The San Juan 24

A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.

While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

We also have a number of informal get-togethers during the year to build a strong sense of Fleet cohesion and just have fun!

The Seattle SJ-24 Fleet, part of the San Juan 24 North American Class Association, is based at the Leschi Marina on Lake Washington, although SJ 24s can be found on Lake Union, Shilshole and other marinas in the greater Seattle area. Other Northwest fleets are located in Oak Harbor, Bellingham and Edmonds.

Contact the Fleet Captain listed above. We would be pleased to get you involved in our growing fleet as crew and/or boat owners. We generally know about good boats that are for sale.

SJ24, more than just a racer?

There are a couple of SJ24's for sale in my area. My son really wants to race but the wife and I like gunkholing. Is this boat capable of decent short term cruising (2-5 nights). I have also read reviews suggesting these boats may be a little unstable. This would be my second boat (first was a Hunter 27).

Jackdaw

The SJ24 is a decent boat, if lightly built. It's is quick for its size, and gets its reputation for tippiness from its propensity to roll when going downwind under spinnaker. This trait is very common in IOR boats of the period. Upwind it's fine. The interior is small for its size dues to its racing designs, and is one big open space. You would be very cozy for a weeks trip. BWY, that is not a 'short cruise', it's probably longer than 90% of longest durations most have been way from the dock!

I'm also looking at a couple Catalina 22's. Maybe that would fit better and racing will be more beer can than serious anyway.

I currently own a 1982 San Juan 23. I've sailed on the SJ24 and really prefer the SJ23. I owned a C22 for 4 years and sailed it hard and long. We camped up to a week in it with the pop-up canvas. I found it a royal pain to set that up each night. The C22 is a real thrill to sail if you know what you are doing. My SJ23 has been modified and has an enclosed marine head. It has all the late model improvements and is a much better boat for gunk-holing than the C22 or SJ24. The SJ23 is quite fast on all points of sail and carries a std or asy spinnaker nicely if you pay attention to what you are doing. I have also owned a H26 which surpassed all other trailer sailed boats for cabin layout and creature comfort but is a water ballasted boat. Nothing wrong with that if you are not planning to do much racing. For just the wife and I gunk holing and laid back sailing I'd go for a H26 in top condition. More money, but a better answer for quiet weekends. Ray

SJ24 Seattle Race Fleet

san juan 24 sailboat interior

San Juan 24 one-design fleet

We race as a one-design fleet on Wednesday evenings on Lake Washington from mid-April to mid-September. The races are professionally conducted by a racing PRO officer from the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle . One-design is a form of racing where all boats are virtually identical in design, equipment and sails. The SJ24 NACA constitution, specifications and measurer's handbook is employed to insure SJ24 Class races are primarily determined by the skill of the skipper and crew. Boats in the SJ24 Class race each other without any handicap calculations, start at the same time, and the winner is the first to cross the finish line.

Six to 10 boats usually race on Wednesday nights. We also participate in selected regattas held at Shilshole Bay on Puget Sound. Trophies are awarded for the Wednesday night round-the-buoy series, races held on Salt Water and a Fleet Championship that covers all the fleet racing during the year.

The Seattle SJ24 Fleet, part of the San Juan 24 North American Class Association, is based at the South Leschi Marina on Lake Washington. Although SJ24s can be found on Lake Union, Shilshole and other marinas in the greater Seattle area.

How Do I Get Involved?

Interested in crewing, racing your SJ24 or purchasing a SJ24 to race?

Navigate to the Contact Us section of this website and enter your information. We'll contact you directly. Or Email/text message the Fleet Captain, Sean Busby at [email protected] or (801) 209-7403.  We would be pleased to get you involved in our growing fleet as crew and/or race boat owners. We generally know about good racing boats that are for sale. We welcome new boats that want to learn the art of sailboat racing in a supportive group of sailors.

Map to South Leschi Marina

The South Leschi Marina is located at 150 Lakeside Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144.  Immediately South of the BluWater restaurant. The racing area is on Lake Washington, between the I-90 and I-520 bridges.

NOTE! Parking permits are required in the spots facing the lake and tickets are expensive at about $250. Public parking is available on the street or in the marina parking lot facing the street. If full, you can always find free parking if you head North on Lakeside Ave. In many cases, parking is available in the North marina lot. It is a 5 minute walk to the South marina.

The entrance to the docks is down a flight of stairs at the south end of the parking area. Look for the dumpsters.

San Juan 24 - The boat

The San Juan 24 was designed by famed marine architect Bruce Kirby in 1971, originally as a quarter-ton IOR boat. Over a thousand SJ24s were built by the Clark Boat Company from 1972 through 1982 in factories located in Washington and North Carolina. SJ24s are found in marinas throughout the United States and Canada.

