Look at the amenities offered by each club, such as a clubhouse, dining facilities, fitness center, and boat storage. Consider which amenities are important to you and your boating lifestyle.

Check out the activities offered by each club, such as sailing races, social events, and educational programs. Consider which activities you’re interested in and which clubs offer them.

Membership fees

Yacht club membership fees can vary widely, so it’s important to consider the cost when choosing a club. Look at the initiation fee, annual dues, and any other fees associated with membership.

Each yacht club has its own unique culture and community. Consider the atmosphere and whether it aligns with your personality and interests.

Two Southern California yacht clubs recognized on Top 50 list

southern california yacht club

Platinum Clubs organization names Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC to worldwide compilation.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—Newport Harbor and San Diego yacht clubs both earned a spot on the Top 50 Platinum Yacht Clubs for 2020-2021, it was recently announced. The worldwide list is compiled by Platinum Clubs of the World.

Placing on the list means a yacht club is presented with the title of “Five Star Clubs of Excellence.”

San Diego YC was founded in 1886 and has recently hosted sailing events such as Women’s Winter Invitational, Yachting Cup, the CA500, the SoCal 300, Dutch Shoe Marathon, International Masters Regatta and Lipton Cup.

Newport Harbor YC first opened its doors in 1916 and hosts the Newport to Cabo Race every two years, among other regattas.

Other yacht clubs making the Top 50 list included: Annapolis Yacht Club, Beach Point Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Nassau Yacht Club (Bahamas), Raffles Marina (Singapore), Real Club Nautico de Vigo (Spain), Royal Bombay Yacht Club (India), Royal Cork Yacht Club (Ireland), The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Société des Régates du Havre (France), Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Santo Amaro (Brazil).

Two Southern California yacht clubs earned an Honorable Mention, scoring within three points of the Top 50 list: Balboa Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey).

Fifty yacht clubs are selected based upon points awarded by a selected panel. A yacht club must score at least 8 points to qualify for the Top 50 list. Scoring is awarded as follows: 100 points for a top three club, 80 points for a ranking between four and 10, 60 points for 11 to 25 ranking, 40 points for 26-60 ranking, 20 points for 51-75 ranking and 10 points for 76-100 ranking.

Voting was conducted by 116 panelists from all around the world; panelists hailed from the United States, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Panelists vote every two years (odd years). Finalists are selected based upon submitted recommendations from panelists and applications from yacht clubs from around the world. A final ballot is eventually created and sent out to panelists. There is a 30-day voting period, with the election conducted electronically (via a third party).

“Points are awarded by the position and ranking that the panelist assigns to each club. The total number of points is calculated and divided by the total number of panelists who have visited a club to determine the final points score,” a Platinum Clubs of the World statement about the voting process said.

The Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board of the Platinum Clubs of the World compiled the Top 50 list. Platinum Clubs of America have been recognizing top yacht clubs for more than 20 years.

Shawn Mulligan in blues

Shawn Mulligan SCYA Staff Commodore Historical Archive Chair

The history of yachting in Southern California is comprised of a diverse cast of characters and events that not only shaped the sport of yachting but helped to promote Southern California as a world leader in sporting excellence.  The Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) was formed in 1921 to encourage sportsmanship on the water as well as to promote recognition of the full potential of Southern California’s waterways and weather during a time when much of the world only knew of Hollywood.

The history section of this website was started by Southern California Yachting Association specifically to celebrate our Centennial Year and to provide an educational platform and library to archive the assemblage of Southern California Yachting history.  This history encompasses rare photos and film dating back as early as the 1920’s of the Olympics, prohibition and early Hollywood in the world of yachting. In addition, you will find stories of the individuals who promoted yachting in all of its forms, including sailing, powerboat racing, angling and most importantly, stories that show the enjoyment of our beautiful weather and coastline from years long past to now.

Today, SCYA encompasses yacht clubs as far north as Morro Bay, all the way down into Baja Mexico, with all points in between and reaching out as far east as Nevada and Arizona.   We ask that you enjoy this unique and fascinating history.  Please come back often to see new history that is being added all the time.  We also ask that you contact us if you have any interesting photos, film or stories you would like to archive and share.

