The ultimate guide to The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Andrea M. Rotondo

  • The 298-passenger Evrima — the first ship in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection — set sail in October.
  • The all-suite yacht offers six types of accommodations — all with balconies and 24/7 room service.
  • Enjoy fine food aboard: A three-star Michelin chef designed some dining experiences.

In one of my favorite movies, "Almost Famous," fictional groupie Penny Lane opined that "It's all happening!" The rock band closest to her heart was finally making it big and she could not contain her glee. I felt that same sense of enthusiasm when The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection finally set sail on Oct. 15, 2022.

It's been a long time coming. The launch of the line was delayed for three years due to a variety of circumstances that included slowdowns at the shipyard , the pandemic and moving its first yacht to a new shipyard for completion. So it was a thrilling moment when its first ship, Evrima, welcomed guests in Barcelona on Saturday.

Way back in 2017, executives at The Ritz-Carlton announced the development of a line of brand-new yachts that would supposedly change the face of luxury cruising — at least for Marriott loyalists and anyone that prefers a small-ship experience.

Whether you're road-tripping or globetrotting, the suite life is always better. Download the free TPG App to upgrade your travel!

Evrima is the first superyacht in the Ritz trio. Ilma and Luminara will join it in the future.

Luxury travel fans that love small-ship sailing with a focus on "greatest hits" cruise destinations, suite-style accommodations and Michelin-level dining want to know if The Ritz-Carlton is worth the wait. Read on for a guide to this brand-new cruise line.

3 things TPG loves about The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

  • The superyacht Evrima is intimate, accommodating 298 passengers.
  • The aft Marina platform affords easy entry to the sea for swimming and nonmotorized water sports.
  • An all-inclusive fare includes beverages, tips, all dining, Wi-Fi, a personal concierge and more.

What we could do without

  • We wish the tie-in with Marriott Bonvoy's loyalty program was a bit more advantageous for elites. You need to be Marriott Titanium or higher to receive complimentary priority boarding and departure benefits. We'd love to see the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card add priority boarding as a benefit in the future.
  • We'd also love to see some more unusual ports of call once the line hits its stride. For example, while Ritz's Athens (Piraeus), Greece round-trip itinerary with an overnight call on Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey plus Santoniri and Milos, Greece may entice new-to-cruisers, those who take several luxury cruises a year have probably already been to all of those ports of call — more than once or twice. (We know: first-world problems.)

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's fleet

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

At the inception of the cruise line, the company announced it would sail three identical yachts. While three yachts are still the plan — Ilma and Luminara are set to join Evrima in 2024 and 2025, respectively — the ships will not have the same design.

The line tapped Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, to build ships two and three, and Ilma and Luminara will be much larger than Evrima. They'll be 171 feet longer than their sister ship and measure 46,750 gross register tons compared with Evrima's roughly 24,000 gross register tons. Like Evrima, the second and third ships will be all-suite ships, but they will feature 228 suites instead of 149. Additionally, the next-generation ships will have a higher percentage of larger suites than Evrima.

According to the cruise line, it has an eye toward sustainability. In regards to Ilma and Luminara, it says "each vessel will be fitted with four dual-fuel engines and utilize liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its main fuel source, significantly reducing emissions as compared to traditional practices. Additionally, the yachts will include advanced water treatment systems, an efficient heat recovery loop, LED lighting, and more, with the goal of minimizing environmental impact."

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has an option to order two additional yachts from the shipyard. It will be interesting to see if the line sticks to its three initial ships or expands to a five-ship fleet.

Destinations and itineraries

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has solved a problem I've had for a long time with the luxury cruise market: the length of the sailings offered. Often, luxury lines program incredible voyages of 14 or more nights. Sure, they sound wonderful and I'd love to go ahead and book them. But, my husband is a small business owner, and my job is busy too; it's hard for us to take two weeks or more of vacation at once. We prefer high-end vacations that are on the shorter side.

The Ritz yacht offers a nice mix of voyages that span four to 12 nights, making it much easier for working professionals to book them. But if you do have more time, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection can also accommodate you with back-to-back sailings. That makes it a snap to customize a longer sailing.

Evrima began its sailing career in October 2022 with plans for a series of five European itineraries before it is set to reposition to the Caribbean, Costa Rica and the Bahamas for the winter.

The yacht's inaugural "warm weather" season offers five-, seven-, 10- and 12-night itineraries, including:

  • Bridgetown, Barbados round trips.
  • Bridgetown, Barbados to Philipsburg, St. Martin (and reverse).
  • Philipsburg to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • San Juan round trip.
  • San Juan to Bridgetown (and reverse).
  • Bridgetown to Panama City, Panama.
  • Panama City to San Jose (Puerto Caldera), Costa Rica.
  • San Jose round trip.
  • San Jose to Fort Lauderdale.
  • Fort Lauderdale round trip.

If you love transatlantic sailings, check out Evrima's 13-night April 14 itinerary that departs San Juan and arrives in Lisbon, Portugal with calls on Hamilton, Bermuda; Horta and Ponta Delgada in The Azores; plus nine sea days.

The ship then tours the Mediterranean through October 2023.

You'll love this line if…

OK. You got us here. The line just started sailing and we haven't been on board just yet so we can't tell you exactly what you'll love about this line. But we can make some educated guesses based on The Ritz's track record, the marketing material we've seen so far and early reviews from other sailors.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The Ritz-Carlton brand is all about exemplary service. We expect this drive to deliver an authentic, above-average experience to find its way onto the yachts. The Ritz offers luxury but it's never stuffy or stodgy. Instead, the line and yacht offer modern and elegant decor (nothing fussy), personalized service and Michelin-star quality dining.

One of the appealing things about The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is its all-inclusive fares — something it will have in common with many luxury cruise lines.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fares include:

  • ocean-view accommodations with a private balcony, which The Ritz calls a "terrace."
  • a dedicated Personal Concierge.
  • all dining at multiple restaurants as well as 24-hour in-suite room service.
  • beverages (all nonalcoholic, bottled water, coffee and tea plus select wines and liquors) throughout the yacht and in your suite.
  • onboard entertainment and enrichment.
  • a marina-style platform with access to nonmotorized watersports while at anchor.
  • onboard gratuities for housekeeping, dining and bar staff. (You will need to tip for salon and spa services.)

Cabins and suites

If you gravitate toward modern interior design with sleek surfaces, mixed textures and muted earth tones, you'll appreciate the suites aboard Evrima. (Each cabin type is referred to as a "suite" in The Ritz-Carlton yacht world even if it's not technically two or more rooms.)

The line tapped Tillberg Design of Sweden to envision its cabins. With a private yacht feel, akin to The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Florida's Sunny Isles Beach and Miami Beach, along with Los Angeles, the emphasis is on comfortable open-concept spaces and natural light.

Upon arrival at your suite, a chilled bottle of Moët et Chandon (Grande Marque Champagne, Brut Imperial, Non-Vintage, according to a publicist we spoke to) will greet you. Enjoy that out on your private balcony before getting to know the intricacies of your cabin. All suites offer a king-size bed with high-end Frette linens, digital flat-screen TV, a minibar stocked with your preferences (bottled water is Perrier) and an in-suite safe. Each suite has a Nespresso machine and a selection of complimentary specially roasted coffee and teas from Illy Cafè and Dammann Frères. If you want hypoallergenic pillows, those are available upon request.