Principal attributes:

Excellent performer in light or heavy air with good windward pointing ability

Heavily built hull and rig

Multi-purpose – racing and cruising with roomy interior, lots of sitting headroom

Attractively designed

Affordable – depending on location and supply, boats in good condition often can be purchased for under $5,000.

While normally raced with a crew of four (some race with three), the boats can easily be sailed by a crew of two, or arranged for single-handed sailing.

San juan 24

The san juan 24 is a 24.0ft masthead sloop designed by bruce kirby and built in fiberglass by clark boat company since 1973., 1200 units have been built..

The San juan 24 is a light sailboat which is a good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Incredibly roomy with huge storage space. Offset double berth forward. U-shaped galley with head opposite. PH has two settees and table, plus seats for both pilot and copilot. She has a tall easy to manage sloop rig with roller furling on both sails. Also includes a cruising spinnaker in a sock and a storm sail. Her keel is steel, filled with lead, and is deep and long. She has a skeg and a deep transom-hung rudder. She can be steered by tiller in cockpit or wheel (hydraulic) in the PH. She has top of line autopilot networked with 10" Garmin chartplotter and radar, as well as Icom VHF, stereo and DVD player. Length of hull is 32'(overall less than 35'); LWL 26'6" draft 5'6-5'9"; beam 11'8"; dry displacement 12,100#. Built in Burnaby, BC in 1986. Hull and engine installation by Hotfoot Boats, with completion by an employee of Hotfoot in his spare time. Engine is original Volvo MD17d (3100 hours) located in center of boat. Serious tankage for cruising: 100 gal water in 2 fiberglass tanks, 50 gal fuel in SS tank (plus 2 gallon day tank for stove), and 24 gal waste in fiberglass tank. Has capstan windless and two anchors. All new wiring and panels in 2008. Altogether 6 batteries. Automatic Halon fire extinguishing system in engine room. Fresh paint through much of interior. I am looking for a quick sale and have priced it accordingly. Buy now and enjoy a summer of cruising! The people who love this boat are those who like to watch the shoreline moving by and keep an eye on the horizon from a warm dry place. Meanwhile, the person who loves pure sailing can experience it fully at the tiller. The current slip is available to the new owner, who would very much enjoy having a home away from home in Friday Harbor. Many more photo's are available. I am also available by telephone. Please request my telephone number by asking a question of me through eBay. The boat is also for sale locally. Please tell me if you want the sale to be conditional upon satisfactory survey and/or sea trial. This would need to be done in a timely fashion. Consideration of contingencies like this may make any offer more or less desirable. Thank you!

