Lagos is the city and main port in the state of Lagos, Nigeria. Until 1975, it was the state capital of Lagos, and until December 1991, it was the federal capital of Nigeria. Lagos, however, has long remained an unofficial place for many government agencies. The population of the city is concentrated on the island of Lagos, in the lagoon of Lagos, in the Strait of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea. Originally run as a British colony, Lagos was part of the West African settlements of the United Kingdom from 1866 to 1874, when it became part of the Gold Coast Colony (modern Ghana). In 1960, Lagos became the capital of independent Nigeria . Control over its inland areas was returned to the city in 1967 with the creation of the state of Lagos. In 1975, a new capital was created, located in the center of the city near Abuja, to replace Lagos, which by that time was suffering from slums, environmental pollution, and road congestion.
