Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

what is an O'Day 14?

  • Thread starter Mike
  • Start date Mar 26, 2004

  • Day Sailers

Traded in the Finn (getting old, have kid, yeah I know..) a friend of mine told me I could have his O'Day 14. I figured it was a O'day 15 or a javelin that he called an 'O'day 14' but when I got it, it sure isn't a Javelin or O'day 15. The sail has the blue 'O' with a 14 on it, the hull number makes it even more confusing, STRSP131K687 which makes it a starcraft!!! The side is clearly marked with the O'day logo. WHat is it? And even worse any Idea on how to get parts or a portsmouth rating (yeah, dont remind me that I traded in the Finn when you tell me the rating). Mike (confused in Long Beach)

What kind of boat? Do you have a picture of the boat that you could post? Oday had several small boats available at the time this one was built, some built by other makers.

need to take a picture I need to take a picture, but I think it might be a knock off or continuation of a Holder 14, looks alot like it, has a daggerboard, pretty flat bottom, and a 'storage box' in front just like a holder. The jib is free to move from side to side (no jib cleats like the holder). Mike

14 = Widgit (Widgeon) Mike It may be A Widgen by O'Day

Rodney Johnson

Not a Widgeon The Widgeon was only 12' 4" long. The Sail would have had a "W" inside the "O" and not a number. I thought is was a replacement sail, and the sailmaker figured this Javelin was a 14' O'Day and so put a "14" inside the "O", but the HIN that you give is not a Javelin. STRSP131K687 would be an "O'Day", maybe! STR = Starcraft, in the mid-1980's O'Day was a division of "Starcraft Sailboats" a division of Lear Siegler Marine. SP = ? Javelin would be "B", Widgeon "A", 15 "V" ("S" = O'Day 30, "P" = O'Day 20)? 131 would be the Class# or how many of that class had been built so far K6 = boat was "certified" or introduced in November 1986 87 = model year of boat You mentioned that the boat has a daggerboard, not a pivoting centerboard, the O'Day 15 (1981-84) had that but the 15 was not built in 1987. There were a lot more than 131 of the O'Day 15 built. Except for the Hull I.D. mentioned, I thought perhaps this was a Catalina Capri 14.2 (also known as an "OMEGA 14" but that has a pivoting CB, not a daggerboard. As others have said, a picture may be worth a thousand words!

O'Day firefly??? COuld it be a firefly?? I just read a book about the history of fiberglass boats and their makers. There was a section on George O"Day and the boats he designed and made. One of them was a 14' sailboat called a firefly. Could this be one?? Mike C. O'28 unnamed

Not an "O'DAY" Despite the evidence, this is not an "O'DAY" per-se.....I think it may be a HOLDER 14 that has been disguised as an O'Day. The stripe design is O'DAY, even says "O'Day", there may be an "O" on the sail....but this is not a real "O'DAY". It may have been a sort-of prototype or one-off, or perhaps she was owned by an O'Day employee (or Dealer?) who decided to have some fun by customizing their own (non-O'Day) boat? The HIN is a bit confusing, since it does not follow the normal O'Day format, but that could have been explained by the fact that O'Day was in tranition between owners at the time the boat was built. Anyway, she look more like a HOLDER 14 than any O'Day. O'Day never built a model called the "O'DAY 14", there were a couple of 14' O'Day models (Puffin, and Javelin), but no O 14. Perhaps Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine would know something? I may bring these pictures with me the next time that I visit him.

A collectors item? the mystery gets deeper and deeper. Now im thinking it is a collectors item, worth millions on e-bay.... On the other hand, a Holder in O'day clothing isn't too bad either. I sent some pictures to Rudy, I have not heard back from him yet, his respose was the same as most people, 'O'day never made a 14'. Next part of the story.... I sent the story to the Holder/ Hobie One users group, they told me it is close but not a holder either. Here is what the Holder/Hobie One told me. (BTW, it int any of the boats they suggested it could be either) O'Day seems to have a boat typical of the 14' design of the '70's and '80's. I've seen several boats that look similar to the Holder design. The O'Day appears to be closer than most. I venture to guess most boat builders "borrow" from one another's good ideas and popular styling. The basic hull design for them all strikes me as that of the dory dating back to the whaling days and beyond. Some similar 14' sailboats: Wayfarer [This one came along in the 1950's and may have influenced all the rest] http://www.angelfire.com/de2/WIT/index.html Lido 14 http://www.santanasailboats.com/boats/lido14/lido14.htm American 14.6 http://sailingsource.com/americansail/american14.php Catalina - Capri 14.2 http://capri14.org/ CL 14 http://www.vaxxine.com/clsailboats/cl14.htm W.D. Schock - Capri 14 http://www.santanasailboats.com/boats/capri14/capri.htm CHRYSLER DABBER 14 Glen-L 14 http://www.glen-l.com/designs/sailboat/gl14.html

None of the above? Not a Wayfarer, that boat has a pivoting centerboard and double chine hull, ditto for the CL 14. Not a CAPRI 14.2 or CAPRI 14 (really the same boat, different builders (CAPRI 14 might have a keel anyway) they had soft chines and a pivoting centerboard (must admit..until I looked closely at your pics, these were my guesses!). Not a Chrysler Dagger (I assume that was what you meant?) the Dagger was more like a Laser. Not a LIDO 14, the Lido is sort-of a lower freeboard competitor to the Capri, again..soft chines and a pivoting CB. Not a Glen-L 14, that was a plywood boat. I still think you have a Holder 14 disguised as an O'Day. I do seem to recall that there may be another 14' sailboat that was a near copy of the Holder 14, perhaps I'm dreaming...but I'll see if I can find any info in my home "library". Whatever, but the boat is not an O'DAY. Oh, Rudy takes a while to answer e-mail sent to him.

