Yachting is the use of a boat designed for recreation or leisure to cruise or race.

Yachts typically have a “season” in which they are most active. Depending on their home harbour, yachts will be most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. Spring and Fall seasons are generally times in which the boat is resting or preparing for the next active season. 

There are many different types of yachts from those that sail exclusively with motors, to those with two hulls called catamarans. Here is a basic yachting guide for the different types of yachts and their definitions: 

Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails

Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors

Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors

Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining

The cost of renting a yacht depends on the size and type of ship, and the kinds of amenities desired in a ship. 

According to worldwideboat.com, “the average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.”

A 100-foot yacht will typically comfortably house 12 guests in complete luxury, meaning each person can expect to contribute around $5000 for their week long vacation. While this is quite the luxury vacation, it is priced similarly to a high end all inclusive resort, and less expensive even than some of the high end cruise lines where your vacation is shared with hundreds of people!

Yachts can have crews anywhere from a single captain to nearly 100 people. Depending on the size and amenities of the ship, the crew will include many different positions. Yacht crews are divided into four different departments, or categories: deck, interior, engineering, and galley. 

On deck there are different levels of crew, the names of which are classically in the common lexicon including members like the captain, the first mate, and deckhands. 

The people on deck are responsible for the navigation and bridge operation, safety, maintenance of the exterior, communication, and tender and recreation activities. 

The interior department includes stewards and amenity specific positions like bartenders, salon services, masseuses, laundry, and finances. 

Those assigned to the interior are responsible for the service on board, cleaning and maintenance of the cabins and living spaces, event planning and entertainment, and the indoor amenities offered onboard. 

Engineering

The engineering department is responsible for all things related to the engine, electrical system, sanitation and environment control, planned maintenance, and troubleshooting issues on board. 

Engineering generally consists of a smaller department of a chief engineer and either several specialists or simply a 2nd under them. 

The galley department is responsible for all things food and beverage related. This department is always run by the head chef who will place provisional orders and with the help of a sous chef or other cooks will design and prepare a menu specific to the preference sheet of the guests. The galley is also responsible for provisions for the crew most often. 

Getting a job on a yacht starts with appropriate training. Depending on the department or type of work you want to do, the training can vary from a few weeks all the way up to getting licensed as a captain. 

Most deck crew have what is called a 6-pack captains license which allows them to captain the tender, or the smaller boat that takes people to and from the yacht when it is anchored. 

Generally, the interior crew and galley crew are required to have food handlers certifications as they are serving food and alcohol regularly to guests. 

After training, typically you would apply for positions in the months before a season and then maintain a position on a specific vessel for the entire season. Some crew management companies specialize in placement on different types of yachts, but typically the first year or two is spent on smaller vessels. 

Getting into the yachting industry can be difficult as there is always competition due to the shorter seasons of work. Yachting requires workers to be away from home for many weeks at a time as well as includes strenuous physical labor. This means most yacht workers are young, single, and highly independent.

3. Port – Port is always the left-hand side of the boat when you are facing the bow. Because “right” and “left” can become confusing sailing terms when used out in the open waters, port is used to define the left-hand side of the boat as it relates to the bow, or front. 

4. Starboard – Starboard is always the right-hand side of the boat when you are facing the bow. Because “right” and “left” can become confusing sailing terms when used out in the open waters, starboard is used to define the right-hand side of the boat as it relates to the bow, or front. 

5. Tender- a vessel used for servicing and providing support and entertainment to a private or charter yacht. They include utilitarian craft, powered by oar or outboard motor, and high-speed luxury craft, supporting superyachts, powered by inboard engines, some using water-jets.

6. Charter- the practice of renting, or chartering, a sailboat or motor yacht and travelling to various coastal or island destinations. This is usually a vacation activity, but it also can be a business event

What is Sailing?

Formerly the world's major form of long-distance trade and transport , sailing - the art of moving a boat or similar vessel by harnessing the waves and the wind - is now largely a sporting pursuit.

By whom, where and when was Sailing invented?

Sailing has for thousands of years been a form of transport used in activities from exploration to fishing and even warfare.

International yacht racing began in 1851, when a syndicate of members of the New York Yacht Club built a 101-foot schooner named "America". The yacht was sailed to England, where it won a trophy called the Hundred Guineas Cup in a race around the Isle of Wight. The trophy was renamed "The America's Cup" and it remains yachting's most coveted prize as well as the world's oldest international sporting competition.

Racing has spread to other crafts which have continually evolved to reflect advances in boat design and technology. Recent advances have created a trend towards smaller and lighter craft, placing ever greater demands on both the athletic and technical capacities of the sailors.

