Super Yacht Crew

Superyacht Australia

How to become superyacht crew.

australia superyacht jobs

Superyacht Australia, the peak national industry body for the superyacht industry in Australia, is proud to have published a new resource aimed at making it easy for Australians to start their journey as superyacht crew.  Australians are natural superyacht crew with over 90% of our population living on the coast.  Fishing, surfing, swimming, sailing, and paddling are weekly pastimes for nearly all Aussie kids growing up in and around the water. Many have “saltwater in their veins” with surf lifesaving “Nippers” and sailing club “Tackers” programs training children from the age of five in skills that will be sought after as future superyacht crew.

The superyacht industry has virtually been unknown to young Aussies, with those discovering it as a result of backpacking in Europe or by reality TV shows such as “Below Deck” broadcasting on popular streaming services. Internationally the superyacht industry is booming, with vessels getting much larger, more of them and requiring double the amount of crew as many yachts offer rotational positions for senior crew.

The superyacht industry is also gaining momentum in Australia with popular charter destinations including Sydney, the Queensland coast and the Kimberley’s attracting more yachts. This new resource aims to educate young Aussies on what a superyacht is, where you can find them cruising (within Australia and internationally) and different entry-level roles available onboard.

The qualifications required are easy to complete locally in Australia and can provide a great base for future maritime careers.  The STCW 95 (Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers) certification is the mandatory qualification set by the International Maritime Organisation and takes 8 days to complete including theory and practical courses.

Australia is lucky to have two great training providers including Crew Pacific , based in Cairns, and Superyacht Crew Academy based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Both training providers offer STCW courses and further Steward/ess and Deckhand courses, aimed to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of the interior and exterior departments before starting their first roles. The resource also outlines the Mandatory Certificate of Medical Fitness required to confirm you are medically fit to perform the duties required onboard.

Once qualified, Australia has many recruitment companies eager to place “green” crew into their first role. This includes Hill Maritime , a worldwide maritime recruitment and consultancy firm, that places quality engineers on quality vessels all over the world.  Coastal Yachting Recruitment , based on the Gold Coast, is also experienced in placing professional crew worldwide on luxury superyachts.

David Good, CEO, Superyacht Australia commented “Australia has the reputation for providing the best yacht crew in the world, we have a great education, excellent work ethic, and a relaxed professional attitude. This is our opportunity to travel, get paid exceptionally well, and gain sea-time experience that is highly sought after when you want to come ashore and use that experience.”

Superyacht Australia will be distributing this new resource at career expos in major cities such as Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Brisbane where up to 12,000 school leavers per event attend seeking information on future careers.

This new resource can be found on our Superyacht Australia website here: https://www.superyacht-australia.com/superyacht-careers-information/

What Our Students Say

“I have been on a Superyacht for six months and I absolutely love it! The crew is great and the owners are wonderful. We left Florida two weeks ago and we are on a three month trip over to California! We made a stop in Cuba and the owners invited all of the crew to go on day trips with the guests to sight see! Now we are in the Cayman Islands. From here we head through the Panama Canal and then we go to Panama City, Papagallo Peninsula Costa Rica then Cabo San Lucas, before we end up to Southern California. This is such a great experience for me. I do stewardess work, cook for crew and guests, handle lines when docking and leaving as well as watch shifts while we’re underway. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the valuable training I received in my classes! Thank you!”

Jessica Benway – Stewardess

“I am so excited!!! I went for my first interview yesterday afternoon at an agency and got a call from them later on advising that they’d put me forward for a 2nd stewardess position and to expect a call from the captain. He rang this morning and we met at Starbucks and… they are flying me up on Friday! It’s happened so fast, but it felt right. The yacht is currently in Norfolk, Virginia and we will be heading out very soon to spend the season in New England. The captain was really laid back and very forthcoming. Apparently the yacht is privately owned by a wealthy guy (obviously) and isn’t chartered out very often. Mostly they do cocktail parties. He thinks we will be in the Mediterranean next year although he is waiting on confirmation from the owner. The pace on the yacht seems very relaxed. It will be a great place for me to learn as much as possible. I am so keen to get started. Thank you!”

