It’s a cruise ship...no, a billionaire’s mega yacht

Shelley Holmes wondered who owns the luxurious navy blue and white mystery yacht anchored out in San Diego’s harbor north of the Maritime Museum.

It’s the 332-foot Attessa IV, belonging to industrialist billionaire Dennis Washington .

He’s the Montana-based founder of the Washington Companies and a long-time San Diego visitor. His $150 million yacht, described as “one of the most exquisite” by Forbes.com, has been a frequent sight at the Kona Kai Marina on Shelter Island.

On June 4, however, the yacht was all decked out for a party. Washington’s invitees celebrated the 90th birthday of Bill McComas , a part-time resident of Rancho Santa Fe. McComas is one of the founders of IGT ( International Gaming Technologies), a firm dominating the poker video gaming machine market.

In the interest of trivial pursuit, Washington’s predecessor Attessa yacht, although it bore a different name, was used the 1987 film “Overboard” starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell . That Attessa also appeared in the 1993 movie “Indecent Proposal” with Robert Redford and Demi Moore.

Helping hand: Sharon LeeMaster , the voice for numerous local not-for-profit organizations, fell and broke her wrist the other evening. Despite her pain, she kept an appointment the following morning to deliver donated Padres ballgame tickets to the San Diego Madres for its fundraiser.

While there, a kindly member of the Madres volunteered to help her while she is on the mend. “Could I come by and read to you, or do whatever you need?” queried Dorothy Yonimitsu .

The age of the lady so generously offering her services? 98.

Busy as a bell: The local Spirit of Liberty Foundation’s America’s Freedom Bell traveled to the World War II monument in Washington, D.C., for Memorial Day. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter rang the huge bronze bell, which resembles the Liberty Bell, as did thousands of other attendees.

After the ceremony, the bell rode on a float in the Memorial Day parade then was bundled up and flown to France for the international observance of D-Day in Normandy on June 5 and 6.

The bell was originally cast on June 6, 2013. It bears the symbols of all the branches of the Armed Forces and contains metal from the Twin Towers destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Good sports: Soccer player Kraig Chiles was honored as San Diego’s 2016 “Sports Man of the Year” at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Stealing some of the San Diego Sockers star’s spotlight, however, was his “date” at the Taste 4 Sports event — Chiles’ 2-year-old daughter.

Perennial attendee Bill Walton was unable to be at the celebration this year but his presence was felt nonetheless — a dinner with the hoops star was auctioned for more than $400.

Welcoming new seasons, saying goodbye to kahuna sportfishing | fish rap.

Monterey Bay anglers continue to enjoy fishing for our wintertime species all across the Bay from Monterey to Santa Cruz. For charter boats, the primary prey continues to be small flatfish caught from deep waters. Sand dabs may be little, but when you can catch and keep as many as you’d like, fun times and food supplies are guaranteed.

Chris’ Fishing Trips out of Monterey reported the usual “Lots of sand dabs” for their trips this week, plus 60 petrale sole for the Check Mate and 26 Dungeness crab pulled up on the Caroline.

Stagnaro’s Sportfishing in Santa Cruz is enjoying the same sort of success. Owner Ken Stagnaro reported, “21 anglers on board Legacy, caught 350 nice sand dabs and 10 petrale sole! It’s been a great season for dabs this winter!”

We have finally reached the month of March. This means it’s time to start gearing up for our annual season openers. Beth Norton from Go Fish Santa Cruz is enthused. Her latest message says, “We are looking forward to 2022 fishing season. Rockcod season opens (April 1). Salmon season opens (April 2). Meanwhile, JT is busy making upgrades to the charter boat Miss Beth. New fiberglass deck, a lot of polishing, painting and other improvements. JT will be the Captain and JP, who we all know and love, will be the deckhand. The best around!” (Disclaimer: Beth Norton is JT Thomas’ mother, but we cannot argue with her assessment of the Miss Beth and crew being the best. It’s a clean, fast boat, very roomy and the crew are wild-men when it comes to getting their clients on fish!)

