A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

How to Charter a Yacht

Chartering a yacht should be easy, fun and inspirational.

However, before you touch base there are a few things you might like to bear in mind as the more information you provide the more efficiently and effectively your charter broker will be able to assist you. Browse through our charter experts’ guide to chartering and, armed with a handful of ideas on the type of charter you would like, simply contact the Northrop & Johnson charter team and let the fun begin.

chartering the yacht

What type of charter are you interested in?

There are no hard and fast rules as to which to choose first: the yacht or destination. Start off by thinking about the type of charter experience you would like, and the time of year you want to cruise, and the rest will fall into place. Think about your interests and what appeals to you about chartering a yacht. For example, if you are looking to relax and unwind then a yacht with a spa and an onboard masseuse would be ideal, while a yacht with an aqua park, plenty of water toys, onboard games and perhaps a dedicated movie room would be great if you have younger guests or even teenagers in the charter party.  The opportunities are endless on board a luxury yacht charter, and your Northrop & Johnson charter expert will be able to suggest lots of exceptional activities to make your charter as luxurious, relaxing, active, fun or dynamic as you could wish for.

chartering the yacht

What type of charter yacht is most suitable for you?

Think about the type of yacht that would best suit the size and character of your charter party. Although most luxury yachts have certain details in common, they are all unique and offer a range of different features. For example, a traditional motor yacht is ideal for a family charter, while a sailing yacht would be a fantastic choice for a real yachting enthusiast. If the jet-set lifestyle appeals to you, then a fast, modern motor yacht offers the utmost in style. Gather as many ideas as you can regarding the facilities and accommodation you would like a yacht to offer and then browse through Northrop & Johnson’s portfolio of charter yachts. There you will find information on yacht sizes, guest capacity, price, leisure facilities and where they are available.

chartering the yacht

Where would you like to charter?

The time of year during which you wish to charter may well determine the destinations and yachts are available to you. Whether there are specific areas you would like to visit or particular activities you would like to pursue, your charter broker will be able to recommend the most suitable cruising grounds for your charter party. One thing to consider is peak-season availability; for example, almost 80 percent of the biggest yachts are found along the Côte d’Azur during the height of the summer season, but this is also the area with the greatest demand for charter. Wherever you have your heart set on cruising, it really is worth planning ahead as finding the perfect yacht in the right location with availability for your preferred dates is paramount to your experience.

chartering the yacht

What facilities can you expect to find on board a charter yacht?

From entertainment facilities to water toys and audio-visual equipment, the following are just a few of the facilities charter clients can expect to find on board a luxury charter yacht. If you are looking for something in particular, ask your Northrop & Johnson charter expert. They know all of the yachts available – their crews, the ambiance and the details that make each one unique – and they can suggest yachts based on particular amenities and facilities.

Outdoor entertainment – On the larger charter yachts Jacuzzis and spa pools are a given. There also will be a combination of shaded and unshaded areas in which guests can lounge. Another outdoor offering is alfresco dining with enough seating for the number of guests the yacht can sleep.

Indoor entertainment – Internet connections and satellite TV should be found on board most charter yachts. A library of books and movies, board games and game consoles are usually carried on board to keep guests entertained on rainy days, and gym equipment is increasingly common on board.

Water toys – From Jet Skis, water skis, kayaks and snorkeling equipment to tenders and even small sailing dinghies, water toys are a main attraction of a superyacht charter. Flyboards, jetpacks and Seabobs, alongside windsurfing equipment and additional items usually are found aboard larger yachts. Inflatable waterslides, trampolines and towable toys for children can usually be found on family friendly yachts.

Charter rates explained

Rates are usually quoted by the week, with seven nights on board being the standard yacht charter period accepted and quoted by most yachts. Charters also can be for durations longer than seven nights. Some yachts may consider charters of less than seven nights, offering long weekend charters to fill gaps to take advantage of the quieter, low-season periods, or for special sporting events such as the Monaco Grand Prix. During the peak seasons of July and August and Christmas and New Year, rates are usually higher, while some yachts also have mid-season rates for the months of June and September, and low-season rates apply to all other months that the yacht is available.

