Why Are Sailboats Mostly White? Explained For Beginners!

' src=

From dinghies and day-sailors to big ocean-crossing sailboats, you may have noticed that the hull, decks, and sails tend to be mostly white.

White sailboats are cheaper to produce for the manufacturer, plus a white hull makes it easier for the owner to spot any problems like rust marks or algae growth.

In this article, we will explain why:

Here’s Why Sailboats are White:

Most sailboats are white because boats can get hot on the inside, and white does a better job of keeping sailboats cooler than most other colors. It is common knowledge that white reflects most light, especially sunlight, while dark colors tend to absorb sunlight and heat.

What Percent of Sailboats are White?

While there is no information about what percentage of sailboats are white, we can safely assume the vast majority are.

If you have ever been window shopping at your local boat show, watched a regatta, or even taken a walk along the promenade of a marina, you will have noticed that all the boats are predominantly white.

Why has White Become the Preferred Color?

While we have mentioned that the main reason for sailboats to be white is because they are cooler, let’s take a more in-depth look as to why white has become the preferred color for sailboats:

1. White Helps to Keep The Inside of a Sailboat Cool

If you think about a boat out on the water, whether on a lake or the ocean, the image is often about having fun in the sun.

So a boat, especially a sailboat, is exposed to the elements, which includes sunlight, as there is no shade on the water. Add to that the reflection of the light from the water, and you can imagine how hot it can get inside a sailboat.

The white color of a sailboat helps to reflect the sunlight and doesn’t absorb as much heat as other colors:

Table courtesy of boatingvalley.com

This also explains why passenger vessels such as cruise ships are mostly white. As the color white reflects the sunlight, the interior of the vessel stays cooler.

This means that not much energy has to go into the air conditioning to keep the guests or passengers comfortable.

2. Reduces Manufacturing Costs

Today, the majority of modern sailboats are made from fiberglass.

This process involves lining a hull mold with epoxy (or the gelcoat) and then layering in the fiberglass sheets. This gelcoat becomes the outside surface of the sailboats’ hull.

The molds are used repeatedly, so it makes sense to manufacture several boats all in white.

If the manufacturer has to build boats in different colors, the process will take much longer as the molds will have to be specially cleaned after each use to ensure there is no residue from the previous color.

This becomes much more labor-intensive, which will increase costs.

In addition, sticking to one color makes buying the pigment (white) in bulk much cheaper than mixing different colors.

This cost-saving is therefore passed on to the customer.

3. White Hides Hull Imperfections

Within the manufacturing process, small imperfections on the hull are fairly common.

This could result from the hull mold not being cleaned properly or an imperfection in the mold itself. These minor imperfections will show with a dark-colored, glossy hull, whereas they don’t work on a white boat.

In addition, a darker-colored hull will fade due to the sunlight and saltwater. A white boat cannot fade. While both colors will need regular cleaning or waxing, a white boat will not often need repainting.

While a white hull hides imperfections, it will also act as a warning system for problems on your boat. Rust marks or algae growth that needs removing will all be more visible on a white hull.

4. Higher Visibility

White boats have higher visibility on the water than other, darker color boats.

While it is true that most safety equipment is in either red or orange, having a red or orange boat is the stuff of nightmares!

White symbolizes clean lines and luxury, plus a white sailboat is easier to spot in the water. This is especially useful in busy shipping lanes or if you get into trouble and rescue services need to come and find you.

5. Better Resale Value

A white sailboat has a timeless classiness compared to colored hulls that come and go in popularity.

If you ever find yourself in a position where you want or need to sell your boat, then it may be easier to resell a clean-looking, shiny white boat than, say, a dull, faded blue boat.

There might not be much difference between the two boats, but a well-maintained white boat looks more appealing than other colored hulls. A white boat can also be more tempting to a new owner, as they can better visualize any upgrades they may want to do.

This may include changing sail covers or other canvas work on the sailboat.

Is There Any Advantage To White Sails On Sailboats?

The most obvious advantage of having white sails on a sailboat is that they last longer when exposed to the sun.

