  • 15 May 2023

gulet sailing ventures

Suppose you're looking for a truly unique & luxurious way to explore the beautiful coastlines and crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. In that case, consider embarking on a gulet cruise . But what exactly is a gulet? In this guide, we'll explore the history and evolution of this unique type of maritime vessel and what you can expect when you book a gulet cruise for your next vacation.

yacht charter

Introduction: What is a Gulet? A gulet is a traditional wooden sailing vessel that originated in Turkey and has been used for centuries by fishermen and traders in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, gulets have been transformed into luxurious motorized yachts that offer passengers a unique way to explore the stunning coastline and islands of Greece, Turkey, and Croatia.

The History and Evolution of Gulets The history of Gulets can be traced back to the ancient Phoenicians, who were the first seafarers to develop wooden sailing vessels. Over time, the design of these vessels evolved and spread throughout the Mediterranean, eventually leading to the creation of the Gulet. Originally used as fishing boats and cargo vessels, Gulets were typically powered by oars and sails and had a distinctive pointed bow and stern.

In the early 20th century, Gulets were gradually replaced by more modern vessels. Still, their popularity was reignited in the 1970s when a group of adventurous tourists began chartering them for leisure cruises. Since then, Gulets have transformed, with many being converted into luxurious motorized yachts that offer passengers all the amenities of a five-star hotel.

What to Expect on a Gulet Cruise

A Gulet cruise offers a unique maritime experience that combines the beauty of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas with the comfort and luxury of a private yacht. Depending on the size of the vessel and your chosen itinerary, your Gulet cruise may include stops at secluded coves and beaches, visits to charming coastal towns and villages, and opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, and other water sports.

One of the critical features of a Gulet cruise is the crew's personalized service and attention to detail. Most Gulets have a team of 3-5 people, including a captain, chef, and steward(ess), who ensure your trip is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The crew will prepare all meals onboard, using fresh local ingredients and catering to dietary restrictions or preferences.

Types of Gulets

Gulets come in various sizes and styles, ranging from small, intimate vessels designed for couples or small groups to larger, more luxurious yachts that accommodate up to 20 passengers. Some Gulets are built for speed and performance, while others prioritize comfort and luxury. When choosing a Gulet, you must consider your budget, group size and desired itinerary, and the luxury and amenities you're looking for.

Benefits of a Gulet Cruise

There are many reasons to choose a Gulet cruise for your next vacation. Here are just a few of the benefits of this unique maritime experience:

Unforgettable views: A Gulet cruise offers stunning views of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, as well as the beautiful coastal landscapes and islands of Greece, Turkey, and Croatia.

Personalized service: With a small crew and a limited number of passengers, a Gulet cruise provides customized service and attention to detail that is hard to find on larger cruise ships.

Privacy and seclusion: Unlike larger cruise ships, which can be crowded and noisy, a Gulet cruise offers privacy and seclusion, with the opportunity to visit secluded coves and beaches inaccessible to larger vessels.

Relaxation and tranquility: A Gulet cruise is the perfect way to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with plenty of opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Cultural immersion: With stops at charming coastal towns and villages, a Gulet cruise offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine of the Eastern Mediterranean.

How much does it cost to book a gulet cruise?

The cost of a Gulet cruise varies depending on the size of the vessel/yacht, the duration of the trip/rental, and the level of luxury and amenities provided. Prices typically range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars.

How long does a typical Gulet cruise last? Most Gulet cruises last between 7 and 10 days, although shorter and longer trips are also available.

A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

gulet sailing ventures

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

Read on to discover why.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:

  • Butterfly Valley

Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:

  • Rhodes (for Greek islands)

The sunken ruins at Kevoka from a gulet

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

  • Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
  • Itineraries tend to be fixed
  • It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
  • Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

Kaş and Kalekoy from the water

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

  • You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
  • Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
  • Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

  • The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
  • Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
  • Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
  • Check the ages of other passengers when booking

Olympos beach

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

Ultimate guide to a gulet sailing experience

gulet-sailing-experience

Gulets are classic handmade wooden yachts very unique to Turkey and are mainly built in Bodrum and Marmaris on the southwestern coast of the country. They are traditionally two-masted or three-masted vessels about 20 to 30 metres long.

