Sailboat transport is an essential and very well-established boating service with numerous options.

Sailboats can be transported by single-axle trailers, multi-axle trailers, cargo ships, and occasionally trains. Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.

In this article, we’ll cover several of the most common sailboat transportation methods. We’ll cover the details and requirements of each method, along with the required method by sailboat size and type. Additionally, we’ll explore the average costs of each method for a typical production cruising sailboat.

We sourced the information used in this article from sailboat transport agencies along with government towing and transportation guides. We carefully researched pricing to help you get a basic idea of what it’ll cost to transport a sailboat.

‍ Is Transporting a Sailboat Difficult?

It’s not necessarily difficult to transport a sailboat, but it does require care and careful planning. Your responsibilities as the sailboat owner range from trailer maintenance and careful driving to the organization of international logistics. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to streamline the process and make it easier.

Is Sailboat Transport Expensive?

Sailboat transport can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Obviously, moving a small sailboat is relatively cheap in comparison, especially if you already have a truck and a trailer.

The cost of transporting a larger boat is higher, as you’ll probably need to hire a shipping company or a crew.

There are multiple ways to transport a large sailboat, and the more economical method isn’t always immediately evident. Some boats may be cheaper to ship on a specially-designed yacht carrying vessel, while others may be cheaper if you hire a delivery crew.

Pricing varies between boats, locations, and destinations, so it’s essential to research all available methods and request multiple quotes. If you do, you could save thousands on transport and delivery, not to mention insurance costs to protect your vessel from possible damage.

Sailboat Transport Methods

There are several ways to transport a sailboat, and the ideal method depends upon the size and dry weight of the vessel. Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.

Self Towing

Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.

Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.

Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.

You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.

Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.

The Basics of Towing Rules in the United States

The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.

Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.

With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.

Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.

Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet.

Professional Towing Services

It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.

Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.

In most cases, the tow company will not be able to help you launch your boat. You’re responsible for arranging boat crane services at your destination. It’s best to plan carefully, as you may end up paying more if you make the driver wait too long.

Cost of Professional Sailboat Towing Services

Cost varies widely based on the company, location, and size of the load. Most towing companies have a base fee, a fee of the assessed load, and then a per-mile charge. Some companies have different fee structures.

Companies that offer quotes usually predict a charge of between $500 and $1,000 for typical trips, though it can cost as little as $300 if you have a relatively small boat and it only needs to travel a short distance.

Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Large and small sailboats are frequently sent across oceans via cargo ships. This method is time-tested and relatively cost-effective, though it’s not as straightforward as just sailing the boat across.

Some people hire an agent to arrange shipping, which is the easiest and most reliable way to have a headache-free experience.

Shipping a sailboat by sea is slower than over-the-road transport, and schedules are less flexible. Often, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up on a specifically-designed yacht carrying ship.

Once the ships are loaded, they set out at predetermined times that might be months ahead of when you booked. The best way to ensure you get a spot on a yacht shipping vessel is to plan well in advance of when you actually need to transport the vessel.

Logistics are the greatest challenge of shipping a boat on a larger ship. If you don’t work with an agent or an accommodating shipping company, you could have to work out the following and more:

  • Transportation to the shipping yard
  • Loading and securing instructions
  • Shipping destination
  • Payments to various services
  • Customs in the destination country (if outside of the U.S.)
  • Taxes and import fees
  • Declarations
  • Inspections
  • Unloading at the destination
  • Transportation from the destination port to the marina

As you can see, there are lots of reasons to hire a professional to manage the minutiae of shipping a sailboat. The last thing you want is to have your boat seized at customs or have it dropped off in an unguarded yard in the wrong location.

Cost to Ship a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Shipping costs for ocean-going boat transport are lower than many people expect. A lot of factors are involved, including the size of the boat, its height (from keel to mast top), its displacement, and the distance it needs to be shipped.

The lowest prices you’ll find to ship an average-sized boat are around $3,000 to $5,000. A more typical estimate for an average sailboat is between $6,000 and $10,000. Some vessels and destinations cost upwards of $15,000. Costs tend to increase with the size and distance, and the value of your sailboat also plays a part.

Prices in the yacht shipping industry are competitive, which is why it’s relatively affordable to ship a boat over an ocean. It’s surprisingly popular as well, and there are more than a dozen shipping companies offering long-distance ocean transport specifically for yachts of various sizes.

Hired Delivery

Hired crews for boat delivery is the other way to transport a sailboat over the water. Crew services find a captain and a small professional crew to sail your boat for you.

This is a great option for large boats, as it’s often less expensive and time-consuming than shipping it on a larger vessel.

Hired crew delivery services are offered by companies and experienced individuals. You can even find a trusted friend to crew your boat for you, and they can hire a crew member or two to accompany them for the journey.

While under hire, the crew will be living in your boat. Crew members come from all backgrounds, and many sailors spend a summer or two working for a charter service to make some money or get free transportation to other countries.

Cost to Hire a Delivery Crew

Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.

As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.

These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.

Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. These costs are impossible to predict without knowing your specific plans, so it’s best to reach out to Captain James Lowe for a specialized quote.

Hired crew delivery services usually have a minimum crew requirement for different boat sizes and types. In this case, sailboats require a minimum of one deckhand in addition to a captain. Larger sailing vessels of 65 feet or greater require two or more additional deckhands.

YT just completed the delivery of our Beneteau 393 from Texas to t he San Francisco Bay area. I was very impressed by their professionalism and attention to detail. Not just double checking, but triple checking important items. Their crew was very helpful with the MANY questions I had and provided a lot of details that helped me understand and feel comfortable throughout the entire process. Highly recommended!

***** 5 STAR SERVICE!!! Yacht Trucking did an outstanding job relocating our 40′ sailboat from San Diego, CA to Anacortes, WA. Our driver was extremely professional and took expert care in getting our boat secured for transport. He remained in constant communication throughout the trip, sending daily updates of his progress.  He put all my anxiety to rest and delivered our boat early in perfect condition. There’s no doubt that I will pursue his services again without hesitation.

Everyone with Yacht Trucking was extremely easy to communicate with and I received excellent service from the driver and loader. We felt very comfortable with the entire process from the minute we signed our contract; to the day our boat was delivered to the port in Port Everglades from Ventura and loaded onto the ship’s deck; all the way through until it arrived in Majorca safe and sound; exceptional people to work with for shipping sailboats overseas.

Outstanding experience transporting my houseboat from West Virginia to upstate New York. Equipment was specialized for transporting boats. The driver really knew his stuff and was very detailed in loading. I felt very confident that boat would arrive safely. Good communication and fair rates. I would highly recommend if them to anyone who needs to move a boat.

