The Surprising Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe for the Brand’s 75th Anniversary

What better way to celebrate an anniversary with friends than by offering them a tourbillon to enjoy.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe

Yema, the French watchmaker , has a history and a notable presence in the world of horology. Established in 1948, Yema is known for its diverse range of timepieces, crafted for various purposes, from diving to racing and aviation . One of the distinctive aspects of Yema watches is their fusion of functionality and style. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Yema introduces the Yachtingraf model, incorporating the intricate craftsmanship of a tourbillon with the functionality of a tide complication, catering to those who appreciate both technical innovation and practical utility.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe harmoniously merges sportiness and elegance in its case design, predominantly brushed for a well-balanced aesthetic. With a water resistance of up to 100m, the case comes in steel or bronze, measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 12.3mm thick (14.5mm with the double-domed 2.20mm high sapphire crystal). The unidirectional rotating bezel is equipped with a sapphire crystal insert, graduated in 5-minute increments, and a triangular luminescent marker at 12 o’clock adds a touch of sophistication. The caseback is transparent to demonstrate the Tourbillon Maréographe movement’s architecture and finish.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

The black dial features a sunray finish and Super-LumiNova-coated applied indices. Indices, hands, and other elements are presented in matching colours depending on the case material. The Maréographe complication is positioned above the centre and introduces blue and red hues, with a small hand adorned with Yema’s logo indicating tide cycles. This hand points to high and low tides, making gradual half-revolutions every 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 7.89 seconds, completing a full circle rotation in approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes, passing Descendante – Marée – Montante indications. The tidal cycles, linked to the Moon’s gravitational forces during its rotation around the Earth, are precisely displayed by integrating lunar time to synchronize tides with local time.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe - 6

At 6 o’clock, the 60-second tourbillon of the Calibre Manufacture Morteau 30 (CMM.30) takes centre stage, embodying the same robustness that defines the timepiece. Designed by Olivier Mory, a French movement developer in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this calibre incorporates non-magnetic components, such as a non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass made in gold, and micro-components manufactured with LiGA technology. This ensures the movement can withstand electromagnetic exposure up to 2,000 Gauss.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

The tourbillon cage bridge, free-sprung balance wheel, and shock absorbers make the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and accelerations up to 5,000 Gs. Adjusted in 6 positions, the CMM.30 guarantees near-chronometer accuracy between –3 and +7 seconds per day, all powered by a single barrel providing 105 hours of reserve. Among other achievements, Olivier Mory was responsible for developing a tourbillon-equipped calibre for the BA111OD brand, offering Swiss-made tourbillon watches at very attractive prices.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

So, it is no surprise that the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is priced at EUR 9,990 . Yema will produce steel and bronze editions limited to 75 numbered timepieces each. The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is worn on a comfortable strap made from premium rubber, closed by a steel or bronze folding clasp, depending on the case material. Celebrating 75 years in business, French watchmakers Yema have recently released their Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe, a tribute to classic design and Franco-Swiss watchmaking mastery. Don’t let the plain black and steel (or bronze) design fool you – this watch is anything but simple. Yema has incorporated a balance between yachting heritage design and function to show what this watch is capable of – while also doing it with a certain je nais sais quoi , courtesy of a somewhat unexpected tourbillon caliber. The tourbillon is visible at the 6 o’clock mark, giving one an interior look into the precision mechanisms of this masterpiece. Opposite that, at the 12 hour, the Maréographe has a unique lunar time complication with a display of tide cycles, complete with a decorative bearing the traditional Yema “Y” logo. While maybe not part of your day-to-day needs, it’s nonetheless a showing of Yema’s technical capabilities and a bit of a unique offering for an important anniversary.

