ROTATIONAL CAPTAIN: Daniel Rawlins (British) Daniel grew up on the coast of South Africa and got involved in sailing with the Royal Natal Yacht Club at the young age of eight. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling. ROTATIONAL CAPTAIN: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian) Nico has been on board Hyperion since 2011, he has worked his way through the ranks and now rotates as captain with Daniel. Growing up sailing on the Great Lakes in Canada, Nico has spent many years racing and coaching at his local yacht clubs before discovering the world of yachting. Beyond Nicos’ enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree in Communications, specializing in Economics and International Trade. His various hobbies include classic cars, skiing and kite surfing. MATE: Billy Holland (New Zealander) TBA DECKHAND: Ewan Medinger (British) TBA ___________________________________________________________ ROTATIONAL CHIEF ENGINEER: Thomas Dawson (British) Thomas has a wealth of experience on large sailing yachts, he joins us from a long-standing position as chief Engineer on 55m Marie, he is familiar with the systems found on vessel with big sailing plans. He brings a calm and confident set of skills to Hyperion’s engineering systems. He is a very personable crew and takes pride in keeping the vessel operating like clockwork. Any questions about Hyperion’s complex systems don’t hesitate to ask him. He is fluent in both French and English and conversational Spanish. Thomas returns home to the UK when he is off rotation to his family and 2 daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys just about any water sport a good run and of course Sailing. ROTATIONAL CHIEF ENGINEER: Gavin McIntosh (South African) Gavin grew up in Durban, South Africa and started sailing in the Southern Ocean soon after finishing high school. His career on board superyachts started in the Caribbean after completing multiple trans-Atlantic deliveries of 35-foot catamaran sailing yachts to the northern hemisphere. Gavin has a wealth of experience in marine engineering, and currently holds an engineering license which enables him to maintain and safely operate vessels up to 3000KW. He joined Hyperion in March 2021 as a rotational Chief Engineer. When Gavin is off rotation, he returns to his adopted home city, Amsterdam, where he pursues outside activities including golf, road biking and hiking. He also enjoys a good run around the squash courts, alongside spending valuable time with his wife and young daughter. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling.<br /> <br /> <br /> ROTATIONAL CAPTAIN: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian)<br /> Nico has been on board Hyperion since 2011, he has worked his way through the ranks and now rotates as captain with Daniel. Growing up sailing on the Great Lakes in Canada, Nico has spent many years racing and coaching at his local yacht clubs before discovering the world of yachting. Beyond Nicos’ enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree in Communications, specializing in Economics and International Trade. He brings a calm and confident set of skills to Hyperion’s engineering systems. He is a very personable crew and takes pride in keeping the vessel operating like clockwork. Any questions about Hyperion’s complex systems don’t hesitate to ask him. He is fluent in both French and English and conversational Spanish. Thomas returns home to the UK when he is off rotation to his family and 2 daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys just about any water sport a good run and of course Sailing.<br /> <br /> <br /> ROTATIONAL CHIEF ENGINEER: Gavin McIntosh (South African)<br /> Gavin grew up in Durban, South Africa and started sailing in the Southern Ocean soon after finishing high school. His career on board superyachts started in the Caribbean after completing multiple trans-Atlantic deliveries of 35-foot catamaran sailing yachts to the northern hemisphere. Gavin has a wealth of experience in marine engineering, and currently holds an engineering license which enables him to maintain and safely operate vessels up to 3000KW. He joined Hyperion in March 2021 as a rotational Chief Engineer. When Gavin is off rotation, he returns to his adopted home city, Amsterdam, where he pursues outside activities including golf, road biking and hiking. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The lower level houses an in-built piano for sophisticated musical soirees, as well as a comfy lounge area and a desk. Panelled walls, antiques, and brimming bookshelves give the refined feel of a classic library.

Top-quality Service is core to the experience. Hyperion sails under a crew of eight – with a crew-to-guest ratio of 4:3 – meaning service is fit for royalty. Expect mouthwatering banquets, the coldest of cocktails, a spotless yacht, and smile-inducing gestures when you least expect them.  

