northern sun, below deck down under, superyacht

Inside the star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two

Television network Bravo will begin airing season two of Below Deck Down Under on 17 July, a Below Deck spin-off which follows a yacht crew over an eight-week charter season in Australia. This instalment sees Captain Jason Chambers return at the helm, cruising guests around the warm, tropical waters and colourful cays of the near-uninhabited Whitsunday Islands. Making her debut down under is Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht with an unexpected history. BOAT takes a look inside…

Delivered in 1976 under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”), Northern Sun has lived a full and fascinating life. At 50.8 metres, she was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. The transformation from ship to superyacht came in 2006 when she underwent a two-year refit, courtesy of her new owners.

Northern Sun has the hardy constitution of an explorer, marking a departure from the first season’s white boat Keri Lee III .

When her current owners undertook renovations, they were intent to elevate her to superyacht standards while still maintaining her distinctive look. Her old windlasses are still visible on the forward deck, the master cabin has retained its original camber and even the engine room looks exactly as it did when she was a research ship. "Looks" being the operative word, of course – she’s had several system upgrades since the 70s.

Interiors include natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). This dark wood furniture and wall panelling give Northern Sun her warm, traditional feel, while the cabins themselves are dotted with the owners’ collection of travel paraphernalia. It makes for an eclectic living space, with indoor sofa seating accented by authentic Persian rugs and the formal dining room and master suite fixed with guild-frame, 19th century oil paintings. Keep an eye out for one of the owners’ most coveted pieces, a 100-year-old ship’s clock which still rings out the two-hour, maritime work shift also known as "the dog watch".

Northern Sun’s main deck is dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation.

The superyacht naturally has impressive stowing capacity, with space for scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide. There are also two Laser sailboats, enabling nimbler exploration along Australia’s shallow bays and coral reefs.

The owners spent ten years cruising through Southeast Asia after Northern Sun was refitted. Using the superyacht as a base for adventures, they've scuba-dived in the Andaman Sea, kayaked in the mangrove swamps of Phang Nga Bay and explored some of Indonesia’s most remote fishing islands. In 2015, they decided to put Northern Sun on the charter market, where she quickly became one of the most popular yachts available in Thailand. Now, she’s made her way across the seas to become the breakout star of Below Deck Down Under .

Captain Jason will be joined by returning chief stew Aesha Scott, working alongside a brand-new crew.

Northern Sun is currently listed with Ocean Independence , with a weekly charter starting from $161,700 and an asking price of $15,000,000.

Yes, You Really Can Charter The Northern Sun Yacht From Below Deck Down Under

It will cost you, though.

BELOW DECK DOWN UNDER -- Pictured: Northern Sun -- (Photo by: Mark Rogers/Bravo via Getty Images)

When Captain Jason Chambers set sail for Peacock’s Below Deck Down Under Season 2 , he was in somewhat unchartered territory. Filmed at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in the stunning waters of Cairns, Australia, the latest season welcomed guests aboard the M/Y Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht that was unlike any vessel he’d ever captained in the past. “ Northern Sun is a 1977 Japanese fishing vessel that’s been converted to a luxury superyacht,” Captain Jason explains in the Season 2 premiere. “It’s the perfect vessel because, this season, we’re in Cairns, right at the foothills of the most spectacular underwater scenery you’ll ever see. It’s adventure yachting, and it’s perfect for exploration.”

You don’t have to sign up for a reality TV show to visit the 50.8-meter-long Northern Sun, though. The yacht, which began as an ice-class research vessel that analyzed marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea, is currently listed with a weekly charter starting cost of $161,700 and an asking price of $15 million. Able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 staterooms, Northern Sun includes such luxury amenities as al fresco dining, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, as well as a range of water-sport toys, allowing guests the opportunity to go scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, and more, while exploring Thailand and surrounding areas.

BELOW DECK DOWN UNDER -- Pictured: (l-r) Aesha Scott, Captain Jason Chambers -- (Photo by: Mark Roge...

In a July interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Chief Stew Aesha Scott explained why Northern Sun made Season 2 “completely different ” in allowing guests to have one-of-a-kind experiences. “The boat was smaller, it was more manageable,” she said, comparing the vessel to M/Y Thalassa BDDU ’s inaugural season. “The boat this year was a converted fishing vessel, and for me it was just so much better because Thalassa was outrageous how big it was. That was part of the stress was that it was just so big ... We’re still offering the guests a really nice five-star experience.”

Northern Sun’s laid-back feel also played a key role in Season 2. “I think altogether that it’s just kind of created a more tropical, casual kind of vibe, which I actually think was a real positive thing because the guests were just so relaxed,” Aesha added. “And [they] just got up to such mischief — which was funny most of the time. Sometimes it was annoying, but most of the time it was funny.”

