Silent 100 Explorer first look: Electric powercat pioneer to build €19m superyacht
- Electric boats
- Top stories
Solar powered catamaran builder, Silent Yachts, has started work on its largest yacht to date – a solar-electric superyacht called the Silent 100 Explorer.
Designed by Marco Casali, this vast, plumb-bowed, all-composite model has an LOA of 101ft 8in (31m), a beam of 34ft 4in (10.46m) and a matching air draught of 34ft 4in (10.46m).
In all it provides 1,130ft² (105m²) of outdoor space and a volume close to 440GT, much the same living space as a 45-50m monohull superyach t.
The first Silent 100 Explorer will sport around 40kWp of photovoltaic panelling that will feed an 800kWh lithium-ion battery bank.

Electric boats: a-z of the 37 best all-electric models, recommended videos for you.
With twin 340kW brushless electric motors providing the thrust, a short-burst top speed of between 14-16 knots is predicted but it’s this electric boat ‘s ability to maintain a six-knot cruise almost indefinitely in full sunshine that will really appeal to owners.
Key features include a full-beam 550ft² (51m²) main-deck owner’s suite , complete with owner’s office and a private balcony.
There will also be three further ensuite guest cabins spread across the main deck plus another two and a gym positioned in the starboard hull.
A central spiral staircase connects the main lounge area aft with a sky-lounge above. A full-beam bridge is located on the upper deck with doors either side leading to the elevated bow and aft decks with their own lounging areas.
The crew complement will be seven to eight across four cabins. There’s a bridge-deck double and adjacent yacht office for the captain and three double-bunk crew cabins in the port hull, as well as the main galley, the crew mess and a crew tender garage .
There is also room for a 7.5m (24ft 6in) limo-tender in a main garage positioned between the hulls. Two of those solar roof sections will also open to reveal a sundeck that doubles as a touch-and-go helipad. Plus there’s a similarly covered smaller flybridge area up front.
The first Silent 100 Explorer is already under construction in Italy and should splash in late 2023. The ball-park price-tag is a cool €19 million, excluding taxes.

After unveiling a new flagship model, the Silent 100 Explorer, at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, Austrian-based Silent Yachts has already sold the first unit with a scheduled delivery in 2023.
“This new sale coming after the sale of three of our 80-foot models in rapid succession and confirms the market’s interest in the superior comfort of catamarans and solar energy for propulsion needs, as well as all the household appliances on board,” says Silent-Yachts founder and CEO, Michael Köhler.
Like all Silent yachts, the four-deck Silent 100 Explorer has a solar-electric drive train that preserves the purity of the ocean and embraces the sound of silence for enhanced guest comfort. Similar to the Silent 64 (the first ever solar powered production boat by Silent-Yachts to cross the Atlantic ocean in January 2018) and all other Silent models, also the Silent 100 Explorer is designed to have worldwide cruising capabilities.
The yacht measures 31 metres overall (101.7ft) with a beam of 13,62 metres (44.7ft) and a spectacular height of 10,46 metres (34,3ft). Renewable electric energy comes from an array of solar panels in the hardtop that slides apart to reveal a sundeck that can also serve as a touch-and-go helipad. Compared to the previous flagship, the Silent 80, the new Silent 100 Explorer has an extra deck and much more space both outdoors and indoors. For example, the master suite of the Silent 100 Explorer is 51 sq. m, while the same cabin of the Silent 80 is 27 sq. m. The aft outside areas’ comparison is 105 sq. m against 61 sq. m and so on.
Clean energy The solar cells provide up to 40kWp (kWp stands for kilowatt ‘peak’ power output of a system) and clean solar electrical energy is stored in a battery bank with a capacity of up to 800 kWh. Coupled to twin 340kW (@700 rpm) electric motors, the Silent 100 Explorer has an economic speed of 6-8 knots, a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 14-16 knots.
Two or three diesel generators, depending on the specification requested, provide back-up auxiliary power. Because the solar energy is completely renewable, in theory the Silent 100 Explorer has unlimited range, similar to all other SILENT models.
Space to spare Although the Silent 100 Explorer is just over 30 metres in length, it has a gross tonnage of 440GT with outdoor and indoor living space that are equivalent to a monohull motoryacht of between 40-50 metres.
This abundance of space typical for multihulls means that the Silent 100 Explorer boasts five ensuite guest cabins on the main deck and in the starboard hull, in addition to an enormous full-beam master stateroom with private office on the main deck forward.
The aft section on the main deck is devoted a very spacious salon and dining area, while the open aft deck with hot tub is set up for sunbathing with a panoramic balcony over the transom, bar and breakfast table.
The wheelhouse is on the upper deck (with connecting captain’s cabin), where there is also a sky lounge and bar with al fresco dining facilities for a full complement of guests on the open aft deck.
The fly deck has more sunbathing space, a wet bar, a second helm station and the aforementioned space under the sliding solar panels that can be used for helicopter operations or as an open-air gym, for example.
A spiral staircase for the exclusive use of the guests links all the deck levels .
Top service The galley, crew quarters (including a crew mess) and hotel services are all housed in the portside hull. The crew has a dedicated staircase to access all deck levels so as not to disturb the guests.
There is even room for an 7,5-metre limo tender garage between the two hulls and a smaller crew tender and toys in side-loading garage in the portside hull.
“The sheer amount of family-friendly space aboard the Silent 100 Explorer has to be experienced to be believed,” says Michael Köhler. “It also means that clients are free to customise the arrangement according to personal preference. Do you want a gym or media room, a larger VIP suite or a country kitchen on main deck? No problem. The flexibility of the catamaran configuration means we can meet most requests.”

