STAR OF THE SEA Enquiry

Reia - From the moment our transport driver from Verona contacted the Captain for directions to the moment the crew waited at port for our taxis to arrive in Bonafaccio - we were very well taken care of!!! Exceptional service from every member of the crew. We talked daily with Captain Mats about the next day’s journey, making adjustments as needed. The stewardesses never stopped asking what they could do to assist whether a drink, a towel, a snack etc. Karina, the chief stewardess is a perfectionist about her work and those she manages. Jefferson, the mate, has been on the yacht the longest (6 years) and its easy to understand why. He cares for his guests with kid gloves. Gracious and kind - he tendered us to see spectacular coves, into ports, joy rides, water skiing etc. Plus he does so much on board to keep things in check for the Captain taking great pride in Star of the Sea. Magnus, the engineer, gave us great confidence that all was well and if something went wrong, he would solve the problem. The best was seeing him take Tom's mother at 82 on the jet ski...at full speed. It was a joy ride of her life. Jimmy, the new chef, was loved by all. Flexible, open to our ideas, asking everyday about our requests for the next day. Very creative as a chef and we loved his presentations as well as his food combinations. Always a new surprise. Mats runs a serious ship and you can see he commands tremendous respect from all. We felt very safe with him in charge. The ship itself was a beautiful setting and size for our family. Plenty of space not to be on top of each other. All meals except one large dinner were outside on the upper deck. Spectacular views and sea breezes. The crew gave us our space for many family deep conversations, always being attentive yet discreet when needed. Cabins worked out perfectly. The stewardesses always keeping them in perfect order and timely. The table settings for every meal were beautiful and always a little different - beautiful china, crystal, casual settings, placemats, decorations etc. We had several special occasions I planned for every other night, they set things up perfectly as I had requested and then some. Other than lunch the first day we had every meal on the yacht. If you need any references for Star of the Sea or you as a yacht broker, please don't hesitate to email us. The entire experience as you have read was superior and exceeded our dreams and expectations. J.H from the USA chartered in Italy June

Motor Yacht

Yacht charter, star of the sea.

Motor Yacht STAR OF THE SEA is one of very few motor yachts based in Bequia, in the Grenadines. This fantastic 34 meter classic Benetti is in great condition and she exudes comfort and elegance.

I recently visited STAR OF THE SEA in Bequia to meet the rest of the crew and to inspect her again. Despite being an older yacht, this is a really charming boat with an immaculately kept interior. She is a great old classic.

The crew is attentive, friendly and generally, a really wonderful team lead by the British captain, Nigel Hewitt. The chef is fantastic and imaginative in creating the meals as well as presenting them.

There is a great space on board STAR OF THE SEA. She can accommodate up to 12 guests in her 6 en suite cabins (and up to 60 guests for static events): - Master cabin on the main deck - VIP double cabin - Double cabin - Three twin cabins

The Grenadines are an incredibly beautiful part of the Caribbean with some wonderful areas and unbelievably deep colours of turquoise. I found it to be a peaceful, easy going area and very friendly too. Tobago Cays are a different world, where the guests could swim with turtles, see Iguanas and taste some of the best Lobster in the area. There are many options and we’d be working with you and the captain on creating the most suitable charter itinerary.

Meet Star of the Sea, Singapore’s largest yacht available for charter

motor yacht star of the sea

Star of the Sea is the latest addition to Evangeline Wong’s existing fleet of yachts, who’s also the founder of Valencia Yachts, one of the leading yacht chartering operators in Singapore

Editor’s note:  See other  Mind Your Business  interviews  here .

Yacht charter owner Evangeline Wong distinctly recalls the first time she laid eyes on a Leopard catamaran during the 2014 Singapore Yacht Show . It was love at first sight, kickstarting a personal affair with yachting that eventually blossomed into a full-fledged yacht chartering business. She founded Valencia Yachts in 2015, which has since grown into one of the largest yacht chartering operators in Singapore, before branching out with another company called Maximum Yachts .

To-date, her crowning achievement lies in Star of the Sea, which recently made its debut in the local yacht chartering scene. At 128 feet, the superyacht is the largest yacht available for charter in Singapore. Having undergone a refurbishment this year, the high-performance vessel boasts swanky interiors that go hand in hand with her sleek exterior.

