About Topaz

After the success of Rainbow (2012), we were delighted to build another J Class sailing yacht. Topaz (previously called J8 ) was built based on the designs of Frank Cabot Paine. Paine (1890-1952) was born in Boston, as the son of three times defending challenger of the America’s Cup. Besides designing several impressive, large sailing yachts, he became well known by designing certain sailing yachts for a specific class. These were sailing yachts suitable for competitive racing in the J Class (23-26.5 metres) of the first regattas of the America’s Cup in the 1930s.

Even though the spectacular Topaz had been brought to life on paper as early as 1935, it was not until many years later that she was actually developed by the renowned architectural firm Hoek Design Naval Architects and delivered to her owner. Topaz was designed to sail as Super J in the America’s Cup and though she was built for competitive racing, she simultaneously offers all onboard facilities for comfortably cruising at its best. Hoek Design did an extensive research project, which showed that the hull lines of Topaz (J8) were very fast. The Topaz design had the lowest wet surface of all tested models and the highest keel aspect ratio of all J Class boats. After the research project, Topaz’s design was optimized to make her suitable for racing under the J Class Association handicap system. The mast position, stability, sail area and hull stiffness were also extensively researched and improved.

The aluminium hull was manufactured by Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw, who had built hulls for other J Class boats ( Lionheart and Rainbow ) as well. Special systems were integrated in the initial phase of construction and both weight and volume had to be kept to a minimum. In addition, Topaz is equipped with a hybrid drive system: one of the most advanced systems built to date. Her deck systems were designed for maximum efficiency, while also allowing Topaz to race with a smaller crew.

Topaz is one of the most beautiful sailing yachts that you have ever seen. But don’t let that fool you: above all, she’s a true racer, packed with engineering ingenuity to deliver the best possible racing performance.

The design has a double cockpit and double deckhouse layout, with the helm position in the middle of the boat, just in front of the aft deckhouse. During racing, the aft cockpit is the runner cockpit, the center cockpit serves as sail storage and the helm is located in the middle of the boat, between the aft deck house and the main cockpit. The primary and mainsheet winches are located close to the helmsman, providing short communication lines and facilitating trimming and steering without the use of headsets.

Completely in line with the spirit of the time in which the J Class sailing yachts were originally built, Topaz also features an Art Deco interior (designed by Hoek Design Naval Architects & Rhoades Young Design).

Topaz’s layout has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to eight sleeping guests in four cabins, including a master cabin and two twin cabins. She is also able to accommodate up to seven crew members on board to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience for her guests.

Topaz features a displacement aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules, and is MCA compliant.

New J Class yacht named Topaz is launched – and the design team says she is “absolutely stunning”

  • Elaine Bunting
  • June 18, 2015

A new J Class yacht from a design by Frank Paine in 1935, J8, named Topaz has been launched in the Netherlands and joins a growing fleet of highly competitive Js

Topaz, J8, a Frank Paine design breathed on by Hoek Design

The latest J Class yacht, named Topaz, was launched from Holland Jachtbouw in June, bringing the total number of Js on the water to eight. From an unbuilt 1935 design by Frank Paine, designer of Yankee, J8 was researched and updated to the new rule by Andre Hoek. She is one of the longer ‘super Js’, with an 88ft original waterline length, a foot longer than any other J ever designed.

According to Hoek, the design ‘has the lowest wetted surface and highest keel aspect ratio of all Js. The design was then extensively optimised to perform under the J Class Association handicap system. Mast position, stability, sail area and hull stiffness were extensively researched. The hull structure was designed and augmented to take very high runner loads in order to reduce head stay sag.’

The design has a double cockpit, double deckhouse layout with the helm station amidships just forward of the aft deckhouse.

After sea trials, the new yacht will be handed over in July.

Hoek says the yacht and the quality of the build is “absolutely stunning”.