Build Pedigree

Hyperion was built to the highest spec at the world-renowned Royal Huisman shipyard – an upstanding pillar of sailing yacht construction. Her aluminium hull hails from German Frers, while the talented Peter Beeldsnijder sculpted her timeless interiors.

She’s refit and raring to go. As well as a fresh paint job and new sails, Hyperion’s machinery and teak decks were replaced during an extensive refit in 2015. She re-entered the dry dock in 2020 for additional refurbishments, emerging in perfect condition. Her next buyer need only leave their mark.  

Ample Deck Space

Hyperion offers guests abundant deck space, championing the outdoor lifestyle at sea. Days might be spent lounging in the sunshine, dining on deck, or spotting wildlife among the waves. At her aft, two day beds and space for bean bag chairs.

Swim Platform

Doubling as a tender embarkation area, a hydraulic swim platform unfurls from Hyperion’s stern, encouraging guests to take the plunge. A stepladder offers easy access to and from the water. Breakfasts at sunrise. Romantic dinners by night. The swim platform is a nook to behold.

Sailing yacht HYPERION offers ample exterior living on luscious teak decking. The aft deck has a covered seating area, dual helm stations alfresco dining option and plenty of space to entertain, formally or casually. A removable Bimini cover is available for further comfort, no matter the weather or occasion. Crewed mega yacht HYPERION has a substantial beam of 9.5m (31.4ft). Her wrap around wide decks give easy access to the expansive, flush foredeck and ample relaxing areas.

The HYPERION sailing yacht’s milestones include her carbon fiber mast which stands at 59m (193.5ft) in length and exerts some 200 compressive tons at the base. She has 59 km of wiring and 13,000 square feet of sail area. Unique indoor amenities include a state of the art temperature controlled wine rack for some 200 bottles and over 500 billion bytes of computer technology. It was with great pride that the Royal Huisman Shipyard received the prestigious Showboats International Award for the best sailing yacht over 38m (125ft). The yacht and crew were also the winners of the super yacht millennium cup yacht race in New Zealand.

HYPERION boasts plenty of water toy options, thanks to the extended hydraulic swim platform, the active in the group will find making use of them effortless, while others may wish to simply soak up the sun.

2015 Hyperion's 2015 refit included upgrading the propulsion shaft and propeller, installing new gensets and a new main switchboard, upgrading her navigation and communication systems (including the PLC hardware and alarm & monitoring software), overhauling and painting her hull and superstructure, and installing new teak decking.