“Star of the Sea is a game-changer in Singapore’s yacht-chartering scene” says Wong. “Her addition to our existing fleet is a response to our consumers’ growing demand for an ever-increasing affluent and luxurious lifestyle.”

evangeline wong

What are some of the benefits of chartering a yacht as compared to owning one?

Aspiring first-time yacht owners should recognise that it’s a lot of work, honestly. A yacht’s usage must justify the exorbitant maintenance costs and efforts. They must also be able to get a berth in Singapore. In contrast, chartering a yacht is hassle-free. There are no headaches with regards to hiring a crew, or racking up any recurring berthing, maintenance or replacement costs.

What are some of the current yacht chartering trends in Singapore?

There’s been an increasing demand over the years for bigger builds. In the past, it used to be limited to 30 or 40-footers. Now, larger yachts are coming into play and there’s been a growing interest in 50-footers and beyond.

Space is a premium, especially on a yacht—nowhere more so than on a superyacht, where the sheer size, decor and detailing are a cut above the rest. It represents a different kind of lifestyle, which will continue to gain traction in the future.

What can guests expect onboard Star of the Sea?

The story behind Star of the Sea is very special to me and my family. She’s truly a one-of-a-kind superyacht, having been built here in Singapore. We named her Star of the Sea to symbolise an abundance of blessings and safe voyages out at sea.

When berthed, Star of the Sea carries up to 150 passengers, making her ideal for dockside parties and corporate events. Out at sea, she can accommodate 50 guests across six spacious cabins, perfect for cruising to the exotic Anambas or Tioman islands.

On the main deck, you’ll find an indoor wine bar and 14-seater dining table, with plenty of social areas onboard. There’s also a karaoke lounge and outdoor jacuzzi on the upper deck, which boasts unobstructed views of the sea. Meanwhile, the expansive flybridge is furnished with a full cocktail and sushi bar, with the option for outdoor dining as well.

For those who prefer being out on the water, there’s a host of water toys and equipment onboard, such as a six-man tender, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.

What are some of the other notable yachts in your fleet?

The make and design of each yacht will naturally appeal to different groups of people, depending on their budgets, group sizes and the type of occasion—it could be a corporate meeting, private party, weekend getaway or perhaps a wedding proposal.

Victoria, a Leopard 39 PC, and Valencia, a Leopard 51 FT, are best-suited for smaller families as they feature ergonomic designs, with an emphasis on outdoor spaces. Our Maximum 1 and 2 catamarans, on the other hand, have ample indoor spaces and are great for mid-sized groups. Of course, those yearning for a top-of-the-line experience should look no further than Star of the Sea, our latest pride and joy.

In the future, we plan to expand the yacht chartering business, not just locally but to extend the concept and level of service to overseas markets too.

Billionaires are getting ready for summer with wildly spectacular superyachts

  • Superyachts, the most expensive asset  a billionaire can own, are pushing the boundaries of luxury.
  • The boats, which cost eight or nine figures, are getting larger and include more features than ever.
  • From massage rooms to basketball courts, here's what the world's richest want on board.

Insider Today

For many wealthy boat owners, a private spa is a must-have on board. A sauna is a nice touch. A Jet Ski or two makes days at sea way more fun. And if you don't have someone on board who can whip up a Michelin-star-worthy meal , you might as well stay on land.

In the world of massive yachts , there's no such thing as too much. After all, if someone spends eight or nine figures to design the vessel of their dreams — or at least $500,000 a week to charter one — more is more.

"Yachting. It's not rational; it's emotional," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where dozens of superyachts — often defined as vessels over 30 meters in length — were on display.

And while there are certain classic features, such as jacuzzis and bars, what superyacht owners want is evolving, insiders at the show said. That might mean more crew members, more space for helicopters, or more water toys, but might also include manicure salons and putting greens.

"The bar of what is the baseline expectation has increased exponentially just over the last four or five years," Anders KurtĂŠn, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. Clients are "spending more time on the boat and really wanting to extend the lifestyle they lead on the shore."

A lot of this can be chalked up to the pandemic. Superyacht purchases and charters spiked as life and luxury travel on land screeched to a halt. While the market has moderated slightly, the number of superyachts on order — 1,166 as of September, according to Boat International's Global Order Book — is still above pre-pandemic norms.

"What the pandemic really showed is that the appetite for being out there at sea, sort of living the marine lifestyle, is still as valid as ever," KurtĂŠn said.

