NORDHAVN 63

Nordhavn 63.

The Nordhavn 63 is yet another iteration of one of our most proven hull forms, the  Nordhavn 55 that became one of the most popular and one of the most tested models we’ve produced. We extended the N55 and designed the 60-foot version to meet owners’ demands for increased space.

The 63 is actually an aft wheelhouse version of the N60 and its extended cockpit and boat deck. Looks-wise, however, this model retains the same salty feel that popularized the Nordhavn 62 . For those who love the N62 but have a width restriction at their slip, the N63 may be the perfect choice with its 18-foot beam. One of PAE’s greatest qualities is the ability of our Chief of Design, Jeff Leishman, and his engineering staff to continually conceive, design, evolve and introduce exciting new models.

While the 63 shares the same hull as the N55/60 designs, an entire new deck and engine room mold have been created for it, providing increased interior volume and added amenities.

For instance, just forward of the engine room door on the 55/60 sits the utility room with washer, dryer and freezer. On the 63, this area has been expanded to also include a crew quarters to port with fixed berth and pipe berth at the forward end. Another layout change is the centerline guest stateroom and four large opening port lights, both of which come standard.

Perhaps the greatest attribute of the N63 is realized while stepping through the cockpit door. Not only is this boat incredibly spacious, it exudes luxury. Standard on the 63 is the same raised paneled cherry wood that was ordered on hull #1 of the  Expedition Yachtfisher . And in the galley are (2) 700 Series Subzero refrigerator/freezers, as well as a U-Line freezer in the utility room, providing enough storage for extended traveling.

The main saloon is larger than both the 55 and 60 and offers two wrapping settees for entertaining with the galley on the same level. A unique hatch alcove on the port side of the Portuguese bridge allows light and air below to the galley; it sits just above the GE stainless steel LPG 5 burner cooktop and convection/ microwave oven.  Like all Nordhavns, granite countertops are beautifully crafted from your selection of our latest array of samples.

Two steps below the main salon you will find the master cabin near amidships on the port side. A walkaround bed facing athwart ships with two large ports creates a light and airy feeling in the cabin. The master head is designed to please the first mate. The space and furnishings in all areas are designed to be as welcoming as they are beautiful.

Opposite the master cabin on the starboard side is the day head which is convenient to the main saloon and is complete with shower and opening ports for light and air.

Forward to the bow is the guest cabin which rivals the master cabin with its port lights, a walkaround bed on center line, drawers and cedar lined closets for clothing storage.

A great view all around is provided from the wheel house which is just about the same height as the 55 but aft which gives added protection and that very cool look that has made the 62 such a popular model. A very handy off-watch cabin aft on the same level, keeps crew close to the action if needed and also provides a full head and shower on starboard. Just beyond the pilothouse is the open aft lounge deck with full 360 degree access to the Portuguese bridge. Port and starboard control pods on the Portuguese bridge are an option that can be added amidships for ease in docking.

The 63 is powered by the John Deere 6090AFM w/M2 rating of 225 HP @ 2,200 rpm, which is keel cooled to enable a dry stack exhaust. The transmission is an equally bullet proof ZF ZFW325 with a 4 to 1 reduction gear. The Nordhavn 63 has a fuel capacity of 2,500 gallons contained in four main tanks and one aluminum “day tank” holding 31 gallons which gravity feed from main wing tanks. As with all Nordhavns, the range is approximately 3,000 nm.

The large open foredeck can support a tender as large as 15-1/5′ and it comes standard with a Steelhead ES 1500 telescoping yacht crane with a 1500-lb. safe working load.

Another design cue taken from the N75 EYF is the updated dry stack which trails aft of the radar platform and forms the support for the dual tracking domes atop the pilothouse.

Building on Beloved: Nordhavn 63

  • By Peter Swanson
  • Updated: March 19, 2012

63 ft sailboat

Silver Spray

The great Canadian author George Fetherling compares running away on a tramp freighter to a religious pilgrimage, without the sacred destination. The author of Running Away to Sea writes that life aboard ship is “as much an escape from one place as a deliberate attempt to reach another.” One of the three great American fantasies, a freighter voyage lacks that soul-sucking downside, which, Fetherling says, dooms to failure those enthusiastic amateurs who engage in the other two — starting restaurants or bookstores. Quite the opposite, going to sea is liberating.

The builders of Nordhavn yachts get that. The vessels conceived on the drafting tables of Pacific Asian Enterprises have long been known for a gray, industrial look evocative of working trawlers. One model in particular, however, has addressed our freighter fantasies directly: the Nordhavn 62, with its aft superstructure and long foredeck. PAE has sold 38 N62s to ocean-roaming owners since the model’s first launch in 1993.

