With its wealth of islands, ports, harbours and bays, not to mention beautiful cities such as Zadar and Split, Croatia has burgeoned in popularity in recent years, as word has spread over its majestic natural scenery, mouth-watering food and affordable prices compared with its western European counterparts. The key yachting areas are concentrated around the Dalmatian Islands to the south and Kornati Islands to the north, but wherever you chose to embark on your boating adventure you’ll be richly rewarded. For those considering a luxury yacht charter in Croatia, we’ve done some research and picked out three of the best companies where you can rent a yacht.

Established in 2012, Ritzy Charters is a highly regarded agency for arranging private yacht rental charters across the world. The company offers nearly 150 crewed motor yacht, sailing yacht and catamaran rentals in Croatia, as well as a number of those very pinnacles of luxury yacht experiences – super yacht charters, including an incredible 295-foot vessel. During our search, rates started at €9,800 per week for a 57-foot catamaran that sleeps up to six guests. The booking process is simple with Ritzy – all you do is fill in a query form with some necessary details, including number of guests, travel dates, itinerary and special requests, then you ask for a quote and wait for the company to send back a list of available yachts for your dates and criteria.

Described by the influential Conde Naste Traveller magazine as “the Airbnb of boats and yachts”, Sailo is a global boat rental and yacht charter marketplace that connects boat owners, charter companies, and renters on a secure and easy-to-use platform. Visitors can browse and compare thousands of verified boats based on date, location, price, size, and user reviews, and you can even customise the search by creating your preferred trip directly in the booking flow. Unlike our first two recommendations, Sailo offer bareboat as well as crewed yacht rentals. When we searched for charters in Croatia, we found almost 300 vessels, with around half available bareboat rather than as a skippered yacht, and with prices starting at €88 per half-day for a 17-foot crewed motor yacht. A total of 27 were also catamarans, which tends to be the scarcest type of boat offered by charter companies.

2500€ Extra costs.

2500€ Extra costs. We asked boataround for a Gennaker and received the message that a Gennaker was 270€ and the caution 750€. The caution for the boat was set to 2500€. Two separate cautions were taken, one for 2500€ and one for 750€. We had an incident (we were not given way and had to maneuver to avoid collision) that led to the loss of the Gennaker, the boat was not damaged. The charter company took both deposits of 2500€ and 750€ = 3250€ instead of the 750€ that was communicated to us from boataround. Croatia Yachting customer service reported that this was customary and we should have know this, even this is not mentioned on the boat page! Boataround customer service repeatedly promised a solution, but after a month of communication, they show us an inquiry for a new gennaker that is 7300€ and want to close the case. This is absurd as the total loss of the boat, which is +300.000€ results in the loss of a 2500€ caution. We were in no way informed that the loss of a gennaker would result in a 3250€ cost, if so, we would never have taken that risk! We still hope they come up with a solution, If so, we will update this review. We advise against Croatia Yachting and suggest chartering a boat with a company that offers insurance for the caution. Renting sail boat with Croatia Yachting not a good idea

Be aware that if you can have a bad sailing experience! Our vacation was not up to expectations and at after two days half the crew left the ship!! -Diesel smell in the right back cabin -smelled like old fish/urine in the kitchen/left cabine -The batteri got worse day by day and we could not use the refrigarator at night or the electrical anchor at all. -the sails where very old and worne and the boat sailed very slowly -the manual lock to the stearing weel did not work which they tried to fix with no success -the regulator to the refrigarator did not work and we needed to adjust the fridge with manual tools which worked but not optimal Spending EUR4500 for a week with a ship in a poor condition is not satisfactory. After complaining to Croatia Yachting they accepted responsibility and offered a refund of EUR200 on the next charter (which will never happen).

Where history-steeped cities meet the glittering Adriatic coastline

Croatia is a Mediterranean gem boasting many hidden treasures along its seemingly endless coastline, as well as a profusion of spectacular cruising opportunities. With hundreds of unspoiled islands, beautiful marinas, historic cities, charming towns and inviting beaches, it's no surprise that Croatia is rapidly increasing in popularity as a favoured yacht charter destination.