What are the rules of Sailing?

The sport is organised under a single set of rules for racing published by World Sailing. Olympic racing is now conducted with boats categorised into one-design classes based on similar weights and measurements.

While the America's Cup follows a match race format - one boat against another - most events are fleet races where numerous crafts compete for finishing position.

In fleet races, and match races, crews must do their best to avoid contact and yield to a boat with the right of way.

Sailing and the Olympics

Sailing was first contested as an Olympic sport at the 1900 Paris Games after poor weather forced the cancellation of scheduled races at the inaugural Athens 1896 Games. It has appeared at every Games since with the exception of 1904.

Women competed alongside men in 1900 with the first women's only event introduced at Seoul 1988.

There have been numerous changes to the crafts used over the years with kiteboarding making its debut at Paris 2024.

Great Britain has long been the powerhouse nation in sailing with the United States second in the all-time medal table.

Best sailors to watch

With a number of top sailors from Tokyo 2020 retiring from the sport or switching their attentions to Sail GP and/or the America's Cup, the Nacra 17 mixed boat sees perhaps the most continuity with Italy's Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti defending their title.

The pair duelled with training partners John Gimson and Anna Burnet in Tokyo, and look set to do so again with the crews winning gold at four of the last five World Championships (two apiece).

Sailing Competition Rules at Paris 2024

At Paris 2024, there will two mixed boats (470 and Nacra 17) plus four crafts for each gender making 10 events.

The windsurfer RS:X has been replaced by a windfoiling craft, the IQFoil, which achieves superior performance in light winds. The men's Finn has been dropped from Tokyo 2020.

There are either 10 or 12 races in a competition followed in which crews receive points depending on their finishing position, ie. one for first, two for second, etc.. The top 10 boats - those with the lowest total scores and discarding their worst race finish - go through to the medal race which attracts double points.

The medals go to the boats with the lowest totals after the medal race which cannot be discarded. Crews with a sizable advantage may race tactically to prevent their nearest rivals achieving a high finishing position.

Prominent figures like Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Nina Dobrev, Hailey Bieber, and Emily Ratajkowski have all been linked anecdotally to Nonsense Pudding .

Thanks to influencers like Deux Moi , normies are finally getting a peek into the life of the rich and famous. And while pictures aboard yachts surrounded by luxury may look glamorous to all of us, it isn't necessarily all that it’s cracked up to be. Stories have been coming out for decades about people, often women, who subject themselves to “yachting.”

We may associate yachting with rich guys sailing in races, but it actually has a much darker meaning in Hollywood . It’s often considered Hollywood’s oldest “open secret,” but what actually is “yachting”? Keep reading for all of the details.

In Hollywood, "yachting" is the practice of getting paid large sums of money to spend time with wealthy people.

At its most innocent, “yachting” is a PR opportunity for an up-and-coming actor or model. However, it’s often much more sinister. Basically, typically women on their way up in the industry may get paid a large sum of money — five, six, or even seven figures — to spend time with wealthy men. The benefit for the women is the money, the photo ops of luxury, and a potential opportunity to meet someone who could give them a leg up in the industry.

However, they often aren’t told what strings are attached before agreeing to “yacht” with someone. Many of these excursions often lead to sex and other forms of assault. Although the women tend to be up and coming celebs and influencers, they are essentially selling their body for the entirety of their time on the yacht. It gives “the implication” a whole new meaning.

“Yachting” is a common and known practice in Hollywood, but it could also be considered prostitution.

In 2007, businessman Elie Nahas was convicted of running a prostitution ring at the Cannes Film Festival. He claimed that he was only responsible for getting women to Cannes and had nothing to do with what happened after, but even if he did, there are hundreds of other men doing the same thing.

Many of us see pictures of celebrities on yachts and luxury vacations and think, "Wow, imagine living that life!" But in reality, they're being paid to spend time with someone they may not like just because it could further their career. But in doing so, many give up their bodies.

In fact, one Redditor wrote : “You are essentially being bought for a certain period of time. Hence why people get drugged, raped, fondled, sleep with men older than their fathers, pissed and shat on. Once everything is said and done, the trauma and memories of doing those things stay with you forever. Your dignity is being leveraged for fame and money. Let’s not forget a lot of these encounters are filmed and can easily be used to blackmail these young stars.”

It’s an example of powerful men taking advantage of young women with dreams of succeeding in an already corrupt industry. But the practice is so common that stories have circulated about Selena Gomez , Ariana Grande, Kylie and Kendall Jenner , Nina Dobrev, Hailey Bieber, and many other big stars.

