According to the seller, this vessel is in top shape. Everything is functional and in good working order. Updated batteries and thru-hulls as well as other upgrades set this boat apart from the pack. All cabin features, stove, fridge, and more are all good to go. All electronics, with the exception of the single-side-band radio, are less than 7 years old. The windlass is a Loughren-Tigres model with 275' of chain and 175' of 3/4" anchor line attached to a 55' Rocna anchor, all dating from 2018. Propane lines were replaced in 2020. Fridge is from 2017. Stock #365153 RARE 1981 Niagara 35 bluewater cruiser, updated throughout, ready to hit the high seas! This Niagara 35 is a classic built by Hinterhoeller Yachts for open water cruising. Thoughtful use of available space allows for great storage space and generates a roomy, spacious feel belowdecks not normally found in a 35-foot sailboat. This boat was built like a tank for handling any reasonable seas. Another feature rarely found in vessels of this size is a manufacturer-installed fireplace / heater which would be appreciated on adventures to the colder climes. This boat had a bottom job in 2022. In 2020, old batteries and thru-hulls were replaced with new ones. In 2019 the staysail and chain plate were replaced and radar installed. The fireplace is a wood burner and can also burn manufactured logs, coal or charcoal briquettes. It keeps the entire boat T-shirt temperature all winter long. The conventional head has been converted to a composting toilet with the holding tank space now occupied by a bank of 6 batteries along the centerline to improve the balance of the boat. The batteries are broken into a bank of 4 house batteries and 2 engine / windlass batteries. The seller is including a roller furling boom that needs only to be installed to replace the standard boom. Also included is a portable high output 40" double membrane water maker capable of producing 26-37gph of clean water and a brand new, never used, Air Line R360XL Hookah Dive System. All total, this is a great package for the cruise-minded sailor. A quality vessel at a good price. Reason for selling is not using enough.

Initially it was purchased in Houston with big plans to sail the Caribbean but life unfortunately got in the way. During that time I've refit many of the items on the boat and this is outlined above.- Yes the boat can be viewed in Key West, Florida, USA. For those that are interested message me and I'll give you the contact details of my local Key West broker.- The boat is currently Australian registered but will be de-registered as part of the sale. So the new owner can get the boat re-registered with the USCG.- Yes the boat is capable of offshore voyages, but no I wouldn't jump in this tomorrow and sail across the Pacific. Not due to any structural fault in the boat. I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Of course you would want to have had a lot of experience offshore before crossing the North Atlantic.- More images of the boat and the trips we've taken can be found at www.formosa46.com- No I will not trade for another boat unless someone has a similar size/condition vessel in Australia.- Yes the price is negotiable within reason as are the sale terms. Please contact me to discuss.- The boat is very well equipped with all the safety gear you could ever hope for and is in a good condition.

2001 J46 sailboat sail boat J-46 sailing cruiser racing fresh water. UPGRADES!

2001 J46 sailboat sail boat J-46 sailing cruiser racing fresh water. UPGRADES!

Charlevoix, Michigan

Make J Boats

Length 46.0

Beautiful, generously equipped and meticulously cared for freshwater J46 owned by senior couple. Used only for day sailing and minimal light cruising in northern Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix for only 12 four month seasons (was not launched in 2012 and 2013). Always kept in inside heated storage when not in the water for the four month summer season. It is in pristine condition. J/46 may be the only investment grade sailing yacht of its size not requiring professional crew to sail at designed performance levels…..or to maintain. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. The joy of sailing the perfect boat is, after all, a goal we believe every owner ultimately seeks. To insure that good sailing days are spent sailing rather than scrubbing and varnishing, J/46 is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. Her exquisite joinerwork is protected from the sun……below decks where it’s beauty can be preserved More photos available in this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QEllizB6x4FKTe3kGwlbjYaLgJMrQEg8x6PdVtIa14Y/pub Factory Options: Refrigeration Package: -Seafrost Mechanical Refrigeration.-Additional Plates & controls for Freezer.-Supplementary 110VAC Shore power Assist. Helped by new materials and techniques, they evolve from the joint experiences of designer, builder and owners to become state-of-the-art. J/46 is such a vessel, inheriting the proven hull shape of the J/44, an offshore blue water classic, having won the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup and Trans-Atlantic races. J/44 is the only Class of yacht ever to be given its own class start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport-Bermuda Race. To create the J/46, a foot of sailing length is added for speed; a transom swim/boarding platform for convenience; a carbon fiber mast and low VCG 6.2’ shoal draft keel for more stability; and a resin-infused, composite hull and deck for greater strength. Below decks, the choice was clear, use the same beautifully varnished cherry or teak joiner work, entertainment center and styling so highly acclaimed in our deluxe J/160. J/46 is a maxi-Ditch yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal WWaterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this sea-kindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sail plan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm. J Boats’ unique spinnaker system makes downwind sailing possible for two. A modern asymmetric spinnaker attaches to the top of the anchor roller, is contained within a cockpit-controlled snuffer, and is stored, ready-to-use, in the bow locker. The spinnaker is hoisted to the masthead, 2’ above the headstay intersect, leaving space for the snuffer to shift on a jibe. Jibing is then easy. One simply lets off one spinnaker sheet and pulls in the other.