An exciting and timeless destination, Croatia is welcoming more and more superyacht visitors to its daydreamy Dalmatian Coast each summer. Untouched islands are strewn across the glittering Adriatic waters and a multitude of anchorages beckon, making this glorious stretch of coastline simply unmissable. Out of a total of 1,185 islands, only 66 are inhabited and this means a yacht charter here will guarantee seclusion and privacy for that ‘get-away-from-it-all’ feel. The most fascinating stretch of this spectacular coastline lies between Split and Dubrovnik . The old town of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO world heritage site and a must see when in the area. Located at the southernmost tip of Croatia, it's ancient city walls and baroque buildings will no doubt draw discerning travellers away from their superyachts to meander along the white limestone streets. Increasing the coastal city's appeal is its recent star role as King's Landing in HBO's Game of Thrones saga, and there are many museums and art galleries to trace the ups and downs of this timeless city's fascinating past.

Among the glorious sun-kissed islands to explore are Hvar , Vis , Korčula , and Brač . Korcula, steeped in culture and history, is reputed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo and, brimming with verdant vineyards and olive groves, is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic Sea. Brač and Zlatni Rat are idyllic locations for water sports, with the former boasting great windsurfing conditions and the latter replete with excellent scuba diving sites. Meanwhile, Hvar is one of the most beautiful and fashionable islands within this archipelago, offering designer shopping, exquisite wineries and unparalleled nightlife.

The Truth About Going on a Yacht Week in Croatia

It’s rare I take vacations with friends these days, but the stars aligned and four (very busy and hard to plan) girls from across the US met up for Yacht Week Croatia, sailing from Dubrovnik to Split across the dazzling Adriatic Sea. In short, it was one of the best weeks of my life and a perfect ending to an amazing summer of adventure.

Here’s an Unfiltered Look at the Experience:

First, it’s important to understand I did not say I went on THE Yacht Week, which is the company most people are familiar with. Their branding is incredibly well known and reaches all corners of the globe (who wouldn’t want to bask under the sun with those hotties in the promo video ?). The truth is, there are many competitors to Yacht Week Croatia – sailing companies that offer week on a yacht for a set fee so if you’re considering Sail Week vs Yacht Week, make sure you consider all your options and read the reviews. We did our homework and chose to embark with the Sail Week Croatia for a number of reasons – and I’m pleased to report our expectations were far exceeded.

Why We Chose Sail Week  Croatia over the Yacht Week: Itinerary and Price

The Itinerary: A lot of the companies we researched (ahem: The Yacht Week Croatia) looked extraordinarily spring breaky, promising young 20-somethings the perfect girl to guy ratio and Europe’s hottest nightclubs. They offer Party Weeks, Ultra Week (to the huge music fest), and basically a week of binge drinking. That would’ve been great 10 years ago, but when you’re in your 30s, you usually want to remember the experience. Sail Week has that kind of trip too, but what caught our eye was Adventure Week . The route was completely different than the party cruise (so we wouldn’t run into them) and each port offered a different activity like hiking, biking, kayaking, and SUPing. Full disclosure, it was a bit more soft adventure than I would’ve liked, but it was still actively exploring instead of wasting the day sleeping off a hangover.

The Price: We spent a week on a yacht (included was 7 nights accommodation, breakfast and lunches) for less than $800. Yes, you read that right. Essentially the same program as The Yacht Week for a fraction of the price. With the Yacht Week Croatia, you can choose how big of a boat you want (there’s a joke there), but you’re still paying for the brand name. They also try to upsell you on their food and drink packages, which start at about $915. Ouch. On Sail Week Croatia, you simply buy your own snacks and alcohol at each marina. Always do your homework if you’re looking to save money on travel.

The Setup: Each boat held eight guests plus the skipper; so half our boat was my friends. The other two were couples on their honeymoon (great humans, but a little weird due to the lack of privacy…we’ll get to that later). There were three other boats in our bevy so about 35 people total. The number of boats varies each week by demand (they operate every week of summer).

