Launch of Barong D, the latest Wally 110

The 33,5-meter Barong D is the third Wally delivered to a faithful repeat client, a truly passionate and experienced yachtsman who replaced his Wally 94 Barong C , which in turn in 2005 substituted his first Wally , the 80-footer Barong B of 2000. The Frers naval architecture created the latest generation hi performance super yacht characterised by the wide hull uniquely camouflaged by classic lines reflecting Barong D’s cruising attitude.

“Wally employed all its advanced  know-how to produce a fully equipped cruising super yacht displacing only 65 tons: two tons lighter than predicted, and approximately 35% less than the other yachts in this size range! – enthusiastically describes Luca Bassani , Wally President and CEO – We succeeded in delivering a truly exceptional performance cruiser that accommodates in full comfort the owners who spend several months of the year on-board”. The interior styling is developed by Wally and combines pickled oak for the joinery with dark blue upholstery and gloss carbon soles. The outside colour scheme is also very elegant combining the majestic blue of the hull with the blonde teak and beige upholstery”.

Barong D is the 44 th sailing yacht launched by the Monegasque brand. Her delivery is scheduled at the end of May , after two weeks of sea trials.

Wally 110 Barong D 35.5-metre superyacht launches

The Wally 110 Barong D has been launched during a private ceremony hosted by its owners and including the team involved in the design and construction of the 33.5-metre superyacht.

This yacht is the third delivery to a repeat client and experience yachtsman who had replaced his Wally 94 Barong C, which in turn in 2005 substituted his first Wally, the 80-footer Barong B of 2000.

Frers naval architecture created the latest generation high-performance vessel characterised by the wide hull.

Luca Bassani, president and chief executive of Wally, said: “Wally employed all its advanced know-how to produce a fully equipped cruising super yacht displacing only 65 tons: two tons lighter than predicted, and approximately 35% less than the other yachts in this size range. We succeeded in delivering a truly exceptional performance cruiser that accommodates in full comfort the owners who spend several months of the year on-board.”

The interior has been built in blocks to achieve the maximum quality while reducing the weight.

The yacht features a high modulus carbon mast and furling boom, carbon rigging, titanium deck hardware and fittings, resin and vacuum bonding of the teak wood to the deck.

The interior layout reflects the owners’ extensive cruising requirements, featuring the forward owner’s suite with two large separate beds to favour the comfort under sail, a double guest cabins on each side, and a spacious main saloon amidships.

The crew and service area with galley, crew mess, two double cabins, and the engine room is aft to provide max privacy and all cabins have en suites. The vessel can accommodate six guests and four members of crew.

Body of last victim left missing after tech magnate Mike Lynch's family yacht sank off Sicily is recovered

Divers have recovered the remains of the last person who was left missing when the superyacht Bayesian sank early Monday off the coast of Sicily, the head of the island's Civil Protection agency, Salvo Cocina, told CBS News on Friday. The body has been brought to shore, not been formally identified. 

It is believed to be that of Hannah Lynch, British  tech magnate Mike Lynch 's 18-year-old daughter, according to Italian media. 

Mike Lynch's body was retrieved Thursday from inside the sunken vessel, which was left resting on the seabed at a depth of more than 160 feet, at a 90 degree angle, making rescue efforts complicated and dangerous. 

Shortly after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht sank, the body of the ship's cook was recovered from the water near the wreck. Divers managed to retrieve four other bodies from the Bayesian on Wednesday, including two Americans.

With the recovery of the body on Friday, the total number of victims rises to seven, accounting fully for all of those who were on the boat owned by Mike Lynch's wife Angela Bacares. 

Fifteen people survived the sinking, including Bacares. The survivors were found on a life raft by the captain of a boat that had been anchored nearby.

Prosecutors have been questioning survivors and witnesses to determine what could have caused the luxury superyacht, equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment, to sink within what witnesses said was a matter of minutes during a storm.

Maltese falcon.

Length : 88m Builder : Perini Navi Year : 2006

Maltese Falcon is undoubtedly one of the most unique and technologically innovative sailing superyachts in the world – kitted out with radical unstayed masts made of "weapons-grade" carbon fibre, a FalconRig and computerised sail and mast control system. She took a staggering six years to complete and her 2023 refit at Lusben was suitably thorough while remaining sensitive to the yacht's heritage, as BOAT International discovered . Maltese Falcon also recently attended the 2024 St Barths Bucket .

Aristarchos

Length : 39.9m Builder : Nautor Swan Year : 2006

The largest Swan built to date, Aristarchos was built for and by an experienced yachtsman as his third Swan and has sailed under the same owner ever since. A series of extensive refits – the most recent in 2021 – has left her in sail-away condition, including a refreshed "Panamax" carbon-fibre mast, boom, spreaders and boom-vang. She tops out at 13.5 knots and is currently on the market for €7,500,000 .

Racing entries

Length : 55.7m Builder : Perini Navi Year : 2003

The first unit in the shipyard's 56M series, Burrasca blazed the trail for her following ten sisterships, including the most recent delivery Fidelis . An aluminium hull rather than the yard’s former choice of steel combined with a slippery hull line optimised by Ron Holland , and a deep, ballasted centreboard gives her much improved sailing performance over her Perini predecessors.