I was very pleased with the professionalism, price, and service from Yacht Trucking when they moved my 51’ Bluewater Coastal Cruiser from Marathon in the Florida Keys north to Pensacola.  I would definitely hire them again!

Exceptional customer service with top-notch loadmasters that were especially careful when loading my motor cruiser onto the cradle and ship. I have moved my boat across the Atlantic 3 times and this was by far my best experience. I would highly recommend Yacht Trucking to anyone shipping their yacht across the Atlantic or the World and will use them again when the need arises.

Yacht Trucking relocated my 40′ trawler from Maine to Kentucky and the transport could not have gone any better. Getting out of the New England States is always a challenge with oversize loads and they worked hard during planning to have the necessary permits and routes without overspending. The driver kept me updated throughout the each day with texts, pics and phone calls as needed to show how the trip was going. Their equipment is first-rate. Highly recommended service.

Great Affordable Service – they just finished moving my 45′ Sea Ray from Miami to San Diego – very reasonable cost – ahead of schedule delivery – no damage – no extras – Great to find that SERVICE WITH A SMILE (my smile ) is still available in the US. Would highly recommend these guys to move a boat for anyone in need.

The Average Cost Of Shipping A Boat

Shipping a boat, whether it’s for a relocation, sale, or vacation, involves several considerations, with cost being a significant factor. Understanding the average cost of shipping a boat can help you plan and budget effectively.

In this article, we’ll delve into the various factors influencing boat shipping costs and provide estimated prices to give you a clearer picture. Knowing the average cost can help you budget effectively and avoid any surprises during the process.

Factors Influencing Boat Shipping Costs

Several factors come into play when it comes to shipping a boat as outlined by experts from A1AutoTransport , all of which contribute to its overall cost. For anyone considering moving their boat, it is necessary to understand these factors.

Let us examine some key considerations but feel free to give them a call at 1-888-245-1949 to get an actual quote.

Boat SizeEstimated Shipping Cost Range (Domestic)Estimated Shipping Cost Range (International)
Small Boats (Up to 20 feet)$1,000 – $3,000$3,000 – $8,000 or more
Medium-Sized Boats (20 to 40 feet)$2,000 – $5,000$5,000 – $15,000 or more
Large Boats (Over 40 feet)$5,000 and above$10,000 – $50,000 or more

Note: The estimated shipping costs are indicative and can vary based on specific factors such as distance, destination, boat specifications, and transportation method. It is advisable for boat owners to consider these factors and plan their budget accordingly.

1. Boat Size and Type

The size and type of your vessel will greatly determine how much it will cost you to ship it. Smaller vessels such as dinghies or small fishing boats are usually cheaper to move. When you go up to medium-sized boats like cabin cruisers and sport fishing boats and mainly big boats like yachts or luxury vessels, costs start going high.

These bigger ships require special carriers and also face more logistical issues making them more expensive. Some of these logistical aspects include getting permits and carefully planning how you will pass obstacles thus influencing the total transportation fees.

2. Distance and Location

Both distance and location where your boat is being moved play critical roles in determining the overall costs attached to its shipment. If a boat is being sent across the country or abroad then logistics become complicated thereby increasing the charges compared to local domestic shipping services.

The geographical features concerning pickup and delivery points are vital; remote or less accessible points may lead to higher transportation expenses. Such cases may call for specialized equipment or additional resources thereby complicating the process of moving hence affecting how much you will end up spending on your shipment.

3. Transportation Method

The method of transport chosen significantly determines how much it will cost you to have your boat shipped. Often, overland transport is more affordable for shorter distances because it involves driving. The choice to be made on the other side of the continent will involve such things as shipping lines, routes and rates.

Also, the prices are affected by whether you choose between open and closed transportation. Despite its low price, open transport exposes your boat to harsh weather conditions during shipping. But enclosed transport costs more due to added security and climate control for your valuable vessel.

Various Modes of transporting a Boat

When considering the overland transport of your boat, the prices are generally in line with the previously mentioned rates. In such cases, the transportation company might employ a single vehicle for towing or utilize a trailer based on the boat’s size. However, not all transportation routes may have a direct and easily navigable land passage.

In these instances, an alternative approach involves placing your boat on a larger vessel and opting for a water route, which can sometimes be a faster alternative to land transport. Common methods for this include keeping the boat on a trailer, utilizing an enclosed container, or employing flat racks. It’s worth noting that enclosed containers and customized flat trays may incur higher costs, tailored to meet the specific requirements of your boat.

The choice of water route can also influence the overall cost. Opting for a predefined course might lead to delivery delays due to factors like weather and unforeseen incidents. On the other hand, customizing the route could significantly increase expenses, balancing the need for a tailored journey against potential higher costs.

Estimated Costs for shipping a boat | Boat Transport cost

Having looked at the main concerns, let’s have a look at how much it would cost to ship a boat:

1. Small Boats (Up to 20 feet)

For smaller boats like dinghies or small fishing boats, domestic transport within a few hundred miles usually falls in the range of $1000-$3000. However for longer distances or international shipping, these costs can rise up to $3000-$8000 or even more.

Boat owners should consider their budget and transportation requirements before choosing appropriate options as there can be significant differences in terms of expenses depending on distance covered and type of shipment involved for small boats.

2. Medium-Sized Boats (20 to 40 feet)

Because of their larger size, shipping costs for mid-sized boats such as cabin cruisers and sport fishing vessels tend to be much higher. The domestic shipping of these boats may cost between $2,000 and $5,000 more because of the logistics involved. With international shipment, this may rise to between $5,000 and $15,000 or even more depending on the destination.

Transportation methods and associated expenses are also influenced by factors like a ship’s height or width since oversized boats would require specialized carriers and permits. These variables should be carefully considered by those owning medium-sized boats in order to calculate total shipping expenses accurately so that they can plan their budget accordingly.

3. Large Boats (Over 40 feet)

Shipping big yachts or luxury boats is expensive. Domestic transportation for big ships starts from about $5000 and can go up to over $15000 due to the problems caused by it. On the other hand, international freight charges on these large vessels could range from $10,000 up to$ 50,000 depending on the destination and specific criteria.

What is more is that it is very costly when one wants to transport bigger ships as they usually require special carriers and equipment among others which add significantly to the overall cost of transportation. Consequently boat owners with bigger ships must plan well before shipping them by looking at such factors ensuring they understand all costs involved in order to make rational choices that ensure safety and protection of their huge investments.