The bathroom features a double vanity, luxury bath amenities, robes and slippers, a vanity mirror and a hair dryer.

You can order 24-hour room service. The All-Day Dining menu features influences from every dining venue on board and a Late-Night Dining menu will also be available.

Each suite is also assigned a personal concierge. According to Ritz-Carlton, this person "is your single onboard touchpoint to ensure a flawless, seamless journey from beginning to end."

Finally, the yacht also offers connecting and convertible suites for families and friends traveling together.

Let's take a look at what the suites look like:

Terrace Suites

Entry-level cabins are called Terrace Suites. Ninety cabins in this category are 300 square feet with a 67-square-foot balcony. Two Terrace Suites are ADA-compliant (adhering to standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act).

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Signature Suites

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The next cabin category covers more floor space at 429 square feet and accommodates a king bed plus a convertible sleeper sofa. The balcony is 101 square feet. There are 27 Signature Suites and one is ADA-compliant.

Grand Suites

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Are you the type that tends to overpack for a voyage? Then a Grand Suite — there are 14 of them on the ship — may be right for you since it offers dual walk-in closets. It also offers a king bed plus a convertible sleeper sofa. The suite interior is 587 square feet and the terrace is 108 square feet.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

2-Story Loft Suites

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The yacht's 611-square-foot, bi-level Loft Suites are interesting because they separate the living space (upstairs) from your sleeping quarters (downstairs). The plus is that you can enter the suite from hallways on both levels. The bathroom situation is also upgraded, with a double vanity master bathroom that includes a soaking tub and a separate shower (on the lower level) and a powder room on the upper level. Adding a bit of privacy, the convertible sleeper sofa in this stateroom is on the upper level that's otherwise devoted to living/dining space. The terrace is also on the upper level, at 76 square feet, and downstairs features a panoramic picture window for sea views. The yacht features 12 Loft Suites.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

View Suites

At first blush on the deck plan, the four View Suites may seem similar to the Grand Suites. But, there's an important difference: floor-to-ceiling windows throughout that offer incredible views of the ocean and port. Suites 732 and 733 are 544 square feet with an 86-square-foot balcony while suites 734 and 735 are larger, at 574 square feet with a 97-square-foot balcony. This cabin category features a king bed and a convertible sleeper sofa.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Owner's Suites

The ship's two Owner's Suites, at 1,091 square feet, are larger than most Manhattan apartments. There are two nice things about this accommodation: a second full bath and a 592-square-foot balcony. The terrace is outfitted with upgrades such as outdoor furniture (a full sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, two loungers and two cocktail tables) and a dining table for four. The piece de resistance, however, is the private hot tub.

Inside, you'll find plenty of room to spread out with a dining table for six, a sitting area with four chairs and a table and a second sitting area with a loveseat, coffee table and two chairs. Beds includes a king bed and a convertible sleeper sofa. One more extra amenity is a pair of high-end binoculars for guest use.

Restaurants and dining

Even though the yachts will only host up to 298 passengers at full capacity, there are several distinct dining venues — including S.E.A, designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg in Germany.

All venues feature fresh, local ingredients while serving cuisine influenced by the destinations the yacht visits.

The Evrima Room

While Ritz yachts won't have main dining rooms the way you're used to seeing them aboard mega-ships — huge cavernous venues that pack everyone in tight during meal service — The Evrima Room is the ship's main restaurant. Here, you can dine as a couple or join other travelers in an intimate and relaxed setting. The restaurant is on Deck 4, aft, and the menu will change with the seasons.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

This is one of the most romantic spots on the ship. On Deck 8, aft, in front of the pool, this laidback venue was designed for a lunch under the sun or a romantic alfresco meal in the evening. The Mediterranean-style menu features the local catch, and you can order prime cuts of meat from the grill. You can enjoy drinks here, too, as you take in the beauty of the yacht.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Every ship needs a sushi bar, and you'll find one aboard Evrima on Deck 6 at Talaat Nam, which also offers a family-style table experience and outdoor dining with a view of the ship's wake. While we haven't yet seen the sushi menu, a passenger shared the dinner menu and it looks fantastic.

Starters include a Thai mango salad, chicken satay, Vietnamese-style spring rolls, hamachi, gyoza, beef tataki, red miso soup and edamame. Entrees are appealing and include beef rendang, chicken adobo, Thai prawn curry, Thai red curry, pancit noodles, ramen, chicken laksa and kimchee fried rice. Desserts include one of my favorite flavors: pandan. The leaves of this aromatic plant remind me of coconut and vanilla. That's presented in a custard delicacy. You can also order mango sticky rice or an almond sago avocado concoction with coconut ice cream.

The Pool House

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

When you want to enjoy a more relaxed meal, be it an early-risers breakfast, lunch or late-night nosh, The Pool House — on Deck 5 directly in front of the aft pool — will punch the ticket. Menu items are prepared a la minute in this open-air space.

Passengers on the first sailing reported a breakfast menu that ranged from challah French toast with berries and syrup to a garden frittata, lobster omelet with Hackleback caviar, breakfast tacos, bagels with lox, avocado toast and more. Coffee is by Illy and tea by Dammann Freres.

Lunchtime and afternoon "to share" items looked yummy, too: guacamole, fried calamari, blistered shishito peppers, sticky chicken wings, Peruvian ceviche, baked cauliflower and wild mushroom flatbread.

More substantial menu items included burgers, buttermilk fried chicken, lobster and shrimp rolls, beer-battered cod, steak sandwiches, roasted salmon BBQ baby back ribs and four interesting salads. Dessert is limited but includes ice cream, chocolate fudge brownies and creme brulee.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

If you're a fan of chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, his three Michelin-starred restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg, head to S.E.A., on Deck 6 where he's created a "specialty dining experience." In cruise lingo, that usually means it carries an extra surcharge and that is the case here. (We're reaching out to The Ritz to find out the exact cost, but a passenger reported it cost $625 for her and her boyfriend to dine there.) In terms of food, it's a "European tasting menu;" more details to come. Reservations are required.

The Living Room

Coffee drinkers and snackers need to memorize the location of The Living Room on Deck 4. It's a place to socialize or just sink into its comfy chairs to read a book from the library. Throughout the day and night, you can order freshly roasted coffees and espresso and pick up pastries and other treats.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The Marina Terrace

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Just above the Marina, you'll find this spot that serves drinks and "light bites."

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

You'll no doubt spend plenty of time at The Bar. Kick-start each night of your voyage with a special cocktail or Champagne toast and stop by for a nightcap after dinner. Looking for something decadent? This lounge serves premium Champagnes paired with caviar.

In-suite dining

There is an All-Day Dining menu that can be served in your suite or on your balcony 24/7.

Entertainment and activities

Life aboard any yacht is naturally a bit more laid-back than the vibe you'll find on mega-ships that offer dozens of bars, a comedy club, Broadway-style productions, karaoke, casino games and more.

Theaters and shows

While there is no theater on board the ship, there are opportunities to enjoy live music. Initial reports from passengers indicate that evenings are a bit on the quiet side so far.

The Observation Lounge

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

As twilight descends, passengers seek out The Observation Lounge on Deck 10. With incredible sea views, it's the place to get to know your fellow passengers over a drink at sunset followed by late-night dancing.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

As mentioned above, The Living Room does double duty. It's a library and coffee house during the day, but it morphs into a piano bar and dance hall at night. Enjoy live music here in the evening hours. It's expected to be the go-to cocktail lounge on the ship.