“The yard has done so much on the details, inside and outside. The 1930s interior will really wow people. It is macassar [ebony] in high gloss, with leather panels on the wall with stainless steel rims in between and straight-cut walnut floors. It looks really amazing.”

The launch of Topaz brings the J Class fleet on the water to eight boats.

Plans for J9 have also been developed by Hoek Design are ready to build from, and the hull of J11, a Swedish design named Svea, has been built at Claasen Shipyards in the Netherlands and there are discussions with several prospective owners.

Interest in the Js is at a high point because the Js will have a showcase regatta as part of the America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017. The class boasts the only level-pegging boat-on-boat superyacht racing.

Topaz is derived from an original Frank C Paine design and was launched in June 2015. Paine is known as the designer of JH3 Yankee which was ultimately beaten in the defender trials by the mighty Ranger by one single second, but went on to twice defeat Ranger in subsequent races.

After extensive research and testing, Hoek Design drew the lines for Topaz from an unbuilt 1935 Paine boat which was designed to take on the Super Js using the maximum waterline length at 88ft, one foot longer than any other J of the time. Paine’s design preference, under the rule, was to accept slightly less sail area in order to maximise waterline length.

On Topaz, Hoek aligned this with a high aspect – narrower and deeper – keel and low wetted surface area. This produced a hull which is fast in light airs and downwind.

Mast position, stability and sail areas were optimised to the J Class Association handicap system and the hull structure designed to accept maximum running backstay loads. Topaz is unique among the modern replica Js having a low bulwark around the deck edge which adds extra stiffness. And Topaz, Lionheart and Svea are all built with longitudinal framing which maximises fore and aft stiffness.

Besides being azure blue underwater, Topaz is recognisable in having a double cockpit, double deckhouse layout. The helm position is in front of the aft deckhouse and behind the main cockpit. This means all the key positions are relatively close to each other, and the primary winches as well as the mainsheet winches are close to the helm.

Topaz’s core crew have been together pretty much since the boat was launched. America’s Cup winner and Olympic silver medallist Peter Holmberg steers Topaz with Nacho Postigo as navigator and Italian Louis Vuitton Cup winner Francesco de Angelis is tactician . Germany’s renowned round the world and America’s Cup sailor Timmy Kroger is project manager.

The design of the hull lines of J8 was originally from the legendary boards of Frank C. Paine. Paine is famous for his 1930 J-class yacht Yankee that was modified and updated in 1934 and the only J that could compete against the considerably longer waterline Super Js'. The lines plan shows that Paine designed J8 with an 88 ft original waterline length, a foot longer than any other J ever designed. He intended to accept a penalty on sail area for waterline length, which was quite radical in those days. The handicap system that is used nowadays is totally different but history has proven that waterline length is crucial in these designs. The hull lines of J8 proved to be very fast in an extensive research project that our office undertook. All Js from the past that could possibly be built today were examined with a specifically developed Velocity Prediction Program for yachts with long keels and long overhangs. The five designs identified as best in this research were also analysed with Computational Fluid Dynamics software. The lines of J8 came out as one of the three best performing lines, very fast in light airs and downwind in all conditions. This design has the lowest wetted surface and highest keel aspect ratio of all Js. The design was then extensively optimised to perform under the J-class Association handicap system. Mast position, stability, sail area and hull stiffness were extensively researched. The hull structure was designed and augmented to take very high runner loads in order to reduce head stay sag. The design has a double cockpit, double deckhouse layout with the helm station amidships just in front of the aft deckhouse. During racing the aft cockpit is the runner cockpit, the mid cockpit the sail storage and helm position is amidships in-between the aft deckhouse and main cockpit. The primary winches, and the mainsheet winches are close to the helmsman: this creates short communication lines and facilitates trimming and helming without the use of headsets. This concept has already proved to be very efficient on the J-class Lionheart, also from our boards. In cruising condition the aft cockpit is for the owners and directly connected to the master deckhouse and cabin, creating privacy. The 'art deco' interior is also designed by our office, a styling concept that fits the time period of the Js very well and will be unique in look and feel. The hull of J8 was built at Bloemsma Alumiuniumbouw, already responsible for two other aluminium Js (Lionheart and Rainbow). The yacht is finished by Holland Jachtbouw to a very high quality standard and launched in 2015 and has a similar hybrid propulsion installation to Rainbow. The yacht will benefit from the experience of Hoek Design and HJB with the J construction projects.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Is a Regatta of Heart-Stopping Challenges

