Who is this Race Yacht specialist?

Mike's professional yacht racing career includes two Volvo Ocean Race campaigns as bowman. He has achieved multiple Line Honours victories in famous yacht races around the World including most of the iconic 600nm offshore races. He was part of 5 World Record setting race crews through his professional yacht racing career. Mike currently races onboard top Race Yachts like Skorpios, Hetairos, Bullitt, Jasi, Topaz, Leopard 3 and many other top level racing campaigns. 

With over 15 years professional yacht racing experience, ranging from high performance dinghy’s through to the largest of Super Maxis, Mike has gained extensive knowledge on all racing yacht types and understands each type of race yacht and their different requirements.

Mike has managed new race yacht builds from the initial concept to their first racing regatta and he was part of the build team for Camper Emirates Team New Zealand in the Volvo Ocean. Mike then went on Boat Captain the race boat in the toughest yacht race in the world. That experience gives him extensive knowledge on race yacht build requirements for all types of race yachts no matter their racing performance. 

Mike has also worked directly under private race yacht owners and managed their various yacht racing campaigns and race crews. The yacht racing campaigns were based in various locations around the World which required a meticulous level of detail to meet the expectations of result driven owners.

Having initially studied Naval Architecture in Southampton before graduating with a degree in Marine Management, Alex went on to work with one of Europe’s leading largest brokerage houses where he remained for 15yrs as their Senior Broker. During this period, Alex also completed his first trans-Atlantic crossing as part of the World Cruising Club’s ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers). With an international reputation for the very highest professional and knowledgeable service in the specialist field of high-quality blue water and cruising yacht brokerage, Alex started Grabau International Yacht Brokerage & Conveyancing at the beginning of 2015 to continue doing what he loves best.

A fellow and full broker member of ABYA, Alex is also a long-standing member of the ABYA committee, with particular interests in the development of sale & purchase contracts and broker training. Alex has also previously sat on the British Marine Federation’s Boat Retailers and Brokerage Association (BRBA) committee and was one of the first brokers in the UK to receive the ABYA/BRBA Boat Sales Qualification which is an industry-led qualification designed to provide recognition for the professionalism of yacht brokers.

Originally from the island of Madeira, Adriana has never lived more than a few hundred metres from the sea. Having moved to the Channel Islands and then Southampton to study a medical career, Adriana is now based in Lymington and enjoys yachting on the Solent as well as walking with the office dogs in the surrounding New Forest.

Having studied Business and Finance in Cheltenham. James now brings to Grabau International a wealth of invaluable skills in the sale and marketing of high-value assets developed through a hugely successful career in high-value property sales.

With over 20 years of experience in the marine industry Mark Cameron, brings a wealth of knowledge to the business. Having sailed since he was a young child Mark pursued a career in the marine industry after leaving school. Completing vocational qualifications in Yacht and Boat Building while working part time in the Scottish marine industry, he moved to Southampton and gained a BSc Honours Degree in Yacht Manufacturing and Surveying, while also acquiring a huge amount of experience in the centre of the UK marine industry.

Moving back to Scotland he took up a junior position in the management team of one of Scotland’s busiest and most respected repair yards. During the following 15 years; working alongside some of the finest craftsmen he progressed to General Manager, assuming the role of in house Yacht Broker and in 2010 became a Full Member of ABYA.

Jascha Bach

Jascha has been a competitive regatta sailor since childhood. Moving up from Optimists through 420s and then 470s, he graduated towards yacht racing while studying law at the University of Amsterdam. Following his graduation, Jascha joined prestigious Dutch superyacht broker Van der Vliet before gaining his DOC dor Yachtbroker and becoming a sworn and certified broker in the Netherlands in 2001. In 2000, Jascha founded Bach Yachting and built the company into one of Europe’s best-known performance yacht brokerages before joining Grabau International in 2022.

Away from the office, Jascha is a highly successful yacht racer, winning the ORC Worlds in 2016 aboard his Italia Yachts 9.98, taking 3rd in the 2012 ORC worlds aboard his Salona 37 and taking several Dutch Championships with his Bach Yachting racing team. More recently, Jascha has returned to his roots and races in the Finn class at an international level, while also enjoying more leisurely cruising aboard his S&S Swan 57.

Lucio Pellegrini

Lucio was born near the famous sailor’s area of Santa Lucia in Naples, just a few steps from their prestigious yacht clubs. Having started out his sailing career aboard his father’s yachts, he went on to work as a professional yacht captain and engineer aboard a variety of different yachts in the Mediterranean, taking in a diverse range of activities including competitive regattas, deliveries and private charters.

