Luxury superyacht destroyed in massive fire after exploding while moored at Hamilton Island Marina in the Whitsundays

A luxury superyacht docked at a marina in the Whitsundays has exploded into a ball of flames, spewing enormous plumes of smoke into the air and blanketing nearby vessels.

A luxury superyacht docked in the Whitsundays has been completely destroyed in a massive inferno after a blaze ignited on board the high end vessel.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews were called to Hamilton Island Marina at about 10:45am on Monday to find the luxury boat fully engulfed in flames.

Giant plumes of thick black smoke were seen spewing into the air, blanketing nearby vessels.

It's understood no one was onboard when the fire broke out, however a man in his 40s and a man in his 60s have been assessed for smoke inhalation.

A QFES spokesman told skynews.com.au it took firefighters almost two hours to contain the blaze.

They remained at the scene alongside police to monitor the "active flames" and "smoke" as they tried to stop the giant vessel from sinking. 

The cause of the blaze is not yet clear and investigations are continuing.

A blaze that erupted at a Whitsundays island marina on Monday morning has caused extensive damage to a luxury yacht.

Authorities report the fire broke out onboard the boat, which was moored at Hamilton Island Marina, just before 11am.

Emergency services took several hours to contain the blaze, with active flames and smoke still evident at 1pm. 

No-one was on board at the time of the fire, but a man in his 40s and man in his 60s have been assessed for smoke inhalation. 

A spokesperson from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said one crew was able to contain the fire. 

A spokesperson from the Queensland Police Service said officers had to travel from Airlie Beach to attend the scene. 

The cause of the fire is unknown.

25m Sunseeker 82 goes up in flames in Australia

A 25 metre Sunseeker 82 model has been engulfed in a fire at the marina of Hamilton Island, in Queensland, Australia. The yacht is believed to be called Time Out .

According to local reports, the yacht fire broke out at 10am local time and continued for at least five hours, with emergency services hindered by windy weather.

The blaze was eventually extinguished, but the hull remains smouldering in the marina. The fire was contained to a single vessel and no one was on board at the time of the incident.

No injuries have been reported, but a statement by Queensland Ambulance Service has indicated that members of the public who have gone to the marina to look at the fire have suffered smoke inhalation.

Emergency services are now working to prevent the hull from sinking and curb any further pollution in the vicinity.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The peace of Hamilton Island in Far North Queensland has been disturbed by a fire onboard a stunning Sunseeker 82 motor yacht, Time Out.

Emergency services attended the Hamilton Island Marina on the morning of the 24th October as the blaze broke out. The marina staff swung into action efficiently and effectively, working with firefighters to contain the flames with crew from the yacht having provided that critical first response.

Nautilus Marine Insurance, were immediately responsive providing the expertise that has earned them a well-deserved reputation in the marine market. Within one day their Loss Adjustor and Marine Surveyor was at the marina managing the incident site to minimise any environmental impact. The Nautilus Marine Insurance claims team was equally responsive; with the vessel owners’ insurance claim approved and accepted within seven business days for a sum in excess of $1,500,000.

The fire onboard had caused the yacht to sink to the seabed which indicated the intensity of the fire and severity of the damage to the hull. Within such a pristine environment this was of immediate concern to the insurance team who had immediately organised professional divers to secure any potential for pollution damage.

Assisted by a range of photos provided by the yacht mechanic, the diver operation was very successful with the required lines being blocked and the fuel contained. The site is being monitored constantly with additional resources being utilised as soon as required.

Micheal Lieberman, Nautilus Marine Insurance’s Loss Adjustor and Marine Surveyor is onsite at Hamilton Island. “As a professional I have attended many salvages and none of them are ever the same. The Nautilus Marine Insurance team started the site management for this incident as soon as we got the call with team members being on a plane to the island within hours.”

Lieberman went on to highlight the complexity of the situation “Being a large vessel resting on the seabed the issues with this salvage are manifold and, like all incidents in marine locations, must be carried out with an abundance of caution and consideration for the environment and local community.”

Time Out owners representative Tom van Vliet was keen to praise both the Nautilus Marine Insurance and Hamilton Island Marina teams for their response to the incident. “Having Time Out destroyed by such a devastating fire has been very upsetting for everyone involved. However, both myself and the owners have been comforted by the support we have received from both the Hamilton Island Marina team and the Nautilus Marine Insurance team. The fact our insurance claim has been accepted so quickly has given us peace of mind and the ability to move forward from a very distressing situation.”

