The History of Holland Jachtbouw and Yachting

In the early 1990s, Holland Jachtbouw opened its doors. Utilizing traditional methods based around the shipbuilding heritage of the area of Zaandam, the shipyard began producing Dutch lemsteanken (flat-bottom boats). However, Holland Jachtbouw began producing boats that enticed the luxury yachting market — the first of these was the 16.5-meter VLIEGENT HEART, which was conceived by Hoek Design, a superyacht design firm. From there Holland Jachtbouw expanded its repertoire, building everything from luxury motor yachts to classic J-Class sailing yachts and beyond.

Reinforced Plastics

Composite Applications

Carbon composite materials in modern yacht building.

A catamaran built almost entirely from lightweight, high strength carbon fibres is set to circumnavigate the globe using solar power alone. Jürgen Klimke, Sales Director Europe, and Daniel Rothmann, Manager Technical Sales, SGL Technologies GmbH, discuss the PlanetSolar project.

The TÛRANOR PlanetSolar catamaran will set off on its voyage around the world early next year. (Pictures courtesy of Sascha Klahn/Knierim-Yachtbau.de.)

Many spectacular attempts have been made to circumnavigate the globe. Whether by land, sea or air, as soon as the technical opportunities were created, projects sprang up to realise this dream in the most unique way possible. Given the international fame and recognition that attend the achievement of such an ambitious goal, there will probably always be new projects that will fill observers with amazement.

But a project that is certainly unique in the history of such adventures is the circumnavigation of the globe with a catamaran made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and equipped with the latest photovoltaic technology. Powered entirely by solar energy, the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar is due to set off on its voyage around the world early in 2011.

Raphael Domjan from Switzerland and Gérard d’Aboville from France will be on board the Tûranor PlanetSolar to navigate the 31 m long, 15 m wide craft across the world’s oceans. The adventurer d’Aboville was the first man to row across the Atlantic in 1980, and later, the Pacific.

Minimising weight

The catamaran is fitted with more than 500 m 2 of solar modules. The photovoltaic cells mounted on the deck and on flaps at the stern and sides give the craft its characteristic appearance. But one of the biggest challenges has been to store enough solar energy so that the vessel can maintain its progress even in darkness. To achieve this, use has been made of the latest lithium-ion batteries, which weigh around 11 tonnes in total. The batteries are housed in the left and right floats – the two hulls that run the full length of the boat.

To minimise consumption of precious energy as the craft cruises along, it was necessary to save as much weight as possible in the boat structures by employing modern lightweight construction technology. Through the use of carbon fibre composite in the hull structure, the requirements for excellent mechanical properties combined with very low weight were successfully met.

The four electric motors are driven by a massive power supply and provide a maximum output of 120 kW. The catamaran is moved and steered by two large propellers, which are also produced from carbon fibre materials and fitted on the end of each float. The propellers can be independently controlled to steer the craft on the desired course. The maximum speed is approximately 14 knots.

PlanetSolar‘s virtually silent and pollution-free circumnavigation of the globe is scheduled to take about 160 days. Several stops along the equator are planned to give a wider international audience the opportunity to learn more about this unique project.

The giant catamaran is currently being finished in the Knierim Yachtbau shipyard at Kiel in northern Germany, and initial tests have already been successfully completed following the christening and launch of the vessel on 31 March 2010. But before it can set off on its voyage around the world in early 2011, a considerable amount of detailed work and trials have still to be carried out to guarantee the success of the project.

Composite construction

Knierim Yachtbau is an established company that specialises in building individual high-tech yachts. It has already made a name for itself in a wide variety of projects as one of the leading manufacturers of innovative yachts constructed with composite materials. For example, Knierim Yachtbau successfully implemented projects such as the ‘UCA,‘ one of the largest German ocean racing yachts, and the ‘Container‘ in 2008. The first German America’s cup yacht, ‘Germany 1,‘ also came from the Kiel shipyard. Knierim Yachtbau recently introduced a new 10 m long, thoroughbred racing yacht with a fast, ultra-modern hull shape, which is set to create quite a stir. Here again, it used the favourable properties of carbon fibre composites in the construction of the hull, as did the mast maker for the mast.

The Kiel shipyard has over 40 years’ boat building experience and has developed great expertise in the use of composites, and carbon fibre materials in particular. So it is not surprising that, in planning the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar, it was decided to use carbon fibre again.