Alternatively, some yachts will quote the same rates all year round but are far more prepared to negotiate off-peak. On top of the weekly charter fee, when using the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) charter contract, which is the most commonly used, the charterer also is responsible for the food and drink consumed on board, the fuel (not just for the yacht but also for the tenders and any motorized water toys), harbor fees and dockage, and communications. Depending on where the yacht is cruising, the charterer is responsible for the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the charter. This is complex and depends on where the yacht is boarded. It is the responsibility of the retail charter broker to advise charter clients on all VAT matters concerning a superyacht charter. The Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) is, as its name indicates, more inclusive. Three meals per day and fuel for four hours of cruising per day are included. Some yachts operating under CTI terms include basic beverages.

Crew wages, maintenance, onboard laundry and all other fixed running costs involved in the yacht’s operation are the responsibility of the owner. However, the charterer is responsible for any gratuities.

chartering the yacht

Advance provisioning allowance explained

Whatever the terms of your charter contract, a charterer should understand how the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) works. The APA is an amount of 20 to 30 percent of the charter fee for a “non-inclusive” charter and about five percent for an “all-inclusive” charter. It is sent to the yacht before the charter to provision the yacht according to the charterer’s preferences.

During the charter, the captain will provide a running account of the usage of the funds and, at the end of the charter, the captain will present a detailed account along with any unused funds in cash.

If the APA balance runs low during the charter, the client is expected to provide the captain with a sufficient amount in cash to cover the needs for the remainder of the charter. Since many charterers prefer not to carry quantities of cash, the charter broker can hold an amount and release it to the captain as needed.

Remember, planning a superyacht charter should be a fun experience, but to be fully covered you need the right charter broker by your side. Once you have chosen your desired yacht, your Northrop & Johnson charter expert will prepare all the necessary paperwork to secure the yacht. They will then liaise with the yacht’s captain and together they will arrange every detail. From menus to cruising locations to on-shore activities, special needs and dietary requirements, they will ensure you and your guests enjoy the ultimate charter experience.

Types of charters

When it comes to yacht chartering, there are several types of charters available depending on your preferences and needs. Some of the most common types of charters include:

Bareboat chartering

This is a type of charter where you are in complete control of the yacht and are responsible for everything from navigation to cooking and cleaning. You are required to have sailing experience and a boating license.

Crewed chartering

In this type of charter, you have a crew on board who take care of all the sailing and maintenance of the yacht, leaving you free to relax and enjoy the journey.

Day chartering

This is a type of charter where you hire a yacht for a day or a few hours to enjoy a short excursion or a special event like a birthday party or a wedding.

How much does it actually cost to charter a yacht?

When it comes to chartering a yacht, prices can vary widely depending on the type of yacht, its size, and the duration of the charter.

Here is a rough guide to the charter prices for some of the most popular types of yachts:

  • Motor Yacht: $20,000 ~ $500,000 per week.
  • Sailing Yachts: $10,000 ~$250,000 per week.
  • Catamarans: $8,000 ~ $50,000 per week.
  • Mega Yachts: $500,000 ~ $1 million per week.

What does a yacht charter include?

When you charter a yacht, there are two main options: crewed and bareboat.

A crewed charter includes a captain and crew who will handle all the details of the yacht, including navigation, meals, and cleaning.

On the other hand, a bareboat charter gives you more freedom but requires you to provide your own captain and crew.

Can you negotiate yacht charter?

Yes, it is possible to negotiate yacht charter prices.

Many yacht charter companies are willing to work with customers to find a price that works for both parties.

When negotiating yacht charter prices, it is important to do your research beforehand. Know what the average price is for the type of yacht you are interested in and be prepared to discuss any additional services or amenities you may want included in the price.

It is also important to remember that the price of a yacht charter can depend on a number of factors, including the time of year, the duration of the charter, and the location.