A multimillion-dollar motor cruiser once owned by the family behind the Wild Oats XI yacht has been destroyed in a massive fire in Sydney’s north.

Emergency services were called to Woolwich Dock about 8.10pm on Saturday following reports of a boat fire.

NCA NewsWire understand the boat, Andiamo - which is estimated to be worth between $5 and $10 million - was once owned by Sandy Oatley, the son of the late Australian yachtsman and businessman, Bob Oatley.

The family is best known for owning the nine-time Sydney-Hobart-winning yacht Wild Oats XI.

Upon arrival, the boat was found to be fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked for some time to extinguish the massive fire, a difficult task given the extent of the fuel load.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the boat was filled with 4000 litres of diesel when the fire broke out.

“It took so long [to extinguish the fire] because it’s a large vessel, and we had no access onto the yacht itself, it just wasn’t safe to get on board,” he said.

Police have confirmed the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

There are no reports of any injuries.

The Oatley family have been spending time on Hamilton Island for the tourist hot spot’s annual race week, hosted from August 19 to 26.

They are celebrating 20 years of owning the iconic island destination, after the Oatley patriarch purchased the island in 2003 for $200 million.

It is understood two other famous boats usually docked at the Woolwich Dock - where the Oatley’s own the lease - Wild Oats XI and Andoo Comanche, were both docked on Hamilton Island at the time of the fire.

Law Connect - which came in second to Comanche in the 2022 Sydney to Hobart race - was moored at the

dock on Saturday night but was not damaged by the fire.

Officers attached to the Marine Area Command have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Anyone with information into the incident is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Diesel fuel has leaked into the water at a popular Australian holiday destination after a luxury superyacht caught fire and sank. 

The 25-metre Sunseeker 82 Yacht, believed to be called 'Time Out', was docked on Hamilton Island, in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, when a blaze erupted onboard.

Firefighters were called to Marine Terrace marina at about 10.40am on Monday and worked for over seven hours to extinguish the engulfed vessel. 

Active flames were still visible on the bow just before 8pm as the rear of the boat sank spilling less than 100 litres of diesel fuel into the crystal clear water.

The vessel had 2,000 litres of fuel on board, however due to the quick thinking of the salvage team who shut off the fuel valves, less than 100 litres leaked out.   

While the vessel was engulfed in flames, pollution absorbent booms were placed around the boat, which prevented debris from entering the water, with all debris contained and eventually scooped out.  

The booms will remain in place allowing any further debris falling from the boat to be removed from the water. 

An eyewitness who was holidaying on the island said massive plumes of smoke billowed from the yacht for at least 10 hours as fire crews set up a base outside the island's only supermarket. 

She told Daily Mail Australia giant fans were installed to cool the firefighters down as they scrambled to contain the blaze on a 30C day on the humid tropical island.

The yacht was built in the UK, with interiors styled by British designer Ken Freivokh - boasting four suites which could sleep eight people. 

Emergency Services VMR Whitsundays Skipper Mal Priday said VMR1 had to be moved several times to get clear of the acrid, thick smoke in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

'On the way across, we could still see smoke even from the middle of the Whitsunday Passage, more than six hours after it had started,' Mr Priday wrote.

'We had permission to disembark the firies and their gear as close as we dared to get to the burning boat.  

'Some adjacent boats had smoke and a bit of heat damage, lucky no other vessels suffered the same fate. 

'VMR1 had to be moved a couple of times to get clear of the acrid, thick smoke that was swirling around, with flames rising up to 5 metres...'

Mr Priday said firefighters decided to let the fire burn out despite active flames still visibly burning on the bow of the boat as it was impossible to get to them.  

Queensland Ambulance Service said some members of the public who had gone to the marina to watch the fire suffered smoke inhalation.

'Time Out' was delivered in 2003 by UK-based luxury superyacht builder Sunseeker.

The yacht, which was part of the Sunseeker 82 line, featured an exterior design signed off by longtime Sunseeker partner Don Shead Yacht Design.  

The luxury boat accommodated eight guests across four staterooms and three crew members in two cabins and was powered by twin engines - giving it a top speed of 32 knots. 

The model sold for up to $7.5m in the year it was released, with pre-owned boats selling for between $2.1m and $3.95m in 2022. 

No one was onboard the luxury boat when the fire broke out and there are no reports of anyone injured.

 Hamilton Island is a luxury holiday destination off the coast of Queensland near Airlie Beach. 

