Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Any San Juan 28 owners?

Along with a bit faster and roomier - IMHO too! We looked at them, probably 1st on the list until we found our Jeanneau. Lots of them around the sound being as they were made in Kent or Renton or somewhere down that way originally. A good basic boat for this area, ie sailing in teh sound, san juans etc. Marty
"IF" speed is a thing you want, go to http://www.ussailing.org/phrf/Tool_%20HI_LO_AVG%20Report.pdf This is a hi-ave-low phrf rating for boats in the US. While PHRF is NOT the end all be all of speed for boats, it will give you a general prediciton. Hence for the two you mentioned, then this Jeanneau for sale in Belleingham, similar to mine but a bit smaller Jeanneau 201 - 222 - 213 Newport 186 - 198 - 192 San Juan 174 - 191 - 180 The Jeanneau is a bit smaller, has an out board, but probably a bit nicer more open interior than the Newport or San Juan. Not sure about price in general either. Others to look at include any of the Catalina's, 27, 28 or 30, Hunter, C&C, Cal, Ranger, Islander, Ericson among others that are very popular around here. Good luck in your quest. If you look at and buy the Jeanneau, there is an owners roundesvous at Poets Cove, a 5 star resort in the canadian Gulf Islands the third weekend in June. Islanders meet the same weekend at Port ludlow. A friend of mine has a 40'. I;ve also seen owners get togethers for Tartan, C&C, Hunter among others, You can get a list in the local 48 north rag. marty
My boat is a 1979 San Juan 26 I can tell you that the hull is very solid. San Juan hand laid thier hulls. My 26 is a good bit slower than a 28, my PHRF rating is 240, but still competative if you want to race. One of the negatives about these boats is the lack of ventilation something you may want to add if it hasn't been done already. Also there was a writup in Good Old Boat about the Clark Boat Company, who built San Juans. It was in the January/Febuary issue if you can get your hands on one.
San Juan 26 We sail a 26 on the Chesapeake. You are correct about the solid hand laid hull and the very poor venilation but not a blister and mine is a 76 and has survived 5 kids and many trips to the inner harbor and Annapolis and St Michaels. It wins me a bottle of wine at every club race for being last. Maybe it is the skipper. Charlie
Are you moored in PT now? or were you taking her to Seattle? Will probably be in PT the thrusday night and or monday night around teh June 21/22 weekend coming and going from bedwell harbor to and from Edmonds. Marty

We are also looking at a Newport 28, but the San Juan has a bit more gear and is less money. All opinions welcome. Thanks!!! Juli and Bill Click to expand...

The San Juan 24
A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.
While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

Hello, new to the forum, 1st post. I just bought this SJ23 1979, all is well with the boat, so far. My question is about the 2 cockpit drain holes, one appears to drain fine, the other not, if i put the hose on the one working the water doesn't back up, on the one not working (port side) water doesn't drain as quick (backs up with hose).... Is there an access point to these drains? Could the water be going in the hull? Recommendations? (not Drano) I haven't been able to find any drawings/plans/blueprints on this boat. Thank you in advance. Alex
No, yes, not Drano. There might be an obstruction, see if you can run a wire to clear it. I would also be wary of the one that drains real fast as that could be the one leaking into the hull. Crawling into a cockpit lazarette might allow inspection of the drain conduits under the cockpit sole.
Thanks Benny, I'll se what I can find.
Richard Bryer
If the drains (scuppers) are like my 24 had, they are straight down through the stern lazarette and out just under the water line. You may be able to see the obstruction with a light from the top. A straight iron rod might loosen it.
Thank you Richard, too bad there isn't an plumbing schematic on these boats
Sorry, Alexvw- my wording is not quite accurate- the tubes go down through the crawl space under the cockpit, not the lazarette.
Hi, Any pictures on your boat I'm looking to buy a 1979 San Juan 23 any ideas or advice. I'm Boca Raton Fl. aadamiani@ gmail.com Thank you!
Good morning Alex D, I can't really give you a professional opinion, with that said, I've use the boat 5 times since purchase (July 2016, it seats at the St Cloud marina , and I sail on Lake Toho. The idea of purchase was to teach my kids about sailing, easy and quick access to it (instead of driving to the coast). So far the boat delivered , rigging is solid, maneuverability is good, I've single piloted this boat with no too much work (and I don't have a rolling furling for forward sail). The previous owner installed an electrical system with two batteries and a air conditioning (dock use only). It has the retractable Keel and Rudder, great for my area. It needs to have some hull Buffing (don't know how) and some other cosmetic stuff. Over roll I'm happy. Let me know how else I can help. Alex.
Great Thank you, happy sailing!

San Juan 24 - 219. San Juan 26 - 240. San Juan 7.7 (26') - 192. San Juan 28 - 180. This indicates it's no rocket - an SJ24 would have to give you 21 seconds a mile - a pretty big gap, especially for a smaller boat. The 7.7 is also 26' but is rated nearly a minute a mile faster. Some other boats and their ratings for comparison; Bayfield 32C - 240.
The 26 was a shoal keel/centerboard boat which was an attempt to tap into the large trailerable cruiser market. It did have a deep keel option, thoug few were made. With its shallow draft and easy launch capability, it was targeted toward an East Coast audience. For racing, the San Juan 26 has a PHRF rating of 246, which is not much faster than ...

Balboa 26 Similar speed to the Catalina but swing keeled easier to launch and ready to sail. $6000. Ranger 23 two available at around $3500 one without trailer and one without spinnaker or elect system. I am surprised at the number of boats available almost $1000 miles from the coast.
Hi, There's a San Juan 26 footer for sale in my local area. It's different than the 28 in that I gather it's not as good of a performer but I can't find much info on the internet about this model except that that 28 was designed because the 26 was a bit of a disappointment. If there are any SJ 26 owners out there that can give me their opinions about this model of boat, I'd appreciate it!

The boat was built in the early 70s. Over 1,000 hulls were made and the design appears more oriented toward the racer. With a 5'8" beam and 133 sq.ft. sails (including a loose-footed mainsail) the C-Lark promised excitement, stabilized by a swinging centerboard drawing 4'9" in fully extended position.
