Mini Juno – little sister sailing yacht concept

Dixon yacht design unveils a concept that combines both motoryacht and sailing yacht design….

Dixon Yacht Design has developed a smaller sistership to their 106m sailing yacht Juno concept, called Mini Juno . Constructed in aluminium alloy with composite, it has an LOA of 33m and a gross tonnage of 200gt.

Like its larger sister, Mini Juno presents an alternative to traditional sailing yacht or motoryacht ownership. A single Dyna Rig, by Southern Spars , is operated from the flybridge helm console, minimising the sailing effort. The vessel will sail at 12 knots under canvas alone, wind speed and wind angle dependent.

Mini Juno has accommodation on two decks plus a large open flybridge. The full-width owner’s cabin suite is located in the aft ship with direct access onto the ‘beach’, and three additional guest cabins have been provided with crew accommodation for four in the foreship.

With an inside/outside concept there is a large flexible aft deck for entertaining. An multi-articulating stern platform allows easy access to the water. A William 505 Tender can be stowed within a garage or kept directly on the aft deck, lifted aboard by a sub-deck-mounted crane.

The ship’s engine room is located amidship and is set up with serial or parallel hybrid propulsion to optimise energy use on board. Solar panels have been integrated into the flybridge and the two propellers act as energy-recovery turbines generating electricity while the vessel is sailing.

In Roman mythology, Juno was queen of the gods. In the marine industry, she’s a sailing-yacht concept hoping to be queen of the high seas.

In addition, Juno’s Falcon Rig ensures maximum efficiency with minimal effort. Unlike a conventional rig that requires a full crew, this nifty sailing system can be operated singlehandedly. On top of that, Juno’s advanced hybrid-propulsion system includes propellers that actually generate electricity while the vessel’s sailing.

“This is a future-proof statement yacht, for a customer who is not afraid to do something different,” the studio said in a statement. “It defies sailing convention but not the sailing experience.”

Onboard, meanwhile, eight generous guest cabins are spread across four decks. There is also one “intimate deck” reserved for the owner, which is centered around a full-beam owner’s suite. On the main deck, the sprawling main salon leads outdoors to a beach bar and a 26-foot swimming pool aft.

At the stern, the open transom and expandable swim platform connect to a beach club with shell doors that open on each side. You’ll also find a gym, a sauna and a cinema nearby. As for toys, Juno can store a limousine and sports tender measuring 33 feet, respectively. The yacht is also fitted with a tender platform amidship that provides direct access to the main deck lobby.

Dixon Yacht Design reveals 71m hybrid concept Juno JR

UK studio Dixon Yacht Design has revealed a 70.6-metre superyacht concept called Juno JR. An evolution of the studio's 106-metre Juno, this concept intends to "harmonise the best of motor yacht and sailing yacht design" in a more compact package.

Geared toward the "environmentally conscious owner", Juno JR is equipped with twin Southern Spars Dyna rigs for efficient and easy sail operations. All design, including naval architecture, has been completed in-house.

Accommodation includes a full-width owners' cabin, located amidships, and four main deck guest cabins. 

Juno JR revolves around an inside-outside concept with a large, flexible aft deck for entertaining. While full details are yet to be disclosed, exterior renderings reveal a sundeck Jacuzzi, an al fresco, 12-person dining area, two L-shaped settees and swimming pool flanked by loungers – all with uninhibited views off the stern, thanks to low-profile bulwarks and railings. A multi-articulating swim platform allows for easy water access. Juno JR also has plenty of storage, stowing two eight-metre tenders within garages and an additional seven-metre crew tender beneath the foredeck.

The ship's engine room is located amidship and can be set up with serial or parallel hybrid propulsion. Solar panels have been integrated into the flybridge, with the two propellers acting as energy recovery turbines that generate electricity while the vessel is sailing.

This superyacht is the middle child of the "Juno family", in between the 106-metre Juno and the 33-metre Mini Juno.

There was a much larger 100-meter Juno concept from the designer before utilizing the triple mast dynarig system. Mini Juno scales down the idea to just one mast but also has sustainability and Eco-conscious operations at heart. The yacht can be installed with hybrid propulsion with solar panels on the flybridge. While under sail the propellers can act as turbines to generate electricity while the vessel is under sail too. It is anticipated the vessel will be able to sail at 12-knots in good conditions.

Onboard there is a four-cabin layout for owner and guests with three cabins located forward and the full-beam master suite aft with direct access to the beach club area on the yacht. Internally the volume available is in the region of 200 Gross Tonnage. If built, construction would be a mixture between aluminium and composite materials. The Juno Is A Sailing Monohull Concept With Propellers That Can Generate Electricity

We’re now seeing more shipbuilding integrating green technology into their new hulls or concepts. Although available technology is not yet enough to completely omit carbon emissions, its reduction is already an excellent step toward eco-friendly voyages across the sea. The Juno, like the others showcased before it, harnesses the wind but also incorporates something more.

One of the challenges addressed by several modern sailing ships is the need for an experienced crew. For example, the Iddes Yachts Sail 50, Royal Huisman Wing 100, and Trident are some of the recent concepts that automate the process. Meanwhile, Dixon Yachts confirms its 350-footer will also rely on mechanical systems to hoist and stow its sails.

The Juno cuts a sleek silhouette as the sharp bow of the monohull continues with clean lines to the aft. Its three towering masts with the sails unfurled can help it reach cruising speeds of up to 23 knots in favorable winds. Keep in mind this is without any assistance from its engine, which is impressive for a vessel of its size.

Instead of solar panels, they are outfitting the ship with propellers that generate power while it sails. “This is a future-proof statement yacht, for a customer who is not afraid to do something different. It defies sailing convention but not the sailing experience,” notes Dixon Yachts. In the meantime, the Juno’s blueprints show four decks.

Owners get to enjoy a full beam suite on a private deck, while additional guest accommodations are available elsewhere. The main deck features a huge saloon, a beach bar, and a 26-foot swimming pool. The Juno’s expansive aft likewise holds a beach club with foldable terraces. Its garage can store a 33-foot tender and other water toys.

Project SY Juno

SY Juno is a 350’ cross-over concept that harmonises the best of motor yacht and sailing yacht design. She is totally unique, with an elegant poise and generous accommodation for her Owner and guests to enjoy. With a waterline length over 100m she will boast a hull speed of 23 knots under canvas alone.

Falcon Rigs have been chosen to maximise the sailing opportunity and minimise the sailing effort.  Unlike a conventional rig which requires a small army of crew, this vessel can be commanded and operated singlehandedly. The triple rigs offer a healthy sail area to displacement ratio and will assure an exhilarating sailing experience. The tried and tested control systems have proven in-service reliability.

Juno will be constructed to the Passenger Yacht Code and will offer accommodation on four decks with an intimate deck reserved for the Owner. Her expansive interior space planning will not disappoint; a full width Owners cabin suite, eight guest cabins, a beach club, cinema, a sauna/gym plus large lounges/flexible spaces on three decks. The principal saloon on the main deck leads aft to a beach bar and 8m swimming pool.

The open transom and expanding bathing platform lead forward and below decks to a beach club area with opening side shell doors. An embarkation tender platform with direct access into the main deck lobby has been accommodated amidships. The guests can choose between a 10m limousine and a 10m sports tender.

The vessel boasts impressive technological systems; an advanced hybrid propulsion system that optimizes the energy usage onboard and an energy recovery system that uses the propulsion propellers to generator electricity whilst the vessel is sailing.

This is a future proof statement yacht, for a customer who is not afraid to do something different. It defies sailing convention but not the sailing experience.