That means there's a lot of money on the water. The total value of the 203 superyachts over 30 meters delivered last year was $6.4 billion, according to data from SuperYacht Times. New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco , Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even used superyachts at the Palm Beach show cost as much as $75 million.

And it's not just traditional buyers like retired wealthy couples looking for a place to relax or celebrities looking for a place to party away from the paparazzi. New clients are often younger and have families, so want areas to work and watch movies . They also want pricey water toys, access to fitness equipment, or even pizza ovens for picky eaters.

"This would've never happened in the nineties," said Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts. "You would go with your beautiful woman, Champagne — the idea of yachting was much more showing off with your jacuzzi and things like that."

Pure opulence has made room for function.

When Benetti's Nabila set sail in 1980, its 50-person crew, gold-and-diamond-encrusted interiors, and lavish parties captured headlines and even inspired the Queen song "Kashoggi's Ship."(Seven years later, Donald Trump bought Nabila for $30 million , renaming her the Trump Princess.)

"Life on board was considered very formal — big formal dining rooms, boats were high on the water, you would be segregated from the rest of the world," Vitelli said, remembering another client who insisted on a replica of the Sistine Chapel above the dining table.

But the ostentatious, palatial-like interiors that used to be highlighted in yacht brochures have made way for lists of more functional features .

Related stories

Rather than esoteric novelties like an extra-large safe for rifles that one builder had to construct per a Russian yacht owner's request , the superyachts on display at the Palm Beach show featured basketball courts, saunas, and ice baths.

Owners want elevators and luxury gyms. Pampering options, be it a massage room, manicure station, or a professional-grade facial machine, are a dime a dozen. Some bathrooms have fancy Toto toilets, which can cost around $20,000.

Sterns (that's the back of the boat) used to be built high to guard guests' privacy. Now, they're built as "beach clubs" — an open swim platform.

And what good is a massage room if no one on board can give one? Many superyachts can hold twice as many crew members as guests, if not more. One broker, representing a boat that didn't have a masseuse, said it could be quite a "tricky" issue because if a charter wants one, they have to find someone who can massage guests and "pull their weight with the crew."

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," KurtĂŠn said.

Of course, a crew comes at a cost . Most are considered full-time employees, requiring salaries and benefits like health insurance. Captains, first mates, and chief engineers often make six figures a year. That's without tips; a charter guest will typically spend six figures on gratuities for the crew who worked during a weeklong vacation.

For the superrich, there must be room for toys.

It's not just the onboard amenities that count. What's known as "toys" in the industry — water slides, eFoils, Jet Skis, and underwater scuba diving jets — are popular, and costs range from merely hundreds of dollars (banana boats) to millions ( submersibles , which are still popular despite the recent tragedy).

" Tenders and toys, the sky seems to be the limit," KurtĂŠn said. "More is more."

If you can't fit all those toys in the yacht's storage space, you can just use another boat. Jeff Bezos' support yacht is a superyacht in itself, measuring 75 meters and costing tens of millions of dollars. (His main yacht, Koru , cost a reported $500 million.)

Support yachts are also faster, meaning the crew can get to a destination first and set up the Jet Skis, seapools, and the like, Dazert said. "By the time the owner arrives on the main yacht, everything's set up, and he can go and have fun."

Even tenders, the smaller vessel that brings guests from the ship to the shore, are getting glow-ups. The Nero, a 90-meter beauty available to charter for about $500,000 a week and modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship, has custom-built tenders to match the design. The most expensive ones often cost seven figures. Nero has three.

"It used to be a tender was a tender," Jeffrey Beneville, who handles yacht insurance at NFP, told BI. "Now they're called limousine tenders. Think of an incredibly luxurious gondola that's got a hard top so nobody's hair gets mussed when they're being dropped off at the Monaco Yacht Club ."

One thing that clearly hasn't changed in superyachting: showing off. If the boat next door at the marina has an indoor-outdoor cinema, it's natural to want one too. Ditto a wine cellar or helipad.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Vitelli, whose company is behind the Lana yacht Bill Gates chartered for a birthday party three years ago, said. "You push it a little more."

And that's a boon for yacht makers and brokers catering to the superrich.