November 2018 Update __________________________________________________________ CAPTAIN: Daniel Rawlins (British) Daniel grew up on the coast of South Africa and got involved in sailing with the Royal Natal Yacht Club at the young age of eight. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF STEWARDESS: Leanne Roos (South African) Leanne grew up on the East Coast of South Africa. After studying she left to peruse a career of Interior Design in London. Working at sea was something she always longed to do and decided after a few years to fulfil her dream. She joined the yachting industry in 2012 and has since mostly worked aboard motor yachts. Leanne joins us from SY Adix and is very happy to have finally broken into the world of sailing. ___________________________________________________________ CHEF: Lily Jardine (New Zealand) Lily was born in Dubai, UAE and spent the beginning of her childhood there before moving to New Zealand to complete her schooling. She worked as an Air Stewardess for Emirates Airlines for four years before moving into yachting to pursue her passion for cooking. Lily is influenced by her upbringing and loves to cook middle eastern and Mediterranean dishes. Completing her culinary studies in Devon, UK she has gone on to further her studies by completing certificates in Nutrition and Raw vegan food. Lily loves reading, travelling, music and dogs ___________________________________________________________ SECOND STEWARDESS: Kim Stafford (Canadian) Kim has just recently started in yachting but has an extensive background in all areas of hospitality. From bartending and serving to managing large scale events, she will be able to cater to your needs flawlessly. Kim is a water enthusiast with a passion for Scuba Diving and also enjoys water sports such as kayaking, jet skiing, paddle boarding, wake boarding and swimming. She also has an interest in nutrition and naturopathic remedies and if you have an ailment you can seek her assistance for an alternative cure. Ask her for a drink or a cure if you’ve had too many! ___________________________________________________________ FIRST MATE: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian) Nico joined Hyperion in 2011 and has become an integral member of the leadership team on board. Expanding his knowledge and love of sailing, a common thread of interest running through his life. Nico spent his childhood summers sailing in the Great Lakes region of Canada, progressively escalating from a position on the race team of the Burlington Sailing Club to Head Coach. Beyond Nico’s extreme enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity, he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree specializing in Communications, Economics and International Trade. His various hobbies include travelling, skiing, and kitesurfing. ___________________________________________________________ BOSUN: Joey Marcus (British) Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa Joey recently joined the crew of Hyperion in September of 2017. As Joey was brought up on boats a maritime career was predetermined and Joey started his career on board a deep-sea fishing vessel based out of Cape Town. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association’s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. He looks forward to traveling to new places and expanding his sea experience and building a solid yachting career aboard Hyperion. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF ENGINEER: William Kirkman (Billy) (South African) An experienced engineer, Billy joined as a valuable asset to our crew at the start of winter 2017. Billy acquired an affinity for engineering whilst working on motorcycles and cars in his native South Africa from a young age. A love of racing dirt motorcycles led Billy to work as a mechanic for the Ford off-road racing team, Billy is a true petrol head at heart. Billy has completed his Y3 Engineering qualifications and developed a wealth of experience on board both sailing and motor yachts over the past 10 years. In his free time not spent in the furthest corners of the engine room Billy enjoys an outdoor adventurist life style, from hiking mountains to water sports and of course motorcycle riding when he can. ___________________________________________________________ SECOND ENGINEER: Oliver Powell (New Zealand) Oliver started his yachting career in 2014 after graduating University in New Zealand and realising marketing wasn't for him. Previously, he had worked on commercial ferries in Auckland city but learnt the engineering trade whilst sailing across the Pacific on board S/Y Koo. Over the past few years he has expanded his knowledge on other large sailing yachts both around America and the Mediterranean. Oliver is a keen skier and enjoys most adventure sports, most recently learning to paraglide in Spain ___________________________________________________________