Other interior attractions and activities

Despite the ship's intimate stature, it offers the amenities you'd expect of a luxury cruise ship. You'll find a spa, fitness center, cigar bar and boutique. Here are more details.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Forward on Deck 9, The Spa — open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily — is quite well equipped for such a small ship. Here you'll find all manner of salon and beauty services as well as treatments ranging from deep muscle to hot stone massage.

The complete spa oasis includes a Relaxation Lounge and outdoor relaxation areas, including a hot tub all the way forward on that deck. There also are separate "Heat Experience" facilities — aroma steam rooms and dry saunas — for male and female passengers. They're in the changing areas. The spa provides lockers, robes, slippers, shower caps, towels and all the other accouterments you'd expect.

Treatment prices are similar to what you'd find on land. In the beauty salon, a shampoo and style starts at $80 for short hair, $90 for medium and $100 for long. A haircut and style are a bit more expensive, starting at $100 for short hair, $125 for medium and $140 for long hair. Hair straightening or curling (with no wash) is a bargain at $55. If you want a manicure, the 45-minute "Supreme" will set you back $95. For men, a beard trim starts at $35 while a shave starts at $75.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

But it's the spa treatments most people get excited about. Aboard the yacht, there are several massage options, such as the 60-or 90-minute signature "Evrima" massage (starting at $255), where light to moderate pressure is paired with aromatherapy essential oils. Also available are deep muscle massages (starting at $205) and piedras calientes therapy treatments, which use warmed stones (starting at $275). After a day in port, you might want the hour-long black masque Leg Renewal Treatment ($130) that alleviates tired legs by reducing inflammation and encouraging enhanced circulation.

An array of facials are also available, including the 90-minute Ultimate Radiance and Renewal Facial ($320) that uses ESPA skincare-brand products.

If you plan to book several treatments, your best bet may be buying one of these packages:

If you didn't prebook a treatment before boarding, your personal concierge can assist you on board; otherwise, call or visit The Spa. A receptionist will explain the options and make your arrangements.

If you use Technogym equipment at home, you'll recognize the gear in the yacht's fitness center on Deck 9 near The Spa. You'll find treadmills, stationary bikes, ellipticals, free weights and more.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

In addition to the exercise equipment, you can also sign up for personal training sessions (30 minutes starting at $75), private yoga sessions (an hour starts at $100) and fitness consultations (starting at $275). The Gym is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Talk with The Spa to make reservations.

Guests can also take advantage of complimentary group exercise programs and presentations on such wellness topics as nutrition. Consult the onboard activity guide for more details.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Note that the gym can only be used by passengers who are 18 and older. Sixteen and 17-year-olds can use the facility when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (or upon filling out an authorized consent form).

The Humidor

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Most luxury ships have a cigar bar, and Evirma is no different. The Humidor on Deck 10 offers premium cognac paired with hand-rolled cigars.

The Boutique

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

While you won't find a veritable shopping mall aboard Evrima in the style of Royal Caribbean's Royal Promenade, you will find The Boutique on Deck 4. The line promises leading luxury labels and artwork from local craftspeople.

Deck-top attractions

On Evrima, the deck attractions focus on the great outdoors. The aft Marina will wow anyone that loves watching the waves and jumping into the water to enjoy snorkeling or paddleboarding. Here's what you can expect on the deck of the Ritz-Carlton yachts.

While not on the top deck, The Marina is a standout feature of the yacht. It's on Deck 3 with direct access to the water. Here, you can borrow gear — like paddleboards, windsurf boards, kayaks, sailboats and snorkel equipment — for complimentary watersports. As with similar watersports platforms on other ships, the Marina will only open when weather conditions are right and local authorities permit its usage.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Even if you don't plan to get in the water, The Marina is an ideal spot to spend a sunny day. Multiple seating areas afford incredible views.

This deck is especially atmospheric at night with accent lighting that creates a beautiful blue glow.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Evrima has three pools. The main pool is on Deck 5, aft, near The Pool House restaurant.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

A smaller pool is on Deck 8 near Mistral and the Ritz Kidz club.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

A small, round pool — with a shade canopy — is located on Deck 9, forward, at The Spa Terrace.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Observation Terrace

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The Observation Terrace is all the way forward on Deck 10, in front of the Observation Lounge. This is your perch for a bird's-eye view from the ship. Comfy seating areas abound where you can grab a drink and chat with newfound friends.

Children's programs

Where other cruise lines such as Viking and Virgin Voyages have barred children from their ships, Ritz-Carlton has no such limitations on its yachts. Children as young as 6 months can sail with the line.

The line purposely carved out space aboard each vessel for a Ritz-Kids club on Deck 8 aft. Children ages 4-12 are welcome to attend the programs in the club, which range from educational to arts and crafts. The program will be beefed up during the summer and holidays. There will be a nominal fee for each session.

While guests have access to Ritz-Kids, babysitting services are not offered.

A limited number of cribs are available upon request.

What to know before you go

Here are some big-picture details you should know before you cruise with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Dress codes

The line says it focuses on the "casual freedom of a yachting vacation," so you don't need to worry about packing formal wear. There are no formal nights on Ritz yachts. Passengers on the first sailing report that some gentlemen are wearing sportcoats in the evening while others aren't. Women are donning flowing palazzo pants and pretty blouses as well as cocktail dresses and sundresses.

Even so, when packing for your Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection cruise, keep these two dress codes in mind:

Yacht Casual: At breakfast and lunch, shirts, shoes and bathing suit cover-ups are required unless you're at the pool. Then you can go barefoot and you don't need to cover up your swimsuit.

In the evening, put away the sleeveless T-shirts and bathing suits. Shirts and shoes are required throughout the yacht in the evening, even if you're sitting by the pool.

Yacht Sophisticated: If you plan to dine at chef Sven Elverfeld's specialty restaurant, collared shirts — though not required — are highly recommended.

Required documents

All passengers must bring aboard a passport that's valid at least six months after the voyage's disembarkation date. Visa requirements vary by destination, and it's up to you to determine what paperwork you need to sail. The line recommends that passengers coordinate visa requests with Pinnacle Travel Document Systems at 1-888-838-4867.

There is no need to tip the staff on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessels. A service charge — except for spa treatments and salon appointments — is included in the cruise fare. Of course, feel free to tip any crew member that goes above and beyond during your voyage.

Related: Cruise ship gratuity, service charge and tipping guide

Wi-Fi is included in the cruise fare. Early reports indicate that it's stable and some have even taken Zoom calls from their suites.

Carry-on drinks policy

You can bring wine aboard the yacht. However, there will be a $20 corkage fee if you enjoy it in a dining room. You can't bring liquor aboard.

Smoking policy

There is only one place to go on the ship if you want to smoke (and that includes e-cigarettes): The Humidor on Deck 10. You can't smoke anywhere else — not even on an open deck. If the smell of smoke is detected in your suite, you will be tagged with a $1,000 cleaning fee.

Pressing, laundry and dry-cleaning services are available upon request through in-suite services for an additional cost. A self-service Guest Launderette is located on Deck 9, where an iron, washer, dryer and detergent will be available at no additional cost.