The catamaran had to be lightweight and yet at the same time extremely stable in construction to meet the exacting demands of the open sea. After several proposals, ranging from a single-hull boat to a trimaran, the company finally opted for a double-hull design by Craig Loomes, director of the LOMOcean company in New Zealand. The design of the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar catamaran is based on the so-called ‘wave piercer’ principle. This means that the two catamaran hulls are designed to slice through the waves in rough seas, so helping the craft adopt a stable, solid position in the water.

The high stresses expected in foul weather conditions during the voyage made it necessary to use high strength carbon fibre for the hulls. Steffen Müller, one of the two managing directors of Knierim Yachtbau, points out that the stresses under storm conditions should not be underestimated, since in very high seas, the central hull will also thrust through the waves.

In the production of the hull in Kiel, most of the work was carried out using the hand lay-up process with vacuum compression, which made it possible to ensure an optimum fibre volume content. The moulds for the hull were produced by Knierim Yachtbau itself, which has its own CNC 5-axis milling machine to make the master patterns and the moulds.

The Knierim shipyard‘s Tooling division also designs and produces moulds for the wind power industry, e.g. for rotor blades, and for automotive components. The moulds for the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar are based on a steel bottom frame and a Styropor block, which was machined to the correct contours using the CNC milling machine. Coated with high quality epoxy pastes the moulds were then shaped to the final contours by repeated finishing to give them a high quality surface. Owing to the immense size of the yacht, the moulds for the hull structure and the deck were each divided into three different sections and then assembled in the production hall to give the complete mould.

Altogether, more than 20 tonnes of carbon fibres, 11 tonnes of foam core and 20 tonnes of epoxy resin and hardener were used in the construction of this boat.

Carbon fibre

Carbon fibre materials were supplied by the SGL Group , headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany. In the construction of the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar, the Knierim shipyard used three different carbon fibre materials from SGL: a unidirectional fabric; a bidirectional fabric with weights of 300-400 g/m 2 ; and a SIGRATEX® woven carbon fabric with similar weights.

In the construction of multilayer fabrics such as bidirectional fabrics, the different layers are applied with the required alignment to one other (e.g. ±45°) and then stitched together fully automatically with polyester thread. This method produces very good cohesion of the individual fibre rovings and allows the fabric to be more easily placed and aligned in the hull mould.

Another advantage of these fabrics is that, unlike in woven fabrics, the fibres are always straight and non-crimped. As a result, the intrinsically very high strength and stiffness values of the carbon fibres are retained and mechanical tensile and compression forces can be optimally absorbed by the composite structure.

In addition to unidirectional and bidirectional fabrics, special structures with three or four layers can be tailored to meet particular load-bearing requirements.

By using these multilayer fabrics, it is possible to reduce the work involved with placing the material in the mould. Instead, only one complete fabric consisting of different individual layers with different fabric weights needs to be placed. This represents a saving in production time and costs for the user. In hand lay-up with vacuum compression or vacuum infusion, these fabric designs allow good impregnation of the individual rovings and so result in high component quality.

In the production of these fabrics, SGL uses mainly the SIGRAFIL® C carbon fibres manufactured in its plants in Scotland and the USA. At present, two different types are produced at SGL, a 50K heavy tow carbon fibre and a 24K carbon fibre. The standard feedstock used for these fibres is polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is based on a highly polymeric organic substance with a high carbon content. Through the successive processing steps of oxidation and carbonisation carried out at carefully controlled temperatures, the basis of the subsequent carbon fibres is created. These processing steps are followed by surface treatment to apply different sizings such as polyurethane or epoxy. In the case of the TÛRANOR PlantSolar project, the carbon fibres used were those with an epoxy sizing.

Before the different woven and multiaxial fabrics were used in the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar yacht, they first had to be certified to the special marine requirements of Germanischer Lloyd (GL), together with the SGL SIGRAFIL C carbon fibre.

Unique project

The TÛRANOR PlanetSolar yacht is an excellent example of the opportunities opened up by using modern carbon fibre materials. Built with high-performance materials and equipped with the latest technology, the carbon catamaran fulfills all the requirements of a unique and prestigious project. As in other industries where eco-friendly drive concepts are required for the future, this yacht represents a milestone in international yacht building thanks to its lightweight construction and photovoltaic technology.