An adventurous Scotsman named Nigel McLeod, whose grandfather had been a sea captain, was ready to trade up from his Nordhavn 47 and hankered for an N62. “It was the freighter look with that big sweep of the bow. I liked the aft pilothouse, and I really liked the layout when you walked on the boat,” McLeod says. “My son was turning 17, and he and I wanted to go down to the Caribbean. If we got fed up with that, we’d go through the Panama Canal to the Pacific.”

Only one problem: The next boat had to fit through a canal that leads to McLeod’s “hurricane hole” of a berth at Hilton Head. The canal lock measures 20 feet wide, but is actually narrower because of its rubber fendering. The N62 has a beam of 19 feet, 10 inches. The Nordhavn 60, a more recent forward pilothouse design, was narrow enough to transit the lock, but McLeod was determined to have his freighter.

The design team of PAE partners Jim and Jeff Leishman brainstormed to find a solution, and the result offers us excellent insight into how the company develops new models. “We were doing all sorts of design gyrations to try to figure how we could get the 62 narrower, and it just got ridiculous,” Jeff Leishman says. “The 60 would fit, but he didn’t like the forward wheelhouse on the 60, so I thought, why don’t we just design an aft wheelhouse on that hull? He was interested so we drew something up, and that’s how it came about.” (The Nordhavn 60 was itself a customer-driven design. A buyer considering a Nordhavn 55 wanted more deck space, which meant stretching the hull.)

McLeod graciously allowed Yachting on board for a sea trial of the new N63 with Nordhavn commissioning manager John Hoffman. Of course I’d seen the renderings before arriving at the company’s base in Stuart, Florida, but when I saw Silver Spray for the first time I was nonetheless taken aback. She shared basics with the 62 — aft house, sweeping foredeck — but Silver Spray was much less the gray lady, positively stylish by comparison. And stepping through a watertight ship’s door into the salon makes for a dramatic transition to airy, cherry-wood elegance.

The boys at Nordhavn have confessed: The 63’s updated styling, particularly the superstructure, is the product of an enlightened design philosophy that takes into account female sensibilities and acknowledges that most of today’s yacht purchases are his and her decisions. The workmanship throughout the 63 is finished to contemporary megayacht standards, a level of workmanship that Nordhavn has applied to all of its models, regardless of size, ever since PAE began building boats more than 70 feet in length.

The accompanying photos describe the salon better than words, but the galley has features deserving emphasis. Rather than, say, occupying a corner of the salon, the galley is a defined space of its own — an elongated U-shape on the same level as the salon — that’s big enough for two people to move around in, but arranged to still keep everything within easy reach of the cook. Above the sink and counter, a panoramic pass-through encourages a social connection between those preparing a meal and those waiting to be fed.

Three steps down finds you among the accommodations, including two nearly equivalent staterooms with queen berths. Silver Spray ‘s master is just forward of amidships, with head and shower en suite and berth aligned athwartships. The guest stateroom is at the bow with en suite head and shower and is also accessible for day use. An alternative arrangement adds a third stateroom with a single berth but takes the second head out of the forward stateroom. These spaces are replete with drawers, shelves and lockers — too many to itemize.

63 ft sailboat

Two compartments lie below. One is “wine cellar” stowage accessed through a hatch forward. The other, at the bottom of stairs, is a laundry room with a second freezer and bunks for two crew. Here too is a door to the engine room, which is also accessed from the cockpit.

Opposite the galley to starboard, stairs lead to the N63’s spacious pilothouse with doors port and starboard to the lounge deck and Portuguese bridge. There is an L-shape settee and navigation station to port and a helm chair to the right of center. Behind the settee is a watch cabin with a double berth and an adjacent head and shower. Add up the berths, and Silver Spray sleeps eight with room on settees for a few more.

One of the most useful features of the N63’s “freighter” design is a foredeck that can handle a 17-foot RIB. A full-displacement vessel is a slow boat, and anyone who has ever cruised in one appreciates a fast tender, especially one big enough to carry the entire crew. To lift that tender over the side, the N63 comes equipped with a $40,000 Steelhead ES telescoping davit with a lifting capacity of 1,500 pounds.

