The Biggest Little Boat Yard

super yacht dry dock

Subbase Drydock, on the island of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, is a regionally unique marine repair and maintenance facility, and is fondly referred to as ‘the biggest little boat yard in the Caribbean’.

Subbase Drydock has been operational since 1981 and the yard was founded on three guiding principles, which the Subbase team strive to incorporate into all of their daily operations: – Dedication to the utmost in quality service – Unparalleled reliability – Commitment that will earn your trust

The dry dock at Subbase has a deep water approach

Family owned and operated, the two dry docks serve vessels of all types, from cargo ships and ferries to tugboats, charter vessels and superyachts. Subbase Drydock operates the largest yacht repair facility in the Caribbean and their comprehensive array of services and technical projects has resulted in them welcoming an impressive spectrum of internationally operational yachts.

The 1200-tonne and 350-tonne drydocks can haul vessels up to 68m (225ft) in length and have deep water approaches. Each vessel arriving at the facility is assigned a dedicated project manager, who is available to the Captain and crew 24/7. This individual attention and willingness to personalise every project to particular specifications, while ensuring that each project stays on task and is completed in a timely manner, has earned Subbase Drydock considerable credibility and positive reviews from many leading European yards.

On-site services include machinery and welding shops, painting and fabrication, and crane services for the stepping of masts and removal/installation of engines. Other amenities at Subbase Drydock include optional cooling tower and electricity hook ups for those needing to remain aboard throughout works, and 24/7 security.

Caribbean Dry Dock Facility Opens Up to Superyachts

By Rebecca Bradbury   30 November 2015

Superyachts are now allowed exclusive access to a 180-metre dry dock in the Caribbean , following an agreement between International Marine Management (IMM), a yacht refit and project management specialist, and the manager of the facility, ENA.

Located in Fort de France, Martinique, the dry dock will be extremely reassuring for captains sailing in the Leewards and Windwards as they will now know that facilities are available to them should it be required.

The announcement is a huge development in the refit and maintenance infrastructure that is available to the region’s yachting industry, and comes at a perfect time as the Caribbean season for superyacht charters kicks off this week.

Since changing hands at the start of 2015, ENA has undertaken significant improvements to the dry dock and surrounding area, making the facility more equipped to cater for superyachts. The dock is 180 metres long and 23.5 metres wide, with a 7.6-metre draft (above the blocks).

Centrally located in Fort de France, in an ISPS-compliant area, the dry dock is the only kind of its size in the region and is perfect for yachting clients. Metal workshops are located onsite, with ABS, Lloyd’s and BV-certified welders available. Meanwhile, the renowned French specialist Sud Moteur is able to assist with any scale of project.

Yachting projects undertaken in the Martinique dry dock will be managed by two of IMM’s principles, Fabrice Maitre and Jean-Michel Beron, who have been responsible for a wide range of complex refits throughout the French Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.

According to the brand, IMM has managed several refits in the Martinique facility since 2010, each delivered on time, on budget and to a European yachting-quality standard.

The best places to dock your superyacht

Life aboard a Super Yacht is undoubtedly a memorable experience. These luxurious boats are equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems  and their crews are accurately trained high-performance teams.

But for the boat to always be in the best conditions, it is essential to perform periodic maintenance in facilities that allow to review, update, repair, and intervene any part of the structure and onboard systems.

There are many docks around the world with the capacity to undertake the inspection and maintenance of vessels. But few of them have professionals, facilities, and equipment that can make the maintenance and repair of Superyachts.

The best places to dock your superyacht by SCS Yachting

In the elite of docks for Superyachts, we find the facilities of Amico & Co , located in the port of Genoa, which recently put launching its modern ShipLift system. This system is capable of removing Mega yachts up to 95 meters from the water and completely repairing large vessels that, without the ShipLift system, would have to stop in dry dock for maintenance.

The revolutionary innovation of the ShipLift system consists of the incorporation of a submersible platform that can raise the vessels from the water to the ground level so that they are housed in a structure dedicated exclusively to that vessel. When the boat is out of the water, a sophisticated mechanism moves the yacht so that professionals can access any part of the structure and accurately perform the necessary repairs.

In addition to technological innovation, the Amico & Co dock is designed in a 100% sustainable manner, all maneuvers have zero environmental impact and zero emissions, with ISO14001 certification .

Awsome Marinas around the globe

While Superyachts are at the repair dock, what can guests and crews do?

For example, spend a few days enjoying the impressive facilities and amenities of the Marinas and the luxury Yacht Clubs that can be found around the world.

There are many impressive Marinas on all the coasts of the five continents, we have selected 20 so you can start choosing where you want to rest and relax for a few days out of the sea.

Subbase Drydock is a very well recommended versatile and professional full service repair / refit facility in the USVI, with gated 24hr security. Located conveniently close to Crown Bay Marina and immediately adjacent to the Cruise Ship wharfs at Subbase.

It has deep water approaches, sheltered protection at the docks, and two dry docks of 600 ton and 1,200 ton respectively, which can accommodate large yachts, catamarans and other vessels up to 51ft beam with ease. They also have a 100-ton crane onsite.

The facility integrates remarkably well with the other popular and respected service providers located onsite or nearby – including Island Rigging and Hydraulics (good hydraulics capabilities), Offshore Marine (Yamaha & Yanmar dealers) and a host of other recommended service providers.

