Best Midsize Cruiser 40-44 Feet

Winner: Elan GT5

This is going to be a tough category,” said Bill Bolin of the Best Midsize Cruiser 40 to 44 Feet division. “We have three very different but very good boats in this class — the Elan GT5, the Hallberg-Rassy 412 and the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440.”

To begin, Bolin said of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440, “It’s the best Jeanneau I’ve ever seen.” The judging panel agreed, crowning the boat the fleet’s Most Innovative design for 2018.

And what, exactly, led to that designation? “One big reason is the side decks,” said Tim Murphy. “One of the design features is wide-open side decks all the way aft” that permit easy egress going forward without the need to scramble over cockpit coamings. “It’s a clean path ahead,” he noted. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, it’s something we expect to see on more boats, including a scaled-up Jeanneau 490, in the very near future.

“You go down below and, maybe for the first time, Jeanneau has separated the mast compression post from the main bulkhead,” he added. “Now there’s just a compression post that runs down into the main saloon, and the main bulkhead that would’ve come to that position is now several feet forward. So they’ve opened up more space in the main cabin and taken it away from the forward cabin, where they’re arguing you don’t need it quite as much. I think that’s also a fine change. It has twin rudders, and under sail, I thought the helm was beautiful. It’s a solid boat.”

So, too, thought Bolin, was the Hallberg-Rassy 412. “This is the largest aft-cockpit model Hallberg-Rassy has built,” he said. “There is a 40-foot center-cockpit model, but this is a different hull entirely, optimized for upwind performance, with a code zero sail for downwind work. There’s a retractable bow thruster — we saw a lot of those this year — to reduce drag and get the thruster deeper in the water and farther forward as well. The boat we inspected had upgraded sails, and when we went sailing, they were ­spectacular. There was a beautiful full-­battened sail and the boat sailed very well.

“It had a slippery hull and moved nicely,” he added. “We sailed it in 12 to 14 knots of breeze, so there was decent wind. Most of the time we were making 6.5 to 7 knots. As we fell off on a beam and then a broad reach, I think this was the first boat where we didn’t see a drastic drop in speed. It performed well on all points of sail. It had a nice big wheel and great visibility forward. It would be an easy boat to single­hand. I really like it.”

“This is a mainsail-driven boat, and I think that might explain why it’s so peppy off the wind,” said Murphy. “So the sail plan is a small jib with a big main. They’re one of the few remaining builders that are giving us a true traveler but also genoa sheet-lead controls from the cockpit, showing that they’re concerned about sail shape, and rightly so. Going down below, it’s the classic Hallberg-Rassy mahogany interior, and it’s just lovely, as lovely as it ever was. We’ve talked about good handholds, but on this boat, they weren’t just good, they were also beautiful. The fiddles are these beautiful rounded shapes that are perfect for your hand. They look great and feel great. Very nice.”

That left the Slovenian-built, 43-foot-4-inch Elan GT5. The company builds dedicated lines of racing and cruising boats, but, said Murphy, “The GT5 is sort of a hybrid between those two lines. It has a high-­performance hull and a very comfortable cruising interior.

“Sailing it was pretty joyful,” he continued. “We sailed in very light air and it was still moving very nicely. It looked really good on the water. It really seemed to have answered the performance side of Elan’s DNA.”

“The company is doing some progressive things in terms of systems,” said Ed Sherman. “The electrical system on the boat has a nice, graphically designed power distribution panel with push buttons that light up things to let you know, for instance, that the running lights are on and that sort of thing.”

“I was really taken with this boat,” said Bolin. “It looks like a race boat from a distance, and as Tim mentioned, its DNA is rooted in that. But you go below and it’s very unique, with lots of special features. I like the galley-­forward arrangement a lot. You come down into the main cabin and you’ve got max beam where the living quarters are, you have a great sense of entry. Figuratively speaking, you’re not walking through the back door and the kitchen to get into the house. I think this layout makes very good use of space. And there’s lots of storage. Finally, I’d say it’s a high-tech boat, vacuum-bagged with 100 percent vinylester. There’s a lot to like about it.”

At the end of the day, Bolin’s colleagues agreed, which is why they chose the Elan GT5 as the Best Midsize Cruiser 40 to 44 Feet.

How can you enjoy life at anchor as much as while sailing? With the innovative flared hull design of the Oceanis 40.1, BENETEAU has broken new ground but made no concessions. The result is a hull that has true speed potential and is stiff under sail. Above the waterline, her deck plan and ultra-spacious interior by  Nauta Design  is unheard-of on a boat this size. You cannot help feeling that you are aboard a 45 foot cruiser!