Carlie – Stewardess

“Everything is going GREAT for me over here! We have travelled from Fort Lauderdale all the way along the East Coast up to Labrador, Canada over 4000 miles so far. My roster is split so I spend the first part of the day as a deckhand and the second part of the day as the second stewardess onboard a 154 foot SuperYacht. The owners are fantastic. I really enjoyed the interior crew course and feel so much more prepared for my stewardess role.”

Katie Ford – Stewardess and Deckhand

“I was totally impressed by the STCW training I received at the Superyacht Crew Academy. The instructors were excellent, the equipment top notch, and I truly feel confident that I would perform well in the case of an emergency aboard ship. Thank you Chris and Deb for being so helpful to me. As a foreign student coming to Australia for this training, your kindness was extra meaningful. I am now a Superyacht Agent in Noumea and spend a lot of time aboard superyachts. Even though I am not a member of the crews, my STCW training is right there in the back of my mind just in case there was an emergency; especially when refuelling, helping resupply the medical equipment or moving heavy equipment on and off the superyachts.”

Chloe Morin – Super yacht Agent Noumea Ocean Services

“You are by far the most professional and successful training facility that I have dealt with around the world. Keep up the amazing work!”

Nick Smith – Chief Officer M/Y Akula

“A big thank you for your professionalism to all people from the Superyacht Crew Academy. Your team really made this experience unforgettable.”

Laurent Dreyer – Fastrack Graduate

“My experience with Superyacht Crew Academy was amazing. I had a fantastic time on the deck crew course and learnt a lot more than I expected.”

Tom Armstrong – Deckhand

“In my first interview I got offered a job! I really liked the chief stewardess so I am on a 43m private Superyacht for the season. I have been on the boat for two weeks and so far all is going well. I am looking forward to a good season and I will be home for Christmas. Two other people who did the course with me, Emily and Adam also got jobs very easily! Thank you again for all of your support and giving us a great head start!”

Ashtyn Leary – Stewardess

“The instructors were excellent, very professional and thorough. My training at Superyacht Crew Academy made my job as stewardess aboard the Tango possible and enjoyable. It really helps to have the inside story from experts before you begin. I’m happy to recommend the Superyacht Crew Academy to anyone interested in working in this industry.”

Haley – Stewardess M/Y Tango

“I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at Superyacht Crew Academy. I am currently working on a 43m M/Y Eclipse which is situated in Israel during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. I am heading into my third week here, now crossing to Genoa, Italy for the boat show. I am a 3rd stewardess and loving it. We are now in Kotor in Montenegro near Croatia and it is absolutely stunning. I am loving my job and have been lucky enough to rotate with duties and will be doing service this week, in a few hours actually. Thank you for all your help!”

Lauren A – Stewardess

” I thought I would give you a quick update on my adventures. I’ve just finished a cruise on an expedition vessel and am back in Antibes looking for a new position as a stewardess. Thank you for the casual work experience I did while completing my interior course. It’s definitely a lot better now that I have the right qualifications and some experience. I’m finding that there is so much more available to me.”

Natasha Harris – Stewardess

“Thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was amazing and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore. The Boat has offered me an awesome opportunity to learn all there is to learn as well as an awesome salary, benefits, and program. Not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family…. I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salary, benefits or program!”

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

This phrase about AI not taking your job sounds smart — but is it true?

  • An economist has said, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."
  • AI seems to be a positive for many workers, but some roles are more at risk of replacement.
  • Experts advise skilling up and leaning into soft human skills as AI becomes embedded in work life.

Insider Today

You may have heard a version of the phrase, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."

Economist Richard Baldwin said the phrase at the 2023 World Economic Forum's Growth Summit, and variations of it have been mentioned since as people discuss the potential impacts of AI.