"Our job is to make clients' dreams come true," KurtĂŠn said.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

motor yacht star of the sea

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

motor yacht star of the sea

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

motor yacht star of the sea

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

motor yacht star of the sea

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

motor yacht star of the sea

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

motor yacht star of the sea

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

motor yacht star of the sea

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Moscow - Russian Rivers and Waterways Port of Call

motor yacht star of the sea

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow. Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

View of Downtown Moscow from Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

View of the Mockba River in Moscow, Russia

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer (Cathedral of Christ the Savior) in Moscow

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

Vendors' Market and Ski Jump at Sparrow Hills in Moscow

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

Russian Soldiers' Memorial in Victory Park in Moscow

Matryoshka dolls for sale in moscow.

I thought this display of dolls was beautiful! The Matryoshka nesting dolls range in price from just a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

Moscow Metro Station at the Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square)

This station near Red Square has many statues honoring the workers of Russia.

Moscow Metro Station near Victory Park

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

Red Square in Moscow

Red Square in Moscow is a must-see for visitors to the capital city of Russia.

The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin is a favorite of Moscow tourists. Inside these walls are buildings for the government of Russia, cathedrals, and the wonderful State Armory museum.

Taras Bulba Restaurant in Moscow

We enjoyed a traditional Ukrainian lunch at this cute restaurant in Moscow before checking in at our hotel.

Buses Wait for Passengers Outside Museum

River cruise tour groups are usually divided into groups for the duration of the tour. Each group had their own bus when touring.

Military Airplanes at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

Although much of the military museum was indoors, there was quite a collection of planes, helicopters, missile launchers, and tanks outside.

Foreign Ministry Building, One of Moscow's Seven Stalinist-Gothic Skyscrapers

Seven skyscrapers with layers giving them a "wedding cake" appearance dot the Moscow skyline. The style is considered Stalinist-Gothic.

Russian and American War Veterans at the Central Museum of Armed Forces

Meeting with some World War II Russian War veterans was a highlight of our day at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow.

Rocket Launchers and Missiles at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow

The inside of this museum is particularly impressive, but you will need a guide since all of the signage is only in Russian.

Old Arbat Pedestrian Shopping Area in Moscow

We all enjoyed exploring the shops on this mile-long pedestrian shopping area.

Food prices were high in the tourist attraction, with two small pizzas, two small beers, and a bottle of water at an outdoor cafe costing $40. Many of our group ate at the large McDonalds, where prices were more reasonable.

Female Cosmonaut Model at Star City Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow

Female cosmonauts play an important role in the Russian space program. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova from Yaroslavl was the first woman in space.

Souvenir Shop in Old Arbat Shopping Area in Moscow

The area of Old Arbat had many English signs to attract the tourist trade.

Centrifuge at Star City Outside Moscow, Russia

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Cosmonaut's Bathroom Facilities on First Space Flights at Star City

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

Star City Tank Used for Cosmonaut Weightlessness Training near Moscow

This 12-meter deep pool is used to simulate weightlessness training. The pool is flooded and the cosmonauts perform repair tasks on the model of the International Space Station. SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

Mir Space Station Replica at Star City near Moscow

The original Mir disintegrated when it fell to earth in 2001. Mir, which means peace in Russian, was launched in 1986.

Marvel Paull with Statue of Yuri Gagarin at Star City near Moscow

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and the Star City Cosmonaut training center was named after him in 1968.

River Cruise Passengers with Yuri Onufrienko, Russian Cosmonaut at Star City

In case you can't tell, Yuri is the one in the middle. My famous traveling mother, Marvel Paull, is on the left and Dick, a cruise friend is on the right.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

Cosmonaut Space Suit at Star City near Moscow

Cosmonauts sit in this position on take off. Thanks to Jerry G. for the tip about the sign. It says, "Don't touch!"

Stained Glass Window at Star City near Moscow

Program directors at farewell dinner in moscow.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

I visited the Kremlin when in Moscow on a Russian Waterways cruise tour from St. Petersburg.

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Red Square's name has nothing to do with Communism or Soviet Russia. The old Russian word for "beautiful" and "red" was the same; the square was supposed to be called "Beautiful Square". Red Square has been the center of Moscow activity since the 16th century when the Tsar cleared the area and allowed vendors, shoppers, and businesses to fill the square. Today this square is surrounded by the Moscow Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, GUM Shopping Mall , and St. Basil's Cathedral .

Many of the important events of the last three hundred years in Russia have been marked by parades or demonstrations in Red Square. Anyone who enters Red Square will have memories from TV or movie reels of this magnificent public square. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War era can remember the parades of soldiers, tanks, and other armaments past Lenin's Tomb just outside the Kremlin Wall. The World War II generation remembers Red Square as the site of a huge victory celebration at the end of the war.