It will take an estimated 68 000 man hours before the 85 tonne craft is completely finished. The great moment will come in spring 2011, when the yacht will set off on its voyage around the world. The plan is to start in the Mediterranean and then circumnavigate the globe in a westerly direction. Points of call on this adventure will include cities such as New York, San Francisco, Singapore and Dubai. We look forward to following the progress of this adventure and hope for a successful and safe voyage around the world.

A German shipyard for luxury carbon sailing yachts

A modern location.

The YYachts shipyard is located on the Baltic Sea, almost directly on the water. Here we can manufacture yachts up to 35 metres in length. The shipyard is equipped with modern and technologically advanced systems to guarantee efficiency and precision in production. At the same time, the structure is simple and straightforward to live up to the YYachts philosophy of "Keep it simple".

A clear vision

Our goal is to build sailing yachts that give you time for yourself as well as freedom and fun with your family and friends - a reliable investment in a better quality of life. We will treat you with the honesty and authenticity with which we produce our yachts. Our passion is to build sustainable sailing yachts that are ahead of their time, yet easy to sail and maintain.

A strict philosophy

There is a quote attributed to several famous thinkers: "I'm writing you a long letter because I didn't have time for a short one."  Applied to our business, this means: you have to be able to operate a yacht intuitively and without much effort - which is why a great many details and processes in its handling have to be rethought and simplified.

A perfect look

YYachts works with only the best designers, engineers and builders in the world to develop award-winning yachts. Already in the early stages, YYachts cooperated with such famous designers as Sir David Chipperfield, himself a sailor and one of the most important architects of our time. He and Luca Brenta already fixed the extremely high design standards of YYachts in the first Y8.

A strong team

Our team has many hundreds of years of combined experience in building yachts; and everyone is still as passionate about it as on the first day of work. The common credo of our highly motivated crew is simple: Only yachts leave the shipyard with which we would also sail around the world ourselves. Experience in building fast luxury sailing yachts is essential for us. And an enormous security for you.

Will Bubba Pollard Win the ARCA East Race at Five Flags?

The 38th season of the ARCA Menards East Series will begin on Saturday, March 23 at Five Flags Speedway. The 0.5-mile short track, famous for hosting the Snowball Derby in December, will host the East field for the seventh time.

The 18 drivers entered for the 150-lap race are the most entered at Five Flags since the 2020 edition. Of those 18, one driver stands out for his short track prowess.

Yep, Bubba Pollard will pilot the No. 1 Chevrolet for longtime team owner James Finch. Short track fans know Pollard for his successes, which most recently included his victory in the 2024 Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway. The Pensacola 150 will be Pollard’s East series debut; he already has five starts in the ARCA Menards Series.

Pollard has won at numerous racetracks; can he win the East race?

“Yes, I promise you he’ll be a contender in all three of them,” Five Flags track co-owner and general manager Tim Bryant told Frontstretch .

While Pollard has never won the Derby, coming oh-so-close in 2023, he’s still been successful at the track. He is a multi-time Blizzard Series champion, a super late model four-race series leading into the Snowball Derby. He has won over 30 races at Five Flags too.

Bryant wouldn’t name Pollard the favorite to win the East race though. Instead, Bryant said two others are the top two to be reckoned with on Saturday night.

“ Gio Ruggiero , certainly, is a contender no matter what he drives,” Bryant said. “And of course, he’s going to be in a Venturini Motorsports car here so we know he’ll be a contender. But I fully believe the favorite for the ARCA race is William Sawalich . He is coming off an ARCA win at Phoenix Raceway and he’s driving a Joe Gibbs Racing entry, so he’s going to be the guy with a target on his back.”

Sawalich is the defending East winner at Five Flags , his first victory en route to the 2023 series championship. He outdueled Ruggiero at Phoenix too; they finished 1-2, respectively. Ruggiero also finished third in the 2023 Snowball Derby.

Ruggiero will challenge Sawalich for the 2024 East crown, and Ruggiero has been successful in late models too. Among his achievements is the victory in the 2023 Winchester 400, another historic short track race.

Ruggiero is piloting the No. 20 for VMS, the entry that finished third in the ’23 Five Flags East event. Who drove it that day? The son of Pollard’s team owner, Jake Finch , who will drive the No. 55 VMS Toyota. Bryant is confident Finch will be one of the contenders on Saturday night.

“He won a championship here in our Outlaw division before he moved to the late model ranks,” Bryant added. “He’s going to be doing double duty as is Bubba, running both the ARCA East race, where Finch finished third last year, and then the super late model race on Sunday.”