In Bomb Alley, the winds can change in an instant. And then there are the rocks.

sailing yacht topaz

By David Schmidt

Sailors call it Bomb Alley for good reason.

This notorious, roughly 15-mile stretch of water separates northeast Sardinia from the Maddalena archipelago and is an important feature of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which will be held Sept. 5-11. During the strong northwesterly winds that blow from southern France across the northern Mediterranean Sea, this narrow passage has a reputation for unpredictability.

“You can be sailing in five knots, round a corner, and it’s blowing 25 knots,” said Jonathan McKee, a two-time Olympic medalist and a Maxi Cup veteran.

Those lively conditions are caused by the Venturi Effect, in which winds moving through constrained passages increase in velocity and decrease in pressure.

But that is just one of the problems that these huge yachts, with their deep drafts, face. Along with Bomb Alley, there are the rocks.

“The rocks are the nightmare,” said Andrea Caracci, an aeronautical engineer and a highly experienced sailor who is navigating the 100-foot ARCA sgr in the regatta. “It’s a fast boat — we can sail at 12 or 13 knots upwind and 20 knots downwind, so there’s little time to avoid damage.”

McKee called the rocks unnerving: “Because the water is so clear, you can actually see the rocks beneath the keel.”

These obstacles are compounded by the giant boats, which are what the race attracts; hence the name maxi. The regatta, which will be hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, is open to yachts 60 feet or longer, with the largest contenders sometimes exceeding 200 feet. This year’s largest competitor is the J Class yacht Topaz, which measures just over 140 feet.

Topaz requires more that 15 feet of draft, or underwater clearance, from the waterline to the bottom of the keel, while other boats, such as the Rambler 88 and the 100-foot Comanche , require 23 feet of water. The boat Caracci requires just over 20 feet.

The regatta features two types of racing: shorter maneuver-intensive races around inflatable markers, which typically take place off Porto Cervo, and the coastal races in which the boats predominantly use the area’s northern islands as natural turning marks. This year, the regatta’s biggest boats and the smaller maxi classes will contest a maximum of five of these competitions while the smaller classes will contest five coastal races or a mix that includes four coastal races and two of the shorter ones.

While all crews need to be sharp for the maneuver-intensive windward-leeward racing, navigators, in particular, need to know exactly where the rocks are on the coastal courses. They will be threading multimillion-dollar needles that weigh tens of thousands of pounds, and that are sometimes traveling at over 20 knots, through rock gardens that might grant only a few feet of keel clearance. Provided, of course, that the navigator perfectly positions the boat relative to the rocks.

While Caracci said that the rocks near the Isolotto Monaci Lighthouse were well known, others were more elusive.

For high-level teams, often with the biggest boats, the deepest keels and the biggest budgets, one tactic involves taking preregatta water-depth measurements at critical turns, adding yacht-specific information to their charts, and sometimes even donning scuba equipment to take a closer look.

“Some of the navigators check the rocks and measure their position and depths,” Caracci said. “The charts say the rocks are in one place, but we check anyway. The risk is too high — there could be big damage to the boat.”

Stu Bannatyne, a four-time winner of the Ocean Race and a Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup veteran, said it was challenging navigation.

“There are gains to be made by cutting between rocks where the charts say you can’t sail,” he said. “Many boats have run aground.”

Caracci has seen this happen on these waters. Twice. “Once was dramatic,” he said. “The boat was 100 meters in front of us, and its keel was one meter deeper than ours. It hit rocks that the charts said shouldn’t be there.”