Related: Everything you need to know about cruise ship laundry services

Electrical outlets

Suites have both 230v and 120v outlets plus USB charging capabilities.

The U.S. dollar is the official currency of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. When you board, you'll put down a credit card to which all of your onboard purchases will be charged.

Drinking age

According to the line's ticket contract, "Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served wine and beer, and at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages other than wine and beer. When docked or anchored in U.S. ports, or within the U.S. territorial sea, guests must be at least 21 years old to be served any alcoholic beverage."

The loyalty program

You can earn and burn Marriott points on Evrima sailings.

The good news first: Marriott Bonvoy members earn 5 points per $1 spent on cruise fares as well as hotel packages at participating Marriott hotels booked through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

You'll also earn one elite night credit for each night you sail. Note that the passenger paying for the cruise will earn the points and elite night credits.

Now for the not-so-hot news: Redemption rates aren't terrific. Redeem 180,000 points for $1,000 off your cruise fare. You can then spend increments of 90,000 points to get an additional $500 off.

TPG values Marriott points at $0.84 each. That means we'd prefer to use 180,000 points for redemptions that would cost $1,512 or more in cash. The offer to use points on a sailing is below our preferred threshold.

However, sometimes RCYC will offer a more lucrative special promotion; for example, book select sailings and earn 75,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points in addition to what you'll earn per dollar paid on the cruise fare. Check the "Offers" tab of the line's website to check for deals like that.

If you are a Marriott elite, here's what you can expect onboard.

What it costs

As you may imagine, you can't book a yacht experience on a shoestring budget, but there are some good values to be had during The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's first sailing season. For a luxury experience of this caliber, expect to pay about $700 to $900 per person per night for Caribbean sailings and from about $1,100-plus per person per night for Mediterranean itineraries.

Maybe this will change in the future, but the line's cruise fares aren't solo traveler-friendly. All suites carry a 200% single supplement (i.e., you will pay double the per-person rate based on double occupancy when you travel in a cabin alone).

Staterooms can accommodate third and fourth guests at a rate of 50% of the first and second berth rate. Those additional guests must be under 14. Note that a limited number of roll-away beds are available upon request.

You'll pay 25% of the first and second berth for infants and toddlers 6 months to 2 years old when reserved as the third berth in a suite. A parent or guardian who's 21 or older must accompany any child. Note that on voyages with three or more consecutive days at sea, the minimum age for children is one year. Children under the age of 5 cannot board the Zodiacs.

How to book

At TPG, we recommend that travelers always use a travel agent that specializes in cruise travel to book their cruises. Using a knowledgeable travel agent won't cost you a penny, and it can provide many advantages. First and foremost, travel agents understand the nuances of each cruise line and ship and can recommend the best options for you, from which stateroom to select to the perfect itinerary. Travel agents also often get access to special reduced cruise fares or perks that can add a lot of value to your sailing. If something goes wrong, you've got an ally that can work directly with the cruise line on your behalf for a resolution.

If you don't use a travel agent, you can book directly through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Just give them a call or shoot them an email, and they will match you with an internal cruise adviser.

Or, you can book your voyage online. There are all sorts of online travel agents and discounters from which to choose.

You can even book a Ritz-Carlton yacht adventure through Delta's SkyMiles Cruises. For example, at press time, you can book a seven-night Central America voyage aboard Evrima for $5,400 per person. Bonuses include $1,000 in travel credits to get to/from the ship (that can be used on things such as an upgrade to first-class seats, a limo transfer and pier parking), and you can earn up to 10,000 SkyMiles.

No matter which method you use to book your voyage, maximize your credit card points when paying for the sailing by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases . This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which offers 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on dining.

And, of course, you may want to use the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card , Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card or Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card .

Bottom line

Pairing The Ritz's long history in the luxury hospitality market with small-ship cruising is a big win for cruisers. The line's participation in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program further sets it apart from other lines that don't have a points partner in the hotel space. While the redemption rate isn't amazing, we still call it a win to be able to book a cruise with points.

Epicurean Experiences are food-centric excursions that could include cooking classes or a visit to a winery.

Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Program

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection participates in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program , so there are opportunities to either earn or use Marriott points for one of these luxury cruises.

Marriott Bonvoy members can earn 5 points per $1 spent on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fares and any hotel packages,  including participating Marriott locations booked through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Additionally, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn Elite Night Credits through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection to earn higher Marriott Bonvoy status. A member can earn 1 elite night for each night spent on a yacht plus any nights at participating Marriott hotels booked through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as part of a package.

Marriott Bonvoy points can be redeemed for 0.56 cents apiece toward a sailing with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . Since we value Marriott Bonvoy points at ~0.7 apiece , you won’t be getting exceptional value using your points this way, but it’s always good to have the option.

If you decide to redeem points for a yacht sailing, you’ll need to do it in specified increments. To start, you can redeem 180,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for $1,000 in savings on the cruise fare. Then points can be redeemed in increments of 90,000 for a $500 savings. Points won’t cover the cost of taxes, fees, and port charges.

Marriott Bonvoy elite members are eligible for additional benefits when sailing with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

This can be an easy way to earn Marriott Bonvoy Silver, Gold, or Platinum status so you can take advantage of the onboard benefits.

Our luxury concierge can share the full brochure with you. Feel free to contact us anytime, as we are official Preferred Partners of Four Seasons, so we can offer additional free benefits on these voyages.

Of course, most of our clients have a specific routing in mind, but if you are open to suggestion, we outline the cheaper routings below.

Four Seasons Yacht Pool From Above

What’s The Price Of A Four Seasons Yacht Cruise?

We have priced up a number of voyages for our clients. Prices vary per cruise, but the least expensive suite for a cruise around the Caribbean starts at around $20,000 USD per suite per voyage. These Caribbean voyages are generally cheaper than their Mediterranean counterparts.

The first Caribbean itineraries feature seven nights of exploration through the most exciting yachting destinations, including Saint Barthélemy (St Barths), Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao and Aruba.

The first Grand Mediterranean voyages will begin in March 2026 and include sailings through Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye. The Mediterranean itinerary will also highlight the Greek Isles, with stops in Athens, Ios, Santorini, Milos, and more. Guests will explore under-the-radar islands steeped in culture and history, offering a variety of experiences that go above and beyond the ordinary of Mediterranean sailings.

Four Seasons Yacht Swim Deck

One of our favorite Mediterranean voyages runs from 20 March to 28 March 2026, with fares starting from $29,500 per suite per voyage in USD and routing from Malaga — Menorca — La Joliette — Saint Tropez — Isola Di Ponza — Trapani — Gozo — Valletta.

We also like their Greek island voyage, as it stops at lots of small islands that would be fun to visit. It sails with departures from 5 April to 17 2026. Fares start from $24,500 USD per suite per voyage. This voyage routes from Athens, where you can stay at the magnificent Four Seasons Athens, routing via Spetsai — iOS — Santorini – Agios Nikolaos – Yalikavak – Bodrum – Cesme, and ending up in Istanbul.