Additional Considerations for transporting your vessel or PWC

Other than the basic factors mentioned above as well as estimated costs there are several other factors that can affect your boat’s overall expense during shipping:

1. Preparation and Packaging

Ensuring your boat is adequately prepared and packaged for transport is a critical aspect of a successful shipping process. It goes beyond simply tacking it down for the trip; it requires careful attention to details. Some precautions include tying up loose items, removing any personal items, and protecting fragile parts that can be damaged during movement.

Although professional preparation services may attract additional charges, they help to facilitate smoother and safer transport. It is often wise to invest in appropriate preparation and packing since this can avert potential damages during transit so that by the time your boat reaches its destination point, it is still in the same condition as it was before departure.

These costs are worthwhile for ship owners looking for stress-free transportation because thorough preparation provides peace of mind and protection.

2. Insurance

Insurance is an important part of shipping a boat as it offers essential coverage for potential damages or losses that may occur during transportation. Although it affects the overall cost, its value cannot be ignored. The cost of insurance varies with factors such as the boat’s worth and kind of cover chosen.

To ensure sufficient protection for the owner’s valuable asset, it is important to understand well what these policies cover or don’t cover in order to make informed decisions about insurance terms and coverage.

Different insurance options may offer varying levels of coverage, and boat owners should assess their specific needs and the potential risks involved in the shipping process. With comprehensive insurance, one is not only financially secure but also has some peace knowing that their expensive maritime investment is protected.

DOT and FMCA Authorizations that they have?  The Department of Transportation ( DOT ) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ( FMCSA ) both regulate the transportation of boats. So, a good boat transport company “should” have all the necessary authorizations and licenses.

3. Custom Regulations and Fees

Navigating customs regulations and associated fees is pivotal in international ship transport. Import/export dues, duties and other government impositions may hugely build-up the overall cost hence it is crucial to understand these expenses and plan for them.

Attaining this knowledge takes expertise, which makes it important to work with experienced shipping experts for smooth operation.

While it may cost extra, engaging a customs broker may be very useful. These individuals are specifically trained on how to navigate through complicated paperwork, comply with regulations and make sure that there is no hold at the customs clearance stage.

The result is minimized delays that could be caused by errors and complications, which leads to a better international shipping experience. It is therefore clever for boat owners to ensure that they have entrusted their vessels to customs brokers in order to avoid complex procedures of customs adherence.

Average Interstate Boat Transport Cost (All Types & Lengths)

The cost of interstate boat transport varies depending on several factors, like the type and size of your boat, its length, the distance you need it transported, and the time of year. If you plan to move a boat from one state to another, by land or by water, from small recreational boats to large yachts, here's a breakdown of the costs for all types and lengths of boats.

Interstate shipping for sailboats, pontoons, and powerboats can cost as little as $150; for yachts, $1,500; for catamarans, $1,000; for canal or narrow boats, $250; for small boats, $50; for boats under 20 feet, $300; and for boats over 40 feet, $5,000.

As you plan to transport your boat, you may find the best price and services for your needs when you gather and compare quotes from different transporters. You could also benefit from discounts for multiple boat shipments or off-peak seasons.

  • On average, interstate boat transportation can cost between $600 and $15,000 for longer distances and between $150 and $350 for shorter trips.
  • For boats less than 20 feet long, expect to pay $1.50 to $3.00 per mile, while boats larger than 40 feet require approximately $4.50 to $6.50 per mile.
  • On average, boat transport costs per mile hover around $1.63.

There's a wide range of costs when it comes to different types of boats . Here are some quick numbers for you:

Types of Boats
Sailboats
Pontoons
Motorboats
Yachts
Catamarans
Canal or narrow boats
Small boats
Fishing boats
Cargo boats

These boats typically require specialized trailers and equipment to ensure that they are properly supported during transport. To ensure you get the best deal, it's a good idea to get quotes from different transporters to compare prices and services. Some companies may even offer discounts for multiple boat shipments or during off-peak seasons.

Transporting a sailboat

The cost may range from $150 to $15,000 . Sailboats are powered by wind and sails, and their lengths can vary significantly. You can find smaller sailboats at around 10 feet, while larger ones can reach up to 150 feet or more. They typically require specialized trailers and equipment to ensure that the mast and rigging are properly supported during transport .

Transporting pontoons

Pontoons are flat boats with lightweight structures, often used for leisure. They usually measure between 15 and 30 feet. As pontoons are relatively simple in design and lighter, transporting them may cost between $150 and $1,000 .

Interstate motorboat transportation

Transporting a motorboat will cost between $150 and $1,000 . Similar to sailboats, size and distance contribute to the variation in cost. Typically, heavier and more powerful motorboats require more resources, increasing the cost. These boats use engines for propulsion and come in various sizes, shapes, and designs. They typically range from 15 to 100 feet in length.

Yacht transportation can get quite pricey

The costs range from $1,500 to $100,000 . This wide price range arises due to the delicate features of yachts and their varying sizes, which lead to different transport needs. Yachts are luxurious and comfortable boats, ideal for longer journeys or living on board. Their lengths can vary from 30 to well over 100 feet. Larger yachts may require permits and escorts for transport on public roads.

Moving a catamaran

Catamarans have two hulls connected by a deck or bridge, offering more stability on the water. These boats can range between 16 and 65 feet in length. Moving a catamaran can cost between $1,000 and $20,000 , depending on the size and distance traveled.

Cost to transport narrow boats

Canal and narrow boats are designed for navigating shallow waters and narrow canals, usually measuring between 30 and 70 feet long. The cost of transporting one may range from $250 to $800 .

Transport cost of small boats

Small boats include kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and inflatables. These boats typically measure between 8 and 20 feet in length. They can typically be transported on standard trailers or roof racks. These boats are lighter and smaller, so transporting them is generally more manageable and less expensive. Their transport costs can range between $50 and $500 .

Transportation of fishing boats

The cost falls within the range of $150 to $1,000 . Factors influencing the cost include the size of the boat, the distance to travel, and specific transport requirements.

Transporting cargo boats

The cost varies depending on factors like boat size, distance, and cargo-related requirements. As a rough estimate, the cost to transport a cargo boat interstate can range from $5,000 to $50,000 or more. This cost includes the use of specialized trailers and equipment, as well as any necessary permits and insurance coverage.

On average, transporting a boat less than 20 feet long costs $1.50 to $3.00 per mile, while boats larger than 40 feet require approximately $4.50 to $6.50 per mile. As your boat's size increases, the cost to move it also increases. Be sure to accurately measure the length of your boat to get a more precise cost estimate for the transport.