Inboard – A motor located inside the boat

Jibsheet – The line or rope used to control the jib sail

Keelboat – A type of sailboat with a fixed keel for stability and maneuverability

Luff – The forward edge of a sail

Masthead – The top of the mast where the highest sails are attached

Navigation lights – Lights used to signal other boats of the position and direction of a boat at night

Outhaul – The line or rope used to control the tension of the bottom of the sail

Planing – The state of a boat when it is moving quickly across the water and partially out of the water

Ratchet block – A device used to reduce the effort required to pull a line under tension

Reefing – The process of reducing the size of the sails in high wind conditions

Rigging – The system of ropes and wires used to support and control the sails and mast

Rudderpost – The vertical post or shaft that the rudder is attached to

Scow – A type of sailboat with a flat bottom and squared-off ends

Shackle – A metal fitting used to connect two pieces of rope or chain

Spinnaker – A large, lightweight sail used to catch the wind when sailing down

History Of Sailing

Who invented sailing, where did sailing originate, when did sailing become an official sport, how did sailing become popular, sailing olympic history, key facts and timeline.

The Dutch are credited in developing modern sailing with the invention of the yacht.  They originally used small, fast boats to chase pirates and criminals. To celebrate their returning ships, rich merchants would sail out on their “jaghts.” It then turned into a common practice to take your friends out on your jaght for leisure.

In these days, sailing for fun was largely a pursuit of the wealthy. For example, when King Charles II of England was exiled for 10 years in Holland, after returning to his throne in 1660, there was a great celebration, and he was gifted a 60-foot yacht by the city of Amsterdam. He later became so fond of the pastime of sailing that he eventually built 20 yachts during his lifetime.

The origins of sailing are still highly debated today, but it is believed that the earliest evidence of sailing can be found around the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea. Scientists have found, through archeological evidence, that Kuwait has the earliest remains of sea-going boats (5,000-6,000 BCE). These boats were used in a trading network between southern Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf. However, this is not the oldest known ocean trading network, which was an obsidian trade route of the Aegean Sea from around 7,000 BCE. 

The Mediterranean and Aegean Seas are where the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians set sail. Their ships were mainly used for travel, fishing , trade, and even war. These ancient civilizations most likely used a square rigger, which is a ship with a square sail. This allowed the wind to push on the sail from the back so it could propel the ship forward.

Sailing became an official sport when a 40-mile race between King Charles II of England and the Duke of York took place on the River Thames in 1661.  Charles used his new yacht, Katherine, while Duke used his yacht, Anne. Charles ended up winning, and this was the first organized regatta that was recorded in human history. 

At first, the sport of sailing was mainly for kings, but as it grew it reached the extremely wealthy in the 1800s and yacht clubs began forming. In 1720, the Cork Water Club of Ireland became the first yacht club in the world, followed by the Lough Ree Yacht Club of Ireland in 1770 and the Starcross Yacht Club of England in 1772.

The sport eventually made its way to America when the New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844.  John Cox Stevens, the founder, and eight of his friends planned on creating a yacht and taking her to England to compete in races, and they built a Pilot-style schooner, which was the fastest boat at the time. This was the start of international racing. With this 101-foot boat, they sailed to England in 1851 and won the Hundred Guineas Cup.

Sailing started to become popular after the first yacht club formed in 1720.  However, its popularity really boosted when it was introduced to the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris. After this, technology started to develop, and people started to make smaller and lighter crafts.

The first Olympic sailing competition took place at the 1900 Games in Paris.  Great Britain won this first competition, setting the precedent early on that the UK national team would be the dominant powerhouse of Olympic sailing. A sailing event was scheduled to occur at the inaugural 1896 Games in Athens, but this was canceled due to poor weather conditions. The 1904 competition was canceled for the same reason, but sailing has occurred at each edition of the Summer Games since.

The first women’s only Olympic sailing event took place at the 1988 Games in Seoul.  Women were allowed to compete alongside men on national sailing teams since the sport debuted in 1900, but the inclusion of a women’s only event was deemed necessary and approved in 1984.

When did people start sailing?

Sailing is an ancient activity, and can be traced back as far as 7,000 BCE.  In the ancient world, sailing was primarily used to facilitate trade and warfare, and these practices allegedly began in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, as well as the Persian Gulf. Modern sport sailing began in the Netherlands during the 1400s, and it slowly grew popular until yacht clubs were invented in England and the United States, after which sailing was added to the Olympic Games in 1900.

The USA won the America’s Cup from 1851 to 1983.  After that, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland have been bringing home the crown.

There are many boat types used for sailing, from large yachts to dinghy racing.