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). As Joey was brought up on boats a maritime career was predetermined and Joey started his career on board a deep-sea fishing vessel based out of Cape Town. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. <br /> Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association’s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. Billy acquired an affinity for engineering whilst working on motorcycles and cars in his native South Africa from a young age. A love of racing dirt motorcycles led Billy to work as a mechanic for the Ford off-road racing team, Billy is a true petrol head at heart. <br /> Billy has completed his Y3 Engineering qualifications and developed a wealth of experience on board both sailing and motor yachts over the past 10 years.<br /> In his free time not spent in the furthest corners of the engine room Billy enjoys an outdoor adventurist life style, from hiking mountains to water sports and of course motorcycle riding when he can. <br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> SECOND ENGINEER: Oliver Powell (New Zealand)<br /> <br /> Oliver started his yachting career in 2014 after graduating University in New Zealand and realising marketing wasn't for him. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. <br /> Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association’s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. December 2017 Update __________________________________________________________ CAPTAIN: Daniel Rawlins (British) Daniel grew up on the coast of South Africa and got involved in sailing with the Royal Natal Yacht Club at the young age of eight. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF STEWARDESS: Zoë James (British) Zoë was born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya and developed an affiliation with and passion for the ocean during long summer holidays spent on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. Whilst completing a Master’s degree in Environment and Development at Kings College London Zoe spent many weekends sailing with friends on England’s south coast, which is when and where she decided to combine her passion for the ocean and her new found love of sailing by embarking on a career in the super yacht industry. Zoe now has 6 years’ experience as a Sole/Chief Stewardess on board sailing yachts and has developed a keen interest in and vast knowledge of coastal locations around the world from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to the US East Coast and the South Pacific. Please don’t hesitate to approach her for any kind of inquiry or service that you may like or need. ___________________________________________________________ CHEF: Pippa Crowley (British) Although originally from the South East of England Pippa grew up sailing with her family in Greece’s Ionian Sea. Her lifelong love for sailing led her to pursue a career on board sailing yachts and she has been cooking on board classic sailing yachts, including the 1911 gaff-cutter ‘Mariquita’ and the new J Class ‘Topaz’, for the past 6 years. Pippa brings with her a wealth of experience along with knowledge and skills from classes and courses in particular cuisines such as French and Japanese. Pippa’s cooking is inspired by the environment and atmosphere of a particular day: on warm summer days she’ll prepare refreshing summer dishes and on cooler fall and winter days she’ll prepare comforting, homely meals. She hand picks the best local and seasonal produce integrating traditional dishes to give you a fresh fusion of cuisines. Outside of the galley Pippa is an intrepid traveller and adventurer, having summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, and is an avid and talented kite surfer. ___________________________________________________________ SECOND STEWARDESS: Maria Oreamuno (Costa Rican) Maria was born and brought up in Costa Rica where she spent many a school holiday enjoying all that Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific Ocean coast has to offer. Maria left Costa Rica in 2010 to pursue her further education in the USA. After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia with a BFA in Textile Design she moved to Antigua, Guatemala to commence work with a US based fashion design company that collaborates with local artisans to market and sell their craft. Maria was inspired to pursue a career in the super yacht industry by the love of the ocean and the possibility of travel. She is very much looking forward to exploring new European and Caribbean countries with the crew of SY Hyperion and of discovering new cultures in particular with regards to design, textiles and crafts. ___________________________________________________________ FIRST MATE: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian) Nico joined Hyperion in 2011 and has become an integral member of the leadership team on board. Expanding his knowledge and love of sailing, a common thread of interest running through his life. Nico spent his childhood summers sailing in the Great Lakes region of Canada, progressively escalating from a position on the race team of the Burlington Sailing Club to Head Coach. Beyond Nico’s extreme enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity, he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree specializing in Communications, Economics and International Trade. His various hobbies include travelling, skiing, and kitesurfing. ___________________________________________________________ BOSUN: Joey Marcus (South African) Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa Joey recently joined the crew of Hyperion in September of 2017. As Joey was brought up on boats a maritime career was predetermined and Joey started his career on board a deep-sea fishing vessel based out of Cape Town. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association’s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. He looks forward to traveling to new places and expanding his sea experience and building a solid yachting career aboard Hyperion. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF ENGINEER: William Kirkman (Billy) (South African) An experienced engineer, Billy joined as a valuable asset to our crew at the start of winter 2017. Billy acquired an affinity for engineering whilst working on motorcycles and cars in his native South Africa from a young age. A love of racing dirt motorcycles led Billy to work as a mechanic for the Ford off-road racing team, Billy is a true petrol head at heart. Billy has completed his Y3 Engineering qualifications and developed a wealth of experience on board both sailing and motor yachts over the past 10 years. In his free time not spent in the furthest corners of the engine room Billy enjoys an outdoor adventurist life style, from hiking mountains to water sports and of course motorcycle riding when he can. ___________________________________________________________ SECOND ENGINEER: Julian Corliss (Australian) Julian grew up in Sydney, Australia where he studied and completed a 4-year electro-technological apprenticeship. Julian then moved to Western Australia where he worked for a private contractor on board naval submarines, specializing in military sonar electronics. Julian has made the natural progression into yacht engineering where he brings his electrical knowledge to the very advanced Hyperion engine room and is keen to expand his knowledge in electronics and mechanics on yachts. Julian is a very keen surfer, free diver and spear fisherman who loves to travel and experience new cultures and places. ___________________________________________________________