This makes the dry dock a good choice to ‘park up’ and get the work done. In recent times, large superyachts, (including some large Perini Navi and Benetti yachts) have been returning in greater numbers to haul and carry out services and repairs in St. Thomas…. and Subbase Drydock has certainly been up to the task of providing a reliable and professional service for even the largest of yachts.

Amico & Co.: new dry dock for gigayachts unveiled

The project financing for refitting interventions on yachts exceeding 100 meters in length has been presented to the port authority of Genoa

Alberto Amico – Bruno Guglielmini

Genoa – From project to project financing, already formally submitted to the Port Authority of Genoa: the Italian shipyard Amico & Co., among the major players in the Mediterranean for maxi yacht refitting and concessionaire of over 65,000 square meters in the port, has submitted to the authority a proposal for project financing, to potentially be put out to tender if deemed of public interest.

Confirming what was previously announced a few months ago by SUPER YACHT 24, the president of the company, Alberto Amico, alongside CEO Bruno Guglielmini stated: “The market has grown exponentially in recent years and our most equipped competitors, primarily MB92, have secured over 70% of the segment for yachts over 100 meters, while others are forcefully entering the scene. We have the reputation and know-how that would allow us to confidently keep pace, but we have a weakness in infrastructure, as our six onshore slots can accommodate boats up to 96-97 meters and the covered dry dock we have built in our areas can only accommodate vessels up to 102 meters long.”

Hence the proposal to the AdSP to create, through project financing, a covered masonry dock measuring 150×30 meters, fully electrified like the two small docks alongside, ideally to be located in the Sarimi water area, a metalworking workshop acquired by Amico a few years ago, falling within the adjacent spaces of ship repairs. Considering the €20.5 million funding provided by the Region and the fact that the total investment would amount to around €60 million, the financial architecture is still being defined: “Since the structure will be demanialized at the end of the concession, the private contribution must be directly proportional to the duration of the concession, keeping in mind that the amortization period for such a structure is around a hundred years. On our part, however, there is financial availability, an excellent business plan based on solid contracts and a consolidated customer base, and maximum flexibility regarding the needs that the AdSP will express and which, potentially, will be the basis for the tender.”

Amico isn’t just referring to the financial aspect of the operation and the need for adjustments in the drafting of the port regulatory plan, but also to the tensions with the repairers, primarily with the T. Mariotti shipyard: “We believe that the proposal is an opportunity to rationalize the area. Moreover, a slight delay is also conceivable, which would probably allow for the expansion desired by T. Mariotti. In this sense too, project financing seems like an appropriate formula, as it leaves the control to the Port Authority. It would, however, involve sacrificing the berth of a ferry for repairs to allow for the development of an activity that has reached saturation point and has great potential for expansion”.

The Amico area, dominated by the megashiplift and the new internal dock built a few years ago (“we have made nominal investments of €120 million since the start of operations, which, when discounted, are much more”), is indeed packed with mega yachts and bustling with workers: “As recently shown in the study produced by Genova for Yachting, the activity of the cluster has an impact on the city even greater than it has on the directly involved companies. Just think that on average, in winter, there are 1,500 crew members living and spending in Genoa. We are forced to give up several contracts, and as mentioned, in the segment of boats over 100 meters, we are at least a couple of years behind our competitors’ investments, even considering the approximately 2-3 years of work it would take to have this dock fully operational”.

Regarding the lack of space, Amico and Guglielmini, prompted by the recently aired hypothesis by the mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci to allocate part of the former Ilva spaces to the nautical construction sector, conclude by emphasizing that not all areas are equal: “Regardless of the possibility that the steel industry maintains the spaces currently occupied in Genoa, it would not be easy to coexist with an activity like ours, which already suffers from proximity to a related sector such as ship repairs. For this reason, we hope that the Port Authority knows how to seize the opportunity for rationalization as well as business and employment enhancement – about fifty direct employees that the facility could attract – underlying our proposal”.

Oceanco boasts an impressive new superyacht building and dry dock facility in Alblasserdam on the outskirts of Rotterdam. This provides the highly respected Dutch shipyard with the flexibility to build yachts measuring up to 140m in length without compromise. So far, the largest yacht built in the new facility has been a 95m luxury mega yacht.

OCEANCO’s Impressive New Superyacht Building and Dry Dock Facility

Fitted with integrated thermal and cooling systems, the new yacht building and dry dock features dedicated climate control systems that regulate temperature and humidity in the interior of the yachts and the spray tents. The dry dock offers flexible uses as it can be divided in several compartments by using segmented doors. A 100-ton capacity crane configured 2 x 2 x 25 tons with tandem beams can assist. Additional cranes outside the assembly hall needed to lift major components and sections from a barge are extendable to 20 meters.  The supplementary sectional doors enable a barge to float inside the building. To augment access and speed up logistics, there are horizontal traveling cranes fixed to the walls flanking either side of the yacht. Moreover, there are three large elevators capable of handling loaded drive-in and drive-out forklifts. Furthermore, the shed features fixed locations for scales to maintain and monitor weight control.

Transport in and out of the building is through a controlled air lock or directly to areas that are inaccessible from the main assembly hall be operated in three different ways: there can be a uniform temperature throughout the hall or there can be the option to isolate certain areas such as inside the yacht, so as to keep the humidity and temperature at an appropriate level for the yacht’s interior. Additionally the spray tent has a consistent temperature commensurate with special paint requirements as the airflow velocity and air-volume refreshment rate in addition to temperature and proper humidity is crucial for a first class gloss finish of superyachts. All climate systems, temperature, humidity and airflow, can be operated individually.