A graduate in industrial engineering, Lucio went on to complete a masters in Yacht Design at the University of Pisa as well as more recently a diploma in Yacht Brokerage from the Maritime Training Academy. A commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster, Lucio enjoys year-round sailing around the waters of the Balearics. Lucio now splits his time between Grabau International's Palma office and Barcelona , covering all of the Balearics and Southern Spain.

Vittorio Papa

Vittorio was born in a family of seafarers and yachtsmen. International dinghy sailing wins and experiences in Olympic and highly technical sailboats, fired out Vittorio's interest for the science behind sailing and performance. He then went on to complete a master's degree with top-grade from University of Naples and an MSc from University of Southampton in Naval Architecture.

Before founding Spinta Studio in 2020, Vittorio was Senior Naval Architect for Hoek Design for seven years contributing to ground-breaking superyacht projects like Elfje, the J-Class Topaz and Svea, Meraki, the explorer MY Blue II among many others.

In 2016, he moved to Mallorca to follow more closely the evolution of the racing J-Class fleet and other superyachts programs.

Regular at most regattas and boat shows, alongside his involvement with Grabau International Palma, Vittorio is the founder of the Palma-based design & naval architecture company Spinta Studio.

A sailor since childhood, Michele trained as a lawyer before moving into the yachting sector where he has worked in marketing and communication for one of Italy’s most highly-regarded boutique yacht builders.

Matias Renlund

Matias started sailing at a young age and continued with racing for the National team of Finland. Afterwards, he continued with offshore sailing and regattas with Swan yachts. Studying Naval Science at Aland Island and continuing a career at sea with oil tankers, ice breakers and sailing passenger ships was always something he dreamt of doing. His strong marine knowledge combined with his training in the Finnish Navy Special Forces in Recon division makes him a dedicated leader and focused professional with a passion for the sea.

In addition to running Grabau International Scandinavia and subdivision in Marbella, Matias is also co-founder and managing director of Nordic Boathouse, a business specializing in high variety of blue-water sailing yachts and high quality motor yachts worldwide, also representing as the global agents for Ocean Explorer Catamarans and CMY powerboats.

Matias is based in Gothenburg,  Sweden  and splits his time between there and Grabau International Scandinavian's main office in Helsinki, Finland.

Jonas Renlund

Jonas has always been close to the water. He entered the first regatta at the age of 6. After this, he continued his ambition with sail racing with the National team of Finland. Later moving on to Yacht racing and offshore racing with an Atlantic crossing as a helmsman. Jonas left his studies at University to focus on his passion for working with boats and boating. He now combines sail racing and yacht management with yacht brokerage. He enrolled in marine officer training where he got his strong work ethic and discipline.

In addition to being a partner in Grabau International Scandinavia, Jonas is also co-founder and partner of Nordic Boathouse, a business specializing in high variety of blue-water sailing yachts and high-quality motor yachts worldwide, also representing as the global agents for Ocean Explorer Catamarans and CMY powerboats.

Aside from his work with us, Jonathan is also a practicing solicitor and partner in the renowned City of London law firm Keystone Law. In that capacity, Jonathan routinely advises marine businesses, crew and other leisure marine operators such as yacht management companies and marina owners as well as assisting banks and private individuals in the yacht and superyacht industry.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jonathan spent twelve years at sea, firstly as a deck officer with BP Shipping and then as a nuclear submarine officer in the Royal Navy. Following his qualification as a lawyer with Stephenson Harwood, Jonathan went on to set up yachting departments and hold partnerships with established marine specialist law firms including Shoosmith and Lester Aldridge (LA Marine).

Despite the three-week gap between Rounds 9 and 10 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship® the Marussia F1 Team has had little time to draw breath, embarking on a series of promotional events to reward the loyal support of its fans.

This week, while the race team conduct the Young Driver Test at Silverstone, the demonstration team are heading ‘home’ to Russia for their second year of participation in ‘Moscow City Racing’.

The event takes place on 20 and 21 July, with the demonstration runs scheduled for Sunday 21 July on the streets surrounding the Kremlin and the ‘paddock’ located close to Red Square.

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to enter the inner-sanctum - the Paddock - to soak up the atmosphere and see for themselves the intricacies of Formula 1 design and engineering.

Aside from his on-track duties, Max will participate in a range of promotional activities, taking time out to mingle with the Russian fans during autograph sessions and photo opportunities.