His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain&rsquo;s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example.<br /> In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling.<br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> CHIEF STEWARDESS: Zo&euml; James (British)<br /> <br /> Zo&euml; was born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya and developed an affiliation with and passion for the ocean during long summer holidays spent on Kenya&rsquo;s Indian Ocean coast. Whilst completing a Master&rsquo;s degree in Environment and Development at Kings College London Zoe spent many weekends sailing with friends on England&rsquo;s south coast, which is when and where she decided to combine her passion for the ocean and her new found love of sailing by embarking on a career in the super yacht industry. Zoe now has 6 years&rsquo; experience as a Sole/Chief Stewardess on board sailing yachts and has developed a keen interest in and vast knowledge of coastal locations around the world from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to the US East Coast and the South Pacific. Her lifelong love for sailing led her to pursue a career on board sailing yachts and she has been cooking on board classic sailing yachts, including the 1911 gaff-cutter &lsquo;Mariquita&rsquo; and the new J Class &lsquo;Topaz&rsquo;, for the past 6 years.<br /> Pippa brings with her a wealth of experience along with knowledge and skills from classes and courses in particular cuisines such as French and Japanese. Pippa&rsquo;s cooking is inspired by the environment and atmosphere of a particular day: on warm summer days she&rsquo;ll prepare refreshing summer dishes and on cooler fall and winter days she&rsquo;ll prepare comforting, homely meals. She hand picks the best local and seasonal produce integrating traditional dishes to give you a fresh fusion of cuisines. <br /> Outside of the galley Pippa is an intrepid traveller and adventurer, having summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, and is an avid and talented kite surfer.<br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> SECOND STEWARDESS: Maria Oreamuno (Costa Rican)<br /> <br /> Maria was born and brought up in Costa Rica where she spent many a school holiday enjoying all that Costa Rica&rsquo;s beautiful Pacific Ocean coast has to offer. Maria left Costa Rica in 2010 to pursue her further education in the USA. After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia with a BFA in Textile Design she moved to Antigua, Guatemala to commence work with a US based fashion design company that collaborates with local artisans to market and sell their craft. Maria was inspired to pursue a career in the super yacht industry by the love of the ocean and the possibility of travel. She is very much looking forward to exploring new European and Caribbean countries with the crew of SY Hyperion and of discovering new cultures in particular with regards to design, textiles and crafts.<br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> FIRST MATE: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian)<br /> <br /> Nico joined Hyperion in 2011 and has become an integral member of the leadership team on board. Expanding his knowledge and love of sailing, a common thread of interest running through his life.<br /> Nico spent his childhood summers sailing in the Great Lakes region of Canada, progressively escalating from a position on the race team of the Burlington Sailing Club to Head Coach. Beyond Nico&rsquo;s extreme enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity, he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree specializing in Communications, Economics and International Trade. His various hobbies include travelling, skiing, and kitesurfing. <br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> BOSUN: Joey Marcus (South African)<br /> <br /> Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa Joey recently joined the crew of Hyperion in September of 2017. As Joey was brought up on boats a maritime career was predetermined and Joey started his career on board a deep-sea fishing vessel based out of Cape Town. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. <br /> Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association&rsquo;s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. He looks forward to traveling to new places and expanding his sea experience and building a solid yachting career aboard Hyperion.<br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> CHIEF ENGINEER: William Kirkman (Billy) (South African)<br /> <br /> An experienced engineer, Billy joined as a valuable asset to our crew at the start of winter 2017. Billy acquired an affinity for engineering whilst working on motorcycles and cars in his native South Africa from a young age. A love of racing dirt motorcycles led Billy to work as a mechanic for the Ford off-road racing team, Billy is a true petrol head at heart. <br /> Billy has completed his Y3 Engineering qualifications and developed a wealth of experience on board both sailing and motor yachts over the past 10 years.<br /> In his free time not spent in the furthest corners of the engine room Billy enjoys an outdoor adventurist life style, from hiking mountains to water sports and of course motorcycle riding when he can. <br /> ___________________________________________________________<br /> <br /> SECOND ENGINEER: Julian Corliss (Australian)<br /> <br /> Julian grew up in Sydney, Australia where he studied and completed a 4-year electro-technological apprenticeship. Silicon Valley Entrepreneur Takes High Tech to the High Seas

When people on Wall Street think these days about the entrepreneur Jim Clark -- founder of Silicon Graphics in 1982 and co-founder of Netscape Communications in 1994 -- their thoughts most likely involve his third start-up, the Healtheon Corporation. That is because Healtheon, an on-line service for the health care industry, is planning a widely anticipated public offering in late September.