Yachtingraph iconic dial

The dial takes inspiration from the aesthetic codes of the 1970’s Yachtingraf iconic model. It features a sunray black finish with applied markers coated with Super-LumiNova and a colorful Maréographe register reminiscent of the regatta-style Yachtingraf vintage model completed with a tides indicator in the form of a small hand gracefully decorated with YEMA’s logo. The 60-second tourbillon boasts a mesmerizing kinetic spectacle for the wearer as it beats and turns against the partially open dial.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

The 20mm lug allows a wide choice of bracelets. The transparent exhibition caseback reveals the beating heart, it shows off the distinctive architecture of the CMM.30 tourbillon caliber creating a fascinating experience for the true enthusiast. The caseback outer ring is engraved with a unique Limited Edition number (XX/75) and a serial number (XXX-XXX).

FKM Viton® rubber bracelet

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Tourbillion calibre

Invented by French horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, the tourbillon is an advanced regulating organ present in certain high-end mechanical watches, intended to improve the precision of timepieces. It consists of a rotating cage containing the balance wheel and its hairspring, the escape wheel, the lever and the second wheel which drives it. The cage rotates 360 degrees every 60 seconds, which counteracts the effects of gravity and reduces any positional errors of accuracy. The tourbillon embodies watchmaking know-how, only a few Manufactures master the creation of this caliber masterpiece.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

Own design locally manufactured

The Calibre Manufacture Morteau 30 (CMM.30) tourbillon unique’s design offers high performance thanks to its clever architecture and high-quality Franco-Swiss components. Entirely designed and developed by Olivier Mory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the regulating organs are manufactured in Switzerland while the bridges and mainplates are manufactured by YEMA in its Morteau workshops.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

France-Swiss accuracy

With its Swiss regulating part, the CMM.30 tourbillon is a high-precision movement ensuring high performance. The free-sprung balance wheel regulates isochronism for lasting precision and stability. In the absence of a regulator, the durability of the hairspring is increased, as is long-term precision. Adjusted in 6 positions, the CMM.30 ensures an accuracy of –3 and +7 seconds per day.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

105 hours of power reserve thanks to a large barrel

The CMM.30 has a single large barrel optimized to ensure a power reserve of 105 hours. Specifically manufactured for the CMM.30 by Générale Ressorts, this large barrel is off-centered in order to make enough room for the gears and the balance wheel so as to preserve a contained thickness.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Optimised escapement

Interface between the gear train and the regulating organ, the escapement is the place where energy and chronometry intersect in a complex interaction. The escapement is an energy-demanding system, it alone consumes more than half of the barrels’ energy. It is the friction of the anchor pallets on the anchor which, despite their lubrication, dissipates a good part of this energy.

The CMM.30 tourbillon escapement presents notable improvements which reduce this friction thanks to an innovating and particularly sophisticated manufacturing process (LiGA technology). This advanced escapement ensures optimization of the entire mechanics, precision and longevity of the caliber components.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Antimanetic and shock-resistant

Designed for everyday life, the CMM.30 presents robust technical characteristics for a tourbillon caliber. Equipped with non-magnetic components, such as a Swiss-made non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass made in gold and micro-components manufactured with LiGA technology materials, the CMM.30 is capable of withstanding exposures to electromagnetic fields up to 2,000 Gauss, a real feat for a tourbillon caliber.

The architecture of the tourbillon cage bridge with its free-sprung balance wheel and the shock absorbers manufactured by Kif make the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and acceleration up to 5,000 Gs in all directions.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

MRSTATELESS NEW RELEASES , YEMA 0

Two limited editions marking the brand’s 75th anniversary. The diving watches that arrive with a stainless steel or bronze case stand out for featuring a tourbillon and a tide indicator on the dial.

Yema, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, presents the new Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe to mark the occasion which arrives in two limited editions of 75 pieces each.

In addition to the obvious complications, the new dive watch adds a tourbillon at 6 o’clock and a tide indicator at noon.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

The tide indicator, which is painted blue and red, describes a half rotation through its pointer every 6h12m7.89s depending on the Earth’s rotation, marking a new tidal cycle, which means that the indicator operates a full 360º rotation every two cycles and which occurs every 12h25m15.79s.