Be flexible when negotiating and be willing to consider alternative options if the price is not negotiable.

Is alcohol included in a yacht charter?

It depends on the type of charter and the specific yacht charter company. Some companies include beer and wine in the charter fee, while others offer it as an optional extra or do not include it at all.

It’s essential to check with the yacht charter company before booking to understand what is included in the charter fee.

Another option is to work with a yacht charter broker, who can help you negotiate the terms of the charter and arrange for all your needs, including beverages, to be taken care of.

What size yacht needs crews?

Generally, yachts over 50 feet in length will require a crew to operate the vessel safely and provide guests with the ultimate luxury experience. Crew members may include a captain, chef, steward/stewardess, and deckhand.

What is the average tip for a yacht charter?

The average tip for a yacht charter can vary depending on the type of yacht and the length of the charter.

Typically, the standard tip is 10-20% of the charter price, divided among the crew members. For example, if you charter a yacht for $10,000, you may want to consider tipping $1,000-$2,000.

Do yacht charters tip in cash?

The way you choose to tip can depend on the yacht charter company and your specific charter agreement.

Some companies may include a mandatory service fee or gratuity in the charter cost, while others leave it up to the discretion of the client. It’s important to ask your charter company about their tipping policy before embarking on your trip.

Understanding Yacht Chartering Costs: A Comprehensive Guide

chartering the yacht

Imagine sailing the open seas, surrounded by azure waters, and basking in the luxury of a private yacht. Yacht chartering offers a unique and exhilarating experience, but it’s essential to understand the costs associated with it before embarking on this adventure. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the various expenses involved in chartering a yacht, from the base charter rates to additional fees and seasonal price variations. We’ll also provide you with valuable tips on how to budget effectively for your dream yacht charter.

Base Charter Rates

The base charter rate is the starting point for calculating the cost of your yacht charter. This rate typically covers the rental of the yacht itself for a specific duration, which can range from a few days to several weeks. The base charter rate varies widely depending on several factors:

  • Yacht Size and Type: Larger and more luxurious yachts come with higher base charter rates. Motor yachts are generally more expensive than sailing yachts due to their higher operational costs.
  • Yacht Age and Condition: Newer yachts in excellent condition command higher charter rates than older vessels.
  • Location: The location of your charter significantly influences the base rate. Popular destinations like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas tend to have higher prices and local taxes.
  • Time of Year: Peak chartering seasons in specific regions can lead to higher base rates. For instance, the Caribbean can be more expensive during the winter months when the weather is ideal.
  • Duration: Longer charters may offer lower daily rates compared to shorter ones.
  • Inclusions: Some charters include additional amenities such as water toys, scuba equipment, or a chef. These extras can impact the base rate.

Additional Fees

Understanding the additional fees associated with yacht chartering is crucial for budgeting effectively. These fees can significantly impact the total cost of your charter:

  • Fuel: Yachts consume fuel, even sailing yachts, and you may be responsible for covering these costs. Fuel expenses can vary depending on the yacht’s size, distance traveled, and usage of amenities like air conditioning and water sports equipment.
  • Crew: Most charter yachts come with a crew that includes a captain, chef, or possibly a stewardess, and deckhand. The crew’s salaries and gratuities are usually included in the base rate, but it’s customary to tip them, often around 15-20% of the base charter rate.
  • Provisions: You may need to budget for food and beverages during your charter. You can either purchase your provisions locally or opt for a fully provisioned charter, where the crew stocks the yacht with your preferred items.
  • Dockage and Marina Fees: When you choose to dock at marinas or ports, you’ll incur fees. These fees can vary widely, and the more popular the destination, the higher the costs.
  • Taxes and Permits: Some regions may require specific permits or impose taxes on yacht charters. Be sure to inquire about these expenses before booking.
  • Communication and Entertainment: If you require internet access or want to use satellite TV, you may have to pay extra for these services.
  • Optional Extras: Water sports equipment, scuba diving, and excursions are often available for an additional fee.