To further enhance the area for paint and other tasks, there is centralized vacuum system to keep the area dust free with water/gas/oxygen/ compressed systems and an isolated paint fumes extraction system. All of the systems in the shed have been designed to be extremely efficient and environmentally conscious utilizing deep soil thermal heat/cooling exchange and river water for more cooling possibilities.

Compositeworks gains two 100m-plus dry docks in merger

Compositeworks has announced an agreement with the atlantic refit center in la rochelle to operate its two 176m and 107m dry docks.….

Atlantic Refit Center

Superyacht refit specialist Compositeworks in La Ciotat has announced an agreement with the Atlantic Refit Center in La Rochelle to operate its two dry-docks of 176m and 107m in length, with exclusive access to the larger one. The merging of Compositeworks and Atlantic Refit Center, under the Compositeworks brand, is due to be completed by the end of the year, and is part of a bold strategy to expand its refit services in the Mediterranean and beyond.

"We are very pleased to be able to offer our clients more options for where they can receive a Compositeworks refit, with all the guarantees in terms of time, cost and quality that implies,” says CEO Ben Menem (pictured). “We strongly believe we can bring our expert service and technical know-how to La Rochelle, which over the past 10 years has already developed an excellent reputation for superyacht conversions and paintwork.”

“Our knowledge and experience of major refit projects, such as the award-winning conversion Enigma XK , fits well with the increasing demand for a more technical approach and state-of-the-art facilities,” adds Stéphane Marcelli, director of the Atlantic Refit Centre, shown in its current state in the first image in the above slider. “I have long believed in La Rochelle as a first-class destination for both yachts and their crews and am thrilled that to be working with Compositeworks in order to fulfil this potential.”

In conversation with SuperyachtNews, Mennen revealed that negotiations had been underway since late 2015 — well before SEMIDEP, the state-owned developer of La Ciotat’s docklands, announced in June that Blohm + Voss had secured a three-year concession to use its 200m dry dock. The news came as a disappointment to Compositeworks, which had also been in the bidding for the lease.

Located in a fully ISPS coded secure zone, the La Rochelle site is the only facility between Calais and Gibraltar devoted exclusively to superyacht refitting. Moreover, it can marshal a substantial network of marine subcontractors in Saint-Nazaire and along the Atlantic seaboard. In the first stage of an extensive upgrade of the infrastructure, Compositeworks is in the process of finalising plans for covering the largest dry dock with a permanent climate-controlled structure to a height of 34m, due to be completed by next September, at an estimated cost of between €6-8 million. There are also potential plans to expand the facility into the surrounding basin.

The only potential drawback from a client perspective is that, in terms of transport, La Rochelle is not the easiest place to get to. Mennem, however, does not believe this will dissuade yacht owners and their crews, pointing out that there are direct flights from Southampton, from Nice via Lyons, or from various European cities to nearby Nantes and Bordeaux.

“We see that Pendennis is working well and that a lot of yachts are refitting in Holland or Germany, so heading north is not a problem for these boats,” he says. “We believe it’s more a matter of creating a state-of-the-art facility and the yachts will follow. In addition, the town itself is stunning and the surrounding region offers plenty of activities for visiting crews.”

As the summer cruise season comes to an end, the CW yard in La Ciotat is already full to overflowing. The merger with Atlantic Refit Center is part of an ongoing expansion strategy as the growing megayacht fleet continues to stretch refit resources in the Mediterranean. CW already has agreements in place with neighbouring shipyards in Marseilles to use their facilities for refits on megayachts up to 140m. It is now looking to secure similar agreements or mergers with other yards outside France.

Dry vs. Wet docking : pros and cons for your boat or yacht

  • August 29, 2023

author-avatar

Deciding where to store your boat when you’re not using it may seem like a simple decision, but it actually has major implications for the care and durability of your boat or yacht. Two of the most common options are the dry or the wet docking, both with their advantages and disadvantages. To help you make the best decision, we are going to examine the pros and cons of each option.

Dry docking

Dry docking , often located in a slipway, involves storing your boat out of the water. This type of storage can range from simple open-air structures to enclosed, climate-controlled facilities.

Pros of Dry docking:

  • Protection against the elements: One of the greatest advantages of the dry dock is that it offers excellent protection against the elements. By storing your boat out of the water, you minimize exposure to saltwater corrosion and marine organisms that can adhere to the hull. Additionally, your boat or yacht will be protected from storms and extreme weather conditions that can cause significant damage, especially during hurricane or storm seasons.
  • Ease of maintenance and repair: Ship maintenance and repair tasks are more accessible in a dry marina. You can easily walk around your boat, making it easy to inspect the entire structure, including the hull and waterline. This allows easy access for cleaning, painting, applying antifouling paint, and any other work necessary to repair your boat.
  • Security: Shipyards, especially those that offer indoor storage such as Barcelona Nautic Center, usually have advanced security systems, such as surveillance cameras, security fences, and security personnel. This makes it more difficult for intruders to gain access to your boat and provides an additional layer of protection.

Cons of Dry docking:

  • Costs: The additional services and benefits of the dry docking can come with a higher price than wet docking. Costs can vary depending on the facility, but in general, dry docking, especially indoors and heated, tends to be more expensive.
  • Water Access: Although having your boat out of the water has its advantages, it also means you can’t just hop on board and set sail at any time. You will need to plan ahead and coordinate with the shipyard staff to have your boat moved into the water.