Out at sea, the UV damage caused by the sun’s rays can be quite significant over prolonged periods of sailing. This is due to a combination of the sun itself and the reflection of UV rays from the water.

Dacron, the main fabric used for modern-day sails, is naturally white, reflecting damaging rays and heat effectively.

So cruising sails are usually white.

What Brands Make Sails In Other Colors Than White?

Most big sailmakers will make sails in colors other than white.

If your boat has a spinnaker, this will often be a very colorful sail. The following are the major sail brands to look out for:

  • Elvstrom Sails has created a range of six colorful sail plans for you to choose from.
  • Doyle Sails offer custom-made spinnaker sails in various colors for you to personalize your new sail.
  • Quantum Sails offers different colors of sails and the option to add custom graphics to your sails.
  • North Sails custom makes all their sails to their customer’s requirements, so different colors are not a problem!
  • One Sails is one of the world leaders in innovative sail design and can offer sails in different materials and different colors.

Are White Sails More Affordable?

The natural fabric used for sails is white, so if you want colored sails, the fabric must be dyed, which adds an extra expense.

So yes, white sails are more affordable.

Why are Most Sailing Boats White? (Complete Guide)

Categories Sailing

Sailboats have such elegant and glossy looks. The color & the polish is quite marvelous to look at but why are they always white.

The sailboat, the cruise ship, always uses white paint on the top side of the boat and red paint on the bottom, ever wondered why is that? Let’s demystify this and find out more about the color of the boat.

Why are most sailing boats white?

The color white has the ability to reflect almost 78% to 87% of the light. Coloring a sailboat white makes it able to reflect the majority of the light and prevents the deck and the metal body from frequently heating up. The white color coating also prevents the metal body from getting rusty.

“4” reason why most sailing boats are white

Preventing from overheating:.

The sunlight transmits a lot of heat energy, a boat sailing in the open sea will have to deal with this and spend a lot on keeping the boat at a lower temperature.

The white color reflects almost up to 78% to 88% of sunlight. So painting a boat white will make it reflect all the light as a result the boat will be at a comfortable low temperature without putting too much toll on the air conditioners.

Easy to spot rust:

In a White color boat it’s easier to spot any rust and other defects.

More convenient:

Nowadays, most ships are made with epoxy and fiberglass. Epoxy has a natural white appearance so it’s more convenient to varnish and maintain the white paint.

Giving a luxurious appearance:

Oil stains on white paint is a sore eye. Molds, dirt, oil stains, rust, etc will be easily visible when the boat is painted in white so workers will have to keep it clean all the time.

So if you are enjoying your journey on a shiny white boat then you can appreciate the workforce and their efforts.

What colors are boats?

It’s the most popular color for any luxurious cruise or sailboat. Reflect most light and heat. It can be an effective measure of energy-saving as the boat won’t have to solely rely on air conditioning equipment.

Mostly used on cargo ships. Has the most heat absorption capacity not suitable for personal or luxury boats sailing in tropical climates.

After white, the color red has the most light reflecting capacity. Hence make it a suitable choice for keeping the heat down on the boat.

This color can easily reflect more than 60% light and making it a convenient choice for boat paint.

A beautiful color, it will be really a pleasant site to sail on a blue boat in the vast blue ocean.

Most life jackets, life tubes, lifeboats are painted in Orange. It’s easy to spot and mostly used in rescue boats.

The human eye can easily detect the green color. Although the green absorbs a lot of light making the boat a little bit hotter.

Most warships are painted grey. This color makes it hard to detect and works great on the battlefield.

What is the most popular boat color?

White is the most popular boat color. Due to the ability to reflect the most light & heat, white is the most suitable for heat control. A white boat will be able to take the burden off from the air conditioning equipment and provide satisfactory results.

Nowadays, most ships & boats are made with epoxy and fiberglass so maintaining a white varnish is pretty easy when you are already dealing with white epoxy.

What’s the best paint for a boat?

A new boat will have an elegant gel coat on it. It will have a shiny glossy look but when you are thinking about repainting your boat getting that elegant fresh-out factory look is pretty hard to achieve.