The watch that wears a stainless steel or bronze case comes with dimensions of 42.50 mm in diameter by 14.50 mm in thickness with a mainly brushed finish and polished on the edges, domed unidirectional black bezel with 60m scale, domed sapphire crystal, crown at 3 o ‘clock with crown guards, open case back and 100m of water resistance.

On the black sunray dial, applied hour indexes and Dauphine’s hands in the same colour as the case and filled with Super-Luminova, the ‘Mareographe’ colour we talked about above and which comes with a steel or bronze contour, and the 60s tourbillon that completes a rotation every minute on which there are two plaques engraved with the brand name and ‘France’ relating to its roots.

Inside runs the CMM.30 hand-wound movement designed by Olivier Mory, which in addition to offering an impressive 105 hours of power reserve, is resistant to magnetic fields of up to 2,000 Gauss, shocks of up to 5,000G and an accuracy of – 3/+7 seconds per day. The same can be admired through the rear sapphire glass, highlighting the blackened bridges.

Microbrand Watch World

Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary By Yema

Shony M

Yema, the enigmatic watch brand, presents a unique identity. Founded in 1948 by the French watchmaker Henry Louis Belmont, it has consistently crafted exquisite timepieces infused with a distinctive French flair. Yet, it distinguishes itself by its limited production, crafting watches in small numbers. Regardless of whether you label it an independent or microbrand, the latest offering from Yema is bound to captivate your attention. This exceptional timepiece boasts one of horology’s most coveted and desired complications—the tourbillon. Join us as we delve into Yema’s latest creation, the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary.

Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary.

Yema is set to introduce two distinct variations of its upcoming timepiece. The first version will be crafted from stainless steel, while the second will showcase an exquisite bronze construction. Each of these editions will be strictly limited to a production run of 75 numbered units. Both versions will showcase a 42.5mm case with a captivating combination of design elements, including alternating finishes that incorporate vertical brushing, polished bevels, and a finely detailed circular brushed bezel.

Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary.

The unidirectional rotating bezel is meticulously fashioned from scratch-resistant sapphire with a subtle dome shape, necessitating a painstaking manufacturing procedure. This bezel is then adorned with an insert featuring a minimalist 0-60 scale and a luminescent marker positioned at the 12 o’clock position.

Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary.

The dial draws inspiration from the design elements of YEMA’s iconic 1970s Yachtingraf model. It boasts a sunray black finish adorned with applied markers coated in Super-LumiNova, as well as a vibrant Maréographe sub-dial reminiscent of the vintage Yachtingraf’s regatta style. The dial is further enhanced with a tide indicator represented by a small hand adorned with the YEMA logo.

The Stainless Steel Version.

In the YEMA Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary timepiece, this hand tracks high and low tides, completing half-revolutions every 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 7.89 seconds to signify the shift from high tide to low tide and vice versa. Additionally, it completes a full revolution every 12 hours, 25 minutes, and 15.79 seconds.

The Tourbillon.

Positioned at the 6 o’clock position, the 60-second tourbillon creates a mesmerizing kinetic display within the partially open dial, captivating the wearer with its oscillations and rotations.

Inside the watch, behind a clear caseback, we find Yema’s CMM.30 – a hand wound tourbillon caliber, offering 105 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

The caliber visible through the caseback.

Featuring non-magnetic components like a Swiss-made non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass crafted in gold, and micro-components fabricated with LiGA technology materials, the CMM.30 exhibits remarkable resistance to electromagnetic fields, handling exposures of up to 2,000 Gauss—a remarkable achievement for a tourbillon movement.

The structural design of the tourbillon cage bridge, coupled with its free-sprung balance wheel and shock absorbers, renders the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and accelerations of up to 5,000 Gs in all directions. This tourbillon movement is purpose-built for everyday use.

Each and every part of the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary, including the watch case, dial, and hands, is manufactured within a 72-kilometer radius of Morteau, the home of Yema, extending across both France and Switzerland. The calibre bridges and mainplates are meticulously crafted within YEMA’s Morteau facilities, serving as the hub for the final assembly of all components as well.