In the ’23 East race at Five Flags, Luke Fenhaus gave Pinnacle Racing Group a runner-up finish in the team’s debut. This year, Connor Zilisch is driving the No. 28 Chevrolet full time in the East . Zilisch boasts an impressive resume too.

In 2024 alone, Zilisch won the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring. Zilisch will have a busy day on Saturday; he’s making his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Circuit of the Americas. He’ll miss practice and qualifying at Five Flags, but his No. 28 will be in familiar hands.

With @ConnorZilisch making his Truck debut at COTA on Saturday, @luke_fenhaus confirmed to @Frontstretch that he will practice & qualify the No. 28 Chevrolet for @RacePRG at @5FlagsSpeedway . Zilisch will then drive the racecar in the #ARCAEast race. — Mark Kristl (@MarkKristl) March 20, 2024

“I’ve done a bunch of preparation to be ready for both races,” Zilisch told ARCA Racing . “I’m ready to make the most of the opportunity with the ARCA car and the truck. Pensacola is going to be the biggest thing, as I’m showing up to the track without practice or qualifying and with no experience in an ARCA car on an oval. There’s going to be a lot of new stuff for me, but I’m doing everything I can to be ready for it.”

In addition to those four drivers, Bryant noted two others who will be fast on Saturday: Hunter Wright and Tyler Scofield . Wright will make his series debut in the No. 95 MAN Motorsports Toyota. Wright won the 2024 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing Pro Late Model championship at fellow Florida short track New Smyrna Speedway.

“Hunter has yet to find victory lane here at Pensacola, but he’s been a contender, mostly in the pro late model ranks with a few spot visits in the super late models,” Bryant said. “Always runs really well. So, this is his maiden voyage into the ARCA East series here and at least this is a track he is familiar with, so I’m anticipating a good run by Hunter.”

Scofield is making his series debut; his father Jeff Scofield debuted in the national series season opener at Daytona International Speedway, but got caught up in an early race wreck, leaving him with a 36th-place DNF.

“Tyler has not raced here at Five Flags,” Bryant said. “His dad Jeff has raced here and is a great racer to this day. They’re central Florida guys and they certainly know how to get the job done, that’s for sure.”

The Snowball Derby has a mix of NASCAR drivers, such as 2023 victor Ty Majeski , ARCA drivers such as Ruggiero and late model talents such as Pollard.

“We love seeing our young drivers who come through who are on a journey to get to the higher levels,” Bryant said. “And certainly, we’re seeing that with guys coming from late models into the ARCA East series. At the same time, we cherish our veterans who are just short track fans. This weekend we certainly have a good mixture of both and that’s the way we like it.”

On Sunday, the day after the East race, the ASA Stars National Tour will contest the second event of its season at Five Flags. Ruggiero and Finch are both pulling double duty. Pollard will run a tripleheader this weekend. He’s racing in the Crown Stock race, which precedes the East race, as well as the East and ASA races.

If Pollard sweeps the weekend , he’ll win $5,000 and one fan will win $1,000.

“Certainly, he can drive anything and do well,” Bryant said. “I think he’s going to be a contender.”

In the six East races and the six national races in Pensacola, only twice has the winner started outside the top five; all victors have started inside the top 10. Experience at the racetrack is not a prerequisite for victory according to Bryant, but it is always beneficial.

“Experience on any track certainly is an advantage for a driver,” Bryant said. “He is more familiar with the track and characteristics of it. People will tell you Five Flags is a little on the fickle side. Even Bubba, who probably has more laps here than anyone who will be in the race.

“The track changes frequently. With the weather, and I don’t know the reasons why, if we’re built on an Indian burial ground or whatever, but the racetrack does have some characteristics that are different. From that standpoint, I don’t know that is that big of an advantage for a guy who’s raced here vs. a guy who hasn’t.”

My prediction: Pollard wins the Pensacola 150 on Saturday night.

You can watch the race live on Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET on FloRacing.

Former known as: Athos of London

At 62 metres in length, Athos (formerly Athos of London ) is world’s largest and most luxurious privately-owned two-masted schooner. One top of that, she is one of the most innovative sailing yachts built since her launch in 2010. Her proud owner has spared no expense to build his dream, providing her with her opulent luxury and technological delights.

The dining table at the starboard side of the deckhouse accommodates twelve guests. On portside of the deckhouse is a cozy seating area with a coffee table as the main centerpiece. The bar is equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator and ice maker.