Interior Design

With your choice of either a  walnut or white oak , the styling of the interior by Italian designer Nauta is remarkably bright and excels in the skillful arrangement of the living spaces. She is available with two, three, or four cabins, and a  C-shaped galley  to the starboard that offers an abundance of storage and a spacious countertop. On the port side, there is a large salon with a table, complete with a removable bench. A chart table at the foot of the companionway provides ample working space. Everything is modular, so that everyone can live the way they want and enjoy sailing wherever the wind takes them.

The philosophy of the Oceanis 40.1 is to make sailing and mooring pleasurable. The strengths of this cruiser, studied in detail by the architect Marc Lombard and the BENETEAU design office, are unrivalled interior space, a huge deck plan, and the ability to clock up miles when you are cruising.

LIFE AT ANCHOR

The ergonomics and easy maneuvering in the cockpit make life onboard simple. Nothing interferes with the joy of life at anchor. Feel like splashing around the boat in an idyllic creek? The transom easily converts to an extensive swim platform, similar in size to the ones you find on the largest Oceanis cruising yachts. Having access to the sea is an integral part of life on a sailing yacht, and this model is one of a kind. 

SEEKING EXCITEMENT UNDER SAIL…

As there is no one way to sail, and because everyone takes their cruising at their own pace, the Oceanis 40.1 comes in several versions. Sailors keen on performance can choose the First Line Pack, with a taller mast and a deeper draft. Alternatively, the in-mast furling system and self-tacking jib will make maneuvering easier when shorthanded. A classic mast for a semi-full batten mainsail is also available.

HEAVENS ABOVE, SO MUCH SPACE!

The hatches and the many hull and coachroof portholes, two of which face towards the cockpit, fill the boat with natural light and ventilation, making her exceptionally bright. The Oceanis 40.1 comes in 4 different versions with two, three, and four cabins to accommodate everyone’s idea of a holiday on board. Couples and large families will feel at home. The owner version has a cabin with an ensuite shower and head, and a bed easily accessible from either side. The four-cabin layout has two forward berths with bunk beds.

40 foot yacht: guide to buying new and used boats.

When purchasing a boat or a yacht, the type of boating you intend to do will provide general direction towards what type of yacht you will need. Other questions to consider are: What is your perfect day on the water? Will you be doing plenty of day boating, or more long-range cruising? Do you plan to use the yacht for fishing, cruising or both? How much time do you plan to spend on the yacht (day, weekends, weeks, etc.)? How many people do you plan to take on the yacht with you on a typical trip? Do you plan to sleep overnight on the yacht? Where do you plan to keep the yacht? What is your prior boating experience? Is speed important to you?

The size of vessel is one of the most important elements to decide upon. The 40 foot mark is a common boundary line for boaters searching for a new vessel. Dream Big: New Boats Over 40 Feet

Looking for an upgrade? Wish your boat were just a little bit bigger? Put these new boats, all longer than 40 feet, on your shopping list — or at least on your wish list.

Sportfishers.

Sportfishing boats have something of a split personality. They're heavily powered, designed with wave-slicing hulls, and built to get to the fishing grounds swiftly. On the other hand, they have luxurious appointments below decks for the crew to relax on the ride home or for entertaining.

Regulator 41

This center-console is a serious offshore fishing machine. The new 41 is the largest ever from the North Carolina builder and is designed to get you out to the canyons and back quickly, in comfort and style. With a deep-V hull featuring 24 degrees of dead-rise at the transom, this hull requires plenty of power to get it moving, but that comes in spades from the quadruple 350-hp Yamaha outboards mounted on the Armstrong bracket. The boat exceeded 60 mph in testing, but according to published performance data, the most economical speed seems to be in the 35 mph range, still plenty fast enough for most folks, but with a vastly reduced thirst to make that 600 gallons of fuel last longer.

Quadruple 350-hp Yamaha outboards on the Regulator 41 offer speeds topping 60 mph, though toning down the throttle to the 35-mph range is a bit more economical.