Seasonal Price Variations

The time of year you choose for your yacht charter can significantly affect the overall cost:

  • High Season: The high season typically corresponds to the best weather conditions in a given region. Charter rates are at their peak during this time, so expect higher prices.
  • Low Season: Chartering during the off-peak season can yield cost savings. However, be prepared for less predictable weather.
  • Shoulder Season: Consider chartering during the shoulder season, which falls between the high and low seasons. You may enjoy good weather and more reasonable rates.

Tips for Budgeting

Here are some tips to help you budget effectively for your yacht charter:

  • Set a Clear Budget: Determine your total budget, including the base charter rate, additional fees, and discretionary expenses. Stick to it to avoid overspending.
  • Plan Ahead: Book your charter well in advance to secure better rates and availability, especially during peak seasons.
  • Opt for Inclusive Packages : Fully provisioned or all-inclusive charters can simplify your budgeting by covering many expenses upfront.
  • Be Mindful of Crew Gratuity: Factor in the crew’s gratuity when planning your budget. It’s a significant expense and a customary practice.
  • Consider Trip Insurance: Trip insurance can protect you from unforeseen circumstances and potential additional costs.
  • Review the Charter Agreement: Thoroughly review the charter agreement to understand what is and isn’t included in your charter rate.

Yacht chartering can be an unforgettable experience, and understanding the costs involved is essential to ensure a stress-free journey. By considering base charter rates, additional fees, and seasonal price variations, and following our budgeting tips, you can embark on your yacht charter adventure with confidence, knowing that you’ve planned for a seamless and enjoyable voyage on the high seas. Happy sailing!

Chartering Your Own Yacht - The Complete Guide

Thinking about whether you should charter your yacht here's everything you should know about it..

Buying a yacht for private use is a great investment - in your future adventures, in your new lifestyle, in your mental and physical well-being. You get to explore the unexplored, spend quality time with your friends and family, or party like a celebrity. It's an experience of a lifetime and a dream come true for many.

However, even though you try your best to maximize your time on board, there are still weeks or even months when the boat’s unused and the crew ‘underutilized’. When your boat is just sitting in the marina, it’s just costing you money.

That’s why you should consider putting your yacht in a charter fleet. It can not only offset your expenses but even generate profit. Most importantly, it guarantees that your yacht is fully maintenanced and in top shape for when you decide to set sail on another vacation.

The benefits of chartering your yacht

Chartering your yacht is a great strategy for making some money off your yacht when you’re not using it. But there are also a number of other advantages - here are the main ones:

Reduced operational costs & additional income

A busy charter yacht can cover a significant portion of your operating expenses such as dockage, maintenance, insurance, and other incidentals. Additionally, charter yacht ownership produces an income that you otherwise as a private owner wouldn’t have, providing a faster return on the investment.

Increased yacht reputation and value

A yacht that is marketed for charter has a better market profile. On top of that, If the yacht is active and has a proven success record of providing high quality experience to its clients, it will attract both charter guests and potential buyers in the future. In the long run, chartering is a sound strategy for increasing your boat’s value which would otherwise depreciate with time.

The yacht stays in top-notch condition

It may sound counterintuitive but yachts that are part of the charter fleet are usually more regularly and better maintained. Frequent cosmetic and mechanical maintenance that chartering requires can extend the life of your yacht and preserve its resale value.

More experienced boat crew

Charter yachts attract the best caliber of crew that will maintain their service at the highest industry standard. That also means you can enjoy the same quality of service whenever you decide to use it for personal plans.

Earnings and expenses

As a yacht owner, you can definitely earn a profit by chartering your yacht and offset your costs. Here’s the breakdown:

The price of the charter depends on the market, the size, model, condition of your boat, the number of cabins, etc. The expenses which you must take into account as the boat owner include:

  • registration
  • ship maintenance
  • crew salaries
  • charter equipment (water toys, bed linen, towels, shampoos, etc.)
  • professional photography

Even though there are many factors that influence the boat price, we at Magnum always try to set a competitive price that’ll make you stand out on the yacht charter market.  See the prices for the luxury yachts in our fleet here.

