Hunter Boats

The first Hunter boat was built in 1969 and for over half a century the name has been associated with some of Britain's most succesful production cruising and racing boat designs.

The company was founded in 1968 and the first design produced by the new company was the Squib, an open keelboat designed by Oliver Lee in 1967.

David Thomas Joins

In 1975 David Thomas became the main designer producing the iconic Hunter Sonata and Impala 28 Cruiser Racers which to this day continue to offer competive One-Design racing and have their own National Championships.

Racing Yachts

Throughout the 70s the company produced many racing yachts including the Formula 28 and HB 31 designs by Steven Jones. The HB 31 was the first production boat to use kevlar laminates in its hull construction.

Move to Cruisers

By the 80s the company started building cruising yachts with the Hunter Horizon 26 and 32 Models winning the Best Production Boat of the Year and Best Production Cruiser of the Year awards respectively.

Return to Racing

1995 saw the company build the Hunter 707, a highly succesful sportsboat which went on to win the Yacht of the Year awards the following year.

The present

Hunter Boats was bought out in 2003 by the Select Yachts Group and in 2009 Lauren Marine of Southampton purchased the rights, moulds and tooling for the Hunter range of boats including five designs.

The Hunter 19 (Europa) is a British sailboat that was designed by Oliver Lee and first built in 1972. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The design was originally marketed by the manufacturer as the Hunter 19, but is now usually referred to as the Hunter 19 (Europa) to differentiate it from the unrelated American Hunter Marine 1981 Hunter 19-1 and 1993 Hunter 19-2 designs, which were both also sold as the Hunter 19. [1] [4] [5] [6]

  • 1 Production
  • 4 References

The design was built by Hunter Boats Limited in the United Kingdom between 1972 and 1982, but it is now out of production. [1] [2] [4]

The Hunter 19 (Europa) is a development of the Squib , with a cabin added. After 1974 it was known as the Europa 19 or the Hunter Europa. It is a small recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a reverse transom, a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel . It displaces 1,501 lb (681 kg) and carries 750 lb (340 kg) of fixed ballast. [1] [4]

The boat has a draft of 2.99 ft (0.91 m) with the standard fin keel fitted and 2.23 ft (0.68 m) with the optional shoal draft keel. [1] [4]

The boat is optionally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. [1] [4]

The design has a hull speed of 5.56 kn (10.30 km/h). [4] [7]

Hunter 19- good first boat?

I've been gaining some experience crewing with friends and am now looking to buy a boat for myself. I have a rather limited budget and the Hunter 19 seems to be crop up often in my price range. I like the look of it, and the fact that it would be easily trailed. It also seems to suit my needs for day sails and possible overnights if I can drag the girlfriend along! My main concern is that, living in Stornoway, I could be facing potentially quite serious sailing conditions. I certainly don't intend to seek out rough weather by any means, but on the other hand I can't discuont the possibility of being caught out. The Hunter is obviously a very small boat- would I be crazy to leave harbour in one? Thanks! Rob

The Hunter 19, and the marginally more civilised Hunter Europa, same hull different coachroof, are excellent boats. Very seaworthy and surprisingly quick. Obviously limited on accomodation but super wee boats. David Blagden sailed his across the Atlantic.

My wife and I had a Hunter Europa as our first boat. It was very seaworthy and surprisingly quick. We had a triple keeled version which always fell over on its drying mooring but fin keel versions are also out there. Its hull was from a Squib keelboat but with a deck moulding fitted. I would say it is ideal as a first boat although rather cramped inside. If you like more comfort (though not as quick to sail) we have also owned a Newbridge Venturer which are 22ft but much more space including a separate heads. Visit www.newbridge-nava.co ,uk for the owners association website.