Options include an upper helm above the T-top and an outdoor galley behind the standard three-position seat/leaning post. The console interior features a small galley, a dinette that coverts to a double berth, and an enclosed head with shower, so overnight stays are a possibility for a couple. A diesel generator fitted below the cockpit sole provides power to the air conditioner, battery charger, water heater, and other domestic loads. There's no getting away from the fact that this is a big center-console, but the Yamaha Helm Master joystick control system eases nerves when it's time to bring the boat back into the dock. Viking's first 48 convertible, launched more than 30 years ago, was an almost instant hit. A revamped model appeared in 2002, and this latest model debuted at the 2016 boat shows. Equipped with a pair of MAN diesel engines, the new 48C is designed to cruise in the 30-knot range, depending on the engines. The boat is about fishing first, and it features almost 125 square feet of cockpit space. That's not to say Viking has taken any shortcuts below decks.

The accommodation spaces are roomy and luxurious and can be customized to the owner's taste. Viking is a semicustom builder, but the first yacht featured a large flat-screen television with a surround-sound system that would put many home theaters to shame, a gourmet galley, and sumptuous staterooms to relax in after a hard day's fishing. Joinery choices are either teak or walnut in either satin or gloss finish.

With these boats, it's all about the journey. Most trawlers travel at sedate speeds, typically below 10-knots, and while the so-called “fast trawler” has emerged, trawlers tend to be displacement or semi-displacement hulls, so speed is governed more by hull length than by engine power.

The new Krogen Open 50 model reflects a great deal of customer feedback, which led to a design departure: an open and continuous saloon/galley/pilothouse main deck. Rather than several steps to the helm, everything from the large rear cockpit through the saloon to the wheelhouse is on one level, making for better socializing. All of the attributes that Krogen is known for — exquisite joinery, rugged construction, and phenomenal seakeeping ability — are still here on the Open 50. Krogen isn't straying far from its target audience of voyagers and liveaboards. Available with either single or twin John Deere diesels, and with a 1,240-gallon fuel capacity, the anticipated range is 2,100 miles at 8 knots, with the single engine model, but slow down to 6, and that jumps to a staggering 5,000 miles, enough for an Atlantic crossing. The Nordic Tug 44 is a semi-displacement hull that delivers slow and steady cruising. At a leisurely 8 knots from a single 510-hp Volvo diesel, the 44 uses less than three gallons of fuel per hour and has a range in excess of 1,700 miles, so stops at the pump are fewer and farther between.

Rather than cram in lots of berths, the layout has a huge master forward, with an island queen, along with a generous guest cabin aft. This is a boat designed for a couple to cruise in comfort, with the option of welcoming friends and family on board once in a while. The main saloon, with galley, is almost the full beam of the boat, and just three steps lead to the separate pilothouse, which has internal steps leading to the optional flybridge; the pilothouse is a great new feature for this year, keeping everyone inside if the weather turns nasty.

If you want space on board, it's hard to beat a catamaran on room for living, entertaining, lounging, and personal space. While sailing craft make up the majority of catamarans, the popularity of power catamarans is growing. With an engine in each hull, the widely spaced props offer superior maneuverability in tight areas.

So you like sailing, but you're not too keen on living life at an angle? Love sailboats, but the lack of space would drive you nuts? If you answered yes to these questions, then a catamaran could fit your future. Nothing touches a cat for interior volume, and the Leopard 48 doesn't disappoint. For maximum sleeping space, opt for the four-cabin layout, which also has room for four heads with showers. But if the number of guests will be more limited, then the three-cabin layout is the way to go, which gives over the entire starboard hull to the owner, with a large queen cabin aft and a settee and voluminous head and shower compartment forward.

On deck, a raised helm station gives excellent all-round visibility, and the large cockpit is seemingly big enough to host the Super Bowl. Built by Robertson and Caine in South Africa, the Leopard 48 is the private version of The Moorings 48 charter version, so if you want to try before you buy, book a charter vacation and give a similar boat a workout for a week or two.

Aspen C120

Proa or cat? To the outsider, the Aspen looks just like any other power catamaran. But take a closer look and you'll notice that the starboard hull is about 30 percent wider than the port hull. Instead of having two engines, the Aspen has only one — in the starboard hull. To prevent the boat from turning in circles, the boat has a narrower port hull, and thus less hull drag, so the boat tracks straight. The standard Volvo 330-hp motor uses less than 2 gallons of fuel per hour when cruising at 8 knots, but if you want, the boat can top out at close to 20 knots.

The generous beam means there's room for two double cabins, each with its own head compartment, plus a single, which shares a head with the guest double. The saloon is where you'll spend most of your time, though, and thanks to the generous beam, there's plenty of living space. The helm is forward to starboard and has Stidd chairs for captain and mate, while aft is the dinette and wraparound settee. The galley is to port, ahead of the door to the cockpit, which has a ladder to the flybridge.