Athos’ interior is at least as impressive as her exterior. Below deck she has all possible comforts, such as climate control, a Kaleidescape on-demand audio and video server in all guest cabins and the main saloon, a WiFi network with VSAT broadband and Satellite TV/DVD/CD/Radio/MP3 in all cabins.

The classic, timeless styling, beautiful details and grand furniture create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere on board Athos . Her layout consists of the saloon, galley, the main deck cabin with navigation area, four guest cabins and a master cabin. The engine compartment can be reached directly from the control room. Athos accommodates up to twelve guests and ten crew members to help the guests achieve a relaxed and luxurious sailing experience. To contribute to that experience, she has a wellness area with massage table on board, as well as a cinema with projector and Dolby surround system. The crew members have access to a walk-in fridge and laundry area.

All guest cabins have finishing in a different type of wood, which creates a unique ambiance in every cabin. The matching upholstery has been carefully picked. The two aft cabins (which can be transformed from twin to double beds) have aniegré and maple wood finishing. The two front guest rooms are finished in cherry and pear wood and are both equipped with a double bed and a Pullman. These cabins are also equipped with a couch and a pull-out desk. All guest cabins have adjoining en suite bathrooms.

The master cabin is finished with mahogany and has a kingsize bed, desk, daybed and a couch. The bathroom has a bath, shower/steamroom and his & hers sinks. Adjacent to the master cabin is the private aft deckhouse which is furnished with a secluded sitting area and daybed, as well as a private office. Next to the aft deckhouse is an owners’ cockpit with adjustable table.

The galley and pantry are fully equipped with Miele appliances, including a gimbal oven and hob, steam oven, combi microwave grill/oven, plate and cup warming drawers, an espresso machine, two dishwashers and various other mobile appliances. Everything to ensure the highest culinary standards.

Opposite the galley, is the imposing main salon, including a sitting area by the fireplace and a large ottoman with extendable footrests in the middle.

Designer Andre Hoek from Hoek Design Naval Architects, Holland Jachtbouw and a very dedicated owner worked together on this unique project. This collaboration led to the launch of a number of technical innovations, including a unique hydraulic system that spans more than 30 kilometres of wiring and delivers around 450 kW of power.

This superyacht features an impressive 61.4m mainmast, Reckmann furling systems and Doyle sails. The twin Volvo Penta diesel engines deliver a cruising speed of 12 knots with a maximum of 14 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. Furthermore, Athos has dual redundancy for virtually any system, to eliminate single points of failure. She also has a dynamic positioning system, a fully integrated stern anchor, a 5383 aluminium hull and a hydraulically operated centreboard.

Athos is the most technologically advanced classic sailing yacht built to date. She is Bureau Veritas classified and MCA compliant.

Tennessee Titans free agency: Tony Pollard, 3 more player signings announced

pollard yachtbau

The first group of Tennessee Titans free agent signings are now official, with the Titans announcing four players they've acquired in their continued quest to rebuild the roster.

Per a team announcement, the Titans have officially agreed to terms with running back Tony Pollard, center Lloyd Cushenberry, cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and linebacker Kenneth Murray. The team negotiated deals to sign these players during the NFL's initial contact window , which began Monday , but players weren't allowed officially to sign contracts with new teams until 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

Sources with knowledge of the situation tell The Tennessean that the Titans have also agreed to contracts with wide receiver Calvin Ridley, quarterback Mason Rudolph and offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles, but those contracts haven't been announced.

Free agency continues through the offseason. Many stars and potential starters remain unsigned, and the Titans still have among the most salary cap space available in the NFL. Expect the Titans to try to add starters on both sides of the ball, including possible new faces at wide receiver, offensive tackle, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback, safety and kicker as well as a new backup quarterback.

MAKE THE CALL: Here's case Tennessee Titans can be better with Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears than Derrick Henry

All things Titans: Latest Tennessee Titans news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

In addition to their newly signed players, the Titans also announced the re-signings of or reportedly agreed to re-sign kicker Nick Folk, wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, long snapper Morgan Cox and running back Julius Chestnut and extended an exclusive rights free agent tender to linebacker Jack Gibbens.

Learn more about the Titans' free agent signees below.

Running back Tony Pollard

Pollard, 26, spent the p ast five years playing for the Dallas Cowboys . He split carries with Ezekiel Elliott during his first four seasons but took over as the feature back in 2023. He's eclipsed 1,000 yards each of the past two seasons, but his yards per carry and yards per touch marks both fell precipitously in 2023 as his usage went up.