There are different types of races; fleet racing, team racing, and match racing. Fleet racing include at least four boats. Some of these events include hundreds of participants. Match racing includes two boats competing against each other and the fastest one wins. Team racing involves two teams which have three boats each. It’s a 3-on-3 game and it’s very similar to match racing.

Scoring systems depend on the event (Olympics or America’s Cup). The widely celebrated format for races include short course, coastal or inshore, offshore, and oceanic.

Nowadays, competitions are still held worldwide to showcase the best sailors in the world. Major events that involving sailing are the Olympics, Mug Race, and Cowes Week.

As the years go by, sailing has become very interesting. With the development of technology, boats have become more advanced. But definitely, simpler boats with backward technology have never left the scene.

The word “yachting” as well as the concept itself came into our vocabulary quite recently. Just 30 years ago in the former Soviet Union, no one had even heard of yachting and had no idea what it was. There was only the concept of “sailing”. Surprisingly, if you refer to Wikipedia, they’re still yachting, sailing and sailing are reduced to one denominator – sailing competitions. For the concept of “yachting,” this, it should be noted, is too narrow and limited an explanation. This short word encompasses a wide range of concepts in the world of maritime and sailing culture with an equal variety of individual activities and an entire industry in production, entertainment, sport and tourism. Let’s try to understand why yachting is not just about sailing.

Yachting, sailing and sailing

The word “yachting” in Russian is a borrowed word, from the English “yachting” and began to be used in Russian quite recently. Even in English, the word “yachting” is relatively new. It came into use in the 17th century thanks to King Charles II of England, who was the first to use yachts for recreation and entertainment. Before that, all sailing boats and seagoing vessels around the world had been used for trading, transport and fishing. Although there is still heated debate about the birthplace of yachting, whether in the Netherlands or England, many believe that, thanks to Charles II, it is England. And yachting, as a sailing sport, became particularly popular in England in the 19th century. Queen Victoria and her family owned a fleet of steam and sailing yachts at the royal residence on the Isle of Wight. And the home of yachting is still considered to be the town of Cowes, located on the island, where every summer the famous sailing festival, known to all fans of such events as “Cowes Week”, takes place. Today, yachting in England is not just a sport or a hobby, it is a way of life.

It should be noted that in English there is also such a word as “sailing”, which is also quite often translated in Russian as “sailing”. In fact, this word means “sailing”. Not competition, but sailing for pleasure. And anything that has to do with sailing boats refers to sailing. In recent years, this word, as well as the word yachting, began to be used in Russian. Probably because the word is shorter, simpler, more understandable and laconic than “sailing”. As for many other yachting terms, they began to use short English words, despite the fact that in Russian there is a corresponding translation. For example – nautical arbor knot has long been called bowline, from the English “bow line”. But the word combination “sailing regata” means “sailing competition”, when the sailing boat is not just sailing for fun, but competing with rivals. Sailing regattas are divided into professional and amateur. Professional sailing regattas are the same sailing where professional yachtsmen who start sailing in their childhood compete.

Until the middle of the 20th century relaxation on a yacht was really the privilege of the elite, an attribute of the “sweet life”, so inaccessible and alluring. Only very rich people could afford such pastime, and moreover to become a yacht owner. Everything changed with the development of new technologies and creation of fiberglass and polyester materials, which were applied in yacht production. This started a real boom in the development of the yachting industry. One after another, a number of new sail and motor yacht building yards started to open and the oldest wooden yacht building companies started to start producing hulls from modern materials and produce low-cost sailing and motor yachts that made yachting more affordable. The first companies opened up to offer yachts for rent. Now, it was not necessary to become an owner of a yacht in order to spend time on the yacht. Not only the rich and the select few could afford to rent a yacht. One of the first major companies to begin offering yachts for rent, Sunsail partnered with sailboat builder Jeanneau Yachts, ordering yachts under the Sunsail brand and opening yacht bases around the world. Yacht tourism picks up speed and the development of yacht infrastructure – yacht clubs are opened, marinas are built, private yacht service companies are founded, wharfs and piers in coves are equipped. At the same time, navigation and satellite systems started to be developed and modernized. Becoming a yacht captain is no longer a distant dream. Yachting educational centers offering high quality education in a short period of time are opening one after another.

Today, “yachting” is not just a word, not just a boat trip or sailing competition. Yachting is a multi-faceted world of yachting, a convergence of manufacturing, engineering and innovation, sport, tourism and education, all of which have been created and continue to develop by long-time romantics, lovers of the sea, adventurers in love with the sea, for whom the yacht is not just a transport, but a true embodiment of boundless freedom, opening the way to unknown horizons.

