The 88-foot motor yacht Freedom , being built for fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, is proceeding on schedule, according to superyacht builder CCN . Freedom is part of the Italian yard’s “Fuoriserie” line, one-off custom projects built for clients who want to break boundaries in yacht design.

Cavalli has owned several yachts named Freedom , but this promises to be the most innovative of the bunch. Taking a lead role in the design, Cavalli collaborated with yacht designer and friend Tommaso Spadolini , who has created more than 120 yachts. The two designers gave Freedom a unique, almost mysterious, stealthy look with many practical features.

Cavalli wanted a striking exterior for his yacht that reflects his personality. The yacht’s twin arches extending aft over the large cockpit are certainly a design statement, but they also have the practical effect of enhancing onboard privacy, a priority high on Cavalli’s list. There is also an enclosed glass area in the cockpit so Cavalli can enjoy the outdoors on a rainy or windy day, in a climate-controlled room. A second open area on the flybridge invites social gatherings. The foredeck also has several large sunbeds.

The full-beam master suite is located just behind the forward helm station, making full use of the yacht at its widest point. The saloon has a large skylight to enhance natural light across the main deck. On the lower deck are two guest staterooms and a large crew quarters. The flybridge has its own interior pilothouse so Freedom ’s captain can remain focused on navigation while the guests socialize in the saloon or outer cockpit. Freedom not only looks fast, but the yacht will be—reaching 40 knots. It is powered by three engines connected to water jets to maximize speed. The yacht’s tender will be located forward. Freedom is expected to be launched on schedule in early 2018.

In memoriam: inside the boats owned and designed by Roberto Cavalli

Legendary Italian designer Roberto Cavalli passed away on 12 April, 2024. While Cavalli is best known for his innovations in the fashion world, including sand-blasted jeans, patented leather and animal prints, he was also an owner and designer of several yachts. In this tribute, BOAT takes a look at all the superyachts that bear Cavalli's inventive signature...

Builder : Oceanfast Length : 49.8m

Theo Angelopoulos had one goal in mind when he commissioned Thunder in 1995. The Greek shipping magnate wanted to be able to have breakfast in Saint-Tropez, lunch in Monaco and dinner in Portofino. The result? One of the largest and fastest dayboats the world has ever seen. 

She was designed inside and out by Jon Bannenberg , but Robert Cavalli was brought in under the new ownership of Ukranian businessman Boris Kogan. A €9 million refit followed, which saw the interiors transform into a kaleidoscopic vision of oblong shapes, funhouse mirrors and undulating furniture pieces. The hefty price tag excluded the exterior paint job, however, which was a clear coat mixed with "fingernail-sized" flakes of gold. 

Builder : Baglietto Length : 40.8m

Delivered in 2004, Aquila was first named RC , after her owner and designer, Roberto Cavalli. "This was really my boat to go to Cannes during the Cannes Film Festival. We had so many parties. My god, so many people," Cavalli told BOAT International in an exclusive interview . " A particularly memorable Cannes party in 2014 saw Heidi Klum, Kylie Minogue, Rosario Dawson and Sharon Stone attend, many of whom wore Cavalli-designed party dresses.

Tommaso Spadolini was responsible for Aquila 's imposing, muscular exterior, which featured a wide body seldom seen before – the superstructure stretches across the full beam – but widely reproduced since. Crowd-pleasing features include a dedicated cinema room, a full-beam main saloon and fixed foredeck sunpads for sunbathing while underway. Accommodation is for up to ten guests, including a master cabin on the main deck.

Another boat owned by Roberto Cavalli, the brief for Freedom was succinct – he wanted "wow", he wanted speed and he wanted privacy. In other words, he envisioned "a boat Batman would want to have". The superyacht's straight lines and jet black exterior were partially inspired by his supercharged two-metre Novamarine  RIB, which he often used on  holidays.  Delivered in 2018, Freedom marked another design collaboration with Spadolini – though the superyacht was around half the size of Aquila and designed for quieter family time.

Freedom's interiors are as characterful as you'd expect. The cabins and saloons are furnished in the designer's signature animal print; the galley has cloud wallpaper and is bigger than the owner's cabin (Cavalli loved to cook); the en suite bathroom is painted a very particular shade of green. Photography was a passion of his and so a selection of photos, taken by the designer himself, cover the superyacht's bulkheads and ceiling.