Here is a general breakdown of the cost based on boat length:

Boat Length Interstate Boat Transport Cost
Under 20 feet
20 to 40 feet
Over 40 feet

Distance you need to move your boat

Generally, the farther the distance, the higher the cost. However, keep in mind that for longer trips, the per-mile rate might decrease. This factor is usually determined by the transport company you choose, so it's crucial to get multiple quotes and compare the prices to find the best deal for your specific needs.

transport sailboat cost

To estimate the cost for your specific boat, simply multiply the number of miles in your trip by the value based on the size of your boat. For example, if your boat measures 10 feet and you need to transport it 500 miles with costs per mile of $2.25 to $3.25, the cost would be:

500 miles * $2.25 = $1,125 (minimum) 500 miles * $3.25 = $1,625 (maximum)

These are just estimates, and your actual cost may be different based on factors like the time of year and company you choose. Be sure to research and compare prices from different boat hauling services to get the most accurate and competitive pricing for your specific needs.

Time of year to transport your boat

During peak season, higher demand typically results in increased prices. Conversely, choosing to move your boat during the off season may help you save money and avoid potential delays. Keep flexibility in your schedule to take advantage of the best rates and ensure a smooth transportation process.

Time of Year
Peak season (May to September)
Off-peak season (October to April)

Generally, peak season for boat transport is during the warmer months of the year, from May to September, when more people are using their boats for recreational purposes. Off-peak season is typically during the colder months of the year, from October to April.

Additional Fees Interstate Boat Transport Cost
Insurance costs
Crane fees
Port charges
Permits
Special equipment requirements
  • Insurance costs : Boat transport companies typically offer insurance coverage for your boat during transport, but the cost of insurance can vary depending on the value of your boat and the level of coverage you choose. It's important to carefully review the insurance policy offered by the transport company to ensure that it meets your needs and provides adequate protection for your boat.
As a rough estimate, insurance costs can range from 1% to 3% of the value of your boat. For example, if your boat is worth $50,000, insurance costs could range from $500 to $1,500.

Crane fees : If your boat is too large or heavy to be loaded onto the trailer by hand, a crane may be required to lift it onto the trailer. The cost of crane services can vary depending on the size and weight of your boat, as well as the location of the loading and unloading points.

Port charges : If your boat needs to be transported by sea, you may incur additional port charges, such as dockage fees, wharfage fees, and terminal handling charges. The cost of these charges can vary depending on the size of your boat and the port of departure and arrival.

Permits : Depending on the size and weight of your boat, you may need to obtain permits from state and local authorities to transport it on public roads. The cost of permits can vary depending on the size and weight of your boat, as well as the number of permits required.

Special equipment requirements : If your boat has special equipment requirements, such as a cradle or custom trailer, the cost of transport may be higher. The cost of special equipment can vary widely depending on the type of equipment required and the size and weight of your boat.

transport sailboat cost

When it comes to interstate boat transport, there are a few tips that can help lower your costs and make the process more budget-friendly. Here are some strategies to consider:

Be flexible with your timeline : Transport companies often charge less when they have more time to accommodate your request. If you're able to be flexible with your pick-up and delivery dates, you may be able to secure a lower price.

Choose the right type of transport : The cost of boat transportation can depend on the type of transport used. Overland transport with a tow-behind trailer is generally cheaper than yacht or ship transport. Evaluate your options and choose the most cost-effective method that still meets your needs.

Get multiple quotes : Reach out to several boat transport companies to obtain quotes, as prices can significantly vary depending on factors like location and boat size. Use websites like Nexus Auto Transport or Town and Tourist to compare services and prices. This can greatly increase your chances of finding a company that fits your budget.

Measure your boat accurately : Providing accurate dimensions of your boat is crucial for getting an accurate quote. If your boat is found to be larger than reported, your costs may increase due to additional permits or equipment needed for transport. So, always make sure to take accurate measurements of your boat's length, width, and height.

Prepare your boat for transport : Properly preparing your boat for transport can reduce the risk of damage, potentially saving you money on repairs or insurance claims. Make sure to secure any loose items, drain fuel and water tanks, and follow any specific guidelines provided by your chosen transport company.

By following these tips, you can better manage your interstate boat transport costs and ensure a safer, more cost-effective transportation experience for your boat.

transport sailboat cost

The key factors that affect the price usually include the size and type of your boat, the distance of the move, and the seasonality of the transport industry. As a rule of thumb, longer boats require higher transport costs, so it's essential to have an estimate of boat length before contacting transport providers.

As you go through the quotes, remember to pay attention not only to the total amount but also to how it is broken down. Some transport companies may charge you additional fees, such as for permits, special handling, or fuel. Ask for a detailed breakdown of costs to ensure you're not missing any hidden charges. You can also try comparing quotes from multiple transport providers, such as this one, to ensure you're getting a fair deal for the service you need.

When reviewing the contract, be mindful of the following key points:

  • Pickup and delivery dates : Make sure the dates are clearly stated and align with your preferences. It's crucial to be present for both processes to ensure proper handling of your boat.
  • Insurance coverage : Verify the transport company's insurance policy as well as your own to ensure adequate coverage during transit.
  • Liability : Ensure that you understand the limits of the transporter's liability. This can help you stay prepared for any potential damage that might occur.

As a sailboat owner, transporting your boat can seem like a daunting task, with numerous risks involved, such as damage during transit and weather conditions. However, with the right preparation and partner, boat transport can be done safely and with peace of mind. Here’s a guide to help you transport your sailboat safely and efficiently.

Prepare Your Sailboat

Before wondering how to safely transport a sailboat , it’s important to take precautions to prevent any damage during transit. Properly protect the mast and rigging with padded sleeves to prevent scratches or dents. Remove any loose items and sails that might shift during transport. This will help ensure your sailboat arrives in the same condition in which it left.

CitizenShipper is a transportation marketplace that connects people with professional, insured, and background-checked transporters specializing in boat transport. Their network of experienced boat transporters will ensure that your sailboat is transported safely and securely.

Choose the Right Type of Transport

Two main options are overland or sea transport. Overland transport, such as trucking or rail, is usually less expensive and faster than sea transport, which is typically used for larger boats. Consider your sailboat’s size and destination when choosing the right type of transport.

Check Insurance

Insurance is a critical aspect of boat transport. Check your insurance policy to see if it covers transport. Many boat insurance policies cover transportation, but confirming this with your insurance provider beforehand is important. Additionally, all reputable boat transport companies are required to have insurance to cover any damages or losses that might occur during transport.

