San Juan 26

San Juan 26 is a 25 ′ 1 ″ / 7.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Don Clark and built by Clark Boat Company starting in 1975.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of San Juan 26

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for San Juan 26 is about 108 kg/cm, alternatively 605 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 108 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 605 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Compression tester set up for testing. The hose is screwed into a glow plug hole after removing a glow plug. Note: This is a mock up to illustrate the tester placement, but this is a tester for a gasoline engine, not a diesel because it only goes up to 300 psi. A diesel tester would go up to 1000 psi. Also, ALL of the glow plugs should be removed, not just one. In addition, the hose is not actually screwed in because the fitting is the wrong size. (Photo/ Phil Decker)

The San Juan 24

A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.

While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

Owner Boat Reviews

Thoughts on the sanderling, pocketship, caledonia yawl, phoenix iii, and san juan 21.

We assumed, when surveying Small Craft Advisor readers about boats they own and enjoy sailing, that the responses would be dominated by maybe three dozen small-boat designs, so it was a shock when 346 readers shared their thoughts about more than 200 different designs!

As a result, with so many boats to consider, we’ve turned what might have been one summary article into a series of Owner Review features.

This time we feature six designs—four that can be home-built of wood, along with two older fiberglass production-boat designs…one that’s been available longer than almost any camp-cruising sailboat. —Eds

MARSHALL SANDERLING

A traditional-looking large-volume boat admired by SCA readers is the Marshall Sanderling, an 18-foot catboat—one of the oldest continuously produced fiberglass boats on the market, with more than 850 hulls finished by Marshall Marine since the start of production in 1962.

Like most catboat designs, the Sanderling offers a huge cockpit and roomy cabin when compared to most other daysailers and camp cruisers in the 18-foot range.

san juan 26 sailboat review

With an overall length of 18'-2,"beam of 8'-6" and draft of 19” with the centerboard up and 4'-4" with the board down, the spacious Sanderling can daysail five or six comfortably, overnight or cruise a couple, and deal with almost all kinds of conditions.

San Juan 28 - Sailing Qualities?

  • Add to quote

I'm considering purchase of a San Juan 28 in the Puget Sound area. I've looked her over at the dock while traveling through the area, but was unable to arrange a test sail during the limited time I was down there (I live in Alaska, so it's an expensive round trip flight, weather/schedules precluded sailing). At the dock she looked well kept up. A marine surveyor has been contacted to do a survey. Before I go too far down this path, a couple questions: - How important is the test sail? Is not being able to do one a deal-breaker? - If I don't have an opportunity to do a test sail, what are other people's sailing experiences with these boats? Good/bad experiences welcome. Specifically, given the type of sailing I plan on doing, light-air capability, ability to work to windward, how stiff is she, motion in waves, weather helm/balance, etc. She would be sailed on the inside passage, mostly daytrips, single or double-handed most of the time, occasional weekends. Experience tells me that most sails will end tacking several miles up a channel to get to the harbor. Winds around here tend be quite variable, but generally light. Tides can be squirrelly, as well.

san juan 26 sailboat review

One of these raced quite successfully on the local level in the 80s/90s, it's going to be a bit typical of the IOR influenced designs of the day. Whether or not to take a test sail ..... well, I doubt many sales fall through based on the sea trial unless it's a real one-off oddball or the trial turns up a mechanical/structural issue. But I'd sure like to have sailed it before plunking down any serious cash....

san juan 26 sailboat review

My previous boat was a San Juan 28. I found it to be very well balanced and tracked very well upwind. I generally sailed her in 5-15 knots with a full main and 120% headsail. Above 15 knots, I needed to reef the mainsail to keep the helm balanced. I found that she heeled quick to about 15 degrees, but then settled in and felt very stable. Downwind she was a bit of a handful, as the pinched stern tended to yaw quite a bit with a following sea. Had a couple of fun knock downs because of that, but it was sporty out and I had up a large A-sail. Both times she recovered nicely. Overall, she was a great solid boat, and since she was my first keel boat, has a special place in my memory. One maintenance note; check the chainplates for leaks. It's a weak point and caused at least one boat to lose her rig in the '80s sometime.

san juan 26 sailboat review

IIRC the San Juan 28 was a shortened San Juan 30 - they put a plug in the end of the mould to shorten it up. The SJ 30 was designed by Bruce Kirby as a production version of his personal 1/2 tonner "Accolade" that was built by the Gougeons - lots of info about it in their book.