As mentioned above, Yema will be offering this watch in two versions, both of them will be paired with a premium quality FKM Viton rubber strap. Both versions, the stainless steel, reference 37.33.66.SN.U6 and the bronze version, reference 37.33.66.ZN.U6, will be priced at 9,990 euro.

To Sum It Up

It’s no secret that Yema produces exceptional timepieces. Among the watches we’re eagerly anticipating is the Traveler Micro-Rotor Limited Edition , a sports watch with an integrated bracelet that’s already sold out. To this list, we can now add the company’s latest release, the Yachtinggraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary. This watch presents the tourbillon complication in a sporty-elegant design, boasting an incredibly attractive price point, especially for a European tourbillon timepiece.

While we ponder whether Yema should be classified as a microbrand or an independent manufacturer, we hope the company doesn’t hold back on creating more such outstanding watches.

Yachtingraf Steel Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Nice to look at on other peoples wrists……especially when it’s service time 😬

Not a lot of use where I live, as we have 4 tides a day. If you are really bored, you can read about it here . I don't think that I would spend $10K on it though.

Chris Stark

Not bad looking at all. I had no idea that Yema has been around for 75 years. Cheers!

Fergfour

I like it and I’m glad Yema is trying new things like, as well as the microrotor. I’m hoping the new upcoming 3 hander movement is in a more affordable offering. By the way, I have 6 Yema’s from the past couple years, no problem with any of them.

Good looking, but I hate ‘limited special edition’ runs of watches.

I guess tourbillons are a right of passage they are however still pretty yet pretty useless and expensive to service , that been said the new Yema manufacture is nice and the models they are presenting not too bad at all....

Just noticed that price. I will pass thanks.....

dirtvictim

Looks great, mvt looks very nice.

sdiver68

Interesting until I saw the thickness 14.5 and manual wind. Interested in their microrotor if not for brand reputation.

Medusa

When it comes to pre-orders, I always figured that whatever the deposit is, is what the watch cost the brand. I think its important for brands invest in their own products before their customers are asked too.

midshipman01

I really like yemas styling all around, and I also like that they’re trying to be an in house brand, that is cool and uncommon in their price range. what I don’t understand as much is why they don’t focus their efforts on making their movements really solid as opposed to being so all over the board. Multiple generations of 3 hand, gmt, micro rotor, now tourbillons…and as far as I know not a single one of them known for their reliability or polish. My 3000 movement is certainly not, and that’s third generation of the simplest iteration. not my business of course but it’s a shame that by now, a good few years into this, they could have one or maybe 2 really respected movements and a good rep instead of what they have now, which…

I have three Yema's with the 2nd gen 2000 mvmt and I haven't had one problem. The persistent story of CS issues on WUS is hard to kill, and I suspect is related mostly to their 1st gen in-house mvmt. Lucky for Yema the number of actual Yema consumers on WUS is likely a tiny % of their sales otherwise they'd be out of business. What's more interesting to me is the new 3-hander movement which I'm hoping is a lot less expensive than the tourbillon, and maybe even the micro-rotor mvmt. I'd assume they'd eventually retire the current 2000 mvmt but who knows: ..leveraging from the manufacturing and production methods implemented for the CMM.20 micro-rotor, our upcoming 3-hands Manufacture Caliber CMM.10 features higher precision, better shock-resistance and 70+ hours power reserve, assuring stable and accurate timekeeping. Our watchmakers have been working on this new caliber during the past 2 years and the first series are expected to roll out as early as the first quarter of 2024.

Would what will happen with those who buy this when it comes servicing time, given Yema's customer service rep????

Expensive "googaw" that I don't need.

slorollin

That's a lot of money. With that proprietary movement it's probable that it would have to go back to Yema for most servicing, and there's the rub.

Deity42

I'd trust a Seagull tourbillion before I trusted this one. If they can't get three-hand dive watches right, I don't know why anyone would buy a $10k haute complication from them.