Prepare for weather conditions. Be prepared for weather conditions during transit. If transporting your sailboat during winter, make sure to winterize your sailboat before transport to protect it from the cold. If transporting during hurricane season, be prepared for delays or cancellations in the event of a storm.

They can also be transported across oceans by hiring a captain and crew. The costs of transport vary depending on the size and type of boat; check out the best prices by CitizenShipper .

Transporting a sailboat requires careful planning and attention to detail. You are responsible for maintaining the trailer and driving safely as the owner. International logistics also need to be organized to ensure a smooth process. In this article, we will discuss how to simplify the transportation process.

How to Safely Transport a Sailboat

Cost to transport a sailboat.

The cost of sailboat transport can vary greatly depending on the size of the boat. Small sailboat transportation is cheaper.

Transporting a sailboat can be accomplished through various methods, and finding the most cost-effective approach may not be immediately apparent. Depending on the boat, it may be more economically viable to use a specially-crafted yacht transport vessel or to enlist a delivery crew. Thoroughly researching all available options and soliciting multiple quotes can result in substantial savings in transportation, delivery, and insurance expenses incurred in safeguarding your vessel against harm.

The ideal method of transport for a sailboat depends on its size and dry weight. The following are the prevailing means of transporting sailboats over both brief and lengthy distances:

Some sailboats can be towed by typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed. Larger sailboats usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV.

Pickup trucks that run on gasoline and have a weight capacity of half a ton can be effective for lighter sailboats as long as the dry weight of the vessel does not surpass the vehicle’s towing capability.

The sailboat’s mast, boom, and standing rigging should be secured regardless of its size, and you may need to collapse or remove them.

The majority of trailer sailers can be transported by single-rear-wheel trucks with a weight capacity of half-ton or 3/4-ton. However, bigger sailboats may necessitate a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck, a configuration frequently observed with 3/4-ton or 1-ton trucks with dual rear wheels.

Rules for Towing in the United States

The rules of the road for towing are clear. With a standard driver’s license, the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet, and the maximum length of a trailer surface is 53 feet.

A class C trailer has a maximum width of 8 feet and 6 inches, taking into account any articles attached to the trailer. The regulations mean that your boat’s beam cannot exceed about 8 feet.

Holders of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are eligible to tow significantly larger trailers and operate semi-trucks. This makes it possible to transport some larger sailboats with greater beam width via this method, provided they remain within the maximum height limit.

The height criteria for trailers fluctuate between 13 feet and 6 inches to 14 feet, contingent upon the area. The measurement is taken from the ground to the highest point of the object on the trailer.

If you are towing a boat with a full keel, it is essential to plan your route carefully, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are shorter than 13 feet.

In general, it is advisable to entrust the transportation of larger sailboats to skilled towing professionals. Accomplished drivers with ample experience in operating massive rigs and holding commercial licenses can safely transport quite substantial vessels, albeit at a cost. The primary benefit of engaging the services of a professional provider is the transfer of risk from your hands to theirs, thereby ensuring peace of mind.

Yacht shipping versus yacht delivery under sail – which method really costs more and why?

Will Bruton

  • Will Bruton
  • June 11, 2017

Depending on the size of your yacht and the distance between ports, the difference in price between yacht delivery and yacht shipping may be smaller than you think.

transport sailboat cost

A transocean passage can be a cruising delight, but it can also represent a logistical challenge. Owners who are constrained by time through work and family commitments, or who need to have their boat in a certain place at a set time, be it for a regatta or a charter, may not be able to sail their own yacht to its next destination.

Over the past ten years the business of moving yachts has seen significant developments. Several delivery companies now offer the services of qualified crew, 24-hour engineering support and satellite tracking as standard. In parallel, global yacht shipping has expanded vastly, resulting in faster deliveries and more destinations covered.

What is the difference in price between yacht delivery by sail and yacht shipping? We requested a quote to move a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44DS with a value of ÂŁ250,000 from Antigua to Palma following the 2017 ARC. By ship: we were quoted ÂŁ12,900 , including insurance and cradle rental. However, the shipment offered was later than the departure date we initially requested. By sail: quoted ÂŁ8,500, not including fuel (estimated at ÂŁ1,400), marina fees (est. ÂŁ250), and return flights for three crew to UK (est. ÂŁ1,800) giving a total of ÂŁ11,950 .

Jeremy Wyatt, director of World Cruising Club, sees many yachts moved by both methods following events like the ARC.

“In general there are two types of cruisers, the ‘traditional’ liveaboards who will cruise the Caribbean then sail home to Europe or the US. More recently, though, we have seen more time-poor sailors, usually because they have not retired or are not able to spend extended periods sailing,” he comments.

“These are the owners who would be expected to ship back home. The convenience to them is not needing to spend six weeks preparing and sailing a boat back via the Azores and [that convenience] outweighs the cost of shipping.

“There is also the argument that shipping saves wear and tear, which is a hidden cost of sailing it back. Some boats, particularly catamarans, are also not really suited to the North Atlantic route back to Europe.”

Trusted hands

Engaging a delivery company involves putting a valuable asset in the hands of a skipper and crew you have probably never met. So how do you decide if they are up to the job?

transport sailboat cost

Simon Weeks is a freelance delivery skipper, based in Hamble, UK, who sails worldwide. “As a minimum, I would always ask for a skipper’s CV, verifiable references, and some contact well in advance of the trip,” he recommends.

Pete Green, owner of Halcyon Yacht Delivery, has developed clear criteria for both skippers and crew. “We run with a minimum of three crew on short and medium trips and four crew on transocean deliveries,” he comments.

“Our minimum skipper qualification is RYA Yachtmaster Ocean with lots of previous experience. In terms of crew, on medium to long trips we insist that one of the two crew must be a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and, on shorter trips, a Yachtmaster Coastal. The third crew member must have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience.

“Anyone going on a Halcyon delivery has to supply two referees who are followed up, plus either a face to face or telephone interview during which a short theory exam is undertaken to assess the extent of the crew’s knowledge.”

It is perhaps not surprising that, in a market where margins have been squeezed in recent years, not all yacht deliveries go to plan. “There are certainly some cowboys out there,” comments Weeks. “We pick up numerous deliveries every year from owners that have been let down.”

“There was one yacht we delivered from Spain to the UK that had been left by another skipper who decided he didn’t want to finish the trip. We were given a list of defects that the previous skipper had identified.”

“We were prepared for some maintenance before setting off but were surprised to discover that the yacht was absolutely fine. It turned out the list had been created so that the skipper could justify going home early.”

How yacht delivery companies operate has also been publicly called into question on several occasions. Many operations rely on unpaid volunteer crew keen to build their experience, a practice that not everyone in the industry supports.

