Great little pub situated by the river thames in greenwich with fab views. I was greeted with such a warm welcome on new years day which I really appreciated as I was alone and I managed to have a table next to window before the... next reserved guests arrived. I ordered the big fish and chips which was great value, plentiful and delicious 😋 I went to the bar and bought a large gin and tonic recommended by the server..which was parma violet and garnished with strawberries..tasted fab! I had a relaxing hour or so with engagement from the team which was lovely..I was made to feel really special and it really made my new year so a big thank you to Justina and Rod! Happy New Year's guys I'll see you soon 😊 More

Thanks you so much for your kind words. We enjoyed looking after you. I will pass your lovely comments on to Justyna, Rod and the rest of our hard working team who will appreciate them very much. We look forward to welcoming you back to... More

Nice pub, good food and lovely views. Our visit was a Sunday afternoon and the staff were really friendly. We ordered drinks and food (loaded nachos with pulled pork) and even though we had to send the food back initially as the pork was not... thoroughly heated, the staff could not have been more accommodating and apologetic. Toilets were clean and I was even able to watch a few overs of the test match (must to my wife’s dislike!) Reasonably priced, Greene King IPA on tap and a lovely environment. My only observation was that the ceiling could use a bit of TLC. Otherwise, great experience and would definitely revisit. I have attached a couple of images from our indoor riverside seat. Can’t beat London as a backdrop! More

Thank you so much for the review, we really appreciated your feedback and were so happy we could rectify our small mistake to your satisfaction. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of external contractors to fix the ceiling after a serious flood three weeks ago.... More

Me and a friend went on a bar crawl in greenwhich stumbled across the yatch , what a lovely pub/bar , nice vibes , great views. The staff are very friendly and chatty , decided to order food after a couple drinks , would 100%... recommend the chicken platter , best wings I’ve had and I’m not a wing man. Was served by a young lady Sara who was very friendly and accommodating , easy to talk to and seemed like a genuine lovey person 👍 More

Hiya Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such lovely comments, which I will pass on to Sara. We're so glad you enjoyed you food and will also let the kitchen team know how much you liked the wings. Now you know... More

I went here to celebrate my graduation. First problem; they didn't have my booking written down so they had no recollection of the booking and no time to plan for it as we were a party of 10 including a dog. I had the booking... confirmed via email so I know for sure that I booked it and it was the right time and day. The second problem, they told us already it was a wait for food but they only said half an hour. This was not true and it took almost two hours for our food to get to us. Some people ordered soup to start which turned up stone cold. The wait was so long that some of our guests almost left because they were starving. When the food finally showed up, they served it all apart from my friends fish and chips. She received this when everyone was done with their meal. My dad asked for pie and mash and instead got pie and chips and was told he would get a complimentary side of mash as they got his order wrong. This did not appear, in fact, he didn't even get a knife until halfway through his meal. Its such a shame as it has a lovely view but the fact they had not received my booking, wait time for food was too long, it was cold food and slow service really let it down. I'll have to think twice before returning again. More

Thank you for review Louise. I would like to apologise again, as I did in person yesterday, for the less than satisfactory experience you had. As you will see from previous reviews the vast majority of our guests enjoy their visits with us and we... More

Just dreadful! The food was awful. Cold! The roast beef was inedible, full of gristle and fat. The chicken was dry and overcooked although the dog ate it. The Yorkshire pudding was so burnt, black and rock hard. The two bar staff were run off... their feet so didn’t have the time to do anything about the food. No blame attributed to the bar staff after all there was only two serving but this meant that the service was terribly slow too. We complained to the floor manager he was disinterested too. I won’t be eating in the Yacht again and definitely recommend anyone thinking of eating there to spend their money elsewhere. More

My sincerest apologies for the less that satisfactory experience you had here at The Yacht. Unfortunately, we were incredibly under staffed due to two members of the kitchen and bar team members calling in sick on the day of your visit. We did try our... More

Called in with friends to “The Yacht” where in times past we had enjoyed good food and service. There was one barman who was also a waiter, an impossible task to fulfill. We waited an hour and a quarter for the underwhelming food to turn... up. A great disappointment both to us and our foreign guests. The barman himself was pleasant enough given the stressful circumstances but explained they didn’t expect so many people in the period between Christmas and New Year. If Greene King can’t organise things better (the Yacht occupies a prime position on the River Thames) it had better close down. More