Gulets

What can I expect from a gulet sailing experience?

A gulet sailing experience is nothing short of idyllic. The Mediterranean coastline in Turkey is beautiful with numerous islands dotted off-shore just waiting to be explored.

Each gulet cruise will have multiple breaks in different scenic bays, small fishing villages, with lots of stops for swimming and snorkelling. You can also bathe in hot springs, see some ancient temples and churches, and enjoy great Turkish and Greek food on the islands.

Gulet

Will we sail all day?

At night we find a beautiful bay or seaside village to moor up in, with other gulets as your neighbours. In good weather conditions, you sail around three to four hours per day. The captain may sail a bit longer to make up time if the weather didn't permit more sailing the day before.

seaside village

What can I do on board the gulet?

During your time on board and sailing you do little bits of nothing and truly have a holiday. Swimming, tanning and laying around on the deck relaxing, together with hearty meals are the things to look forward to.

The crew also keep basic snorkelling equipment on board for anyone wishing to spot some sea life during one of the many stops.

Inside the Gulet

What facilities can I expect on board the gulet?

Although the gulets can look similar from the exterior, internally some are extremely luxurious whilst others are more basic.

Traditionally Gulets were purely sail-powered, but these days also have diesel engines to help them along if the wind is still.

All gulets feature comfortable below deck cabins, the vast majority with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, basin, shower), a spacious indoor common area also known as the saloon, and a large deck that is decorated with cushions.

Gulets have between two and ten cabins, depending on the size of the vessel.

The gulets we like to use most have set departure dates that anyone can join and have six en-suite cabins, carrying up to 12 people in total.

Gulet

When is the best time to go on a gulet sailing experience?

The peak season for gulet sailing is from July to August, with the shoulder seasons of June and September also popular and a little cheaper. On some routes, the boats operate into May and October.

Our shared boat itineraries from Marmaris to Fethiye are four days, from Bodrum to Gokova and back to Bodrum eight days, and our tours from Marmaris to Fethiye and back to Marmaris are also eight days long.

Some of these tours take in several Greek islands along the way. All of these start and endpoints are easily accessible by domestic flights from Istanbul and many low-cost airlines also fly directly into Bodrum and Dalaman (which serves both Fethiye, around 45 minutes away and Marmaris, which is just under a two-hour drive).

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport and the start/finish of your gulet cruise on request.

Lunch on the Gulet

How big is the crew on a gulet?

Your crew is made up of a captain, a chef and three to four helpers depending on the size of the vessel.

Gulet crew

What meals can I expect on a gulet sailing experience?

You are served three main meals per day as well as a tea time refreshment. All meals are served on deck.

Breakfasts are typical Turkish spreads such as olives, cheeses, fruits, bread, pickles and yoghurts.

Lunches are light yet hearty and include items such as pasta, salads, rice and stews.

Dinners are feasts in the form of barbeques whether meat, chicken or fish, served with salads and sides. On the gulets, we enjoy the meals around one large table and everyone on board eats together, which is an essential part of Turkish life.

After dinner, the guests turn in for the night. Despite having their own private cabin, many people prefer to sleep on the deck as the summer nights are warm and tranquil and its a great pleasure to sleep under the stars while hearing the soft sounds of the waves lapping ashore or against the boat.

Overall, gulet cruises are one of Turkey's tourism highlights and one of the country's great holiday experiences. They can be enjoyed on their own as a short holiday, or easily added onto a longer stay in the country, perhaps as an extension onto one of our other Turkey tours.

The ultimate guide to exploring Santorini

Do you want to explore the sun-kissed Greek island of Santorini? This travel guide will provide you with all the information you need to know.

What is Gulet and How to Charter One

Gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel meant for comfortable cruising. The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian word "guletta" or the French word "goullette". This schooner type of vessel is used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of the 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of the 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.

Although charter gulets do sail when the winds allow, they are most of the time propelled by engine power . They are configured as motorsailers, with diesel engines to provide primary power, while sails offer additional strength.

Gulets have a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, the main foremast and a secondary mast aft. Their broad beam provides plenty of deck space and spacious cabins below decks.