The beating heart of the N63 is a 330-horsepower John Deere engine, which, in the best Nordhavn tradition, is keel-cooled to enable a dry-stack exhaust. With capacity for nearly 2,500 gallons of diesel distributed among four tanks, she will have a range of at least 3,000 miles at approximately 7 knots. Though a “get home” second engine is optional on the N63, a prudent mariner will think long and hard before going to sea without one. Silver Spray ‘s wing engine is a 65-horsepower Lugger diesel with a folding prop, capable of driving the vessel at 4 knots.

When I took the helm, Nordhavn’s John Hoffman suggested I take my hands off the wheel to see what would happen: nothing —_ Silver Spray_ tracked straight, as if on autopilot. Hoffman, who has delivered more than 50 Nordhavns, says the N63 is unique. “I don’t know why it is, but she steers on a line,” he says. Of course, the Leishmans knew the N63 would be a better sea boat than the old 62. Like all recent Nordhavn designs, the 63 carries her beam aft with an underwater shape that flattens near the stern. Compare that with the sailboat-type lines of the N62 hull. “With fuller stern sections, you get a bigger lazarette and bigger load-carrying capacity. You get a better pitch motion,” Jim Leishman says.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the aft superstructure on top of those wide haunches had anything to do with the boat’s fine tracking. For certain, motoryachts with their “sail area” aft swing less at anchor than boats with equivalent windage forward, but Leishman doubts windage is much of a factor under way.

At the risk of perpetuating the cultural stereotype that Scots are a frugal lot, the N63 had another factor in its favor. It cost less than a $2.2 million Nordhavn 62. Built at Nordhavn’s South Coast factory in Xiamen, China, the price tag for Hull No. 1 of the N63 was well under $2 million. And despite the worldwide economic downturn, four more are being built as you read this — all because one adventurous, discriminating buyer needed to squeeze through a lock.

Test Conditions : Speeds were measured by GPS in the Straits of Florida off Juno Beach, Florida, with one-foot seas and 5- to 7-knot winds, with a 2/3 load of fuel, a full load of water and two people on board. Fuel consumption was measured by the electronic engine-monitoring system. Test conditions and performance numbers are provided by Nordhavn.

The New 4,000 HP Lamborghini 63 Is a Cruiser That Will Make Your Supercar Jealous

The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 has many traits from the supercar brand.

For supercar addicts, Lamborghini ’s Raging Bull badge has a prestige value that surpasses just about every other automotive marque. Who can forget the iconic Miura   and   Countach , for example, or fail to recognize the outrageously aggressive styling and high-pitched roar of a 12-cylinder Aventador when it looks like a blurred shadow passing on the highway?

The company has long produced big-block marine engines for offshore powerboat racing, but in 2020, it announced a collaboration with Tecnomar, part of The Italian Sea Group, to transpose the Lamborghini spirit into a ferociously styled, high-speed motoryacht.

The first Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 (the 63 references the yacht’s length in feet and Lamborghini’s 1963 foundation) is now in the water. Robb Report was able to experience the yacht’s thrilling performance firsthand during an invitation-only event at Tecnomar’s Tuscany-based shipyard.

“What we didn’t want was to simply have a car on the water,” said Mitja Borkert, director of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile. “It would have been very naive to just take the car shape and put it on top of a hull. It had to be supremely clean and classy.”

”One of the biggest challenges was maintaining a very low profile like the cars, because on a yacht you need a certain amount of headroom for comfort,” adds Gian Marco Campanino, art director at The Italian Sea Group. “It was a balance between making everything as light and sleek as possible, but also robust and vibration free.”

A trademark Lamborghini motif is the distinctive hexagonal shape of its supercars when viewed from the front or rear. This has been subtly reproduced in the angled hull windows and open transom of the yacht.

The first Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 has all the features of the famed supercar marque.

Despite the low exterior profile, the interior is wide open and filled with natural light.  Courtesy Italian Sea Group

Other features on the 63 reference specific Lamborghini models: The two leather pilot seats are adapted versions of those in the Huracan Evo with Sparco racing seatbelts; the helm is based on the steering wheel of the Aventador (minus the paddle shifts and air bag); and the verde gea paint job is the same as the new limited-series Siàn FKP 37 , powered by hybrid technology. Even the dashboard graphics and aviation-style cover on the start/stop buttons are the same as the cars.

While the hull is made of fiberglass for strength, the carbon-fiber superstructure is designed to keep the weight down and center of gravity low. Under the aft sunpad are a pair of gleaming MAN V12 diesel engines, 2,000 hp each.

When combined with a slippery hull form and surface drives, they provide a top speed in excess of 60 knots, making this 63-footer one of the fastest yachts in her class. At a cruising speed of 40 to 45 knots, she burns around 100 gallons of fuel per hour for a range of 360 nautical miles.