Gel coats are going be expensive as well as difficult to apply without proper equipment and skill.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative you can apply Polyurethane. There are 2 types of Polyurethane paint available on the market, they are known as a single part and double part Polyurethane paints.

Single part Polyurethane is inexpensive and pretty easy to apply on boats but you will have to compromise on the longevity of the paint.  The double part Polyurethane paint will cost you a little bit more but will give long-time service as well as an elegant and glossy finish.

How much does it cost to have a boat painted?

The cost of the painting will depend on what kind of paint you are using and which part of the boat needs to be painted and the boat length.

For the top side of the boat, you can use single or double-part Polyurethane paints. For the bottom painting, you will have to choose a paint with a high-density copper oxide mixture.

So painting the topside of the boat will cost you from $90 to $450 per foot . If you do it yourself then you would have to buy or rent the painting equipment so add that to your budget. Painting the bottom line of the boat it’s gonna cost you $20 to $90 per foot .

Keep in mind that after you remove the old paint, you might have to do some rust removal and other bodywork on your boat so it’s gonna increase your expenditures.

Are black boats hotter?

Black color absorbs almost 99.9% of light. So a black color boat will absorb almost all of the sunlight. The sunlight transmits a lot of heat so sailing a black color boat in a tropical climate is going be pretty troublesome.

Most cargo ships are painted black and these boats are equipped with a pretty well heat isolation system. Painting a cruise ship or sailboat in black will be impractical or it will be costly due to additional heat isolation installation.

Are black boats hard to keep clean?

Most of the cargo boats are painted black. In a black boat the oil stains, mold, and other dirt are hardly visible. A black boat may look clean but in an in-depth inspection, one might find a lot of dirt and stain.

It’s as hard as cleaning the white boat but a black boat may have an advantage when it comes to hiding the smudges and dirt.

Why do boats need bottom paint?

If you are sailing with a wooden boat then there is a high chance you will have to deal with wood-eating worms and other threats.

Even if you are not sailing with a wooden boat, let’s say you have a boat with a metal body, the barnacles, sponge, seaweeds, and other sea life will get stuck on the bottom of your boat and slow your boat down.

So the solution to your problem would be to apply a protective layer to your boat so that it can preserve its condition and get utmost performance.

The copper oxide solution can fight off the wood-eating worms and other threats. The barnacles, seaweeds and other sea life also stay away from the boat when there is copper oxide present in the bottom paint.

The bottom paint also gives you an approximate measurement of how much of your boat is underwater.

Why are boats painted red below the waterline?

The red paint below the waterline in a boat is not any regular red paint. The red appearance of that paint is due to the presence of a high-density copper oxide mixture. The copper oxide helps to keep away the barnacles and wood-eating worms from the boat.

The wooden sailboat had to deal with lots of wood-eating worms while sailing in the water so the copper oxide coating remedy was introduced, the copper oxide also helps the boat from any leeches, weeds, and other sea life from getting attached to the bottom and creating drag or slowing down the boat speed.

Why are ships constantly painted?

Luxurious cruise ship, sailboat, or a cargo ship, no matter what type of boat you are thinking about, the constant paint job is always visible.

The paint helps the ship from fighting against oxidation and other deformation. Without a proper layer of paint, the boat has a high chance of developing rust and other damage.

Ships sailing in seawater will have to deal with constant exposure to highly reactive minerals, a paint job will help preserve the ship’s external bodies.

There is a high chance that the ship will be affected by leeches, sponges, seaweeds, and other threats. A paint mixed with copper oxide will help prevent any substantial amount of damage.

At this point, I hope you got an overview of the color of the boat and other related inquiries. Painting isn’t just for making the boat visually appealing it has various important roles to play. A good pain will help your boat fight against rust and molds.

A decent paint job will also keep away the barnacles, seaweeds, and other freeloaders from creating any extra drag to slow down the boat. Happy sailing.

Why Are Sailboat Sails White?

If you’ve ever looked across the horizon on a sunny day to see a fleet of sailboats out on the water, you’ve probably noticed that most, if not all of the sails are white.

These huge white triangles that float across the skyline often conjure images of peace and freedom, and seeing these white sails out at sea is probably a great sign that the weather is calm.