Cerri Cantieri Navali is an Italian luxury shipyard company known for commissioning some of the most exclusive yachts in the world. In 2017, CCN announced that its 28-meter superyacht was sold, but the details were kept under wraps until it was completed in 2019. As mentioned by Boat International , Roberto Cavalli gave a first glimpse at his yacht at the 2019 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards designed by Tommaso Spadolini. Inspired by Batman, the Freedom Superyacht comes with aggressive lines, spacious rooms, and refreshing architecture, standing true to its name.

While standing on the bow, it is clearly understood that the boat has a unique design with an upward slope. Despite its limited length, Freedom is low on the water and offers more volume than expected. The bow offers a large garage to store 3.8 meters of tender . With a lower deck and main deck, each floor is divided into various areas of function. The Bridge on the main deck has the wheelhouse of the yacht that can be directly accessed from the Master Cabin, allowing Cavalli to drive the boat when he wants, as noted by Auto Evolution . With 160-degree visibility, it offers stunning sea views and direct access to the crew quarters.

Roberto Cavalli is known for his love of animal prints, most notably leopard and zebra, and Spadolini incorporated those elements while designing the Master Cabin. The room has access to a small flybridge deck and the lounge area. The interior showcases his bold personality through the prints, and parts of the room come with green walls. One of the cabins in the superyacht is designed all black, inspired by the Dark Avenger. The lower deck features a VIP cabin, two guest cabins, and one twin cabin.

As mentioned by Maxim , Freedom has two kitchens, one indoor and the other one located outdoors, and features leopard-printed seating areas. The unusual galley of the boat sees the kitchen on the lower deck as Cavalli loves to cook and needs larger space. The galley is bigger than his bedroom. The interior has printed sky decor around the open space. The outdoor dining space has a sliding glass door that offers a direct sea view. Designed in white, the couch comes with another set of leopard-printed pillows.

While the initial designs of Freedom showcase expansive lines and structures, it took many iterations to achieve the final result of the sleek yacht. Not only is the superyacht designed to perfection, but due to its compact size, it is fast. Robb Report states that Freedom is powered by three strong engines connected to the water jet that reach a maximum speed of 40 knots. The life at sea for Cavalli is showcased in every aspect of the design of the superyacht through sea, sky, and clouds as motifs for the standard room designs.

An ambitious project by CCN, the superyacht surpassed expectations after showcasing the final result to people worldwide. The unique design of Freedom propelled it to win the Best General Arrangement and Best Exterior Styling Awards at the 2019 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards. Inside and out, the superyacht is a stunning design of innovation that viewers and critics appreciate. Additionally, Freedom is the ideal superyacht for Cavalli to throw his legendary and unforgettable parties in port or out in the sea.

Robert Cavalli actively helped design Freedom, a superyacht he believes depicts the personality of Batman. Freedom, we show you the details of roberto cavalli’s radical yacht.

The new 28-meter yacht by Cerri Cantieri navali unleashes every bit of the personality of the Italian designer. Freedom is a true custom yacht, with interiors and exteriors designed and made to measure and a super-performing hull as desired by the owner.

CCN’s ( Cerri Cantieri Navali ) Freedom is the third unit of their Fuoriserie collection: 100% custom made yachts made to measure for the demanding owners.

The design of Freedom is by Tommaso Spadolini , who developed her along with Roberto Cavalli himself like they did for the previous yacht “RC”.

We are used to Cavalli’s eccentric style, on and off the catwalks. RC was a perfect example: 42 meters painted with an iridescent livery whose color changes according to the direction of the sun rays. A yacht also famous for the lascivous parties , enjoyed by celebrities, which took place on board in the most exclusive places.

This time he wanted a “small” yacht: only 28 meters . It is not made for parties, but for the relaxed holidays of a couple . As radical as Roberto Cavalli is, he initially wanted Freedom to have just one cabin . Then he decided to have a second one for the guests (in addition to the crew space). Let’s discover this unique boat then…

Outside the look is total black . Refined yet aggressive, it is inspired partly by classic motorboats and partly by Batman-like crafts. At the stern, two arches connect the fly and the main deck, as well as framing the cockpit, and become a visual element that characterizes the yacht.

The cockpit is extremely low on water. It is how Roberto Cavalli wanted it. It becomes one with the living area, which features three glazed and fully opening sides. But once closed, the room turns into a comfy and protected space with air conditioning.

Roberto Cavalli loves piloting and he loves speed (he often takes the helm himself). Along with the for a close contact with the sea, he also wanted a very performing means.

The sunbathing area with a sofa for two hides the garage for the tender: the three jets left no space fo an aft garage. The tender is 4 meters long.

Freedom’s internal layout is definitely unusual. They clearly state how the boat is a 100% one-off. The focal point of the yacht is the full-beam master cabin on the main deck .