Baldwin told BI he wasn't sure if he coined the phrase, but the message is that AI won't replace humans, but it will give those who embrace it an advantage in the workforce.

In the 12 months since Baldwin shared his perspective, interest in artificial intelligence has only increased. A recent survey by consulting firm Bain & Company found that 85% of the companies surveyed said adopting AI was a top-five priority.

As companies ramp up their AI offerings and begin restructuring their workforce, many are revisiting the question of whether AI will be a job killer or an enhancer.

While it's still the early days of AI, we asked experts to weigh in. Should you be more worried about losing your job to a human using AI or to the AI itself?

Workers already see the benefit of AI at this stage

Baldwin said that AI is like a lawn mower or a power drill — it makes your job easier but it doesn't replace the human behind it. Other experts seemed to share a similar mindset that it's not advanced enough to function without direction, and for the most part, it helps people do better at their jobs.

Jasmine Escalera, a career coach at LiveCareer said incorporating AI can help automate repetitive tasks and "free up time to focus on upskilling."

Matt Betts, a research and development lead at leadership consulting firm RHR International, says it helps create efficiency so that consultants can focus on more impactful work, like interacting with the client.

Data has shown a similar trend that AI has helped many workers produce high-quality work in a shorter amount of time.

One study by MIT and Stanford from 2023 found that access to AI increased productivity by 14% on average, with a 34% impact on new or lower-skilled workers. A Morgan Stanley report indicated that workers with multiple income streams who used generative AI to increase their productivity made 21% more on average than those who didn't.

Related stories

AI may also be helping people land jobs. Career service LiveCareer surveyed 1,150 US workers in March and found that 85% of job seekers save time using AI for writing applications and 40% think AI improves their grammar, writing, and vocabulary.

The loss of some jobs is inevitable

AI has already redefined a number of roles and even if it doesn't take all jobs, it's bound to replace some.

IBM used to have 800 people working in HR and now has 60 because it was able to automate repetitive tasks, according to the company's marketing chief.

Klarna seems to be following a similar trajectory. The company said in a blog post in February that its AI assistant was doing the work of "700 full-time agents" after pumping the brakes on hiring.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati also weighed in on the topic at a Dartmouth event on June 8 and turned heads when she said some creative jobs may disappear, but those that could be replaced by AI "shouldn't have been there in the first place."

Carl Benedikt Frey, a director of future and work at Oxford University, said that transportation and logistics are most likely to see outright automation moving forward. He also said warehousing, manufacturing, receptionists, cashiers, and translators are also roles that are moving toward automation or semi-automation.

It's a good idea to skill up

A March Goldman Sachs report found over 300 million jobs around the world could be impacted by AI. But it's impossible to predict how exactly they will change.

Career coach Escalera said the best path forward is to lean into human soft skills while skilling up and "adopting a mindset of continuous learning." For some who are hiring, AI is becoming a prerequisite.

Tripadvisor cofounder Steve Kaufer said on "The Logan Bartlett Show" that he asked candidates during interviews if they tried out new AI chatbots. He said software engineers who didn't experiment with AI tools usually didn't get the job.

"I just don't understand it," Kaufer said. "And I probably don't want to work with that individual."

CEO of global event company Empire Entertainment, J.B. Miller, said it's an "essential new skill set," especially in an industry that involves improvising. He said it cuts down time and helps with generating ideas for set designs and talent sourcing. He asks all new hires what AI tools they use.

"There's no world where I could employ somebody who's like, I don't know how to use Excel or I don't know how to navigate the internet or do an internet search or something online like that," Miller said.

"I think that the same is true of some of these basic, AI tools," he added.

Watch: Why "deployment of AI is top of mind for everybody," according to IBM's Jonathan Adashek

Australia Gives Internet Firms 6 Months to Draft Online Child-Safety Rules

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia is giving the internet industry six months to come up with an enforceable code detailing how it will stop children seeing pornography and other inappropriate material online or face having a code imposed on it, a regulator said on Tuesday.