But have you ever stopped to wonder why sailboat sails are white? Is there a reason we don’t see multicoloured main sails or genoas?

Why Do Sailboats Have White Sails?

why are sailboat sails white?

When we see the white sails on a sailboat we are usually looking at the main wardrobes of sails – mainsail, genoas, staysail, etc. We’ll take a little look at sails that are often different colours further on.

There are a few key reasons why most sailboats have white sails, let’s dive into them below.

Sail Material

The main reason you’ll find the majority of sailboat sails are white is down to the sailcloth material colour. Dacron is one of the most popular sail fabrics around. It is a fibre that is spun into yarns that are then used to weave sailcloth fabric and they are naturally white or slightly translucent in colour.

It is possible to dye Dacron, but it requires a special dye that is bad for the environment, costs more, and uses high temperatures to work. There is also a belief that dying the fibres weakens them, though there are differing opinions on this.

If you want new sails to last then white is the safest colour option.

White Sails Cost Less

white sails against a blue sky

The cost of the actual sail cloth per sail is usually only about 15-20% of the cost of the whole sail itself, so you would have thought that choosing a more expensive coloured sail wouldn’t add too much of a margin. But it does, in fact, usually cost quite a lot less to buy a white sail.

To colour a sail you will need to dye it and to do that you will need a dyeing machine and the appropriate colours. For this reason, most sail manufacturers will only stock a few of the most popular colours and weights of sailcloth.

It would cost a huge amount of money and time for these specialist companies to dye sails a specific colour just for your boat, so they are likely to charge a large premium for anything specialist. White sails are the most popular, and therefore usually much cheaper.

Night Vision

a sailboat sailing past a mountain with its white sails hoisted

A great reason for having white sails as a cruiser is that they reflect the light well. When you’re on a night passage, being able to see the sails, even if you can’t see them that clearly, is a huge advantage.

After several very dark night passages, we were thankful for our white sails, that we could still see from the light of the stars alone. We were able to trim the sails effectively even in the dark, and we didn’t have to ruin our night vision by turning on our torches.

It also meant Adam could sleep while sailing safe in the knowledge that I could see what I was doing without his help!

This alone might not be a good reason to stick to white sails, but as a cruiser putting in many miles under darkness, it is certainly a benefit.

Does Sail Colour Matter?

white sailboat

There are various reasons why the colour of your sails might matter, but there is little evidence to suggest the colour of your sails actually affects performance, so if you’re wondering how long it will take to cross the Atlantic sails of a different colour, don’t panic!

A few reasons why you might want to choose the colour of your sails are because of visibility, identification, and style.

White sails might be harder for passing ships to spot in storm conditions or fog. This is why storm sails are often a bright colour like orange or yellow so that they stand out in bad visibility. On the flip side, white sails are usually easy to see at night, so that you can adjust trim without using a bright torch that will ruin your night vision.

You might use the colour of your sails for identification purposes, or simply like how a certain sail colour looks.

Which Sails Aren’t White?

a girl sat on a sailboat with the sails behind her

There are some sails that aren’t traditionally white in colour.

Light wind sails such as spinnakers are usually fun and brightly coloured, often in various shades and sometimes with a logo or picture depicted on them. Light wind sails are made from a different material to standard sails, a material that is easier and cheaper to dye.

Storm sails are another example of sails that aren’t often white. Again, they are made from different materials and for different purposes.

When you’re flying a storm sail the chances are you’re in bad weather, so it is even more important than usual that you’re very visible to any passing ships. Having a bright-coloured sail in dark weather will help you to stand out on the horizon.

Conclusion: Why Are Sailboat Sails White?

the two main sails of a sailboat

As you can see, there are a few key reasons why the majority of sailboat sails are white. If you’re wondering what coloured sails to buy for your sailboat the best thing to do is to talk to a specialist sailmaker, who will be able to advise you on the best colour to go for, tailored to your individual needs.

You might also want to find out how the colour will affect the price of new sails.

Exmouth Contemporary Performance Shag Off White Rug

Rated 5 out of 5 stars.