Thanks for getting in touch. We are sorry to hear that you did not have a great experience here at The Yacht. You are right, we did have a few staffing issues between Xmas and New Year!! We do hope you do come back soon... More

A group of 17 for the festive menu. Booking accepted. Asked to complete detailed pre order. Asked for every diners email & name ( not given). Took aver an hour to pre-order. Gain was to be food ready. Greeted by manager. Polite & welcoming. Starters... arrived after a while. One later than rest. Then main courses came in batches. By the arrival of the last the first person was finished. Reason? Our kitchen is not big enough for a group this size. Why take the order. The pre-ordered steak was to be medium rare. It arrived well done. The festive pie was deemed inedible. The mush wellingtons were over baked, hard and old as were some roast potatoes. Brussels were mush. By this time we had been at the ‘pre oder so we can be ready for you’ pub 2 hours. Some of our group had to leave before deserts arrived & we agreed not to take the risk of another lengthy wait for coffees. We complained & were offered free Prosecco which we declined in favour of ££ reduction. The manager did not come to see us. There were not enough staff for the volume of customers. They were nevertheless polite & willing. It was sad to make them loose their service £ due to shockingly poor cooking in what seemed like inadequate kitchen facilities. How much our poor experience is a feature of Greene King or the Yacht I do not know. Greene King wanted our data (inappropriately) and we wanted a decent dinner. Never again for any of us. Our advice is limit bookings to small groups & get a new cook. More

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lengthy review, however I am quite surprised as I was under the impression the issues you had on the day of your party were dealt with before you left, after a lot of conversation and... More

Three of us came into The Yacht at around 7:00 pm for a drink and a meal. I live locally and have been here infrequently over the years. But it seemed like a good bet for visiting friends with good views and not too pricey... food. I had a chicken burger, out guest had roast chicken and my wife had sausage and mash. My burger was fine, the roast chicken was ok. But the sausage and mash, a simple enough meal, was inedible. I’m aware that budget restaurants don’t cook sausages the way we would at home. A deep fat fryer can save a long wait and can be fine. But I suspect these sausages were cooked like that at lunch time, then sat under a warning light for the rest of the day. Or perhaps worse, deep fried at lunch and the reheated the same way hours later. I can’t be sure. However, the resulting disgrace was three sausages with ends devoid of moisture, spongey yet unchewable and lacking of any flavour. These reminded me of the worst school dinners or the something from the illegal hotdog stands you used to find in London in years gone by. I’ve had bad meals before when you take a mouthful and are upset at the poor quality, but you at least swallow the disappointment. These sausages had to be spat out in disgust. The rest of the meal was poor quality. Old mash, cabbage that had been reduced to salty filth. My onion rings may have contained trace elements of onion, but nasty and greasy. I didn’t want to make a big fuss but I was determined to get a refund on my wife’s meal. At the bar I explained that I wanted a refund for the inedible meal. The person at the bar feigned surprise that the sausages were so bad. But refunded the money without argument. There was an apology. But no further attempt to placate me. Obviously I wasn’t interested in more food from that kitchen. But an offer of dessert or a drink by way of apology would have been appreciated although still refused. However there was nothing but the refund offered before drifting off and avoiding eye contact. I did manage to save two other patrons that were at the bar ordering sausage and mash from repeating my folly. Which made me feel a little better. If I can save others from repeating my mistake then my work here is done. More

Thank you David for your very thorough feedback. I am so very pleased you enjoyed your burger and roast chicken. I'm not quite sure how someone with such a discerning palate as yourself cooks sausages at home but grilling them from fresh, as we do... More

Invited in the pub at the time it was empty and then after we bought a couple of drinks each, then into are second drink we were told we had 15 mins to leave. The atmosphere had changed even though we were more than happy... to continue buying drinks. They didn't want to find any other table for us. Obviously are money wasn't any good anymore. If they had been honest and told us from the beginning we had an hour then i would be okay with that and fine else where plenty of pubs to choose from. More

Hi U5045xymichaelg, thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience. We are disappointed to hear that you are not satisfied with your visit. All of our bookings and walk ins are allocated a one and half hour time slot,... More