Wet docking

As the name suggests, involves storing your boat in the water, typically at a dock or berth.

Wet docking pros:

  • Convenience: The biggest advantage of the marina in water is convenience. Your boat is always ready to sail, which is ideal if you use it frequently. You won’t have to worry about moving it to and from the water every time you want to sail.
  • Cost: In many cases, wet docking can be less expensive than dry docking. However, the cost may vary depending on the location of the marina and the facilities and services it offers.

Wet docking cons:

  • Exposure to the Elements: By keeping your boat in the water, it is exposed to the damaging effects of salt water, which can cause corrosion and buildup of marine organisms on the hull. It is also exposed to inclement weather and sea conditions, which can accelerate wear and tear and the need for repairs.
  • Maintenance and repairs: Although it is possible to perform some maintenance and repair tasks while your boat is in the water, other jobs, especially those that involve the part of the hull that is below the water line, can be more challenging. For larger jobs, such as applying antifouling paint or repairing damage to the hull, you may need to move your boat to a shipyard.

Choose the dry or wet docking?

In conclusion, both the dry and the wet docking have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between one or the other will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Consider factors such as cost, ease of maintenance and repair, protection from the elements, and convenience when making your decision. Whatever you choose, be sure to follow a regular maintenance and repair routine to keep your boat in the best possible condition.

These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

The city has become a hub for billionaires’ superyachts, banking on the strength of the “blue economy.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

Why Dry Dock Services are so Important for Your Boat

Why Dry Dock Services are so Important for Your Boat

Keeping your yacht in pristine condition should be one of your top priorities as a yacht owner. Whether it’s the upholstery, yacht body or the components that make your yacht run, routine maintenance and occasional yacht repair in Fort Lauderdale are necessary. And, an important aspect of maintaining your yacht’s functionality and beauty is dry docking services . Having your yacht put on a dry dock once in a while is necessary for proper maintenance and repair. Just like a car needs to get lifted off the ground from time to time, so do yachts.

Out of the water, on to the dock

It goes without saying that much of your yacht’s body is submerged below water. But, just because a yacht is designed to be in the water, doesn’t mean that that water doesn’t take a toll on the boat’s condition. Everything from sitting in the water, to storms and driving at faster speeds, slowly deteriorate the condition of the boat’s body.

Dry docking allows for many of the services and routine yacht repairs in Fort Lauderdale that keep your boat’s body in good shape. For example, much of the fiberglass and gel coat repairs your boat will eventually need take place outside of the water on a dry dock, since the most damaged areas are below the waterline. The same goes for underbody paint work. Not keeping up on paint, fiberglass, or the gel coat will reduce the lifespan of your yacht significantly, so utilizing dry dock services for these things is a must.

A very common problem that develops below the waterline is blistering. Yacht body blisters occur for all sorts of reasons and if ignored, can cause much larger problems. Many owners ignore them until it is too late, which is unfortunate because they are easy and pretty inexpensive to repair. The best way for finding blisters and repairing them is to have an inspection done while your yacht is dry docked in Fort Lauderdale. Experts can find and repair them in almost no time at all, so it’s well worth it.

Mechanical perfection

The condition of your yacht’s body is one thing, but how well it runs is something else altogether. Much of the important maintenance and yacht repair in Fort Lauderdale on critical aspects of your yacht’s drivetrain need to occur outside of the water, this includes everything from the engine, electronics , plumbing and underwater gears. All of these components need to be inspected and worked on fairly often, yet this can only happen if your boat is in a dry dock. Ignoring routine maintenance means serious problems later on, at a much higher cost as well, so once again if you want your boat to last, get accustomed to occasional dry-docking.

If you already own a yacht or are considering getting one, then take the above advice to ensure your boat is built to last. If you aren’t sold yet, then consider talking to a professional about just why it’s so important to dry dock your boat for routine maintenance and repairs.

Heesen Begin Construction On New 85m Dry Dock

Heesen Yachts Begin Construction On New 85m Dry Dock

Heesen Yachts has announced the start of construction works for the new 85 metre dry dock facility at their shipyard in Oss.

The new dry dock was announced for the first time during a press conference held at the Monaco Yacht Club last September and officially began construction on June 15th with a schedule of completion by October 2016.

“The new 85m dry dock is our investment in the future and our response to the market request for bigger yachts,” says the Heesen Board of Directors. “The success of the 65m FDHF Galactica Star,– the largest Heesen currently at sea – and the impressive 70m Project Kometa currently under construction, are creating a lot of interest in Heesen from repeat clients, as well as from owners who are new to our brand. We are now ready to further expand the size of our yachts on offer up to 80m.”

The new shed and its dry dock will be equipped with the latest features to create the best possible working environment.

Temperature and humidity controlled, the dry dock floor will be heated and automatic sun tracker lights on the roof will reduce the use of power for lighting by 25% to optimise illumination. A high quality air filtering system further provides optimal conditions for the painting process: 60,000m3 of air per hour will be filtered through special filters using 70% of the air intake from outside and 30% recycled air.

The new shed will be replacing sheds no. 2 and 3, both built in 1995, and will measure 98m x 30m x 22m. The dry dock will measure 85m x 17m wide x 22m. To make the dock watertight, 2,000 cubic metres of concrete will be employed, while 500 tons of steel will be used to build the hall. The dry dock will contain 6,502m3 of water and it will take approximately one day to fill it.

