Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

This proven, safe, and fast ocean-cruising Trimaran, beautifully maintained and continually up-graded has now reluctantly been placed on the market by her knowledgeable owners!
The Chris White 55 is a great daysailor and able to make extended ocean passages as a very quick, safe and easily handled vessel. She is equipped with a very comfortable and seamanlike interior with attractive natural timber finishes, solar panels and a wind generator for electrical self-sufficiency and good ventilation. The designer commented that "she is long in order to provide comfort sailing in the ocean, wide for stability in extreme conditions, but simple in construction, accommodation and systems. She's an excellent performer, and has a very comfortable motion in waves". The concept of the Juniper 2 is a new design incorporating several refinements and improvements from her predecessor. She is wider overall, has a longer and finer bow, and uses a balanced spade rudder instead an outboard hung rudder. Aesthetic details such as the crossbeams and their fairings and the sheer line were refined. The hull underwater shape has less wetted surface than the original and the fin and rudder sections were refined for less drag. The interior layout was refined to increase elbow room and now incorporates a dedicated shower stall. Incorporating a ketch rig that is an absolute joy to handle, tacking is a matter of just turning the wheel. The crossbeams are very high above the water and there are no cabin projections beyond the hull sides. These features eliminate pounding in rough seas, contribute to her comfort underway, and was designed and built for safety and survivability offshore. Her interior and exterior finish is excellent. All systems and equipment were installed and have been carefully maintained and upgraded with an eye for simplicity, reliability and serviceability.

Carisa was sailed for 12 years by her owner/builders in the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean. They sailed her 6 months out of the year from their home in Tallahassee, FL.
The second owner brought her north to Narraganset Bay, RI. He sailed her there for 6 years and took two trips north to Maine. He day-sailed and the two summer vacations to Maine.
We have owned Carisa for 9 years, having purchased her in Newport, RI and sailed her down the coast to Florida. We kept her in Fernandina Beach. FL for 3 years and sailed her to the Bahamas twice a year for 2 months and 3 months. After that we kept her in George Town, Great Exuma, Bahamas for 4 years; sailing her 4 -5 months a year. That brings us to the present.
The sail plan is wonderful! There is plenty of sail area and they really power up when the wind blows. The obvious difference is "no jibs"! Setting the loose-footed mainsails is accomplished with vangs set well outboard to provide good leverage for the full range of the boom.
Carisa easily sails 9-10 knots with wind speeds of 15-16 knots. With decent sail conditions she will easily make 200+ mile days. In a flotilla she will out sail every boat except performance catamarans and 65'+ racing mono-hulls.

Description.
Paraphrasing the Designer's Comments:
The Hammerhead 54 trimaran is exceptional. Stellar performance, shallow draft, excellent accommodations.
Accommodations
Hammerhead incorporates a very comfortable tri-cabin layout that provides a large galley and saloon with a fantastic view, a double cabin forward with it's own spacious head and shower. The private aft cabin with ensuite head and shower and ample storage space provides the space and privacy normally associated only with large catamarans.
For additional crew, the main salon has 2 seats that easily convert to single berths, or 1 single and one double; as many as 7 can be accommodated overnight.
Performance
Hammerhead's sailing performance is extraordinary. She can lope along at an easy 20 knots with mainsail and jib alone. The vessel has seen extended periods of STEADY 19 to 20 knots of boat speed with a single reefed main and full jib, beam reaching in approximately 20 knots of wind. Steering in these conditions was a one handed affair. At high speed the helm is easy and balanced with absolutely no feeling of loosing control. Hammerhead is capable of sailing at 24 to 25 knots without surfing and without a spinnaker.
Hammerhead's windward ability is excellent. With her centerboard down draft of 9' she has the ability to drive to windward like a freight train. In moderate conditions she will tack inside of 80 degrees making 8 to 10 knots through the water. As wind speed increases the fastest way to windward is to open up the tacking angle slightly to build more speed- which offsets the greater distance. Boat speeds of 11 to 12 knots hard on the wind can be achieved with proper sail trim.
In ocean conditions her motion through the water is very comfortable. The narrow forebody can slice through waves at high speed without pounding. Downwind she is steady as a rock with minimal roll and yaw.
Single and short handing is easy with this trimaran. All sail controls are led to the secure midship cockpit.
Shoal Draft
Twenty nine inches, less than 2 1/2 feet of water is all it takes to float Hammerhead! With a pivoting centerboard and a retracting rudder the shallow draft of the hull can be fully exploited. Vast areas of the Bahamas become "cruisable", secure hurricane holes are easier to find, over-crowded anchorages can be left behind for secluded coves inaccessible to most boats.
The pivoting centerboard is contained in a trunk located beneath the cabin sole and does not impede interior space. The board itself is positively buoyant so that it floats upward into the trunk if the pull down control is released. Up and down controls are led to a simple self tailing sheet winch in the cockpit. Except for the way Hammerhead tracks to windward you'll never know the board is there. In order to make sallow draft practical the rudder must also retract. Her rudder will retract automatically upon impact with the bottom or any submerged object thereby preventing rudder damage. In addition the rudder can be steered while retracted. This allows the rudder to be retracted to the draft of the hull and still be functional. Hammerhead can be sailed or motored in 2.5' of depth!
Mast Height
Masthead height under 65' so that Hammerhead will clear the numerous fixed bridges on the eastern U.S. and gulf coasts allowing unimpeded travel through most of the Intracoastal Waterway and other important harbors.
Owner's comment:
A proven performer - at first sight Avalanche appeals to sailors as a very sexy, very fast sailboat, with a very modern design. However, the sailor will be astonished to realize that she is also exceptionally seaworthy when cruising out in heavy weather! After many years of sailing her around the world, in some pretty intense weather, I have never doubted her solid sailing platform and her ability to withstand the harshest of conditions. Even while hitting speeds of thirty knots in the Southern Ocean, my crew and I never felt in harm's way. We always had confidence in the boat! Avalanche is a very safe world cruiser! Including a longest recorded daily run of 528 miles in a 24 hour period - Southern Ocean, New Zealand to French Polynesia Passage, August 15, 2017
Having completed a circumnavigation, the vessel is currently in California, where she is for sale - ready for her new owner, to take her on her next adventures.