In the old church there you can see the best extant depiction of a medieval hebridean galley. Some of these were probably little bigger than 20' or so and were used for 00s of years as the mainstay of the local economy, and primitive compared to what you are considering (open to the sea, poor windward performance, no lifesaving equipment etc. etc.). A boat like a Hunter 19 with a full deck and self-draining cockpit will stay afloat long after the crew have given up caring. Stay away from the Blue Men of Shiant and you'll be fine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That would be, as said, a good boat. There's quite a few sound little boats like that. Prelude, Foxcub etc., all available for less than £1500 for a good one with a trailer. Don't be tempted to buy a rough one cheap. a set of sails would set you back £700, so you may as well shop for a top quality example. There is a young guy who was on the next mooring to me with a rough Europa was planning to take it to sea and do a Round-Britain. He is an RYA Instructor so presumably knows what he is about.

I seem to remember considering one of these back in 2002, and I got a PBO report on it. If I'm correct then it was the lifting keel version I was interested and the only downside as I recall was that the lifting mechanism was hydraulic and the ram is installed upside down in the keel box, which meant if it corroded/failed it had to be cut out as it was otherwise inaccessible (and I suppose irreplaceable). So watch out for that

my first boat was a Europa,fin/bulb keel, very fast, great first boat, big enough for two / three to cruise, four for a race, very seaworthy, i heartily reccomend them

Thanks very much for the responses- clearly a lot of good feeling for these wee boats! There seem to be quite a few around, and from what I've seen less than £2000 in good condition on a trailer (or with a tender and a cradle) seems to be about right. If I can haggle that down then that's all the better. Any idea what the hull speed would be for one of these? Also, (and I know this is a hard thing to quantify!) how much of a chop does it take to make things slow and unpleasant? Out of interest, much of my sailing has been aboard traditional Sgoth Niseach fishing boats (see www.ansulaire.com ) which have a shallow double-ended clinker hull and a dipping lugsail. They're good, fun boats, but windward performance is a bit lacking compared to modern rigs! However at 27 and 33ft the two that I have sailed are obviously a bit bigger than the Hunter, but I guess I'm comparing Apples and Pears now.

They will do about 5 knots and a bit. But are not easy to get planing as they have a narrow stern. Which is good news in a rough following sea. My Foxcub had a broad flat stern which would plane but was a pain in the arse when running.

EZLee said: Hi Paul, I came across this thread as just in the process of purchasing 'folly' which has been advertised as built in 1995 as a Hunter Europa 19, although a previous bill of sale states it was built in 1972, the boat is still in he water and i have looked at here and she seems fine, just wondered if you know exactly when she was built or can offer some information, advice, or feedback for her please? Well this thread was a bit of a blast from the past! I never did buy the Hunter. Got a Wayfarer instead, then a year later an Albin Vega. I do wonder how things would have worked out with the Hunter. Might well have put off the other half for life.

I was just about to tell you that Hunter is a bad decision, but now I see the topic is from 2008 and you got Wayfarer)) great choice

Hunter Boats Ltd.

