The New Orleans Steamboat Company is no newcomer to the Mississippi River or American's steamboat heritage.  Our parent company has been operating steamboats longer than any company in the world.  In fact, we've been part of the history of steam transport since 1817, just five years after the first steamboat docked in New Orleans. We're now in our fourth decade of life on the Mississippi.  We've given literally millions of people the experience of one of our country's oldest and richest traditions.

red paddle wheel of steamboat natchez

Steamboat Natchez

The hot steam warms up the brass whistles of the Calliope on the Steamboat Natchez on a chilly winter morning, signaling the start of a journey steeped in history and tradition. This iconic steamboat is a symbol of New Orleans’ rich maritime heritage.

the calliope calls the curious to the riverfront

The old-time melodies of the calliope greet passengers boarding the Steamboat Natchez for a midday cruise. Played by Debbie Fagnano for over three decades, her rendition of “Blue Skies” serves as a unique weather report. The music echoes throughout the French Quarter and draws people to the riverboat dock.

crew and passengers step back in time

Steve Nicoulin is the captain of the Natchez.  He replaced his father, who has worked on the steamboat since it arrived in New Orleans in 1975.  Nicoulin Senior still takes the controls on some river cruises.  The tug of a brass ring in the pilot house shoots steam through the boat’s loud whistle.  The brass ring is the oldest thing on the boat, Nicoulin tells me, explaining, “This ring actually came off an old steamer back in 1889.”

pieces from the past

The Natchez, nearing its 50th anniversary, is powered by steam engines from a 1925 vessel, the Clairton. Twin diesel-fired boilers generate the 200 pounds of steam that drive the boat’s antique piston engines and large paddle wheel. A World War II era communication system, salvaged from a Navy destroyer, connects the captain to the engine room.

steamboat natchez survives fire during renovations

The steamer has an “old school feel”, Nicoulin says, noting how rare the vessels are now.  “When I started with the company, there were six remaining steamboats,” he explains.  “Now there are only two left on the whole Mississippi River.” The Natchez resumed taking tourists on daily trips up and down the Mississippi River after a three year absence. A fire broke out in the steamboat’s generator room while the vessel was undergoing renovations.

A slower pace on the steamboat natchez

Matt Dow, the Director of Marine Operations for the New Orleans Steamboat Company , says it was important to get the Natchez back in service.  He describes it as an icon of New Orleans.  When I asked Dow what makes the river cruises so enjoyable, he quotes Mark Twain.  “Twain said it best,” Dow says. “Someday man will figure out how to go 700 miles per hour.  But we’ll still only want to go seven.”

The Natchez takes passengers on several daily cruises that depart from the New Orleans riverfront near Jackson Square.  The paddle wheeler first travels several miles downstream, passing the Chalmette Battlefield where Andrew Jackson fought the Battle of New Orleans.  Then the steamboat heads back upstream, passing by the French Quarter and St. Louis Cathedral.  The Natchez turns around at the Mississippi River Bridge and returns to the dock.  The cruise is a relaxing ride that begins with the calliope and a jazz band, that preserves bits of river history and tradition on the Mississippi River.

This is a fun two hour cruise up down and back on the river. They do a lunch and dinner cruise. Lunch was a sample of local foods that you will find throughout your visit.

Awesome fun great time with family and friends totally worth it. Very awesome to see the views of New Orleans and if you choose to do the food like we did it was delicious tradition or New Orleans style food.

So I was hoping this was going to be a romantic dinner and view of the city of New Orleans but I was greatly disappointed. They started boarding at 6pm sharp, no major issues. Depending on your dinner time (we selected the 7pm upon reservation) they told us what level we could go to. We went up to the top level where they did have a live jazz band. They were really good, and a bar where we could purchase drinks while we wait for our dinner time. That was probably the best part of the evening. For the record...you're docked the entire time you're eating dinner. There's no trip up and down the Mississippi until about 1.5 hours in. Now. To the part that had me most unimpressed...we went down to the 1st level for dinner and were immediately seated and told our server would be with us. About 20 min later our server finally arrived. I wasn't sure how this went so we asked, do we order etc. Well, it's buffet style so we went up and got "food". That was the WORST food I've ever tasted. It was so bad the only thing I ate was the banana foster and bread pudding desert. The gumbo literally made me want to vomit and tasted sour. After that "meal" we decided to go up and out on deck to enjoy the view. Was it worth it ...NO. If you're still interested in doing it, do NOT pay for the dinner. It's straight trash!