The first Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 has all the features of the famed supercar marque.

High speed usually means a bumpy ride, yet despite a stiff breeze that was kicking up three-foot waves during a test run, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 ran close to her redline speed, with no slamming and minimal vibration. She also proved a very dry boat: at the end of the trial there was hardly a drop of seawater on the windshield.

The 63 was designed to be a fast day boat or weekend cruiser. Behind the helm is a dinette and galley station, pop-up television and rear sunpad. Belowdecks is a forward master suite and guest cabin with twin single berths, both with sporty, carbon-looking trim and gray-and-yellow leather upholstery that carries Lamborghini’s automotive style to the water.

With a base price of about $3.5 million, the performance yacht is aimed at Lamborghini’s existing client base. The Italian Sea Group was reluctant to say exactly how many units have been sold to date. It did confirm, however, that available build slots through 2022 have already been reserved.

Captain: Hugh O'Brien

Capt. Hugh O'Brien - Born in England and then lived in more than a dozen countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Now a permanent US Resident living in the Caribbean & Florida, predominantly in the US and British Virgin Islands. Hugh started competitive sailing and ocean racing in the UK & France in 1987 (36 years of ocean sailing experience). He com¬pleted his intensive Royal Yachting Association (RYA) YachtMaster 500 Ton Sail & Power Commercial License in 2002 at the presti¬gious UK Sailing Academy and worked as a Captain & Chef in commercial yachting in the Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, USA & Japan. Hugh also ran 5 Star Sailing with a 50 ft Beneteau Sloop as a Captain Chef in the Virgin Islands from 2007-2011. A 20-year career in Marketing & Sales for American IT & Database companies saw Hugh working in some 20 countries and heading up operations in Europe, US, Asia & Latin America. From 2018-2022, Captain Hugh owned and operated Ocean Star 60, a 60 ft Beneteau sloop. Having worked with Chef Vivi on Ocean Star 60, they have since become partners in Serena Yacht Charters, LLC, and operate the 63-ft sloop Yacht Serena, their new Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62. Yacht Serena is the Hull #1 of Beneteau’s ultimate Oceanis Yacht cruiser series and has many extras, including a carbon fibre Code 0 racing sail. Hugh attended culinary classes and schools in France, Japan and America, and specializes in Mediterranean, Latin American and Asian fresh food dishes with premium ingredients. Hugh is a light social drinker but nonsmoker, no drugs, no criminal record, clean licenses and a broad sense of humor especially when trying to catch fish! Vivianne Swietelsky Chef/First Mate Ocean Star Vivianne, or “Chef Vivi” is based in Water Island, USVI and Coconut Grove, Miami. She is known for her authentic interpretations of the world’s great cuisines – American, Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, and Latin American, and her signature fusion MediterrAsian cuisine. She is also makes amazing desserts and is an inspired cocktail mixologist. For as far back as she can remember, Chef Vivi has been passionate about food and the artistry of its preparation. Born in the U.S. to an Italian father and a Venezuelan mother, she has travelled all over the world and lived in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Mexico, and the Caribbean and is fluent in five languages. Her family life revolved around the enjoyment of great food and her mother taught her to cook instinctually, from the heart. Chef Vivi built upon this foundation and has expanded her culinary knowledge and skills over the years. Chef Vivi attended different culinary schools around the world and studied Hospitality Management at the Florida International Universi¬ty’s School of Hospitality & Tourism. She has been a restaurant Pastry Chef, owned her own upscale Miami catering company, “Truffles Catering”, and worked as Private Chef for HNWI in both private homes and on charter yachts. Another one of Chef Vivi’s passions is sailing, and she has enjoyed working on sailboats around the world. She also has an ASA Certificate for Offshore Sailing gained in the U.S. Virgin Islands and has owned and operated several Beneteau yachts. After working as Yacht Chef with Captain Hugh on Ocean Star 60, Vivianne and Hugh became partners in 2023 and now operate Serena Yacht Charters, LLC on their beautiful 63-ft Beneteau sloop, Yacht Serena. Yacht Serena is a very special yacht: she is the Hull #1 of Beneteau’s ultimate luxury Oceanis Yacht 62 cruiser series. Vivianne has enjoyed refitting Yacht Serena with many upscale amenities, including FRETTE sheets and towels, Lanvin products, and Bose sound systems in every cabin. What Vivianne enjoys the most about being a Private Yacht Chef is the daily interaction with her guests and the pleasure of creating wonderful memories for them. She really loves the feeling of serving wonderful food, drinks, and delivering excellent service on gorgeous Yacht Serena. Her and Captain Hugh’s motto about their guests is, “it’s all about you, all the time”. Nothing matters more to them than delivering a five-star experience and exceeding even the highest expectations.