We wanted a comfy shag rug for our newly renovated living room. This rug is a STEAL for the price...at least the price it was when we bought it. Trying to find anything this large for under $750 was almost impossible. It's incredibly soft, and I'm really glad we bought it. A few things other people noted that didn't bother us (even though we're kinda picky): 1. The smell. Yes, there's a mild "new rug" smell when you unroll it, but it fades almost immediately. 2. The color. Yes, it's more of an off-white, but in my opinion, you can tell this from the product photo. 3. The thickness. When you get it, the pile is smashed down, so you do have to fluff it up. Once that's done (by hand or with a vacuum), it doesn't look thin at all. It DOES need a rug pad underneath, but so does any area rug if you want it to feel soft when you walk on it. 4. The fiber/material. No, this is not a wool rug. It's polypropylene, as the product page states. That's why it smells a bit like plastic upon opening. If this was a wool rug, it wouldn't be as affordable is it is. If you're dead set on a wool rug, you're going to have to be willing to pay a LOT more. But if you want a nice looking, soft rug that's affordable, this is a great purchase.

Francetta Handmade Shag White Area Rug

Francetta Handmade Shag White Area Rug

I love this rug. It took me weeks of searching to find a true white (not off white) fluffy rug that would match my white furniture. This rug is super soft, very fluffy, pure white, and has some iridescent strands woven in to give it a really great look. Although it wasn't the cheapest rug out there, I was very happy with the purchase once it arrived--it's definitely worth the cost. I'd highly recommend a padded rug pad to go under the rug too--it increases the rugs overall plushness by quite a bit. The only downfalls are that being a white rug, it very quickly shows any issues. I sprayed it down with scotch guard to hopefully keep spills at bay. The rug also stops my roomba--the rug's fibers are too long for the roomba, and and shuts itself down when it gets onto it. I'm going to have to figure something out to get this to stop happening. Overall, a great purchase.

Assar White Area Rug

We purchased 2 white carpets to replace 2 wool carpets that had been invaded by moths who flew the coup as soon as they smelled the off gassing from the new carpets. We opened the windows and vacuumed several times and the smell disappeared over the next couple of days. There's been no shedding and unlike many shags the carpets still look good after being walked on. The photos are from the first day the carpets were put down and are now laying flat. They arrived in perfect condition however were so tightly wrapped in plastic sleeves it took 2 people struggling for half an hour to remove the smallest carpet. They instruct you not to cut the plastic sleeve so it can be used to return if necessary however there was no way we could remove the 8'x10' carpet so we carefully cut the sleeve with scissors. Now it's all forgotten and we're really pleased with our choice

Roshane Snow White Area Rug

Roshane Snow White Area Rug

I bought two of these for my bedrooms. They were the quality I expected for the price. They both required a bit of vacuuming to fluff them up. The color is not quite snow. It’s a yellowish milk color like 1 milk more than snow. The material is also very plasticy feeling under bare feet. The fibers have a slick feel and not a soft cotton feel but have been easy to keep clean as a result. The rugs also have a small leather strip sewn onto the back. This seems to be to prevent sliding however on both rugs the strips were sewn tighter than the rug is long. So all the edges are curled up and after two weeks have not gone down at all. Overall worth the price and worked for what I needed. Not a showstopper but a good area rug overall for the cost.

Khristiana Shag White Area Rug

Khristiana Shag White Area Rug

So far very happy with this purchase. The carpet is white as described and a very soft material it is not as plush as my last white shag that I bought from Wayfair that lasted about 5 years but I think with a pad underneath it could feel more plush. The carpet itself is thick enough that you do not see the bottom. I think it's to be expected that any kind of shag carpet is going to be more difficult to clean, I have not yet cleaned it but expect that my basic steam cleaner will be able to pull some dog hair and some dirt out but I live in reality and know that it will not stay completely white with a dog in the house. I will try to update as to the longevity of the carpet but so far very happy with this for the price I got it at!