The complete guide to windsports and the wind speed required to practice them

There are many different kinds of sport and outdoor activities that require wind. The question is: What is the wind speed? The wind gusts and wind direction are also very important.

For example, sailing and windsurfing are equally impossible in stormy and calm weather. Even runners and slackliners are affected by wind, yes. But not that much as those who use sails, flies, and bikes.

Let's learn what are the main types of windsports you can try and what kind of wind is a friend or an enemy for you as sportsmen.

What are windsports?

In general, windsport is any sport based on wind force. As a rule, wind outdoor activities use aerodynamic structures that allow you to catch and control the wind: sails, kites, parachutes, wings.

Almost all wind outdoor activities are extreme sports as they depend on uncontrollable weather conditions.

I guess that includes also drones because it's easy to lose them because of the weather. The higher the wind speed, the faster the drone runs out of battery and the more difficult it’s to control it. In addition, standard drones can fly at a speed of no more than 10 m/s. Isn't that an extreme sport?!

What particular types of windsports I can try?

There are many varieties of wind sports. They use different equipment for them — kites, sails, wings, balloons... It can be water sport, ground sport (including snow and ice), and air sport.

Many of them are very similar — for example, snowkiting is a winter kind of kitesurfing. For this reason, let's think of water and land as just surfaces, regardless of their nature, and divide land and water sports by the type of equipment:

Water and land windsports where you use kites

Kitesurfing (also called "kiteboarding").  It’s a relatively new, but the most fast-growing extreme sport worldwide. With sufficient wind of at least 6 m/s, the rider moves on the board through the water under the force of traction. A beginner rider doesn’t need to have their own equipment — there’re a lot of spots in the world where you can use the rental and try kitesurfing. But remember that doing this without an instructor is very risky to health.

Snowkiting.  This is one of the popular winter extreme sports now. The rider is skiing or snowboarding on a flat snow or ice surface due to the traction force in the kite. In fact, this is the same kitesurfing, only in winter. Frozen lakes, large plains, and intermountain plateaus are suitable for skiing. Snowkiting is developed both on the coast of the Barents Sea and in ski resorts (for example, St. Moritz or Levi).

Kite boating.  This is boating due to kite traction. Its principle was used even at the end of the 19th century. Nowadays amateur athletes attach kites even to motorboats, but in general, this sport is less popular.

Kite skating, kite landboarding, kite mountainboarding, and even kite buggy.  These are types of kiting, too. Riders use the traction forces of the kite to ride on asphalt, mountains, and rough terrain on boards or off-road buggies. These are very extreme activities for riders who already ride at a high level without a kite and want to try something new in their own sport.

Kite jumping.  On the contrary, this is a sport for professionals only. These are acrobatic jumps from the earth's surface due to the force of traction. This is probably the most dangerous type of kiting because the rider has poor control over the landing and risks getting severe injuries upon landing.

We are talking primarily about the land here:  Jumping off the water is part of kitesurfing.

Water and land windsports where you use sails

Windsurfing .  Windsurfing is an older sport than kiteboarding. It is even included in the Summer Olympics program in the Sailing category . The rider moves through the water on a light board due to the traction force generated in the sail. Almost any open water is suitable for windsurfing. Even a three-year-old child can be put on a windsurf.

Sailing (also called "boating", "yachting").  This is a sport and leisure in which a boat or yacht is driven by sails. It originated in the 16th century in Europe and has been known all over the world since then. The period from the 16th to the 19th century was later called " The Age of Sail ". Speed races in sailing, also called regattas, are also included in the Olympic program. Yachting or "sailing tourism" is a calm and relatively inexpensive activity.

Land sailing and sail biking.  It is movement on land in a wheeled vehicle, propelled by sails and wind. Also called 'sand yachting', 'land yachting' or 'dirtboating'. Historically, land-based sailing structures have been used as a means of transportation or recreation. Since the middle of the 20th century, land sailing has evolved into a racing sport for fans. Also these "boats on wheels" are used for riding on ice, and this is called iceboating.

Sail bikingis a rare and niche type of cycling, often incomprehensible to most cyclists. A small sail is attached to the rear of the road bike, which, due to the traction force, accelerates the bike without the rider’s effort.

Air windsports

Gliding.  It’s a sport and leisure activity in which the pilot flies an aircraft without an engine using currents of rising air. There’re a lot of fans of this sport all over the world, but now, especially for tourist gliding, motor gliders are more in demand. Thanks to the presence of the engine, they enable pilots to return to the airfield and control the glide in bad weather. Compared to other air windsports, gliding is not very traumatic.

