Redbrook Boat Club History
Back at the turn of the century, Redbrook stream found it's way to Lake Erie much the same way as it does today. Redbrook stream drains much of the groundwater and run-off from area around North Bend Road, Gerald Road, and Wade Avenue west of the city of Ashtabula, with three small streams meet at the Ashtabula Country Club. Redbrook stream has provided water and drainage for countless farm fields and orchards as it travels to the lake since this area was settled before paved roads, cars, and boats. The earliest use of the area we affectionately call "the Boat Club" was that of a picnic area that was rented to picnickers by the owner who lived in the old Gregory farmhouse on Highland Lane across from the present Boat Club. There are old newspaper accounts of one such outing from the late 1800's. Historical photos dating back to 1907 taken at he mouth of Redbrook stream show boats being launched. There were no improvements at the stream entrance at that time and the hardy old boaters simply pulled their boats up a ladder like roller frames to a point where where they would safe from storms. Herb Dodge, the Club's first commodore, remember his family built and used three boats one summer because storms swept away the first two. The Ashtabula Yacht club acquired about six acres at the entrance to Redbrook stream in the early 1920's and began to improve the stream entrance at Lake Erie . By 1924, the pier walls were installed which are still in use today. Ashtabula Yacht Club continued making boating improvements and soon needed a larger facility. In 1946, Ashtabula Yacht Club was relocating to the Ashtabula Harbor next to the old Car Ferry Dock and the Redbrook location continued on as their 'small boat division'. In 1952 the founders of the present club purchased the property from Ashtabula Yacht Club. By 1985 RBC had acquired another seven acres of adjacent land which allowed to make major improvements that are currently enjoyed. Bulkhead redesign was begun and completed in 1994 with out any debt. In the fall of 1996 Club members approved the construction of a new 4300 sq. ft. clubhouse overlooking Lake Erie . This was a major step in providing first class club facilities for members and their families. The new Clubhouse was completed in late 1997 and opened May of 1998. The above picture is from a Vintage Post Card stamped July 9, 1959 . Â It was mailed on July 9th 1956 from Geneva-On-The-Lake and is postmarked with a 3 cent Liberty Stamp. Â On the back of the card it says: " Red Brook Small Boat Harbor Ashtabula , Ohio ". Â The card was printed by C.L. Carle Wholesale Co., Distributor, Ashtabula, Ohio

Ashtabula City Port Authority Board of Directors
Mark Brockway, Chairman Ron Kister, Vice Chair Mary Church, Secretary
Board Members:
Joseph Varckette Joseph Craine Gunar Luhta Brian Wells
The Board meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Pre-Council Chambers in the City’s municipal building, first floor. Meetings begin at 8:00 a.m. and are
open to the public.
The City of Ashtabula was founded in 1796 by Moses Cleaveland, and Ashtabula Harbor has the distinction of being the first port on the Great Lakes to be officially surveyed. As the area became settled, private citizens raised the money needed for the first improvements to the Ashtabula Harbor and its river channel.
By 1830, Ashtabula’s port was a hub of activity for many of the Great Lakes communities and, at one time, the port was considered to be the third largest receiving port in the world. The construction of the Pittsburgh, Youngstown and Ashtabula Railroad in 1873 helped to further the increase of ore and coal trade at the Ashtabula Harbor. In the 1960s the Ashtabula Harbor was the third largest iron ore port in the world.
Today, the City of Ashtabula can be easily accessed by highways, rail and water.
Interstate 90 (I-90) runs east/west and is located approximately 5 miles from the Ashtabula Harbor. The Interstate provides Ashtabula with regional access to major markets east and west of the City, such as Chicago and Buffalo. State Route 11 is a four-lane highway that runs north/south terminating at State Route 531. The Ashtabula City Industrial Park is located just to the east of where Route 11 terminates at the north. Route 11 extends south, providing additional access to major markets in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Rail service in Ashtabula is provided by Norfolk Southern and CSX.
Lake boats and large vessels have access to docks via Kinder Morgan, R.W. Sidley and Norfolk Southern. Commodities handled through the Port of Ashtabula include coal (exported), iron ore, sand, gravel, stone and limestone (imported). The other eight Lake Erie ports handle similar type commodities including steel, grain, fertilizers and chemicals.