Gorgeous, but 10k I’ll just admire from afar 😣

HughesAlex9010

With Yema's QC track record I'd be scared of that tourbillon ejecting itself from the watch like a piece of shrapnel and embedding into my frontal lobe. Pass.

LosAngelesTimer

Yema should focus on the basics, like straightening out their QC and CS, along with moving past funding everything through KS - you know, behaving like an a legitimate “big boy” brand - before skipping about five steps ahead with something like this. If they have trouble properly servicing three hand movements, one can only imagine the nightmare that will ensue when one of these inevitably goes wonky.

I would probably pick a different "budget" tourbillon from horage or FC.

Review: Horage Tourbillon 1

www.watchfinder.com.au

I recall coming across some threads about Yema’s poor customer service in the past here and elsewhere as some have pointed out. It sounds very risky getting their tourbillon watch which will likely cost a lot just to service it via a third party if there are issues getting Yema to do so satisfactorily.

CAG_1337

Speaking generally, I think having a tourbillon visible from the dial side is quite gauche.

I'm not saying there haven't been issues before but on some of the ongoing Yema threads here, and the Yema FB group(s) I look at now and again, I'm not seeing any rampant QC/customer service posts? Maybe it's possible things have improved since the bad old days. Maybe the first in-house mvmt was a dud, and the 2000 is less prone to issues. The 6 I have are running like a champ and I'm eyeing a 7th maybe later this month or next. I won't be a blind fanboy though, if I ever have an issue I have no problem making it known.

I don't know how much cost the R&D went into creating this, but the resources would probably have been spent better on other aspects of the company.

TOOL WATCH REVOLUTION: LUXURY MEETS FUNCTIONALITY

" The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe has been designed for purpose, a true tool watch able to withstand the harshest conditions. It features a double dome sapphire crystal, a unidirectional count-up sapphire bezel, 10 ATM water-resistance, high anti-magnetic resistance (2,000 Gauss) and shock-resistance (5,000G) as well as an innovative tide indication complication animated by an exceptional and precise tourbillon caliber offering over 4 days power reserve. This unique set of features is uncommon since tourbillon watches are mostly designed as watchmaking art pieces that are delicate in their utilization. This is one of the rarest tourbillons built for daily use, a luxury timepiece that is as rugged and functional as it is beautiful and refined, a tool watch in the lineage of YEMA watches. " CHRISTOPHER BÔLE CEO & HEAD OF DESIGN

DOUBLE DOME SAPPHIRE BEZEL & CRYSTAL

The unidirectional rotating bezel is characterized by its luxurious finishes. It is crafted from scratch-resistant, slightly domed sapphire, requiring a much more sophisticated and time-consuming manufacturing process. The bezel is completed by an insert with a minimalist 0-60 graduation and a luminescent marker at noon. This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

YACHTINGRAF ICONIC DIAL

The dial takes inspiration from the aesthetic codes of the 1970’s Yachtingraf iconic model. It features a sunray black finish with applied markers coated with Super-LumiNova and a colorful Maréographe register reminiscent of the regatta-style Yachtingraf vintage model completed with a tides indicator in the form of a small hand gracefully decorated with YEMA’s logo. The 60-second tourbillon boasts a mesmerizing kinetic spectacle for the wearer as it beats and turns against the partially open dial.

STEEL/BRONZE CASE & SAPPHIRE DISPLAY CASEBACK

The case design combines both sportiness and elegance while ensuring a 10 BAR water resistance. Available in steel or bronze, it features different finishes with vertical brushing and polished beveled lugs and a circular brushed bezel. With a 42.5mm contained diameter and a 12.3mm thickness (14.5mm including the double-domed sapphire crystal), it offers balanced proportions for such a timepiece.