• The thought “life is hard” will run through your head often. You will regularly wonder what you did to deserve this terrible life cruising Baller Bay with the beautiful people.
• There’s plenty of downtime (which I sometimes need forced up on me). Actually getting to catch up on reading for fun was a whole new world and a necessary reset.
• You will feel like you have this whole amazing corner of the world to yourself. There are hours of blue expanses where you won’t see another vessel or another human.
• The water is unlike any shade of blue you’ve ever seen (and you’ll take more pictures of it than you ever dreamed possible).
• The skipper made the trip. The glue that ties the group together, Zoran was a fantastic human (and it didn’t hurt that he looked like a cross between Paul Walker and Ryan Gosling).
• We went in early August and had perfect weather. Or at least perfect weather for tanning. There was not a cloud in the sky, and no wind either so not a whole lot of actual sailing happened, It was more motorboat week (bad joke).
• Our skipper was a world class BSer and liked to mess with us so it was hard to know what was true. Much to our surprise, a few of the stops did in fact have floating markets which would deliver breakfast to your boat, or even better, mojitos from the floating bar.
• Can we talk about how solid the WIFI was in the middle of nowhere? We were rarely without Snapchat or Instagram.

• This isn’t the mega yacht you’re picturing having seen Below Deck . There’s no maid or crew. Just one lone (albeit fantastic) skipper who does everything from steering to cleaning and cooking.
• Quarters are tight, but you will get over the fact that there is no possible way you can sleep in a space that small. As soon as you accept you’ll be on top of each other, you’ll learn to stay out of each other’s way. The good news is, aside from sleeping you’ll rarely spend time in your cabin.
• The bathrooms are another story. You will quickly get used to hearing everything. You’ll get extraordinarily close to your bunkmates joking about who’s turn it is to take the toilet paper bag out (no flushing of paper allowed). Let’s just say life on the boat doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
• Showers on the boat are interesting also. You have to ration the water between port stops and not every marina has facilities (you’ll appreciate the ones that do even more).
• You will come home with random bruises all over your body with no idea how you got them. It’s inevitable.
• At some of the ports, we had to dock via anchor away from land, which made coordinating dingy runs to use the potty interesting.
• Omg the bees. They were everywhere!

What Surprised Me:

I wasn’t sure I’d like this type of vacation because I get bored at the beach in about two seconds. After lying out for an hour I’m usually antsy and wondering what we’re going to do next. I typically only spend 2-3 fast-paced days in each country before moving on, which each day packed to the gills with active adventures. This was basically doing the same thing for a week straight – a deep dive into one country.

Thankfully, my worries were completely unfounded. We quickly eased into the routine of 1-3 hours of sailing in the morning, stopping at unique swimming coves, and exploring each new port at night, which broke the day up and kept us on the move. The cities were remarkably different from each other, bustling historic gems like Dubrovnik (do the Game of Thrones tour even if you’ve never seen the show) and Korcula (Marco Polo’s hometown) to happenin’ Split and Hvar and completely remote spots you’d never think to visit (some without a single bar).

Synopsis: What are you waiting for? Go!

I would recommend Sail Week Croatia to anyone in their 20s or 30s looking for a unique vacation (older folks, charter a private boat). It was ridiculously affordable (especially if you use miles for flights) and CNN just said Croatia rules the Rivieras. The country is poised to blow up in the next few years; get there while it’s still under the radar and a hidden gem. I personally can’t wait to get back. We were extremely happy that we did our homework and did not just go with the Yacht Week because it was the first company we saw: we crossed paths with their ships along the route and it looked like we were having an even better experience for a fraction of the cost (while getting our adventure on).

Other Things to Note:

• Sail Week lets you sign-up as a solo traveler without a single supplement. The Yacht Week has a Facebook page to help connect you to people looking to fill open yacht spots, but doesn’t technically let you sign-up solo.
• There are plenty of other providers that offer similar sailing experiences in Croatia so do your homework. You can even charter a yacht and captain it yourself if you’re confident in your skills.
• Spend a day or two before or after your cruise exploring inland Croatia — Plitvice Lakes and Krka are both incredible national parks with waterfalls for days.