Navigators also have access to information from their boat’s networked navigation instruments, including water depth, wind speed and direction, compass, and — critically — GPS. “Some [GPS] antennas can show you what the accuracy of the information is,” Caracci said. “There can be a differential based on the number of tracked satellites. If you’ve only got a precision of one meter, you need to stay away from the rocks.”

Another consideration is that the boat’s draft and leeway requirements can change depending on its underwater appendages. Maxi yachts commonly have heavy, torpedolike keel bulbs that are hung from skinny struts to keep the boat from capsizing. On some boats, these keels can be swung from side to side using hydraulic rams to keep the boat sailing flat and fast.

“Sometimes the maximum risk is when you’re heeled over with a canting keel that’s out to the side, so you need to make a calculation,” Caracci said about deciding when it is safe to sail over the rocks.

“When you’re heeled over, the boat might only draw four meters, but you might pass over water that’s only six meters deep. I really hate that.”

Another challenge for navigators, Caracci said, involves working closely with the boat’s senior crew members to make the best decisions. “The tactician always pushes, so the navigator needs to manage their aggressive approach,” he said, adding that racing over dense and sometimes unmarked hazards requires accepting risks that could give a boat an advantage.

While the regatta’s shorter races require rapid and highly choreographed maneuvers, the coastal races — for which the regatta’s organizers have more than 50 courses to choose from, depending on the wind’s strength and direction — are the most complex.

“This is definitely one of the events where local knowledge is tremendously important,” said Peter Holmberg , an Olympic silver medalist and the helmsman of Topaz at this regatta . “Although conditions change every day, there are definitely characteristics that are consistent and reward previous experience.

“Since you’re rounding islands and rocks, and not an anchored buoy in open water, one’s local knowledge and level of risk-taking determines how close they can round that mark and shave valuable distance with an inside track,” he said.

The complexities can be further compounded by the winds. In early September, racers can usually expect either 10- to 15-knot winds, or the stiffer northwesterly breezes — called the mistral winds — which typically hit 18 to 25 knots.

Winning, of course, requires actually finishing the regatta without a race-ending mistake.

“In mistral conditions, getting around the track isn’t trivial,” McKee said, pointing to the necessity of proper seamanship and tightly choreographed crew work, especially in Bomb Alley. “You can go for hours and, at the finish, only have 10 seconds separating the first and second boat. It comes down to the precision of the navigator’s routing.”

An earlier version of this article misstated how heavy the racing yachts are. They weigh tens of thousands of pounds, not tens of thousands of tons.

Topaz in currently in Camden Harbor.  The current owners have been cruising her for 19 years and have come to the difficult decision to put her up for sale.  Having just recently raced her for the first time ever in the Camden Classics Cup, they were reminded how great of a sailing boat Topaz is and how easy it is to sail.

The center cockpit deck allows for aft and fore state rooms making her a very appealing sailboat for cruisers who regularly have guests.  The classic Robert Perry design built at the well regarded Ta Shing Yacht Building Co. is known for a safe and comfortable blue water sailor, as well as an easy and functional cruiser.

Specifications

  • displacement 28,000lbs
  • fuel capacity 2 X 80 gallons
  • water capacity 2 x 120 gallons
  • type Centercockpit
  • designed by Robert Perry
  • builder Ta Shing Yacht Builder
  • model Norseman 447
  • hull material Fiberglass
  • location Camden, Maine
  • boat engine Lehman Power 4D61
  • horsepower 61 HP

Construction

Norseman 447 hulls are single piece layups built in a female mold.  The monolithic form provides the greatest strength and integrity.  Orthophthalic resins are used throughout.  Knytex cloth is used in the outer layer of layup followed by alternating layers of mat and roving. The hull is cored with Airex foam followed by the inner laminate identical to the outer laminate.