Freedom’s master cabin is like a control room : from here you can directly access both the living-cockpit area and the staircase leading to the flybridge . Through the bow door, on the other hand, a few steps lead to the wheelhouse , which is also connected to the crew quarters.

The galley on the lower deck is huge: there’s an informal corner for the owner’s breakfasts and snacks, but much more. Roberto Cavalli loves to cook and he definitely doesn’t want to feel tight.

Throughout the boat there’s a series of backlit panels with blow-up photos from all over the world. They are shots made by Cavalli, who has traveled the world far and wide.

The decor is all by Roberto Cavalli, who has selected fabrics and finishes , as well as furniture and accessories . His signature is unmistakable: statues, golden details and animalier patterns.

Tommaso Spadolini celebrates 40 years of success in yacht design

Freedom: Roberto Cavalli's High-speed Custom Yacht

A leader in style and sophistication, fashion designer Roberto Cavalli is a pioneer of the 'classic'. Stepping into the world of yachting, Cavalli has now designed and commissioned his own 27-metre project dubbed 'Freedom'. We take a closer look at how his view of lifestyle has made its way to the water.

Drawn in cooperation with designer and friend Tommaso Spadolini, Freedom is under construction at the CCN shipyard in Carrara with a launch schedule of summer 2018.

Truly something a little different, the fast, sleek and stylish motor yacht is expected to reach speeds of up to 40 knots thanks to three water-jet engines; adding fuel to the fire of her sport exterior design.

Freedom reflects the personality of the Owner, according to the shipyard, who set out to design a yacht to get closer to the sea while also ensuring the utmost privacy.

On board, the master cabin - located behind the bridge - will extend across the entire main deck. A central sky-light will let in plenty of natural light, while, aft, the large cockpit fitted with concealing curtains will allow unbroken views of the ocean.

The lower deck will feature 2 guest cabins and comfortable crew quarters, and the fly will include a private area with pilot seat and personal tender located forward.

Following the delivery of superyacht Elsea , due for debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show in a few weeks time, The Fuoriserie line has marked CCN’s debut in the world of one-off projects and an exciting new entry to the global superyacht fleet.

The 28m motor yacht FREEDOM is a “boat that a Batman would drive” designed by Tomasso Spadolini and Roberto Cavalli.

The fantastic duet Spadolini and Cavalli previously worked on the 41m Baglietto motor yacht RC that belongs to Cavalli. While RC served as a corporate vessel for VIP meetings and vacations, the idea for a new yacht was to design a perfect fast boat of a smaller size with a masculine design that Cavalli could drive himself.

One of the owner’s requirements was to place the master suite on the raised level behind the pilothouse with unobstructed sea views and natural ventilation. The split-level layout places the main salon on the main deck aft and the owner’s suite four steps up on the same level as the pilothouse. A VIP suite and a guest cabin, as well as galley and crew accommodation, are located on the lower deck. The upper deck lounge is accessible from the owner’s suite. FREEDOM can carry a 3.8m tender on the foredeck under a carbon fibre hood. The aft deck cockpit is much lower than usual, which offers a continuous outside space with sliding doors on three sides for close to the water experience.

The interior was designed by Roberto Cavalli himself, who placed emphasis on ample spaces, easy staircases, natural light and ventilation and fantastic sea views. The decor is characterised as “eclectic” and boasts African safari theme fabrics and panoramic photos taken by Cavalli during his travels.

This metallic black hull and metallic dark grey superstructure yacht was built by Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN) with the project delivery of 14 months.

"Freedom" : Transformer yacht for fashion designer Roberto Cavalli

Few owners downsize in the course of their yachting life. For Roberto Cavalli, downsizing seems almost absurd. However, as the Florentine fashion czar with a penchant for extravagance wanted to be behind the wheel himself more often and only has a pleasure craft licence, his new yacht had to be less than 24 metres long. The hull of "Freedom" actually measures 28 metres, but the removable bow and stern sections mean that it falls under the CE limit.

Cavalli had a clear idea of the exterior. "Roberto wanted something sporty and aggressive that reflected his attitude to life at sea and his strong personality. He wanted a boat that Batman would drive!" recalls Tommaso Spadolini of the first iteration in 2016. The two friends had already developed the predecessor yacht "RC". Cavalli used the 41-metre-long Baglietto with a purple metallic hull as a business yacht on which he invited customers and partners to promote his brand. "This time he wanted a yacht purely for private use with his partner, two crew members and up to four guests. Not forgetting his two dogs, Lupo and Lapo!" says Spadolini. The yacht designer, who is also based in Florence, worked on the exterior together with Cavalli and advised him on the interior design. "I'm a creative person, so I wanted to do the interior design myself, which meant choosing all the materials, decors and accessories. Tommaso supported me along the way to ensure that the furniture I chose fitted properly into the available space," says Cavalli, describing the creative and collaborative way of working. Even if the brand that bears his name is now taking a somewhat more moderate course in terms of fashion, the leopard prints are still a must. The 78-year-old last sold his company, which has been in the red since 2013, to an Italian investment company in 2015.