7 Major Ports in Russia

As the largest of all the landmasses in the entire world, Russia has an extensive coastline. It features on the periphery of the Arctic Ocean surrounding its entire North for trading prospects. The Barents Sea, with the South-Eastern side touching the Sea of Japan encompasses the major ports in Russia.

60% of the total cargo movement on the international scale for Russia takes place through the sea. This includes almost 722 million MT (2016) cargo movement through international vessel calls.

A staggering 67 thousand plus ship calls come through this busy network every year. However, the modern handling facilities ensure that the median handling time for these ships remains 1.45 days. This means the port facilities under the Russian Government’s reach are the best in the business!

As a shipping nation, the Russian seafarers are plenty in number across the globe. The country’s shipping strength boasts over 2820 vessel registrations and 98,000 seafarers under them.

Major Ports Of Russia

In this article, we review the major ports in Russia of inland and international importance. We highlight their share in building the 571 496 million current US$ shipping market in the country. The details also contain their accurate location, identity code, and other geographical information.

1. Port of Novorossiysk (Krasnodar Krai, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUNVS Latitude: 44.720065° Longitude: 37.81373°

Port of Novorossiysk

The port of Novorossiysk has a 3.4 sq. km harbour area with a land area worth 2.7 sq. km. This includes a total of 89 functioning berths for vessels of all sizes. It features as the biggest seagoing port for Russia for over decades with almost 50% higher turnover.

The establishment of the port of Novorossiysk dates back to 1829, with major exchanges since 1846. The port’s range of services recorded 143 million MT of cargo handling for 2020. It includes one of the first Timber wood handling facilities to feature across the Black Sea ports.

Cargo Handling

A total of 11 berths are important in handling timber and other bulk cargo. 4 separate berths over a quay length of 570 meters handle the container operations. The sheer size of the facility allows maximum handling limits of 208 million MT every year.

Network and Layout

The timber operations across the 4 berths (31, 32, 31/A, 31/5) are the most advanced facility across Europe. Their throughput every year crosses figures between 400 thousand to 600 thousand.

This connects with direct railway and loading facilities, reaching out to 70% of timber industries. Meanwhile, 180 thousand and more TEU capacity of container handling adds to the port’s large-scale profits.

2. Port of Saint Petersburg (St. Petersburg, Russia)

UN/Locode: RULED Latitude: 59.91933° Longitude: 30.327035°

Port of Saint Petersburg

The Port of Saint Petersburg has one of the deepest drafts for any Russian facility. The inner anchorage ranges between 23 to 25 meters while the channel draft is approx. 18.5 to 23 meters.

As one of the major ports in Russia, its water area spreads over an expanse of 164 sq. km. Meanwhile, the beginning of its establishment dates back to 1869. At present, the facility uses 470 vessels for in-house operations along their coast.

The passenger terminal at St. Petersburg handles over 450 vessels annually. This happens over a dozen of berths, with 2 major terminals having the alongside the extent of 360 meters.

The total mooring size capacity of this facility is over 30 kilometres. This includes the working capacity of more than 200 berths of various sizes in this facility.

St. Petersburg famously works with 8 major cranes of Panamax capacity. This couples with 3 RMG and 20 gantry nature cranes for handling container goods. This rounds off to the port’s annual handling figures to well over 2 million every year.

The facility connects with major cargo shipping destinations through 2 dozen operating lines. It acts as the major gateway for providing shipping access to the Russian interiors. The neighbouring ports like Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, etc. act as the feeder terminals for the super container ships .

Over 122 tugs and 3 dozen oil barges are resident for berthing and bunkering operations. The rail line operates through the container segment of the port, handling container transport.

3. Port of Ust-Luga (Kingiseppsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUULU Latitude: 59.68294° Longitude: 28.329515°

Port of Ust-Luga

The port of Ust-Luga stands only behind Novorossiysk in terms of cargo handling volume for 2020. It has the biggest handling facility for coal bulk operations in the Northern part of Russia. The additional expansion plans provide this facility with a total area of 30 sq. km.

Ust-Luga has 5 major berths that operate for round the year operation in severe temperatures. These handle over 30 vessels at once with anchorage facilities over 20 meters and higher depth.

The state-of-art coal loading facilities handle export abilities up to 20 million MT annually. It also is one of the newest facilities in Russia, dating back to 2011 for its establishment.

The loading conveyors for the coal handle up to 500 MT every hour on average. This facility accommodates vessels ranging up to 60,000MT of DWT for coal loading.

In addition, Ust-Luga also handles livestock, liquid, and general cargo operations. The overall cargo operations have figures worth 102.6 million MT for 2020. 2 mega cranes of 104 MT capacity and 1 of 80 MT capacity operate simultaneously with the conveyor system.

The berthing network contains a ramp bridge terminal and 7 deep berths spread across 1500 meters. Their operations handle 1000 to 1450 vessels up to 1,20,000 MT DWT.

The layout also has a warehouse for final goods handling, spread over 2800 sq. meters. This facility connects with the Ust-Luga railway terminal that has a special station for the port. The plan is for expanding the facility for over 26 train arrivals every day in the next decade.

4. Port of Vostochny (Nakhodka Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVYP Latitude: 42.762495° Longitude: 133.0514°

Port of Vostochny

The port of Vostochny operates with two major terminals for a handling capacity of 80 million MT. In 2020, the facility shows stats worth 77 million MT including the export. In the internodal structure, the coal loading takes place at the special coal terminal.