Photo of Kristi C.

We booked the 7pm jazz cruise. After reading reviews we decided the food was not going to be worth the extra price and would detract from our enjoyment of the jazz and the sights. That was a good choice. Although the food on the buffet looked good, we wanted to spend our time outside and enjoying the sight seeing and jazz. We boarded at 6:20 and we were surprised at how few seats were left. We did get a good spot still by the jazz band on the top deck in the back. The band was already playing (probably started at 6 when people could board). We enjoyed the bad and got a couple of drinks The first disappointment we had was that the drinks were subpar. The description of a mojito on the menu sounded so good. Rum, lime, passion fruit juice.... Unfortunately they added none of those things. It was a canned mojito. I watched them open the can and pour it in. Yuck! It taked like club soda. That drink was $9 and was the only one I bought after that disappointment. After the cruise launched, we were able to get a breeze going and the temperature was much more bearable. We were in the sun and it was 100 degrees. Water was $2 a bottle and was very necessary. The band stopped playing when we launched and they told us they were taking a 5 minute break which would be 45 minutes for us(not funny). A narrator talked us through the history and sights we saw along the way until the point where we turned around to come back. There was a good view of the sunset from where we sat. The next disappointment was the band. Although they were good, they only played from 6-7, they dont play on your trip down the river, then they played a few minutes and took another 15 minute break. I am pretty sure they didn't play more than 40 minutes of the cruise itself. Not what I expected from a jazz cruise. On top of that, during their play time, they begged for tips after every song. It is okay to mention tips maybe 3 times during the cruise, but if they are getting paid so little that they have to beg (it was significant) between every song, maybe the cruise company is not paying them adequately and should up their pay and limit the number of times they can ask about tips. Overall. I did like the cruise, but you should be aware of what you are getting.

Sep 5, 2023

The band plays 6-7, and then breaks until the boat is 7.5 miles downriver where the boat turns around. Then they play another 2 sets until they dock. What concerns us most about your review is the actions of the band. This has been sent to band management as that is not acceptable actions for either of our bands. Thank you for alerting us to that.

Nice daytime sail. Narration was interesting . . Lunch was lousy. Fried fish, some kind of sausage, weird rice and red beans slop. Small square of bread pudding tasted better than it looked. Save your dime and eat elsewhere. You can just book the trip without doing the lunch. Jazz band played, they were very good

My wife and I went on the Sunday brunch jazz cruise on the City of New Orleans. The brunch was excellent and the service was superb. Adam, our server, deserves high praise and went above and beyond. Great views of the city and good jazz music by a live band.

A group of us recently experienced the evening jazz cruise while in town. The boarding process was very easy and since we didn't purchase the dinner package we were sent up to the 3rd and 4th decks. The 3rd deck has indoor and outdoor space while the 4th deck is all outdoor. Before starting our tour we were given some facts about the boat and the river and then we were off. The cruise heads down the river 6 miles and then turns around to head back. We enjoyed how quiet and peaceful sitting outside on the decks were. Some of our group had a great time dancing to the band who sounded great. The bar never had a big line and had a nice selection of drinks and snacks to choose from. Overall we had a good time and would like to visit again during the day to try a sightseeing tour.

Aubrie - thanks for the great review of the evening cruise! We appreciate it.

We weren't quite sure what to expect, but we had a 5 star experience and this was one of the highlights of our trip to New Orleans. Awesome day for a riverboat ride - worst part was standing in line to get on the boat! We signed up for the Fall Ya'll package which included drinks and a taste of New Orleans lunch - so worth it! I had seen reviews complaining about the food - but hey - we are foodies and our food was AMAZING. We were served almost as soon as we sat down - fish was tasty, red beans and rice and jambalaya were all good and hot. Nice little bread pudding for dessert too. The drinks were generous and the live 3 pc band playing jazz on the top deck was wonderful and entertaining. Really a lovely overall experience and would highly recommend if you want to slow things down from the hustle and bustle of the french quarter.