SCYA Film Archive Heritage Project

Within this website, focused on Southern California Yachting history, you will find many photos and stories that celebrate Southern California’s boating history from the past 100 years. What you will also find, within this website, is historic film footage of boating activities that are not limited to Southern California yacht club activities. Yes, as a result of nearly 2 decades of searching high and low for old movies in 8mm, 16mm and quite frankly any format, we came across an abundance of history far beyond yacht racing in Southern California.

We felt that this unique history should not be discarded into a closet or the cutting room floor but rather celebrated and enjoyed by everyone no matter what part of the Country they reside in. Included, but not limited to, you will experience never before seen footage of Schooner races in New York during the 1930’s and yachting in Florida in the 1940’s. Some of the film that was salvaged captures anglers from the Tuna Club in Avalon during the early 1930’s along with some of the first Kodak color movie film footage of angling big game from 1936 – 1937. Our film editing group is always finding new film and on the lookout for any and all memories regarding boating. Please visit this site often to view new video clips and please share any memories you may have in photo format, stories or home movies. We would enjoy seeing and sharing your stories and images with the rest of those who have a love of the water and the history behind our fascination of the Sea!!!

We want to make this site as interactive as possible… We ask, most importantly, that you please enjoy the memories and stories provided within. Any additional information you may possess regarding the content is crucial to the better development of the historic insight and integrity of the photos, stories and film bank. We are currently working with thousands of feet of old home movie footage and still discovering what we have, so please come back and enjoy new content being added regularly.

Best Boating Clubs in Southern California

Southern California has always been a premier location for great boating communities and clubs. From South Bay San Diego all the way to Dana Point in Orange County, you will find some of the very best boating clubs on the west coast. Ballast Point Yachts, Inc., a trusted San Diego yacht brokerage , explores some of the most popular groups along the SoCal coast.

Sailing San Diego

Sailing San Diego is one of the best local meet-up groups for boaters. This club allows fellow sailors to get to know one another and take laid back trips around the San Diego Bay area. A key reason that this meet-up is so popular is because all organizers are experienced sailors. They also provide shared cost for large group charter boats.

Mission Bay Yacht Club

Another favored San Diego boating club is the Mission Bay Yacht Club. The club provides amazing events for boat owners including competitive racing and junior boating instruction year-round. The Mission Bay Yacht Club was even voted the best “One-Design Yacht Club of The Year” by the U.S. Sailing Association.

Dana Point Sunset Sailing

Dana Point is home to the popular boater’s group called Dana Point Sunset Sailing. Here is where boaters of all ages and backgrounds join together for evening trips along the coast. What makes this club the best in Orange County is that the group is more heavily focused on community and offers a more personalized approach to the social boating experience. The group leader will even give you pointers on improving your sailing if needed.

Long Beach Single’s Yacht Club

Boaters up north don’t want to miss out on Long Beach’s best boating club – the Long Beach Single’s Yacht Club. This unique club allows you to meet new friends and potential dates while out at sea. The best part is that no boating experience is needed, making this the perfect environment for beginners.

Getting involved with likeminded people involved in the San Diego boating lifestyle is one of the biggest perks to owning a vessel of your own. If you’re still on the hunt for that perfect boat, contact Ballast Point Yachts, Inc. today. From helping you buy a used boat in San Diego to offering affordable financing options, we can handle the entire process for you from start to finish. Call (619) 222-3620 – we look forward to hearing from you!

Sailing Club, Sailboat Rentals & Sailing Lessons

Closure of long beach facility.

The marina we operate out of in Long Beach has not been able to negotiate a lease extension with the Hotel Maya and the hotel has decided to close the marina. We are therefore forced to close our Long Beach club and are in the process of moving the fleet back to San Diego. There are unfortunately no other marinas in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor that can accommodate the fleet along with an office to run the operation. We regret having to close the Long Beach club but at this point we have no other viable options. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at 619-291-7245 or email at [email protected]

Pharrell Sets Sail on His Yacht Rock Era With Surprise New Album

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Pharrell appears to be celebrating his 51st birthday today, April 5, with a gift to fans — a new album that’s totally free to stream and download through one specific website .

To say there aren’t many confirmable details about the 10-track project is an understatement. Based purely on the album artwork, the project appears to be called Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1: City of Limitless Access and might be credited to a group called Virginia — though, for all we know, Virginia is part of the title.