That said, Pollard caught a career-high 55 passes in 2023 and was top 10 in the NFL in rushing yards gained after contact. Pairing Pollard with second-year Titans running back Tyjae Spears gives the Titans a versatile, multi-use tandem who are similar enough that the Titans shouldn't have to change their schemes depending on which running back is on the field.

Pollard played his high school and college football in Memphis.

Center Lloyd Cushenberry

In Cushenberry, 26, the Titans added one of the best young centers in football . Cushenberry excels as a pass protector, having allowed only two sacks in the past two seasons. He isn't as dominant in the run game, but his run blocking grades have been roughly league average over the course of his career.

A former third-round pick out of LSU, Cushenberry was highly regarded as a leader on the Tigers' 2019 national championship team. He was the first offensive lineman in school history to be awarded the No. 18 jersey, an honor given to the player who most exemplifies leadership within LSU's program.

GRADE THE SIGNING: Grading Lloyd Cushenberry: How we feel about Tennessee Titans move to add free agent center

Cushenberry's missed only10 games in four professional seasons, nine of which came after a groin injury in 2022. He's started every NFL game in which he's ever appeared.

Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie

A seven-year veteran who's played for the Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals, Awuzie emerged as one of the NFL's best cornerbacks in 2021-22 in Cincinnati before an ACL injury derailed him and prolonged his comeback into 2023. Awuzie intercepted two passes and broke up 19 in 22 regular season games before his knee injury, allowing quarterbacks to complete only 42% of their passes thrown his way in 2022.

He regressed a little in 2023, with quarterbacks posting a 112.8 passer rating against him compared to 58.2 in 2022 and 80.9 in 2021. He's regarded as a smart, clean coverage corner, though. He uses his length to his 6-foot advantage without getting overly handsy; he's never committed more than five penalties in a season in his career, and hasn't topped four since 2019.

Awuzie overlapped with Titans coach Brian Callahan for three years in Cincinnati.

Linebacker Kenneth Murray

The Los Angeles Chargers picked Murray, 25, in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. One of the most athletic linebackers in the NFL, Murray logged 53 starts and 321 tackles in four years in L.A. He posted career highs in sacks (three) and pass breakups (four) in 2023. But he was also among the 10 worst off-ball linebackers in run defense grade per Pro Football Focus and in passer rating allowed on throws targeted at him in coverage.

The Chargers declined to pick up Murray's fifth-year contract option last offseason. He started 15 games last year despite his pending free agency, logging 107 tackles to match his career high.

Tennessee Titans' free agency losses

Running back Derrick Henry, defensive lineman Denico Autry, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting are among the biggest names the Titans have lost in free agency. Henry is signing with the Baltimore Ravens and Murphy-Bunting with the Arizona Cardinals. Autry and Al-Shaair are both off to play for the Titans' division rivals, the Houston Texans.

Cowboys Visit Purdue RB Pro Day; Tony Pollard Replacement in Draft?

  • Author: Timm Hamm

In this story:

Dallas Cowboys

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have been significantly quiet in free agency so far. As Cowboys fans chew furiously at their fingernails while players leave The Star, it leaves us wondering if owner and general manager Jerry Jones really is "all-in."

One loss that Dallas will have to address either through free agency or next month's draft is running back Tony Pollard. Pollard signed with the Tennessee Titans last week for a reported three years and $24 million.

© Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

Next season will mark the first year since 2016 that the Cowboys will enter the season without either Ezekiel Elliott or Pollard in the backfield.

Elliott , by the way, is still available, but contrary to some reports, CowboysSI.com is reporting that Dallas and Elliott have had no official contact.

If Dallas wants to build through the draft - and that certainly appears to be the plan - one potential name at running back is Purdue's Tyrone Tracy Jr.

The Cowboys sent representatives to Purdue's Pro Day to see the 6-1, 210-pound Tracy back on March 8, so there is at least some passing interest on the part of Dallas.

Tracy is described as an agile ball carrier with a combination of power, speed and vision, with reliable hands. That description may sound familiar, as many of the same things were said about Pollard when he was being scouted at Memphis.

Tracy is 24, for what it's worth, and played six seasons of college football - the first four at Iowa before transferring to Purdue before the 2022 seasons. His yards from scrimmage totals over 61 total collegiate games include 2,148 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Cowboys Offense Takes Losses While Hanging with Kid Rock

Dallas will have several options in the draft, but if history repeats itself, it'll find a back that can run with power and catch passes - as Elliott and Pollard could do.

