Is the 262-foot-long xplorer 80 the ultimate crossover superyacht.

Damen Yachting's Xplorer 80 is uniquely qualified to cruise in the tropics

Full disclosure. I love all of Damen Yachting ’s newly rebranded Xplorer line of crossover superyachts that combine all the capabilities of an expedition yacht with all the over-the-top luxury of a more conventional yacht. I love the way they dare to be just a bit different too.

And now that the new, 262-foot-long (80 meter) Xplorer 80 has been introduced to the Xplorer range which already includes the 196-foot-long Xplorer 60 (meter), and the massive 344-foot-long Xplorer 105 (meter), it’s great to see the Damen Yachting team continue to innovate.

Ahhhhh. The Xplore 80 combines luxury with capability

“By introducing the Xplorer 80, we have further established our ability to create a perfect crossover superyacht. She combines luxury, expedition, capability, high-spec shipbuilding and everything in- between.” Rose Damen, Managing Director Damen Yachting.

According to advance reports the concept was conceived with customization in mind while offering a number of configuration options to suit any lifestyle. Xplorer Design Manager Enrique Tintore explains, “The way the Xplorer has been designed allows for a high level of flexibility to suit any extreme environment or refined landscape. If a helicopter isn’t essential for you, we’ve got many other options for that space. Need a conference room or a seventh guest cabin? Or a separate gym and a high-spec laboratory? We can make that happen.”

The configuration options include everything from a below deck helicopter hangar, and large gym and wellness center, to a massive twin tender garage setup with a fully-equipped dive center. And for many who don’t require such serious heli-ops storage capability, the large aft area can be configured into wall-to-wall lounge and beach club too.

The flexibility in the design does not stop at configuration options. For the exterior design, Damen Yachting has once again partnered with Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture to further develop the Xplorer 80’s exterior lines. But the Dutch builder has also partnered up with a number of additional exterior and interior designers to provide a unique set of alternatives centered around the same base platform. For the exterior, alternative designs have been created by Espen Øino, Harrison Eidsgaard and Azure Yacht Design.

For the interior design concepts, Damen Yachting has partnered with London-based design studio Harrison Eidsgaard. The result is a custom designed for long-term and luxurious living. Known for their quality and personal attention to detail, the Harrison Eidsgaard team has developed a Manhattan loft-inspired space that encompasses how you like to explore and experience your passions. With refined details, smart storage and a warm ambience throughout, every step you take around this yacht has been considered. "This interior can cover every journey and any lifestyle - all you need to do is immerse yourself." Ben Harrison, co-founder of Harrison Eidsgaard. Alternative interior design concepts have also been provided by Winch Design and Reymond Langton Design.

The owners suite aboard the Xplore 80 from Damen Yachting

Coinciding with the introduction of the Xplorer 80, Damen Yachting have also introduced their updated and modernized branding for their range of luxury explorers. Damen Yachting’s Marketing Manager Sarah Flavell explains. “We wanted to make the original SeaXplorer branding more relevant for today’s and tomorrow’s luxurious yet adventurous yachting needs. While the DNA within the Xplorer 80 proudly carries all of the original SeaXplorer key attributes, we wanted to update the way the brand was presented to better reflect the forward-thinking nature of this new 80-metre Xplorer. The result is that the Xplorer 80 absolutely embodies the brand values associated with the Xplorer range bringing extensive capability, unrivalled autonomy and above all luxury space and lifestyle to the most extreme corners of the globe.”

An alternative exterior layout from Harrison Eidsgaard is also available

It's cool to see Damen Yachting focus on a world of infinite adventures where superyachts and expedition yachts combine. In fact, the new Xplorer 80 may just be the ultimate crossover superyacht that combines luxury and expedition capability in a whole new way.

Sailing Towards the Future

For centuries, people who love the sea have been fascinated by yachts, with their elegant shapes gliding on blue waters. However, the process of designing and visualising these vessels has evolved dramatically over time. In recent years, advancements in technology, particularly in 3D modelling and visualisation, have revolutionised the yacht industry, offering unprecedented levels of precision, customisation, and efficiency. As we sail further into the 21st century, the future of 3D modelling and visualisation in the yacht industry promises even greater innovation and transformation.