But Mr. Clark, chairman of Healtheon and a major investor in it, seems nearly as intent on a separate autumn launching, set for mid-November. That is when the 155-foot sailboat Hyperion, a highly computerized vessel that Mr. Clark began planning in 1995, is to start its maiden voyage from a port in Amsterdam, to the Caribbean island of St. Barthelemy.

''I've been working harder on this project than I have any time since the beginning of Netscape,'' Mr. Clark, a 54-year-old, 6-foot-4-inch lanky blond, said in a recent interview in a modest office here in a dissonant setting: above a Jenny Craig Weight Loss Center, enveloped in the fast-food aromas of a nearby Arby's roast beef restaurant.

Though work on the Hyperion has involved long hours lately and frequent trips to the Netherlands by chartered jet, Mr. Clark shows no signs of travel fatigue as he speaks excitedly about the yacht, which outside experts estimate is costing him $30 million to build. (He declined to discuss such matters.)

''It's an R.V. -- a luxurious R.V.,'' Mr. Clark said. ''A self-contained, extremely sophisticated vehicle made for a harsh environment. And it has the most complex nonindustrial automation system that's ever been built.''

If this last superlative sounds like a sales pitch, someday it just might be. More than the expensive hobby of a man with an estimated net worth of $600 million, the Hyperion has begat yet another Clark start-up -- Seascape Communications, a venture in which he and three former Silicon Graphics engineers have been developing the technological guts of the sailboat. Someday, Mr. Clark said, some of their work may find its way into marketable products.

Because no commercial system existed for the completely computerized operating and navigational system that Mr. Clark had envisioned for Hyperion, he decided to create his own. ''I had a particular idea in mind,'' Mr. Clark said. ''I wrote 20 percent of the Hyperion's software code. I built an underlying set of tools, and the engineers used that as a nucleus.''

The result is an aluminum-hulled vessel housing 20 powerful Silicon Graphics computers, 37 miles of network cables and 500 billion bytes of storage for an electronic log that will automatically record everything that happens with the ship, from changing the oil to hoisting sails totaling 13,000 square feet.

''Jim is shooting over the horizon and our objective is to meet him on the horizon,'' said Jan Bokxem, who as technical project manager is overseeing the installation of the ship's computer systems at the 114-year-old Royal Huisman Shipyard in the Netherlands. ''The industry isn't ready yet for some of what he's requesting. Everything on Hyperion needs to be controlled and interfaced to computers.''

The ship's data and control systems are automated on a central server computer, where all monitoring data is formatted and entered into a data base that becomes part of the ship's memory. The idea is for this data base to help teach the ship, its captain and crew to sail better, using past experience to determine optimal sail settings for specific wind conditions, for example. (Not that Mr. Clark is expecting Hyperion's captain, Alan Prior, who has been a crew member in the America's Cup and Whitbread races, to require much tutoring.)

Each of the touch-screen computer terminals throughout Hyperion will offer passengers amenities like activating towel heaters in bathrooms, selecting wine from the cellar, or choosing a CD from the 700-plus titles in a music library with selections from Beethoven to U2.

But most noteworthy may be Hyperion's bridge -- the control deck, which on most yachts is where the various gauges and monitoring instruments are arrayed. On many modern ships, these devices tend to be a hodgepodge of systems from various vendors, with readouts that are difficult to consolidate to provide a single look at overall operations.

By contrast, Hyperion's streamlined bridge has six 20-inch-diagonal computer screens displaying virtual instruments designed to look like conventional ones and using software that can automate all of these monitoring functions and integrate them into a single operational system. This approach makes it possible for the captain on the bridge, the owner from a remote location and the crew members from various positions on the ship to have access to the information and to give commands -- assuming they have personal-identification numbers that authorize them to do so.

