“I’d been intrigued by solo or short-handed sailing since the early days of the BOC Challenge (Around Alone 5 Oceans) and was blown away by the wide beam Finot-Conq designs that began to push the parameters of form stability with incredibly wide beams,” recalls  Nick Moloney, as he nominates his favourite Open 50.

“In the build up to our 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race, we were constructing our yacht Toshiba in Newport, which is also where the Open 50 Cray Valley was also coming to life for Jean-Pierre (JP) Mouligne and his campaign towards the 1998 Around Alone Race. I snuck away from the sail loft the day that Cray Valley first went in the water and watched  from a distance. I remember saying to myself ‘I’d give anything to sail that beautiful boat’.

“Roll forward to 2002, and Offshore Challenges entered two boats in the Route du Rhum . Ellen MacArthur would race her beloved Kingfisher Open 60 and Mark Turner sourced an Open 50 for my campaign. I could not believe it when Mark revealed to me what my boat would be. I immediately knew that something special would come of this relationship.

“Both Ellen and I won our respective divisions in style, in a storm-torn event that also saw me set a new course record on the Open 50, then called Ashfield Healthcare . My memories of sailing solo on this boat, at speeds in excess of 20 knots are some that I will never forget.

The spectacular open 50 hull, designed by Finot-Conq in 1998 for the solo round the world, has been one of the most successful mono hulls since. The famous ocean racer N. Malony nominated the Open 50 as the worlds coolest yacht in 2022. The hull and deck of Adrenaline were built in the US and shipped to Germany where G. Nissen designed the comfortable interior for a very fast racer/regatta cruiser. She can still do an average of 14kts and top over 20 kts with her fast hull. Fitted with NMAE 2000 full data system and B&G H3000 navigation equipment and a lifting keel for downwind speed.

The Krogen 50 Welcomes You Home

  • Retractable panel between saloon and pilothouse
  • Amidships master stateroom
  • Three-stateroom layout available
  • Single or twin engines available
  • Island friendly shallow draft
  • Ocean-crossing range
  • Stand-up engine room

The Krogen 50 Open perfectly represents our company philosophy and dedicated focus. First it meets the first objective of delivering a comfortable and efficient long-range cruising yacht on our proven Pure Full Displacement hull form. Then it wipes the slate clean with a refreshing interior layout and use of space. The Open series draws inspiration from open-plan architecture. The pilothouse, galley, and saloon form one seamless space on the main deck, with a layout that invites entertainment and casual living on board. The main-deck interior is what sets the 50’ Open apart: The galley is located between the light-filled saloon and the pilothouse. Fit for a gourmet chef, the space is complete with a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, Viking range, abundant storage, and 16 linear feet of counter space.

The Krogen 50 Open is available with either an amidships master or an optional master-forward design. The amidships master arrangement has a retreat-like master stateroom that features an island queen berth, and an ensuite head with his-and-hers sinks, and a large walk-in shower. A spacious VIP cabin is situated forward and includes a deluxe queen berth and private head. A full-size washer and dryer and linen closet are conveniently located between the staterooms.

Krogen 50 Open Design & Engineering

A walk-in, stand-up engine room with an incredible six and a half feet of headroom houses either single or twin John Deer diesels and the industry’s finest systems and equipment. When experienced cruisers explore a Kadey-Krogen engine room, it’s often what they don’t see that makes as significant of an impression as what they do see. For one, we do not overload our designs with untried and unreliable equipment. To us, reliability and safety far outweigh experimenting with some new unproven piece of technology. Then everything is laid out for accessibility and ease of maintenance. If you’re able to machinery, chances are it will be better maintained.

The Krogen 50 Open benefits from the same attention to weight distribution and utilization on reducing weight while maximizing strength. Hull construction includes use of American-made, Cook gelcoat. Hand-laid Knytex fiberglass construction with Corecell closed-cell PVC sandwich core is utilized in the topsides. Below the waterline you’ll find solid fiberglass with blister-resistant vinylester resin utilized on the first two laminates, with aramid fiber/FRP reinforcements.

  • 1,240 gal. fuel capacity (single engine)
  • 1 x 230-bhp John Deere diesel
  • Twin John Deere diesels are optional
  • Hinged radar arch
  • 4,000-watt inverter
  • Wing-stations with engine and thruster controls
  • Proven Kadey-Krogen Pure Displacement Hull design

Fuel Polishing System

Not too many people would argue with the premise that clean, uncontaminated, water-free fuel is the key ingredient to a long-distance cruiser like the Krogen 50 Open. If not, all those contaminates can ultimately make their way into the secondary and primary fuel filters and starve the engine. This is why Kadey-Krogen employs fuel-polishing systems to clean the fuel before it hits the engines. Whether you are bunkering in Puerto Monte, Chile, or Newport, Rhode Island, this solution is a key component to any bluewater cruiser.