Hang gliding.  The pilot operates a lightweight aluminum structure with wheels and a wing. The start is carried out from the feet or by a winch. To fly a hang glider, a pilot needs endurance and good physical shape. The record holders have covered more than 700 km on a hang glider in one flight.

Microlighting.  These are flights on very light or ultralight aircraft — as a rule, weighing no more than 500 kg. In general, there are two types of microlight aircraft — flexwing and three axis. The first looks more like a hang glider, and the second, due to the rigid wings, looks like an airplane. Niche type of activity, widespread only among amateurs or professionals.

Parachuting (also called "skydiving"). It’s jumping from an airplane or helicopter using a domed parachute. It’s probably the most famous of all air sports, widely distributed and available to almost everyone. It doesn't require much training, and beginners can jump in tandem with an instructor. The wind speed at the surface should be no more than 5 m/s — otherwise, there’s a risk of losing control.

Base jumping.  It's almost like parachuting, only jumping off stationary objects — bridges and tall buildings. Due to its low altitude and proximity to infrastructure facilities, it's considered one of the most extreme and dangerous air sports.

Paragliding .  Another type of parachuting, only less traumatic and making horizontal rather than vertical flights. This principle is similar to hang gliding. The pilot sits or lies in a cocoon-bag, suspended below a wing. It's very easy to operate, which is why paragliding is common as entertainment in resorts. Most often, pilots take off on the slopes of hills or mountains, strictly against the wind.

In what other sports does the wind affect athletes?

In fact, wind affects almost all types of outdoor activities. Wind can increase sensations of temperature.

For example, in hot windy weather, it’s easier for athletes to exercise, but in frost with wind, athletes are much colder than without. And very strong winds can pose a safety risk: knock down, cut down trees, damage equipment, or disoriented.

But let's identify other sports and outdoor activities that do not need the wind, as in yachting or kitesurfing, but which can be significantly affected by the wind.

Fishing .  Strong winds create waves and the biting of many fish, as a rule, stops. However, a weak and moderate wind is often better than even complete calm — air currents mix the water, enrich it with oxygen and create a wave. It hits a clay or muddy shore and washes away various larvae, worms, insects from it, attracting fish to this place. The crosswind makes it almost impossible to control the fishing gear. And if you are fishing from a boat, then a strong wind can turn it over. However, in hot weather, a strong wind refreshes the water well, so the bite improves.

Surfing .  The wind creates waves for surfing, the size of the waves depends on the wind speed. As waves travel farther from the source of the wind, they begin to cluster in swell lines, creating sets. Waves that are no longer affected by the wind are called “groundswells”. You need this kind of waves for surfing.

Cycling .  Strong winds and gusts can interfere with road cycling. When riding a road bike in an open area, strong winds can push him to the side or prevent him from picking up speed.

Even in free-ride mountain biking, when a rider does a jump trick, the wind may cause him to miss the landing point or move to the side. For example, Red Bull Rampage is often postponed due to strong winds.

In cross-country cycling there’re similar problems, but also strong wind poses the risk of tree branches falling on the riders' heads or route.

Highline (an extreme type of slackline).  For walking on a line stretched in the mountains or over large ravines, it’s very important that there’s no wind. The athlete is already balancing on a not very stable line with his own weight, and the wind — and especially gusts, local winds, and storms — can knock him off balance, causing the athlete to fall. Therefore, it’s imperative for the highline to use insurance.

High diving (also called "cliff diving").  For diving from great heights (natural or artificial), the wind speed is of great importance. The higher the speed, the more difficult it’s for the athlete and the more dangerous.

For example, in September 2020, at the Crimea High Diving World International Cup , due to strong wind, sportsmen were forced to change their set of tricks literally on the day of the competition.

Running some marathons.  When running in the city, the wind doesn’t greatly affect the athletes. But if the competition takes place in extreme conditions, anything can happen.

For example, in 1994, at the famous super marathon in the Sahara " Marathon des Sables ", one athlete almost died due to the wind. The athlete ran alone, and when a strong sandstorm arose, he got lost. He was alone for 10 days among the sands and survived only thanks to his very good physical and psychological preparation.

Drones .  Drone piloting is gaining popularity all over the world. Many countries regulate the use of drones because, in the wrong hands, they pose a threat to people and infrastructure. At high wind speeds, it’s very difficult to control the drone — it loses stability, can crash or fall.

In addition, some drones are capable of flying very high and obstructing the movement of aircraft. As a rule, there’re two types of drone piloting: for competitive purposes — speed races and overcoming difficult routes, and for photography and video filming.