Sailing Cruisers

What could be more exhilarating than skimming across the water as your boat heels in the breeze? Modern sailing cruisers incorporate advanced rigging designs to make them easier to sail, and larger yachts often feature spacious galleys and cabins, larger social areas in the cockpit, and creature comforts.

Unveiled for the first time to the U.S. market at the 2016 Miami International Boat Show, the Oceanis 41.1 is a great example of a modern, midsized sailing yacht. Twin wheels, split backstays, a chine crease, and an opening transom that turns into a generous swim platform have become commonplace in recent years, and they're here on this latest from French builder Beneteau.

The cockpit is wide and ideal for socializing. The rig is easily handled with all lines leading aft. With the port and starboard sheet winches close to the two wheels for the convenience of the person driving, the boat could be single-handed without too much trouble. The foresail is self-tacking, so bringing the boat about is as simple as it gets. The mainsheet sits clear of the cockpit on top of a large arch, keeping the cockpit free of lines.

There are a number of options for accommodations below, depending on the owner's desire, but there's no getting away from the sleek European feel to this yacht, which is apparent as soon as one descends the companionway. There's a popular bumper sticker that says, "Life is too short to own an ugly boat." No one will ever call the M42 ugly. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built to order by Morris Yachts in Maine, the M42 looks elegant from any angle.

Rather than squeeze in as much accommodation as possible belowdecks, the M42 is more about spending time enjoying the surroundings as you slice through the water on this yacht. Morris refers to the M42 as a coastal cruiser. With bunks, the galley, and the head below, the M42 is set up to be sailed by a couple or even a singlehander for days or extended weekends on the water.

All control lines, sheets, and halyards have been led under covers to control/winch pods in the cockpit, within easy reach of the helmsman, leaving the deck clear and safe. Power Cruisers

Buy a power cruiser longer than 40 feet and you are likely to get some serious luxury for your money. Unlike trawlers, which may feature equally well-appointed interiors, power cruisers often have planning hulls and larger motors so if you want to get some place in a hurry these boats could be the choice for you.

Like the Regal 53, the Sea Ray 450 Sundancer has a glass door at the rear of the saloon, with the main living spaces all on the same level. There are so many windows on the main deck that Sea Ray actually refers to this as a sunroom rather than saloon. A retractable sunroof lets in even more light and air. Power comes from a pair of Cummins 550-hp diesel engines, with the option of either V-drives or Zeus pod drives.

The Sea Ray 450 Sundancer has a full-width master and other high-end appointments such as a media room that can accommodate a 50-inch flat-screen television.

Accommodations below include a full-width master. Although Sea Ray uses darker trim woods, the interior of the boat is light thanks to large windows below that can hardly be called ports. Other features that give the boat an air of sophistication include solid surface counters in the galley and heads, glass-bowl vanities, and an optional outdoor kitchen and grill adjacent to the swim platform. The largest model in the Regal lineup, the 53 Coupe is all about entertaining and having fun on the water. The definition of the best luxury yacht will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. This year’s nominees in the luxury yacht category of the European Yacht of the Year Awards proved that perfectly.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market.

The best luxury yachts

Best luxury yacht winner 2024 – arcona 50.

When you enter the fiercely competitive 50ft luxury performance yacht market you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it move away from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors.

The on trend styling inside and out is backed up by a premium level of build and finish quality and sailing performance – particularly if you have the performance sails, traveller and deep (2.95m) keel options the test boat carried, although the latter does limit your berthing and anchoring options.

While I doubt it’ll be raced or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing: a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our jury, Jochen Rieker, puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks. She wins by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault.”

This model is, uniquely, available in two versions: this more conventional 50CS with aft master cabin, or the forward owner’s suite version on the aft cockpit Contest 49CS . We ran a full test on the latter after spending two days aboard in the North Sea, where that noticeably high freeboard, which may not aid boarding nor windage, helped keep us dry on deck in a steady Force 6 gusting 7.

As the 50CS proved, this Judel/Vrolijk design keeps slipping along in the light stuff too, providing enjoyable sailing in 6 knots breeze under a code sail. The centre cockpit offers a deep protected guest area, but also links well to the spacious aft deck.

And the Wetzels-Brown-designed interiors of Contests today are stunning and hard to match. The engineering, access to usable stowage, details and finish on the 50CS is first class and to get this level of quality at this size is special.