How many weeks can I charter my yacht?

For luxury yachts, you can expect your yacht to be booked for a minimum of 6-12 weeks a year, depending on the season.

The average number of weeks is higher for chartering sailboats and catamarans, usually about 14-20 weeks.

What to expect of a yacht charter management company?

With the right agency for yacht charter management , you can reap all the benefits of chartering your own yacht - offset operational costs, keep your crew sharp and your boat in top shape, as well as build a brand reputation.

The role of such a company is to provide consulting, support and help you achieve maximum booking through thoughtful promotion.

Here’s how that works in the example of Magnum:

Once a yacht owner decides to partner with our agency, we both sign the Central Booking Agreement. It states the rights and obligations of the owner, as well as the rights and obligations of us as a central agency. In it we also define the price list according to which the charter service for a particular vessel will be charged.

The agreement can be signed for a definite period (1 year) or for an indefinite period and can be terminated via written notice (from either party).

Bookings, promotion & payments

Once we sign the Central Booking Agreement with the boat owner, we focus all our efforts on promotion and positioning the boat on the market. It takes some time for the yacht to become "recognized" on the market but since we have access to a large global booking system through which we receive inquiries (YACHTFOLIO), this process doesn’t take too long.

chartering the yacht

A central agency for yacht charter management will help you to achieve more bookings through top yacht promotion. (Image source: Shutterstock)

After receiving an inquiry from a potential client, we send them a detailed offer with the price and presentation materials (brochure, crew profile, etc.), to give them a complete and better impression of the yacht. If the client confirms the booking, we sign the MYBA contract. The contract is signed by all the parties involved in the booking process - the client (charterer), broker, stakeholder and the yacht owner.

Payment to the yacht owner is made in such a way that half of the amount to be paid to the owner is paid on the day of the boarding, and the remaining amount on the day of unloading (or the first working day, if unloading day is during the weekend).

The responsibilities of the yacht owner

If you decide to charter your yacht, here’s what’s expected of you as the owner:

  • During the term of the Central Booking Agreement, the yacht owner is not allowed to enter a business partnership with another yacht charter agency and is obliged to refer all agents who may contact him to his central agent.
  • The yacht owner mustn’t promote his yacht independently or without the consent of his central agent.
  • The owner must deliver professional photographs of the boat to the agency.
  • The owner is obliged to invoice his charters in accordance with the regulations of the Republic of Croatia.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to ensure the registration of the vessel and to have valid insurance policies.
  • The yacht owner must provide other documentation and take actions that precede the provision of accommodation services on board.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to provide an adequate crew in accordance with the size of the boat and the uniforms for all crew members.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to sign the charter agreements on time and report any problems or delays to the agency as soon as possible.
  • The boat must be adequately prepared for chartering - that includes cleaning, equipment procurement, as well as accommodation, uniforms & training for the crew members.
  • The yacht owner must have a registered company and be able to issue invoices.

Westport Memento Vivere

Several charter companies have recently welcomed new yachts into their charter fleets, with inquiries now being accepted for summer yacht charter bookings in the Bahamas and Mediterranean.

First up is Memento Vivere , a 130-foot Westport that RJC Yachts just welcomed to its charter fleet in the Bahamas. Built in 2005, Memento Vivere (formerly known as No Bad Ideas ) was most recently refitted this year. The yacht accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, and it’s decked out for watersports fun with a 40-foot Intrepid tender, a 14-foot AB Inflatables jet tender, a pair of Sea-Doos, a trio of Seabobs, an eFoil, an inflatable slide, paddleboards, tow toys, inflatable loungers, and snorkeling and fishing gear (including deep-sea fishing rods).