Silent-Yachts sells first flagship 100 Explorer
- October 19, 2021
Silent-Yachts has sold the first unit of its new flagship – the Silent 100 Explorer solar-electric catamaran designed by Marco Casali.
Silent-Yachts has sold the first unit of its four-deck 100 Explorer, with delivery scheduled for 2023. The 102ft, 440GT solar-electric catamaran has a beam of 45ft and a towering height of more than 34ft. Designed by Marco Casali, the 31m cat offers the living space of monohull motor yachts between 40-50m, according to Silent-Yachts.
Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “This new sale comes after the sale of three of our 80ft models in rapid succession and confirms the market’s interest in the superior comfort of catamarans and solar energy for propulsion needs plus all the household appliances on board.”
UNLIMITED RANGE Like all Silent catamarans, the Silent 100 Explorer has a silent solar-electric drive train and worldwide cruising capabilities, following all the brand’s models from the former Silent 64, which in January 2018 became the brand’s first solar-powered production boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
Solar cells on the 100 Explorer provide up to 40kWp (kWp stands for the ‘peak’ power output in kilowatts), while clean solar electrical energy is stored in a battery bank with a capacity of up to 800kWh. Coupled to twin 340kW (@700rpm) electric motors, the Silent 100 Explorer has an economic speed of 6-8 knots, cruising speed of 10 knots and top speed of 14-16 knots.
The solar panels are in the hardtop, which slides apart to reveal a fly deck that can also serve as a touch-and-go helipad. Because the solar energy is completely renewable, the Silent 100 Explorer has unlimited range, like all other Silent models, with diesel generators providing back-up auxiliary power.
Casali said: “The Silent 100 Explorer is a great challenge, taking the solar revolution of Silent-Yachts to the superyacht level. It will bring the experience of cruising to the next level, becoming a world reference for responsible yachting always connected to respect of the environment.
“Furthermore, the available spaces, fully customisable by the clients, allow for unique internal and external areas such as owner’s quarters or large saloons that aren’t even achievable on much longer monohull superyachts.”
SUPERYACHT SPACES Compared to the Silent 80, the 100 Explorer has an extra deck and much more space outdoors and indoors. The master suite of the 100 Explorer is 51sqm compared to the 27sqm owner’s cabin in the 80, while the aft outside areas are 105sqm versus 61sqm.
As well as the enormous full-beam master stateroom with private office forward on the main deck, the 100 Explorer has five en-suite guest cabins on the main deck and in the starboard hull.
The open aft deck with hot tub is set up for sunbathing with a panoramic balcony over the transom, bar and breakfast table. The wheelhouse and captain’s cabin are on the upper deck, where there’s also a sky lounge and bar with alfresco dining facilities on the aft deck.
The fly deck has more sunbathing space, wet bar, second helm station and the space under the sliding solar panels that can be used for helicopter operations or as an open-air gym, for example.
A spiral guest staircase links all the deck levels, while there’s also a crew staircase linking all decks. The galley, crew quarters and hotel services are in the portside hull. Between the two hulls is a tender garage for a 7.5m limo, while a side-loading garage in the portside hull can house a smaller crew tender and toys.
Köhler said: “The sheer amount of family-friendly space aboard the Silent 100 Explorer has to be experienced to be believed. Clients are free to customise the arrangement: Do you want a gym or media room, a larger VIP suite or a country kitchen on main deck? The flexibility of the catamaran configuration means we can meet most requests.” www.silent-yachts.com

Silent Yachts Sells First Flagship, Solar-Powered 100 Explorer Yacht
Silent Yachts have already sold the first example of their flagship model, the Silent 100 Explorer, just after its unveiling at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival.
It appears that Silent Yachts made quite the impression at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival because they already have a buyer for the first unit of their extraordinary Silent 100 Explorer yacht. This four-deck yacht features a solar-electric drivetrain that allows passengers to cruise in silence, giving them the opportunity to take in the sounds of the ocean. It’s very impressive that this vessel is solar-powered considering its length of 101.7-feet and beam of 44.7 feet. This size means that the Silent 100 Explorer has room for features like its five ensuite guest cabins, full-beam master stateroom with a private office, salon and dining area, a massive open aft section with a jacuzzi, sky lounge that features a bar with alfresco dining facilities, and space under the sliding solar panels that can be used for a helipad, seating or open-air gym equipment. What’s more, there’s room for a 24-foot limo tender between the two hulls.
“The sheer amount of family-friendly space aboard the Silent 100Explorerhas to be experienced to be believed,” says Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent Yachts.“It also means that clients are free to customize the arrangement according to personal preference. Do you want a gym or media room, a larger VIP suite, or a country kitchen on main deck? No problem. The flexibility of the catamaran configuration means we can meet most requests.”
Delivery of the Silent 100 Explorer is expected in 2023.