The deck is composed of a single piece layup.  All hatches, portholes and windows are built into the mold.  The outer skin is composed of  a layer of orthophthalic polyester gelcoat, backed with alternate layers of fiberglass and mat in a matrix of orthophthalic polyester resin to an average thickness of 5/16″. Bonded to the out skin is a layer of end grain balsa core, averaging 3/4″ thickness.  The inner skin is built up in the same manner as the outer skin, using othophthalic polyester resin, without the use of any gelcoat layer.  It maintains an average thickness of 1/4′

Hull to Deck Joint:

The hull to deck joint is bonded with 3M 5200 as bedding and fastened with 1/4″- 20 bolts every few inches.  The teak toe rail is thrubolted adding additional mechanical fastening.

The teak decks are not structural.  They are glued and fastened to the outer fiberglass layer.  Two-part polysulfide compounds are used as the bedding between planks.

Bulkheads are constructed of marine plywood laminated into place by layers of mat and glass to provide structural rigidity and strength.  Where bulkheads meet the hull and deck a layer of Airex foam is laid in to prevent print thru of the bulkhead and to allow for some compression.  Mares tales fiberglass rope strands add extra strength in the layup of these joints

Chain plates:

Where chain plates pass through the deck, the Airex foam core has been eliminated.  A hole is cut through the deck which has slightly larger cross section that the chain plate.  This space is filled with 3M 5200 after insertion of the chain plate. On deck, a cover plate is screwed down to the deck, spreading the bedding compound for a good watertight bond.

Inside the boat, large anchoring ribs are laminated to the hull and deck in the same manner as the bulkhead.  The chain plates are attached to these ribs by thru-bolting 1/2″ stainless steel bolts through the chain plate and rib with large stainless steel backing plates opposite the chain plate and rib.  All chain plates are bonded to prevent electrolysis and provide some lightning protection.

Topaz has an Awlgrip blue paint job with a double red boot strip and a wide upper red cove stripe with a smaller gold cover strip underneath.  The transom is fitted with two opening ports, while port and starboard have three opening ports each.

There are three scuppers on port and starboard mid ship. At the bow, stern and mid ship there are port and starboard chalks built in to the rail with accompanying cast aluminum cleats.

The bow has a double anchor roller mounted with an electric windlass

Additionally, the deck is fitted with two deck prisms on port and two on starboard.

The Vibe offers a great introduction to performance sailing. It is designed as a hiking performance double hander but can also be sailed with a single trapeze. The Mylar mainsail area can be reduced by up to 20% using the innovative zip reefing system, meaning that the boat can be altered to suit virtual novices, club racers and even set up as a singlehander.

The Vibe is a great choice for schools providing two person race tuition. The beamy hull inspires great confidence in young, lightweight or inexperienced sailors. And the chine in the hull provides even greater stability meaning that the Vibe stays sailing, no matter who is at the helm, when many of its competitors would capsize. It is a versatile boat that is fast and fun, but very stable and easy to manage.

The huge, spacious cockpit with its gnav kicker offers roomy and comfortable sailing for two adults. There’s plenty of room at the back of the cockpit for an adult helm and enough gunwale space for a crew to enjoy life on the wire. The Vibe is also lightweight, making it easy to launch for adults or children and can be easily rigged using the hinged mast foot.

A more powerful Vibe X rig is also available. The VIBE X utilises the same hull as the original Vibe which has proven to be exceptionally stable, light and compact – with the addition of a larger and more powerful rig. The extra power which allows the boat to plane even earlier and sail even faster is ideal for lighter wind conditions, heavier sailors or to challenge crews as they grow in confidence.

The larger rig results in a 20 per cent increase in sail area, with the taller mast fitted with lowers, shrouds and spreaders for greater control of mast bend and compression. This makes it easier to depower the mainsail upwind, with enough support for a lighter crew to trapeze without distorting the rig, plus a longer pole to fly a considerably larger asymmetric spinnaker.