Sea of blue nothing new for Indiana State. But at Hinkle? 'It felt like a home game.'

motor yacht star of the sea

INDIANAPOLIS — Playing in front of capacity crowds is nothing new for Indiana State, this spring especially, as the Sycamore faithful packed the Hulman Center to support their team during its NIT run. The community is heavily invested in their men’s basketball team and the program’s high-scoring, high-flying style of play is perfectly suited for such ravenous supporters.

So of course there was a sea of blue — a very, very loud sea of blue — there to greet the top-seeded Sycamores as they took the floor at Hinkle Fieldhouse for the NIT semifinals Tuesday.

“It felt like a home game,” senior Xavier Bledson said following Indiana State's 100-90 win over No. 2-seed Utah. "The atmosphere is crazy, they're looking down on you. It's a different feeling. It felt amazing."

Doyel: ISU reaches NIT final, captivating fans but setting up one last heartache

'Appointment TV.' Indiana State thrills in NIT, continuing to make its March Madness case

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

The scene Tuesday was in stark contrast to what Utah coach Smith experienced Monday, describing a “peaceful" and almost "serene" atmosphere that greeted the Utes when they arrived for practice. "Anybody who understands basketball understands the tradition of this amazing place. It was really kind of calming,” he said.

"Tonight was obviously a different vibe."

Smith spent the week blasting music and crowd noise, and installing viral and non-verbal calls in preparation for the hostile environment. And there were still a couple occasions in the first half when only four of the five Utah players knew what play was being run. "(The fans) showed up and you could certainly feel that," Smith said.

The Sycamore faithful helped spur the team's first major run of the second half, feeding off the electricity of a no-look, underhand pass from Julian Larry to Robbie Avila underneath the basket that staked ISU to a three-point lead and brought chants of "I-S-U" raining down from the capacity crowd.

That was the main highlight from ISU's game-tilting 10-2 run early in the second half. Those involved agreed on the crowd's role in fueling it and the game flow illustrates its influence on the final result with the Sycamores gradually ceding control from there.

"When that happened, I was like, 'Oh yeah, we might be up to something,'" Bledson said. "It's time. It's winning time, for sure."

On a night when the Sycamores scored 100 points, knocked down 12 3-pointers, shot 57% from the field and had four different players score in double figures, one of their biggest stars was the hometown kid, Pike alum Ryan Conwell.

Back at Hinkle Fieldhouse for the first time as a player, he reflected on Butler games he attended with a childhood friend when they were young. "It's crazy how it came full circle," Conwell said.

"Full circle" is an apt label for the sophomore's journey back to Hinkle Fieldhouse, and he marked the occasion with a career performance: 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting with four 3s, plus six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block to help the Sycamores (32-6) advance to Thursday's NIT championship game opposite Seton Hall.

There's something about playing in Indianapolis that brings out the best in the 6-4 sophomore, coach Josh Schertz observed, citing Conwell's 27 points at Gainbridge Fieldhouse vs. Ball State in December.

"Being around the home folks gets him excited," Schertz laughed. "But what a phenomenal player, a special player. And as good as he is as a player — he's elite — he's an even better human being."

The sea of blue that greeted the Trees on Tuesday may pale in comparison to what’s in store for Thursday.

"It's an amazing feeling to continue being able to play in front of a crowd like that. It's a blessing," Avila said. "We hope to do this Thursday, too. … We're winners. We came here with one single goal and it's time to get the second win."

motor yacht star of the sea

Good morning, BBN!

Bo Jackson, a 4-star running back out of Cleveland, Ohio, just included the Kentucky Wildcats in his final list.

He’s a junior at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, and he has lived up to his name. There’s no relation to the great Bo Jackson from Auburn, but when you have a name like that, you have no choice but to play the RB position and be a star!

NEWS: Four-Star RB Bo Jackson is down to 1️⃣2️⃣ Schools, he tells me for @on3recruits The 6’0 210 RB from Cleveland, OH is ranked as a Top 70 Recruit in the ‘25 Class (No. 5 RB) per On3 Where Should He Go? https://t.co/RrVwpWdwkd pic.twitter.com/AYBpsFCK8G — Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) April 2, 2024

It’s only a top 12, and the competition is very stiff, but we’ve seen Mark Stoops and Co. pull off some big-time recruits like this over their tenure, so this wouldn’t be surprising.