There have also been reports of skippers pressured to sail into unsuitable conditions. In 2012, Farnborough-based Reliance Yacht Management was successfully sued for negligence after the deaths of a delivery skipper and two crew.

The wear and tear inflicted on a yacht on a delivery passage is a major consideration. With brand new yachts, the job becomes particularly involved, explains Green.

“It’s always a challenge to deliver a brand new yacht thousands of miles in perfect condition. We spend time bubble-wrapping every inch of the interior to protect it. Also, we don’t use certain items, including the oven, and we put foil on the top of the hob to make sure it is protected.”

“On the exterior, we check all fixtures and fittings before setting off to make sure blocks are secure, winches have been tightened to the deck sufficiently, and sails have been bent on correctly. Lifejackets and harnesses stay on deck to avoid scratching the interior.”

At the other end of the scale, some yachts being delivered haven’t been sailed in years. “It can be a tricky issue,” comments Green.

“Nearly all delivery companies and skippers specify minimum levels of equipment as part of the contract, but boat condition can be more problematic. Contact will be made with the owner beforehand to establish the yacht’s age and whether there has been a recent survey, but this only gives half the picture. My checklist includes all the seacocks, the rig, engine and much more.”

Shipping routes

Shipping yachts has become an increasingly popular option for many owners in recent years. It’s an appealing prospect, largely due to the inherent predictability of an operation that relies on big ships that can handle all but the worst weather with ease.

transport sailboat cost

Shipping companies increasingly charter purpose-built vessels that speed up the operation further.

“It’s possible to ship with the mast left up, the shore power connected and crane the boat straight into the water at the other end,” explains Josh Flavell, a former delivery skipper who now works for Peters & May.

The list of destinations covered has also grown. “Whilst routes used to be dictated by the traditional yachting seasons and its major events, such as the ARC, today we are delivering to some of the world’s remote cruising grounds as well. Alaska and Tahiti are two of the more far-flung places we sailed last year,” reports Sander Shuurman from Sevenstar Yacht Transport.

The Oyster Yachts team in Palma manages many yacht handovers to and from shipping companies on behalf of owners. “It’s a very popular option,” explains Mark Durham, Oyster Palma’s operations manager.

“Although the shipping fees appear higher than the professional delivery companies, higher wear and tear heading east across the Atlantic means many are choosing what is a much more predictable option.

“There are some downsides. One is [to do with] the vagaries of loading dates. It can lead to multiple rescheduling, both of the loading and offloading team’s plans, and of course the planned program after arrival.

“Although the passage time will almost always be shorter than the own-hull sailing time, the additional costs incurred at each end due to delays can add substantially to the basic charges, so they should always be budgeted for as well.”

Whilst yachts won’t incur sail or motor maintenance issues, Hamish Burgess-Simpson, project manager from Oyster, warns that shipped yachts can arrive “truly filthy”, depending on their loaded position on deck.

“The dirt washes off the topsides with a bit of effort, but it can be permanently ingrained in the canvas work,” he adds. This dirt, generated largely by the ship’s stacks, can be mostly avoided by ensuring your yacht is placed forward of the exhaust system, but it’s still advisable to stow all canvas.

The price of moving a boat, whether by ship or delivery crew, can be hard to estimate. “In recent years the bottom line for owners has become increasingly price driven, so we try to provide quotes that include all of the major expenses, including cradle hire and insurance whilst the boat is in our hands,” says Josh Flavell from Peters & May.

“Our costs vary quite significantly. If we are utilising a scheduled ‘liner’ service, then the cost can be higher as the ship sails whether it is full or not.

“However, where we are using a chartered service ship, [which accounts for] about 70 per cent of our shipping, we can often offer a much lower price.”

Despite an ever-increasing choice of routes, some destinations will always require a delivery crew, or a combination of shipping and delivery. “We recently delivered a yacht to her owner’s private island in the Western Isles,” says Pete Green of Halcyon Yacht Delivery.

Hidden costs of yacht delivery and yacht shipping

Both shipping and sailing a yacht can potentially incur hidden costs:

  • Cradle hire: yachts being shipped are secured to the deck in cradles. Whilst you may own one, it may not be suitable for shipping. If it is, there will also be an additional cost of shipping the cradle itself or storing it ashore.
  • Insurance: many shipping companies include insurance from when the yacht goes into the ship’s crane to when it comes out, but not all – check with your insurer in advance.
  • Berthing: ships are delayed sometimes, particularly due to loading and unloading.
  • Satellite communications: one owner we spoke to reported a satellite phone bill in excess of ÂŁ15,000 following a transatlantic delivery. The data connection had been left open by accident by the delivery skipper. If allowing use of your own satellite communication equipment, agree terms in advance in writing.
  • Wear and tear: on long passages, particularly heading into prevailing weather systems, some wear and tear on equipment should be expected. Consider timing of cosmetic work to the yacht carefully and ensure running gear works freely before handing over to a delivery company.
  • Insurance: again, check your policy. Your insurer may specify requirements for the delivery which may go beyond the skipper’s qualifications. Crew may also need to meet certain requirements.

  • How Much Does It Cost To Transport A Sailboat
  • Information Center

Transporting a sailboat is no small task, and understanding the associated expenses is crucial for anyone planning such a venture. The price isn’t arbitrary; numerous elements come into play, from the method of transport to the size of your sailboat, and each can significantly impact the final cost. Awareness of these expenses can help you budget effectively, avoid unpleasant surprises, and ensure that your sailboat reaches its destination safely and in prime condition.

This guide aims to thoroughly understand ‘How Much To Transport A Sailboat’ and the many factors that influence the final cost. We’ll go through each element in detail, providing practical bits of advice to guide you through the complexities of boat transport. So, whether you’re contemplating a move across the country or planning an international sailing adventure, you’ll have all the information you need in this detailed guide on how much does it cost to transport a sailboat to make an informed decision about your sailboat transport.

Sailboat Transport Options Compared:

Self-towing.

Venturing into self-towing? It’s a practical option, but it’s essential to understand the towing requirements based on the size of your sailboat. For instance, boats under 2.59 meters wide can usually be towed by standard vehicles, whereas larger vessels may require special permits or even a professional trucking service. Furthermore, your trailer and vehicle must meet certain specifications. Your trailer should be robust, equipped with a winch, lights, and brakes, while your towing vehicle needs to have sufficient horsepower and torque to haul the boat safely. Preparing and securing the sailboat is another critical step - the boat should be weatherproofed and strapped securely to the trailer to prevent movement or damage during transit. On the price front, the total can vary depending on factors like distance, the size of the boat, the rental expenses for a tow truck or trailer, and gas expenditures.