1989 Chris White Juniper 2 Trimaran This proven, safe, and fast ocean-cruising Trimaran, beautifully maintained and continually up-graded has now reluctantly been placed on the market by her knowledgeable owners! The designer commented that she is long in order to provide comfort sailing in the ocean, wide for stability in extreme conditions, but simple in construction, accommodation and systems. Shes an excellent performer, and has a very comfortable motion in waves.

Category Sailboats
2003 Chris White Designs Atlantic Chris White Designs Catamarans are among the most sought after catamarans. They are rare, fast and striking in apperance. Chris White Design Catamarans feature innovative design, such as forward helm station and easy to handle sailing controls. This example will be noticed in any anchorage and will sail circles around most catamarans. The easy to operate, daggerboard design is perfect for very fast upwind performance when lowered and shallow draft for getting the best pick for anchorage. The owner is sad to report that while motoring south in the ICW west of Jupiter Island FL in late March, I hit a steel H pile and broke the front crossbeam free of the hulls, causing the mast to come down and resulting in installation of a complete new rig: mast, boom, front crossbeam, all standing rigging and masthead electrics (excepting the radar, to be bench tested prior to reinstallation). Windsong is presently undergoing repairs at the Hinckley Yacht yard in Stuart, FL Damage to the hull was slight- the mast fell across the lifelines to port and did no damage to the hulls beyond scraping off the fairing filler for about 3’ along the deck to hull edge. The port outboard stainless steel pushpit railing, lifelines and stanchions are being replaced. This vessel will be in better than before condition. New Update!!!!! Price has been reduced and Windsong will re-launch in Stuart FL in Mid-September- after extensive refit: · Complete New Rig! (mast, front crossbeam, boom, shrouds, all standing rigging) By Sparcraft USA & Mack Sails & Rigging. · New mast electrics! (VHF antenna, Cell antenna, lights- radar new 2013 & bench tested summer 2015).· New bottom Job! (2 (3 in high wear areas) coats Petit Trinidad SR, multiple coats Petit Vivid on saildrives, PropSpeed on props)· New Oil & fuel filters, lube fluids. · New waterproof grommets on watermaker supply & shower sump discharge thru bulkhead ahead of engine room· New trampoline! Atlantic 72
The ATLANTIC 72 is a fast and comfortable world cruiser. New Build Opportunity
With sailing performance similar to racing monohulls like a Volvo 70 in stronger winds, the Atlantic 72 Penmanship and her sister A72 Skylark let your family and friends sail long distance in luxury. On a recent Atlantic crossing the crew reports, “we sailed consistently for 16 to 22 kts for many hours at a time”. You can't do that in today's crop of production catamarans. Four foot draft with boards up allows exploration where many boats can't go. 100% epoxy/carbon fiber construction provides exceptional strength at very low weight. Ample power from twin 110 HP engines and substantial tankage yields excellent speed and great range under power. The interior layout is flexible and can be configured to suit any specific needs. Standard arrangement includes four cabins with double berths (king and queen size) and two cabins each with two single berths.
Sailing Performance For this I will defer to Alan Weeks skipper of the Atlantic 72 “SKYLARK”. Alan has been at the helm for nearly 4 years and has sailed her over 21,000 miles. "Skylark is a true world voyager that routinely covers 300 plus miles a day. Using the right sail plan she sails at the speed of the wind, remarkable for such a big boat. With 8 knots of wind going to weather we're doing 8 knots of boat speed. In passage making speeds of 12 to 16 knots is the norm. With enough wind, 14 to 20 kts of boatspeed is common. During one passage we kept the speed between 20 and 25 for about 5 hours straight. All of this is achieved easily and safely with 2 crew just as it is on the A57."
Capable, comfortable, safe and easy to sail- what more can you ask for? Do you want your own Atlantic 72? Contact Chris White for more information. More information at Chris White Designs Yacht World
