The Echo 12 is a Canadian rowboat, motorboat and sailing dinghy that was first built in 1979. [1] [2]

The Echo 12 is a development of the West German Koralle Junior. [1] [3]

The design is built by C&L Boatworks in Belleville, Ontario and was at one time also built by Skene Boats of Gloucester, Ontario, both located in Canada . The design remains in production by C&L. [1] [2] [4] [5] [6]

The Echo 12 is a recreational sailboat , built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim. For sailing it has a fractional sloop rig, with aluminum spars, a raked stem, a plumb transom , a transom-hung, kick-up rudder made from mahogany , controlled by a tiller and a retractable mahogany daggerboard. It displaces 140 lb (64 kg), has a bow storage compartment and may be fitted with a whisker pole. The mainsheet is mounted mid-boom to a block on the cockpit deck. [1] [2]

The boat has a draft of 1.50 ft (0.46 m) with the daggerboard extended and 0.33 ft (0.10 m) with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer or car roof rack . The mast is a two-piece design to allow it to be disassembled for car-top transport. [1] [2]

The boat has a motor-mount pad and can be fitted with an outboard motor of up to 5 hp (4 kW). It also was factory-delivered with an athwartships seat and oarlocks for rowing . [1]

For racing the design is usually crewed by two sailors. [2]

Operational history

In a 1994 review Richard Sherwood wrote, "a straightforward beginner's boat, the Echo has been designed for versatility and may also be rowed or powered (with a maximum of five-horsepower outboard). Oarlock sockets are built in, and there is a pad for the motor. A rowing seat runs athwartship." [2]

My five kolibris, these are great little boats; a little fragile around rocks, but fast and fun to sail click on the thumbprints below for details.

echo 12 sailboat

Kolibri # 1 (Kolibri is German for hummingbird)

The year was 1984. i was killing time in a hardware store while getting broken windows repaired. an ad on the store's bulletin board caught my eye and i stopped for a closer look. someone wanted to sell a 12' "kolibri" sailboat for only $250. it even had a car-top loading device and dolly. i looked, bought and was hooked on sailing for life.

echo 12 sailboat

The boat had no trailer, so I bought another small boat with a trailer and sold the boat for what I paid for both.

echo 12 sailboat

Kolibri # 2

About ten years later, i found an orange kolibri that had hardly been used. i sold the yellow boat for twice what i paid for it. for 18 years, my wife, our children and grandchildren enjoyed sailing our kolibri..

echo 12 sailboat

It was not a happy day in 2002 when I finally sold our little "Hummingbird," but we were retiring to the USA and couldn't take it with us. After settling in America, I began looking for another Kolibri. The German-built Kolibri was sold in America for a number of years, sometimes under the name "Koralle Jr." but the few that I found on the Internet were too far away. Glenmore Boats of Canada continued making the Kolibri with a few changes and another Canadian company built the "Echo," which is nearly identical, but a new boat was was not in my budget. More recently I have learned of a "Koralle II Sunsail" and a "Freedom Seeker 12" that were apparently from the same mold.

I owned several canoes and sailboats (see other tabs), but it was four years before i finally found another kolibri. on july 29, 2007, i saw an ad on craigslist for a koralle jr. located just across the delaware river in philadelphia. i responded immediately and on july 31, i towed my trophy home, when the former owner heard that i was "downsizing" and had a mutineer 15 for sale, he came and bought it. here are photos of both boats in our driveway..

echo 12 sailboat

The boat had been stored outside without protection, so the seat and transom were badly weathered. The boat had been used primarily as a rowboat, however, and the centerboard, rudder and sails were in near new condition. I made a mahogany transom and seat, after which I took it for a sail. One of the former owners had repaired several cracks in the floor of the boat, but he apparently was not experienced in such repairs. I tightened the shrouds and in a brisk breeze, the floor suddenly cracked around the mast step. Before I could get to shore, the mast dropped through the bottom of the boat! I have photos of the damage and repairs on another page if you are interested: Kolibri Repair The photos below show the boat after repairs.

echo 12 sailboat

This boat is the same color as the second Kolibri that I owned in Austria, but that one had blue stripes on the mainsail. I bought it from the original owner with the original bill of sale and owners manual. He sold a larger sailboat in 1972 and bought the Kolibri, intending to purchase a trailer for it. That never happened and the Kolibri spent the next 36 years stored in his garage.

echo 12 sailboat

I sailed this boat once but used the rudder from my red Kolibri rather than the brand new one that came with this boat. I sold Kolibri #4 in September, 2009 with a nice aluminum trailer for $1600.  The owner later sold it and moved up to a larger vessel.

echo 12 sailboat

Kolibri #5 In May, 2010, someone wrote and asked if I was interested in a Kolibri. It needed much work but the rigging was mostly there. I went and picked it up of course! When new, it was like Kolibri #2 and #4, but this one is beyond repair! I sold the dagger, rudder and sails. I will use the mast and boom on another boat.

In summer, 2014, someone in canada gave me the complete rigging for a kolibri i already know where i can use most of the parts, but if someone gives me a good kolibri hull i may change my mind, other boats built by atlanta boats in germany atlanta boat works, germany (word document about the history), the flamingo 20, the 440 (15 ft) no photo - may be one of the varios the vario i, ii, iii and s models, whereby the "s" may be the vario i someone in california sent photos of this unknown atlanta 16.4' boat with the atlanta hummingbird (kolibri) and crown logo plus roman numeral v (5 meters). if anyone has more information, please send it to [email protected] the 550 (18 ft) sketch shown below, the koralle 15 (not to be confused with the koralle jr.) was only sold in europe, but this one is located in california., the mungo 10.

need a tiller/extension for an echo

Hi. Just registered today. I bought a used echo 12' sailboat from craigslist for my son's birthday. The tiller is missing. I'd like to get another. Does anyone know if I have to get a tiller from the manufacturer of the Echo or can any tiller be modified for this small sailboat? Thanks for your help. jerry

CalebD

I found this website searching for 'Echo 12 sailboat': http://vaxxine.com/clsailboats/pricelist.htm They do not list a replacement tiller but perhaps you can contact the company in Ontario. Interestingly, a new CL Echo 12 seems to sell for over $5K. Looks like a fun boat. I bet you could fashion or fabricate your own tiller from wood and some hardware for far less then what a replacement might cost. Do you have any photos of the rudder that show the tiller attachment point?