The Island is located 265 km from the Great Barrier Reef - roughly two hours via catamaran.

Moscow in flames: Huge fire breaks out at warehouse sending up massive plumes of smoke

A huge fire has broken an industrial warehouse in a suburb southeast of Moscow. The large blaze broke out at a fertiliser warehouse in Ramenskoye on Sunday

According to Russian media, the fire started at a neighbouring fertiliser manufacturer's warehouse and was caused by negligence.

The fire follows a series of drone strikes on Moscow, its surroundings, and numerous other Russian cities.

Though it is currently unclear whether this specific fire was caused by such a strike.

There has been no official response from Ukrainian authorities to this latest incident.

According to the Russian state news agency RIA, the fire reached an area of 2,700 square metres before being controlled and extinguished.

Moscow region prosecutor's office has claimed the initial cause of the incident was a violation of fire safety standards while welding, as reported by the TASS official news agency.

Russian media reports that the warehouse had been evacuated.

On July 30 and August 1, a high-rise Moscow City office block, which includes multiple Russian ministries, was damaged by two drone attacks targeting the same site.

Russia has blamed the Ukrainian military for these strikes. On August 11, it was claimed that Moscow's air defence intercepted an attack drone.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, the drone's debris landed near the Karamyshevskaya embankment in the western section of the city.

According to reports, there were no fatalities or serious damage.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the aircraft was destroyed by electronic warfare and fell in a forest.

According to the government, Ukraine allegedly sought to strike an unidentified location within Moscow.

Huge fire engulfs shopping centre in Moscow suburb

At least one person dies in blaze raging through Mega Khimki shopping centre.

Russian firefighters have put out a massive blaze that engulfed one of the largest shopping centres in a suburb of the capital, Moscow, leading to the collapse of part of the structure and one death.

The fire early on Friday spread over an area of about 7,000 square metres (75,000 square feet) in the Mega Khimki shopping and entertainment centre, authorities said.

The head of the Russian emergencies ministry, Sergey Poletykin, reported that at least one person had been killed in the incident, with the fire put down at 10:45am (7:35 GMT).

More than 70 firefighters and 20 fire trucks had been sent to the site, emergency services said. The work was hampered due to the design of the building, which is located about 7km (4 miles) from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, they said.

“Due to the collapse of the roof, the fire spread instantly to a large area,” the Moscow region’s emergency services said on Telegram.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said it was looking into the cause of the fire.

The head of the Moscow region’s emergency services agency said it appeared the blaze was the result of safety regulations being violated during repair work on the building.

A worker told TASS a short circuit might have caused the fire, followed by an explosion that caused the flames to spread.

Russian news agencies had earlier reported that emergency services were considering “arson” as a possible cause.

Videos on social media showed a huge fire, with people fleeing the burning building into a parking lot.

Mega Khimki had been home to a large number of Western retail chains before the companies’ departure from Russia in the wake of the Ukraine war , including one of the first IKEA stores in the Moscow area.

Russia has seen a number of deadly fires at entertainment venues in recent years.

Last month, a fire killed 13 people at a bar in the city of Kostroma. A drunk man had reportedly fired a flare gun indoors but inadequate fire safety regulations caused the large number of deaths, authorities had said.

In 2018, a fire killed 60 people in a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo.

In 2009, another blaze at a nightclub in the Urals city of Perm killed 156 people.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Investigators were trying Thursday to determine what touched off a fire on the Atlantic City Boardwalk a day earlier that burned a section of the historic walkway and damaged part of the facade of Resorts casino.

Although the fire damaged the casino’s main Boardwalk entrance, Resorts remains open through a secondary entrance on the Boardwalk as well as several entrances along its side across from the parking lots.

By Thursday afternoon, the casino was allowing patrons to enter from the Boardwalk through one door that was undamaged, with the rest of the entrance blocked off by metal barriers.

The fire that broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday burned parts of the Boardwalk-facing facade of the casino, including an awning and doors to the casino.

Fire Chief Scott Evans said Thursday a cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Investigators were looking into several possibilities, including an electrical malfunction in one of the numerous utility lines running underneath the wooden walkway, or the possibility that homeless people taking shelter under the Boardwalk accidentally started the fire.

That was believed to have been the cause of a similar fire in February that burned up to the edge of the Ocean Casino Resort but did not damage the building itself, authorities said at the time.

About 30 firefighters brought Wednesday’s fire under control in 40 minutes, and no injuries were reported.
