Dani Weber named President of Balearic Yacht Brokers Association

Posted July 22, 2021 in Company by Janine St.Denis

Northrop & Johnson Palma Agency Services & Office Manager Dani Weber was named President of the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA) following the organization’s July 2021 elections, during which a new President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary were named.

This association is part of the organizational team behind the annual Palma International Boat Show, which takes place in June each year.

Dani is ideally suited for her role as President of BYBA thanks to her extensive yachting industry experience. She began her career in yachting in 1989 in the administration department of Five Star Yacht Care. She also worked as a stewardess on a 42-meter motor yacht before deciding shore-based life was for her. Dani has also worked for Idimar, the Balearic cluster for marine technological innovation dedicated to promoting innovation in the marine industry through EU-funded projects, for Yacht Projects, a company specializing in TPA procedures for yachts as well as agency services and for PalmaFits — a sister company of PalmaWatch — which is dedicated to project management of yachts larger than 30 meters. Dani joined Northrop & Johnson in 2019 and has been an asset to the Palma team from day one. The dedication and resourcefulness she gained throughout her career lead to her sterling reputation with owners, crew and professionals of the yachting industry. Her industry knowledge, organizational skills and positive attitude ensure she is a great asset to the Northrop & Johnson team. Dani is based in the Palma office. She is fluent in Spanish, English and Italian and has a conversational knowledge of German and Portuguese.

The Palma International Boat Show is returning in 2023 in Mallorca

Palma International Boat Show 2023: More than 120 boats on display in Mallorca

The season-opening Palma International Boat Show is back from April 27 to 30 with a host of superyachts once more on display at Moll Vell Marina in Mallorca.

The island's premier nautical event is back following a successful rebrand that saw the Palma Boat Show and Palma Superyacht Show join forces to become a super event to kick off the Mediterranean season.

The show, organised by the Institute for Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands and the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association, continues to go from strength to strength, with 127 boats confirmed to be on show beneath the bright Mediterranean sun.

The glamorous four-day showcase features some of the finest 24-metre-plus superyachts currently on the international brokerage and charter market, which can be found at the dedicated Palma Superyacht Village.

Within this section of the wider event, formerly known as the Palma Superyacht Show, visitors can meet renowned brokers and inspect numerous luxury charter yachts, both motor and sail. There are also a wide array of shore-side exhibitors, showcasing everything from the latest developments in sail design to next-level marine electronics, while greater space will be devoted to the refit and repair industry than in previous editions.

Y.CO is bringing 55-metre sailing superyacht Elena of London , and Fraser will showcase 42.6-metre Flying Manta . The 41-metre Envy , the 39-metre sailing yacht G2 and the recently refitted 47.4-metre Gweilo are also set to be there.

Other yachts confirmed include the Custom Line Navetta 33, Majesty 100, Ferretti Yachts 670, Princess Y85, Pearl 95, and Riva Rivale 52, while Wally will bring the Wallytender48 and Pirelli will demonstrate a range of its techno ribs.

Building on the success of last year’s iteration, which attracted 32,000 people, more than 80 per cent of last year’s exhibitors are returning this year. In 2022 there were 276 companies at the show, 21 per cent more than the previous year, and 264 boats afloat.

“Interest from top players across the industry is at record levels, especially for the refit and repair zone,” a spokesperson says. “And the big news is the Innovation Corner, with 12 start-ups showcasing new technologies.”

And as the show grows, its influence is extending beyond Spain. Of the 90 exhibitors on land this time, 20 per cent are from abroad and are not headquartered in Spain.

“The Palma International Boat Show has shown itself to be a catalyst for the sector, as it has been and continues to be one of the most important gateways for international companies that want to establish themselves on the islands or establish relationships with local firms to open new channels of business,” the organisers say.

Tickets and day passes for industry members are available now via www.palmainternationalboatshow.com

Balearics News Update - MYBA Charter Show, Palma and Superyacht Investor Conference

by Bruce Maltwood | 8 Jun 2017

Ownership , Charter

Feedback from the MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona show was very positive, with everyone agreeing that it was refreshed and re-energised after 17 years in Genoa.

