The GP42 was the attempt of International Sailing Federation and ORC to promote a new “box rule” for fast, pure racing boats in the TP52 style but smaller in dimensions and with more affordable budget.

The first GP42 boats were launched in 2006 and first races were held in 2007; although the boats were nice to see and fast, and for a couple of seasons they competed in the same events of the TP52, the class never took off. for this reason, the boats were switched from the own class races to the wider “corrected times” scenario or, more recently, joined the new Fast 40+ IRC class: in both situation GP42 proved to be highly competitive. During 2017 we were happy to support Black Jack Sailing Team in Greece in updating and improving their boat performances. Originally built as Roma, the first GP42 ever built by Farr Design and Latini Boatyard in Rome, she was significantly updated to more modern specifications. We modified mast to allow the use of a square top main, a long carbon bowsprit to fit big masthead gennakers, instead of the original spinnakers on pole. Finally in 2017 there was a complete revision of weights distribution, moving ballast from bilge to keel to increase stability and therefore power, a reshaped keel fin to help upwind performances and an optimized sailplan made this boat highly competitive again and, after first test in 2017, they are ready for ORC Europeans 2018 in Cyprus.

The Grand Prix 42 is a light displacement racing yacht characterised by high sail area to weight and high sail area to wetted surface area ratios and a low centre of gravity that will deliver high performance sailing both upwind and downwind and in all wind strengths.

The GP42 is similar in concept and has similar performance characteristics to the TP52 class, but comes at a much more affordable price. Like the TP52 class, the GP42 is governed by a tightly controlled box rule with strict maximum and minimum limits to control hull, keel, rig and sail plan dimensions and stability. However, unlike the TP52 class, the GP42 class rule does not require IMS measurement procedures to assess stability and it is therefore much simpler as a result.

The Humphreys designed GP42 stems from an extensive research effort. A tank test programme has been undertaken and a detailed weather analysis has been performed for a range of typical Mediterranean venues. The hull structure has been engineered to meet the minimum class displacement and considerable weight optimisation has taken place in order to reduce the boats pitch gyradius.

The dibley design advantage, gp 42' racing yacht, this performance racing yacht was designed under the influence of the orc level class gp42 rule which is a box rule that specify’s minimum and maximum parameters in length, beam, sail area, stability and various other areas..

We approached this box rule in two ways. Both ways fit within the rules, but we looked at the option of a longer, more voluminous cabin to cater for occasional weekend regattas in mixed fleets [this one is shown] ; and a shorter cabin / longer cockpit that fits to the minimum required accommodation and cabin volume requirements. The hull has been designed to be easily driven. The hull incorporates a fine ‘V’ shaped entry with narrow waterline but moderate overall beam and a well-balanced hull volume distribution allowing superior performance characteristics. The carbon rig will be engineered by Chris Mitchell of Applied Engineering Ltd . who has been involved in countless number of racing yachts over the years. The powerful sail area is well balanced with the high righting moment of this design. The interior has been designed around the Class Rules. Structural Engineering is being done alongside High Modulus who will be basing their work in line with Class Rules. Their own in-house safety margins will also be used where it is deemed necessary. Overall, this is the class of the future. Where one design and mixed fleets will always have there following, the new box rule format allows close competition but allowing some owner / designer flair that keeps the fleets interesting. GP 42 (Orc)

GP 42 (Orc) is a 41 ′ 11 ″ / 12.8 m monohull sailboat starting in 2010.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