The facility is amongst the oldest in the major ports in Russia, dating back to 1974. The trans-Siberian railway connects the terminal to the most prominent end-user plants. Vostochny’s major exports connect with the Asian countries, with Japan and Korea using up to 60%.

Over 550 vessel arrivals for the year 2019 have mostly bulk carriers of different sizes. The facility accommodates vessels up to 1,80,000 MT DWT for bulk coal operations.

The general handling facilities show 300,000 units of rail cars carrying the cargo for this period. The discharge to these rails uses the conveyor mechanism with automatic operations.

The Vostochny terminal employs over 1700 people for the cargo and operational routines. The spreading layout uses 98% of mechanical and electrical automation for operations.

With the progressive development of their phase 3, the handling capacities will touch over 100 million MT. As a result, the net income of the facility amounts to an annual figure of 125 million USD.

5. Port of Primorsk (Vyborgsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUPRI Latitude: 60.3463° Longitude: 28.67096°

Port of Primorsk

The Port of Primorsk is spread across a land piece of 5.4 sq. km area for cargo operation. This is in addition to the 32 sq. km of water limits within their expanse. It features amongst the top Russian ports by volume, handling 50 million MT+ cargo annually.

The initial operations at the facility date back to the year 2001, with a further increase in 2004. The facility operates 6 major berths that spread across a length of 2.8 km alongside. The deepest tanker-handling terminals allow drafts up to 17.8 meters for convenient loading.

An annual handling capacity of 60 million MT and more of liquid cargo allows major export relations. The Primorsk port also stands out as the highest contributor to oil exports in Russia.

The operations include 50 major oil extraction firms for direct loading transfers. All loading arms connect for a throughput of 2800 cubic meters loading rate for bigger tankers. This allows tankers of 1,50,000 DWT capacity to arrive with better draft features.

The wide oil handling range connects with the Baltic Pipeline and serves at its one end. This comes with a specific terminal for gas loading operations that operates 8-24hrs for cargo.

The 2 phases of pipeline extending onwards span over 1000 kilometres for oil handling. These terminals involve 250 regular employees with camera surveillance measures.

6. Port of Murmansk (Kola Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUMMK Latitude: 68.984125° Longitude: 33.061°

Port of Murmansk

With its location on the northern end of the Arctic circle, Murmansk is the coldest Russian port. It also is the largest to lie on the North of this geography. It is also the geographical North-most amongst the major ports in Russia.

The port helps to house the ice-breaking vessels assisting the larger vessels passing through the Arctic. Its establishment owing to this reason is also quite old, dating back to 1917.

The port operates through its 15 berths, 11 of which are for solid cargo. These berths divide into 2 major port districts or nodes for operation. The general berths operate over 1.5 km in length, while the oil terminals operate on half the figure.

In 2021, Murmansk has figures worth 56 million MT of cargo through its facility. All major bulk cargo operations take place through the gantries at a steady rate. The operates to switch between 16 and 32 MT per hour operation capacity for these.

Meanwhile, the bulk liquid berths vary between 10 to 15 meters in depth. The 3 terminals that use the roadways facility operate the majority of bulk operations.

Despite its challenging location, Murmansk operates round the year. Its expanse has an additional third node for car and container handling tasks. It is the only node with length restrictions, with vessels coming up to 220 meters long.

Major bulk cargo storage facility houses more than 25000 MT in this area. The facility houses over 200 operators for cargo, and less than 100 for ice-breaking requirements.

7. Port of Vladivostok (Vladivostok, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVVO Latitude: 43.087445° Longitude: 131.9022°

Port of Vladivostok

The port of Vladivostok provides Russia with an opportunity to explore the Pacific. It extends towards the south-eastern end and touches the Sea of Japan for the bulk Asian traffic. This facility spreads across 55 hectares and also provides a cultural significance for the Russian landmass.

Vladivostok has a record of handling 24 million MT of cargo for 2021. It is significantly higher than its 13.9 million MT average across the decade. The port’s establishment starts in the 1800s, with free status existence in between.

The terminal operates through its range of 15 berths for general operations. Each of these varies between 10 to 15 meters for depth. The approach through the channel gives a depth of up to 25 meters.

A collection of 200 automatic and semi-automatic loading resources are available overall. This includes the STS, RMG, and RTG facilities operating alongside. The container handling facilities operate round the year for efficient discharging.

Being the south-eastern tip, the Vladivostok network has major relation with Asian ports. 45% and more of their trade flow through Korea, Japan, and China in combination. The layout divides into the universal and the container-specific terminals for operation.

An area of 450,000 sq. meters is available for the warehouse storage and handling of goods. The inter-port handling facilities feature a train map and 2 major truck checkpoints.

Russian Shipping Riches

The sea transport shares a stake worth 112 087 million current USD for the Russian trade. This creates a significant impact for managing international trade, despite the large land area. The concentration of land does not have too big inland waterways, leading to major ocean ports.

Moreover, the testing conditions while operating in the Arctic do not make the cargo movement easier. In such situations, the Russian authorities focus highly on developing the ice-breaking fleet for year-long operations.

With a diverse portfolio, the major ports in Russia handle cargo of every significant use. The country’s latest focus on developing a green corridor is in line with the shipping requirement and future.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-21 03:30

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a 40-metre superyacht sank into the Mediterranean sea after being battered in a storm.