What Whitehall ® Owners Say

“Everything Harold said about the boats is so true. I am 72 years of age and have owned my Solo 14 since 2015. I row on the Ottawa River from April to November and my boat is truly an all water boat. I purchased the Oar Board package sold by Whitehall and enjoyed it also this past summer. However, nothing beats my Solo 14. Thanks Harold for adding another fun dimension to my active life.”
Thanks for the beautiful boat. I love the high level of quality. I am amazed at how easily my boat glides over the water when we are slide seat rowing.
This is the boat that I have been looking for, for thirty years. It’s a real rowing boat I can row in salt water. It’s got speed. I can pull it up on the beach and it’s unsinkable. That’s why I got one, I love it! (John rows the water around Deception Pass and Fidalgo Island, Washington, USA)
Wonderful workout.
My kids love going for rides and even the dog gets to come along!
The best part of towing the Solo was having her with me to row every morning. What a wonderful way to spend time while cruising… I rowed so much I ended up with blisters on my hands and bruises on my bum! THAT is a lot of rowing!
We are enjoying our Solo 14 every day. On the few days we don’t row, we just enjoy looking at her bobbing on the water right in front of our window. (Their Solo 14 anchored in front of their lakeside home in Montenegro)
I love my Oar Board! It’s fun, it’s fast and I get a super workout.
It is such a good workout and being on the water makes it so enjoyable. And my two dogs just love being out in the boat.
The Tango has become mine and I wish I could row all day. Today under the blue blue sky I felt like a part of the universe.
I really enjoy seeing the eddies from my oars as they disappear into the distance. I’ve always kept myself fit but I’ve never been more physically fit since I started rowing the Solo 14.
Having fun doesn’t quite adequately convey how much I love this boat! I have been rowing it in the mornings and it handles waves, swells, wakes and contrary tides so well I am getting more comfortable in it every time I take it out.

If everyone knew how great Rowing feels, in every way, Whitehall Rowboat would be everywhere! #whitehallspirit

March 26, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapses after ship collision

By Helen Regan , Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Rachel Ramirez , Elise Hammond , Aditi Sangal , Tori B. Powell , Piper Hudspeth Blackburn and Kathleen Magramo , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

Baltimore bridge collapse wasn't first major accident for giant container ship Dali

Propulsion failed on the cargo ship that struck the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday as it was leaving port, causing it to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River. Its crew warned Maryland officials of a possible collision because they had lost control.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

An official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to USA TODAY that the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with federal, state, and local officials “to understand the potential impacts of this morning’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

Clay Diamond, executive director, American Pilots’ Association, told USA TODAY power issues are not unusual on cargo ships, which are so large they cannot easily course correct.

“It’s likely that virtually every pilot in the country has experienced a power loss of some kind (but) it generally is momentary,” Diamond said. “This was a complete blackout of all the power on the ship, so that’s unusual. Of course this happened at the worst possible location.”

The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern, according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world. An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth – was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report provided no other information about the deficiency except to note that it was not serious enough to remove the ship from service.

Why did Dali crash into the Baltimore bridge?

Officials said Tuesday they’re investigating the collision, including whether systems on board lost electricity early Tuesday morning, which could be related to mechanical failure, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Accidents at sea, known as marine casualties, are not uncommon, the source told USA TODAY. However, “allisions,” in which a moving object strikes a stationary one with catastrophic results, are far less common. The investigation of the power loss aboard the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, will be a high priority.

In a video posted to social media, lights on the Dali shut off, then turned back on, then shut off again before the ship struck a support pier on the bridge.

Numerous cargo and cruise ships have lost power over the years.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea requires all international vessels to have two independent sources of electricity, both of which should be able to maintain the ship's seaworthiness on their own, according to a safety study about power failures on ships , citing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The Dali's emergency generator was likely responsible for the lights coming back on after the initial blackout, Diamond said.

“There was still some steerage left when they initially lost power,” he said. “We’ve been told the ship never recovered propulsion. The emergency generator is a diesel itself – so if you light off the generator, that’s also going to put off a puff of exhaust.”

Under maritime law, all foreign flagged vessels must be piloted into state ports by a state licensed pilot so the Dali's pilot is licensed by Association of Maryland Pilots .

Diamond described the incident based on information from the Maryland agency that licensed the pilot aboard the ship. His organization represents that group and all other state piloting agencies in the US.

“The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction.