Both Contest and X-Yachts are early adopters of hybrid power, offering their bluewater cruisers with optional electric drives. For the XC 47 this was designed-in from the start to offer Oceanvolt’s award-winning new 25kW regenerative drive.

The XC 47 is another wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure. That should come as no surprise to any X aficionados, but what really struck me most about this yacht was the stowage, and the forethought needed to create that, together with how practical it has been made.

That may sound slightly anticlimactic but ask any long-term cruiser and stowage is always a priority. On deck, this constitutes a huge lazarette and sail locker, plus clever systems for launching a dinghy via davits and a liferaft canister, while below decks every square inch of space has been used effectively, with lockers hinged with gas struts.

It’s clear the Danish yard went to considerable time and effort, even building a full mock up of the interior that could be canted 20° each way.

If the deck saloon style looks didn’t sell this model to all – this is the first full non-Jeppesen designed X – the jury were converted once they’d taken the helm. ‘Quirky’ became ‘muscular and bold’. The ease with which it can be sailed from the cockpit was also appreciated.

While I understand many offshore cruisers like a protected centre cockpit and more sun protection, the attention to detail, stowage and practicalities, combined with the direct steering, motion and enjoyable sailing this X offers make it a standout new offering.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Meanwhile the Jeanneau Yachts 55 stands out for different, unique reasons in this category, offering a completely new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a novel accommodation layout. Its focus is on outdoor living space.

What helps place this in a luxury bracket is not simply the price or the creative input of superyacht specialist design duo Philppe Briand and Andrew Winch, rather that its layout creates a palatial amount of private space for the owner’s suite. Guest cabins have their own direct access from the extensive cockpit via gullwing doors.

It certainly makes sense for solo owners or couples using it as a warm water apartment. How many people this will suit is another question, as it segregates any guests, crew or children from the galley and saloon.

I used the term monocat when I first viewed it, as the 55 really does attempt to mix the two worlds, particularly in terms of providing owner privacy and lounging space. Choose the rigid hard top and windshield and there’s a vast amount of covered area including a dinette and chart table – plus a bimini can shade all that extensive aft deck too.

The penalty comes in additional weight and wetted surface, and is felt in the handling and performance, the latter particularly in lighter breeze with the optional in-mast furling, self tacking headsail and shallow draught package we had. However, it’s set up to be easily managed from the mid cockpit with good visibility from the twin helms and easy circulation thanks to the ramped side decks. Full report in YW February 2024.

Best luxury yacht 2023

Best luxury yacht winner – oyster 495.

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer.

At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb.

Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

The first yacht fully conceived under CEO Richard Hadida’s reign, this is also the smallest completely new Oyster 495 since 2005 – and it’s a triumph. It was our September 2022 cover star in which we featured the full review from our Oyster 495 three day test .

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a very different beast indeed to the 62 it replaces as flagship for the Beneteau range. The yard has learned plenty from the success of the First 53/OY 54 and wanted to create a 60 in this style and with the same deck layout (albeit larger and wider) and ease of circulation.

The construction experience of the smaller model clearly helped too, as this is a whopping five tonnes lighter than the bulky OY62 and with a deeper (2.6m) keel. The telling result is on the water. It feels sporty to helm and we averaged a knot slower than the single figure 6-8 knot windspeeds upwind and matched them reaching with Code 0 and a slight swell.

The vast cockpit works well, sheltered below the semi rigid bimini, it has plentiful lounging space with sailing systems led aft to the twin helms. The interior sees a 3+3 layout, where Beneteau wanted to get rid of the corridor effect of the OY62. The galley is forward to help open out space, while the forward suite with offset berth and headboard aft works well to give space with privacy.

This is an attractive, voluminous yacht that leaves a good overall impression whether under sail, on or below decks.

Ice 62 Targa

It all looks pretty funky below decks on the Ice 62 Targa too, especially if you’re watching the masthead fore and aft cameras (plus bow and prop cam) on central displays mounted in the saloon while you slip out of the dock! The Ice is a seriously impressive, contemporary yacht, one that in looks, performance and execution, won over many of the judges.

The first to launch is a highly customised project for a passionate sailing owner who covers long distances solo – he’d already sailed it 3,000 miles around the Med that autumn. It’s impressively stiff, sails handsomely and, thanks to a telescopic keel, points well. We matched single figure windspeeds, and clocked up to the high 9s in 12 knots wind.