HATTERAS YACHTS GT63

photo of Hatteras Yachts GT63

The Hatteras GT63 is a classic Carolina-style convertible sportfish accented by an aggressive bow flare and low foredeck, but no one is building this style of tournament-ready in a more modern and innovative fashion other than Hatteras. The new GT-series from Hatteras has caught everyone’s attention with its speed, Hatteras-renown durability, ‘fish-ability’, and interiors that take cues from the motor yacht range. The Hatteras GT63 is both fishing machine and comfortable cruising boat, all while looking classically Carolina-esque.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Make Hatteras Yachts
  • Model Hatteras Sportfish
  • Length Overall 63' 10
  • Max Draft 5'
  • Displacement 102,000 Lbs.
  • Water Capacity 270 Gal.
  • Fuel Capacity 1,900 Gal.

Building a tough, durable boat that is able to exceed speeds of 40-knots requires ingenuity and innovative techniques that the factory in New Bern, North Carolina prides itself on. The hull is balsa core, except for the bottom which is solid fiberglass. While this does add some weight, it also makes the bottom much stronger than other sportfish in its same size range. The hull above the waterline uses a closed cell foam core with a 60% glass to resin ratio which is vacuum bagged to remove all air from the foam. The result is a stronger, lighter deck and hull which increases durability and performance. Additionally, Hatteras designed the props to fit into a recessed pocket in the hull which run completely back to the transom. Because of this, the GT63 has only a 5-foot draft which is shallower than most other 60-foot sportfish.

The cockpit of the Hatteras GT63 is an angler’s dream with many toys hidden in compartments and drawers. The 173 square foot cockpit has a seemingly endless amount of storage options for rods, gaffs, and tackle all within reach, as well as a drop down remote control station. Other fishing features include an optional transom livewell, Eskimo ice machine, and lots of insulated fishboxes. And no Hatteras sportfish would be complete without the observation mezzanine. Guests on board will enjoy sitting in the shade and air conditioning on the comfortable cushions while watching the action in the cockpit.

The salon and galley are a remarkable living space that is benefited from the GT63’s 20-foot beam and extra wide windows. The L-shaped leather sofa provides a comfortable place for guests to sit and watch the flatscreen television. The U-shaped settee sits around a teak dining table that fits five adults or more if chairs are brought up. This layout combines the living and dining spaces of both rooms wonderfully so no one ever feels left out of the conversation. The galley is beautifully designed and accented with granite countertops and lots of refrigeration, storage, and cooking amenities. Moving forward through this space is the start of the staterooms. The Hatteras GT63 has the option for either three or four staterooms on board with three heads. The master suite has a queen-sized berth with ample storage throughout and its own private head with shower stall. Additional guest staterooms are designed for another queen-sized berth in the VIP or over—under bunks in the other staterooms. There is an additional galley on the lower level as well for the crew quarters. A freighter ship in Lake Superior collided with something underwater, Coast Guards says

The U.S. Coast Guard says a freighter in Lake Superior has hit something underwater and started taking on water

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- A freighter in Lake Superior hit something underwater on Saturday and started taking on water, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Great Lakes district received reports about 6:53 a.m. that a 689-foot-long (210-meter-long) ship called the Michipicoten had collided with something about 35 miles (56 kilometers) southwest of Isle Royale, which is part of the state of Michigan. The ship was carrying taconite, which is a low-grade iron ore, and had 22 people aboard.

Water pumps onboard began displacing water, authorities said, and there were no signs that anything spilled from the ship. By 9:15 a.m., water pumps had reduced the listing of the freighter from 15 degrees to 5 degrees, the Coast Guard said.

Helicopter and boat crews were responding, the Coast Guard said.

Around 12:30 p. m. the Coast Guard said half of the people on board had been evacuated from the vessel for safety. The ship was on its way to a port for inspection and repairs.

Authorities say the cause of the collision will be investigated.

The collision occurred in the northwest part of the lake, which straddles the U.S.-Canadian border and is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

  6. Nordhavn 63 Boat Review

Like all recent Nordhavn designs, the 63 carries her beam aft with an underwater shape that flattens near the stern. Compare that with the sailboat-type lines of the N62 hull. "With fuller stern sections, you get a bigger lazarette and bigger load-carrying capacity. You get a better pitch motion," Jim Leishman says.
