42ft Catamaran Comparisons & New Fountaine Pajot 42

UPDATE: We are always touring, conducting sea trials, and evaluating new catamaran models. Check out our newer 42ft catamaran model comparison .

FP 42

It is a much anticipated model in the Fountaine Pajot range  and is has all the great features of the hugely popular Saona 47 .

It is a very good-looking catamaran with the typical new Fountaine Pajot features like the semi-flybridge with easy access to the boom, an electric dinghy platform, coffee table and deep comfortable seating in the salon and cockpit. It looks like it will be another hit from Fountaine Pajot catamaran builders! We are super excited to be at the unveiling of this catamaran model in France and we will report back with a video walk-through! Join Us in France to view the NEW FP 42!

42-ft Catamaran Comparisons

While we are on the 42-ft catamaran subject, we decided to do a quick comparison of the three 42-ft French catamaran brands, the Bali 4.3 Loft , the Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 and the Lagoon 42 . There are several major differences in these catamarans and initially, this is how they match up.

42ft catamarans comparison

Interior Comparison of 42ft Catamarans

  • The Bali 4.3 Loft (interior pictured at right) has an open platform and the indoor living space becomes an all-in-one indoor/outdoor area once the “garage door” lifts up into the ceiling . The convertible door is a unique feature and, when open, makes it look like a much bigger catamaran. The cabins are adequate but the bathrooms are smaller with wet heads, which can be a deal breaker for some.
  • The Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 is plush and comfortable with a well-appointed galley and sliding doors that open the salon up to the very big cockpit. The cabins are nice as expected and spacious with island beds.
  • The Lagoon 42 is also well-appointed and comfortable with an even bigger cockpit but has the mast centered in the salon. This could be a make-or-break situation for some, but for the most part it doesn’t seem to bother the people who own them. The cabins are a very nice size with island beds and ample storage.

Exterior Comparison of 42-ft Catamarans

Lagoon 42

  • The FP 42 has the semi-flybridge with very easy access to the coachroof and boom. It is a safe boat to sail for a couple and if it is anything like the Helia 44 or Lucia 40, it will perform well. The FP has by far the most sail area. The optional dinghy platform is a nice feature.
  • The Lagoon 42 is similarly well appointed with a semi-flybridge, a very nice helm station and easy access to the coachroof. The major difference with this Lagoon is the mast that is set very far aft, thus the mast position in the salon. With the boom further aft, the boom is shorter, but it has a high aspect mainsail with a squaretop providing good sail area aloft. Having said that, we think that the Lagoon 42 needs more sail area and adding a Screecher or Asymmetrical to your suit of sails, would be well advised.  Read more about the Lagoon 42 .

Other Observations About 42-ft Catamarans

  • The Bali 4.3 is almost $100,000 more expensive than the other catamarans.
  • The Fountaine Pajot 42 engines are small.
  • The Lagoon 42 water tanks could be an issue. The option is one 300L water tank if you choose a generator and watermaker – not ideal, but workable.
  • The styling of these catamarans is very different. The FPs are plush, comfortable, and modern. The Lagoon on the other hand is bigger in volume and the styling is user-friendly, but slightly more masculine while the Bali has a very sporty look and has gone completely modern and minimalist.
  • Looking at the specifications, the performance of these catamarans should be very evenly matched, even though the salespeople of the different brands would like to convince you otherwise. If you are not sure, read this article on catamaran performance .

Boat Review: Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: July 2, 2019

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42

Based in La Rochelle, the French builder Fountaine Pajot has been crafting good-looking, well-designed, dependable cruising catamarans for over four decades now, and they have the drill down pat. I’ve always found their boats to be well put-together, fun to sail and with all the boxes ticked with regard to comfort, innovation and performance, both underway and with the hook down. Simply put, they’re cool cats. Their new Astréa 42 more than holds her own in the company’s wide range, which now extends from 40 to 67 feet.

It’s probably apparent that I’m a fan of the brand, but I’m not alone. When the company unveiled plans for the Astréa at the Cannes Boat Show two years ago, the following few months they took over 150 orders for the boat…before a single one was launched. By any measure, it was an immediate success.

It’s funny, with monohulls we’ve come to accept so-called “traditional” layouts: owner’s cabin with double berth forward; saloon with dining table centrally located; galley and navigation station to either side, respectively, of the companionway. But over the years, catamaran design has evolved in such a way that cats have established their own traditional accommodations plan as well: double doors connecting the saloon with the spacious cockpit; helm station raised to starboard; galley stationed aside the doors for convenience and entertaining; settee, dining table and nav station forward in the saloon; and sleeping cabins stashed in the hulls (often, with one hull reserved exclusively for the owners with a luxurious bed, small office, lots of storage, and a dedicated head and shower).

That’s the menu here, executed with an extra helping of French style and panache. I loved the arrangement of the raised helm station, with the space split between two compartments, or pods. The forward one contains all the sailing controls—the sheets, traveler and Lewmar winches, including an electric one for raising the hefty, square-topped mainsail. The aft pod is for the helmsman, and includes a bench seat for two, a full suite of Garmin instruments and autopilot, the engine controls, and even the buttons for raising and lowering the Quick windlass, because why not? Hop up a few steps, and there’s access to the sun deck and cushions on the coach roof which, come to think of it, has become another traditional feature for so many cat builders.

RELATED: Fountaine Pajot Saona 47

Likewise, the company has done a sensational job with the owner’s cabin that runs the length of the starboard hull and can be closed off into a truly private space. The queen berth aft is terrific, with easy side access. The centralized desk is a place where you could really get some work done. Storage closets and drawers abound. The separated head and gargantuan shower stall all the way forward would be the envy of many a high-end hotel. Once you’re aboard the Astréa, you’d need a really good reason to step off.