Umberto Felci’s team spent 4,000 hours on the design, providing lots of space and light to the interior and a chillout zone in the semi raised saloon. This was easily the coolest looking yacht, with its aggressive reverse bow, chamfered gunwales and carbon T-top bimini, and all engineered and built to a high standard.

Five Top Yachts For 2024

CL Yachts CLB80

During the Miami International Boat Show last February, a bevy of builders introduced a host of new models for yachting enthusiasts of all kinds. Attendees had the opportunity to see enhanced helm stations, eco-friendly propulsion options, plush creature comforts, and more. Here, we offer a glimpse at some of the yachts that were seen and talked about, whether they’re already under construction or just now coming off the drawing boards for early orders.

CL Yachts CLB80

CLB80: Made for Different Cruising Styles

CL Yachts is adding a fourth model to its B Series: the CLB80, which joins the CLB65, CLB72 and CLB88 flagship. Aboard the CLB80, owners can choose a forward or aft galley. With the latter, there’s a stool-height dining table that can tuck away against the galley counter, becoming a high bar or a side table for different styles of entertaining. Owners also can choose a single or double helm station, depending on how they prefer to cruise. All four guest staterooms are belowdecks, including an amidships master that spans the 22-foot-6-inch beam. The VIP stateroom is forward with a skylight for additional natural light. There are also two crew cabins with separate access, located between the engine room and beach club.

Saxdor 400 GTO

Saxdor 400 GTO: A New Flagship

Saxdor Yachts is a Finnish yard that was established in 2019. It offers three models: the 270 GTO, the 320 GTO and the recently launched 400 GTO. Note the size of the foldout balcony in the image below; there’s another one on the starboard side of the vessel, substantially increasing the outdoor space when the boat is at anchor. Guests can have snacks or lunch in that shaded section or set out a spread forward on the table beneath open skies. Belowdecks are two staterooms: one forward and one amidships. For cruising families, the shipyard offers the option of adding a kids cabin. Standard power is a pair of 300 hp Mercury Marine V-8s, though the boat is designed for a maximum of 800 hp, if owners want other outboards at the transom.

Cicem TM 37

Vicem TM 37: Sport Fishing in High Style

The TM in the model name of Vicem’s TM 37 stands for “Tuna Masters.” This is a line of center-console boats that the Turkish builder launched earlier this year, with more models expected to come at different lengths overall. Hull No. 1 of the TM 37 is powered by triple 350 hp Mercury Marine outboards that reportedly give eager-to-get-there anglers a top hop of nearly 48 knots. The standard power package is a pair of the 350s, which Vicem says allows for a top speed of about 40 knots. Range is estimated at 350 nautical miles, with a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer as part of the standard-equipment package for more-comfortable time spent on board. Belowdecks are twin berths and a wet head for overnights. Electronics at the helm are by Raymarine.

Cruisers Yachts 55 Fly

Cruisers Yachts 55 Fly: Coming this Spring

The 55 Fly is the first model in the new Flybridge series from Cruisers Yachts, which also offers Cantius and GLS series. Expect the official launch of the 55 Fly this spring, with the second model in the Flybridge series on tap for next year. Luiz De Basto collaborated with the Cruisers team on interiors, using the design theme “back to nature in a tech world.” Josh Delforge, vice president of operations and engineering at Cruisers, says that one goal with the 55 Fly was best-in-class water interaction—hence the foldout side platform and sizable swim platform shown in the image below. Power will be twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s, allowing extra volume to devote to the accommodations for six guests.

Crincess Y95

Princess Y95: High Style Meets 23-Knot Speed

The Y95 is the new flagship of Princess Yachts’ four-model Y Class of open-flybridge designs in larger sizes. There are five en suite staterooms for a total of 10 guests, with the master spanning the full beam on the main deck. The flybridge is set up for driving and entertaining in comfort. There are twin adjustable helm seats, along with a forward-facing L-shaped seating area for guests. The dining table up top seats 10 people (additional dining space is on the main deck). A bar on the flybridge includes a sink, an electric barbecue, a hob and a drawer refrigerator. Power is a pair of 2,000 hp MAN V-12s that, according to Princess, allow for a top speed of 23 knots. Crew quarters are abaft the engine room, separate from the guest spaces.

Based on Lagoon’s Seventy 7 model, the newcomer was built in Bordeaux, France. The cat features six generous staterooms for up to 12 guests and cabins for four crew. Ponant says seafarers can expect personalized service, including a private chef, tailored activities, and other high-end touches.

 “The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.” 

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun. 

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.