• We have just completed a three week cruise of the Croatian waters aboard Annabel II and are so completely delighted I am compelled to report back for other prospective travelers. We began our cruise in Tavit, Montenegro with three couples/friends and voyaged NW stopping at islands along the Dalmatian Coast, finally making an interim stop in Izola, Slovenia where three other couples/friends replaced the first group. The second leg took us SE, basically retracing the first leg, but invariably stopping/anchoring at different bays and villages. It helps that these cruising waters are simply outstanding in every way: beautiful bays, quaint and historical harbors, 78 degree water, great swimming, hiking, killer sunsets, stand up paddle boarding, interesting and historical villages. Many beautiful and HUGE yachts ply these waters, but I never felt like we were merely tourists as so often is the case in other popular European destinations. We WILL return as there are over a thousand islands, all with their individual charms. The yacht was eminently satisfactory with jacuzzi, music system, TVs everywhere, a huge master stateroom etc., etc. Annabel II also possesses a tuned piano which did get used. But the greatest delight was our crew consisting of Captain Andrew, Engineer Nathan, Stewardess Hayley and Chef Dee Dee. By the way, Hayley and Nathan are married. All are Kiwis and proud of it. Compare them with Aussies at your risk. Under Andrew the crew operated seamlessly and anchoring/tying up was akin to performance art. As a boater in Southern California I appreciated and was amazed at the teamwork. And the gourmet meals!!! Breakfast was prepared to individual wishes. One morning I asked for crepes expecting to be told it wasn't planned for and not available. Instead Chef Dee Dee dug up a recipe from her vast repetoire, including Nutella spread and surprised me with a fabulous breakfast. Lunch was typically an ample buffet. And dinners were just fabulous, each different with elaborate place settings and napkins folded using origami rules.  Individual dietary needs were always respected, and the meals were healthy. Our first and unfortunately, last booking with this charter company. The catamaran Lagoon 450 Sport“I Love Anna” was not in a pristine state when picked up which was communicated to the base manager. The skipper we have arranged (our long-term partner) made minor damage during the trip and then the problems started. Sailor Expert refused to accept the Croatian skipper's insurance policy and took the entire 3000 € deposit from the client. Our request for proof of the damage and an invoice was completely ignored for nearly two months. Just after our lawyer and MMK assisted, we received an invoice but with fictive costs and not many details. Our lawyer asked for an explanation, again requesting proof of the damage and invoices for the broken parts, but the charter ignored our lawyers and their two official notices, as they had done before. From our trusted source we know that they did not pull the catamaran out of the sea to repair the damages which they said they did. Completely uncooperative and unprofessional. Pros: - the office location is very close to the pier - the pier is not in the marina Cons - the gear box of the anchor winch failed on the 2nd charter day during normal usage. The winch was not loaded extra, the anchor did not catch anything under the water. It just failed because the part was too old. The charter company requested us to beat for 4 hours to a marina whre a technician has been sent. We lost 1 day totally from our charter time. But this is not all, now comes the really ugly part. We have been charged for the spare part and for the labour. Conclusion: Charter this company only if you are willing to be charged for the replacement of their old hardware with new one. Seriously the worst charter company ever. How they are still getting away with this I have no idea. (I've written a full review of our experiences on Trustpilot). Their modus operandi appears to be to offer old, unserviced, poorly equipped boats - usually not even the boat that was booked, sometimes in a different location. They have no services, no base management, no support. They are rude and crooked through and through. Don't expect to get a refund after they've cheated your clients. We didn't. Very good company! Me and my clients was very satisfied of this booking. Before this charter Ali was very helpful, the communication was fast and easy, there was problems because of current politic situation, but thanks to Ali everything was good. My client was very satisfied of his trip, the boat was in very good condition, check-in and check-out was fast and easy. Ali also gave him some advises about fuel and my client didn't waste time on fuel station thanks to it. There was no problems with security deposit. A professional team consisted of wonderful people! We chartered Blue Odyssey (Beneteau Oceanis 46.1) three times in 2022. The yacht was always in a very good condition, thoroughly maintained and clean to the detail. It is taken care as if it were privately used, and this is very much appreciated by our guests. The Bluetiful team was gone the extra mile to accommodate a smooth and up to Salparo's standards check-in and welcoming process, even helping with transfers and provisioning. The technical support during the charter was immediate and very friendly, even though it was barely needed. Something else that stood out, is the location where Blue Odyssey is docked. A small, low-key and picturesque harbour, away from the crazy rhythms of Athens, Nea Paramos is well protected from strong winds and waves, and offers the relaxing vibes someone needs to start their sailing trip. Very much recommended, even if this can lead to lower availability for us! I am looking forward to continuing this seamless cooperation. Customer chartered a new Dufour 470 (2022) on Kos. Yacht was offered without a self-tacking jib (also asked 3x!) - at the jetty then the realization that the yacht has a self-tacking jib. Provider's reason – you had to swap the yacht. When asked for a small amount of compensation, the provider referred to the terms and conditions and that he could have withdrawn - the customer was already standing at the jetty! Yacht was already in a very bad condition! A second customer was also offered extras that didn't even exist! The worst charterer in the world! I am writing this on the basis of many years of professional sailing experience all over the world. I will limit myself to a brief summary, because a book could be written on the basis of these cruises The charter was carried out for our clients with our skipper. In total, we charter three yachts over a two-week period. The yachts were delivered dirty, in terrible condition, they lacked basic equipment. There was no fire extinguisher, refrigerators not working and basic indicators, toilets clogged and out of service. Any requests for repair were unsuccessful. Nobody did the handover of the yacht on board. The yachts were handed over in a different place than it was stipulated in the contract - Old city port, without electricity and water, yachts moored alongside to tourist boats (very dangerous transfer from boat to boat). Golden compas requires you to pay the deposit in cash or by bank transfer (not compatible with Visa and Mastercard). For a two-week charter, they asked to pay the transit log twice, even though the yacht was DIRTY each time! However, the worst thing is that the crew was in real danger twice as a result of negligence and the terrible condition of the yachts. (I will not describe in detail here, please contact us if you are interested) I have the impression that Golden Compas is counting on a serious failure so they can blame the charterer and take his deposit. The crews returned happily only thanks to the determination and skill of the skippers and crews. Very bad experiences few years ago. There was a damage on the yacht due to poor maintanace of yacht. Client had to find the service man by himselves, had to pay for the repair. The company than didn´t want to refund the paid amount saying that the client caused the damage. Client than get a report from the service men, that the damage was caused by rusted part. Anyway, on check-out, base manager again refused to the return of money paid for reparation, he agreed after a long time discussion , when the client decided to call police. We could not help the client, as nobody answered to our emails and calls (once we called from private phone, we get somebody on phone, however he told he is not responsible, than no more call was answered). Zagreb to Dubrovnik: Parties & Plitvice Lakes