Numarine Amore

Also now accepting bookings in the Bahamas is Amore , a 2022 Numarine that is part of the Fraser fleet. This six-stateroom yacht accommodates 12 guests and has a main-deck master stateroom, as well as a second master up on the bridge deck. A multipurpose room on board can be used as an extra cabin for a nanny or other supernumerary. Guest amenities include a lower-deck cinema room with reclining chairs, a beach club with a day head and wet bar, a 29-foot Scout tender equipped for fishing, a 16-foot Highfield RIB, and various water toys.

Baglietto Andiamo

Over in the Mediterranean, Hill Robinson has welcomed the 156-foot Baglietto Andiamo to the charter fleet in the South of France. This yacht is a 2017 build that accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, including a full-beam master on the main deck. Notable design features include sky lounge balconies that extend out over the water to port and starboard, along with a sundeck infinity pool with a waterfall effect.

Feadship Olympus

Edmiston, meanwhile, has welcomed the 180-foot Feadship Olympus to the charter fleet in the Mediterranean. It’s a 1996 custom build that was most recently refitted in 2023, with accommodations for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms. The master is forward-facing on the main deck with a study, hair salon, walk-in closet, his-and-hers bathroom with a whirlpool tub, and private 180-degree observation lounge. Up on the bridge deck, the VIP stateroom also has broad views of the outdoors.

Golden Yachts Emir

And that’s not all: Fraser also recently welcomed the 270-foot Golden Yachts Emir to the charter fleet in the Mediterranean. Originally launched as O’Mega in 2004 and rejuvenated in 2022, Emir can accommodate as many as 28 guests in 14 staterooms.

While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.

You can also  keep money in your wallet  by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).

So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.

Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

chartering the yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

chartering the yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

chartering the yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

chartering the yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

chartering the yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

chartering the yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

chartering the yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

What are the rules for chartering a yacht in the USA?

chartering the yacht

The USA boasts some of the most diverse cruising grounds in the world, attracting superyachts from far and wide to its glittering shores. If you are keen to discover more about what this amazing country can offer for a yacht charter , there are some important factors to bear in mind first.

In this article:

Types of charters in the US

Crewed charters, bareboat charters, bareboat charter agreements, tax implications for the charterer, need more advice.

There are certain legal fundamentals of chartering a yacht in US waters which you may not be aware of. So, before you go ahead and book your superyacht rental in the United States, here’s what you need to know.

Without getting too bogged down in the legal minutae, simply put, yacht brokers operate two main types of charter agreements in the US; time/voyage (aka crewed or commercial) charter agreements and bareboat/demise charter agreements.

Deckhands keeping watch on a charter yacht

This type of charter agreement is operated for a specific  time or voyage . In general, the following applies;

  • The yacht is deemed as being operated commercially
  • The owner is considered to be carrying passengers for hire
  • The owner maintains primary possession of the yacht
  • One contract agreement

To legally operate crewed charters in US waters, the yacht must be;

  • US flagged, and
  • Hold a coastwise endorsement

To be eligible for a Coastwise endorsement, the yacht must either have been:

  • Built in the US, or if foreign built;
  • Must be granted with a MURAD Waiver.

To be eligible for this waiver, a yacht must be more than 3 years old and owned by a US citizen or US entity (dependant on how it is structured)

A US Flag flying on the back of a yacht

Rules for crewed charters

  • Can only carry a maximum of 12 passengers
  • May not conduct commercial fishing, towing, salvage, or carry cargo for hire

The obvious benefit to crewed charters is that the owner is wholly responsible for the yacht throughout the duration of the charter.

These types of charters are similar to those you would undertake, say in the Mediterranean or Caribbean , in that you are renting a yacht with crew for a specific voyage or length of time.

Charter guests jump off the aft deck of a foreign-flagged sailing yacht in the USA

All yachts that do not qualify under the commercial charter rules and wish to cruise in US waters are considered bareboat (aka demise) charters.