Captain Jason, for his part, shared in a separate interview with the outlet that the latest installment of the original Bravo franchise flew by, either way. “I walked onto the boat, said ‘What the hell is going on?’” he joked. “And then the season ended.”

The Spring Equinox Is Here. What Does That Mean?

Equinox-Solstice-Explainer

Spring is almost here—officially, at least.

The vernal equinox arrives on Tuesday, marking the start of the spring season for the Northern Hemisphere.

But what does that actually mean? Here’s what to know about how we split up the year using the Earth’s orbit.

What is the equinox?

As the Earth travels around the sun, it does so at an angle.

For most of the year, the Earth’s axis is tilted either toward or away from the sun. That means the sun’s warmth and light fall unequally on the northern and southern halves of the planet.

During the equinox, the Earth’s axis and its orbit line up so that both hemispheres get an equal amount of sunlight.

The word equinox comes from two Latin words meaning equal and night. That’s because on the equinox, day and night last almost the same amount of time—though one may get a few extra minutes, depending on where you are on the planet.

The Northern Hemisphere’s spring—or vernal—equinox can land between March 19 and 21, depending on the year. Its fall—or autumnal—equinox can land between Sept. 21 and 24.

What is the solstice?

The solstices mark the times during the year when the Earth is at its most extreme tilt toward or away from the sun. This means the hemispheres are getting very different amounts of sunlight—and days and nights are at their most unequal.

During the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice, the upper half of the earth is tilted in toward the sun, creating the longest day and shortest night of the year. This solstice falls between June 20 and 22.

Meanwhile, at the winter solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is leaning away from the sun—leading to the shortest day and longest night of the year. The winter solstice falls between December 20 and 23.

What’s the difference between meteorological and astronomical seasons?

These are just two different ways to carve up the year.

Meteorological seasons are defined by the weather. They break down the year into three-month seasons based on annual temperature cycles. By that calendar, spring starts on March 1, summer on June 1, fall on Sept. 1 and winter on Dec. 1.

Astronomical seasons depend on how the Earth moves around the sun.

Equinoxes mark the start of spring and autumn. Solstices kick off summer and winter.

Gunmen kill 40 in attack at concert near Moscow, Islamic State claims responsibility

At least 40 people were killed and 145 wounded on Friday when camouflage-clad gunmen fired with automatic weapons on concertgoers near Moscow in one of the deadliest attacks on Russia in decades.

Islamic State, the militant group that once sought control over swathes of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group's Telegram channel said.

At least five gunmen began shooting civilians cowering in the Crocus City Hall just before Soviet-era rock group "Picnic" was about to perform to a full house at the 6,200-seat theater in a suburb west of Moscow.

Verified video showed people taking their seats in the hall then rushing for the exits as repeated gunfire echoed above screams. Other video showed men shooting at groups of people. Some victims lay motionless in pools of blood.

"Suddenly there were bangs behind us - shots. A burst of firing - I do not know what," one witness who asked not to be named told Reuters.

"A stampede began, everyone ran to the escalator," the witness said. "Everyone was screaming, everyone was running."

Russia's Federal Security Service(FSB), the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said about 40 people were killed while a regional ministry, quoted by the Tass news agency, said 145 were wounded. The FSB said extra security measures were imposed.

The death toll made it one of the worst attacks on Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege, when Islamist militants took more than 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, hostage.

Children were reported to be among the dead and injured at the concert. Dozens of ambulances arrived at the Sklifosovsky emergency care institute in Moscow.

northern sun yacht history

At Crocus City Hall, flames leapt into the sky, and plumes of black smoke rose above the venue as hundreds of blue lights from emergency vehicles flashed in the night, Reuters pictures and video showed.

Helicopters sought to douse flames that engulfed the large building, and evacuated around 100 people from the basement. The roof of the venue was collapsing, state news agency RIA said.

Russian media reported a second blast at the venue. Some outlets said gunmen barricaded themselves in the building. RIA said the gunmen were presumed to be at large.

In a post on Telegram, Islamic State said its fighters attacked on the outskirts of Moscow "killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely."

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said it was a "bloody terrorist attack" that the entire world should condemn.

The United States, European and Arab powers and many former Soviet republics expressed shock, condemned the attack and sent their condolences. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak denied any Ukrainian involvement.

Attack warning

Two weeks ago, the U.S. embassy in Russia warned that "extremists" had imminent plans for an attack in Moscow.