Tracy could be that guy.

Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, in Nashville, Tenn. (AP Photo/George Walker IV)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are replacing four-time Pro Bowl running back Derrick Henry with Tony Pollard.

Tennessee general manager Ran Carthon started his rebuild Monday on the first day of the NFL’s bargaining period. People familiar with the deals spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because free agents can’t officially sign until Wednesday when the new league year begins.

The first big move came by replacing Henry with Pollard. He and the Titans agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the deal told the AP.

The Titans also worked to shore up their secondary and bulk up the middle of the offensive line.

They agreed with Cincinnati cornerback Chidobe Awuzie on a three-year deal for $36 million with $23 million guaranteed, another person familiar with that contract told AP. Denver center Lloyd Cushenberry agreed to a four-year deal for $50 million with $26 million guaranteed, another person familiar with that deal confirmed to AP.

The Titans drafted running back Tyjae Spears last season , and he was the backup to Henry. The eight-year veteran, who turned 30 in January, is poised to hit free agency Wednesday for the first time in his career.

Pollard , 26, was a fourth-round pick by Dallas in 2019 out of Memphis. He has had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Cowboys using the franchise tag on Pollard for the 2023 season. The Cowboys declined to tag Pollard for a second straight season.

He ran for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns and also had a career-high 55 receptions for 311 yards in 2023. Pollard has 3,621 yards rushing in his career on 762 carries, averaging 4.8 per rush. He also has 176 receptions for 1,319 yards and five TDs.

Henry led the NFL in carries with 280 and trailed only the 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey in yards rushing in 2023.

He’s one of only eight players to run for at least 2,000 yards in a season and is tied for 13th in NFL history with 90 rushing TDs. He leaves short of Eddie George’s franchise rushing mark of 10,009 yards.

Awuzie will reunite with new Titans coach Brian Callahan after spending the past three seasons in Cincinnati when Callahan was the Bengals offensive coordinator. Awuzie, who began his NFL career in Dallas as the 60th pick overall out of Colorado in 2017, has started 74 of 86 games.

He has six career interceptions, four forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Cushenberry will be a big upgrade in size over undrafted free agent Aaron Brewer. He was one of only three Titans to start every game in 2023. Cushenberry was a third-round pick out of LSU in 2020 and started all 57 games he played in Denver.

TERESA M. WALKER

One week into free agency, the Tennessee Titans can be called the anti-Dallas Cowboys

pollard yachtbau

The Tennessee Titans aren't the Dallas Cowboys.

And that's a good thing.

Just ask Tony Pollard . In five seasons in Dallas, he experienced plenty of success. Three playoff berths. Two division titles. Three straight 12-win seasons. Super Bowl expectations every year. Such is the weight of playing for America's Team.

But Pollard says it never felt like his first day at the Titans' facility did .

"Just talking to the coaches, being here, being around, feeling the energy of the new staff and the new guys in the building, it’s not like places where you go and they’ve been there 10, 15 years and it’s kind of like going through the motions," he said Thursday. "You kind of feel the energy. It felt like the place I needed to be."

BETTER WITHOUT THE KING? Here's case Tennessee Titans can be better with Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears than Derrick Henry

So yes, these Titans aren't the Cowboys. There isn't a Jerry Jones-type figure who has lorded over the team for 3½ decades. Nor are there people like Todd Williams and Will McClay who've worked in the personnel department for 20-plus years, or coaches like Mike McCarthy, who has been an NFL head coach since Pollard was in elementary school.

The Titans have a first-year coach in Brian Callahan, a second-year general manager in Ran Carthon, a first-year president of football operations in Chad Brinker, a pair of first-year offensive and defensive coordinators in Nick Holz and Dennard Wilson and a whole bunch of fresh faces around the building.

Now those newbies are collecting even newer newbies. While established teams like the Cowboys have spent the week focused on preserving their roster, the Titans have aggressively sought out free agents to revitalize theirs.

And those free agents are noticing the approach.

"Here, you can tell that it matters that we’re trying to win," cornerback Chidobe Awuzie said. "That shows that the front office and the GM have done a great, amazing job. They’re being intentional. When you see that, the effort put in, I don’t know how a player can’t understand that winning is the goal here. That’s what we’re going to try to do."