TOURBILLON CALIBER

Invented by French horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, the tourbillon is an advanced regulating organ present in certain high-end mechanical watches, intended to improve the precision of timepieces. It consists of a rotating cage containing the balance wheel and its hairspring, the escape wheel, the lever and the second wheel which drives it. The cage rotates 360 degrees every 60 seconds, which counteracts the effects of gravity and reduces any positional errors of accuracy. The tourbillon embodies watchmaking know-how, only a few Manufactures master the creation of this caliber masterpiece.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

MARÉOGRAPHE  COMPLICATION

The Maréographe consists of a tide complication placed in an elegant register. To make this magnificent phenomenon of nature visible, an elegant small hand indicates high and low tides by making gradual half-revolutions every 6h 12m 7.89s (change from high tide to low tide and vice versa) and a full revolution every 12h 25m 15.79s.

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

For Olivier Mory, astronomy is a family passion that spans several generations, so for him it was natural to work on a complication linked to the movement of the stars, in this case lunar time and terrestrial tides. The Earth revolves around the Sun by rotating on its own axis. The duration of this rotation on itself is the average day (24 hours). The Moon orbits the Earth in 29.54 days in the same direction as the Earth rotates. The Moon gets a little ahead of the Earth each day, the duration of the Lunar Day is 24 hours 50 minutes 31 seconds. The tidal cycles are conditioned by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon during its rotation around the Earth. By integrating the lunar time on a mechanical watch then by synchronizing the tides to local time, this makes possible to display local tides with rigorous accuracy

RIVOLUZIONE DEL TOOL WATCH: IL LUSSO INCONTRA LA FUNZIONALITÀ

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

CHRISTOPHER BÔLE

Ceo & head of design.

LUNETTA E VETRO ZAFFIRO A DOPPIA CUPOLA

CASSA IN ACCIAIO/BRONZO E  FONDELLO A VISTA IN ZAFFIRO

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

SCAPPAMENTO OTTIMIZZATO

ANTIMAGNETICO E RESISTENTE AGLI URTI

yema yachtingraf tourbillon mareographe

YEMA Manufacture Calibers

YEMA celebrates its 75th anniversary with a Manufacture Tourbillon calibre

On the occasion of his 75th year , French brand Yema recently announced the launch of its future Manufacture Calibres, a major trend in the watchmaking world for several years now.

Now entirely designed and developed in France, in their Morteau workshops, these calibers are the fruit of a titanic process of relocation and re-industrialization begun over a decade ago by the watchmaking house.

At the dawn of a new era marked by the birth of ever more sophisticated, top-quality calibres, we wanted to relive the great (and most difficult) hours of the company, now a key player on the French watchmaking scene.

  • 1 Genesis of a historic French company
  • 2 The first Manufacture Calibre
  • 3 A promising end to the year
  • 3.1 The CMM.10, the future 3-hand Manufacture Calibre
  • 3.2 A Tourbillon movement for Yema's 75th anniversary

  • 4 French excellence

Genesis of a historic French company

It was in 1948, in the Doubsian town of Besançon, that the French watch brand Yema . Founded by Henry Louis Belmont, a descendant of a watchmaking family who graduated at the top of his class at the watchmaking school, the company quickly established its reputation for reliable, daring timepieces, notably by offering the first series of automatic chronometers made in Franche-Comté as early as 1952.

However, if we really want to understand the impact of this new company on the watchmaking market, we have to go back to 1963, the birth year of the diver's watch Yema Superman . Initially designed for aquatic professionals and renowned for its indestructible 300-metre water-resistance and patented stop-brake, its many variations will also win over the hearts of lovers of fine watchmaking.

YEMA Superman Advertising

Over the years, Yema has continued to diversify, entering prestigious sectors such as motor racing with the creation of its model Rally Count worn by Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti in 1966; water sports and its Yachtingraf which equipped the French national sailing team for the 1972 Olympic Games, or the conquest of space with the Spaceman I the first French watch to go into space on the wrist of cosmonaut Jean-Loup Chrétien during his Franco-Soviet mission in 1982.