The Evolution of Yacht Design

Traditionally, yacht design was a laborious process, relying heavily on hand-drawn sketches, physical models, and iterative adjustments. This approach often resulted in prolonged development timelines and limited opportunities for experimentation. However, the advent of computer-aided design (CAD) in the latter half of the 20th century heralded a new era for yacht design. CAD software enabled designers to create digital representations of their concepts, streamlining the design process and facilitating more precise calculations.

Enter 3D Modelling

In recent years, 3D modelling has emerged as the gold standard for yacht design. Unlike traditional 2D CAD drawings, 3D models provide designers with a comprehensive and immersive representation of their creations. By leveraging powerful software suites such as Rhino 3D, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Orca3D, Napa, and SSI Shipconstructor, designers can sculpt, refine, and visualise every aspect of a yacht's hull, superstructure, and interior spaces with unparalleled fidelity.

Each of these software solutions offers unique capabilities tailored to the specific demands of naval and ship design. Orca3D, for example, is renowned for its intuitive interface and comprehensive suite of tools designed specifically for marine design, including hydrostatics, stability, and hull fairing. Napa, on the other hand, is widely recognised for its advanced hydrodynamic analysis capabilities, enabling designers to optimise vessel performance and efficiency. Similarly, SSI Shipconstructor excels in facilitating the entire shipbuilding process, from initial design and engineering to production and assembly planning. Together, these software solutions empower designers to bring their visions to life with precision and efficiency, laying the foundation for the next generation of maritime innovation.

The Benefits of 3D Visualisation

One of the most significant advantages of 3D modelling and visualisation in the yacht industry is the ability to create photorealistic renderings and virtual tours. These digital representations allow clients to explore every facet of a yacht's design before construction begins, providing invaluable insights into layout, aesthetics, and functionality. Moreover, 3D visualisation enables designers to experiment with different materials, colours, and finishes, empowering clients to make informed decisions and customise their vessels to their exact specifications.

In addition to enhancing visualisation capabilities, 3D modelling has revolutionised the design process itself. By digitally prototyping yacht components and systems, designers can identify potential issues early in the development cycle, minimising costly errors and delays down the line. Furthermore, 3D modeling enables seamless collaboration between designers, engineers, and naval architects, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and accelerating the pace of yacht design evolution.

A New Era of Yacht Presentations with Studio 3DX

Studio 3DX marks a paradigm shift in how yachts are presented and visualised. Our platform empowers 3D designers to seamlessly bring their creations from design software straight to the web, without limitations on file size. This means that even the most intricate yacht models, complete with full interiors, can be showcased flawlessly online. With Studio 3DX's innovative editor, designers can enhance the surroundings of the yacht further by adding the right HDRI background, adjusting lighting, fog, and sun intensity to create the perfect mood for clients to experience owning and sailing their dream yacht in real life.

Studio 3DX offers a comprehensive toolkit to enhance the realism of luxury yacht models. With features like Background Environment, Fog, Directional Lighting, Ambient Light Intensity, Sun controls, Ambient Occlusion, Bloom Intensity, and Culling, designers can create immersive and visually stunning presentations that captivate clients and increase the chances of selling their products.

Background Environment: Studio 3DX's Background Environment tool offers a myriad of preset environments, each meticulously crafted to provide a contextual backdrop for yacht scenes. By adjusting settings such as sunlight intensity and direction, designers can accentuate the material textures of the yacht's surfaces. For instance, selecting a sunlit setting can highlight the sheen and luster of metallic textures like chrome or steel, while a clear sky background enhances the transparency and light refraction of glass surfaces such as windows or mirrors. Additionally, Background Environments with varying levels of natural light can influence the perception of wood surfaces, from polished oak to weathered pine, enhancing the authenticity of the material.

Fog: Fog in Studio 3DX adds depth and atmosphere to yacht scenes, allowing designers to evoke different moods and enhance realism. By adjusting fog density and colour, designers can soften harsh shadows and create a diffused lighting effect, ideal for highlighting metallic textures or adding warmth to wood surfaces. Moreover, subtle tint adjustments to the fog can simulate the colour shifts caused by light refraction on glass surfaces, enhancing their transparency and realism.

