Old Guy at the Show – Live Music Reviews
Summaries of musical performances in the denver area and beyond., yacht rock revue at the mission ballroom on 09/09/23 – concert review and photos.
Our friends told us they weren’t going to dress up for the show. But when they started walking towards the venue, they noticed the majority of the crowd were sporting yacht rock attire. Not to be left out, they bought captain hats from some guys in the parking lot. The Mission Ballroom was a sea (see what I did there) of people in cruise wear ready to rock … Rock to yacht rock.
Yacht Rock is a reference to the music that you would imagine affluent people listening to on their yacht. Typically, highly produced 1970s artists such as Steely Dan, Hall & Oates , and of course Christopher Cross who sings the 1979 classic Sailing. In 2007, an Atlanta band stopped playing original music and started playing yacht rock covers as a lark. The popularity of the group has grown ever since. Now, Yacht Rock Revue performs all over the country and even opened for yacht rock pioneer Kenny Loggins this year.
The nine piece band who were dressed like they stepped out of Studio 54 in 1977 are Nicholas Niespodziani vocals, guitar, keyboards, and percussion, Peter Olson on vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion, Greg Lee on bass and vocals, Mark Dannells on guitars and vocals, Mark Bencuya on keyboards and vocals, David B. Freeman on saxophones, keyboards, and percussion, Keisha Jackson on vocals and percussion, Kourtney Jackson on vocals and percussion, and Jason Nackers on drums. They started the night with the soft-rock classic by The Doobie Brothers ‘ It Keeps You Runnin’. All the sailor hat wearing audience started to rock and sing together to the sweet mellow sounds.
Robbie Dupree’s Steal Away , Steely Dan’s Do It Again , and James Taylor’s Smiling Face were recreated perfectly by the Yacht Rock Revue. The music transported the audience to the carefree sounds of the 70s. Since the lead vocal duties were shared by most of the band, they matched the perfect voice to replicate the sound of each tune. The audience wasn’t there to hear a new version of the songs. They were there for a sing-along with tunes everyone knows. And the band was there to fulfill that need with a wink and a smile.
The band slightly steered away from the yacht rock format with a few numbers. The R & B sounds of the Pointer Sisters’ He’s So Shy, to the new wave style of Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants to Rule the World to the classic rock of Boston More Than a Feeling .
I left the Mission Ballroom feeling like I just left a giant theme party with an enormously talented band backing up four-thousand singers.
See you at the next show. I’ll be the one in the captain uniform asking you if you are qualified to sail or if you bought your hat in the parking lot.

Brett Garske’s Bio – AKA Old Guy at the Show
There has been one constant in my life since I was fourteen. It’s been live music. My heart speeds up when the house lights go down, the band steps on stage, and glorious noise bonds a group of strangers. I witness the magic of live music and write about it. See you at the next show. I’ll be the old guy.

About Yacht Rock Revue
Yacht Rock Revue is an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007. The band was formed by members of the now defunct indie rock band Y-O-U after an ironic performance of soft rock hits at a local club gig took off into a weekly residence. Performing primarily covers, the band's set list is centered around a genre called "yacht rock", coined by the early 2000s web series of the same name, consisting primarily of soft rock from the 1970s and 1980s, but at times including songs as recent as the early 1990s. Although the Yacht Rock Revue started as a side project, it is now the main focus for all seven band members: Peter Olson, Nicholas Niespodziani, Mark Cobb, Greg Lee, Mark Bencuya, Mark Dannells, and David Freeman. The band has a contract with Live Nation and tours nationally, playing more than 100 shows a year and selling out theaters in Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, and Washington DC. In order to keep up with demand, a subsidiary band was launched in 2009 called Yacht Rock Schooner. In 2015, two of the founding band members, Peter Olson and Nicholas Niespodziani, opened Venkman's, a restaurant and music venue in Atlanta's Old 4th Ward neighborhood. In 2018, Jawbone Press released The Yacht Rock Book: The Oral History of the Soft, Smooth Sounds of the 70s and 80s by author Greg Prato, which explored the entire history of the genre. The book featured an interview with Niespodziani, as well as Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and John Oates, among others. In fall 2019, the band released their first original single, "Step". Further, they announced their first album of original material, Hot Dads in Tight Jeans. The album was released on February 21, 2020.