The itinerary was great! Would have loved an extra night in Hvar. The night in Plitvice allowed us plenty of time to explore but any longer would have been too long as there wasn't much else around aside from the lakes. Would have loved a stop at Krka as we passed so close by but did not have the time to return in our own time. The hostel in Zagreb did not have aircon, so was very hot and hard to sleep as we went in the middle of summer but we were pleasantly surprised with double hotel rooms in hvar and plitvice considering it was a budget hostel tour. The included boat cruise in Hvar was amazing and did not feel budget or cheap at all.

Amazing tour, couldn’t rate it highly enough. I was a solo female traveller and had a fabulous time. I very much enjoyed seeing the beautiful Croatian coastline. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and seemed to have a real love for his country. My main criticism was that there were frequent incidents where things such as guides in the different areas were not included in the tour, so it felt like we were often paying for services that I would have thought would be part of the overall tour. I would have preferred to have paid more money up front than to have had the frequent requests for additional money.

Very scenic views for most of the trip, however the clouds and rain disturbed our views and interrupted the rides. Our tour guide David was an exceptional, experienced leader and showed great care about our safety. Dan, who drove behind us was helpful to provide tips about shifting our gears I would have preferred greater communication prior to the trip starting since I asked about details regarding the itinerary. It is important to wear cycling shorts, for appropriate padding on long rides and maintaining comfort. My bum is still recovering.

We were the only guests booked on tour days in Zagreb and Plitvice, so we basically had a private tour and service just for us! wow! The ship we used was branded new, spotless and very comfortable as was our spacious cabin. Excellent the food on board. ! Croatia is fabulous. Tour highly recommended