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

+ Vessel Walkthrough

Vessel Walkthrough:

From forward, moving aft: The forward cabin contains V-Berths and the head; Up three steps, to the midship cockpit, with storage and seating on each side under a full canopy. This is a novel and interesting feature - a pleasant place upwind at anchor and away from the exhaust when under way; Through a sliding door into the pilothouse and salon; Down two steps to the galley; and Up two steps to the aft cockpit, with a seat on each side and opening transom doors.

Main Salon:

In the salon the helm station is to starboard, with an L-Shaped settee is to port around two sides of a dining table. Aft of the helm station is a raised chart table with storage under. The table can be lowered, and the settee converted to a berth. The fixed side windows offer views outside when seated. The pilothouse is ventilated with an overhead hatch, two portlights aft, a custom top-hinged window in the forward pilothouse door and a fan. The salon and galley share an air-conditioning unit.

The galley has a deep stainless-steel sink and Corian countertops, a two-burner propane cooktop, an Isotherm C130 4.6 cubic foot refrigerator, and numerous storage lockers, shelves and drawers. Ventilation is from four portlights, the hatch to the aft cockpit and the shared ventilation with the salon.

Master Stateroom:

The master and only stateroom is in the forward cabin, which is separated from the pilothouse and salon by the midship cockpit. In addition to the V-Berths and head, there is a hanging locker, a locker on the forward bulkhead, two deep drawers between the berths, full-length shelves on each side and stowage under the V-Berths. For ventilation there is an overhead hatch, three opening portlights in the forward cabin and one in the head, solar vents in the head and forward cabin, and a fan. The forward cabin has its own air conditioning unit.

At the bow, a 15kg Rocna anchor is secured on a Kingston bow roller, having a rode consisting of 125' of 5/16" Group 43 galvanized steel chain spliced to 125' of 9/16" 8-strand braid, controlled by a Maxwell R-8 windlass/capstan aft of a Maxwell chain brake.

Both cockpits are covered by canopies. The midship cockpit has a hose bib and hot/cold water shower. An Engel 58 quart cooler functions as another seat, or as a table, and stores ice, drinks, and vegetables on a rack below the opening top. A door on each side of the midship cockpit allows easy access to dinghies and floating docks. Under the seats there is storage for fenders, hoses, dock lines and life jackets.

There are two hatches in the midship cockpit sole. The aft hatch opens to the forward end of the engine space for access to fuel filters, the lube oil filter, the raw water pump impeller, oil and coolant fills, storage, and the seacock for the engine raw water intake. The forward hatch opens to a compartment containing the batteries, the inverter/charger, the solar charge controller, other electrical equipment, pumps, storage and two seacocks (one for the head discharge, the other for the head intake, air conditioning pumps and the raw water washdown pump).

At the stern cockpit, rails on the galley roof extend aft to form davits, and the transom doors open 180 degrees so as to make a convenient place from which to swim or to handle and board a dinghy. A swimming ladder attaches off the stern. The port seat contains one 20 lb. and one 10 lb. aluminum propane tank, while the starboard seat has storage underneath. The aft cockpit has a hose bib to allow washdowns and rinsing of salty feet and swimmers. A hatch in the aft cockpit sole opens for storage and access to steering gear.

Electronics and Helm:

The steering system is hydraulic. At the helm station, there is a Garmin 1040 plotter/sounder, an Icom VHF with Digital Selective Calling and AIS (receive only), a Garmin autopilot control and controls for the electric bow thruster and anchor windlass. The main electrical panel for 12V and 110V is within the helm station. Above the helm station are circuit breakers and switches for the horn, lights, VHF radio, bow thruster and windlass. On the port side of the pilothouse, above the forward window, are Gauges on the port side of the pilothouse, across from the helm station, show fuel, water and holding tank levels, the house battery bank state of charge and net input or output, and solar panel output.

Electrical:

"CAHOOTS" does not have a generator. The 415Ah house bank consists of two 6V Rolls AGM batteries in series, which are charged in three ways: either (1) by shore power, through a 50' SmartPlug cord through a Samlex 2000W inverter/charger; or (2) by the large-frame 175 A alternator on the engine, output from which goes to a Wakespeed S500 external regulator; or (3) by a 590W solar array above the midship cockpit canopy through a Victron solar charge controller.