In his private life, Cavalli, who describes his own style as eclectic, still likes it flamboyant. In the owner's area, golden snake handles hang in front of fronts with a crocodile structure, the eagle sculptures on the sideboards in the lounge also shine in gold, and the obligatory feline predator décor crops up again and again, even in a highly desaturated version on the wall panels. A wide variety of African animal skin prints can be found on the upholstery, cushion covers and bedspreads.

The curved "RC" letters of the brand logo are the first to be crossed by those who board via the stern. However, the fashion designer also provided more moderate impulses, such as the prints of his own photographs applied to the bulkheads. They are all travel shots by a passionate photographer.

The owner looks out over the New York skyline from his bed, above which a round skylight made of frosted glass provides natural light. Behind it hangs - completely uncovered - a projector that projects onto a retractable screen. Four steps lead up from the aft main deck to his 22 square metre quarters. The reason for this is a key specification requirement: the owner's cabin should be located on the main deck and offer exclusive access to both the helm station and the flybridge. If the door to the aft deck lounge is closed, the sundeck becomes a private owner's terrace. "This is a first on a yacht of this size - with all-round sea views and natural air circulation," says Spadolini, emphasising the advantages of the split-level layout.

Close to the sea due to low bulwark

At the same time, it was important to Cavalli that the lounge on the aft deck was just above the surface of the water to maximise the proximity to the sea and was surrounded by a low bulwark and three large doors. "This gave rise to the design challenge of reducing the ceiling height of the engine room," says Spadolini, explaining the specifications he gave Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN) for the construction of the aluminium structure. The shipyard from Carrara in Tuscany only had fourteen months from placing the order to delivery. "Although we approached several shipyards, CCN was the only one willing to accept the tight schedule. Due to its proximity to Florence, Roberto was able to visit the shipyard frequently and accompany the construction," says Spadolini.

In the eight metre long engine compartment, three MAN diesels produce a total of 4191 kilowatts. The twelve cylinders are coupled to two Kamewa jets, which frame a booster. The water jet propulsion is based on another requirement for "Freedom": that she has to run at 40 knots. "During the seatrials, we managed 46 knots with nine tonnes of fuel and no furniture, now it's 42 knots," explains the captain, who has been sailing on jet-powered yachts for almost his entire life.

The ceiling height rises in front of the lowered engine compartment, and a door leads to the galley, which, together with the dinette, extends over the entire width of seven metres. The owner and crew share the 4.30 metres of worktop. Cavalli's requirement was a kitchen like on land. Guests who have to make their way from the main deck via the central staircase through the galley or from the steering position via the companionway also feel at home. They then enter the eighty centimetre wide corridor, from which they turn off to port into a double cabin with bunk beds and to starboard into a twelve square metre suite. The retreats for the crew of two are located in the foredeck and consist of a cabin for the captain and a double cabin, which, however, is only occupied by a stewardess. If you take the stairs up from here, you reach the helm station with captain's chairs for the owner and captain, from which there are exits to the side decks.

The superhero yacht from Cavalli

The gap in the storage space left by the lowered aft deck is closed by a carbon canopy on the foredeck, whose sixteen square metres of teak become a sunbathing area. Is this where the Batman magic is hidden? Not quite, the 3.45 metre long tender is a standard model, as is the crane. There is also storage space for loose furniture under the canopy.

But this is precisely part of the special equipment that undoubtedly belongs to a superhero vehicle, like the visually striking features that distinguish the saviour of mankind as such from a distance. One such feature on "Freedom" is the aft arch of the superstructure, the Spadolini arch. "The round curve protects the rear cockpit from the wind," says the master craftsman, adding: "To emphasise the sporty nature of the yacht, we had the hull painted in metallic black and the superstructure in dark grey metallic."

After the first test runs, Roberto Cavalli was delighted with his 28-metre fun yacht: "I'm over the moon with the end result and want to spend as much time on board as possible. This year, I plan to live on board almost continuously until September!" If that doesn't sound like the ultimate dolce vita plan for a private owner.