Despite its dazzling success, 500,000 models sold every year and its status as a France's leading exporter from 1966 to 1968, the late 1980s marked the start of a difficult period for the brand, which struggled to establish itself in the face of competition from cheaper quartz watches. It was regularly sold to other companies. Having been part of the French company Matra since 1982, it was first sold to the Japanese company Seiko in 1988, then bought by Louis-Eric Beckensteiner for one million euros in 2004 to become "Yema Maison Horlogère Française".

After several attempts at relaunching the brand, it was placed in receivership at the end of 2008, and finally liquidated a few months later. But, fortunately, the story doesn't end there...

On February 3, 2009, a salvific press release announced the acquisition of Yema by the French group Amber watches based in Morteau. He is determined to develop the brand further, by creating new models and making it benefit from his sales strategy, based in particular on the "Made in France" concept. In 2011, after two years of development and more than three million euros invested, Yema announces the arrival of its first Calibre Maison mechanical, the MBP1000 . More than 250,000 units will be sold over ten years. Since then, all the company's timepieces have been designed, assembled and manufactured in France, and produced in partnership with third-party manufacturers to achieve an extremely competitive quality/price ratio.

At the end of 2020, the brand took a decisive step forward with the launch of participatory financing for its two new technical innovations, the Calibres Maison YEMA2000 (3 needles) and YEMA3000 (GMT) with a limited reissue of his iconic Superman in two versions: Superman Steel Bronze and Superman GMT Bronze . Presented as an evolution of the first movement, these calibers not only offer greater precision, thanks to a more solid raquetterie, modified mass inverters for smoother winding of the mechanism, and an oscillating weight finish featuring fine lettering and an elegant signature, but also feature advanced complications such as a drive wheel and date spring for more precise date jumping, a date system separate from the overall assembly, and a GMT complication for the YEMA3000, enabling a second time zone to be displayed with an independent hand.

Superman Steel Bronze

Success is on the cards. Yema brings together over 1.5 million euros in less than three hours with this proposal of models widely acclaimed and equipped with calibers endorsed by the public. With this campaign, the brand enters a new chapter in its history and strikes a major blow in the French, if not global, watchmaking world, unveiling new horizons and new ambitions.

The first Manufacture Calibre

The brand wishes to pursue its ambition of offering a range of high quality calibers, whose components are manufactured in its newly renovated French workshops located in Morteau. After more than two years of research and development, on November 15, 2022, the American crowdfunding platform Kickstarter saw the launch of the first Manufacture movement micro-rotor caliber.

The gleaming Manufacture Morteau Calibre CMM.20 team the Yema Wristmaster Traveller Micro Rotor a reissue of the historic model inspired by the 1960s. "Haute horlogerie accessible to all" is the motto of this ten-day campaign, which features a limited production run of 1948 pieces, a nod to the company's year of birth. Three models are offered, in colors matching the micro-rotor caliber (green, blue, black) and priced at a very competitive €1,499 ex VAT (€1,799 inc VAT), offering a 50% reduction on the future retail price of the timepiece. The brand promises delivery in monthly batches of 500 watches, from July to October 2023.

To create this micromotor caliber, with its small oscillating weight inlaid in a bridge, Yema has not hesitated to surround itself with the best. In particular, it collaborates with renowned independent watchmaker Olivier Mory, whose work has also left its mark on the creations of such greats as Audemars Piguet, Piaget and Cartier. The manufacturer accompanies the teams through every stage, from machines to caliber design.

Featuring French-made micro-components (bridges and plates) (with the exception of the regulating components, which are sourced from Swiss partners), this caliber boasts features that are on a par with the best on the market. On the technical side, the 3.7 mm-thick CMM.20 offers a 70-hour power reserve and a daily deviation of -3/+7 seconds, a chronometric performance close to COSC standards. In terms of finish, it is coated with a sublime microblasting offered in three colors, features satin-finish bevelling and reveals an oscillating weight composed of high-density tungsten. The balance wheel is made of Glucydur, a non-magnetic metal alloy that offers greater resistance to deformation and corrosion.