Fountaine Pajot is mindful of saving weight in the building process, as heavy cats are not lively ones. The infused hulls employ balsa core in the topsides, to just below the waterline; the injected decks are cored with foam. All the bulkheads are composite laminates, though Alpi wood is used for the furniture and trim. The small keels, which enhance tracking and stability, are sacrificial blades that are glued to the hulls, not bolted, so in the unfortunate event of a hard grounding, they’ll shear off and not compromise the vessel’s integrity. The engine compartments are vast and accessible. All the wiring is clearly labeled—though in French. Attention to detail has been paid throughout.

We test sailed the boat in light fall weather on Chesapeake Bay, when the breeze failed to rise above 6 knots. Still we had a nice sail, nearly notching 4 knots of boat speed both upwind and on a reach. The twin headsails provide some versatility in shifting gears in relation to wind speed and angle. My notes were simple: “Tight steering. Fun to drive.”

The Astréa we sailed, nicely equipped, came in at $645,000 . Many new owners take delivery in France and initially explore Europe and the Med, sampling plenty of local cuisine, before sailing on. In so many ways, it’d be one tasty trip.

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 (2019) 'Brown Eyed Girl'

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 Exterior

The Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 Features:

The Astréa 42 is distinguished by its abundance of natural light, energetic lines, elegant living spaces and unparalleled comfort while delivering sheer pleasure underway. A joy to share as a couple or with family and friends, this new catamaran promises every leg of your travels will be memorable.

The Astréa 42 demonstrates the boatyard’s commitment to innovation while preserving the classic identity of the Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans’ range. She features all the elements that contributed to making our latest new boat, the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47, an international success. Her inverted bow, the new signature mark of the range, gives the boat an elegant and dynamic line while offering incomparable interior space.

The new Astréa 42 was awarded “2018 Multihull of the Year” by Le Monde du Multi and the famous French magazine Voile.

Enjoy the Sea to its Fullest

The Astréa 42 was conceived and designed to facilitate free-flowing movement throughout the boat, as well as linking the helm station with the outdoor relaxation and living spaces from coachroof to cockpit.

The coachroof features a double seat at the helm station and a built-in sun lounger for enjoying idyllic days together.

The spacious cockpit, equipped with an optional integrated plancha grill, is the perfect place to relax and feel at one with the sea, enhanced by the Beach Club option that provides an embedded gangway flush with her line.

The incredibly comfortable lounge has been designed with expansive panoramic windows that bathe the interior in natural light. Her U-shaped galley transitions seamlessly with the cockpit courtesy of a vast sliding pocket door.

This yacht also benefits from a single/crew cabin port forward, and the salon area also converts into a double bed.

Find Your Rate Check out our special offers

Did you know Horizon’s charters start and finish at noon? This means we can get you out sailing your first afternoon after your briefings – remember to watch your video briefings to speed up your check out! At the end of your trip, you sail back to Nanny Cay to refuel and debrief before your noon departure. This gives you a full 6 nights/7 days chartering around our beautiful islands, unlike some companies that start at 5pm, meaning you will have to sleepaboard* at the docks, and then finish at 10am, again meaning you will probably have to stay overnight on the docks the night before you leave to fly home.

*If available, a sleep aboard can be added the night before your charter start for a small supplement, boarding your yacht after 5pm.

Our standard charter rates are applicable for charters of 5 days or more up to a maximum of five weeks. For a tailored quote for charter durations outside this range please contact our reservations team who will be pleased to assits.

Current Rates

Weekly rates (full 7 days / 6 nights) are listed above as daily rates. Charters start and finish at noon. Our minimum charter duration requirement is 5 nights.

Super Tender your Vacation with Horizon Yacht Charters!

catamaran pajot 42

Licensed for 6 persons, this 15ft RIB with 60HP Yamaha outboard will get you and your crew to snorkelling spots and the beach in style and comfort.

Make your charter yacht vacation a breeze – enjoy the comfort of being able to tie up your yacht for the night and then continue exploring the surrounding bays! You can pick up your mooring ball at the Bight and then head to the Indians or the Caves for a snorkel. If you visit the Dogs, there’s no need to choose only one snorkel spot for your lunch stop, zip around them all!  A swim ladder makes boarding easy from the water.

For popular spots where it’s trickier to find a mooring, the RIB is the perfect alternative. Settle into Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke for the night and then take the RIB to White Bay for the afternoon to enjoy painkillers without the hassle of finding a mooring ball or having to move your yacht for the night.

The North Sound boasts a selection of some of the best dining options in the BVI. There’s no need to settle for only one spot when you have the RIB. Pick up provisions from Leverick Bay, enjoy the plunge pool at Nova in Deep Bay, and then zip back to the sound for sundowners at Saba Rock before enjoying dinner at The Bitter End.

If you have a mix of snorkelers, beachgoers, shoppers and sailors onboard then give your group flexibility by taking the standard dinghy included in your charter as well. This will also remove the need to make multiple dinghy trips ashore for larger groups.

Get more out of your sailing vacation with Horizon- ‘Super Tender’ it!

Please note that the Super Tender is towed as it is too large for davits and tenderlifts. You can choose to take your 10ft Rib as well on catamarans (stored on the davits or tenderlift), or leave it behind. On monohulls we recommend just taking the Super Tender.

Contact our reservations team for more information. Exclusively available only to Horizon Charter guests.