san juan 26 sailboat review

hmmmmmm......have not heard of the 28 being a shortened 30! it was supposed to be a Clark design according to what I could dig up about it 5-6 yrs ago before buying my boat. Looked at them closely. Most have a mid 190's phrf rating, and do pretty well overall. I too have a mid 190 rating with my Jeanneau that is pretty similar in size etc. Altho with less pinched ends than a 28. Generally speaking, SJ's have a pretty good build rep, sailing rep etc. Some like the 26 are a bit sluggish. Not sure how that happened, but it did. Kirby did design the SJ30. Clark held off building it, so Kirby liked the design so well, he had Gudgeon's build him one. Clark then went and built a fiberglass one. marty

http://sanjuan21.net/clark_boat_company_5.pdf Check out that link and pdf, more info than you can shake a stick at on the clark boat company that built SJ's and many others local here in puget sound. marty

I have a SJ28 (in fact, she is for sale San Juan 28, 1980, Lake Ray Hubbard, Rockwall, Texas, sailboat for sale from Sailing Texas ) and she sails like a dream. I find that she points very well even with a roller furling. She handles heavy weather with ease though she won't hesitate to dip a rail if you have too much sail up (i.e., full 155% genoa and full mains'l in 20+ knot winds). In lighter winds she is very mild mannered. I find she balances very well with little effort. In fact, she balances so well I've used a jury-rigged tiller autohelm to steer her while close hauled in 15+ knot breezes. She is relatively light so carries some motion when in heavy seas but has no problem cutting through them. The most wind I've had her in was 50+ mph in a thunderstorm on the lake and she handled it gracefully (though was sailing near hull-speed bare polled). She is a well made boat and I will be very sad to see her go. Good luck and have fun!

Automatters & more: 221st anniversary — battle of san diego bay.

san juan 26 sailboat review

We were told that: “On March 17, 1803, Captain William Shaler and Captain Richard Clevelandsailed into San Diego Bay on the American Brig Leila Byrd to buy sea otter pelts, although suchtrading was forbidden by Spain. On the morning of March 22nd, Spanish soldados capturedmembers of the ship’s crew on the beach. Captain Cleveland rowed ashore, released his sailors, and captured a few soldados. As the ship departed, the soldados were tied to the masts in plainview of the shore. Fort Guijarros’ nine-pound cannons opened fire to prevent the Americans’escape. The Leila Byrd crew fired two broadsides at the fort with its six three-pound swivel guns.A hat was waved and both parties ceased firing, with no injuries except to pride and rigging. Thisis the only known ship-to-shore cannon battle to have occurred on the Pacific Coast between anAmerican merchant ship and Spanish forts. The Fort Guijarros site was designated as CaliforniaRegistered Historical Landmark No. 69 in 1982.”

Captain Jeff M. Yackeren, USN

Perhaps not coincidentally, an historic sailboat from the San Diego Maritime Museum sailed pastCoronado, just as the ceremony was about to commence. I believe that the ship was the SanSalvador, “the first European vessel to reach America’s West Coast” (for historical informationabout the San Salvador, visit https://sdmaritime.org/visit/the-ships/ at the San Diego MaritimeMuseum’s website).

The Master of Ceremonies was Jesus B. Benayas, President of the House of Spain in San Diego.Live music for this event was provided by the U.S. Navy Band Southwest. Distinguished guestsincluded Colonel Francisco Martin Alonso — Spanish Air Force (Engineers Corps), MajorAurelio Hinarejos-Rojo — Spanish Army Corp Polytechnic Engineers and LCDR PabloMontero Varela, C3F Chilean Liaison Officer.

Honorable Rosaura Morrow Picasso and Jesus B. Benayas

The flags of 1803 were raised by the Honorable Juan-Carlos Sanchez-Alonzo — Consul Generalof Spain in Los Angeles, and Captain Jeff M. Yackeren, USN — Commanding Officer, NavalBase Point Loma.

In his welcome address, Captain Yackeren reminded us that “Spain and the United States have along history of warmth, mutual aid and support. It is precisely this relationship and friendshipthat we celebrate today with a particular emphasis on the culture, the traditions, the cuisine andthe beauty of the great country of Spain.”

Captain Yackeren’s welcome was followed by comments from the Honorable Rosaura MorrowPicasso, Honorary Consul of Spain in San Diego: “In this very location, in 1803, Spain had itsmost westerly outpost in North America and what was going to become California. Spain’senlightened culture is represented here some 6,000 miles from Spain. Why was the Spanishculture enlightened? Spain was the very first nation to abolish slavery over 500 years ago, in1811. … before Britain, before France, before Poland, before Portugal and over 60 years beforethe United States’ Emancipation Proclamation.”