Coronado Center Cockpit Sailboat - 40 ft LOA - Great live-aboard

Coronado Center Cockpit Sailboat - 40 ft LOA - Great live-aboard

Bainbridge Island, Washington

Make Coronado C35

Great liveaboard sail boat. Many will tell you that it is one of the roomiest boats inside for this size of a boat. Flushdeck design allows approximately 6' headroom throughout, except about 7 ft near the companionway in the main cabin. I've lived aboard for four years, and it was like a mini apartment inside. The center cockpit allows for a nice size stateroom in the back with a full queen size bed (10" thick futon mattress with inner coil springs, is only a year old. I upgraded the anchor to a 70lb CRQ plow, with about 40 ft chain, and then rope. Helps me to sleep well at anchor knowing I won't go anywhere. Also has a smaller dansforth style anchor onboard. Pictures show interior. Rear bed sleeps 2-3 (Queen), front V-birth is roomy and sleeps two just fine, Couch in main cabin folds up into bunks for 2. We have slept 7 aboard very comfortably. 2 more can sleep in the cockpit if you add air mattresses or make cushions to lay on. About the boat: It is older, but in pretty good shape for the age. (Much better than others I looked at when buying). I sail it to the San Juan Islands about once a year for 2 week getaways. I love anchoring out in harbors. Sails are older. Main looks pretty good, but genoa looks older with a small patch that I added last year due to a tear. Probably about due for new one. I have never used the spinnaker, but it is a bright yellow and blue, symmetrical, with 3" pole I bought for $300, and I purchased a sock to use for it. Boat is sloop rigged, but has connections to add a stay, and run it as a cutter rig. I have a stay sail for it, that I believe is Engine was pulled and replaced with an inboard electric by a professional ($4,000) about 5 years ago. it is 36V (6 golf cart batteries). It pushes the boat about 5-6 knots, but at full speed only lasts about an hour. Batteries are 6 years old though, and if replaced with higher volume you might get a lot more. (Or add another bank). It is great for getting in and out of marinas, but for longer trips, I use a 15 horse outboard on the back which is included. I think the impellar went out on it though. I ran it a couple months ago and it wasn't pumping water. I would consider replacing it if I kept it this boat. I have also considered putting a diesel back in for long cruises down to mexico. All plumbing, etc. still seems to be there for a diesel. There is an 8 ft inflatable RIB dinghy that hangs from davits off the back. It has a 6 horse mercury, that is 1-1/2 years old and still under warranty. Great for getting around in bays when at anchor. (I go to the San Juan's a lot). I was going to sell separately, but will include if full price is paid for the boat. Offers below full price won't include the dinghy or smaller outboard. I will sell them separately to recoup some of the difference or keep it for lake fishing. Dodger seems to have been replaced with a frame that is 7" too wide. I had planned on taking a little out of the middle, but please assume that there is no canvas over cockpit. You can have the dodger that I have, but it won't fit as is. Will need to be made smaller. (Material is very good though). Hot water heater was replaced last summer with an 11 gallon stainless (electric) model. Great for multiple showers. I have used it 24 hours after power shut off and still hot. I have a Honda generator that I used to run for the water heater and microwave when at anchor, and to charge the house batteries every couple days. I intend to keep the generator though. I bought it used for under a $1,000 though, so they are easy to come by. Not much in the way of electronics. I have a hand held GPS, hand held (waterproof) VHF, and depth finder up on deck, that are all only a couple of years old. The main VHF is mounted below, but is older, and I never used it, because I was always up above. Refer seems to stop getting cold sometimes and then after I tap on temperature sensors inside, it sometimes starts working again. Haven't figured out if it is a loose wire, or not. There is also a small dorm sized freezer in one of the lockers. It runs off of 110V. Stove is a 2 burner propane unit on gimbals. Has an oven. 2 ea 40 gallon water tanks (80 total). 17 gallon diesel tank in case you put diesel engine back in it. You can buy a used one for a couple thousand. I am currently about 400 miles away, so it is either buy unseen, in which case I will drive there to meet after deposit is made. Or, I will be up in the area the last week of the month to show it if it is not sold yet. Feel free to email to make arrangements to see it. I intend to have it sold this month, even if I have to take less than asking price. Current moorage is $412/mo. It is an awesome small harbor/bay and small marina with great facilities (laundry, rec room available for watching games or entertaining, exercise room, full showers, etc. You can see downtown Seattle skyline from the middle of the harbor. People anchor out there all the time. There is a ferry nearby that goes to downtown Seattle. Or, it is about a 45 minute to 1 hr sail with a 10 knot wind. You can live-aboard if you make arrangements with owner of marina, but he may want a little more money.

The boat has never been stored or moored for long periods in the water. It has been trailered after each use – that’s why it has never been bottom painted! This 242 Cruiser was only used in fresh water until 2014. In 2014 and 2015, it was taken up to explore the San Juan Islands and Canadian Gulf Islands for a total of 15 days use. Fresh water internal flushing was performed after both trips. The current owner is a retired commercial pilot and understands the importance of regular maintenance for both his airplane and boat. In addition to winterizing in the fall and making ready every spring, the oil has been changed every year and the plugs changed every other year. Additional engine and outdrive maintenance was performed as needed. In the past three years this 242 Cruiser has had new batteries, a new impeller and water pump, new “glass” for the canvas enclosure, a new Standard Horizon VHF radio, new cabin fans, and a new marine Kenwood AM/FM/CD/USB player. Best Outboard for 24 San Juan

  • Add to quote

Hello, I recently bought a San Juan 24, and I need to get a outboard for it. I'm wondering what is the best horsepower, while also easily fitting on the transom motor mount. I was thinking about a 5hp outboard, but I was concerned that it maybe too heavy for the mount. Thanks for any help!

san juan 24 sailboat interior

My first boat was an SJ 24. I had a 6hp on the motor mount and it was fine. Where do you live?

san juan 24 sailboat interior

I would get the Tohatsu Sailpro. 6hp, pretty light, 25" shaft that will stay in the water even if you are in waves, a high thrust prop, and it has a low power alternator to charge your battery.