Gale Force (Rinker?) 16

  • Add to quote

Total n00b here with one season of sailing under my belt. Absolutely LOVE it. Obsessed really. Just moved to a new area with a nice (Virginia) State Park reservoir nearby. I have been casually looking for a small-ish day sailer/project boat that I can take out evenings and weekends. Maybe take a friend, furry or not along. Something in the 15-16 foot range. I am 6'4" and pushing 300 lbs so a sunfish or something really small just isn't an option. Perusing Craigslist this afternoon I found a "Gale Force 16" with trailer for $500. I have searched and searched and other than finding some references to "Rinker" I have been able to find NOTHING out about this boat! It is an almost 5 hour drive away, but very near my in-laws, so any trip wouldn't be a total waste. Is it even worth the gas to go look? The guy who owns it kind of inherited it, and isn't really interested in keeping it. He has sailed it 3 times and says everything seems to work fine. Whadda ya think? Thanks! Jim McDonel

omega 14 sailboat

That is a very long trip just to look at a boat. Where do you live? $500 is a good price for this boat if it is COMPLETE. That is a very important point. Definitely do not get a Sunfish.

Thanks for your reply, krisscross! I live in Western Virginia, but my In-laws live in south-east Ohio about 1/2 an hour from where the boat is. So it wouldn't be too difficult to convince the Admiral that we need to go visit her Mom and Dad, and, oh yeah, can we look at a boat while we are there? Both sails are in fair condition. He has sailed it recently, but it has no paperwork, and he doesn't want to go through the hassle of re-titleing and re-registering what is essentially a "found boat". I think the process in Ohio must be tougher than it is here in Virginia. Does anyone know anything about the boat itself? Is it a good design? Who the heck was Gale Force? Looks like a short manufacturing span in the early to mid-80's then .....nothing. Where did they go? What does Rinker have to do with the process?

omega 14 sailboat

My first boat was a Gale Force 20 by Rinker. Rinker was like a few other power boat companies that got into the sailing game for a bit, but they actually produced a decent little boat. They had a three year run at which time their factory burned to the ground along with all plans and molds and they never produced another sailboat again, although they sill make power boats. There is virtually no information online about them, although I will tell you my 20 was a decent little boat that sailed well. This is from my blog: More about the Gale Force 20, she was built in Syracuse, IN by Rinker Boats. She was another of the power boat companies looking for additional income as their sales plummeted in the early 80's. They built this boat and as far as I can tell a 17 foot version of her for three years until their sailboat factory caught fire and burnt and never produced anymore after that. Also known by the manufactuerer as a Wild Wind, she was a Fractional Sloop rig with a swing keel that drew 2 feet with the keel up and 5.67 feet down, her keel carried 800 pounds of lead which bode well with winds. Her jib measured 102 square feet and her main 69.88. She had a performance rating hull speed of 5.69 knots, not overly fast but certainly accpetable for a first time sailor. Her spartan cabin had a V Berth with two benches and a fold up center table located directly under the companionway hatch. Her forehatch opened allowing for a small amount of air movement through the cabin as a result of her flat deck and fixed ports. Mine was equipped with a Suzuki 4 horse power 2 stroke outboard which more than powered her for the local sailing lake and occassional trips to other lakes in the area. She was an easy to rig sailboat that took approximately an hour to set up to sail from the trailer when pulled.

Thanks Cat Man. That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for! I talked to the current owner, and he says there are two mains, one of which is like new and the other which seems to match the jib, original, but in fair condition.

https://cf.searchtempest.com/go-1.1.html#http://columbus.craigslist.org/boa/4607383097.html If this is the boat, based on what he states it would be worth looking at. A little more about the boat: 1982 Gale Force 16 Lil' Pirate Zodiac-Honda Inflatable Boats The 1982 Gale Force 16 Lil' Pirate sailboat has a fiberglass hull and has an overall length of 15.92 feet (sometimes referred to as LOA). The width (or beam) of this craft is 59 inches. The sail area for the sailboat is 134 square feet. The displacement for the boat is approximately 550 lbs. The draft of this sailboat is approximately 4'2".

Here is a nice little boat (Catalina's Omega 14) that I would recommend to you: Catalina Omega 14 Sailboat | eBay Not sure how far from Roanoke you are, but if you got it for under $500 at the auction I would think it's a better boat then Rinker. Definitely easier to launch and still plenty big for you. There are a lot of boats out there these days and you can afford to be choosy.

Yep, that's the one. He now has a trailer for it...hmmm. I am on call this weekend, but I may run up there next weekend.

Roanoke is about 45 minutes from here. Thanks for the heads up!
