1981 O'Day MARINER This is the proven hull of the Rhodes 19, designed by the famous naval architech Phil Rhodes. The Mariner version was re-designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and has a self bailing cockpit with a mini cabin that sleeps 4 in a pinch and has a sink and a place for a porta pottie. It has a jumbo cockpit. This boat has a stainless steel mast stepping system that most likely no other Mariner has. This makes it easier to step the 25 foot mast. She is a tall fractional rig.  Knot-a-Clue is self righting, with a heavy cast iron ballast centerboard and internal lead ballast fiberglassed in to the bilge, at the builder. You do not baby this boat, you can sail it hard in heavy weather and be perfectly safe. The best part, is you can pick a different place to sail every time you go out and it is beach-able!

The spacious arrangement features a “disappearing” section of the forward bulkhead which opens up the boat’s interior to the bow for a bright, airy feeling. The modern interior is teak with holly sole and Formica counter tops. There is abundant shelving and ample storage spaces. The drop-leaf table seats up to 6, folding to allow a double berth in the main cabin. A very popular O'Day Daysailer II 17 feet in very good conditions. All standing rigging (both shrouds and forestay) has been upgraded to the stronger 1/8" wire 1x19 - 316SS. Mast step (which isn't reliable in the original setting) has been rebuilt as well to withstand a stronger wind. Brand-new stronger halyards installed. Sails are in excellent conditions, not the slightest damage of the cloth. This boat has internal buoyancy chambers and she won't sink even if a cockpit is full of water (not recommended). She also has a self-bailing cockpit which works well. Will take an outboard up to 4 hp (that's what I used, at least).Comes with a nice trailer, may be rigged and launched in 15 min. Stuart Marine Corp. is located on Penobscot Bay in coastal Rockland, Maine.

We opened the business in 1982 to manufacture the classic O'day Rhodes 19 and Mariner one-design sailboats; and have grown during three decades into a premier builder of power and sail boats under twenty-five feet in length.

We handcraft each boat from start to finish in our clean and efficient boat building facility.

All our Stuart boats are constructed with traditional hand laminated fiberglass composites, unsinkable foam flotation, double-hull construction, and proven name brand material suppliers.

Rhodes 19 is a 19 ′ 1 ″ / 5.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by O'Day Corp. and Stuart Marine starting in 1958.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The RHODES 19 has it’s origins with HURRICANE class (1945) which was a molded plywood centerboarder with an open cockpit built by Allied Aviation Corp. Another builder, Palmer Scott, purchased a number of unfinished HURRICANE hulls, added a foredeck with cuddy cabin, and a fixed keel. This boat was sold as the SMYRNA. It was from the SMYRNA that Marscot Plastics made a plug for a fiberglass version. This was the boat that was later sold by O’Day Corp. as the RHODES 19. There are keel and centerboard versions. The fixed keel version become the standard for class racing.