"Just being around this morning, you can just feel it from everybody here," linebacker Kenneth Murray added. "It’s definitely a great, great vibe. Everybody’s excited to be here. You get that vibe from everybody. Not just the coaches, but the equipment staff and the medical staff. It’s been amazing. We’re building something here. We’re just getting started."

HAVING FUN: Calvin Ridley doesn't just make Tennessee Titans better. He makes them fun | Estes

The Titans announced the signings of Pollard, Awuzie, Murray and center Lloyd Cushenberry on Thursday. Sources have told The Tennessean they've also agreed to contracts with receiver Calvin Ridley , offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles and quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Some of these are statement signings. NFL.com had Ridley, Cushenberry, Pollard and Awuzie ranked among the 50 best free agents available this cycle. Ridley and Cushenberry ranked as the top players available at their positions. Murray's a former first-round pick coming off the best season of his career and Rudolph has a stellar résumé for a backup quarterback.

One big reason the Titans are able to attract this caliber of free agent is money. They went into the week with more than $75 million in salary cap space, per OverTheCap . The Cowboys, by contrast, went in needing to shed $10 million off the books to be cap compliant. They can't spend money they don't have, no matter how loudly fans clamor for it, leaving teams like the Titans to swoop in and undercut the big boys.

And with that volume of spending comes an opportunity to rebuild. An opportunity to start fresh. The chance to make something entirely new.

"The energy’s amazing," Cushenberry said. "You walk throughout the building and there are a lot of people smiling and ready to get this thing rolling and set this culture for the future."

Murray describes the feeling best.

"I just feel like being here, the energy here has been immaculate," the linebacker said. "I think this place is up-and-coming. I just want to be a part of something special, building something special. And winning some football games."

Virat Kohli needs 6 runs in CSK vs RCB IPL 2024 opener to create T20 history, can go past Warner, Pollard, Hales

I f the Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru IP 2024 opener was being played on a stage instead of the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, there would not have been many takers for the spotlight operator. Who would want to choose between MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli?

Dhoni decided to hand over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad a day before the grand opener of the 17th season and is making a comeback to the cricket field after close to 11 months. Kohli, on the other hand, is going to make his first appearance in a cricket match since the India vs Afghanistan T20I earlier this year.

Let's stay away from that debate and concentrate on Kohli and what he can achieve from the CSK match. For starters, it will be his grand return to cricket after a long break due to the birth of his second child. He skipped the entire five-match Test series against England to spend time with his family. Now he is back and as per Mo Bobat, RCB's Director of Cricket, Kohli is hitting the ball superbly.

"Virat's in a good place. We all know he's an absolute champion cricketer. So he's at a stage of his career, in a stage of his experience now, where most of what he does is pretty hardwired into him. He's coming in fresh, which is what we're excited about," Bobat said at the pre-match press conference.

CSK vs RCB Live Score, IPL 2024

For RCB, it is very important their best batter is in a good headspace. There has been a lot of talk about his place for the T20 World Cup being in doubt. Kohli would like to end those talks once and for all with a powerful performance in this IPL. And What better than starting on the right note against one of the best teams in the tournament?

List of records Virat Kohli can break in CSK vs RCB IPL 2024 match

On Friday, during the match against Chennai, if Kohli scores six runs, he will become the first Indian in history to score 12,000 runs in T20s. As of now, the former Indian skipper, who has played in 376 T20s scored 11,994 runs. He is currently sixth in the list of top run-getters in all T20s behind Chris Gayle , Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales and David Warner. Kohli, however, is the only one who averages over 40.

He will also become the second fastest to 12000 T20 runs after Gayle, who had reached the feat in 353 runs.

The 35-year-old will also get a chance to become the first Indian batter to smash 100 50+ scores in T20s and third overall. Chris Gayle (110) and David Warner (109) stand above him in the list.

Apart from that, Kohli will get a chance to become the second batter to score 1000 runs against the Chennai-based franchise in IPL. Kohli, who has 985 runs to his name in 31 matches, needs to score just 15 runs to achieve the remarkable feat.

Kohli is also the highest run-getter in IPL of all time. In 237 matches and 229 innings, the India talisman batter has scored 7263 runs at an average of 37.24, with a strike rate of 130.02. His best score is 113. He has scored seven centuries, most by a batter and 50 fifties in his IPL career.

Last season, the legendary batter was the fourth-highest run-getter, piling up 639 runs at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82. His best score was 101*. The 35-year-old scored two centuries and six fifties but could not take his side to the playoffs.