Professional Towing Services

If self-towing seems challenging, professional towing services might be the answer. There are numerous benefits to hiring professional towers for boat transport. They offer expertise, efficiency, and - significantly - insurance coverage and protection for your prized vessel. However, they can only move your boat to shorter distances like within your city or to a nearby city. If your destination requires boat crane services, the professionals can arrange these, ensuring a seamless process from start to finish. The price of professional towing can be steep. For example, towing a 30-foot sailboat to 100 miles can cost anywhere between $500 and $800, which depends on the distance. Still, considering the peace of mind you’ll have to know that your boat is safe, many view this as a worthy investment.

Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship for International Moves

For those pondering how much does it cost to transport a boat internationally, cargo ship transport might be the way to go. This process typically involves hiring an agent to handle all the shipping arrangements. They’ll handle the logistics, including transporting your boat to the shipping yard and arranging for it to be loaded onto the cargo ship. Be prepared for additional expenses like insurance, customs, taxes, and import fees. Once your boat reaches its destination, unloading, and transportation to a marina will be required. Estimating the price of this type of transport can be tricky, but you can expect prices to start from around $2,000 for a 30-foot boat and go up depending on distance, time of year, and additional services.

Hiring Auto Transporter for National Road Moves

When considering how much does it cost to transport a boat across the country, hiring an auto transporter can be the most convenient option. These companies specialize in long distance boat transport and will ensure your sailboat is prepared adequately for the journey. They’ll drain all fluids, remove any loose items, and properly secure the boat for transport. The boat transport cost can vary based on your boat’s distance and size. For example, the price to ship a boat for short distances (500-1000 miles) can range from $1 to $2 per mile, while longer distances (1,500 to 2,500 miles) can cost between $0.75 to $1 per mile. Ultimately, the choice between self-towing, professional towing, cargo ship transport, and auto transporting will depend on your budget, distance, and personal preference.

How Boat Transport Cost Per Mile is Calculated?

In boat transport, a combination of variables determines the price per mile. One of the primary factors is the size of the boat. For example, houseboat transport expenses may differ from a yacht even if the total distance remains the same. This is primarily due to the disparity in size between the two types of boats.

The boat’s dimensions, width, and height significantly influence the boat transport cost. Bigger boats often demand specialized equipment or handling, increasing the price. Furthermore, the boat’s point of origin or the location from where it is being shipped can also impact the price. The base rate per mile might fluctuate based on the shipment’s origin.

To ascertain your boat’s size, you’ll need to measure its length, height, and beam width:

  • Length: Measure from the bow’s tip to the stern’s center along a stern line.
  • Height: Measure from the boat’s highest point to the base of the keel, ensuring the highest point is non-removable.
  • Beam Width: Measure the widest part of your boat, typically mid-ship.

Once you have these dimensions, you can provide them to the auto shipping company to acquire precise boat shipping rates.

Now, to give you an idea of how to calculate expenses on your own: boat transport expenses usually range between $2.5 and $3.5 per mile for a boat with a beam width of 12 feet. Smaller boats generally cost less to transport. For instance, if you’re shipping a 12-foot yacht from the East Coast to the West Coast over a distance of 2,500 miles, and the base rate is $3 per mile, the price to transport a boat like this would be (2,500 miles x $3) = $7,500.

So, the question, “How Much Does It Cost To Transport a boat?” is not straightforward to answer as it depends on numerous factors. Keep in mind the variables involved. Each aspect is crucial in determining the boat transport cost, from the boat’s size and dimensions to the distance covered. Here are some examples of how much to transport a sailboat from the east coast to the west coast:

Boat Transport Case Studies and Cost Estimates of Moving 40’ Sailboat

We’ll kick off with the Per Mile Cost for different sizes. For instance, the price of transporting a 40ft boat per mile would fall from $9.50 to $10.50. If you own a 35ft boat, the per-mile cost would be slightly less - roughly between $8.25 and $9.25. For those with a 30ft boat, the per-mile price would be more affordable, between $7.00 and $8.00.

Moving on to some real-life boat transport case studies:

Let’s start with a 30ft sailboat transport.

  • If you plan boat transport for a short distance, say, 100 miles, expect to shell out between $700 to $800.
  • For a 200 miles journey, the price doubles, i.e., $1400 to $1600.
  • If the distance is 400 miles, you must budget between $2800 to $3200.
  • the price further escalates from $4900 to $5600 for 700 miles
  • For 900 miles, expect to shell out $6300 to $7200 on boat transport.

If you’re doing a 35ft sailboat transport:

  • the price for 100 miles would be between $825 to $925.
  • For 200 miles, the price would be $1650 to $1850
  • For 400 miles, moving can cost $3300 to $3700.
  • For longer distances like 700 miles, it would cost you between $5775 to $6475
  • For 900 miles, the expense would range from $7425 to $8325.

For a 40ft sailboat transport:

  • the price for 100 miles would be between $950 to $1050.
  • For 200 miles, the price would be $1900 to $2100
  • As for 400 miles, expect to pay $3800 to $4200.
  • For 700 miles, you should budget between $6650 to $7350
  • For 900 miles, the price would be between $8550 to $9450.

However, it’s important to note that these are just rough estimates. The actual price of boat transport can fluctuate based on several factors.

For instance, you may have to pay additional taxes, oversize fees, and permits. Also, loading and unloading using specialized equipment like cranes, equipment to secure the boat in place, etc., could add to your overall boat transport expenses.

Tip: For long-distance boat transportation, if the distance is over 1,000 miles, it might be more economical to consider selling your current boat. Add the thousands of dollars it would’ve taken to transport it to the money from the sale and buy a new boat from a local dealer at the destination.

Remember, the conditions, sizes, weights of boats, transport distances, and state laws vary greatly. So, don’t hesitate to contact us for a customized quote that fits your specific needs.

Preparation for Sailboat Transport

Boat preparation responsibilities of owners.

Owners are tasked with getting the boat ready for transport, ensuring that every part is appropriately secured and the boat is cleaned and emptied of all excess materials.

This protects the boat during transport and aids in maintaining its value. The responsibility also falls on the owner to ensure that all hatches and windows are securely closed and that all water tanks are adequately drained.

Moreover, the owner must disconnect all batteries to avoid unnecessary electrical drains during transport. These are crucial responsibilities that every owner must undertake to ensure safe and efficient boat transport.