''Even though Hyperion's system is sophisticated and complex, it's simple in terms of what the user sees,'' Mr. Clark said. ''Simplicity is the cornerstone of everything technical.''

Mr. Clark has been an avid sailor since one of his Silicon Graphics colleagues introduced him to the sport in 1986. In 1996, he helped raise money for the San Francisco-based St. Francis Yacht Club's backing of America One, a hopeful for the America's Cup challenge in 2000.

Sailing is an enthusiasm shared by other members of the Silicon Valley technocracy, including Tom Perkins and John Doerr, partners in the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Larry Ellison, chairman of the data base software giant Oracle. In June, Mr. Ellison's 78-foot maxi-racer, the Sayonara, won the ILC Maxi World Championship, beating Morning Glory, a yacht owned by Hasso Plattner, co-founder and chief executive of Oracle's rival SAP A.G.

Yet none of the Valley's other yachtsmen have been as personally involved in creating their sailing vessels as Mr. Clark.

His inspiration for Hyperion came in the summer of 1995, as Netscape's phenomenally successful initial public offering was making headlines, when Mr. Clark happened to see a ship called Juliet, built by the Royal Huisman Shipyard, whose exquisite craftsmanship caught his eye.

Mr. Clark hired the ship designer German Frers to do Hyperion, with another highly regarded designer, Pieter Beeldsnijder, to do the interior styling. ''The craftsmanship is impeccable,'' Mr. Clark said. Because of his schedule, Mr. Clark does not plan to be on board when Hyperion leaves Amsterdam on its maiden voyage, though he may join it when it stops in the Canary Islands en route to St. Barthelemy. Though the later itinerary is still to be arranged, eventually the ship is to reach San Francisco, where the Hyperion's 194-foot carbon-fiber mast -- the world's tallest, the Huisman shipbuilders say -- will clear the Golden Gate Bridge by a mere 30 feet.

Though Mr. Clark does not intend to be aboard Hyperion for its entire voyage, he will not need to be. Through a satellite link, the ship is designed to enable him to monitor operations. He would even have the ability -- although he says he never intends to usurp his crew by doing so -- to remotely take Hyperion's helm via computer terminal from his Seascape office in Menlo Park, or his part-time residence in Atherton, Calif., his permanent home in Palm Beach, Fla., or virtually anywhere else in the world.

Early in 2000, Mr. Clark plans to be aboard to sail the ship to Auckland, New Zealand, to watch the America's Cup race. And when might he plan to formally launch Seascape as his fourth company?

Between preparing for Healtheon's initial public offering and Hyperion's first voyage, Mr. Clark said he had scant free time to chart the start-up's future. He does plan to keep Seascape's engineers employed for at least a year after Hyperion sets sail, initially to debug the system and then to explore the potential for commercializing the software.

He said he doubted that Seascape would pursue the obvious niche for Hyperion's system, the yachting industry, because he sees the market as too narrow. More likely, he said, the software would be marketed to complex environments like petroleum processing plants, where many sophisticated operations must be monitored over a wide area.

About the only thing that is virtually certain for Mr. Clark, who calls himself a ''half-entrepreneur, half-venture capitalist,'' is that something more than a fancy sailboat lies over the horizon. ''I don't like spending this much time and energy on just a hobby,'' he said.

Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling. November 2018 Update __________________________________________________________ CAPTAIN: Daniel Rawlins (British) Daniel grew up on the coast of South Africa and got involved in sailing with the Royal Natal Yacht Club at the young age of eight. His career in Super Yachting started in 1998, when he quickly completed three transatlantic crossing and two busy charter seasons before taking a permanent captain’s position on S/Y Gitana, a 120 foot Perini Navi in 2000. After 4 years he went on to complete two successful circumnavigations as Captain between 2004 and 2008, spending a great deal of time in the Pacific. Daniel has a wealth of experience in a multitude of different cruising grounds; he joined Hyperion in 2010 and plans on a long future with us. He has a calm nature and easy-going personality, approachable and confident who follows the belief that the best way to lead is by example. In his social time he dabbles in Photography, surfing and does competitive Triathlons and road cycling. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF STEWARDESS: Leanne Roos (South African) Leanne grew up on the East Coast of South Africa. After studying she left to peruse a career of Interior Design in London. Working at sea was something she always longed to do and decided after a few years to fulfil her dream. She joined the yachting industry in 2012 and has since mostly worked aboard motor yachts. Leanne joins us from SY Adix and is very happy to have finally broken into the world of sailing. ___________________________________________________________ CHEF: Lily Jardine (New Zealand) Lily was born in Dubai, UAE and spent the beginning of her childhood there before moving to New Zealand to complete her schooling. She worked as an Air Stewardess for Emirates Airlines for four years before moving into yachting to pursue her passion for cooking. Lily is influenced by her upbringing and loves to cook middle eastern and Mediterranean dishes. Completing her culinary studies in Devon, UK she has gone on to further her studies by completing certificates in Nutrition and Raw vegan food. Lily loves reading, travelling, music and dogs ___________________________________________________________ SECOND STEWARDESS: Kim Stafford (Canadian) Kim has just recently started in yachting but has an extensive background in all areas of hospitality. From bartending and serving to managing large scale events, she will be able to cater to your needs flawlessly. Kim is a water enthusiast with a passion for Scuba Diving and also enjoys water sports such as kayaking, jet skiing, paddle boarding, wake boarding and swimming. She also has an interest in nutrition and naturopathic remedies and if you have an ailment you can seek her assistance for an alternative cure. Ask her for a drink or a cure if you’ve had too many! ___________________________________________________________ FIRST MATE: Nicholas Jacklein (Canadian) Nico joined Hyperion in 2011 and has become an integral member of the leadership team on board. Expanding his knowledge and love of sailing, a common thread of interest running through his life. Nico spent his childhood summers sailing in the Great Lakes region of Canada, progressively escalating from a position on the race team of the Burlington Sailing Club to Head Coach. Beyond Nico’s extreme enthusiasm for sailing in any capacity, he tends towards the academic, having completed a degree specializing in Communications, Economics and International Trade. His various hobbies include travelling, skiing, and kitesurfing. ___________________________________________________________ BOSUN: Joey Marcus (British) Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa Joey recently joined the crew of Hyperion in September of 2017. As Joey was brought up on boats a maritime career was predetermined and Joey started his career on board a deep-sea fishing vessel based out of Cape Town. The high seas and a desire to travel the world led Joey to Europe in search of a deckhand position on board a super yacht. Joey then travelled to the USA from Europe where he joined us here aboard Hyperion. Joey enjoys surfing and skateboarding and was First in the South African Gravity Association’s Downhill Skateboarding Championship in 2014. He looks forward to traveling to new places and expanding his sea experience and building a solid yachting career aboard Hyperion. ___________________________________________________________ CHIEF ENGINEER: William Kirkman (Billy) (South African) An experienced engineer, Billy joined as a valuable asset to our crew at the start of winter 2017. Billy acquired an affinity for engineering whilst working on motorcycles and cars in his native South Africa from a young age. A love of racing dirt motorcycles led Billy to work as a mechanic for the Ford off-road racing team, Billy is a true petrol head at heart. Billy has completed his Y3 Engineering qualifications and developed a wealth of experience on board both sailing and motor yachts over the past 10 years. In his free time not spent in the furthest corners of the engine room Billy enjoys an outdoor adventurist life style, from hiking mountains to water sports and of course motorcycle riding when he can. ___________________________________________________________ SECOND ENGINEER: Oliver Powell (New Zealand) Oliver started his yachting career in 2014 after graduating University in New Zealand and realising marketing wasn't for him. Previously, he had worked on commercial ferries in Auckland city but learnt the engineering trade whilst sailing across the Pacific on board S/Y Koo. Over the past few years he has expanded his knowledge on other large sailing yachts both around America and the Mediterranean. Oliver is a keen skier and enjoys most adventure sports, most recently learning to paraglide in Spain ___________________________________________________________

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled).