This type of charter operates as follows;

  • Applies to all foreign-flagged or foreign-built yachts not entitled to a MURAD Waiver
  • Permitted to conduct charters in US waters, and between US ports
  • The yacht is not legally considered as being used for commercial purposes

Rules for bareboat charters

  • The charterer takes over the entire yacht without crew, therefore deemed to be operating as the owner for the duration of the charter
  • The charterer is also responsible for the hiring of crew, in which the yacht's owner must have no involvement
  • Two separate contracts are drawn up: one for hiring the yacht and one for the crew

Yachts moored in Florida

In essence, a bareboat charter agreement’s main characteristic is that it places possession of the vessel in the hands of the charter party at the time the charter starts. In legal terms, this means the owner relinquishes “possession, command and navigation of the vessel” as to be “tantamount to, although just short of, an outright transfer of ownership.”

The owner must also have no involvement in the crew selection, nor any ties to any company selecting the crew, which could be construed as enacting a measure of control over the yacht and thus contravene the rules of this type of charter.

The charterer in effect assumes all responsibility for the vessel and its activities – including an obligation to maintain or repair the yacht and return it in the same condition as it was at the beginning of their charter period.

They are also responsible for crew selection and their remuneration for the duration of the charter.

Tax may also be due depending on the type of charter. For example, a yacht undertaking a crewed charter originating in Palm Beach, Florida will have no additional tax to pay. However, for a bareboat charter, tax will be liable at 7% of the value of the charter.

There may be other potential duties payable, which can vary from state to state.

Overall, there are distinct benefits for chartering a US-flagged, or eligible, vessel. However, charterers with their heart set on a foreign-flagged yacht can still enjoy cruising the various destinations in the US, they simply need to understand the laws and what's at stake beforehand.

Planning ahead is key. This is where a good charter broker comes in, especially one with in-depth knowledge of the legal aspects of chartering foreign-flagged yachts in US waters.

Yacht Charters in Greece Report Unusually High Number of Bookings

Summer 2024 is busier than usual in the Mediterranean, especially with the limited offer of crewed yacht charters. First-choice motor yachts report a 65% booking rate, while catamarans are up to 73% booked. The remaining dates are being snapped up fast.

United States - April 12, 2024 —

chartering the yacht

The team at MyGreekCharter is raising an alarm—if planning to wait until the last minute to book a charter, it might be too late.

“Unlike vacation rentals, the supply is virtually unlimited, and yachts are limited by available docking space in marinas. Having a yacht in a summer hotspot with docking space and charter rights is becoming increasingly more difficult,” says Daniel Asmus, owner of DMA Yachting.

For those yearning for a lavish summer getaway, the advice is to plan without delay, as the prime booking window is swiftly closing.

Key Market Trends for the 2024 Greek Yacht Charter Market

  • The development of new marinas is progressing slowly, restricting the overall yacht capacity.
  • Summer season kicks off almost 3 weeks earlier and ends 3 weeks later (April-October)
  • Luxury tourism has grown 87% since Covid.
  • The charter season is extending, starting in April this year, marking an earlier onset than in previous years.

Winter 2024/25 is filling up as well in the Caribbean

6 months earlier than in previous years, Caribbean charters are reporting 40% complete. The Caribbean, particularly the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is witnessing an uptrend similar to Greece. Mo Pristas from CharterGuru has reported unusually high bookings in the BVI, while Bahamas Motor Yachts reports a noticeably prolonged 2024 summer charter season.

The Average Value of Crewed Charters Has Been Growing

Motor yachts are at the forefront of this growth, with this yacht category experiencing a 30% increase in the average expenditure per charter since 2021. This increase reflects a robust demand and a shift in consumer preferences towards more luxurious and extended yacht charters.

An additional factor to the increase of the charter amount is simply the increased size and value of the available yachts, which have grown from a 70’ average to a 98’ average since 2021.

The Increasing Number of New Yachts Entering the Market Is Causing Concern About Industry Overload

The rate at which new yachts are being introduced into the market is accelerating. While older yachts aren’t being replaced but refurbished to extend service life, the overall number of yachts is rapidly increasing. This growth puts pressure on an already strained infrastructure, sparking debate among industry experts about the potential for overcrowding and its limits.