And while it’s definitely Pharrell singing on the album, his name isn’t attached anywhere to the project, not even the metadata of the Mp3s if you download the LP (it’s similarly unclear if he played all the instruments himself or brought in some collaborators). The musician hasn’t promoted the album on his website or social media.

Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1 (if that is the official title) marks Pharrell’s first solo album (if we can actually consider this a solo album) since 2014’s Girl . He’s released two other collaborative singles this year, “Good People” with Mumford and Sons and “Doctor (Work It Out)” with Miley Cyrus.

Pharrell also has a couple of movie projects in the works. The first, announced earlier this year, will be a biopic of sorts but told entirely through Lego brick animation (it’s fittingly called Piece By Piece ). The other is an as-yet-untitled collaboration with filmmaker Michel Gondry , which will be set in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1977 (where Pharrell grew up) and feature a cast of Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

More than $150 in credits coming to Southern Californians’ utility bills this month

Most Californians will receive a credit on their gas and electric bills this month as part of the California Climate Credit program, which aims to offset rising prices for customers while reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Southern Californians can look forward to paying $159 less for gas and electricity this month, with another credit coming in October.

That breaks down to $86 off your electric bill in April from Southern California Edison and another $86 off in October. Plus, you’ll see a $73 credit on this month’s bill from Southern California Gas.

This year’s climate credits are the largest in the 10 years the program has been operating. Last year, SoCalGas customers received a $51 credit and SCE customers received two $71 credits.

EPA issues new clean air rules for heavy-duty trucks. California’s rules are tougher

The federal regulations don’t mandate electric trucks or school buses, unlike California’s tougher standards. But the EPA’s rules will curtail a billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

March 29, 2024

The money comes from the state’s greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program, which was created by the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 to drive down carbon emissions.

Each year, the California Air Resources Board sets a declining cap on the amount of greenhouse gas that can be emitted by power plants, fuel suppliers and large industrial facilities. This includes roughly 450 entities that are collectively responsible for 75% to 85% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The state’s top five greenhouse gas emitters are all oil refineries, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

These companies can then buy “allowances” that are each worth 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by driving a car from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh. Allowances are sold at quarterly auctions and can be used immediately or saved for the future.

Most manufacturer and utility companies receive a share of allowances for free, while oil and other industrial sectors have to buy their allowances. There are fewer allowances available each year as the statewide carbon cap declines, and the price of each allowance also increases annually. The rising cost of allowances provides an incentive for companies to emit less carbon.

The most recent allowance auction, held in February, saw more than 51 million allowances sold for $41 each, for a total of nearly $2.1 billion in revenue. The state, along with electric and gas utility companies, is able to sell allowances at an auction. The state puts its proceeds into its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is used to incentivize energy efficiency and other climate-related projects.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY-CA-MARCH 18, 2024: An adult male red diamond rattlesnake is photographed at San Timoteo Canyon in Riverside County on March 18, 2024. (Christina House / Los Angeles Times)

Rattlesnakes on Santa Catalina Island have learned that it pays to be unusually aggressive

It pays to rattle more, bite more often and inject more toxin on an island where rattlesnakes could be trampled or stomped to death by imported goats, pigs, bison and deer, according to a study published in the scientific journal Toxins.

The utility companies use their profits to provide credits to their customers on behalf of the state, while the California Public Utilities Commission oversees them and ensures compliance. The credits are meant to help offset the increase in utility prices that the cap-and-trade program creates by putting a price on carbon.

Allowance auctions generate about $4 billion each year. The value of climate credits continues to increase as the prices of carbon allowances increase.

Through the California Climate Credit program , SoCalGas customers have received $276 in credits since 2018, and SCE customers received $806 in credits from 2014 to 2023.

The cap-and-trade program has had its critics . As The Times noted in 2022, it was quickly faulted by environmental justice advocates for failing to improve the lives of low-income people of color living alongside major polluting facilities.

But it appears to have played a role in lowering carbon emissions while also earning money for the state. The 2006 climate legislation set a target for California to reduce planet-warming emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, a goal that the state reached four years early.

The next goal is to cut emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, and 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

This year, climate credits will be sent to more than 11 million residential electric customers, more than 1 million small-business electric customers and more than 13 million residential natural gas customers.