san juan 24 sailboat interior

Start with one that runs well already... Give it a year on ethanol gas, and it won't... Either buy another one that runs well, or have it serviced for half the price of replacing it... REPEAT. Sadly, that's been my experience... the SJ 24 would do well with anything from 3hp to 8hp... get what's lightest, because ultimately YOU have to move it. Long shaft is better, just from prop wanting to pop out of the water in chop (and its not like the prop will be the thing deepest in the water anyway, keel/rudder come to mind for that). I run a 3.5hp Johnson... short shaft... the shortie isn't really ideal... but it does allow it to swing well clear of the water when I tilt it up, it's a trade-off. My 2950lb boat will do 6 knots in calm water WOT, and easily keep up 4-5 WOT with a 20mph headwind and chop... so anything more than 3.5, should be sufficient for your SJ. The 4hp is usually the cutoff point for internal tanks... usually at 4hp, they have an internal and external connections... Also at 4hp they come in various shaft lengths, and that's also when you first can buy an alternator for them. It's not a honking large alternator, but can provide bursts of 6A. So you know 8 hours of running, at 3/4 throttle you might be able to charge your battery back from 1/2 dead.

san juan 24 sailboat interior

I like yamaha but they are heavier. A mercury 6 hp weighs 56 pounds. Get the extra long shaft if you can. The longer the shaft the better. There is a sj24 for sale here and the mentioned reinforcing the transom for the slightly bigger outboard they put on. I'm not sure if the sj24 is made to support much wight back there. Most of the outboards I see on them are pretty small. But the mercury sox four stroke isn't too heavy. Common and easy to get parts and service.

san juan 24 sailboat interior

I have the Merc 6. Its okay but a PITA with the carb. Have to clean the carb 2-3 times a season. The idle jets are just too small. You want the external tank, trust me. The internal tank is about a liter - only good for half an hour of running time. With a 3 gallon external tank, its more than a month before I need gas.

It is probably worth a little web research to find the weight-rating for the bracket on the transom. They are built to hold a specified maximum engine weight (or sometimes rated in horsepower). While it is unlikely yours won't support the smaller engines you're considering, it is still worth a few minutes of easy research to be certain. And older ones that may be rated in HP were presuming 2-strokes... generally 15-20% lighter then their more modern 4-stroke counterparts of identical HP. If rated for a 5 HP 2-stroke, and you put on a 5 HP 4-stroke, you'll probably be OK but could be exceeding the design.

san juan 24 sailboat interior

98% of cruisers (read people who use their outboards almost every single day of the year) have Yamaha outboards. Unless you are operating your boat exclusively in fresh water, do not purchase any other outboard. Size wise, I'm sorry, I can't be of any help.

san juan 24 sailboat interior

It is true. Yamaha is the best.

I had a 5 hp honda longshaft with a charging unit on my 26 footer never missed a beat great mileage would buy one again in a heartbeat.heaps enough power.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm kind of siding with the Tohatsu. I like the 25 inch shaft, and it's only 50 pounds. I found one online for $1,525, with free shipping, and no tax. Good Deal?

Sounds about right for a 25" long shaft. Buying new avoids the problems that can come with buying used.

You might want to consider the Lehr 5hp. It runs on propane so it avoids the carburetor problems of gasoline engines. No need to drain the gas each time. It can sit for months without use but will start right up when you want it. It will run about half an hour on one of those 1 pound bottles or ten hours on a 20 lb. barbeque tank at wide open throttle.

My father had a 1974 Chevy K5 Blazer that ran off of propane. It had a 40 gallon tank behind the rear seats. It was a fairly common setup during the 1970's gas crisis. No modifications were needed, just some tweaking of the carb jets. In fact, it would run on regular gas, just not as smooth. I test drove a Lehr outboard at last year's Long Beach Boat Show. It's nothing but a re-tuned Tohatsu, meaning that it is a great little engine. However, Lehr seems to have the attitude that they have reinvented the wheel, and are charging accordingly. When they realize that readjusting carb jets doesn't warrant a $500 mark up, I would consider buying one.

My dad has been trying to get me onto Lehr outboards. It def has it's advantages, and there is only a $300 difference between a 6hp Tohatsu, and a 5hp Lehr.

The Lehr is a Chinese copy of a Yamaha and has pretty mixed reliability reviews. There is not a good supply chain for small parts. It doesn't come in a 25" shaft either. The Tohatsu is Japanese made and rebranded under other labels (Nissan and Mercury), parts are widely available and pretty affordable. I like the idea of propane powered outboards, I'm just waiting for someone else to do a better job at implementing it.

"No modifications were needed, just some tweaking of the carb jets. In fact, it would run on regular gas, just not as smooth." While it's possible to make a gasoline engine run on propane, the Lehr engines won't run on gasoline. Propane has a higher octane rating than gasoline. The Lehr runs at a higher compression ratio than a gasoline engine can. It is designed specifically for propane.