Also, the Cats were his first D1 offer back in 2022, and that tends to carry a lot of weight with recruits.

Ohio State is the current frontrunner for Jackson, and he just took a visit there this past weekend.

It’d be pretty sweet to see “Bo Jackson, Kentucky Wildcat” — but I’m sure it’ll be a while until we hear any major update here as he hasn’t announced any “official” visits.

Red sea international welcomes overseas flights serving new resorts.

Celebrating the inaugural flight of flydubai to the Red Sea International Airport on April 18, 2024 ... [+] brings reality one step closer.

It’s no secret that yachting is big in Saudi Arabia. If things go as planned, yachting is about to get much bigger along the coast of the Red Sea. What does that have to do with airports? Projects like NEOM, Sheybara Island, and Sindalah display development plans expected to offer more than 3,500 marina berths upon completion of the region’s ambitious Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 plan.

Marina plans are lavish and extensive, nudging up close to amenities often sought by superyacht guests. While encouraging owners to bring their yachts to the Red Sea after the Mediterranean season winds down, the option to take to the air to make that jump is becoming a viable option.

On Thursday, April 18, the inaugural flydubai flight is scheduled to fly from Dubai’s DXB airport to deliver passengers to the brand new Red Sea International Airport , RSI, in Saudi Arabia according to a press release issued by Red Sea Global. This marks an important milestone welcoming the first international connection.

A host on flydubai stand ready to welcome guests on board the first international flight to Red Sea ... [+] International Airport, RSI, scheduled for April 18, 2024.

Flydubai will arrive on a twice a weekly schedule, Thursdays and Sundays, joining Saudia Airlines. Saudia has been serving RSI since September of 2023. The addition will increase the number of flights to eight per week from DXB. At the time of writing this article, fares for the April 18 flight, returning to Dubai on April 21, are available for $1590 AED, or $430.25 USD, each way. When fully complete, the facility is expected to serve one million guests per year according to Red Sea Global CEO John Pagano.

Quoting Michael White, Chief Commercial Officer of Red Sea International Airport, “The arrival of international travelers represents an exciting next phase in RSI’s development, following our first domestic flights touching down in September last year. We are committed to providing exceptional services to passengers and airlines alike and we look forward to further expanding our network to serve The Red Sea and travelers from around the world.”

Nearby, the NEOM Airport welcomed its first air passengers to the area in January of 2019. NEOM is a part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative.

Gates at Red Sea International Airport will welcome international flights via flydubai, joining ... [+] Saudia Airlines, bringing eight flights weekly to the region.

About The Airport

If you haven’t heard about Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 new developments planned along the Red Sea coast, know that the undertaking is massive. An array of ultra-luxurious resorts, dining, marinas, diving, shopping, golf courses, and recreation options are to be focused on regenerative tourism intending to diversify the oil economy of the region.

A rendering of the Red Sea International Airport, about 90 kilometers south of Al Wajh, as it will ... [+] look upon completion, embracing five mini terminals able to operate independently to reduce energy use.

Upon its scheduled completion in entirety, The Red Sea Project envelope currently embraces 50 resorts, 8,000 hotel rooms, 1,000 residential properties, 22 islands, and six sites further inland. And that does not include other regional projects, like NEOM, The Mukaab, Trojena, and Oxagon. Power for all this is generated from the already built and operational 760,000 panels in five off-grid solar farms, the world’s largest battery storage facility checkin in at 1.2 Gigawatt hours.

The Red Sea International Airport is small, but its design is intended to provide white-glove service to an ultra-high end luxury traveler. Designed to become the first carbon-neutral airport in the Middle East, the facility uses local materials, minimizes light pollution, and incorporates 100 percent renewable energy in accordance with minimum LEED Gold Certification building standards. The main terminal, set to fully open in 2025, is built with five small terminals able to operate independently as demand dictates, reducing energy use.

Red Sea International is designed for guests to feel relaxed and pampered, with baggage systems that ... [+] seamlessly deliver luggage to guest destinations while providing a see-through window from arrival to plane via expansive glass walls.

About the Region

Enormous projects that the airport currently serve include the Six Senses Southern Dunes at the Red Sea and the St. Regis Red Sea Resort. Additional resorts scheduled to open in 2024 name Nujuma, a Ritz Carlton Reserve that is one of only seven worldwide, the Shebara resort featuring stainless steel orb overwater villas, and the Desert Rock resort tucked between the mountain range and the western seacoast.