I took the evening jazz cruise on the City of New Orleans. I'm not interested in eating on a boat in New Orleans when there are so many great restaurants, so I chose the non-dinner option. It was good to get there early and get on board, though they were having technical problems with the bar on the top level for a while, so I just waited until later to get a drink. The band (located on the top level but piped throughout the ship) was wonderful (though their breaks were overlong). Fortunately, while on break, jazz muzak broke the silence. The music and drinks were nice, but the real joy was the leisurely paddleboat ride down the Mississippi under a full moon, seeing the barges and other tour boats, and then watching the fog roll in as we returned to the dock. There are plenty of chairs and places to sit and watch the world go by. Bring a jacket or sweater because it gets a little cool in the boat, and be aware that the deck gets slick, so walk carefully.

Thanks Pete for the great review

Photo of Patricia M.

The highlight of an evening spent on the City of New Orleans is not the food or the music, or dancing, but the ride itself down the mighty Mississippi that is guided by a voice over the loud speakers. Our tour guide was funny, informative, and a great orator! We did the dinner cruise, which was in all ways but one, less than stellar. The buffet style food was nothing to write home about with over cooked pasta, congealed, dry chicken, green beans that lacked flavor and were also too long in a steam table. The bread was hard and dry. The salad had a beautiful selection of greens but little else, two grape tomatoes, and some vinaigrette that lacked in seasoning. The only thing worth eating was the gumbo. It was amazing and full of flavor. If only it had more than the base and rice in it. Perhaps some andouille sausage, chicken, shrimp, onions or peppers. The dessert was bananas foster which was yum! If the tour line was smart they'd change directions and serve a better salad, nix the buffet, and serve a large bowl of well made original gumbo with fresh bread. The food cost would be the same and their patrons would enjoy a real Cajun meal that tastes good, not to mention the food waste would greatly reduce. The meal service itself was chaotic. Lots of staff running around trying to get tables set and organized and the buffet ready, but the room lacked leadership and several staff members could be heard arguing amongst themselves. Probably not the best representation for a tour. The boat staff at the bars and all around the vessel were extremely kind and friendly. I did notice one young man in uniform help an elderly woman up a set of stairs. That is what I call service from the heart. I watched as he walked up to her on her second step and offered his arm. He was taught well and didn't need to be told. He just served. Well done. The music was wonderful, the only complaint I have is there was nowhere for dancing, which I truly had hoped to do. Overall, we'd definitely return for the experience, however we'd forgo the dinner the next trip.

The tour its self was excellent, we saw loads of gators and the boat guide was good fun. However the average rating is given because we were told to be at the collection point Gray Line Lighthouse for 12:15 for a 12:45 departure, the bus actually arrived at 13:20! No one really seemed to know why this was the case or really seemed to care to be honest. We spent well over an hour waiting and there is nothing but drinks vending machine on site. At the swap site while its a little disorganised it was a really great 2 hours or so Read more Written March 15, 2024

It was a great opportunity to get outside of the city and learn a little a lot along the way. Our tour guide Alton was phenomenal. We found ourselves remembering the information he shared with us for the rest of the trip as we explored the city. Read more Written March 15, 2024

  • Renata G 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Strange tour guide The tour was well organized and on time. The tour guide, Jhon was a bit condescending, making comments like “ I told you this”, “ I’m checking if you are listening “ or “ if you have a complaint write your name on 20$ bill and I will pass it to my manager”.Both the plantation and swamp were interesting to see. The tour guide on the swamp ride, Tom, was a highlight of the trip, such a personality ! Read more Written March 14, 2024
  • vryfeisty 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A Must See Experience Visiting the Whitney Plantation is a must see as it is a significant and sobering experience. It has an effective presentation from the enslaved point of view and had the power to transport you to a different time and place. The memorials and actual stories told by the slaves presented a truly moving experience. The gift shop could use some improvement. A sign where to return the headphones would be helpful. They should have coffee available for purchase as well as some healthy snacks. Read more Written March 14, 2024

The bus ride to the Oak Alley was quite long, but Kate made it educational and entertaining and Tranice kept us safe while driving. The swamp tour was entertaining as the alligators just came out of the hibernation. My kids had fun answering the Trivia questions on the way back and were happy with treats. • paulyu81 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wow!!! Never thought we would get so close to wide alligators. We were so close that you could touch them if you stick out your hands (of course we didn’t). The alligators were pretty small but we did see a mother gator that was easily over 10ft long. The weather was pretty chilly but I guess that’s what kept all the bugs away. The tour is 100% fun and unexpected. Each boat go their own ways so each group would see different things and it really depends on you luck as to what you see. Will 100% go again but maybe do a small group. Complete Guide New Orleans Riverboats

riverboat of new orleans

Mention the mighty Mississippi River and two things come to mind – Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and paddlewheel riverboats.  Mark Twain’s descriptions of the river and the life around it transport us imaginatively.  The rhythmic splashing sound of the giant paddlewheel as the steamboat makes its way around a bend in the most powerful river in the country evokes a romanticized view of America before cars, trains, and airplanes.