The eSafety Commissioner said it wrote to members of the online industry demanding a plan by Oct. 3 setting out how they plan to protect minors from seeing high-impact material before they are ready, also including themes of suicide and eating disorders.

The code should set standards for how app stores, websites including pornography and dating websites, search engines, social media platforms, chat services and even multi-player gaming platforms check that content is suitable for users, the commissioner said.

"Kids' exposure to violent and extreme pornography is a major concern for many parents and carers, and they have a key role to play," said Commissioner Julie Inman Grant in a statement.

"But it can't all be on them. We also need industry to play their part by putting in some effective barriers," she added.

The demand begins a second phase of industry codes overseen by the regulator which previously endorsed codes covering how internet companies stop the spread of terrorism or child sexual exploitation content.

Measures covered by the code protecting children from pornogrpahy could include age verification, default parental controls and software which blurs or filters unwanted sexual content, the regulator said.

A spokesperson for Google, a unit of Alphabet, said the company would work closely with the industry on the new code and a spokesperson for Facebook and Instagram owner Meta said the company continued to engage constructively with the eSafety commissioner.

Representatives of X, formerly Twitter, and app store provider Apple were not immediately available for comment.

A spokesperson for DIGI, an industry body which has most large internet companies as members and worked on the first round of codes, said it looked forward to continuing its engagement with government and the eSafety commissioner.

No Appendix, No Problem. Australia’s Remote Doctors Tell All.

Being the only physician around for hundreds of miles isn’t always bad. “It’s quite liberating to be like, ‘I’m the best person here for the job’,” said one doctor.

A dummy strapped into a replica of an medical aircraft.

By Julia Bergin

The Australia Letter is a weekly newsletter from our Australia bureau. This week’s issue is written by Julia Bergin, a reporter based in the Northern Territory.

No drugs, no tools, no team: These are the work conditions for a remote Australian doctor.

And when that is the case, when doctors have no stocked pharmacy, no operating theater, and no extra hands to call on, their job becomes less medicine and more logistics.

Dr. Rhys Harding, a remote general practitioner, said his daily work involves asking questions that his peers in big cities never need to think about: “What have I got? Who’s here? What time is it getting dark? Can the plane land?”

Next comes a long list of medical skills that he needs, such as handling complex head injuries, taking X-rays and extracting teeth.

“I’m far more comfortable in a mouth than most doctors would be,” Dr. Harding said.

For Australian doctors who work in the country’s most remote locations, practicing medicine can be limitless, limiting, isolating and exceptionally challenging. The environment is harsh, and the physical and mental demands on the doctors, who are often deployed on their own, are more extreme than in any metropolitan hospital setting.

Dr. Michael Clements, a vice president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, says it’s got less to do with remoteness and more to do with resources.

“We can do a lot with just our hands, but generally speaking we like to have our drugs, we like to have our toys, we like to have our team,” said Dr. Clements, who spent 13 years as a doctor in the Australian Air Force traveling to places like Afghanistan, Djibouti and Somalia.

Dr. Clements, now based in the east Queensland town of Townsville, operates as a fly-in-fly-out doctor for remote communities in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. These places, he says, are more medically challenging than most of the war zones he visited.

“In the military, we had access to surgeons and CT scanners and anaesthetists and orthopedic surgeons and lots of people to help,” Dr. Clements said, adding that a soldier with so much as a “tickle in their throat” would be tended to immediately.

That’s very different from remote medicine within Australia, where scant resources mean patients might have to wait weeks for an assessment, a prescription or an X-ray.

Communications are also a challenge, Dr. Clements added, with patchy cellphone reception and internet in remote parts of Australia making it hard for doctors to seek a second opinion. Instead, they rely heavily on what he terms the “friend network.”