The 40-metre-long luxury vessel was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo overnight on Saturday when it got into trouble around 15km from Italy’s Catanzaro Marina.

Footage shows the yacht, named My Saga, rapidly disappearing beneath waves, as lifeboats appear to float beside it.

The captain sent out a distress call to the Port Authority of Crotone, with officials told the yacht was taking on a significant amount of water from the stern.

The Italian coastguard dispatched two patrol vessels and rescued all four passengers and five crew members on board.

A tugboat sent out at dawn was unable to save the superyacht from sinking because of worsening weather conditions, the Super Yacht Times reports. The Saga finally sank at around 1pm on Sunday.

The outlet reports the yacht, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was flying under the Cayman Islands flag with an all-Italian crew when it sunk.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.

The yacht named My Saga sank on Saturday

It comes after a £6 million superyacht sunk after it went up in flames in the UK on the Torquay harbourside.

The 85ft vessel was consumed by fire , with thick black smoking billowing into the sky.

The yacht reportedly drifted out into the harbour after the fire burnt through ropes securing it to the pier, but the vessel was later secured by the fire service.

A fire service statement revealed that the vessel contained approximately 8000 litres of diesel fuel.

Oceanco Unveils Not One but Two Sleek New 262-Foot Superyachts

Christened Storm and Portofino, the two newcomers both feature a highly optimized and efficient hull designed by Lateral Naval Architects. (All Simply Custom yachts have the same hull, in fact.) Each vessel also offers an impressive gross tonnage of approximately 2,500 to 2,700 GT. Spread across five decks, the living quarters offer ample space for entertaining and seven guest cabins. (The owner’s stateroom is located on the upper deck, while the six guest suites sit on the main deck.)

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Storm Superyacht

Storm and Portofino will be cleaner, greener cruisers, too. Low-emission propulsion is a major focus of the Simply Custom series, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis told Robb Report last October. “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

The two yachts have clear differences, though. Storm is characterized by a sleek, aggressive profile that “combines the elegant, flowing lines of a timeless Bentley coupe with a tapering aft end, giving that sense of speed and elegance from a bygone era,” according to H2 Yacht Design ’s founder and creative director Jonny Horsfield.

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Portofino Superyacht

Portofino, on the other hand, reflects the classic style of its namesake Italian fishing village. Horsfield says the yacht’s timeless design is contrasted by “ruthlessly modern” detailing, such as a flared bow and a dramatically shaped transom. Other hallmarks include a sculpted superstructure, tapered decks, and glass bulwarks.

“Both designs are flexible enough to accommodate any client preferences,” Horsfield adds.

To that end, the Simply Custom series is designed to simplify (and speed up) the customization process for owners without sacrificing quality. Sounds like a win-win.

A guide to Indian Lake, hammered by Thursday's storms

superyacht storm

The Indian Lake area of Ohio was torn by storms Thursday night . Here's a guide to the lake:

Where is Indian Lake?

Indian Lake is in Logan County, about 70 miles northwest of Columbus.

How big is Indian Lake?

The lake is about 5,100 acres, making it the third largest lake in Ohio, behind Grand Lake St. Marys (13,500 acres) in Auglaize and Mercer counties and Mosquito Creek Lake (7,850 acres) in Trumbull County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In addition, Pymatuning Reservoir, which straddles Ohio and Pennsylvania, covers 14,000 acres.

Is Indian Lake natural?

Indian Lake is man-made. According to the ODNR , it began in 1851 as "Old Indian Lake," a feeder lake for the Miami & Erie Canal. A bulkhead completed in 1860 allowed the lake, then called Lewiston Reservoir, to grow to more than 6,300 acres. Although Indian Lake is very shallow, with an average depth of 6 feet, it has largely been spared the algae that has stained other Ohio lakes because of the Indian Lake Watershed Project, established in the 1990s to keep the water clean.

How many people live on Indian Lake?

About 1,300 people live in the lake's largest town, Russells Point, and another 1,200 live down the road in Lakeview, both on the lake's southern shore. Hundreds more live around the lake, many of them in seasonal trailer parks and campgrounds, making the area vulnerable to storms.

What is Indian Lake best known for?

For decades, an amusement park and dance halls along the lake's southern rim drew visitors from miles around and provided the lake's nickname, the "Midwest's Million Dollar Playground." The last bits of the amusement park were torn down in the early 1980s; only the I ndian Lake Rollarena in Russells Point provides a hint of the lake's entertainment past.

Was the 1960s hit "Indian Lake" about this lake?

No. The Cowsills' 1968 Top 10 hit "Indian Lake" is thought to be based on a lake in Upstate New York.

What is housing like around Indian lake?

Much of Indian Lake's homes remain trailers in campgrounds, especially on the north and west sides of the lake. But a growing number of large new homes have been built on the lake this century, especially on the lake's multiple islands and eastern shore. Many of the older, modest homes still sell under $100,000, but newer homes can command more than half a million dollars. The lake's real-estate landed it a spot on the HGTV shows "Island Life" and "Island Hunters."

What impact did the storms have on the lake's state park?

The ODNR has closed Indian Lake State Park, on the west side of the lake, until further notice. "ODNR staff and other emergency crews will assess the impact of the storm and reevaluate the status of the park later today," the department posted Friday . The 8,400-acre park is one of Ohio's four original state parks, created in 1949.