The embassy issued its warning several hours after the FSB said it had foiled an attack on a Moscow synagogue by a cell of Islamic State.

"While events continue to unfold, we strongly recommend that U.S. citizens in Moscow avoid the area, follow the instructions of local security services and keep an eye on local media updates," the U.S. embassy said on Friday.

President Vladimir Putin, who was on Sunday re-elected for a new six-year term, sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in 2022 and has repeatedly warned that various powers - including countries in the West - are seeking to sow chaos inside Russia.

Putin was informed in the first minutes of the attack and is regularly being updated, the Kremlin said.

"The president constantly receives information about what is happening and about the measures being taken through all relevant services. The head of state gave all the necessary instructions," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Security tightened

After the attack, Russia tightened security at airports, transport hubs and across the capital - a vast urban area of over 21 million people. All large-scale public events were canceled across the country.

"A terrible tragedy occurred in the shopping center Crocus City today," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. "I am sorry for the loved ones of the victims."

The White House said that images of the shooting were hard to watch, while Germany's foreign ministry called the images "horrific."

"...Our thoughts obviously are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack," White House spokesman John Kirby said.

Kirby said there was "no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians were involved in the shooting."

Russia's Zakharova questioned how the U.S. knew this and said Washington should immediately pass any information it had to Moscow, or stop making such statements.

What’s the Cloud Outlook for Eclipse Day? See if History Is on Your Side.

By Josh Katz ,  K.K. Rebecca Lai and William B. Davis

April 8 will be your last opportunity to see a total solar eclipse in the contiguous United States or Canada until 2044. Mexico will have to wait even longer. But if clouds fill the sky as the moon passes between the sun and Earth, your shot at seeing the spectacle could be lost.

If you have an eclipse-viewing destination in mind, enter it in the box below to see average cloud cover in the past. The Times will provide forecast data closer to April 8.

Find your location’s historical cloud cover

Source: NASA Aqua/MODIS

Note: Average cloud fraction for the eight-day period spanning April 7 through April 14, for 2004 through 2023, as derived from satellite measurements taken at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time. Eclipse calculations are adapted from the Eclipse Explorer by Fred Espenak and Chris O’Byrne.

It’s still too early to know with much certainty what the weather will be like in your area that day — cloud forecasts aren’t reliable that far in advance. But the map of cloud coverage data above, derived from satellite measurements, gives the next best thing — a historical account of where the skies are more likely to be clear on that spring Monday.

The map shows the average cloudiness — the portion of the sky covered by clouds — for April 7 through April 14 for the past 20 years, using measurements collected by the MODIS instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite.

This analysis shows that cloudiness tends to increase farther north along the path of totality, or the relatively thin strip of land where the moon will fully block the sun.

That could mean your best chance for clear skies is in Mexico, with about a 35 percent average chance of cloud cover. For those in the United States, Texas has the lowest chance of cloud cover at about 45 percent. Where you go in Texas may matter, too — historical cloud cover in Dallas is no better than it is in Cleveland.

Historical cloudiness along the center of the eclipse’s path

Note: Places are plotted according to their longitude, even if they do not lie on the centerline of the path of totality.

But historical averages aren’t an oracle. The composite map above is derived from satellite measurements taken at just one time of day — around 1:30 p.m. local time — and large-scale atmospheric dynamics like El Niño can have a big influence over cloud formation.

Ultimately, climatology — the study of weather over time — can only get you so far. What really matters is the weather on eclipse day.

About that, said Jay Anderson, a Canadian meteorologist, “It’s going to be what it’s going to be.”

Mr. Anderson runs a website, Eclipsophile, that provides detailed analysis of weather conditions to aid eclipse chasers. He says cloud forecasts usually become more reliable about a week ahead of an event and improve as the date approaches.

Even with the best forecasts, sometimes you need a bit of luck. In 2009, he directed a tour group in China to travel about 125 miles outside Shanghai to avoid bad weather. It was pouring when they reached their destination. But as the period of totality approached, the rain suddenly stopped and the clouds parted. They were able to see the total eclipse for almost five minutes.

“Sometimes the weather gods are smiling at you,” Mr. Anderson said.

Over the years, he has worked with tour companies to guide eclipse viewers to the best locations, likening eclipse viewing to storm chasing. On his trips, he has had to tell cruise captains to turn their boats around and bus drivers to search for hours to find a break in the clouds.

Even under cloudy conditions, you would still notice a sudden plunge into darkness as the moon passes in front of the sun. But you won’t be able to see all the details of the eclipse — the shadow bands, the diamond ring, the sun’s corona.

“It’s muted compared to being in the sunlight itself,” Mr. Anderson said.