That means finding a friend or acquaintance who works at a local hospital and establishing a referral or linkup service.

“In the Middle East, it didn’t matter if I was in the middle of nowhere in a desert, I could easily phone back to Australian colleagues and non-GP specialists,” Dr. Clements said.

Dr. Harding spent 18 months as the sole doctor at Australia’s base in Antarctica. He had, he said, “all the medications in the world,” plenty of instruments, an operating theater and even a dental chair. Despite the extreme isolation of the South Pole, he said it was easier to work as a doctor there than in remote Australia.

But Antarctica also poses unique challenges, such as the possibility of needing to practice medicine on oneself. In order to avoid this, Australian doctors deployed to Antarctica, for example, are required to have their appendixes removed.

Dr. Jeff Ayton, the chief medical officer of the Australian Antarctic Division, said that the policy was imposed after a treacherous evacuation in the 1950s of an Australian doctor with acute appendicitis requiring emergency surgery.

A decade later, a Russian doctor on an Antarctic mission who also contracted appendicitis enlisted a fellow expeditioner to hold up a mirror and proceeded to operate on himself, using only local anesthesia. There have also been cases of self-diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks and self-removal of breast lumps.

To forestall some medical emergencies, doctors may have to undergo other pre-emptive procedures to qualify for deployment. Wisdom teeth that could present a problem down the road must come out. A changing heart valve, which doctors would normally monitor, requires surgery. Under normal circumstances, the gall bladder wouldn’t be removed, but for a doctor in a remote setting — whether on an Antarctic or military deployment — it could be a preventative prerequisite.

Despite the many hurdles, threats and risks for remote doctors, Dr. Harding says the challenges make the job appealing.

And, he added, the setting makes him immune from the single most arduous part of the hospital system — its layer-upon-layer of hierarchical decision-making.

Dr. Harding compared it to someone having a broken hand visiting an emergency department, then being referred to an orthopedic doctor — who might say, “Oh, no, we just do the wrist” — and then on to a plastic surgeon — who says, “Where’s your boss, why can’t you deal with this?” — before being sent back to emergency.

Instead, Dr. Harding says each decision is his and his alone when working remotely.

“It’s quite liberating to be like, ‘I’m the best person here for the job’,” he said.

Now here are this week’s stories.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is back in Australia and for Anthony Albanese the job is done

Analysis WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is back in Australia and for Anthony Albanese the job is done

Julian assange salutes crowd

With a raised fist, Julian Assange signalled his defiance, as he took his first steps back on home soil last night.

For him, the fight for press freedom and a personal pardon will no doubt continue, now as a free man.

For Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the job is done. Getting Assange home was the outcome he sought. Ongoing arguments over the actions of WikiLeaks and the need for stronger press freedom protections are battles for others to fight.

The two spoke on the phone before Assange even disembarked from the plane. Albanese wanted to immediately welcome Assange home. A grateful Assange wanted to tell the prime minister he had "saved his life."

The phone call angered the opposition. Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham said it was "neither necessary nor appropriate" given Assange was "not wrongfully detained" and "chose to avoid facing justice".

A reminder not everyone wanted a red-carpet welcome home for this Australian citizen.

The prime minister, however, is keen to claim credit. Minutes after his call with Assange, he told a press conference this was the "culmination of careful, patient and determined advocacy" by his government.

While noting the "independence" of the US Justice Department and the "separation" of the political and judicial arms of American democracy, the prime minister didn't want anyone doubting the influence he brought to bear.

He's simultaneously arguing justice was blind to the building pressure from Australia, while also claiming credit for that pressure succeeding.

He wants to show respect for the justice system of Australia's most important ally, while also banking the political capital of securing this outcome.

Indeed, Assange, his family, supporters, and legal team openly acknowledge it would not have been achieved without the work of Albanese and his government.