Notably large developments here include the Mukaab in Riyadh, a giant cube 400 meters x 400 meters x 400 meters. The structure will house a central tower surrounded by a huge screen display, delivering 100,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and 980,000 square meters of retail space.

The Line in NEOM will build a 170 kilometer structure intended to house nine million residents in compact, linear neighborhoods connected by underground transit. Trojena is an outdoor ski destination that is 50 kilometers from the Red Sea Coast, already scheduled to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

Sindalah is designed as a luxury island destination with an 86 berth marina and 75 offshore buoys, yacht club, 51 luxury retailers, three luxury hotels, and a bevy of services.

Red Sea Global and the Public Investment Fund

A closed joint-stock company owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the projects being undertaken by Red Sea Global look to a sustainable future that will diversify its economy while nurturing the environment.

There are some who question the scope of the project, critical of its claim to sustainability, and concerned whether much of the planned vision is truly viable. Others state confusion regarding the various areas of development. For that, a decent primer is provided by Middle East Travel and Tourism Editor, John Navarre.

Pros and cons aside, many photos and videos of actual construction of infrastructure and luxurious hospitality facilities regularly document progress. In the interim, Red Sea Global has put together a music album delivering a mix of Saudi, Arab, and African cultural pieces to further inspire visions of Red Sea landscapes for future guests of the region. Sweet dreams.

Lexus LY 680 pushes Lexus' lifestyle aspirations further out to sea

Toyota isn't new to the boat business, the Toyota Marine division putting aquatic products out to sea since 1997 under the Ponam brand. In 2019, Lexus hit the water with the LY 650 luxury yacht , "a new embodiment of Lexus' challenge to go beyond the automobile to deliver innovative and amazing experiences." Built by Wisconsin-based Marquis Yachts, the LY 650 bore similar lines to Marquis' 630 Sport Yacht or 65, the Lexus yacht's stylized lines and interior designed by Italian outfit Nuvolari Lenard. A refresh for that first effort results in the LY 680, which adds 55 inches to the length of the flybridge, making more room for the lounge sofa and barbecue, and 27.6 inches to the swimming platform in back. Overall length grows to 67.8 feet.

The other important specs are common to the two watercraft, including the beam of 18 feet 11 inches, three decks, the interior design with the three staterooms sleeping six, the ability to host 15 people in comfort, 226 gallons of fresh water stowed below, and a 1,060-gallon fuel tank.

Unlike the LY 650, which debuted in Boca Raton, Florida, and was built in Wisconsin, the LY 680 is for the Japanese market; it's said Lexus sold four examples of the LY 650 before ending production. LY 680 builds have been outsourced to Taiwanese yacht builders Horizon Group.

The LY 680 offers two engine options, twin Volvo Penta IPS 12.8-liter inline-six inboards that make either 789 hp or 986 hp apiece, eliminating the middle 887-hp option the LY 650 offered. With the Volvo Pentas rated at 50 gallons per hour, running both engines full-bore would still give the captain about 10 hours to reach the next port.

Toyota Marine is now accepting orders for the LY 680, but only in Japan , with other markets "considered in the future based on customer demand." It costs 770 million yen, or $5.1 million USD. First deliveries are scheduled for 2026.

In a statement, Ping said two of the licences - for the Glenn and Hutton fields - are from the UK's 33rd licencing round, while the third is the Pilot development, after the business completed the acquisition of an 81.25% stake from Orcadian Energy.

According to Ping, the new acreage brings significant additional resources to its UK Continental Shelf portfolio, now totalling in excess of 100 MMboe in the central North Sea while also evitalising the historic Hutton field in the Northern North Sea.

The company said it continues to support Anasuria Operating Company, which it calls one of the most efficient operators in the North Sea.

"Along with Ping’s Fyne interest and the progressing development of Avalon, these additional licences establish a considerable development portfolio for the business," it added.

Ping Petroleum managing director Zainal Abidin Jalil said: “We are very excited about these licences and we believe we can use our technical skills from across our expert teams based in Aberdeen and Kuala Lumpur to extract significant value at low cost and very low emissions."

He added that the company expects these projects to potentially come to first oil soon after the projected end of the Energy Profits Levy (EPL).