This latter Athens to Istanbul itinerary is a great one as you can stop by the Four Seasons Athens and the Four Seasons in Istanbul at the start and end of your trip. We have compared which of the two Istanbul hotels is the best:

Best Four Seasons In Istanbul: Bosphorus Vs Sultanahmet

Best Four Seasons In Istanbul: Bosphorus Vs Sultanahmet

Recommended Post In "Tips"

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul At Sultanahmet is a very well-located luxury hotel in the middle of the major tourist sites. It's a beautiful and unique property with a lot of character. The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul At The Bosphorus is right on the waterfront and has staggering waterside views. Both properties offer two of the best hotels in Istanbul, but which should you choose? Which is the best Four Seasons in Istanbul: Bosphorus vs. Sultanahmet?

That said, the Caribbean cruises offer the best value if you want to experience the Four Seasons ship. The first Caribbean cruise is due to set sail on January 25, 2026 and runs through to February 1, 2026. This cruise costs $29,900 USD per suite per voyage and starts in Barbados, routing via — Marina Day Mayreau — St Lucia – Martinique – Antigua and ending up in Aruba.

What’s The Cheapest Cabin?

The Sea View Suite offers the best value on these cruises and offers a stunning main bedroom pictured below, along with a generous decked balcony with an L-shaped sofa and a hugely comfy lounger chair.

Four Seasons Yacht Sea View Suite

The largest suites on this ship are enormous. The Loft Suite includes an audacious atrium lounge with towering glass windows and a marvelous deck with its own private pool. This extravagant suite could easily fit a large family as it is comprised of 3 bedrooms along with its own gym and splash pool.

Four Seasons Yacht loft Suite At Night

The Funnel Suite is the most luxurious accommodation aboard the ship. It spans four levels and encompasses over 9,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor living space. It includes a private wading pool and an exclusive spa area. Offering vertical and horizontal connectivity, this suite presents one of the largest continuously connected living spaces at sea. Its floor-to-ceiling wraparound curved glass window modules, featuring the largest contiguous piece of glass at sea, offer breathtaking 280-degree views.

Following on from our review of the new and exclusive Ritz-Carlton Yacht Evrima, which we visited on a recent stay in Monte-Carlo, I am delighted to share that Four Seasons is launching a similarly luxurious collection of yachts. We are excited to book our luxury concierge clients onto these yachts as we are official Preferred Partners of Four Seasons, so we are able to offer additional free benefits on these voyages. Four Seasons Yachts brings together an unparalleled group of partners.

Experience On Board

The inaugural Four Seasons Yacht will feature 95 suites with terrace decks, ranging from 100 square feet for the deluxe suite to nearly 5,000 square feet for the expansive Funnel Suite, which is the Yacht’s most spacious accommodation.

An innovative highlight of this yacht is its onboard transverse marina, granting guests effortless access to various water sports activities. This pioneering marina design incorporates expansive openings from port to starboard, featuring generous platforms and tiered lounging decks on both sides.

Guests can indulge in exclusive sailing, snorkeling, and windsurfing experiences. Additionally, the ship offers rentable custom-crafted “sea limousines” for transfers, coastal tours, and a pair of beach landers, enhancing the signature marina experience, accessible at most anchor ports.

Four Seasons Yacht Main Pool

Yet another remarkable feature is the canoe aft deck, boasting a 66-foot pool, making it one of the largest at sea, and serving as a focal point for guests to gather. This salt-water pool is equipped with a swift draining system, allowing the floor to be raised and transformed into a versatile multi-function area. This adaptable space can accommodate various events such as performances, fashion shows, and weddings, among other possibilities.

Other luxury yacht options include the Ritz-Carlton Yachts , which has launched numerous luxury ships. A trip on one of these is also worth considering for the luxury traveler.

Tour The Ritz-Carlton Cruise, Where a One-Week Trip Can Cost $6,400 Per Person

By Katherine McLaughlin

Exterior of Evrima

The Ritz-Carlton cruise has finally set sail, according to a press release from the company. Evrima, the first of three superyachts designed and built for the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , began its maiden voyage on October 15, sailing from Barcelona, Spain, to Nice, France, over a seven-day trip. Launching the boat has been a long time coming, as ongoing supply chain issues delayed the vessel’s construction for over three years, much to the dismay of some . “The Ritz-Carlton has long been rooted in innovation and service excellence, guided by a commitment to be at the forefront of delivering transformative travel experiences,” Chris Gabaldon, senior vice president for luxury brands at Marriott International, said in a statement. “As we continue to evolve our legendary brand, we could not be more excited to give our guests the opportunity to experience the Ritz-Carlton in a new way.”

An outdoor deck offers impressive views of the ocean.

The luxury hotel brand hopes to combine the lifestyle of a Ritz-Carlton resort with the “casual freedom” of yacht. Unsurprisingly, the cruise ship is branded as an überluxe experience, complete with an onboard Ritz-Carlton spa, a nightclub, infinity pool, and wine vault, among other amenities. The 149 suites are all decked out with private terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows for exquisite views of the ocean. Each room also comes with a king-size bed, double-vanity bathrooms, and luxury linens. For an even grander experience, travelers can book loft-style suites that span two floors, or the 1,091-square-foot owner’s suite, which comes with a private hot tub.

Mistral is one of the dining options onboard.

Still, a trip with the Ritz doesn’t come cheap. Caribbean voyages start at $5,100 per week per person, and Mediterranean voyages at $6,400 per person, according to CNN . For the hefty price, the brand is committed to offering an experience worth the ticket. While onboard, guests will have access to multiple fine dining locations, a gym, access to water sports from the yacht’s marina, performances from musicians, and expert-lead talks and lectures.

At 623 feet, the vessel is smaller than other similar offerings—for example, most vessels in the Carnival Cruise Line are upwards of 900 feet—but the Ritz-Carlton cruise believes this works in their favor. The company claims to have some of the largest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios—the boat can hold up to 298 passengers at a time.

All rooms come with a king-size bed and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Depending on the season, Evrima will travel through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The boat will stop at both intimate and signature ports of call, and the brand promises that no two itineraries will ever be the same.

See Four Seasons' upcoming ultra-luxury cruise with a $350,000-a-week suite bigger than most homes

  • Four Seasons says it will begin sailing an  ultra-luxury yacht cruise in January 2026.
  • The 222-guest vessel would have 95 spacious suites and 11 dining options — but food wouldn't be free.
  • The largest suite would have four floors and bedrooms, a spa, and a price of $350,000 per sailing.

Insider Today

Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

The company says the 95-suite vessel will debut in January 2026 and cost a minimum of $20,000 per weeklong sailing.

For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry.

The ultra-plush 14-deck Four Seasons I is scheduled for 19 voyages in 2026 to more than 130 Caribbean and Mediterranean ports.

Reservations opened two weeks ago. Those interested can register to join a waitlist or book through a travel agent.

So far, "sales have been very encouraging, and the demand is exciting to see," Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations for Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, told Business Insider in a statement. The company is a joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Renderings make the Four Seasons I look as opulent as the brand's land-based properties.

Four Seasons says its vessel will have 95 suites ranging from 537 to 9,975 square feet, some with three bedrooms.

The smallest suite starts at $19,700 for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Athens, Greece.

No windowless interior cabins here: Like other ultra-luxe cruises, the suites would all have terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Customers could expect upscale amenities like a walk-in closet, down-filled duvets and pillows, and marble dual vanity bathrooms, per Four Seasons.

The most premium suites would also feature additional accommodations for "personal assistants," such as au pairs or security personnel.

Some options, like the 7,952-square-foot Loft Suite, could be adjoined with seven other cabins to accommodate up to 20 people.