Gulet Charter

Gulet Charter Types and Services

Gulets come in many sizes , ranging from small 15-meter-long craft to luxurious 33-meter air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury imaginable. Charter gulets offer hotel-like accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and enough storage for all your luggage. Charter gulets also have plenty of communal space - a large salon with a bar, lots of deck space for sunbathing and other activities, as well as an outside dining and lounge area at the stern. Gulet's stern deck is broad with a wide cushioned bench perfect for lounging , and a large table for games, drinks and meals. The salon is spacious and high enough for somewhat taller guests, with enough table space to seat all travellers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Charter gulets have an experienced and professional crew that comprises a captain, sailors, and a chef. Their job is to take care of your safety and provide you with comfort during your cruise, while the chef will prepare you fresh meals with high-quality local ingredients.

There are two gulet charter types - a private gulet charter and a cabin charter.

A private gulet charter offers you ultimate comfort and privacy , as well as high flexibility regarding the menu, itinerary, and provisioning. A charter gulet's crew is wholly dedicated to you and your party.

A cabin charter is a more economical and more convenient alternative to chartering the entire boat since you do not have to have company to charter a cabin . This is a pleasurable way of vacationing that allows you to meet different people . However, you do not have complete freedom since the itineraries and ports of embarkation and disembarkation are fixed and cannot be altered.

B&B Gulet is ideal to charter for you and your partner. If you think the whole sailboat would be too big for you but you still want to enjoy that unique feeling only sailing can bring, opt for Bed & Breakfast Gulet . You get a bedroom and breakfast. Hence the name. We can promise that on a gulet, it's never boring. You will meet new people and it is always dynamic. That's the list of B&B Gulets.

Gulet Sunbathing Area

The all-inclusive gulet charter is a whole different story. You will also be provided with a bed but the difference between a B&B Gulet charter and an All Inclusive is that an All Inclusive gulet charter gives you the full package for the biggest enjoyment. You wouldn't have to worry about a thing. All meals are being prepared for you and the same goes for the drinks too. Of course, one always can choose their package which can be tailored to your specific taste . For example, you can drink only soft drinks without alcoholic beverages, or you can decide to skip dinner and eat in a restaurant. The choice is yours to make and with an all-inclusive gulet charter, you have many of them.

Gulet Charter Holidays

By chartering a gulet , you get a different kind of sailing holiday. It is a very comfortable and carefree cruise on a boat that offers quality accommodation, as well as privacy and the best service possible . Another benefit of a charter gulet is the possibility to make the itinerary according to your wishes.

Gulet Food Friends Eating

Gulet charters vary in size, boat quality, service, and equipment. The higher the price, the more you get for your money. Charter gulets usually have three to eight cabins providing accommodation for up to sixteen guests. A typical gulet charter agreement includes the gulet , crew , insurance , and fuel for 4-5 hours of sailing per day without port taxes and fees. Half board is in many cases included in the price.

Typical Day on a Gulet Charter

A typical day on a gulet ship is not as different from a day on board a sailboat . Except there is less sailing done. The first day on board a gulet looks like this.

Upon the arrival of the gulet, you are assisted into your cabin. Once you settle, there will be a welcome meeting held on deck. This meeting will also include the briefing regarding the route, as well as the security briefing about life on board.

The cruise starts right after the meeting, or the following day, depending on the weather conditions and guests’ arrival times. The usual duration of cruising is 3 to 4 hours per day . Charter gulets usually visit a bay or two every day. The best part of the day is spent sunbathing , swimming in some lovely bay, using the boat's fishing equipment, water-skiing, snorkelling or something else, depending on what the gulet is equipped with. You can also spend time reading or playing games. If you moor in a port, you can spend the day sightseeing and exploring the shore around the port. Dining is normally outdoors, on the aft deck, in a port or anchored in some secluded bay, depending on the guests’ wishes.

Evenings are spent moored in a port or anchored outside the harbour, depending on the availability of places in the port and the preferences of the guests. Guests can also spend the evening outside the charter gulet, exploring the port town, having dinner in a restaurant or enjoying the local nightlife.

Sailing With Gulets – Is It A Myth? How to pick the right one?

Is sailing with gulets really a myth? Well, almost but not really. Sailing with gulets is possible but finding sailing gulet is so limited in number and rare enough that you could compare it with some mythological creature. However, In this post, I’ll explain sailing details with gulets, what to expect and what will your experience be like, at which price does sailing on gulets come and uncover some things you might not like.