“Neither one was enough. The ship never did regain its engine power.”

How big is the Dali ship?

The Dali is a 984-foot container vessel built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. With a cruising speed of about 22 knots – roughly 25 mph. It has traveled the world carrying goods from port to port.

The ship, constructed of high-strength steel, has one engine and one propeller, according to MarineTraffic.com.

The Dali arrived in Baltimore on Sunday from the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Before that, it had been in New York and came through the Panama Canal.

It remains at the scene of the collapse as authorities investigate.

Who owns and operates the Dali?

It is owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd but managed by Synergy Marine Group, also based in Singapore. It was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo, according to a statement from the shipping company.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation,” Maersk said in the statement.

Synergy, which describes itself as a leading ship manager with more than 600 vessels under its guidance, issued a statement on its website acknowledging the incident and reporting no injuries among its crew and no pollution in the water. There were two pilots on board and 22 crew members in all, according to Synergy, all of them from India.

USA TODAY reached out to Synergy on Tuesday, but the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Biden says Baltimore bridge rebuild should be paid for by the federal government after collapse

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay to rebuild the Baltimore bridge that collapsed early Tuesday after a large cargo ship sailed straight into one of the bridge's support pillars.

"We’re going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said in brief remarks from the White House before he left for North Carolina.

Biden said that it will take "some time" to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which transverses the Patapsco River, but that he told Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, that he's directing the federal government to "move heaven and earth" to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge "as soon as humanly possible."

He said he also plans to visit Baltimore as "quickly" as he can.

"Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families — especially those waiting for the news of their loved one right now," Biden said. "I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime. You just don’t know. It’s just terrible."

Biden said that a search and rescue operation is the top priority and that ship traffic and the Port of Baltimore have been suspended until further notice.

The Port of Baltimore, one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S., is the top port in America for both imports and exports of automobiles and light trucks, Biden said, noting that 850,000 vehicles are moved through the port annually.

"We’re going to get it up and running again as soon as possible. ... Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we’re going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers," he said.

He also said that the bridge is "critical for travel," not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor, saying more than 30,000 vehicles cross it daily.

Several vehicles plunged into the water when the collision occurred at 1:30 a.m. ET. At least six people were still believed to be missing, Moore said at a news conference. Sonar used by rescue crews also detected at least five vehicles in the water, he said: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle.

Moore said the ship, the Dali, which had just left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka, notified authorities about a "power issue" on board and issued a mayday moments before the crash. Moore credited that call with saving people's lives.

The container ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday was headed to Sri Lanka.

Video above: When were the bridge, the Dali last inspected?

Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship, called the Dali — confirmed the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while in control of one or more pilots, who are local specialists who help navigate vessels safely into ports.

It said all 22 crew members, including the two pilots on board, were accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic. The container ship is about 985 feet long and about 157 feet wide, according to the website.

Statement from Synergy Marine Group

Synergy Marine Group released a statement, saying: "Owners and managers of the Singapore-flagged container ship 'DALI' (IMO 9697428) report that the vessel collided with one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Baltimore whilst under pilotage with two pilots onboard, at approximately 01 30 local time on 26th March.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution.

"Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the 'DALI' has now mobilized its Qualified Individual Incident response service. The U.S. Coast Guard and local officials have been notified, and the owners and managers are fully cooperating with federal and state government agencies under an approved plan."

Statement from Maersk

Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying its customers' cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were on board.

Video below: Map tracks path of ship before crash

In a statement published on its website, Maersk said: "In the early hours of 26 March 2024, a vessel collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in damage to the structure. Information on the situation remains pending and we remain in close contact with officials in the area.

"We can confirm that the container vessel 'DALI,'  is owned by Grace Ocean, and operated by Synergy Group. It is time chartered by Maersk and is carrying Maersk customers' cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard the vessel.

"Due to the damage to the bridge and resulting debris, it will not be possible to reach the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore for the time being. In line with this, we are omitting Baltimore on all our services for the foreseeable future, until it is deemed safe for passage through this area.