Without connecting cabins, the Loft Suite would already have three bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and a sauna.

Others, like the largest Funnel Suite, would have its own spa and kitchen.

Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel , will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms.

Not to mention the private elevator, pool, and $350,000-a-voyage price tag.

Accommodations of this price and size are generally unheard of in the cruise industry.

Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option.

Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest.

Royal Caribbean and other mass-market cruise lines are beloved, in part, for their unlimited complimentary food options.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fare also covers caviar, foie gras, and Champagne.

But don't expect any of these to be free on the Four Seasons I.

Breakfast would be complimentary. Lunch, dinner, and booze would not.

The vessel's 11 restaurants and lounges would be priced similarly to Four Seasons' on-land properties. (A dinner entrée at its resort on the Caribbean island of Nevis — also one of the ship's destinations — ranges from $34 to $163.)

The pricing structure may sound odd to most cruise traditionalists. (Hey, at least WiFi would be "free.")

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

But some of the ship's amenities could look familiar: Like most cruise liners, the Four Seasons I would have a pool, spa, and clubs for children and teens.

The company also promises a lounge and marina that will open onto the water, giving guests direct access to activities like snorkeling or windsurfing.

Four Seasons Yachts plans to take delivery of its $399 million vessel, now being built by famed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, in late 2025.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

A second Fincantieri-built ship would join the hospitality company's fleet the following year. The next vessel would cost more than 400 million euros, about $429.2 million, Four Seasons says.

This isn’t Four Seasons' first foray into itinerary-based vacations.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

The company has also found "tremendous success" in its private jet-based "cruises," Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told BI in a statement.

Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour. Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands."

But its new ultra-luxe cruise arm would be entering an increasingly crowded luxury market, soon to be dominated by like-minded hospitality giants.

ritz carlton yacht cruise prices

High-end Aman Resorts and Orient Express plan to launch their own luxury cruises in 2027 and 2026, respectively.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025.

Interested in a hotelier-owned vacation at sea but don't want to pay the luxury price tag? Margaritaville's cruise is an affordable $75 for two nights.

Ritz-Carlton Expanding Its Reach

  • April 12, 2024

Ilma

Depending on how it’s measured, The Ritz-Carlton companies have more than a century of hospitality experience, including some two restaurants on early 20th Century ocean liners.

In summer 2024, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection launches its second ultra-luxury vessel, joining the 2023-launched Evrima.

CEO Jim Murren said the cruise line has built on its strategic partnerships and internal expertise to craft a product worthy of expanding on with the new ship.

“This is an exciting chapter for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and I am honored to be a part of a journey that holds incredible potential for creating lasting value for our guests and continues to shape the future of luxury travel,” Murren said. “Our success is driven by a collective team of talented and passionate individuals. With a strong leadership team in place, coupled with the invaluable support of our partner at Marriott and our dedicated shareholders, we are strategically positioned for long-term success and growth.

The Ilma, Ritz-Carlton’s new 46,750-ton, 448-passenger vessel, debuts from Monte Carlo Sept. 2 on a slow-paced seven-night cruise to Rome. A full day in San Tropez, Canne, Bastia, and Sardinia may be outshone by an overnight call in Livorno where guests can wander the hilltop vineyards or take day trips to Florence.

The Ilma continues to sail from Rome, Athens, and Barcelona until autumn when she repositions to Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale. The Ilama sails from San Juan and Barbados through late March 2025 before sailing to Lisbon via Fort Lauderdale. She sails the Mediterranean through June before heading north, first to Portsmouth, England, then Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and eventually Reykjavik in August.

By September, she’s back in Rome via Lisbon and Barcelona for Mediterranean cruising through October.

Evrima & Luminara

The 298-passenger Evrima spends its second summer in the Mediterranean, then in late October sails for warm weather in the Caribbean via the Canary Islands.

Winter has the Evrima sailing from Barbados, Curaçao, San Juan and Fort Lauderdale. In April she repositions from Florida to the Mediterranean, first Lisbon then Barcelona.

Spring and summer 2025 finds her  on deep central-Med dives from Venice and Athens. On Halloween, the Evrima departs Barcelona on a 13-night cruise to San Juan with nine sea days and two calls, Gibraltar and Road Town, British Virgin Islands.

The 452-passenger, 46,750-ton Luminara debuts from Rome on July 31, 2025 on a seven-night itinerary that, like Ilma’s debut, overnight’s in Livorno.

August and early September anchors in Taormina, Amalfi, Sorrento, Portofino, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Saint Tropez, Collioure, and Milos, also calling in Valletta, Siracusa, Mahón, Mallorca, and Chania.

In September she sails seven-night Greek isle and Turkish voyages from Athens

Linear Sum Assignment Solver

This section describes the linear sum assignment solver , a specialized solver for the simple assignment problem, which can be faster than either the MIP or CP-SAT solver. However, the MIP and CP-SAT solvers can handle a much wider array of problems, so in most cases they are the best option.

Cost matrix

The costs for workers and task are given in the table below.

The following sections present a Python program that solves an assignment problem using the linear sum assignment solver.

Import the libraries

The code that imports the required library is shown below.

Define the data

The following code creates the data for the program.

The array is the cost matrix , whose i , j entry is the cost for worker i to perform task j . There are four workers, corresponding to the rows of the matrix, and four tasks, corresponding to the columns.

Create the solver

The program uses the linear assignment solver, a specialized solver for the assignment problem.

The following code creates the solver.

Add the constraints

The following code adds the costs to the solver by looping over workers and tasks.

Invoke the solver

The following code invokes the solver.

Display the results

The following code displays the solution.

The output below shows the optimal assignment of workers to tasks.

The following graph shows the solution as the dashed edges in the graph. The numbers next to the dashed edges are their costs. The total wait time of this assignment is the sum of the costs for the dashed edges, which is 265.

In graph theory, a set of edges in a bipartite graph that matches every node on the left with exactly one node on the right is called a perfect matching .

The entire program

Here is the entire program.

Solution when workers can't perform all tasks

In the previous example, we assumed that all workers can perform all tasks. But this not always the case - a worker might be unable to perform one or more tasks for various reasons. However, it is easy to modify the program above to handle this.

As an example, suppose that worker 0 is unable to perform task 3. To modify the program to take this into account, make the following changes:

  • Change the 0, 3 entry of the cost matrix to the string 'NA' . (Any string will work.) cost = [[90, 76, 75, 'NA'], [35, 85, 55, 65], [125, 95, 90, 105], [45, 110, 95, 115]]
  • In the section of the code that assigns costs to the solver, add the line if cost[worker][task] != 'NA': , as shown below. for worker in range(0, rows): for task in range(0, cols): if cost[worker][task] != 'NA': assignment.AddArcWithCost(worker, task, cost[worker][task]) The added line prevents any edge whose entry in the cost matrix is 'NA' from being added to the solver.

After making these changes and running the modified code, you see the following output:

Notice that the total cost is higher now than it was for the original problem. This is not surprising, since in the original problem the optimal solution assigned worker 0 to task 3, while in the modified problem that assignment is not allowed.

To see what happens if more workers are unable to perform tasks, you can replace more entries of the cost matrix with 'NA' , to denote additional workers who can't perform certain tasks:

When you run the program this time, you get a negative result:

This means there is no way to assign workers to tasks so that each worker performs a different task. You can see why this is so by looking at the graph for the problem (in which there are no edges corresponding to values of 'NA' in the cost matrix).