Air ballooning.  This is a safe and romantic type of aerial activity. The balloon has no engine and flies wherever the wind blows. It’s driven not by the wind and air currents, but by the combustion of the gas with which the dome is filled. Knowing the wind speed and direction and the goal of the flight, the pilot plans the trajectory.

But since the meteorological situation is constantly changing, it’s impossible to accurately plan a flight or landing site. That's why the balloon is launched into the air only at a low wind speed — up to 5-6 m/s — with more wind, it can be blown away and it becomes unsafe.

What wind is needed to practice windsports?

Wind speed is a prime indicator for wind sports. The comfort and safety of riding and flying depend on it. For some sports, complete calm is ideal (for example, drones), while for others, on the contrary, it’s good when the wind is quite strong, for example, kitesurfing.

Let's consider at what values of wind speed it’s possible to engage in this or that kind of wind sports:

< 0.5—1.5 m/s

Windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, paragliding, and other wind-dependent sports are equally impossible.

Good for drones and cycling as the movement is not affected by wind.

1.6—3.3 m/s

Minimum wind force for windsurfing, good for beginners. Good wind speed for paragliding.

3.4—5.5 m/s

Maximum for drones, higher wind speed makes it dangerous to fly. Maximum wind speed for beginners in parachutes.

5.5—7.9 m/s

Good for kitesurfing with the big kite (15—17 sq. m). Good speed for windsurfing.

For gliders and parachutists wind conditions are also needed at this level, but if the wind force is higher than 6 m/s, the paragliding flight may be canceled.

And if you want to fly with a drone, the same wind speed of 6 m/s will be too much, your drone will feel very unstable in the air.

8—10.7 m/s

Good for kitesurfing with the medium size kite (13—15 sq. m). In general, while kitesurfing, you’ll feel comfortable with a wind speed of 6—12 m/s.

Maximum wind speed allowed for professional licensed parachutists.

This wind speed makes it harder to cycle.

10.8—13.8 m/s

Good for kitesurfing with the small kite (10 sq. m).

Cycling is quite difficult. In general, the wind is the number one enemy for cyclists as cycling in strong winds is not only difficult, but potentially dangerous, because you can easily fall, and any fall on a bicycle unlike other sports like surfing and skiing, is not very pleasant at all.

13.9—17.1 m/s

Better to delay any kind of wind sports for your safety.

SPORT VERSUS FLYBRIDGE YACHTS

Another topic that is the subject of debate in the nautical world is the difference between the various two styles of boats: sport yachts and flybridge. FILIPPETTI SPORT YACHT VS FILIPPETTI FLYBRIDGE

A sport yacht , or also defined as open, is a boat whose main characteristics are:

• High performance;
• Planing hull;
• Single deck over the hull;
• Sporty and captivating look.

Sports yachts are designed to reach high speeds. Thanks to the different motorization and propulsion configurations, they guarantee high performance in terms of maximum speed and navigation.

A flybridge boat is characterized by having an area in the “roof” of the boat – called fly – where there are a driving position and a sunbathing area. This area is usually covered by a hardtop.

Even these boats are usually equipped with a planing hull.

In addition, state-of-the-art and latest generation navigation instruments are installed in both sport boats and flybridge.

However, unlike sports yachts, flybridge yachts are by definition more comfortable – even if they are still very performing.

What is sailing everything you need to know, thinking of learning to sail read on to find out about where to take lessons in the uk, holidays and the olympics.

Sailing has been around for travel and fishing, but it’s only become a sport since the early 17th century. The Dutch are said to be the first nation who raced yachts for fun. They gave a ship to Charles II and the sport quickly became popular in England before being taken up in America .

Up until the second half of the 20th century, yachting was a luxury sport for the rich. However, during the 1950s and 60s, new materials became available – such as plywood – which made boat construction easier and cheaper than ever before, making the sport more accessible to everyone.

Today, it is a pastime enjoyed by millions of people worldwide – both competitively and non-competitively on lakes and rivers to the wide open ocean.

Sailing In The Olympics | An Essential Guide To The Rio 2016 Events, The Rules And Schedule

Sailing specifically refers to the sport of using wind to power sails and propel the boat forward (rather than engines). Unlike windsurfing and surfing , the sport takes place in an enclosed boat rather than on a board.

Today it is mostly a recreational activity. There are two types of sailing – racing and cruising. Racing is the branch of yachting you will recognise from the Olympics , however cruising is probably what most people would enjoy on their holidays or on the weekends.

You can learn to sail on a yacht (usually around 9m long and can fit multiple people onboard) or a dinghy (around 2m to 4m long and fit one or two people inside).