We decided to try the Yacht after a visit to its imposing neighbour 'The Trafalgar' and were left feeling a bit confused that pubs are supposed to be doing all they can to welcome people back as they rebuild their trade post Covid. However on... dropping in at 22.45 and ordering pints this seemed to be too much for the barmaid who had to check with the manager! Once this was granted we were duly served but under the feeling that we had to neck them (as we were told the pub would close very soon after 11). the experience wasn't one to linger in the mind fully apart from the "welcome" pubs and places in the hospitality trade are usually places you expect just that - hospitality - it may have been a long day and all that but the bloody places are supposed to be open to that time. FFS, what a joke of a pub and on a Friday night too. More

We are sorry that you had a less than satisfactory visit to The Yacht recently. As you can see from other reviews, we pride ourselves on being courteous and very friendly towards all of our customers. So that we can look into this properly ,could... More

I'm only an occasional visitor to The Yacht, but was passing tonight so popped in – out of curiosity – for a pint. Warmly welcomed by the barman, the Covid-safe procedure was explained and I was shown to a marvellous table overlooking the Thames as... the sun was setting – a beautiful sight. I wasn't planning to eat, but as the barman also told me about the Eat Out to Help Out offer it seemed rude not to. Food came fast and it was great – I only wish I had taken a friend with me to enjoy the experience. Service was impeccable, food delicious and a very safe environment. I'll be making my visits more frequent from now on. More

Pete S, thank you for your kind words and this wonderful review! We hope to see you again soon!

I really like the ambience of this pub and a seat at the open window looking right over the Thames is to die for. We usually have drinks here but this time we went for Sunday lunch. We were very disappointed - not sure if... there was a problem in the kitchen but this was not explained. We waited nearly an hour after we ordered to get our food. When it arrived, the cod and chips looked like it had been sitting under a hot lamp for a long while as it was overcooked bordering on burnt. The salad was bland with an indiscernible dressing. The roast beef looked congealed but my husband said it tasted better than it looked. My steak and ale pie, mash and greens was the exception as it was very good. We weren't asked if our food was ok and this is probably because they knew what the answer would have been! It's a shame because they're really friendly and it's a great pub but please do sort out the kitchen. More

Thank you for your feedback and I am so pleased you enjoyed your pie. We use the honest reviews of our customers such as yourself to improve our service when we need to and it seems on this occasion we let you down with the... More

The waitress was rude and patronizing. Did not know anything about my booking, was patronizing and very unpleasant. It was my job to be nice and to 'smile'! I left immediately and will never come back. I went to Trafalgar Tavern instead and had a... lovely time - great food, we were served by two waitresses during my stay - both very nice and professional. More

Hi 660milenak, I'd really appreciate the opportunity to speak to you about your experience, if you have a spare moment please could you get in touch 020 8858 0175

We visited on a Sunday and after ordering our food realised we needed to leave before we had time to eat due to public transport. The staff insisted we take it with us as we had paid and proceeded to pack it into takeaway boxes... ! I did manage to enjoy a delicious glass of red wine 🍷 . Lovely views. More

Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Our team work really hard to ensure all our guests have a great experience when they visit us ... even if they have to leave sooner than planned! Come back and see us again soon.

1. Was asked to pay a deposit for mother’s day lunch. That’s fine. 2. Booked far in advance and requested a windows seat. Was given a seat with barely any light at all. Not ideal. Was told they had all the seats booked by the... windows, but we definitely saw place we could have sat for the duration of our meal. 3. Was told only after trying to order that all the light lunch items and a number of the main items were not available. 4. Attitude of the lady behind the bar was dismissive. But a shining light was the serving staff who were lovely. I’d have thought if they knew it would be busy enough to require a deposit, they’d have been able to get half their stock in. This place might be good for locals who want a pint while they watch the game, but I won’t ever rely on them to accommodate an occasion again. More

Thank you for leaving your feedback. I have reached out to you directly using the email address you booked your table with.

More

More

Yacht and Boat Clubs of Greenwich

By Local History Librarian March 17, 2017

Originally written by Carl White.