Meandering and timeless, the Mississippi is one of the world’s great rivers. Long before the introduction of steam-powered boats in the late 1700s and early 1800s, travel along the river between small towns and outposts, and downriver to New Orleans at its mouth, was by shallow draft, pole-powered riverboats.  Going downstream was easy; the current did the work.  Polling upstream was a challenge.

Travel and trade along the Mississippi became possible with the invention of the steamboat.  The building of the first American steamboat, unsuccessfully by John Fitch in 1787, and successfully in 1807 by Robert Fuller, led to expanded trade, the growth of cities and the expansion of the United States to the west. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, riverboats propelled by steam engines transported people and goods to and from towns along the Mississippi, creating important the trading cities of St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans.

By definition, any boat that is powered by steam is a steamboat.  Most steamboats built in the 19 th and 20 th centuries were propelled by paddle wheels powered by steam. Riverboats with paddle wheels on the sides were side wheelers; those with paddle wheels on the stern were sternwheelers.  While our image of a paddle wheel steamboat is of beautifully appointed Victorian-era, multi-deck vessels called showboats, the floating entertainment centers of the Gilded Age, the majority of steamboats plying the river were utilitarian.  These workhorses came in many sizes and shapes.  Packet boats carried crops and people; towboats pushed barges up and down rivers; ferries carried people; fuelers re-supplied other steamboats; snag boats kept the river navigable by clearing debris.

riverboat of new orleans

By the early 1900s, the westward growth of the country and the American industrial revolution created railroads. Their speed and reach led to the gradual end of steamboats along the Mississippi River.  The nostalgia for them remains in the form of a handful of beautiful replica or restored paddle wheelers used for sightseeing and river cruises.

Two of the most popular replica paddlewheel riverboats are in New Orleans. Steamboat Natchez is steam powered; Creole Queen  Paddle wheeler  is diesel-electric powered.  When visiting New Orleans , slow down the pace on a languid cruise along the Mississippi River on one of them. As the powerful paddles begin their muffled, mesmerizing water sound, the world is transformed by the rhythm of the timeless river and unique skyline sights. Along the shore of the river that has seen comings and goings of people from all over the globe, ancient buildings of Vieux Carré and distinctive landmarks come into view. Cooling breezes soothe and muffled sounds of jazz waft over the water.  It’s magical.

Trusted Tours & Attractions offers several options at discounted prices on both paddlewheel riverboats.  Each has the gracious ambiance of another century with modern amenities.  They offer similar experiences which include:

  • Live narration
  • Amazing skyline and port views
  • Live jazz music
  • Lunch or dinner buffet options and cash bars

Steamboat Natchez

The ninth steamer to bear the name.  Built in 1975, she is a replica of a 19th-century steam-driven paddle wheeler.  Her legacy comes from a long line of steamboat race winners including the most famous,  Natchez VI , whose triumph over Robert E. Lee  is legendary .  All cruises are two hours plus one hour boarding time during which guests are welcomed aboard by a calliope concert.

  • Steamboat Natchez Harbor Cruise –  Choice of morning or afternoon cruise around the harbor. No meal.  Good for visitors who enjoy sightseeing from a unique perspective without the distraction dining.
  • Steamboat Natchez Creole Lunch Cruise –  Choice of morning or afternoon harbor cruise with a Creole buffet lunch.  It’s a great way to enjoy a relaxing outing on the Grand river with wonderful views and a tasty New Orleans lunch.
  • Steamboat Natchez Dinner Cruise –  A romantic evening cruise up the Mississippi River with a lavish Creole dinner buffet and the cash bar. Great for couples and anyone who enjoys a unique evening cruising under the stars along the alluring Mississippi.

riverboat of new orleans

Creole Queen Paddlewheeler

Built in 1993, she has huge 24-foot diameter paddlewheel powered by a fuel-efficient diesel-electric system. Layers of promenade decks and three dining rooms accommodate 1000 people.  Victorian-style interiors, soft lighting, and three dining rooms create an elegant atmosphere. All of her cruises are 2 hours plus an hour of boarding time.