Directional Lighting: The Directional Lighting controls in Studio 3DX empower designers to precisely adjust lighting effects, further enhancing the realism of luxury yacht models. By manipulating parameters such as sun elevation, azimuth, and ambient light intensity, designers can cast dynamic shadows that emphasise texture and dimensionality. For example, adjusting the azimuth can create different lighting effects, emphasising the ruggedness of stone textures or the smoothness of glass surfaces. Additionally, directional lighting can highlight specular highlights and reflections on metallic textures, adding depth and realism to surfaces like polished chrome or brushed aluminium.

Ambient Light Intensity: Ambient light in Studio 3DX fills in shadows and adds overall illumination to yacht scenes, simulating indirect light bouncing off surfaces. By adjusting ambient light intensity, designers can control the brightness of the scene uniformly, revealing intricate details and textures. Higher intensity settings create a well-lit environment, ideal for showcasing luxurious interiors, while lower intensity settings create more pronounced shadows and contrast, adding depth and drama to the scene.

azure yacht design & naval

Sun Intensity, Azimuth, Elevation, and Colour: The Sun controls in Studio 3DX allow for precise adjustments to the directional sunlight in yacht scenes. Higher sun intensity settings create stronger shadows and highlights. By manipulating parameters such as azimuth and elevation, designers can control the angle and direction of sunlight, creating different lighting effects to suit the scene's mood and ambiance. Moreover, adjusting sun colour adds an additional layer of customisation, influencing the overall colour palette of the scene and evoking different emotional responses from clients.

Ambient Occlusion, and Culling: Studio 3DX's Ambient Occlusion enhances scene realism by simulating soft shadows where surfaces meet or are close together. Increasing ambient occlusion quality adds depth and definition to objects, improving overall visual fidelity. Finally, Culling optimises rendering performance by selectively rendering only visible objects, improving efficiency and scene navigation responsiveness.

A Vision for the Future

As we chart a course into the future, Studio 3DX stands as a beacon of innovation in the yacht industry. Whether showcasing newly designed vessels or transforming used yachts into immersive 3D replicas, the platform empowers designers to captivate clients and unlock new opportunities for collaboration. With Studio 3DX, the journey from concept to reality has never been more exhilarating or rewarding.

The future of yacht design and presentation is here, and it's defined by Studio 3DX. Join us as we embark on a voyage of creativity, collaboration, and discovery, shaping the next generation of maritime masterpieces one pixel at a time.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.

Fabrice Amedeo's OC design IMOCA 60 launched

Posted on 30th march 2024.

Fabrice Amedeo's IMOCA 60 launched on Friday will be called "Nexans-Wewise

Fabrice Amedeo's Owen Clarke (OC) IMOCA Open 60 was launched on Friday morning in Lorient with its new keel, designed and built over the winter. Also, a new partner has joined the project: Wewise, a company dedicated to renewable energies and photovoltaic. This is invaluable support for the skipper, who intends to complete the next Vendée Globe without using renewable energy only, no fossil fuels, and who also has a strong programme of oceanographic measurements and collaboration with the scientific community.

Fabrice Amedeo’s Owen Clarke Design renewable energy IMOCA 60 Nexans WeWise entered in the 2024 Vendee Globe being launched at La Base, Lorient.

This boat is equipped with 15m2 of solar panels that will permanently recharge the batteries during its circumnavigation. The system was tested this autumn during the Transat Jacques Vabre between Le Havre and La Martinique, then during the return transatlantic race. The aim is to sail around the world powered using renewable energy only, by the wind, recharging the batteries without using fossil fuels - a challenge that highlights the importance of the energy transition and sobriety. The entire system - batteries, solar panels and onboard systems - was checked and made reliable during the winter refit. The double crossing of the Atlantic between France and New York in the spring (the Transat CIC on the outward leg and the New York - Vendée on the return leg) will provide further proof of the boat's ability to rely solely on solar energy, albeit with hydro-generators as a secondary source of power. More information regarding Owen Clarke's participation in the IMOCA class since it was founded can be found here.