This was a years' long effort, which involved leveraging the prime minister's relationship with President Biden, and utilising the skills of old political hands, Australian Ambassador Kevin Rudd in the United States, and High Commissioner Stephen Smith in the UK.

Albanese's support for Assange while sidestepping political landmines

But throughout it all, Anthony Albanese never defended Julian Assange's actions. Neither publicly, nor privately in his repeated appeals to Joe Biden.

Albanese has avoided weighing in on the rights or wrongs of publishing classified intelligence. Nor entered any debate on the US Espionage Act, its "extra-territorial" reach and the threat critics say it poses to journalists everywhere.

The prime minister has sidestepped these political landmines and instead stuck to his line that "enough is enough".

He's simply argued it's time to bring Assange home, without venturing a view on what this case represents about the balance between national security and press freedom.

The prime minister went out of his way to bring the WikiLeaks founder back. Yet he doesn't want to be seen as either pro or anti-Assange.

While views are clearly still mixed on Assange and his actions, Albanese formed the view long ago that most Australians agree the punishment has well and truly outweighed any crime.

That's a position Peter Dutton arrived at last year too, in what was a critical step. This week the opposition leader has neither welcomed nor criticised the return of Assange.

He's remained silent. Certainly no celebrations or congratulations.

Perhaps that's a reflection of the lukewarm reaction to this development amongst some of his colleagues. "Julian Assange is no hero of mine," Liberal frontbencher Jane Hume declared yesterday.

On the other end of the spectrum, is independent MP Andrew Wilkie, himself a former intelligence whistleblower, who worked harder and longer than any in the Australian parliament to secure the release of Assange.

They go back a long way.

Wilkie told Greg Jennet on Afternoon Briefing yesterday about meeting Assange in 2004, where the young man asked him about "developing a safe online portal for whistleblowers to ventilate their concerns".

A victory for 'Team Australia'

Whether seen as a hero or villain, support for bringing Assange home eventually stretched across the political spectrum like few other issues.

It ensured an unambiguous message was delivered to the United States — Australia wanted an end to this saga and its citizen set free. The matter had gone beyond any political dispute.

While Assange's lawyer Jennifer Robinson thanked the Australian PM "for his statesmanship, his principled leadership and his diplomacy, which made this outcome possible", his wife Stella last night thanked the opposition too. "It took all of them", she acknowledged.

This was a victory for "Team Australia".

It was not, however, the victory for press freedom his supporters had hoped for. If anything, it's the opposite.

As Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Western Australia Holly Cullen noted, the US Justice Department can now point to this case and say it's "prosecuted publishers of information under the Espionage Act and secured a conviction."

Jennifer Robinson agrees about this "chilling effect" on press freedom.

"The prosecution sets a dangerous precedent that should be of concern to journalists everywhere", she says.

"The US is seeking to exercise extra-territorial jurisdiction over all of you without giving you constitutional free speech protections."

Not that anyone begrudges Julian Assange accepting the guilty plea, given the ordeal he's been through.

As his father, John Shipton poignantly put it, the "human factor" comes into play. "You only get a bit of time here on the Earth to spend with your loved ones, that's all you get."

It's hard to argue with that.

Team Assange will continue the fight for press freedom protection. Stella Assange last night urged the world's media to unite behind the cause and support a pardon for her husband.

It's a fight the Australian government won't be joining.

Why Australia must bank the win and move on

The Albanese government will bank the win of Assange's return. Telling the US what it should do next is not on the agenda.

Aside from anything else, this would only invite the charge of hypocrisy, given Australia's own tough espionage laws and weak protections for whistleblowers and journalists.

The return of Assange clears away an irritant in the US-Australia relationship. And it's one less thing Australia would have to ask of Donald Trump, should he return to the White House.

Trump last month suggested he would give "very serious consideration" to pardoning Assange, but he's unpredictable and there's every chance this "deal-maker" would want something from Australia in return.

The uncertainty over the fate of the AUKUS deal under Trump is enough to worry about.