Santa Cruz Coastal Fishing Charters is another six-pack operation operating from Santa Cruz Harbor. Owner Rodney Armstrong and his crew have been busy as a hive of hornets down on S Dock all winter. Captain Rodney took the plunge at the end of the season last year and upgraded his boat. Armstrong is understandably excited, saying, “Here we go folks! New addition to our business! Get ready for a smooth comfortable ride. She’s 35 feel, 4 inches long and 12 feet, 1 inch wide, with a bit more speed than the Salmon Streaker. The Streaker has been good to us, but we can’t wait to be running in the Knot Alone! Now we got a head, 5KW generator, killer stereo system, heating, and of course most importantly tons of fishing room!” The new Maine Coaster is powered by an inboard Volvo Penta and looks to be a perfect six-packer for our area.

On a more regretful note, we’ve learned that the famous Kahuna Sportfishing operation from Moss Landing has shut down operations and sold the boat. The Kahuna is now berthed in San Diego and is likely to be operating from H&M Landing. Owner Carol Jones is of mixed emotions regarding the end of her 30-odd years operating the only charter boat out of Moss. “The Kahuna has been sold!!!!” Carol reports. “Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the years. It has been a good ride but I’m off to other adventures.” The Kahuna was special in so many ways. The boat is a 50-foot Delta custom built with no step deck and a “one-off” custom Hoquiam pilothouse/cabin. Originally built for the Delta Company’s owner, Jones purchased the Kahuna 33 years ago from the owners’ son. It featured a smaller cabin to accommodate more fishing deck space. And, it’s fast. Jones said, “It runs through the water like no other Delta.”

That speed was a plus for Jones and allowed Kahuna Charters to offer adventurous fishing trips to more remote locations. They are famous for their “Long Range” bottom fishing forays as far as southern Big Sur. Kahuna would range as far north as Ano Nuevo and Franklin Point as well. The Kahuna was also the premier salmon mooching and halibut hunting large charter vessel in Monterey Bay. They were also dedicated to chasing albacore tuna far offshore when those fish were available.

Carol Jones poured her heart and soul into the Kahuna Charter operations and gained a fierce following of loyal clients, dedicated anglers all. We’re sure it’s bittersweet for Carol, relinquishing this major part of her life. On a happy note, she can relax a bit these days. Charter boat operations carry an incredible amount of stress along with the joy of providing good (sometimes spectacular) fishing for her clients. If you have memories or great stories of times on the Kahuna, please drop Carol a line. She knows she has my heartfelt thanks for her dedication all these years, and I’m sorry to see the Kahuna go.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

• The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
• The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
• Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

The Life of a Fisherman

An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied only a little while. The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life, senor."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat, then eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But senor, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15-20 years."

But what then, senor? The American laughed and said that's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions. Millions, senor? Then what? The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

EVENT DETAILS

2023 brings some changes and we are excited!

This epic event is evolving and we are looking forward to your continued participation and support to raise money for beach volleyball and keeping our beaches in San Diego at their best.

Divisions include Men's  (all levels), Women's  (all levels) and Coed  (all levels)

Entry fee is $45/per person and includes your entry, 1 drink ticket... we get a beer garden this year!!

Teams must have a minimum of 4 people up to 10 people.

Registration is now open. Price will go up to $55/pp on day of the event .

OCTOBER 14TH - DAY OF EVENT

Setup: 6:30-8:00 am

Checkin: 7:30-8:30 am

Morning Announcements: 8:45 am

Pool Play: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Teams will get get ranked and advance into playoffs.

Lunch: Food will be available for purchase and we will make sure all vendors have a vegan option on their menu.

Playoffs: 12:30-5:30 pm.

$1000 Cash Prize + will go to the winners of Men's & Women's Open Divisions.

$400 Cash Prizes + Swag will be awarded to 1st Place for Coed.

2nd Place for all divisions will also get prizes.

We are recruiting people to help with sponsorships, recruiting teams, admin, social media and day of event helpers (setup/breakdown, check-in, beer garden helpers, ambassadors, music/dj, photography, and other event supporters).