For some years, Hunter Boats was among the largest sailboat builders in Britain. The first sailboat was the SQUIB, designed by Oliver Lee. At this time the company was called the Essex Boat Company. In the early 1970’s the company moved to a new custom built factory off Sutton Rd, in Rochford and became Hunter Boats, founded by Michael Polard. Oliver Lee designed several other Hunters for the renamed Hunter Boats Ltd between 1969 and 1975. These included the HUNTER 490, the HUNTER 701, the TRACER (a mini SQUIB with lifting keel) and the revamped HUNTER 19 (which became the HUNTER EUROPA.) By 1975 Hunter Boats had adopted David Thomas as their designer of choice. The very successful SONATA was a development of his Quarter Tonner, Quarto. This was followed by the IMPALA, the DELATA 25, the MEDINA 20, and the somewhat unorthodox but very popular cat ketch-rigged centreboarder, the LIBERTY 22 and 23. A gaff-rigged sister-ship went under the name of the MINSTREL 23. During this period, the company was also building a few, more performance oriented boats including the lifting keel 22’ FORMULA ONE and FORMULA 28 by Steven Jones. There was also a more exotic production Half Ton Van de Stadt designed HB31. She and the Formula designs were the first production boats to use Kevlar in their standard laminates. In 1984, Hunters decided to investigate Twin Keels and move towards cruisers rather than Cruiser-Racers. The first of this new range of cruisers was the HORIZON 26, which won the Best Production Boat of the Year Award in 1984. She was soon joined by the twin keel DUETTE 23 (a SONATA development with twin keels), the HORIZON 27, 272 and 273, and the HORIZON 32 wheelhouse cruiser. The new 32 also won the Award for the best Production Cruiser of the year in 1987. The Fin Keel Hunter 27OOD was a larger rigged and quicker version of the HORIZON 27. The last Horizon models were the 21, 23 and the 30; also predominantly Twin Keelers. In 1991, the new CHANNEL 323 was the biggest cruiser in the range. Most had twin keels, but a later introduced 323 Fin Keeler was also popular. In the 1994, Hunter Boats introduced the new Ranger hull shape. Designed by David Thomas, these hulls have long waterlines, great stability and a subtle chine that runs from transom to amidships. This adds further to stability and produces a hull that sails in a straight line with consummate ease. Hunter owners had become less interested in racing over the years; solid and quick cruisers were becoming more in demand. The RANGER 265 and RANGER 245 follow this theme. The PILOT 27 is a deck saloon development, offering inside steering and all round vision from the dinette settees. Now the new CHANNEL 27 cruiser, which is a conventional roof version of the PILOT 27, has replaced the RANGER 265. The HUNTER 707, a high performance sportboat was introduced in 1995. In 1996, she was voted Yacht of the Year. An all new CHANNEL 31 was launched in 2000. In 2003 came the MYSTERY 35. In 2003, Hunter Boats was taken over by the Select Yachts Group, which also comprised Cornish Crabbers, Red Fox Yachts, the Landau Launch Company and Cornish Diva. In 2009 LAUREN MARINE purchased the rights/brand and mould tools for the BRITISH HUNTER RANGE of yachts. Phone 02380 438551 Email [email protected]

The Hunter 490 was the first boat I ever owned. Having moved from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, to South Benfleet, in Essex, I joined the Thames Estuary Yacht Club. Here I was able to joining members on their dinghies if they needed a crew (albeit an inexperienced rookie!). After a year I was chomping at the bit to own a boat. The older members were really patient with me when I discussed the possibility of building a 30 ft yacht from plans! But some other members were thinking of graduating from racing dinghies to keelboats. One Sunday, when we had some friends visiting for the weekend, I took the male friend to the yacht club for a drink and a look round. On arrival at the club jetty I found a chap called Malcolm McKeag who was showing off a pretty little yacht - the Hunter 490 - and offering test sails in it. I didn't hesitate. What a thrilling little boat she was. Perfect for a first boat. So on Monday morning, after a brief discussion with my wife, I turned up at the Hunter factory at Rochford where I met Malcolm, Peter Poland, Derek Chardin and his father John Chardin. And I placed a deposit for a 490, to be fully completed by them (my work commitments didn't leave time for building a boat!). When I told the club members what I had done, there was considerable interest. So much so that Hunter Boats received a further 7 orders for 490s from the club. It was agreed that all were to be launched on the same day with a little naming ceremony being performed by Peter Poland and our special guest, Nicolette Milnes-Walker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolette_Milnes-Walker). This was the start of some excellent sailing days and racing in our ready-made fleet. We even had our own cruiser class at Burnham Week!

Hi David, Thanks for your comment. I happened to buy Nicolette's record-breaking Pioneer 9 'Aziz'. I would have loved to meet her. You can find mention of 'Aziz' in the blog by entering the boat's name in the search box. I wonder what happened to all the 490's at the Thames Estuary Yacht Club? Cheers, Bill.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