Since the nodes for the three workers 0, 1, and 2 are only connected to the two nodes for tasks 0 and 1, it not possible to assign distinct tasks to these workers.

The Marriage Theorem

There is a well-known result in graph theory, called The Marriage Theorem , which tells us exactly when you can assign each node on the left to a distinct node on the right, in a bipartite graph like the one above. Such an assignment is called a perfect matching . In a nutshell, the theorem says this is possible if there is no subset of nodes on the left (like the one in the previous example ) whose edges lead to a smaller set of nodes on the right.

More precisely, the theorem says that a bipartite graph has a perfect matching if and only if for any subset S of the nodes on the left side of the graph, the set of nodes on the right side of the graph that are connected by an edge to a node in S is at least as large as S.

Optimization in SciPy

SciPy is a Python library that is available for free and open source and is used for technical and scientific computing. It is a set of useful functions and mathematical methods created using Python’s NumPy module.

Features of SciPy:

  • Creating complex programs and specialized applications is a benefit of building SciPy on Python.
  • SciPy contains varieties of sub-packages that help to solve the most common issue related to Scientific Computation.
  • SciPy users benefit from the inclusion of new modules created by programmers all around the world in a variety of software-related fields.
  • Easy to use and understand as well as fast computational power.
  • It can operate on an array of NumPy libraries.

Sub-packages of SciPy:

In this article, we will learn the scipy.optimize sub-package.

This package includes functions for minimizing and maximizing objective functions subject to given constraints. Let’s understand this package with the help of examples.

SciPy – Root Finding

func : callable The function whose root is required. It must be a function of a single variable of the form f(x, a, b, c, . . . ), where a, b, c, . . . are extra arguments that can be passed in the args parameter. x0 : float, sequence, or ndarray Initial point from where you want to find the root of the function. It will somewhere near the actual root. Our initial guess is 0.

Import the optimize.newton package using the below command. Newton package contains a function that will calculate the root using the Newton Raphson method . Define a function for the given objective function. Use the newton function. This function will return the result object which contains the smallest positive root for the given function f1.

SciPy – Linear Programming

Maximize : Z = 5x + 4y Constraints : 2y ≤ 50 x + 2y ≤ 25 x + y ≤ 15 x ≥ 0 and y ≥ 0

Import the optimize.linprog module using the following command. Create an array of the objective function’s coefficients. Before that convert the objective function in minimization form by multiplying it with a negative sign in the equation. Now create the two arrays for the constraints equations. One array will be for left-hand equations and the second array for right-hand side values.

Use the linprog inbuilt function and pass the arrays that we have created an addition mention the method.

This function will return an object that contains the optimal answer for the given problem.

SciPy – Assignment Problem

A city corporation has decided to carry out road repairs on main four arteries of the city. The government has agreed to make a special grant of Rs. 50 lakh towards the cost with a condition that repairs are done at the lowest cost and quickest time. If the conditions warrant, a supplementary token grant will also be considered favourably. The corporation has floated tenders and five contractors have sent in their bids. In order to expedite work, one road will be awarded to only one contractor.                                                                      Cost of Repairs ( Rs in lakh)            Contractors R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 C1 9 14 19 15 13 C2 7 17 20 19 18 C3 8 18 21 18 17 C4 10 12 18 19 18 C5 10 15 21 16 15 Find the best way of assigning the repair work to the contractors and the costs. If it is necessary to seek supplementary grants, what should be the amount sought?

In this code, we required the NumPy array so first install the NumPy module and then import the required modules. Create a multidimensional NumPy array of given data. Use the optimize.linear_sum_assignment() function. This function returns two NumPy arrays (Optimal solution) – one is the row ( Contactors) and the second is the column ( Corresponding Repair Cost).

Use the sum() function and calculate the total minimum optimal cost.

How the assignment will be done can be concluded below from the obtained data.

  • Contractor C1 will assign road 1 with a repair cost of 13Rs Lakh.
  • Contractor C2 will assign road 2 with a repair cost of 7RS lakh.
  • Contractor C3 will assign road 3 with a repair cost of 21RS lakh.
  • Contractor C4 will assign road 4 with a repair cost of 12RS lakh.
  • Contractor C5 will assign road 5 with a repair cost of 16RS lakh.

Hence Final Minimal cost  will be,

SciPy – Minimize

Broyden-fletcher-goldfarb-shanno ( bfgs ).

This algorithm deals with the Minimization of a scalar function of one or more variables. The BFGS algorithm is one of the most widely used second-order algorithms for numerical optimization, and it is frequently used to fit machine learning algorithms such as the logistic regression algorithm.

Objective Function: z = sin( X ) + cos( Y )

SciPy – curve_fit

Curve fitting requires that you define the function that maps examples of inputs to outputs like Machine Learning supervised learning . The mapping function can have a straight line ( Linear Regression ), a Curve line ( Polynomial Regression ), and much more. Project description

A Python module to solve the linear sum assignment problem (LSAP) efficiently. Extracted from SciPy, and modified to minimal memory cost.

Description

This module is useful in cases when you need an efficient LSAP solver on very large cost_matrix and limited memory.

For a cost_matrix with dtype float64 has shape of 30000*30000, it needs 30000*30000*8 / 1024**3 = 6.7GB memory to store it. In scipy.optimite.linear_sum_assignment, it will first convert it to float64 contiguous numpy 2-D array, then do a copy, and finally starts the solver. So, the actual memory cost is at least 6.7*2 = 13.4GB. if the origin cost_matrix does not match, for example a float32 2-D array, the first step here will cause one extra copy, increases the actual memory cost to 6.7/2+6.7*2 = 16.75GB.

In this module, When input cost_matrix is a contiguous numpy 2-D array, the solver can run on it directly without any copy. Also, cost_matrix can use small dtype like float32 to half reduce memory, so 3.35GB memory is enough.

Notice: when nr > nc, scipy.optimize.linear_sum_assignment will copy then transpose and rearrange cost matrix so keeps memory access locality, but this module do not do this, so it is about 2x slower in this situation. For nr <= nc, this module has almost no performance drop, so you can manually construct a transposed cost matrix for this module, and manually swap row_ind and col_ind result if nr > nc to get better performance.

The subrows and subcols arguments allow solver run on only a subgroup of row and cols on cost_matrix. The result should be same as scipy.optimize.linear_sum_assignment(cost_matrix[np.ix_(subrows, subcols)]), but it avoids the expensive construct of sub cost_matrix.

The LSAP solver copied from SciPy is also licensed under the 3-clause BSD license.

Some files copied from minilsap are also licensed under the 3-clause BSD license.

Solving Assignment Problem using Linear Programming in Python

Learn how to use Python PuLP to solve Assignment problems using Linear Programming.

In earlier articles, we have seen various applications of Linear programming such as transportation, transshipment problem, Cargo Loading problem, and shift-scheduling problem. Now In this tutorial, we will focus on another model that comes under the class of linear programming model known as the Assignment problem. Its objective function is similar to transportation problems. Here we minimize the objective function time or cost of manufacturing the products by allocating one job to one machine.