A friend recently asked me which was the oldest yacht and boat club in Greenwich. I said I thought it was the Indian Harbor Yacht Club on Steamboat Road. After all, this was the site where ferry boats from New York City and Long Island moored. Local agricultural products (apples, potatoes, etc) were once shipped from this location. Once people from New York City began to vacation in “the country”, they began sailing on Long Island Sound.  So this was the most logical place for a yacht and boat club to pop up. My first thought was to grab Karen Jewell’s book “ A History of the Greenwich Waterfront ” (2011). She’d used the Local History vertical files and reference collection for her research.  I then checked the history section of the websites for the individual clubs. Finally, I reviewed several Oral History Project Redbooks and transcripts for more information.

The Riverside Yacht Club

Well, I was close!  It just so happens that the Riverside Yacht Club was formed on May 25, 1888. Mr. George I Tyson, a successful businessman, and yachtsman donated an acre of land along the Riverside shoreline. He wanted to organize a unique group of his friends for the purpose of sailing. Tyson even paid to have a new clubhouse built. Karen Jewell states that this was the second club to be founded in Connecticut and the eighth on Long Island Sound, despite the rise and fall of many startups.

The Victorian-style clubhouse was built in 1889. Part of it was built on pilings near a seawall. It contained a kitchen, ballroom, reading rooms, card rooms, bedrooms, locker rooms, and an expansive wrap-around porch. There was even a news article in The New York Herald about the new clubhouse! The club became so popular that it wasn’t long before the members were clamoring for more space. A new “spar loft” was added in 1893. Commodore Tyson once again funded the new addition. It included a billiard room, shuffleboard area, bowling area, staff housing, and horse sheds. The club was able to hold Midsummer Balls and Saturday Evening Hops. The 180-member club owned 10 steam-powered yachts and 52 sailboats. Eventually, the club began participating in regattas, and a Junior Sailing Program was initiated.

The club managed to flourish, despite several setbacks. On September 21, 1938, the “Great New England Hurricane” flooded the main and junior clubhouses. Amazingly, no boats were damaged. The clubhouse was back in service the next day due to a superhuman effort by staff and club members. The War Years (World War I & II) proved financially challenging for the Riverside Yacht Club. As the nation was redirecting material and financial resources toward the war, the club faced financial hardship, which it was able to overcome. As the war was winding down, another hurricane hit Greenwich from September 14 to 15, 1944. Although the clubhouse escaped damage, this time the vessels were damaged.

Indian Harbor Yacht Club

Surprisingly, the Indian Harbor Yacht Club was founded in New York City in July 1889, and incorporated in New York State on April 11, 1892.  Elbert A. Silleck and Richard Outwater were the only Greenwich members. The first clubhouse was set up on Finch’s (Tweed’s) Island. Members would travel from New York City to Greenwich. The clubhouse stayed there from 1892 to 1895. When E.C. Benedict bought the land in  1895, the club tried to get Benedict to agree to rent Finch’s Island as a “Club Station.” When Benedict didn’t respond, IHYC started a search for a new site.

Initially, a Rocky Point Neck site was selected, but the deal fell through. After other considerations, a permanent home was built in 1897 on Steamboat Road. It was renovated in 1898 to include a new grill room with an adjoining café, formal dining room, storage rooms, additional storage rooms, a larger piazza, and a 278-foot jetty.

On October 3, 1919, the clubhouse was completely destroyed by a fire. The damage was estimated to be100-thousand dollars. The building was only insured for 30 thousand dollars. Fortunately, the Club was able to raise enough money to build a new clubhouse, which opened on Memorial Day 1921. Today, it remains a (navigational) landmark adjacent to Greenwich Harbor.

The Belle Haven Yacht Club

Around the same time as the Indian Harbor Yacht Club was established, the Belle Haven Land Company established “The Greenwich Casino Association.” It was hoped that this would help attract people to buy property on the peninsula. The term casino may be misleading since it was initially used to refer to a place for social interaction (i.e. meetings, entertainment, dancing but not gambling.) A clubhouse was opened on July 4, 1892. Activities included boating, swimming, tennis, horse shows, live music, and theater. In 1926, the name of the organization was changed to The Beach Club. It was only open for part of the year. Club boating didn’t become popular until 1953 when a member introduced a new fiberglass sloop. This seemed to pique interest, and more people joined the club. By 1961, the name was changed to The Belle Haven Yacht Club.