Apparently I do not know how to use a scroll bar. Tiller replacement found and at $96 will not break the bank. Thanks Joe for paying attention!

Koralle JR. (Kolibri)

Koralle JR. (Kolibri) is a 11 ′ 10 ″ / 3.6 m monohull sailboat built by Atlanta Bootsbau starting in 1970.

Drawing of Koralle JR. (Kolibri)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The KORALLE JR. was built in Germany and exported to US as (KOLIBRI = Hummingbird ??) The KOLIBRI II was built by Glenmore Sailboats Ltd. of Canada. Another boat, probably of the same design, is the ECHO 12, built in Canada. A utility dinghy that can be rowed and accept a small outboard. This record was previously listed as KOLIBRI (KORALLE JR.).

How long do sails last on a sailboat?

Sailboat owners know that sails are crucial to their vessel’s performance. However, sails can be costly investments. The question of how long they will last is a valid concern that every sailor must be aware of. Sailmaker North Sails conducted a study and found that “charter fleets expect 2-3 years of use from basic woven polyester sails.” This essentially means that the typical lifespan of these sails is about 1,500 to 2,500 sailing hours. After reaching the 2,000-hour threshold, these sails are generally considered worn out.

It is important to note that the longevity of sails depends on various factors. Three primary variables are the sail’s quality, usage frequency, and maintenance. Sails made with high-quality materials tend to last longer than their budget counterparts. If a sailboat spends most of its time docked, then its sails won’t undergo as much wear and tear, contributing to a longer lifespan. Additionally, proper sail maintenance, such as regular cleaning and storage in a dry place, will help extend the life of the sails.

Many sailors will note that their sails can last much longer than the industry-established standards mentioned above. By prioritizing quality, careful usage, and diligent maintenance, some owners have reported keeping their sails for five, ten, or even fifteen years without significant degradation. However, it is crucial to remain vigilant and inspect your sails regularly for signs of wear or damage to minimize the possibility of encountering a costly and inconvenient breakdown at sea.

In conclusion, sailing enthusiasts can expect their basic woven polyester sails to last between 2-3 years before they start to deteriorate. However, how long a sail will last can vary widely based on quality, usage frequency, and maintenance.

In conclusion, the EC 12 RC sailboat is an excellent choice for experienced sailors and beginners looking for an exciting hobby. By owning this one-design class sailboat, people can join regattas and meet new friends from all around the world. Amazon Echo Dot is perfect for the sailboat

I’ve had an Amazon Echo at home for some time and love it. It is used mostly for controlling our Philips Hue lighting (15 different zones/lights) and our Sonos sound system, plus a bunch of scenarios and other home automation niceties. I’ve been wanting an Echo Dot for Grace but missed out on the original release. I was able to snag one recently, and have it doing a few things on the boat, with some cool plans for the future.

Echo Dot box

I know several people who have the full sized Echo on their boat, but it requires AC power which is something I wanted to avoid while away from the dock. Plus it is much bigger and has larger speakers which I didn’t need.

The USB port

The Echo Dot runs off of USB, is super tiny, and pairs with Bluetooth speakers easily.

The size is nice, but USB power is the real reason I wanted the Dot. I have BlueSea USB outlets in several places around the boat that are always on. This will allow for easy mounting and continuous power whether we’re at the dock or underway. I’m also considering using a DC-DC buck converter which can take a range of input voltages, and output a constant 5V for USB connectivity/power and wiring it in permanently.

Echo answering my query on Grace

The Dot easily connected to my Fusion stereo, and because I had a full size Echo already, my Spotify, Pandora and other music accounts were already setup and ready to use. Instead of having someone’s cell phone paired with the stereo, now we can all yell our favorite music requests at Alexa and hear them throughout the boat. When the stereo is off, the Dot’s built in speaker is good enough even while the engine is on, but only down below.

This solves the dual problem of a cell phone battery draining quickly while playing music, and also having it inevitably out at the cockpit to control the music. We have a charging port in the cockpit, but Bluetooth seems to be flaky depending on the various electronics that are on. The other issue is having your cell phone in the cockpit to begin with from a safety and waterproofing perspective.

Phase 2 is to use IFTTT and glue on my on-board Linux and Windows systems to do a few more interesting things:

Alarms from NMEA 2000 bus – using the data from SignalK / iKommunicate and potentially canbus, writing some code to set alarms and thresholds.  When one is tripped, have something sent to IFTTT so that the Dot alerts us to a problem audibly.  An example could be a low battery voltage, which the Dot could say “Low battery voltage on house bank, please review”.

Control of lighting – I’d like to control my ambient LED cabin lights via the Dot. There’s a wifi-based gateway that can be paired with the RF receivers and should allow me to write some glue on my on-board Linux machine to control them.

Anchor Watch – this could be driven by some of the same work as the alarms above, but I want it to be as robust as possible. Potentially looking at spitting GPS data onto the WiFi network that the Echo could consume and monitor, along with a geofence or other limiting factor.

I’m sure there are a ton of other things to be done that would enable alerts or control via voice.  I’m looking forward to experimenting more with the Dot on the boat.