1. Sailing with gulets is possible but the number of gulets is limited

Gulets are different than sailing boats.

They are quite large and much heavier so naturally, they need more wind power.

The reality is that some of the gulets can sail very well while others can’t sail at all.

You might be wondering, why is that so?

Well, gulets are primarily crewed motor sailing yachts and they usually travel on a motor.

However, some of the gulets have sails included and with good sailing capabilities.

Maske

Now for things, you might not like to hear, but you have to know them.

If you are big sailing enthusiast you have to face the facts that a lot of gulets don’t have the good sailing equipment.

Also, you must know that they usually have a Capitan that is not a sailing expert at all.

So now you understand why this is the main and very important reason why you should inform your agent in your inquiry about your wishes for sailing, not once but twice!

Let us know about your wishes so we can put together a perfect gulet and experienced crew with you can have amazing sailing experience!

2. If the weather is not on your side, you won’t sail!

So let’s say you did everything right way, you informed your agent an about your sailing wishes, we provided you with gulet and experienced crew… But then bad weather comes and ruins the plan. Let me explain… If you come to sail to let’s say Turkey , Greece or any destination that you’ve picked, for seven days but it happens that there is no wind… Unfortunately, you won’t be able to sail. We are of course very sorry if that happens, everything is possible but we or you can’t change the weather. Fact is gulets are quite big boats and they need much stronger wind than let’s say, 40 feet sailing yachts. So fingers crossed wind will be on our side!

Send inquiry and tell us more about your wishes and expectations.

3. if you’ll sail a lot don’t expect miracles from your crew.

Like it’s been said in the begging, Capitan is usually not a sailing expert and you need to inform your agent about your sailing wishes if you want us to provide you with a great experienced crew. Once you get your crew, please give them some break on your sailing holiday. Why is that so, you might wonder…

Well if you decide to sail a lot on your holiday, your entire crew will be focused and occupied with sailing so you can’t expect that after that they will run around serving you champagne and snacks. They will be very invested in keeping you happy while sailing, but they are people too that need a break. Once you stop at some bay, and they get to catch some rest and be energized again 100%.

Also, you should feel free to help them during a sailing procedure, it’s fun and interesting experience for you and you are helping your crew.

Crew

4. Let us know what experience you want to have!

Communicating your sailing wishes is very important, and communicating them IN TIME is crucial!

You have to let us know if you want to do super heavy sailing or you are much more interested in nice easy going sailing experience couple of times per week.

If you want to sail a lot and you are more into the heavy sailing it is possible! We can organize this experience for you but it will come at a higher price. So before planning anything, just decide how important sailing is for you on a simple scale from 1 to 10 is.

After you did that, consider how big your budget is and how flexible you are, then we can proceed with planning perfect options for you for an amazing sailing experience!

Prices and budget Since we already stated that sailing is possible but sailing gulets are very limited. Finding the best option for you come at a bit higher price. Once we make the best offers personalized for you, Then we proceed with finding a perfect gulet that can sail and a crew that could accompany you on this adventure .
  • If you wish to sail with gulets, let us know on time!
  • Sailing is possible but sailing gulets are very limited!
  • Weather conditions have to be good – sailing gulets need good wind power!
  • The experienced crew will be with you – but from time to time consider giving them a break
  • Sailing is overall an amazing experience!

A Guide to Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

I am incredibly grateful for countless travel memories that I can look back on with fondness but one of my favourite is gulet cruising in Turkey. It was a four night, five-day sailing holiday along the Mediterranean coast from Fethiye to Olympus. Choosing to partly detox from an Internet addiction, and relax at the same time, the experience was ten times better than any spa retreat offers.

However, speaking to friends after the event, it seemed that the biggest misconception people have about gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, is that you’ll spend all day, every day on the boat being bored, but it is about much more than that. Firstly, if you are a novice to gulet cruising, it helps to understand the unique background, concept and what makes them different from others sailing vessels.

Gulet sailing

What is a Gulet in Turkey?