Participants at the event.

“Some say history is written by victors. … Well, we are here today to remember the Battle of SanDiego Bay in 1803 — and there were no victors, no victors. It was pretty much a skirmish. Noone won, no one lost and it wasn’t a political fight, but simply a disagreement over trading posts.… No injuries were recorded, no lives were lost.”

The Keynote Speaker was Commander Eduardo Almazán-García Campos — Spanish Navy(Engineers Corps), NILE Project Management Office, NAVWAR – San Diego. CommanderAlmazán-García Campos is stationed in San Diego as Spain’s National Representative at theNILE PMO, NAVWAR. He joined the Armada in 1999.

The House of Spain is one of Balboa Park’s International Cottages. San Diego is considered bymany to have the most active Spanish community in Southern California.

It would be remiss of me if I did not mention the House of Spain’s delicious paella. As you mayrecall from my coverage of the annual “December Nights” park-wide open house event inBalboa Park, the House of Spain prepares and serves a marvelous paella there every year. Formore information about the House of Spain, including a video about how they make theirpaellas, visit: www.houseofspainsd.org.

San Juan 23

Hello, new to the forum, 1st post. I just bought this SJ23 1979, all is well with the boat, so far. My question is about the 2 cockpit drain holes, one appears to drain fine, the other not, if i put the hose on the one working the water doesn't back up, on the one not working (port side) water doesn't drain as quick (backs up with hose).... Is there an access point to these drains? Could the water be going in the hull? Recommendations? (not Drano) I haven't been able to find any drawings/plans/blueprints on this boat. Thank you in advance. Alex

No, yes, not Drano. There might be an obstruction, see if you can run a wire to clear it. I would also be wary of the one that drains real fast as that could be the one leaking into the hull. Crawling into a cockpit lazarette might allow inspection of the drain conduits under the cockpit sole.

Thanks Benny, I'll se what I can find.

If the drains (scuppers) are like my 24 had, they are straight down through the stern lazarette and out just under the water line. You may be able to see the obstruction with a light from the top. A straight iron rod might loosen it.

Thank you Richard, too bad there isn't an plumbing schematic on these boats

Sorry, Alexvw- my wording is not quite accurate- the tubes go down through the crawl space under the cockpit, not the lazarette.

Hi, Any pictures on your boat I'm looking to buy a 1979 San Juan 23 any ideas or advice. I'm Boca Raton Fl. aadamiani@ gmail.com Thank you!

Good morning Alex D, I can't really give you a professional opinion, with that said, I've use the boat 5 times since purchase (July 2016, it seats at the St Cloud marina , and I sail on Lake Toho. The idea of purchase was to teach my kids about sailing, easy and quick access to it (instead of driving to the coast). So far the boat delivered , rigging is solid, maneuverability is good, I've single piloted this boat with no too much work (and I don't have a rolling furling for forward sail). The previous owner installed an electrical system with two batteries and a air conditioning (dock use only). It has the retractable Keel and Rudder, great for my area. It needs to have some hull Buffing (don't know how) and some other cosmetic stuff. Over roll I'm happy. Let me know how else I can help. Alex.

Great Thank you, happy sailing!

  1. San Juan 26, love or hate...

San Juan 24 - 219. San Juan 26 - 240. San Juan 7.7 (26') - 192. San Juan 28 - 180. This indicates it's no rocket - an SJ24 would have to give you 21 seconds a mile - a pretty big gap, especially for a smaller boat. The 7.7 is also 26' but is rated nearly a minute a mile faster. Some other boats and their ratings for comparison; Bayfield 32C - 240.

  2. San Juan 26, owners or anyone know about this boat?

Hi, There's a San Juan 26 footer for sale in my local area. It's different than the 28 in that I gather it's not as good of a performer but I can't find much info on the internet about this model except that that 28 was designed because the 26 was a bit of a disappointment. If there are any SJ 26 owners out there that can give me their opinions about this model of boat, I'd appreciate it!

  20. San Juan 21 Review

The SJ21 sails like a big dinghy & is best treated that way. Its sailplan is balanced, with slight lee helm in low winds and slight weather helm above 18 kts or 20 degrees of heel. The boat generally rounds up if overdriven. It prefers winds between 6-15kts and has a narrow groove of 10-15 degrees of heel.