  • Creole Queen Chalmette Battlefield Cruise  – Harbor tour with the added bonus of disembarking at the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park for a tour of the site of 1815 Battle of New Orleans.  Filled with history, landmarks and river lore, it’s a favorite of history buffs.
  • Creole Queen Jazz Cruise – An evening river cruise to experience skyline views at dusk and the river under the stars.  No meal included.  Cash bar.  The perfect way to have cocktails while cruising along the river before a late dinner in the city that never sleeps.
  • Creole Queen Dinner Jazz Cruise –   Same evening river cruise as above plus an expansive Creole buffet dinner. It’s a New Orleans highlight for visitors who want the experience an evening of live jazz, dancing and dinner in Gilded Age elegance.

  • Evening/Dinner Cruises

  • Things to Do in New Orleans

Disclosure:  While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

If you are considering purchasing tourist discount packages, keep in mind that some of these cruises are included at no additional cost in several New Orleans tourist attraction discount passes .

The two most popular cruises are aboard the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler and Steamboat Natchez (details below), but you can hop on a ferry for just a few dollars.

Each offers a variety of cruises to choose from.

We narrowed down our favorites and compiled a list that describes each trip based on experience type, ticket price, and duration.

NATCHEZ STEAMBOAT

The Natchez Steamboat is the ninth boat with the name.

The current boat boasts modern safety mechanisms within a classic, exquisite oak exterior.

It was recently rennovated and is back to cruising down the Mississippi River on a daily basis!

Steamboat Natchez Historical Cruise

Take part in her adventure with daily two-hour jazz cruises, including a daytime cruise or an evening cruise . You can cruise with or without lunch or dinner.

Listen to the Captain and crew, some of whom have been with the ship since the 1975 maiden voyage, operate like the seamen of a time gone by.

This company has received a  4 out of 5 stars  average rating on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

RIVERBOAT CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

This is the newest addition to the New Orleans Steamboat Company, and it took over for the Steamboat Natchez while that vessel was under repair.

Just like the Steamboat Natchez, this boat is also a paddlewheeler, so functionally, very little will change.

The Riverboat City of New Orleans operated all the sightseeing, lunch, brunch, and dinner Jazz cruises for the New Orleans Steamboat Company during the last few years while the Steamboat Natches was undergoing repairs.

Rest assured that even aboard this new vessel there is plenty of room across its multiple decks to accommodate plenty of guests and fill in for its sister boat.

CREOLE QUEEN PADDLEWHEELER

Built in 1983 with the esteem and allure of the late 1850s paddlewheelers, the Creole Queen features an enormous 24-foot paddlewheel and modern amenities for elegance and safety.

Browse the list of tours below to pick which experience is best for you; gather on the 1,000-passenger deck for live music, dancing, a history lesson, or maybe enjoy lunch or dinner.

This vessel's review profile is a tad lower than its competitor's but still good with an overall average rating of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

DAYTIME CRUISES WITH OPTIONAL LUNCH

There are basically two different cruises to choose from, one from each company.

The main differences seem to be that the Creole Queen includes a stop at Chalmette Battlefield at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

It is also included at no extra charge with the purchase of either the New Orleans Sightseeing Pass or the Go City New Orleans Pass .

The Steamboat Natchez offers jazz music on the lunch cruise during the high season.

Steamboat Natchez Harbor Jazz Cruise

An overwhelming majority of reviews for this jazz cruise are very positive ( read the reviews ).

Some reviewers have even described their band as “magnificent,” suggesting that the music played onboard was absolutely wonderful.

Some customers feel that the experience is a bit too touristy, but they are definitely in the minority.

Most guests leave excellent feedback stating that they loved this musical trip on the Natchez. This activity is particularly popular among couples.

NOTE: After a year or two in repairs, the newly rennovated Steamboat Natchez is finally offering cruises in New Orleans as of November 2023.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Live narration of the history of the area
  • Live jazz concert
  • Steam Engine room open to visitors
  • Lunch (optional) in the dining area onboard

Unlike their harbor cruise, this boat trip will take you down the Mississippi River.