When you book gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, you are venturing into an age-old nautical tradition. Gulets are traditional, handcrafted wooden boats with two or three masts. Although other countries such as Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia, use gulets, Turkey has an esteemed and long-established reputation for making gulet boats, especially in Bodrum and Bozburun, two coastal hubs on the west and southwest coast.

Their original use was for sponge diving and fishing, but over the years, the concept has evolved to become overnight floating hotels. Esteemed professionals expertly handcraft each gulet boat with unique design and décor. You can find more information about gulet boats here .

eating on a gulet boat

Are Gulets Seaworthy?

Yes, these boats are extremely hardy, and every year during winter, the owners dock into the shipyards for maintenance and upkeep. Gulets are a specialised vessel, and different from a yacht. The latest materials and techniques are used in yacht construction. Hence the industry is always evolving because the primary purpose is sailing long distances, even around the world. Whereas short, coastal cruising is what gulet boats are designed for.

Gulet Cruising in Turkey

What are Blue Cruises in a Gulet Boat?

Gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, which make up the Turkish Riviera. Within this long stretch of coastline, captains follow defined Blue Cruise routes, with unique attractions and things to do. The Fethiye to Olympus way is one of the most popular, but passengers can also sail to the Greek Islands and back, as another alternative.

Budget travellers can book cabin charter on set Blue Cruise routes of which there are many, or large groups and families can book their private gulet sailing holiday and along with the captain, tailor-make a particular blue cruise route. Are you wandering if blue cruises are appropriate for you or not? Here is what a gulet expert says: https://www.guletexpert.com/what-is-blue-cruise/

Inside a gulet boat

What is it Like Staying on a Gulet Boat?

Most gulet boats range in size from 20 to 30 meters, and each has between 5 to 8 cabins. Within these cabins are double or single beds, an en-suite bathroom and sometimes wardrobes. Most gulets have air conditioning, although the humidity is less at sea than at land, so they are generally not needed, especially when sailing.

Eat your meals on deck, and there is a full crew to help you including the captain, deckhands, and cook. Gulet boats can cruise with wind force or turn on the engine for a faster experience. As with any travel concept, a gulet can be budget and basic or luxurious, in which case, the cabins are larger with exquisite furniture and décor. The sunbathing area is at the front of the boat and inside is a separate seating/bar area.

Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

Places in Turkey to Book Gulet Sailing Holidays

Life on the Turkish Riviera focuses on seaside living, but some places have esteemed reputations for their excellence in the gulet sailing industry. Daily many gulet boats sail out of the harbours in these regions to take passengers on a 3 to 8-day cruise. They include….

Bodrum: The town, a favoured holiday destination for British people as well as Turks, has spearheaded Turkey’s tourism drive ever since the 1980s. As well as selling budget holidays, it also offers luxurious experiences leading it to become a favourite destination for rich and wealthy celebrities.

Marmaris: Another destination particularly favoured by the Brits, the harbour and marina area is a hive of everything nautical. Within the town itself, there is not much to do the area, however, is exceptionally scenic, explaining why it is a major sailing hub.

Fethiye: Round the world backpackers completing a tour of Turkey, book up for budget cabin charter Blue cruise routes to Olympus from Fethiye, although the town also offers luxury sailing at a higher cost.

Things to Do on Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

Fethiye Turkey

As mentioned before, although the term “sailing holidays” imply, it is all about being at sea, gulet cruising is about a lot more than that, namely the diversity of things to do.

1: Explore the small coastal towns

The Turkish Riviera has many small, coastal towns, each with their characteristics. Gulets dock in either overnight or for the day, giving you time to wander and explore. Kas on the Mediterranean coast is a perfect example because despite embracing modern living, it has kept its authentic atmosphere, making it one of the quaintest places in Turkey.

2: Get to places only accessible by boat

Many uninhabited islands surround Turkey, and some of them such as Gemiler just outside Fethiye are worth exploring. Ruined Christian churches and a fantastic view make it a preferred place at night for boats to drop anchor. Kekova sunken ruins is another area ideally explored by boat for the best view.

3: Sleep on deck

During my blue cruise, I never slept in my cabin. Instead preferring the deck at the front of the boat, I thoroughly enjoyed going to sleep under the stars. There is something peaceful about just listening to the sounds of nature as you drop off and as much as my cabin was comfortable and quiet, I choose to sleep on deck every time.

