Hargrave Yachts Brokerage & Charter Fort Lauderdale

Our company was originally known as the top yacht design firm in America when, under the direction of legendary designer Jack Hargrave, the company played an important role in the success of companies like Hatteras, Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic & Halmatic to name just a few.

In 1997, shortly after legendary designer Jack Hargrave passed away, Michael Joyce returned to the company after an absence of twenty years to take over as president and CEO. Recognizing that Hargrave was far more than a design office, Joyce explained to Boating Industry International Magazine that Jack's name was in fact a “brand name” and outlined his plans to begin construction of luxury yachts under the Hargrave banner.

Bringing the Hargrave name into the future first required an admission that the yachting industry had changed. The most successful builders now had their own in-house design and engineering department, and the role of the independent naval architect was changing. Joyce, who had spent his career in the sales, service and distribution side of business, realized that if Hargrave was going to play a key role in the future of the industry, they would have to do it on their own and could no longer rely on builders for their future business.

“In our company we measure our design objectives against Jack Hargrave's dictum that, at the end of the day, the boat has to perform at sea. Everything else in the design process needs to bend to that single principle. It's the right way to do it, and at Hargrave, it's the only way to do it,” said Mr. Joyce.

Michael Joyce, head of Hargrave Custom Yachts, has always been an innovator. Embracing the changing times and the technological miracles of our age, he has been able to employ technology without succumbing to it. As a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for the finest traditions in yachting and thirty years experience as a CEO in the industry, he knew it was the right time for a truly custom yacht in the 80_ - 100_ size range with realistic pricing to enter the market.

His use of computer-aided design and contemporary modes of communication helped bring the Hargrave Company into the 21st Century. Mr. Joyce stated, “Today, demanding buyers customize everything they purchase in life. The computer industry builds computers to order, based on each individual customer's specifications, heck, even Wendy's makes hamburgers to order so why not yachts?”

Michael Joyce has a way of bringing the best of yesterday and today together for a new and better tomorrow. Hargrave has grown in only a few short years to be recognized as a reputable yacht designer, builder and distributor of world-class yachts. We are now well past our initial goal of 50 orders since starting our construction program, we average fourteen to seventeen yachts under construction at one time, and have nine all new models going through development and prototyping at the Hargrave Concept Studio. M/Y Renaissance is a 116-feet full walk-around Hargrave Yacht that was launched in 2016. She has a Jack Sarin performance hull, C32 Caterpillar main engines, and is equipped with At-Rest and underway stabilizers. The yacht features an interior design by Yacht Interiors by Shelley, with a contemporary Décor that boasts timeless furnishings, neutral carpeting, and soft recessed lighting.

The yacht has five staterooms, including an on-deck master. The salon has a generous lounge with a sofa, occasional chairs, coffee tables, and entertainment system. Forward of the salon is the formal dining area, which is separated from the lounge by a partial divider wall with glass etching. Large windows surround the space, and forward to the Hallway is a well-appointed day head/powder room.

Exterior living aboard the Renaissance spans two decks. The shaded aft deck is adjacent to the salon and features an al fresco dining option, seating, and bar area. The bow has an intimate seating area with a cocktail table, perfect for guests seeking a place to read a book or have unrestricted views of the unique ports, coves, and anchorages that the Renaissance can take you to, thanks to her shallow draft of 5 feet and 11 inches.

The sundeck is an excellent space for entertaining and socializing, with an al fresco dining area, large wet bar with stools, a deluxe Jacuzzi, large sun pad, cocktail table, chaise lounges, and a hardtop for shade. On the starboard side is the "Second Galley" of the yacht with a state-of-the-art gas-operated barbecue station with two grills and double Sub Zero refrigeration/freezers.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

• Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

Hargrave 105 Superyacht Review

“I love my Hargraves because of one thing,” says a serial Hargrave owner on his third yacht. “Mike Joyce never says no.”

Joyce is the CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts , whose latest 105, Irresistible , exemplifies numerous ways the builder tailors its designs to what each owner wants.

Irresistible , for instance, has a raised pilothouse, creating an all-weather backup to the flybridge helm. The bridge is open, but it’s shaded by the fiberglass hardtop, rather than having a sky lounge on board. That’s already a lot of personalization based on the starting point of a new Jack Sarin-designed hull that tops out at 21 knots and cruises at 18 knots. In addition, this owner was planning 1,000-nautical-mile voyages, so he opted for twin 1,600 hp Caterpillar C32 Acert diesels. Irresistible reportedly has a 2,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. Based on my time aboard, I can report that the hull is also comfortable in Gulf Stream lumps.

The yacht has a widebody design, so the salon spans the full 23-foot beam, allowing for a formal dining area forward and an entertainment space aft, all with 7-foot-2-inch headroom. The salon connects through oversize sliding doors to the aft deck, where alfresco dining and lounges await.

The country-kitchen-style galley—a design feature on many Hargraves—is forward with seating for guests. The marble countertop stretches 7 feet, 6 inches for meal prep and plating.

The pilothouse is likely to be a gathering place underway and is fitted out with an L-shaped settee and table, plus an office for the skipper.

Curving stairs from the salon lead to the full-beam owner’s suite, which has a California king berth (6-by-7 feet) and an 11-foot walk-in closet more than 4 feet wide—plus two more closets. The feeling is that of a liveaboard second home. Off the foyer are two guest staterooms, one with twin berths that slide together and the other with a queen.

There is a VIP stateroom forward, with stairs from the galley. The VIP has a queen-size berth and, like the other staterooms, an en suite head with a shower large enough that Joyce notes with a grin, “You can pick up dropped soap.”

The bridge is likely to be an alfresco salon for entertaining, with a dining table, a bar with four stools and space aft for a hot tub. This still leaves room for a pair of PWC or a tender launched via the Quicklift 2,000-pound hydraulic crane.

Irresistible’s crew quarters are abaft the engine room. The captain has a double berth in a private cabin with an en suite head, while two crewmembers are in another cabin, also en suite, where, at 40 inches, the berths are wider than twins. There’s also a crew mess area with a galley and dinette/lounge.

Speaking of crew, they will have space in the engine room to maneuver around the big Cat diesels and the pair of 38 kW Northern Lights gensets. There are full diamond-plate walkways like the ones aboard yachts 30 feet longer. Built to DNV and American Boat and Yacht Council specifications, the yacht’s systems are readily accessible and labeled. Any exposed fiberglass clearly shows the yard’s expertise in laminating the foam-cored hull and superstructure.

Irresistible was built with a 13-page list of standard equipment ranging from triple Glendinning shore-power cords to Naiad stabilizers and bow thruster to a decor from Yacht Interiors by Shelley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