Ratings for this excursion are similarly excellent, but it’s worth noting that not everyone was thrilled with the food selection ( read the reviews ).

NOTE: Although this cruise was being offered on the Riverboat City of New Orleans for the last year or two, the newly rennovated Steamboat Natchez is once again the vessel you'll be riding during this outing!

CANAL STREET/ALGIERS POINT FERRY

In operation since 1827, this ferry travels across the Mississippi River along Canal Street and ends at the second oldest neighborhood of New Orleans; Algiers Point.

Unlike the paddlewheeler or steamboat, the ferry offers a cheap trip across the river from Canal Street. Just ask the locals who use this as their commute!

Once you arrive, consider taking our self-guided walking tour of Algiers Point .

This company has received a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor.

There are a few negative reviews, but most of them seem to come from customers who were expecting the typical tourist experience.

Although they don’t offer the same range of services as a boat tour or cruise, it’s clear that a lot of their customers are more than pleased with the transportation they provide.

Cost (cash only):

  • Pedestrian $2 each way
  • Senior (65+) $1
  • Children (2 & under) Free

In particular, both of the services offered through this combo ticket are positively reviewed by their customers.

Much like the Steamboat Natchez, the Super City Bus Tour also enjoys mostly positive ratings.

We absolutely loved this excursion for my bach! It was easy to get tickets printed at the dock and the boat had indoor and outdoor spaces. Was super fun even though it started our rainy and was a different experience for out of town friends.

The booze, brunch & jazz cruise was amazing. The food was great, classic New Orleans style brunch. Jumbo, grits, bacon. The whole works. The music was the best part. Just was just something magical about listening to jazz while sailing the Mississippi River was an experience of a life time. The Bach app really helped facilitate and enjoy the experience overall. If I go back to New Orleans for whatever reason. I would deff do the brunch jazz cruise again!

We had so much fun on the booze brunch and jazz cruise! The food and drinks were amazing, the boat itself was very nice and the ride was enjoyable. Perfect excursion for a bachelor/bachelorette party and would do it again!

What's more fun than brunch on the water with your besties? JAZZ BRUNCH on a beautiful riverboat in NOLA. This is an experience your girls are sure to love that will leave you with memories that will last you a lifetime!

Great for any size group! We made friends with a bachelor party, and everyone got up to dance to the live jazz! Great specialty drinks that won’t break the bank.

We loved booking this experience because it was relaxing and a meal was included. It was neat to see all of the sights and on boarding was a breeze. The weather was perfect! It was a lot of fun and I would do it again.

We loved the Booze, Brunch, & Jazz Cruise. First, the food on this was actually AMAZING. I'm a foodie, so I have high standards. As soon as you sit down, you're fed. (My kind of place). We also had a blast on the second deck listening to the jazz band, dancing, and taking photos outside with our crew. The cruise wasn't too long or too short, and it definitely felt like a very "New Orleans" experience. We loved it!

I truly enjoyed myself on the boat. The food/drink options were phenomenal and the jazz played their hearts out!

More cruise passengers choose New Orleans to start of their vacations in 2023

M ore passengers started their cruise vacations from New Orleans as numbers show Port of New Orleans cruises are returning to pre-pandemic levels.

The Port of New Orleans finished 2023 with nearly 1.2 million cruise passenger movements and renewed commitments to the New Orleans cruise market from both oceangoing and river cruise lines, according to Port NOLA.

New Orleans is the sixth-largest cruise port in the United States, the website reported, and demand for cruising from the Big Easy is growing for both Caribbean and river itineraries. With destinations of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Cozumel, Mexico and Key West, the cruise lines include most Caribbean destinations and Mississippi River cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line homeports two year-round vessels from Port NOLA, and in 2024 Carnival celebrates its 30 th  year of cruising from New Orleans. Norwegian Cruise Line also will renew for five more years with additional sailings and a new ship.

The release also stated, Disney Cruise Line returned to the Big Easy with the Disney Magic in January, while Royal Caribbean returns with a new vessel, the “Brilliance of the Seas” in November 2024. The port is also seeing record growth in river cruises, with nine homeported vessels including America’s first Viking Cruise that began sailing in 2022.

Ninety percent of cruise guests travel from out-of-state, with 73% spending one or two days in New Orleans either before or after their cruise, the release said. That generates more than 300,000 hotel room nights in New Orleans and more than $125 million in local spending each year.