Supporting the Marussia F1 Team over the weekend are main event partner Liga Stavok along with additional partners Instaforex, QNet and RBC.

Max Chilton: “There have been quite a few ‘firsts’ for me in my debut season in Formula One - new racetracks, new cities, meeting new fans - and Moscow City Racing will be my very first visit to Russia. I can’t wait. From what I hear from previous events, the demonstration runs are a fantastic spectacle and the crowd is huge and very supportive.

That’s nice, because we are the only Anglo-Russian team and it is good to keep building on their love of Formula 1 before Russia gets its very own race next year in Sochi. I’m really excited about making the trip and I hope to meet as many of the Russian fans as possible, when I’m not driving through their streets!”

Moscow Street Circuit

Circuit Overview

The Formula E Championship has succeeded where many others – from Formula One to DTM – have failed, by hosting a race on the streets of Moscow. The announcement of the additional race in June 2015 was something of a coup for the race organisers and the chosen location certainly has a memorable backdrop.

Located in the shadow of the Kremlin, the track was a late addition to the schedule, only being confirmed in February 2015 after a planned race in Rio de Janeiro fell through.  Despite some difficulties in getting the track set up in the lead-up to the race, it was a largely successful affair, with Sebastian Buemi being among those to single it out for praise.

Somewhat surprisingly, it proved to be a one-off.  Despite being listed on the 2016-17 season calendar, the event was cancelled a month before the race when unforeseen circumstances related to road closures meant the circuit could not be set up.

Circuit History

The Formula E race followed a number of demonstration events held within the city, including a run in 2011 by the French EF01 Formulec electric racing car. This course was located in a similar area of the city to the ePrix but stretched further down the riverside alongside the walls of the Kremlin and also crossed the river.

When Rio's planned E-Prix fell apart in December 2014, Formula E bosses began frantic negotiations for a replacement round. Moscow had been mooted as a host city for some time, but with new urgency to confirm an event, talks accelerated. In February 2015, it was announced that the series would be coming to the Russian capital for the first time on 6 June.

The location for the circuit itself was certainly spectacular. Located in the shadow of the Kremlin, it started alongside the Moskva River before circling the site of the former Rossiya Hotel – a gigantic unloved Soviet-era monolith that was once the largest hotel in the world before being demolished in 2007. During the lap the cars also took in Staraya Square, home to the former headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, now used as the offices of the Presidential Administration of Russia.

Among the other famous buildings the racers sped by were the Gostiny Dvor merchant hall (now a fashionable exhibition centre); the iconic St Basil's Cathedral with its colourful spires; and the imposing walls of the Kremlin, making this one of the most memorable street circuits in the world.

The lap itself ran in an anti-clockwise direction from the start line, taking the cars along the northern bank of the river to the 90-degree Turn 1 left-hander.  This led onto a long straight which headed into the sweeping Turn 2 right-hander, before hard braking into Turn 3.  Here the circuit turn left through 90 degrees before a similar corner at Turn 4, followed the slightly more open radius Turn 5 right-hand corner.

The lap then opened out along the curving Turn 6 and onto a short straight ending the circuit's only right-left-right chicane, dropping slightly downhill. Turn 10, a long left hand curve, then followed, leading into the switchback hairpin sections of Turns 11 and 12.  A short straight then lead to the final corner, a 90-degree left hander.

Nelson Piquet Jr was the first and only winner of the Moscow ePrix, after he took the lead at the first turn diving inside pole sitter Jean-Eric Vergne.  The Brazilian sprinted to a good lead, which he only lost briefly during the pit stop phase, before regaining the head of the field and cruising to victory.

And that proved to the be that, with the planned return visit in 2016 never getting off the ground.  The Russian ePrix was gone as quickly as it had arrived and today there is very little sign on the streets that it ever took place.

The Moscow ePrix was located in the heart of Moscow's historic centre, next to the Kremlin and St Basil's Cathedral. International flights into Moscow arrive at one of two airports – Domodedovo or Sheremetyevo – and there are good public transport links to the city centre.

Finding where the race took place should not be difficult, located as it was in the heart of the historic and tourist-friendly part of the city. Getting about the city should also be straightforward as Moscow is served by an extensive transit network, which includes nine railway terminals, numerous trams, a monorail system and one of the deepest underground metro systems in the world, the Moscow Metro.

Tickets on the Moscow cost R40 for one journey anywhere within the system. A block of 20 tickets costs R500. The extensive bus, tram and trolleybus system is just as cheap. There are no English-language signs in the metro, so count the stops to make sure you get off at the right place.
