilge keels mean the Silhouette is easy to keep on the hard

There are many variations of the Silhouette 17 design. After the first design there were Marks 2, 3, 4, 5, SV, S20 and S21. Details of all these variations are provided on the Silhouette Owners Association website .

I also owned a Mk2 for a number of years which I found lying at a marina up Thorney Channel in Chichester Harbour.

This was a most attractive boat, chined like a wooden boat might be and beautifully fitted out. A principle difference was that she had a ballasted stub keel and twin metal plate bilge keels, all held on with keel bolts and relatively easy to remove and replace if need be.

It’s difficult to compare the performance of the Silhouette 17 Mk2 with the Mk3 – perhaps the Mk2 was a tad faster and wetter. The Mk3 was drier, had a self draining cockpit and had the better outboard arrangement. If I was to choose again I think I’d go for the Mk2 because of its traditional looks.

However, that is not my forte; I gravitate towards the timeless appeal of Chuck Taylors, the retro charm of New Balance, and, today, the enduring appeal of a classic leather sneaker. With time, the silhouettes have become more refined, the linings and footbeds more comfortable. Better materials are used with sustainability in mind, and the color options run the gamut. However, there are a few things to look for in the best dress sneakers.

Silhouette: Like their leather-soled counterparts, dress sneakers should embody a slimmer profile for a refined aesthetic, almost resembling a derby-style shoe.