"New Orleans is one of the most popular pre- and post-cruise destinations in the country, which is a tribute to our excellent partners at the Port of New Orleans as well as the work of our team at New Orleans and Co.,” said Walter J. Leger III, President and CEO of New Orleans and Co. “Travel drives our economy, but visitors don’t just show up. In a highly competitive marketplace, travelers have choices, and we have to earn their business through aggressive sales and promotion."

The entire cruise industry came to a complete halt in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Topping pre-pandemic levels set in February 2020 with 154,409 passenger movements and 31 vessel calls, Port NOLA set a new passenger record in March 2023 for oceangoing and river cruises.

“This is really encouraging as our cruise business drives tourism and contributes significantly to the hospitality industry," said Port NOLA President and CEO Brandy D. Christian. "We want to thank all our cruise line and hospitality partners as we work together to make cruising out of New Orleans two vacations in one."

South of New Orleans, a project to divert the Mississippi river could restore ecosystems destroyed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and build new land to protect against sea level rise

Silt from the centre of the US runs down the Mississippi river to the sea

Gerald Herbert/ AP / Alamy

The Mississippi river flows past New Orleans, Louisiana, at an average rate of about 17,000 cubic metres per second, carrying more than a hundred million tonnes of sediment from the middle of the US into the Gulf of Mexico each year. Standing along its shore on land made of such sediment, I watch the silt spin in brown eddies in the river. That mud might soon be put to use.

Just Askin': What is the World Peace Bell and why did it end up in Newport?

The World Peace Bell rings at the end of the Rand Paul Rally in Newport Saturday.

The Enquirer's  Just Askin' series  aims to answer the questions that no one seems to have an answer for, not even Google .

In the heart of Newport, there's a giant swinging bell.

Those who cross the Taylor Southgate Bridge from Ohio to Kentucky will be greeted by the World Peace Bell at Fourth and York streets.

Standing 12 feet tall and weighing 66,000 pounds, it's the world's largest free-swinging bell.

A new development to be established at that site is drawing attention to the world-renowned bell. The plan includes two hotels, office space, retail shops, a parking garage and possibly condos.

The bell tolled for the first time in the U.S. when it rang in the New Year at midnight on Jan. 1, 2000, at the site where it now sits.

What is the story behind the Newport World Peace Bell and why is it so significant?

If you ask Wayne Carlisle, who commissioned the World Peace Bell in the 1990s, he'd tell you the message behind the landmark makes it worthwhile.

"I thought, what's going to happen on the millennium? It would be a shame to turn over from the 1900s to 2000 without a significant thing to remember it from," he said.

For whom does the World Peace Bell toll? It's not about who, Carlisle said. It's for what it tolls, which is freedom and peace.

Kentucky State Parks describes it as a "magnificent bell" that "rings with a powerful, awe-inspiring, deep resonant tone."

It stays at the same site it first rang because that's where Carlisle, a lifelong Newport resident who paid for it, wanted it. He declined to say how much it cost.

It was a long journey to get the metal behemoth to Northern Kentucky.

It was crafted at a shipbuilding yard in Nantes, France, because no foundry in the U.S. could cast a bell its size. On Dec. 11, 1998, workers began the task. It took five minutes and 37 seconds to pour the molten metal into the cast, and three weeks to cool down.

It landed in the U.S. in New Orleans in 1999 after a months-long boat voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Then another boat ride, this one up the Mississippi River, to the Kentucky River, then to the Ohio where it would eventually end up in Northern Kentucky. It made 12 stops along the rivers to its final destination, where thousands of onlookers came to view the majestic bell.

Peacetime in the U.S. ended on Sept. 11, 2001, less than two years after the bell was installed. Carslisle still hoped the bell's message would ring true as the U.S. went to war.

"The bell is still here. It still represents what it’s for, and it’s very important, for our value in life is freedom and peace," he said.

New Jersey men charged in Hudson River boating accident that killed 2 passengers

riverboat of new orleans

Two men have been charged for causing the deaths of a 7-year-old boy and a 48-year-old woman after a chartered boat capsized in the Hudson River in 2022, sending more than a dozen people aboard into the water, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.