The available docking space nevertheless limits this increase in supply. Greece is reporting huge issues with marina availability as new developments are being delayed.

Charterers Are Looking for Less Crowded Charter Areas

The iconic Cyclades Islands continue attracting visitors for their historical and aesthetic appeal, but the hype has consequences, and tourists are looking to less crowded alternatives. Lesser-known destinations like Antiparos , Anafi , Ikaria , Kythira , and Nisiros are gaining traction as travelers seek quieter, more unique experiences away from mainstream tourist hotspots. Greece's diverse coastline, sailing conditions, and enormous charter fleet offer many charter options. A little research goes a long way, with an opportunity to explore more authentic and unspoiled destinations in Greece.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' son accused of groping female steward on luxury charter yacht

  • Sean "Diddy" Combs and his son Christian "King" Combs are co-defendants in a sexual assault lawsuit.
  • The plaintiff claims Christian assaulted her on a yacht chartered by his father in December 2022.
  • Aaron Dyer, attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, discredited the lawsuit as "lewd and meritless."

Insider Today

Music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is once again entangled in legal problems related to sex crimes, AP reports .

Sean Combs, who is the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation, has been named as a co-defendant in a new lawsuit accusing his son of sexual assault .

The plaintiff, Grace O'Marcaigh, filed a lawsuit against Sean Combs and his son, rapper Christian "King" Combs.

In the suit, she alleges that Christian Combs assaulted her on a yacht chartered by his father in December 2022.

O'Marcaigh was working on Victorious, a luxury superyacht built by Akyacht and owned and operated by Fraser.

The 278-foot superyacht sleeps 12 guests and can be chartered for $950,000 a week during the winter season when the $117 million vessel cruises the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Christian Combs was 24 at the time, and his accuser was 25.

O'Marcaigh's attorneys filed the suit on Thursday in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The lawsuit, reviewed by BI, states that O'Marcaigh worked as a steward in the yachting industry since 2018.

It states her planned career in hospitality and the yachting industry was derailed due to the "trauma" she has suffered as a result of the alleged assault.

The suit accuses the defendants of assault, battery, sexual assault, premises liability, aiding and abetting, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Aaron Dyer, attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, discredited the lawsuit as "lewd and meritless" and said they would be "filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim."

Sean Combs leased the yacht in December 2022 and fully controlled the vessel's staff, including O'Marcaigh, said the suit.

Related stories

During one shift, O'Marcaigh waited on Christian Combs, who she suspected was "intoxicated from a mixture of narcotics and alcohol."

He reportedly became "aggressive" and violently grabbed her arm and began hurting her.

Christian Combs' "penis was erect, and he grabbed her arms"

The suit claims O'Marcaigh was then drugged and sexually assaulted by Christian Combs.

Producer Rodney Jones obtained an audio recording of the incident.

A transcript of the recording is included in the document, indicating that O'Marcaigh attempted to leave the situation as Christian Combs forced her to take tequila shots.

"I'm going to stop. Stop. I have to go. I have to go. Honestly, I'm like already losing sleep. I have to go now," said O'Marcaigh, per the transcript.

Later in the interaction, she asked him to stop touching her inappropriately: "Excuse me, you don't touch my legs like that. I'll move my legs where I want to."

At another point, she told the music mogul's son to "take your hand off my ass."

O'Marcaigh fought Christian Combs off when he stripped down and tried to force her into a nonconsensual sex act.

Christian Combs' "penis was erect, and he grabbed her arms," trying to force O'Marcaigh to "perform oral sex on him," the suit states.

The document shows photos of the injuries O'Marcaigh sustained during the altercation, including bruises on her arms.

The suit accuses Sean Combs of intentionally failing to ensure a safe environment on the yacht. It alleges he allowed his son to "behave carelessly" as he "observed and mimicked his actions."

The allegations against Christian Combs follow a slew of sexual misconduct allegations and lawsuits against his father .

"The apple does not fall far from the tree," reads the lawsuit.

Business Insider contacted the Los Angeles County Superior Court for more information.