Video below: Maryland transportation secretary responds to Key Bridge collapse

"For cargo already on water, we will omit the port, and will discharge cargo set for Baltimore, in nearby ports. From these ports, it will be possible to utilise landside transportation to reach final destination instead. Your local Maersk representative can assist in booking this.

"Please note that for cargo set to discharge in Baltimore, delays may occur, as they will need to discharge in other ports. We are keeping a close eye on the safety situation in the area and continuing to assess the viability of transportation through the area. We will inform you of any changes that may impact your cargo.

"We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation. We understand the potential impact this may have on your logistics operation, and will communicate to our customers once we have more details from authorities. Our teams are on hand to support with your planning, should you need any assistance.

"For more information on your cargo, please reach out to your local Maersk representative.

The ship crashed into one of the bridge's supports, causing the structure to snap and buckle at several points and tumble into the water in a matter of seconds. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

Federal Highway Administration records show the bridge was last inspected in May 2021, when inspectors rated it in fair condition overall at a rating of six (satisfactory) out of nine on three parameters. These inspections are supposed to occur every 24 months.

The Key Bridge was indeed last inspected in May 2023 and "found to be in satisfactory condition with an overall rating of fair," per a press aide for U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. That inspection found the bridge was in fair condition as well.

The ship underwent 27 inspections since the Dali came into service in 2016. There were no issues until June, when Chilean authorities found deficiencies in propulsion and the auxiliary machinery.

DHS said the Dali lost propulsion as it left Baltimore Harbor, which makes the June inspection particularly interesting.

The 1.6-mile bridge carried the Baltimore Beltway\Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River, which leads to the Port of Baltimore, a major hub for shipping on the East Coast. Opened in 1977, the bridge is named for the writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Video shows great white shark off Sarasota coast check out boat near whale carcass

The death of sperm whale that had beached itself on a sandbar off Venice Beach, Florida March 10 led to an interesting great white shark encounter with a boat a week later.

After a necropsy was completed on the 44-foot, 70,000-pound whale, its remains were towed at least 10 miles off the Sarasota County coast.

Great white sharks are opportunistic eaters, whose diet consists of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals, according to NOAA Fisheries . That includes occasionally scavenging a dead whale.

Such was the case when boaters near the whale carcass came face-to-face with a great white shark that headbutted a camera and investigated the boat's motor before swimming over to the whale carcass and tearing into it.

According to WFLA , the encounter was captured on video by Brian Jung on March 17, who told the news outlet, “We located the carcass and there were three great white sharks eating off the blubber on the whale.”

Other great white sharks surfaced off Sarasota coast

Several sharks , tracked by the research group OCEARCH , have pinged off Sarasota's coast recently.

On March 5, a 10-foot 5-inch, 600-pound white shark nicknamed Rose , pinged in Sarasota waters.

Penny , a 10-foot 3-inch, 522-pound white shark pinged near Sarasota on Jan. 11 .

Do great white sharks swim around Florida?

Yes. Great white  sharks  migrate south, including Florida , when the water gets cold and food sources become scarce up north, according to  OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Bob Hueter .

Think of them as the snowbirds of sharks.

Most of them tend to stay away from the beaches in continental shelf waters, Hueter said.

Most shark attacks happen in Florida

There were 69 documented unprovoked  shark attacks  around the globe in 2023. The U.S. led the world with 36 attacks and Florida again was the state with the most bites at 16.

Florida shark attacks by county:

  • Volusia County:  8
  • Brevard County : 2
  • St. Lucie County : 2
  • Miami-Dade County: 1
  • Palm Beach County : 1
  • Escambia County : 1
  • Pinellas County: 1

While the U.S. has the most attacks, South Africa has the most shark-related fatalities.

Great white shark facts

Here are some things to know about white sharks, according to  NOAA Fisheries :

  • White sharks grow slowly. Males mature at around 26 years old and females at around 33 years old. Life expectancy is difficult to determine but is estimated to be between 30 and 70 years.
  • White sharks are about 4 feet long at birth but can grow up to about 20 feet long and weigh over 4,000 pounds.
  • White sharks are partially warm-blooded and can maintain their internal body temperature above that of the surrounding water. This allows them to be more active in cooler waters than cold-blooded species.