Silent-Yachts sells first unit of Silent 100 Explorer flagship

After unveiling its new Silent 100 Explorer flagship at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, Austrian-based Silent-Yachts has sold the first unit with a scheduled delivery in 2023.
“This new sale coming after the sale of three of our 80-foot models in rapid succession confirms the market’s interest in the superior comfort of catamarans and solar energy for propulsion needs, as well as all the household appliances on board,” says Silent-Yachts founder and CEO, Michael Köhler.
Like all Silent yachts, the four-deck Silent 100 Explorer has a solar-electric drive train and is designed to have worldwide cruising capabilities, which the company says in theory, gives unlimited range.
Renewable electric energy comes from the solar panels in the hard top which slides apart to reveal a sundeck that can also serve as a touch-and-go helipad. The solar cells provide up to 40kWp and solar electrical energy is stored in a battery bank with a capacity of up to 800 kWh. Twin 340kW electric motors provide a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 14-16 knots.
Depending on the specification, two or three diesel generators provide back-up auxiliary power.
Although only 31 metres in length, the company says the Silent 100 Explorer has outdoor and indoor living spaces that are equivalent to a monohull motor yacht of 40-50 metres.
“The Silent 100 Explorer is a great challenge proving that the solar revolution of Silent-Yachts to the superyacht level,” says designer, Marco Casali. “The kind of available spaces, fully customisable from the clients, will allow unique internal and external spaces not even achievable on much bigger superyachts like owner’s quarters or large saloons. The yacht boasts five en suite guest cabins on the main deck and in the starboard hull, in addition to a full-beam master stateroom with private office on the main deck forward.
The salon and dining area is located in the aft section on the main deck, while the open aft deck has a hot tub, a bar and breakfast table.
The wheelhouse is on the upper deck where there is also a sky lounge and bar with al fresco dining facilities on the open aft deck.
The fly deck has more sunbathing space, a wet bar, a second helm station, and the space under the sliding solar panels that can be used for helicopter operations or as an open-air gym.
A spiral staircase for the exclusive use of the guests links all the deck levels.
The galley and crew quarters are all housed in the portside hull, and the crew has a dedicated staircase to access all decks.
Between the two hulls is a 7.5-metre limo tender garage, and in the portside hull there is space for a smaller crew tender in a side-loading garage.
“The sheer amount of family-friendly space aboard the Silent 100 Explorer has to be experienced to be believed,” says Köhler. “It also means that clients are free to customise the arrangement according to personal preference. New in-build Silent 120 Explorer to offer onboard aircraft and submarine
Austrian solar catamaran builder Silent-Yachts has announced a collaboration with aerospace engineers VRCO and U-Boat Worx that will see its new 36.7-metre Silent 120 Explorer catamaran offered with the option of an aircraft and submarine.
The new superyacht project, which is due to hit the water in 2024, has been designed with eco-friendly expedition in mind. The yacht will be fitted with solar panels that can power 40kWp of energy, enough for the yacht's hotel mode and with the capacity to recharge an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft as well as a U-Boat Worx NEMO submarine. The solar panels can also slide outboard port and starboard to reveal a touch-and-go landing pad across the Explorer’s 13.85-metre beam.
“The trend is for bigger yachts and more luxury, more comfort, more water toys and more possibilities,” said Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts . “In the Silent 120 Explorer we designed a boat that is bigger in volume although not in length, and bigger gives the opportunity to store more of these toys. “We build catamarans, which means more beam and more space,” he added.
“We also build our boats with solar power and electric propulsion, and that means we don’t have to give a lot of space to an engine room, which means we gain room for things like a gym or extra tender storage. Finally, the extra beam of the catamaran form means the roof can accommodate an eVTOL aircraft. We can plug it in on board and it will be recharged in a couple of hours.
The aircraft will offer transportation for up to four and includes detection and avoidance technology, a ballistic parachute and low-altitude crash prevention systems. The technology is due for certification in 2024.
Meanwhile, the U-Boat Worx NEMO submarine offers diving to 100-metre depths for two people in an all-electric package whose footprint is smaller than two jet skis. It can offer eight hours of autonomy and positive buoyancy for automatic resurfacing at three knots.
Designed by Marco Casali , the multihull model started life as the Silent 100 but has since been extended by around six metres. Thee new Silent 120 Explorer has an impressive interior volume of 499GT, providing plenty of space for owners to make their own. Combined, the interior and exterior offer 900 square metres of space to unwind.
800kW lithium-ion batteries drive highly efficient 340kW e-motors, giving unlimited cruising potential. A cruising speed of eight knots is anticipated, while she is expected to reach top speeds of 16 knots.
While headquarters are in Austria, the Silent 120 is currently under construction in Turkey where the yard is also working on the 25-metre Silent VisionF 82. Part of a unique collaboration with Turkey’s VisionF Yachts, these models are built in aluminium, with four currently under construction.