If we want to solve the maximization problem assignment problem then we subtract all the elements of the matrix from the highest element in the matrix or multiply the entire matrix by –1 and continue with the procedure. For solving the assignment problem, we use the Assignment technique or Hungarian method, or Flood’s technique.

The transportation problem is a special case of the linear programming model and the assignment problem is a special case of transportation problem, therefore it is also a special case of the linear programming problem.

In this tutorial, we are going to cover the following topics:

Assignment Problem

A problem that requires pairing two sets of items given a set of paired costs or profit in such a way that the total cost of the pairings is minimized or maximized. The assignment problem is a special case of linear programming.

For example, an operation manager needs to assign four jobs to four machines. The project manager needs to assign four projects to four staff members. Similarly, the marketing manager needs to assign the 4 salespersons to 4 territories. The manager’s goal is to minimize the total time or cost.

Problem Formulation

A manager has prepared a table that shows the cost of performing each of four jobs by each of four employees. The manager has stated his goal is to develop a set of job assignments that will minimize the total cost of getting all 4 jobs.

Assignment Problem

Initialize LP Model

In this step, we will import all the classes and functions of pulp module and create a Minimization LP problem using LpProblem class.

Define Decision Variable

In this step, we will define the decision variables. In our problem, we have two variable lists: workers and jobs. Let’s create them using  LpVariable.dicts()  class.  LpVariable.dicts()  used with Python’s list comprehension.  LpVariable.dicts()  will take the following four values:

  • First, prefix name of what this variable represents.
  • Second is the list of all the variables.
  • Third is the lower bound on this variable.
  • Fourth variable is the upper bound.
  • Fourth is essentially the type of data (discrete or continuous). The options for the fourth parameter are  LpContinuous  or  LpInteger .

Let’s first create a list route for the route between warehouse and project site and create the decision variables using LpVariable.dicts() the method.

Define Objective Function

In this step, we will define the minimum objective function by adding it to the LpProblem  object. lpSum(vector)is used here to define multiple linear expressions. It also used list comprehension to add multiple variables.

Define the Constraints

Here, we are adding two types of constraints: Each job can be assigned to only one employee constraint and Each employee can be assigned to only one job. We have added the 2 constraints defined in the problem by adding them to the LpProblem  object.

Solve Model

In this step, we will solve the LP problem by calling solve() method. We can print the final value by using the following for loop.

From the above results, we can infer that Worker-1 will be assigned to Job-1, Worker-2 will be assigned to job-3, Worker-3 will be assigned to Job-2, and Worker-4 will assign with job-4.

In this article, we have learned about Assignment problems, Problem Formulation, and implementation using the python PuLp library. We have solved the Assignment problem using a Linear programming problem in Python. Of course, this is just a simple case study, we can add more constraints to it and make it more complicated. You can also run other case studies on Cargo Loading problems , Staff scheduling problems . In upcoming articles, we will write more on different optimization problems such as transshipment problem, balanced diet problem. You can revise the basics of mathematical concepts in  this article  and learn about Linear Programming  in this article .

Calculates a maximum weight matching if true.

An array of row indices and one of corresponding column indices giving the optimal assignment. The cost of the assignment can be computed as cost_matrix[row_ind, col_ind].sum() . The row indices will be sorted; in the case of a square cost matrix they will be equal to numpy.arange(cost_matrix.shape[0]) .

for sparse inputs

The linear sum assignment problem [1] is also known as minimum weight matching in bipartite graphs. A problem instance is described by a matrix C, where each C[i,j] is the cost of matching vertex i of the first partite set (a “worker”) and vertex j of the second set (a “job”). The goal is to find a complete assignment of workers to jobs of minimal cost.

Formally, let X be a boolean matrix where \(X[i,j] = 1\) iff row i is assigned to column j. Then the optimal assignment has cost

where, in the case where the matrix X is square, each row is assigned to exactly one column, and each column to exactly one row.

This function can also solve a generalization of the classic assignment problem where the cost matrix is rectangular. If it has more rows than columns, then not every row needs to be assigned to a column, and vice versa.

This implementation is a modified Jonker-Volgenant algorithm with no initialization, described in ref. [2] .

New in version 0.17.0.

lap: Linear Assignment Problem solver

lap is a linear assignment problem solver using Jonker-Volgenant algorithm for dense (LAPJV [1]) or sparse (LAPMOD [2]) matrices.

Both algorithms are implemented from scratch based solely on the papers [1,2] and the public domain Pascal implementation provided by A. Volgenant [3].

In my tests the LAPMOD implementation seems to be faster than the LAPJV implementation for matrices with a side of more than ~5000 and with less than 50% finite coefficients.

[1] R. Jonker and A. Volgenant, "A Shortest Augmenting Path Algorithm for Dense and Sparse Linear Assignment Problems", Computing 38, 325-340 (1987) [2] A. Volgenant, "Linear and Semi-Assignment Problems: A Core Oriented Approach", Computer Ops Res. 23, 917-932 (1996) [3] http://www.assignmentproblems.com/LAPJV.htm

Installation

Runtime dependencies.

Running lap requires:

  • Python (2.7, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9)
  • NumPy (>=1.10.1)

In addition to above, running the tests requires:

  • SciPy, pytest, pytest-timeout

Install using pip

You can install the latest release of lap from PyPI (recommended):

Alternatively, you can install lap directly from the repository:

In some cases installing from PyPI results in building the package, in these cases make sure to check "Install from source" below.

Install from source

Install a C++ compiler (e.g., g++)

Python headers (e.g., python-dev package on Debian/Ubuntu)

Install Cython (>=0.21)

Under the root of the repo

On Windows, the build may fail if there is a mismatch between the MSVC compiler version used for the build and the version used to build Python itself. For more information see this stackoverflow answer .

Tested under Linux, OS X, Windows.

The function lapjv(C) returns the assignment cost ( cost ) and two arrays, x, y . If cost matrix C has shape N x M, then x is a size-N array specifying to which column is row is assigned, and y is a size-M array specifying to which row each column is assigned. For example, an output of x = [1, 0] indicates that row 0 is assigned to column 1 and row 1 is assigned to column 0. Similarly, an output of x = [2, 1, 0] indicates that row 0 is assigned to column 2, row 1 is assigned to column 1, and row 2 is assigned to column 0.

Note that this function does not return the assignment matrix (as done by scipy's linear_sum_assignment and lapsolver's solve dense ). The assignment matrix can be constructed from x as follows:

Equivalently, we could construct the assignment matrix from y :

Finally, note that the outputs are redundant: we can construct x from y , and vise versa:

The program uses the linear assignment solver, a specialized solver for the assignment problem. The following code creates the solver. Note: The linear sum assignment solver only accepts integer values for the weights and values. The section Using a solver with non-integer data shows how to use the solver if your data contains non-integer values.

In this step, we will solve the LP problem by calling solve () method. We can print the final value by using the following for loop. I will first describe the problem and then move to implementation. Here is the problem: I have up to N tasks and up to N individuals (in the case of this problem, N=10). Each individual has a cost of performing each task, where the min cost is $0 and the max cost is $10. It is sort of a Hungarian algorithm problem with some caveats.

@Engineero This is a late comment, but if you want gradients then you'll need the algorithm to be implemented in your auto-grad package. I.e. if tensorflow, then implement linear_sum_assignment in TF, same with torch and whatnot. And whether or not the function has a well-defined "backwards" component will depend on the algorithm itself. -

73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