Richard Cruz, 32, and Jaime Pinilla Gomez, 25, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, were both charged with one count of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said in a news release . Cruz and Gomez each face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Lindelia Vasquez and her nephew, Julian Vasquez, were among a group of family and friends who chartered the boat for a Hudson River tour when it capsized on July 12, 2022. Victims were trapped under the boat when it flipped over near Pier 86,  which is in front of the docked aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, a popular tourist destination.

Prosecutors said Gomez was one of the 13 people who were thrown overboard. But Lindelia Vasquez and Julian Vasquez, who were from Colombia, drowned after being trapped beneath the boat, according to prosecutors.

Cruz and Gomez had been conducting boat tours in the months leading up to the incident, but prosecutors said the two did not have the required U.S. Coast Guard credentials and certifications to do so.

"Federal regulations and safety protocols exist to ensure that captains and operators of commercial vessels keep passengers safe," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. "The defendants allegedly flouted those regulations, recklessly disregarded safety protocols, operated the vessel at an unsafe speed in hazardous conditions, and overloaded the vessel with too many passengers on board. And the result was tragic — a young boy and a woman were trapped under the vessel and drowned after the vessel capsized."

Miami tour boat crash: More than a dozen injured after tour boat and charter boat crash in Miami waters, officials

What happened on July 12, 2022?

Around 2:40 p.m. on July 12, 2022, the boatcapsized in the Hudson River, according to authorities. All 13 people aboard the vessel were thrown into the water.

Ferries that were operating nearby and emergency responders, including the New York City Police Department’s Harbor Unit and the New York City Fire Department’s Dive Rescue Team, rushed to the scene to help the victims out of the water.

According to prosecutors, Gomez and 10 others were transported to hospitals in Manhattan and survived. About 25 minutes after the vessel capsized, authorities found Lindelia Vasquez and Julian Vasquez unconscious.

The two victims were trapped underneath the boat and were subsequently pronounced deceased, prosecutors said. The cause of death was drowning.

Prosecutors say boat operators were negligent

Cruz had purchased the boat, which he called Stimulus Money, about three months before the capsizing, according to a complaint. He was the owner and captain of the vessel while Gomez was the pilot.

The two men conducted tours on the vessel for paying customers on multiple occasions in the months before the capsizing, the complaint stated. But neither had obtained the required U.S. Coast Guard credentials and certifications to operate the tours.

Prosecutors allege that the two men's negligent actions and omissions caused the capsizing and the two deaths. In addition to their lack of credentials, prosecutors said Cruz and Gomez had 13 people on board — which exceeded the boat's maximum capacity.

Prosecutors also said Cruz and Gomez had operated the vessel at a high rate of speed while a small craft advisory was in effect due to high winds and heavy seas. Prosecutors claimed that Gomez — who was described as an "insufficiently experienced mariner" — dangerously piloted the vessel.

They also claimed that Gomez had rapidly accelerated one engine of the boat immediately before the capsizing, which led to the overturning of the vessel, and wasn't wearing a safety device that contributed to the engine continuing to operate even after Gomez shifted.

Death Valley's 'Lake Manly' shrinking: Lake will no longer take any boats, Park Service says

Boating accidents across the U.S.

The primary factors that lead to boating accidents are inattention, inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure, according to the  National Safe Boating Council .

Experts say that boating accidents are easily preventable and boating is comparatively safer than driving a car, according to Paul Barnard, recreational boating safety program manager at the U.S. Coast Guard Eighth District in New Orleans.

"Most boating fatalities and nonfatal accidents could have been easily preventable through a few simple safety measures," Barnard said.

Recreational boating is a popular leisure activity in the United States, with more than 87 million people taking part annually, according to VisitTheUSA.com . But there are still risks and thousands of recreational boating accidents happen each year.

In 2022, the U.S. Coast Guard counted 4,040 accidents that involved 636 deaths and 2,222 injuries. In that year, about 74% of all boating deaths occurred on a boat where the operator did not receive formal boating safety training.

Some accidents have involved tour boats in recent years. In 2018, 17 people were killed after a tourist boat sank in Missouri during a storm. Three employees were each charged with 17 counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in 2021, but those charges were later dismissed.

Last year, one person died after a boat capsized during a tour of a historic underground cavern system in Lockport, New York. All 29 people on board were thrown into the water when the vessel tipped over toward the end of the roughly 300-foot route, the Associated Press reported.
