Is it O'Day, O'day, or Oday, or something else? My boat has a little plaque that says O'day.. the apostrophe is a penant.

December 29, 2012

With some time available to read during the holidays, I've been reading Across Islands and Oceans at http://atomvoyages.com/books.html . I also read some today about the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. I noticed some towns on Lake Erie that I had not heard of before. This has incented me to make the following list of sailing goals for 2012: - Learn to heave to. - Sail on Lake Erie. - Stay overnight on the boat. - Practice MOB manuvers. - Sail to Amherstburg, ON, CA (this is a long shot for sure). I really need to find my wind vane. I don't know how I lost it. This is very frustrating. I also need to fix my VHF antenna (missing the set screw).

April 20, 2013

I just put the last week of June on my calendar for crusing the Erie canal. I've got to do it this year! I've been thinking of doing this for a couple of years. The latest issue of Sail magazine has an article about cruising the Erie. I've got to to do it. Connie says she is willing.

July 28, 2019.

I received this e-mail from Chris: Hi Mark Thought I'd let you know I'm putting Testimony up for sale this weekend. We bought an 86 Catalina 22 in May in the Findley Lake NY area. I've been working on it since I brought it home, it wasn't in bad shape, but after owning Testimony I wanted to get it as close to her condition as I could. I really hate to let her go, love that boat, but we've spent a lot of weekends camping on her and decided we needed a bigger cabin. Just thought I'd let you know. I have a couple people from the sailing club we're in that are interested. I get lots of complements on how nice she is and I give you the credit and have them check out your web-site My Oday 192.

For some reason, the bolt holes in the mast step and the mast are too tight, from then factory. The real problem is that when the mast moves, everything moves. I mean the step. So after a while water gets in. I re-drilled the bolt holes in the step and mast. I noticed it after I installed roller furling. Some folks use only the back pin. So if you're bending the mast with the back stay, I'd look at that. Nice boat, nice job.

Brian S said: That mount is not the stock one typically sold with a 192. The stock mount included an angled fiberglass pad between the mount and the transom, to accommodate the angle caused by the curved transom, and by the reverse counter of the transom. From the little bit I can see of it in your picture, it looks as if the wood motor mount pad has been shaped to accomplish some of this angle correction. Just for fun, here's a pic I found when I was mocking up the name for my boat. It shows the original aluminum Garelick 2 stroke mount and block. I've seen other guys here make a new spacer block for a wider 4 stroke style mount. View attachment 167317 Click to expand
GSBNY said: That setup makes more sense but if this isn’t the original motor mount from O’Day then I have 0 clue how they could have installed it. The nuts and backing plates are inside the hull but until I put the inspection port in, there was literally no way they could have been put in without the deck off the boat. I did try to wiggle myself down from the quarter berth but got stuck about half way there and I’m not a big person. Does your boat have any access to the mount from the inside? Click to expand

I may be going after the cockpit drain hose next. It looks in tact but I don’t want to risk it over a hose that’s a few dollars. I was hoping there was a better way to get to it but it seems like the way you said is the only option.

Hey, I just came across this thread. Your boat looks great, GSBNY. I just got an '82 19 in October and have been dealing with water in the bilge like you describe. We actually just launched out of Tanner Park last week, and, after motoring a mile to the deeper area, we had a great sail up to the Fire Island light and back. We are away for a month now, but before we left, we took a stab at sealing up some points, including the cockpit drain hose, since the boat will sit in the driveway for a month, we figured it was a perfect time to let the 5200 take it's time curing. Took off the hose and discovered a break in the accordion folds on the underside. Then removed the through hull fitting to seal it, and found crumbled sealant and a crack along the threads. Replaced with a brass fitting and new hose, sealed with 5200 and we'll see what happens when we get back. Also sealed the rudder mounts the same way. The one down side we've had with this boat is the water in the bilge, which then leaks into the cabin. Anyway, maybe we'll see you out there.

Worded that wrong, the vang will be attached to the base of the mast like yours. I’m not sure if I want to install a bail like yours has or if I’m going to attach it with a spectra loop. I wish I had the Dwyer mast since I know the parts well and have access to them. Figuring out the Z Spar setup has been a bit tricky piecing it back together but I’ve been able to get more info from the Hunter owners who also have Z Spar rigs. So does anyone know which masthead light was used on the Z Spar mast? Working on that next.

Brian S said: Personally, I'm not keen on masthead 360º anchor lights on small boats. Where many small boats anchor, closer in to shore, I think they have to deal with smaller fishing type boats, who might not be looking up for masthead lights. Admittedly, I don't anchor out in areas with a lot of traffic, but I'm more inclined to hoist one of these lights about 1/3 of the way up the mast with the main halyard, with a light line to the backstay to prevent it whacking the mast. Also because I have installed a cigarette lighter socket near my electrical panel. https://store.marinebeam.com/utility-led-anchor-light-w-dusk-to-dawn-photocell-fx-ml-01/ Click to expand

1986 O'Day 192

  • Description

Seller's Description

1986 O’Day 192 (19ft) with 2.2HP Mercury Outboard with internal tank (no fuel tank mess on deck). It also includes a 17 ft L’il Rider trailer that is about as old as the boat. Sails are original expect for the replacement hank jib. A roller furling system is included (would need to convert the hank to accept the rolling furler). There is a large colorful spinnaker as well. Brand new windows installed in 2018. I am only the second owner. Boat was professionally bottom painted at the beginning of 2019 as this boat was a fresh water boat all its life. Currently the boat is stored at the marina where I rent my slip in the summer in Forked River (Silver Cloud Harbor Marina). The boat is very responsive and sails quite well. It has a swing keel and a kick up rudder….which are both wonderful features on this boat, especially in Barnegat Bay. I never worry about the bottom. The boat is simply too small for our family of 5. We are moving up to a 30’ footer as we plan to use it somewhat like a shore home. This boat is particularly spacious for a 19 footer. It has cushions in the bow and two very long quarter berths which are in excellent shape. Has Lewmar winches that are working well. It is very well designed as anyone who is familiar with the O’Day 192 knows. This boat is ready to sail. This boat is in very nice condition as when I bought it, I wanted to sail, not work. This boat is “turnkey” so you can get on the water tomorrow….wooden rails need a little love and attention and it needs to have the wiring looked at…I don’t use the lights so I never bothered to repair it. I do have a new 5 HP Honda longshaft outboard that I used with the boat (20 hours), that engine is also available should you have any interest, I’m asking $1,000 for that…otherwise, the Mercury is included in the sale of the boat. I have the title for the boat in hand, the registration and origin paper for the trailer. This was my first boat and I enjoyed it tremendously as it was easy to handle…even when I was single-handed. Great boat for experienced or novice sailors. Cash Only.

Equipment: 2.2 HP Mercury L’il Rider Trailer Spinnaker Lewmar winches

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  1. O'DAY 192

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