As expected, the main topic of conversation was the new Decree 21/2017, with most people agreeing that the small changes would make a big different to the Balearic yacht charter industry.

The new  Decree 21/2017 came into force in mid-May and is a clear signal that the Balearic government is getting more on board with the yacht industry.

The new legislation is more of an update and simplification and doesn’t make any foundational changes; rather, it should make obtaining a charter licence for the Balearics more straightforward.

It’s important to note that a cruising permit from the Spanish Maritime Authority is still needed to sail in Spain, but no changes have been made to that procedure.

The Decree has created a Balearic Register of Charterers and Yachts. This is a public registry in which all owners who have submitted Declarations of Responsibility will be recorded and registered. It is thought this will help to control illegal charter activity.

  • Non-EU or European Economic Area registered vessels are permitted to charter in the Balearics.
  • The compliance certificates – maritime and financial – held on board the yacht are the responsibility of the person who signed the application for the Balearic Government Licence (Declaration of Responsibility) for non-EU flagged and EEA vessels.
  • The Balearic Government Licence is now valid for two years, effective from 1st January 2018. Note that any applications filed up to that date are only valid for one year.
  • Yachts which intend to charter in the Balearics are still required to carry the same documents for the Government Licence, but foreign documents no longer need to be translated. Translations are still required for documents that relate to the Cruising Permit.
  • The other news is that the obligation to have passenger liability insurance has been removed. However, there is, of course, a need for the yacht owner to obtain appropriate cover.

Palma Superyacht Show

The Palma Superyacht Show followed straight on from the MYBA Charter Show with a focus on yacht sales rather than charter.

Now supported by the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA), the event has grown from a predominantly sub 24-metre vessel show into a superyacht show with yachts of up to 60 metres on display.

With the Balearics seeing the biggest growth percentage in charter yacht numbers, this show is a reflection of the surge of interest in cruising in this area.

All the main brokerage houses were represented and this provided an ideal opportunity to meet existing industry contacts and to build some new relationships.

A new ‘captain’s corner’ featured talks on subjects such as Spanish charter rules and withholding tax on charters was well received.

With 60 superyacht exhibitors, high visitor numbers and also some sunshine the event was buzzing and full of activity.

Bruce Maltwood and Tim Joyce attended the show with a busy schedule of meetings and discussions with a number of brokers, managers and agents and Palma looks to be a permanent addition to the Sarnia calendar.

Superyacht Investor Conference Report

As usual, there was plenty to talk about at this conference and the live electronic polls were a great new addition to the format. These generated lots of very thought- provoking questions.

As expected, there was no ground-breaking news release at the conference but more of a general discussion forum covering a range of topics including finance, the US market, cybercrime, yacht management, IP, MYBA sales contract and yacht charter.

Discussions away from the conference room focused on the current hot topics such as the new French crew social security decree which may come into force in July and also the new charter transport contract which does not look like it is going to be in place for the 2017 season.

Palma, Mallorca

By Editorial Team

Established in 2013, the annual Palma Superyacht Show is organised by the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association, with the sole aim of providing an effective business platform for the industry to promote yachting and its services.

Incorporating yachts available for both sale and charter, the Palma Superyacht Show takes place annually in the port of Palma, Mallorca , and has established itself as a large and important boat show on the Mediterranean  yachting calendar.

Organised in cooperation with the Balearic government, the Port Authority and the Town Hall, the five-day event is for motor and sailing yachts over 24 meters in length, and attracts brokers and other industry professionals from across the world.

The Palma Superyacht Show runs concurrently with the well-established Boat Show Palma and, with its unique personality, provides a relaxed and social atmosphere for yachting companies to use as a marketing and networking platform.

Timed to coincide with the start of the summer season, the event is also a good opportunity for brokers to meet the charter yachts cruising in the region, before feeding back to their clients. Consumers are also able to attend.

In the last few years, the show has grown considerably. As well as the exhibitor area increasing in size, there is a refit and repair area catering to industry professionals, and visitors numbers are on the rise.

For more details on any of the charter yachts in attendance, please speak to your preferred charter broker .

The event has establised itself as a large and important boat show on the Mediterranean yachting calendar