Recommended Boat Preparation Steps

  • Photographing for Reference: One of the most recommended steps in boat transport preparation involves capturing detailed photographs of the boat. This serves as a reference for reassembly and helps to prevent oversight of any damages during reassembly. It is a crucial step in understanding ‘How Much To Transport A Sailboat’ as it helps protect you from potential disputes and misunderstandings.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Cleaning the boat’s exterior before transport helps maintain the boat’s appearance during transit. This is beneficial for both the boat owner and the transport company as it enables easier handling and can reduce the price of transport.
  • Securing Loose Gear: It’s essential to stow loose gear securely, both above and below the deck. This prevents damage to the equipment and the boat during transport. It’s a small but vital step in the process of boat transport.

Additional Preparations:

  • Hatch and Window Closure: Closing and locking boat hatches provide added security during transport. Additionally, tightly shut cabin windows prevent potential water or wind damage.
  • Water Tank Draining: Emptying all water tanks on the boat prevents sloshing or leakage during shipment, which could cause damage or create unnecessary weight, impacting the transport cost.
  • Battery Disconnection: Disconnecting all batteries before transport helps prevent any electrical drain that might cause battery depletion during transit.
  • Cable Securement: Securing all cables is crucial to avoid tangling or damage, thereby maintaining cable integrity during the journey. This step can save significant time and effort during the reassembly process post-transport.

Parting Words:

It’s important to remember that the price of boat transport, particularly sailboat transport, can vary significantly based on many factors. Sailboat size, transport distance, route complexity, and additional required services are significant in the final quote. For instance, a small sailboat transported over a short distance on a straightforward route would typically cost less than a larger sailboat transported over a long distance or on a complex route.

With boat transport, there are also additional expenses to consider. These could include fees for special permits and escorts, expenses associated with preparing your sailboat for transportation, or even insurance premiums. Every boat transport company has its pricing structure and might offer different services. For instance, Easy Auto Ship includes insurance coverage in its quotes, but other companies might charge extra.

Here’s a quick recap of the factors affecting the price of boat transport:

  • Sailboat size: Bigger boats require more transportation resources, which increases the price.
  • Transport distance: Longer distances mean more fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle, hence higher expenses.
  • Route complexity: Routes with challenging terrains, narrow roads, or high-traffic areas increase the job’s complexity and, thus, the price.
  • Additional services: Special services like shrink-wrapping or winterizing your sailboat will add to the total cost.

So, How Much Does It Cost To Transport A Sailboat? There’s no single answer to that question. the price can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on variables we discussed above. We advise getting quotes from a few reliable boat transport companies and comparing them carefully, considering not just the price but also what’s included in the service.

Remember, the cheapest quote might not necessarily be the best option if it doesn’t cover all your needs. Quality and reliability of service should be key considerations when choosing a boat transport company.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Young woman killed by boat propeller near Harvey Cedars, New Jersey

By Alexandra Simon

Updated on: August 27, 2024 / 7:00 AM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

HARVEY CEDARS, N.J. (CBS) -- A young woman died over the weekend after she was hit by a boat propeller off of Long Beach Island, New Jersey State Police said Monday.

According to the department, 18-year-old Zeina Mahafzah, of Wayne, New Jersey, was on a raft being pulled by a boat on Sunday, Aug. 25 when she was hit by the propeller as she tried to get back on the vessel.

NJ State Police said she suffered "fatal injuries" as a result of the impact, which happened just off Sunset Park in the Harvey Cedars Borough.

On Monday, the Harvey Cedars Police Department said on Facebook  they were working with New Jersey State Police on the investigation, and asked people to "keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers."

The fatal incident remains under investigation, according to NJ State Police.

Going away for Labor Day weekend? Here's when you should hit the road in North Jersey

3-minute read.

Portrait of Daniel Munoz

Less than a week of summer remains before kids head back to school. There’s just a few days left to soak up the sun at the Jersey Shore or enjoy some quality barbecue time with families. Labor Day weekend is upon us.

Travel experts predict the highways, beaches and airports in New Jersey and across the nation will be swamped over the holiday weekend with families trying to squeeze out that last bit of summer.

For example, the federal Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 17 million passengers between Thursday and next Wednesday, which would set a record for Labor Day weekend.

“People are traveling more than ever this summer,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.

Friday will be the busiest day, with 2.86 million passengers expected to pass through airports across the nation, the TSA said.

Airfare has become cheaper in recent months compared to last summer, according to the federal Consumer Price Index .

Car rental costs are down, travel within the U.S. is high

Meanwhile, AAA estimated that domestic car rentals cost 16% less than last year, perhaps enticing even more people onto the roads.

"Americans see the extended Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to say farewell to summer with one final trip,” said AAA’s vice president for travel, Debbie Haas.

"Since many kids are already back in school, regional road trips tend to be the most popular option for families."

Bookings for domestic travel are up 9% over last year, according to travel club AAA, while international bookings are down 4% from last year.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark Liberty International Airport, the George Washington Bridge, and Lincoln and Holland tunnels, expects 6.7 million travelers to use the airports and river crossings between Thursday and next Tuesday.

That’s about 3% higher than in 2023 and 8% higher than 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically curtailed international and domestic travel.

How much will NJ gas cost for Labor Day weekend?

According to AAA data, the average cost of a gallon of gas in New Jersey was $3.25 on Tuesday — down from $3.29 a week ago and $3.39 last month — only adding to the temptation to hit the road this weekend.

Prices are only expected to go down, with the possibility of reaching below $3 a gallon in many parts of the country, especially after the switch to the cheaper winter blend of gas on Sept. 16, said Patrick De Haan, head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.

Gas prices have been aided by fewer heat waves and a calmer hurricane season, which translated to fewer disruptions of refinery activity in the South, including Louisiana and Texas, De Haan said.

“"It’s been a great summer for motorists to hit the road,” De Haan said.

This is the worst time to travel on Labor Day weekend. When to go instead

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are expected to be the worst days, “especially as commuters mix with travelers on the weekdays,” AAA said.

Between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday will be the worst travel times, AAA said, as will 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

How to get through TSA quickly at the airport

  • Arrive early, even if your flight is domestic. TSA recommends you get to the airport two hours before your flight to give yourself enough time to get to the gate. For international flights, three hours should do.
  • Have your stuff properly packed. Save precious time by making sure your liquids are the right amounts — that's no more than 3.4 ounces if you forgot — and kept in a clear plastic bag . If you're bringing breast milk , powdered formula, sippy cups or liquid or cream medication, that should be separated and placed in its own bin at security. It's also recommended that medicine is kept in its original, marked container
  • Most importantly, be patient — and be nice