A separate Optima 34/78/1000 (12V/800 cold cranking amps) battery starts the engine. It is combined with the house battery bank for charging from the same three sources. If the starting battery is discharged, a switch disconnects the starting battery from, and substitutes the house battery bank on, the starting circuit.

All electronics, lights, fans, pumps and the refrigerator operate on 12V. The inverter produces 110V power for household appliances, chargers and the like, available through single plugs in the galley and forward cabin, and through three plugs in the salon.

All interior lights and navigation lights are LED. There are red/white overhead lights in the galley, salon, head and forward cabin, four reading lights in the salon and two in the forward cabin, and task lighting in the galley.

A galvanic isolator is installed at the SmartPlug receptacle for the protection of underwater metal parts of the boat.

Engine Details:

The engine space is under the salon and continues forward under the aft portion of the midships cockpit. Access to the forward end of the engine (and to the remote lube oil filter, fuel filters, oil and coolant fills, the lube oil dipstick, and the raw water pump) is through the aft hatch in the midship cockpit sole. Access to the aft end of the engine (and to the stuffing box, marine gear oil filter and dipstick, and lube oil discharge pump) is through a hatch in the salon sole.

The marine gear is a ZF model 45 hydraulic unit having a 3.1:1 reduction ratio. The engine drives a 1 and3/4" stainless shaft which passes through a conventional stuffing box (made by Buck Algonquin) to a four blade 23 X 17 Michigan propeller.

The seller replaced the original waterlift muffler fabricated and installed by the builder with a stock Vetus waterlift muffler, a Vetus anti-syphon valve and a discharge hose looped to create a greater drop to the exhaust outlet.

The Isotemp hot water heats 5 gallons of water using shore power or using engine coolant when the engine is running.

Construction Details:

Nidacor (or equivalent) sandwich construction for deck, forward cabin trunk, pilothouse, internal bulkheads and hull to just above waterline, where the hull becomes solid fiberglass.

Equipment List:

Air Conditioners:

There are independent reverse-cycle air conditioning/heating units in the forward cabin (Dometic ECD6k/6,000 BTU) and in the pilothouse (salon/galley) (Dometic ECD 10k/10,000 BTU).

Anchors and Rodes:

(1) 15kg Rocna on Kingston KR 1015 bow roller, with 125' Group 43 5/16" galvanized chain, spliced to 125' of 8-strand nylon braid 9/16", stowed in the bow locker.

(2) 25lb CQR, stowed under starboard V-berth. Chain is under port V-Berth, 200' 3-strand nylon 5/8" stowed under port locker in aft cockpit.

Garmin Reactor 40; system serial #5E1027971; hydraulic pump SN 5RK00445; rudder feedback, SN 2LB013585.

Bow Thruster:

House bank made up of two Rolls S6-460 AGM batteries in series, giving 12V/415Ah (at 20 hour rate).

Start battery is an Optima 34/78-1000 having 800 cold cranking amps.

Both house and start batteries stored in boxes under the forward midships cockpit hatch.

The batteries are combined with a ML-ACR Battery Combine Relay - Blue Seas system #7622

A Balmar SG-200 battery monitor system shows the condition of the house bank (state of charge, rate of charge/discharge and other information) on a gauge above the forward port pilothouse window.

Ritchie 4", mounted below forward/port pilothouse window.

Engine, Marine Gear, Alternator and Remote Charge Controller:

Overhead lights in head, forward cabin, pilothouse and galley are Hella EuroLED 150 white/red.

Reading lights (four in pilothouse, two in forward cabin) are Hella Ponui.

Lights over galley counters are LED.

Nav/anchor lights are Hella NaviLED.

Overhead Hatches:

Vetus Magnus 4747 (18.5" x 18.5") hatches are installed in the overhead in the pilothouse and forward cabins. Each overhead hatch has an insect screen.

Inverter/Charger:

Samlex EVO-2212 (2200W/100A) is mounted near the batteries in the forward compartment under the midship cockpit. It receives output from shore power, the alternator or the solar array and charges the batteries. It also takes 12V power from the house battery bank and inverts it to 110V.

Plotter/Sounder:

Garmin GPSMAP 1042xsv having 10" screen, SN 60Y003313; transducer VDR-GEM B744V-8G. The transducer is below the hatch in the galley sole.

Propane Tanks:

20 lb. and 10 lb. made by Worthington. Purchased new in 2018. The tanks, regulator and propane supply solenoid are under the port seat in the aft cockpit.