Caliber Manufacture Morteau 20

Once again, it's a real hit with the general public, as the brand collects nearly 2.5 million euros thanks to some 1,450 contributors who are rushing to the funding platform to support this new project.

A promising end to the year

While deliveries of chronographs featuring the CMM.20 movement are still underway, Yema has not stopped its relentless development work. In early September, the brand's General Manager, Christopher Bôle, issued a press release announcing the arrival of not one, but two new Manufacture Calibres. All the more reason for the brand's die-hard fans to rejoice.

The CMM.10, the future 3-hand Manufacture Calibre

Buoyed by the success of its crowdfunding initiative, Yema is back at it again with the forthcoming integration of its caliber CMM.10 which will once again be campaigned on the Kickstarter platform.

Thanks to their choice of limited series on the first models to feature the CMM.20, Yema's teams have taken the time to refine and confirm their production capacity within a given timeframe, and look forward to deploying their new methods on a larger scale with this new movement.

To date, the brand has given very little information about the technical details of its next Calibre Manufacture Morteau 3 hands . However, it does take care to assure us of "characteristics superior to watchmaking standards", including very high precision, improved shock resistance and a 70+ hour power reserve.

Calibre Manufacture Morteau 3 aiguilles CMM.10

A Tourbillon movement for Yema's 75th anniversary

2023 marks the anniversary of the French watchmaking house, and with a history as rich as its own, it's not surprising that Yema wanted to celebrate this 75th year in style. And so it is, with the announcement of its calibre Tourbillon Manufacture .

Once again machined in their Morteau workshops and designed by Olivier Mory, this first historic model will be offered in an ultra-limited collector's edition. Equipped with the Tourbillon movement, also known as the CMM.30 . The brand is already announcing unprecedented performance and complications.

Just like its predecessor, the manually wound mechanical Tourbillon movement boasts remarkable precision and increased stability with a daily rate deviation ranging between -3 and +7 seconds. Swiss-made and specifically designed for this occasion, its large optimized barrel provides a power reserve of 105 hours and allows for a reduced thickness of the caliber. Furthermore, its optimized escapement grants it considerable longevity thanks to components machined with sophisticated LiGA technology.

Designed as a true toolwatch, the new Yachtingraf aims to be as rugged as it is refined, capable of withstanding the harshest conditions. Featuring a scratch-resistant double-domed sapphire crystal and a unidirectional sapphire diving bezel, it offers water resistance of 10 ATM as well as very high antimagnetic resistance (2000 Gauss) and real insensitivity to shocks and vibrations (up to 5000 G).

However, if one characteristic deserves special attention, it is undoubtedly its moon phase complication known as the "Maréographe," positioned at noon on the dial. Conditioned by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon during its orbit around the Earth, the tidal cycles are indicated here by a dedicated small hand making half a turn around the dial every 6 hours, 12 minutes, 7.89 seconds to illustrate the transition from high tide to low tide, and completing a full rotation every 12 hours, 25 minutes, 15.79 seconds.

Finally, it's worth taking a look at the finishing touches of the timepiece. The sunburst black dial echoes the Yachtingraf models from the 1970s, also featuring the famous steel "baton" indices. The open heart at 6 o'clock reveals the animation of the Tourbillon mechanism, displaying its optimal finish with its nanometric black coating, achieved through the advanced Swiss ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) technology, a revolutionary gas deposition process.

French excellence

Although the history of Yema has not been a smooth one, the company has nonetheless succeeded in becoming one of France's leading watchmakers, and is undoubtedly one of the best-known and most appreciated brands among French watch enthusiasts.

Its many cult models, its prowess in research and technical development, and its commitment to "Made in France" have often enabled it to stand out in a crowded watch market.

There's no doubt that the Manufacture Calibre collection, already launched with the CMM.20 calibre and soon to be extended with the CMM.10 and CMM.30, will once again legitimize its prestige and illustrate French savoir-faire.