The Byram Shore Boat Club

The Byram Shore Boat Club was founded in 1938. It was formed for people who enjoyed yachting, sailing, fishing, and boating, as well as education in seamanship and navigation. The clubhouse was built in 1935 and 67 marina berths were added in 1970. Club events included a Seafood Bakeoff, St Patrick’s Day Party, movie nights, Rock the Docks concert, and New England Clambakes. There were approximately 270 members.

Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club

The Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club (GBYC) was established on Grass Island in 1938. Several businessmen formed it so that residents could enjoy boating. They also worked closely with the Town to enhance the harbor area. The current boathouse was built in 1955, and the docks provided 65 slips.

An outside view of the Greenwich Yacht Club

Old Greenwich Yacht Club

At the eastern end of Town, the Old Greenwich Yacht Club (OGYC) was formed in 1943. It was formed to provide sailing education and social interaction. Walter Pendleton served as the first Commodore. A boathouse was built as the first clubhouse, and a deep-water dock extended out toward Sand Island. The Town purchased Tod’s Point in 1945 and planned to convert a “three-car garage” building into a clubhouse. It had double doors that opened to a work pit for trucks and automobiles. A coal-fired boiler provided hot water heat. Future additions included a porch and shed. In 1938, the Great Hurricane destroyed the dock. Small boats had to be pulled up on shore and tied to stakes. Large vessels anchored offshore. Club boats were pulled into the clubhouse for maintenance.

Going Down To The Sea In Ships

So the Riverside Yacht Club beat out the Indian Harbor Yacht Club by a year. I’m happy to say that each of the boating and yachting clubs appears to be healthy and vibrant today. I love to take the ferry out to Island Beach and see all the boats on Long Island Sound on the weekend. It reminds me of the important role boating and sailing (and Long Island Sound) have played in the history of Greenwich. Although commercial boating has waned, recreational boating flourishes. There’s something about a sail filled with wind, carrying a boat quietly across the water. It’s somehow magical.

May the residents of Greenwich continue to “go down to the sea in ships,” and keep the spirit of adventure alive.

First responder recounts rescue of East Greenwich couple after plane crash

by GABRIELLE CARACCIOLO, NBC 10 NEWS

Alysia and Paul Larson. (Larsons){p}{/p}

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — When a small plane crashed into Narragansett Bay Saturday, first responders rushed to rescue an East Greenwich couple from freezing waters.

Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Lieutenant Jeff Mercer said he's never run to his boat faster than he did after hearing a plane crashed in the water.

"A plane down in the water certainly gets you going extra speed," Mercer said. "We had limited information when the call came in just that a plane went down. We had no idea how big the plane was or how many people were on board so as we pulled up there, we didn't see anything and finally spotted some people in the water and got them out as fast as possible."

Husband and wife Paul and Alysia Larson were preparing to land when their single engine, yellow piper camanche lost power Saturday afternoon.

"It all happened so quickly," Alysia the pilot said. "I was able to call out a Mayday, on the radio, to Quonset tower, and prepare for impact. We both braced and the next thing you know we're in the water."

In the frigid water, she used her cell phone to call 911.

Then when the plane, sunk the couple started to swim.

"There was a moment where I was like, I'm not sure we're going to make it but then I was like nope, we're not going to die today, we're going to keep swimming," she said.

  • MORE NEWS: East Greenwich couple survives crash, reunites with family

Within 10 minutes of getting the call, Department of Environmental Management Officers were pulling them to safety.

"That's pretty unheard of for response on the water, and especially in the winter time when there's not other recreational boats out on the water to help," Mercer said. "On the way out, I suited up in my swimming gear in case I had to go in the water. We didn't have to they were treading water fine. We threw them the life ring in the back and were able to pull them alongside and get them in the boat."

He said he was impressed with how calm the couple remained in the face of such a dire emergency.

"They were extremely calm considering the situation that just happened," he said. "The first thing they got on board was analyzed how they could have done things better so I was impressed by their attitude."

Now the Coast Guard is working to recover the plane.

"We are constantly observing and making sure that there's no act of pollution, which currently there's been no reports of active pollution," US Coast Guard Commander Thomas Wieland said.

On Saturday, they were able to attach buoys to it before it sank to the bottom of the bay where it currently sits in two pieces.

"That allows us to mark the position of the aircraft and make sure that it's not impeding any traffic in the channel," he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.