Review: The Seagull, Satirikon Theatre, Moscow (Stage Russia)
The Seagull is one of Chekhov’s most regularly staged plays, often revived in Britain and last year seen in a film version starring Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening. Back in the writer’s native Russia, this canonical classic has been pulled apart by director Yury Butusov and refashioned into a visually stunning, rock ‘n’ roll-style production that can be seen, with subtitles, in UK cinemas and online via Stage Russia. Much of the familiar text remains intact, with naturalistic moments that remind us of the play’s dramatic power, but these are rare in an adaptation that constantly undermines and questions Chekhov’s drama, using Brechtian-style techniques that make sure you never forget this is all artifice. Scenes that are traditionally quiet and intimate are transformed by the actors yelling their lines, while key episodes are re-played repeatedly with different actors and different directorial choices, often with comic effect. The set, designed by Alexander Shishkin, is made up of flimsy timber frames and prominent stage lighting, with illuminated dressing-room make-up tables visible on either side. As Butusov himself declaims during one of his disruptive appearances on stage mid-performance, “Here’s theatre for you!” While much of the text and all of the main characters remain, some plot details are lost or obscured, which is likely to baffle anyone unfamiliar with the play. The core story can still be detected running through the spectacle, following the fortunes of a middle-aged actress, Irina, and her family and dependents on their country estate at the end of the 19th century. As they confront the frustrations of their lives, they welcome young wannabe actor Nina who finds herself attracted to Irina’s lover, self-obsessed writer Trigorin. However, the identities of the characters and their relationships are sometimes hard to infer, not just because text has been cut but because, in another act of iconoclasm, the ages of the actors and their roles do not match: for instance, Irina is played by Polina Raykina who is clearly much younger than Timofey Tribuntsev playing her son Konstantin. They are regularly joined by a “dancing girl” who has no direct correlation in Chekhov and has no part in the plot. Realism is challenged throughout, from the avant-garde staging to performances that are often overblown, soundtracked by Faustas Latenas’s grandiose music. It is at odds with the darkness of Chekhov’s original but perfectly complements its themes around performance and theatricality. It may lack the emotive force of a more conventional production of The Seagull but, in its visual virtuosity and delightful playfulness, it is a mesmerising, unforgettable experience.
Butusov’s inventive approach to theatre can also be seen in his production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan for Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre which is playing three performances at London’s Barbican Centre on 8 and 9 February 2019.
Watch The Seagull at https://www.stagerussia.com/the-seagull or see it on the big screen at Pushkin House in London on 11 February 2019 followed by a Q&A with director Yury Butusov. General information.
On 28 March (17 according to the old style) 1776, Catherine II granted the prosecutor, Prince Pyotr Urusov, the "privilege" of "maintaining" theatre performances of all kinds, including masquerades, balls and other forms of entertainment, for a period of ten years. And it is from this date that Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre traces its history.
The Bolshoi building, which for many years now has been regarded as one of Moscow’s main sights, was opened on 20 October 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day.
On 29 October 2002 the Bolshoi was given a New Stage and it was here it presented its performances during the years the Main Stage was undergoing massive reconstruction and refurbishment.
The reconstruction project lasted from l July 2005 to 28 October 2011. As a result of this reconstruction, many lost features of the historic building were reinstated and, at the same time, it has joined the ranks of most technically equipped theatre buildings in the world.
The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia for all time. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it made to the history of the Russian performing arts. This history is on-going and today Bolshoi Theatre artists continue to contribute to it many bright pages.