Learning to sail takes a couple of days of tuition – but generally it’s a sport you will be able to pick up quickly in the right conditions. Gentle winds make for perfect weather for beginners.

The great thing about sailing is you can learn to sail a boat on your own from a young age. Children as young as eight years-old can learn to sail in Optimist dinghies – and many elderly folk in their 90s still go sail today.

WHERE CAN I LEARN TO SAIL IN THE UK?

You don’t have to live near the sea to learn how to sail. There are plenty of centres across the country on inland lakes and rivers, as well as coastal schools.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national governing body for sailing in the UK – it’s qualifications are widely recognised across the world, so if you learn to sail in the UK, you can take your certificates with you pretty much anywhere.

Despite the name, the RYA doesn’t just teach people to sail yachts – you can learn to sail single-handed dinghies as well, which is a really good way to get a proper understanding of how the wind works before you move into larger boats.

We would recommend joining onto a beginners course or taking a couple of private lessons before taking a boat out by yourself. Most centres will require you to have at least an RYA Dinghy Level 2 before they let you hire a boat.

The RYA has a great list of registered schools for learning to sail. All you need to do is work out which course you want to do (if you are an adult, RYA Level 1 is a good place to start) then the website will help you search for your nearest training centre by typing in your postcode. It’s as simple as that. Most beginner RYA sailing courses run for four days. For example, this beginner sailing course at at Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre in west London costs £230.

Beginner Sailing Courses In London: Where Can I Learn To Sail?

You will be working towards gaining your RYA Level 1 and 2 dinghy qualification, which means have the basic skills to sail steer a single-handed dinghy in all wind direction and safely cast off/moor up.

From there, you can work towards your RYA Level 3 and then Seamanship skills. A great way to continue practicing your new-found skills is by racing. Ask your local club when they run friendly regattas, often anyone can join in.

WHAT SAILING GEAR DO I NEED?

When learning to sail, the number one piece of equipment I would recommend buying is a pair of neoprene shoes. You’ll wear these – rain or shine – in a dinghy. You can buy a pair from as cheap as £5 from M and M . It’s better to get a pair of longer ankle-high boots if you plan on sailing in winter.

What you wear really depends on the weather and time of year. If it’s a super hot sunny day in the middle of August and you are learning to sail on a small inland lake, then you can get away with wearing normal shorts and t-shirt.

However, water in the UK is notoriously cold even in the summer months, so it is best to be prepared. On windy days when there’s a high chance of falling in the water, it’s a good idea to wear a wetsuit and cagoule.

If you are learning to sail on a course, they will often provide these for you but best checking when you book. When you start to sail more regularly, it’s a good idea to buy a wetsuit – these can be as cheap as £50.

During the winter months, you need to layer up even more. Sailing gloves are advisable, as well as a warm hat. In freezing temperatures, sailors often opt for drysuits – waterproof suits that you can wear over warm clothes. Even when you fall in the water, you will remain bone-dry.

However, these are expensive to purchase and most centres won’t rent them out, so maybe something to consider buying further down the line if you decide to sail frequently in the winter.

It’s worth noting that clothing for dinghy sailing and yachting, while similar has some significant differences. Bear in mind that when you sail a dinghy you are far more likely to get wet than on a 30 foot yacht.

Buoyancy aids or life vests are an essential piece of equipment to wear when you go sailing. When you book onto an RYA course, the centre will provide these so you don’t need to buy your own.

WHERE CAN I GO ON A SAILING HOLIDAY?

Great Britain is one of the windiest places in Europe, so there are some great places to go on a boating holiday in the UK. The south coast of England is a popular place to sail – stretching from Southampton and the Isle of Wight all the way down to south Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Chuck Liddell is finally addressing what led to him going overboard on a Lamborghini yacht last month ... telling TMZ Sports it was a simple whoopsie-daisy moment.

The Iceman turned into Aquaman during a recent trip to San Diego ... falling off the side of the luxurious watercraft in front of all his peers -- requiring some serious assistance to get out of the water.

Liddell chalked the fall up to his animated hand gestures while talking ... and once he lost his balance, he only had two options -- hit the deck or aim for the H20.

Of course, Liddell chose the latter ... and in his opinion, that was the best way to avoid getting hurt.

The former UFC superstar says he's a pro when it comes to boats ... and he's pretty adventurous at sea, even doing flips off top decks of much bigger vessels in the past.

As for how he's doing, Liddell says he's completely fine ... so everyone can relax.

In fact, he tells us he's heading to Miami ... and chances are he'll be back on the water again.