Prime minister defends border security amid political stoush over boat arrivals, missing man found in WA

Western Australian Police officers have located a man who has been missing since Friday in the state's far north, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese fends off renewed criticism over the country's border security measures.

Police said the man was part of a group that arrived in   Australia via an "unknown vessel".

It was not known how or why the man became separated from the group, but he has been found to be in relatively good condition.

WA Police Armadale Superintendent Mark Longman said the man was found on a track not far from the Truscott Airbase.

"The man has been confirmed as being the same male who was missing from the vessel that landed on the Kimberley coast on Friday,” he said.

A man in a police uniform looks slightly to the left of frame wearing glasses as he speaks.

“He’s extremely lucky to have been located in these circumstances alive and well.

"Our part ends on having located him and getting him to medical attention and then it'll be up to other agencies as to where he goes to now."

The man, who Superintendent Longman said was "described as Chinese and aged in his 40s", was receiving medical treatment from a doctor at the Truscott Airbase on Sunday afternoon.

It's believed he had been separated from the group in the vicinity of the Mitchell Plateau.

Plane bound for Nauru

Earlier in the day a Nauru Airlines flight, believed to be carrying passengers from the group of boat arrivals, landed at RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland, before departing for Nauru.

It travelled to Queensland from RAAF Base Curtin in WA's Kimberley, according to an online flight tracking site.

A Nauru airlines plane is seen on a runway with grass in the foreground.

The recent development is the third known arrival on WA's coast in five months.

In November 2023, a group of 12 people landed in the same area after travelling from Indonesia via boat.

Earlier this year in February, 39 foreign nationals were discovered in three different locations near Beagle Bay in WA's north.

Prime minister defends border security

Speaking in Melbourne, Mr Albanese defended the government's approach to border security in the face of criticism from the opposition.

"We will deal with any unauthorised arrivals consistent with Operation Sovereign Borders, and that's what we've done," he said.

a caucasian man wearing a pink collared shirt talking

"There's been no change in policy since 2013. We'll use all avenues at our disposal to make sure that the borders are protected and make sure we respond in accordance with the principles of Operation Sovereign Borders, and that's what we have again done on this occasion."

The prime minister did not clarify whether he was concerned about the third boat arrival in the Kimberley since November.

"We have a very large coastline," he said.

"What is clear, though, is that people who are unauthorised arrivals will not be settled in Australia; Operation Sovereign Borders principles will apply, as they have been in this case."

WA Premier Roger Cook said he was confident in the government's approach.

WA Premier Roger Cook stands outside in front of a train with "made in WA" in the background.

"There have been some arrivals of late, [but] in each case the boat arrivals were detained, and they were processed in the usual way," Mr Cook said.

"So this is actually a sign that our border protection policies and regulation is actually working."

'Indictment' on the government

Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Birmingham described the latest arrivals in the Kimberley as a failure on the government's part.

"This is the third boat since November that appears to have made it to the Australian mainland, potentially not only making it to the Australian mainland but offloading passengers and then departing without any detection of that boat happening," he said on the ABC's Insiders program.

Birmingham stands looking serious against a neutral background.

"This is a big indictment on the Albanese government if that is the case, that boats are making it to the mainland and departing with increasing frequency without detection.

"It comes at a time where the evidence provided to Senate committees and procedures shows that we have a reduction in relation to maritime surveillance, a reduction in relation to aerial surveillance, concerns about the future budget projections for Operation Sovereign Borders and a government that's dismantled the temporary protection visas, a pillar of those arrangements.

"So the Albanese government needs to acknowledge if there are increasing failures here, those problems, their responsibility and to act to fix them."

Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson echoed Mr Birmingham's comments.

"Since this election, this government has done many things to undermine our successful policies to stop people smugglers," he said.

"We warned them before they abolished temporary protection visas that that would give people incentives to get on the boats again to try and come again, and lo and behold, that's exactly what's happening."

Mr Paterson said it appeared the arrivals were being moved to Nauru, where their claims would be assessed.

"It is unusual, if true, that it is Chinese nationals on this people smuggling venture … there haven't been any for a decade, so that is unusual," he said.

"I certainly understand why someone would not want to live under Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party, but it would depend on their individual circumstances.

"If they're found to be refugees then they'll be offered third-country resettlement options, as they should."