4: See Caretta Caretta turtles

It is a guaranteed certainty you will see the endangered Caretta turtles if you cruise the Mediterranean coast but in particular, the Simena area. One morning, a small group came swimming around the boat for food and seeing their size, I realised their stamina was strong despite their docile appearance.

5: Gorgeous sunsets

Watching a Turkish sunset dip over the horizon is a favourite evening activity of mine because I am not talking about average sunsets here. The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, boast of vibrant orange sunsets that are big attractions for tourists, who cannot resist getting their camera out to snap the view.

Gulet Blue Cruises

6: Catch your dinner

Of course, if you do not like fish or seafood, the cook will whip up many alternative dishes, but for fish lovers, part of the thrill is catching your dinner and BBQing it. From sea to plate within 20 minutes. You cannot get any fresher than that!

7: Snorkelling and diving

Most gulet boats have snorkelling equipment on board, which you are welcome to use when they stop for swimming breaks. Alternatively, Turkey is a scuba diving paradise with many underwater wrecks and various sea life. If you spend half a day in any scuba diving town, your boat captain can pre-book lessons for you, whether you are a novice or experienced.

8: Ice-cream deliveries!

In many spots around the coastline where boats dock in for swimming or overnight breaks, floating ice-cream boats offer the perfect refreshment. Pulling alongside the gulet and coming on board with many choices, it is a quirky concept of waiter service.

9: Jet-skis and parasailing

Likewise, anywhere boats gather, jet skis are for hire and passengers can parasail behind a speed boat. Jet skiing attracts adrenaline junkies while paragliding is an alternative bird’s eye view of the gorgeous landscape.

10: Visit historical ruins of ancient civilizations

Many Blue Cruise routes on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, stop by coastal historical ruins of which Turkey has hundreds. The Med coast was home to the Lycians, who left behind glorious cities such as Patara and Olympus, set in an overgrown forest. Their ancient cities have also sparked an official trekking route, one of the longest in the world taking as much as three months to complete.

11: See the Greek Dodecanese Islands

Although, the most popular routes of gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Turkish Riviera, mix your holiday with Greek destinations of which, the Dodecanese islands are perfect. 150 of them sit in the south Aegean Sea, just a short distance from Turkey. The two most famous are Kos, and Rhodes, however smaller islands like Simi, are ideal for getting off the beaten track.

Further Reading: If the history of gulet cruising interests you, read about the Fisherman of Halicarnassus , Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli. As well as unintentionally, setting in place the trend for coastal cruising, he made Bodrum, a famous destination of the Turkish Riviera.

As our founder is originally from Maryland, this will complement our current presence in the area, along with our MD sales team, which currently operates out of Bay Bridge Marina. The acquisition of the marina will allow us to expand on sales, service, and custom-built Nor-Tech Performance Boat sales in the region. Georgetown Yacht Haven has 300 slips, two paint sheds that can hold up to a 110-foot yacht, a 110-ton travel lift, a fuel dock, a swimming pool, bathhouses, and a complete ship store, along with many other amenities. GYH controls the largest travel lift in Northern Chesapeake Bay.

73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

What To Expect

Brim with contrasts, Moscow is one of Eastern Europe's most intriguing capitals. With more billionaires per capita than any other city, Russia's capital is host to everything from ostentatious palaces and onion-domed churches to austere reminders of its Soviet-run history, all wrapped in multiple layers of rich imperial and political history. Add world-class museums, edgy contemporary arts, lush green parks and a wealth of other attractions, and Moscow is made for discovering on a City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus tour.Simply hop on your comfortable, open-top, double-decker City Sightseeing bus and soak up the sights, from the cobbled space of Red Square - the stage of massive military parades in Soviet times and home to the colorful domes of St Basil's Cathedral - to the Big Stone Bridge, overlooked by the monumental Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Have your camera ready as you pass other stellar attractions, or hop off to stroll around Alexander Garden or visit the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum, home to stunning collections of European art, including masterpieces by Botticelli and Rembrandt.Armed with your 2-day ticket, feel free to stay on the bus for the full loop (60 minutes) and listen to the entertaining audio commentary, or hop on and off at any of the nine stops around the city as you please.