Platform for Adventure

Don’t under estimate the value of a large tender for your cruising adventures. Whether it’s being used to load on provisions, or taking the family on an underwater excursion, you’ll appreciate as large of a tender as possible. Kadey Krogen recognizes this simple truth and ensures the 50 Open is equipped with the proper davit and space for the optimal tender solution.

Inside the Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: August 3, 2018

open 50 yacht

With all due respect to the world’s great boat shows large and small, the Palm Beach International Boat Show is currently my favorite. It’s manageably sized, is stress-free to get around and has easy access to good restaurants. But attending is always a bittersweet affair for me because Palm Beach heralds the end of boat-show season. However this year, as the show wound down, there was light at the end of the tunnel. It took the form of the Kadey-Krogen 50 Open. Kadey-Krogen vice president and partner Larry Polster invited me to help him deliver the 50 from West Palm Beach to Stuart, Florida, after the show. I’d first gotten aboard at the Miami International Boat Show a month earlier, and based on what I’d seen, my answer was an enthusiastic yes. The yacht’s open, uncluttered main deck puts the helm, salon and galley all on one level — as opposed to the more traditional pilothouse design seen on most trawlers . “It’s the only boat in this class I know of with an open layout like this,” Polster said with a hint of pride (that particular boat belonged to him).

kadey krogen 50 open

Seating is aft, adjacent to the cockpit, with an L-shaped settee to port and more seating to starboard. Forward is a galley with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, sized to hold enough food during the long voyages for which this boat is designed. There’s a four-burner Wolf range, stowage for dry goods and an optional dishwasher — a choice I’d wager will be popular. Who wants to scrub dishes aboard a beautiful boat in a scenic location?

The interior’s seating area and galley have four windows on each side for natural light. They help give the captain near-360-degree views from the helm, which is up one step with a Llebroc helm chair, a 29-inch-wide cherry wheel and the owner’s choice of electronics. Polster opted for twin 22-inch Garmin screens, as well as an ABT-Trac stabilizer joystick. He likes that stabilizing system for a yacht that, at half-load, displaces 68,000 pounds.

An L-shaped settee with a foldout table is to port for keeping the captain company, and a watertight door to starboard accesses a Portuguese bridge with wing stations on both sides for docking. Polster’s wing stations also have Garmin screens, ZF controls and access to the stabilizer system.

kadey krogen 50 open

From there, the 25-inch-wide side decks lead aft to the cockpit, and the Portuguese bridge has a door that leads to the yacht’s foredeck, which is girded by beefy 2-inch-wide bow rails. The bow has a Maxwell 2500 stainless-steel windlass and a settee for two to optimize time on the hook.

Once I had a good working knowledge of the yacht, Polster and I pulled lines and made for the inlet. We poked along the Intracoastal Waterway at a steady 1,800 rpm and 8 knots. At that speed, the 50 has a range of 2,100 nautical miles — leggy enough to get us from West Palm Beach all the way up to about Halifax, Nova Scotia, on one tank of fuel, had we desired.

Once we got outside protected waters, the boat performed admirably in the rolling and confused 3s and 4s. The hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provided a gentle landing into the troughs of even the largest swells we came across, perhaps the odd 5-footer. A pod of dolphins lazed in our wake a good way up the coast, enjoying the free ride on a perfectly fine South Florida day.

kadey krogen 50 open

We entered the Port St. Lucie Inlet in a rousing following sea, conditions Polster likes. He wanted me to see how the boat performed on what he dubbed “the magic carpet ride,” and after experiencing it, I can see why. The 50 Open surfed cleanly and surely down the faces of the swells, with nothing but a straight white line of bubbles trailing behind.

As the marina in Stuart came into view, I couldn’t help but be a little bummed out that I was down to the last dreg of my boat-show season. But then again, with a day at sea under blues skies, aboard a vessel that’s well laid out and smooth riding, it was hard to stay down for long.

Here’s looking forward to next year.

Master and Commander

This yacht was designed for long stays aboard. Kadey-Krogen Vice President Larry Polster and his wife, Janet, left on an extended trip to the Bahamas after our sea trial. They needed comfortable accommodations, as well as a place for Polster to get some work done. The master has two hanging lockers and 12 (count ’em) cabinets and drawers for stowing clothes and other necessities. There’s also access from the master stateroom to the engine room for owners like Polster, who is hands-on when it comes to machinery maintenance. Forward of the master stateroom is an office for those days when you have to work.