Travel | travel: alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season.

superyacht storm

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

Looking at the most-visited Alaskan port as a proxy for the ship-shape southeastern side of the state, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from early April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Danali-sized jump of 30% compared to the previous mark set in pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which is scheduled to dock in rustic Skagway on April 8. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ) has nearly 100 more after that. Impressive, but two competing companies have staked out larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush; Holland America Line ( hollandamerica.com ) is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises, and at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises ( princess.com ), which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich that they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pitstop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparallel wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau ( traveljuneau.com ). “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears, and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city and other places within this magnificent state.”

Sometimes just seeing a whale's tail is a win when on an Alaskan tour. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port has over 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said. “Make time to enjoy the fascinating culture, spectacular outdoor recreation, unique shopping, amazing restaurants and artist galleries that Juneau and all of Southeast Alaska have to offer.”

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises’ ( celebritycruises.com ) popular Edge class will make her Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line, meaning it’s between the economical mainstream class and pricy luxury level, has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises ( silversea.com ) ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which prizes openness over symmetry and incorporates an unprecedented use of approximately 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

While in Skagway, let happy and hard-working sled dogs take you on a spin around Musher's Camp. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage, and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The near-four-week-long itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn ( seabourn.com ) strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Carnival Cruise Line ( carnival.com ) is staying with a three-ship deployment in Alaska this season. Sharing the workload of 55 roundtrips generally lasting seven to 11 days are Carnival Spirit (2,610 passengers) and Carnival Luminosa (2,260) out of Seattle, and Carnival Miracle (2,667) from San Francisco. Another mainstream cruise line, Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ), has four ships making 85 runs to Alaska from Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage: Ovation of the Seas, (4,905) and older sister Quantum of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (2,543) and Radiance of the Seas (2,466).

Disney Cruise Line ( disneycruise.com ) is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.

32m Overmarine motor yacht Storm sold

The 31.5-metre Mangusta 105 Sport motor yacht Storm has been sold with Dennis Frederiksen of Fraser representing both buyer and seller.

Built of GRP by Overmarine in 2005, she was refitted in 2022 and was "offered in pristine condition having been maintained to a high standard by her long-standing professional crew," according to Frederiksen.

Designed by Stefano Righini , Storm was made for entertaining with its large aft deck, sunbeds and circular al fresco dining table. This exterior space flows into the upper saloon, which is equipped with an opening hardtop and a helm station forward. Below, guests will find the main saloon with a dining table for six to port and a large sofa opposite.

Nine guests are accommodated in four cabins comprising three doubles and a twin. Further quarters provide for up to four crew.

The 167GT yacht has a range of 370 nautical miles – plenty to get from St Tropez to Sardinia – and cruises at 26 knots with a top speed of 32 knots, driven by twin 2,250hp MTU engines. Storm is Bureau Veritas classed and also benefits from zero speed stabilisers.

Lying in Cannes, France, Storm was last asking €2,500,000 with VAT paid.

New York company admits it illegally sold Chinese-made equipment to US military

Aventura Inc. has pleaded guilty to illegally selling Chinese-manufactured security and surveillance equipment to the U.S. military and passing off the wares as American-made.

NEW YORK (Tribune News Service) — A Long Island man has pleaded guilty to illegally selling Chinese-manufactured security and surveillance equipment to the U.S. military and passing off the wares as American-made — creating potential security risks, according to the feds.

Aventura Inc.’s customers included the Navy, the Air Force and the Department of Energy, but the “Made in USA” labels on their products were a lie — and the products, which included items like networked security turnstiles and night-vision cameras, had known cybersecurity vulnerabilities, prosecutors said.

Feds charged Aventura and the members of its senior management with fraud and other offenses in 2019. All of the individual suspects have already pleaded guilty, and on Tuesday, the company entered a guilty plea in Long Island Federal Court.

As part of the plea, the company will dissolve itself and forfeit more than $3 million in seized assets, including a 70-foot yacht, the Tranquilo, owned by CEO Jack Cabasso and his wife, Frances.

“For years, the defendants, while pretending to be a women-owned business, intentionally corrupted the U.S. military supply chain by passing off Chinese-made networked electronics with known vulnerabilities as American-made,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said Tuesday.

Aventura made $112 million in sales revenue between 2008 and 2019, with more than $20 million coming from government contracts, the feds said.

Cabasso, the firm’s owner, took pains to hide the origins of the products it sold, pushing one Chinese company to remove its initials from its circuit boards, the feds allege.

He and another Aventura employee, Wayne Marino, exchanged emails with workers of a Chinese digital video equipment manufacturer, fretting that the Chinese company’s name was visible in server communications.

Aventura built a bogus “lab” to show visitors to its corporate headquarters in Commack, N.Y. Employees would show off a separate, off-limits building, telling visitors classified government work was happening inside. In fact, the company didn’t even own or occupy that building.

Cabasso went as far as emailing a contact with the federal General Services Administration accusing 12 other GSA contractors of selling equipment from a Chinese manufacturer — even though he was importing and reselling goods from that same manufacturer, the feds said.

Aventura’s owner also falsely identified his wife as the company’s CEO in order to present it as a woman-owned small business, which would open the door to more government contracts, according to prosecutors.

Cabasso has a lengthy history of grand larceny and fraud convictions going back to the 1980s and was sentenced to 21 months behind bars in 1992 for tampering with a juror in an earlier federal fraud case against him.

The Cabassos are slated to be sentenced on July 24.