Refrigerator:

Indel Webasto Marine Isotherm C130 operates on 12V, has a volume of 4.6 cubic feet.

Shifter/Throttle:

Spares and Supplies:

There is a spare 175a alternator, a Raritan Ph II pump, and various fuses stored off the boat. Aboard the boat are replacement fuel filters, lube oil filter, a marine gear oil replacement filter, raw water pump impellers, and engine zincs, together with supplies of lube oil, coolant and hydraulic fluid for the steering system. Battery operated strobe/electronic signal flare.

Solar System:

The solar array consists of two 295W SolarWorld rigid-frame panels mounted above the midship cockpit canopy. Each panel has 60 monocrystallinge cells with the following characteristics: Voc 40.0V; Vmpp 31.5V(DC); ISC 10.10A; module efficiency 17.59; power sorting 0Wp/+5Wp; max system voltage 1000V (DC); ISO 9001, 14001 certified. Each panel weighs 39.7 lbs. A switch above the helm station allows the output to reach, or not to reach, the charge controller. When the switch is on output from the panels goes through a Victron charge controller, which reads the state charge of the batteries and provides charging current as needed.

A Victron controller monitoring system reflects the state of the house bank and the level of charging current flowing to the house bank.

An 18" stainless steering wheel drives a Vetus hydraulic steering pump (HTP 4210R) which activates a Vetus steering ram (MTC 7210) below the aft cockpit.

Dickinson 00-2BP two burner propane cooktop. One burner is sized for pots and pans from 6" to 10" in diameter; the other burner is sized for pots and pans up to 6" in diameter. Brackets holding pots/pans in place are in the drawer above the refrigerator.

Two stuffing box wrenches stowed aft in the engine room, a box wrench fitting the engine primary fuel filter hanging forward/starboard in the engine room, and Allen wrenches for the flagstaff socket retaining screw and the marine gear oil filter housing under the forward end of the settee. Laser digital infrared thermometer.

Utensils and Galley Stuff:

Some remain in the galley drawer above the refrigerator.

ICOM M506 with Digital Selective Calling and AIS (receive only), SN 21007448/

The interior of this vessel is striking, with teak joinery that far exceeds the average build. Upon entering the companionway, there is a u-shaped galley to port and a spacious quarterberth and nav station to starboard.

The centerline table folds out to accommodate 6 people easily, and there is beautiful woodwork and detail all throughout the salon.  The cushions are new and look great. The signature stained glass trademarks the Baba 35--this one is of a swallow. See the photos! It's beautiful.

The v-berth has an insert to make it into a double, and the head to port is large with marble and teak detail. There is excessive storage, and the living space on this boat is comfortable and incredible!

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

sailboats for sale 35 ft

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Where to Buy a Home in Moscow in 2024

The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. They also note that traditionally, the fall-winter period has always been considered a time of low demand for houses for sale in Russia; however, the opposite is now the case.

Here are the Moscow real estate categories to consider when buying a house in Russia:

  • By direction and location (Rublyovka, Novaya Riga, Barvikha);
  • By classification ( luxury , business class, economy);
  • By development format (townhouses, detached private homes).

When purchasing homes in Moscow, Russia, a good rule of thumb is to select houses within an 18.6-mile (30 km) radius from the center of Moscow. This ensures you will get a well-developed infrastructure, and that the chosen location will be replete with hospitals and schools.

We recommend considering the West, South and North directions just out of Moscow. You may notice that country houses are noticeably cheaper on the capital’s Eastern side. However, this is due to poor environmental conditions – the result of the presence of a number of industrial facilities in the entire East area.

Best Cottage Communities in Moscow

Muscovites with high incomes live in closed elite cottage communities that have their own full infrastructure. Such cottage communities are usually designed by Europe’s best architects, especially contracted for the job. These locations have everything: private English schools, restaurants, shops, pools and gyms, beauty salons and equestrian sports clubs.

The most expensive houses up for sale are located in the Barvikha Hills area (Rublevka direction). This elite location near Moscow even has its own famous brand boutiques: Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bentley, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson. The least expensive house here costs 1.5 million US dollars and has a floor area of 656 sqft (200 m²). This gated community is just 10-20 minutes by car away from Moscow itself.

We encourage you to consider some of the following elite locations as you decide where to purchase your ideal property: Etude Family Club, La-Mansh, Western Residence, Yusupovo Life Park, Odintsovo, Novaya Riga and Pirogovo. There you will find everything one requires for a comfortable life, at the price of 300 to 500 thousand US dollars for a residential home.

As you choose your future home, make sure to take into account the category of the land on which it is built. Each category has its own taxation rate. Our lawyer can explain all the details on property taxes in Russia to you at your request. Contact us to get your consultation!