Meet the Owner

Larry Polster is a partner and vice president at Kadey-Krogen Yachts, where he has worked in various capacities since volunteering to help the company at a 2002 Annapolis boat show. Polster was born and raised in Cleveland and grew up boating on the Great Lakes. By age 12 he was experienced enough to run the family’s 36-foot Pacemaker from Kingston, Ontario, to Rochester, New York, when his parents fell ill with mal de mer. After earning a degree at Carnegie Mellon University, Polster worked in consulting for 17 years before opening Kadey-Krogen’s Annapolis office shortly after that Annapolis show.

Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open

Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open

What’s the best way to arrive to Trawlerfest in Bremerton, Washington? On a trawler, of course! When invited by the new owners of a Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open, the company’s newest build, I leapt at the chance for a functional sea trial and private ferry to Bremerton. What’s that saying about two birds and one stone?

First, some context for the uninitiated. Kadey-Krogen as an American yacht brand is about as established as it gets, although they’ve been building them in Taiwan (like just about everyone else in the industry) since 1977. When describing a Kadey-Krogen, the terms “traditional” and “classic” are often used for good reason. These motor trawlers have clear aesthetic inspiration from the fishing boats of the North Sea, with slightly curved lines, pronounced bow, high freeboard, and generally salty air. However, a Kadey-Krogen is a luxury yacht first, with a large salon, generous accommodations, and machinery made to keep up a 7- to 9-knot cruising speed for as long as possible. These are popular for liveaboard, long-distance cruising for a reason.

Flash forward to 2018, and the 50’ Open exterior looks very much like her forebearers. In this era of storied brand names throwing aside their signature looks in favor of completely encasing their new builds with glass windows, slapping on a plumb bow just ‘cause, and blowing up the beam for a fifth mini-bar, it’s refreshing to see builders like Kadey-Krogen stick to their guns. The majority of boardings will take place at the swimstep, which is modest but perfectly functional.

There are also two boarding doors port and starboard in the cockpit and port and starboard up forward at a higher level for taller docks. The robust transom opens to provide access to the covered cockpit. This transom means business, a contrast to many other contemporary builders’ moves to open, lazy weekend, semi-covered cockpits with giant swimsteps aft. The Open 50’ is the transom of a proper open water boat.

Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open Interior

The rest of the 50’ Open’s exterior maintains the philosophy of open water consideration, notably the single forward walkway starboard sheltered by fiberglass all the way to the bow where high railings take over the supporting role. The walkway wraps around the wheelhouse to port at the bow, and another robust fiberglass structure serves as both walkway shelter and a forward-facing bench accessible through a pair of beefy doors.

One should feel confidant walking about in even the foulest of weather. Interestingly, the single stairway up to the gigantic flybridge is located inside, another design option that errs on the traditional and safe. Above is a second helm station with lots of seating and a dinghy davit with plenty of space for tender stowage.

There’s also dual wing stations forward on the main level, one port and one starboard. Between all the control angles and the bow and stern thrusters, the fine maneuvering on this yacht may be about as precise as it gets. The owner on this maiden voyage had zero problems navigating the Ballard Locks, despite never having done it before. This fine control was on full display to me as I scribble down my notes and tended the stern line.

However, what’s truly novel about this new Kadey-Krogen is not the exterior, but the interior from which the Open takes its name. The interior is 100 percent luxury modern, fully embracing the popular trend to do away with interior partitions between salon, galley, and helm station. All three exist in the same palatial space inside, the salon (with seating, large table, and deployable flat screen TV) is aft, galley oriented port amidships, and helm station with small table is the furthest forward.

The build we explored featured an American cherry interior that is a great wood to lighten up an enclosed space. One notable feature in the galley is an electrically deployable appliance garage that should keep those toasters and blenders out of sight and safely stowed under the granite countertop.

Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open

Moving down a spiral staircase forward brings a visitor to the accommodations and into the guts of the yacht. The version I saw had a three-stateroom and two-head layout, the star of the show being the increasingly ubiquitous master suite with island-style berth and en suite head. It is down here where one also has access to the engine room.

I was very impressed with the seven feet of standing headroom and ease of access for maintenance, for I have flashbacks of contorting into tiny lazarettes to get to equipment. The model I was on had twin John Deere 4045TFM85 125-bhp diesel engines with 24-V DC electric start. Single and double screw options exist.

As far as performance goes, a typical cruiser will be running at 1,700 rpm on the Open 50’. In our test on a calm day with our two engines and less than 10 knots of wind as a variable, we burned about two gallons of diesel per hour at 1,700 rpm that yielded about 6 to 7 knots. When we opened the throttle up to 2,500 rpm, the fuel burn increased into the 7 to 12 gallons per hour territory at about 10 knots. Clearly, she’s good at what she’s meant to do; put in those long distances at around 1,700 rpm and 6 to 8 knots where she sips the fuel.

Her motion was easy and sea-kindly, handling large wake from passing container ships and the Seattle-Bremerton ferry with fitting grace.

Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open Specs

If you want a proper seaworthy trawler to live comfortably aboard and see the world, the Kadey-Krogen 50’ Open should be on your short list. While the base price is $1,549,000, Kadey-Krogen is a highly custom builder and a typical completed build will cross the $2,000,000 threshold. 1528155833223 -->

Charity hopes to send second food aid ship to Gaza in next few days

Pallets with 50% more supplies than first boat, Open Arms, being loaded in Cyprus

  • Middle East crisis – latest updates

The charity sending food aid to Gaza on a ship travelling across the Mediterranean from Cyprus is loading a second boat with supplies, which it hopes will set off in the coming days.

Pallets containing 300 tonnes of food aid – 50% more than the first shipment – are expected to be screened and loaded by the end of Thursday, but there is no indication yet when it will leave the port of Larnaca.

The supplies include cans of beans, carrots, tuna, chickpeas and corn, plus parboiled rice, flour, oil and salt.

The UN has warned that at least 576,000 people in Gaza – a quarter of the population – are on the brink of famine and global pressure has been growing on Israel to allow more access to the territory.

Janez Lenarčič, the EU’s humanitarian aid and crisis management chief, said on Thursday there were already pockets of famine in Gaza , and warned it could spread to the whole region. He urged Israel to open more road routes to deliver aid.

The first ship, which is towing a barge loaded with 200 tonnes of aid, enough for half a million meals, is expected to arrive on the Gaza coast in the coming days after leaving Larnarca on Tuesday .

World Central Kitchen (WCK), a US-based food aid charity working with the governments of Cyprus and the UAE and the Spanish NGO Open Arms, had an additional 500 tonnes of aid in Cyprus ready to be loaded in what it hoped would be a series of journeys across the Mediterranean, which have been given the name Operation Safeena, meaning boat or vessel in Arabic.

Theodoros Gotsis, spokesperson for Cyprus’s foreign ministry, said the Spanish-flagged aid ship was making “good progress” and was on course for the Gaza coast. It was taking longer than expected to arrive because the boat was by necessity moving very slowly. Tracking apps had “been jammed” because the ship was sailing in seas off a war zone where communication was patchy, he said.

It was still uncertain on Thursday how the aid would be unloaded and distributed once it reached the Gaza coastline. WCK volunteers and others in Gaza are building a jetty from the rubble of buildings destroyed in Israeli bombing during the past five months.

A composite of Maxar Technologies’ satellite images created on 14 March showing the construction of a jetty on a beach in Gaza between 11 and 13 March.

Gaza was the “most politically complex environment WCK has operated in”, its founder, the Michelin-starred chef José Andrés, said on the charity’s website at the weekend. A spokesperson said on Thursday that plans for docking and distribution were being continually adapted.

Gaza health ministry officials, meanwhile, said six people had been killed and dozens wounded when the Israeli military opened fire as crowds waited for aid trucks in Gaza City on Wednesday evening. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident.

It is the latest in a series of chaotic scenes and deadly incidents at aid distributions as desperately hungry people scramble for food. More than 100 people were killed last month as they waited for an aid delivery near Gaza City. Palestinian health authorities said Israeli forces shot them, while Israel said the victims had been trampled or run over.

Aid agencies in recent days have sought to vary routes for convoys to avoid large numbers of people gathering and potentially stopping convoys. “The problem is there are very few routes to take, and all are very difficult to travel on. There have been tanks driving up and down them for months and they are basically just strips of rubble now. So people can predict where the trucks are going to be,” said an NGO official in Gaza, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The White House called for a swift investigation into an Israeli airstrike this week on a UN food distribution facility in Gaza.

Israel said the strike had killed a Hamas commander whom it targeted, and Palestinian health officials said it had killed four more people, including a UN worker.

On Wednesday, R Adm Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for the Israeli military, said Israel would try to “flood” the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid from multiple entry points.

More convoys would follow six aid trucks with supplies from the World Food Programme that entered the northern part of the Gaza Strip this week through a crossing in the security fence known as the 96th gate. There would also be deliveries from other entry points, complemented by airdrops and seaborne aid cargoes, Hagari said.

Hamas was reported by local media to have killed the head of a powerful family in the territory for stealing aid and having contact with Israel. There was no immediate confirmation of the claim, but earlier this week Hamas threatened to execute “collaborators”. Tensions in Israel and the occupied territories remain high ahead of the first Friday prayers of Ramadan. Hamas has called for a “day of escalation”, and thousands of police have been deployed around Jerusalem’s Old City.

On Thursday, Netanyahu met families of hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza and said he had little positive news. The Israeli prime minister said there had been no “real response” to terms offered for a ceasefire earlier this month.

“They are still clinging to unacceptable demands ... They do not want to make progress. They want to ignite the ground during Ramadan. This is their attempt; this is their goal,” he said.