Length : 49.8m Builder : Perini Navi Year : 2000

Almyra II (ex Felicità West ) is owned by Greek-born Ilia Rigas who won it in a tense bidding war between herself and an unnamed Russian. Rigas is also a World Superyacht Awards judge and the co-organiser of the Cyclades Cup. The yacht is the second unit in the shipyard's 50M steel-hulled series and underwent a sensitive refit in 2021 that transformed her into a stylish family yacht with an interior aesthetic described as "Hermès meets Ralph Lauren".

Length : 45m Builder : Perini Navi Year : 2010

According to Perini Navi, this sailer belongs "to one of the most distinguished Greek families" and was built as a gift to the owner's family. A twin-screw propulsion system sets Fivea apart among her three sisterships, while her in-house interiors are "distinctively nautical". She is also captained by the owner himself and can reach a top speed of 14 knots.

Length : 42.9m Builder : Vitters Year : 2002

This all-aluminium cruiser has circumnavigated the globe twice. La Belle (ex African Queen ) has a draft limited to under 3.9 metres, a high-stability hull shape and a streamlined deckhouse and cockpit that promises "powerful performance" according to the shipyard. She was designed by Dubois Naval Architects Design while her mahogany interiors are owed to RWD .

Length : 42.9m Builder : Holland Jachtbouw Year : 2005

Seabiscuit (ex This is Us ) was designed inside and out by Andre Hoek and features a keel design and structure "revolutionary for a yacht of this size". According to the shipyard, she is also the first neoclassical schooner with a high aspect ratio lifting keel and a spade rudder. Seabiscuit was triumphant in the 2012 St Barts Bucket Regatta and her six-month refit in 2013 also secured her a nomination at the World Superyacht Awards .

Christianne B

Length : 42m Builder : Perini Navi Year : 1986

Christianne B was originally built for a treasure hunter and reproduces all the features of La Numero Uno – Perini Navi's first ever yacht – on a slightly larger scale. She circumnavigated the globe immediately after her launch which was quite the feat at the time. The yacht cruises at 11 knots and reaches a top speed of 15 knots.

Length : 32.7m Builder : Pendennis Year: 1998

Wally B is characterised by open uncluttered desk and constructed from carbon composite – making her light, fast and simple to handle under sail. Her outer skin in 100 per cent Kevlar while her inner skin is carbon, separated by a structural foam core. Described as "simple as a dinghy and as fast as a Maxi racer", she was designed by Brenta Design and is able to reach a maximum speed of 12 knots.

WinWin remains true to her name with wins at the 2016 Superyacht Cup as well as a three-year streak of victories at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Superyacht Cup Palma. A 7.9-metre beam at the transom and low displacement means she can be handled by a crew of four thanks to a design by Javier Jaudenes . WinWin has been designed to take a square-topped racing main and has a bolt-on bowsprit that will allow for more powerful kites.

The newest delivery on this list, Barong D was developed for an existing client of the Italian builder who previously owned the 28.5-metre Barong C and 24-metre Barong B. The all-carbon sloop was designed by Frers Naval Architecture  and was created with power and performance in mind. "Wally employed all its advanced know-how to produce a fully equipped cruising superyacht displacing only 65 tons: two tons lighter than predicted," explained president and CEO Luca Bassani.

The bodies of UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and four of his guests on the superyacht Bayesian have been recovered, three days after it sank off the coast of Sicily, according to Italian officials.

The officials said the bodies of Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance and Jonathan Bloomer , chair of insurance group Hiscox and Morgan Stanley International, alongside their wives, Neda Morvillo and Judy Bloomer, have been retrieved.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing, after Bayesian went down in an intense storm near Palermo on Monday.

The five bodies were pulled from the sunken yacht on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The body of Recaldo Thomas, the boat’s chef, had been retrieved earlier in the week.

The officials asked not to be named as they were not authorised to speak publicly.

No formal identification of the bodies has been announced by the local authorities. The Italian public prosecutor is charged with making the official determination of the deaths.

A representative for the Morvillo family spoke of their “tremendous loss”.

“We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy,” they said.

A Bloomer family spokesperson described their “unimaginable grief”.

“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family,” they said. “Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.”

A spokesperson for the Lynch family declined to comment.

David Tabizel, who helped Lynch set up Autonomy, paid tribute to his “exhausting, exhilarating and incisive” friend, describing him as a “witty, loyal polymath with a mind like a razor blade”.

Brent Hoberman, the investor and entrepreneur who co-founded Lastminute.com and Founders Forum, said Lynch was a “pioneering titan of UK technology”. “He was an outlier and an original thinker,” he said.

Lord John Browne, former chief executive of BP, said Lynch “should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK”.

Suranga Chandratillake, former US chief technology officer at Autonomy and now investor at Balderton Capital, called Lynch’s death an “incalculable loss to UK tech”, as well as a “hugely inspirational friend who would always have time to help you find a solution [with] a sense of humour [and] a cup of builder’s tea”.

The trip on Bayesian had been planned as a celebration of Lynch’s recent acquittal on US fraud charges, after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his software group Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

Morvillo represented Lynch in his recent US case, and Bloomer appeared at the trial as a witness for the defence.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 survivors rescued in the early hours of Monday morning.

Italian and UK authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the shipwreck after some eyewitnesses claimed the yacht sank in just a matter of minutes.

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italian Sea Group, which owns Bayesian’s manufacturers Perini Navi, told the Financial Times that the 56-metre, British-registered yacht was “absolutely safe”. ISG’s tracking data shows it took 16 minutes from the time Bayesian started dragging its anchor until it sank.

A team of divers has struggled for days to access the interior cabins of the 540-tonne yacht, due to the volume of debris inside a wreck that lies 50 metres below the surface.
